Item Tier and Rarity: Common (Tier 1)
Specific Gear Slot: Waist Slot
Lore:
- Across the communal steadings and shared hearth-circles of the island continent of Orom, early greeters and foster-mothers sought ways to melt the wariness of weary refugees and suspicious traveling bands.
- Shimenawa 274 was woven not to repel monsters with cutting wards, but to mark a sacred perimeter of warmth, kinship, and tender disarming.
- Attuned weavers treated golden barley straw and supple cotton fiber with aromatic honeysuckle nectar and sweet almond resin to evoke feelings of childhood sanctuary and unconditional hospitality.
- The vellum pendants were inscribed by shrine elder-nurses using soft cinnabar washes, depicting emblems of shelter, open cups, and joined palms to subtly nudge foreign hearts into trusting camaraderie.
- In the modern courts and rough border caravanserais of Saṃsāra, junior negotiators, foster-diplomats, and sanctuary keepers wear this sash to disarm suspicious sentries, foster genuine fondness, and calm agitated crowds without violence.
Physical Description:
- A thick, supple two-ply cord plaited from golden barley straw and unbleached cotton bast, treated with a warm honey-amber bio-resin that gives off a faint golden luster.
- The cincture is joined at the front by a smooth, rounded toggle of glazed peach-toned earthenware shaped like an open blossom, cradling a polished rose quartz viewport that reveals a gently pulsing pale-gold crystal cell.
- Four accordion-folded vellum tags hang in pairs along the hips, hand-painted in cinnabar and warm ochre with figures of cupped hands, smiling hearth-fires, and resting doves.
- Twin terminal tassels hang from the blossom clasp, bound with soft coral-dyed silk threads and releasing a faint, comforting scent of baked honey-bread, warm milk, and sweet blossoms.
Item Detailed Stats:
- Item Health Points: Maximum avatar hit points plus 10 (calculated from 10 resilience multiplied by Tier 1).
- Attuned Armor Check (AC): +1 AC bonus added to the avatar’s worn Armor Check.
- Physical Weight: 2 pounds mundane weight (becomes 0 pounds if stored inside personal extradimensional containers).
- Attunement Time: 1 minute of uninterrupted focus (requires a 10-minute ritual if recovering from deactivation caused by a targeted item attack).
- Attunement Limit: Occupies 1 attuned gear slot of the 10 allowable attuned items openly worn by a Tier 1 avatar.
- Degradation Threshold: Operates at full capability until reduced to 5 or fewer Hit Points; at 5 HP or below, the peach-earthenware toggle micro-fractures, disabling all active abilities until repaired by a weaver or artisan.
- Destruction Remnants: If reduced to 0 Hit Points, the item unravels, leaving behind 1 Tier 1 magic crystal cell and 2 pounds of inert straw-cotton fiber.
Passive Magic Properties:
- Aura of Innocence: The wearer radiates an aura of unthreatening warmth and candor; the avatar gains a +1 bonus to all Charisma (Persuasion) checks made to earn trust, make introductions, or improve an indifferent creature’s attitude toward friendly.
- Kinship Resonance: Domestic pets, guard beasts, and non-hostile animals instinctively view the avatar as gentle; the avatar gains advantage on Wisdom (Animal Handling) checks made to befriend, calm, or feed domestic fauna.
- Hearthkeeper’s Grace: The soothing aroma stabilizes emotional tensions; the avatar gains a +1 bonus to saving throws against effects that inflict the Frightened condition or sudden hostility.
Activable Magic Properties:
- Cordon of the Welcoming Hearth: As an action, the avatar taps the peach-blossom toggle, spending 1 charge to project a 5-foot-radius golden glow around themselves for 10 minutes; creatures entering or conversing inside the boundary must make a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or become disinclined to violence, suffering disadvantage on hostile Insight or Deception checks directed at the avatar. (The item holds 3 charges and recovers 1 expended charge upon finishing a long rest; rolling a 1 on a d20 when expending the last charge cracks the ceramic toggle, suppressing all activable abilities until repaired).
- Hearth Tender’s Touch: As an action, the avatar gently touches an agitated, grieving, or nervous humanoid or beast; the target gains 1 temporary hit point and an immediate sense of relief, removing the Shaken or Frightened status for 10 minutes.
- Disarming Smile: As a reaction when an intelligent creature makes an aggressive verbal challenge, an initial intimidation attempt, or draws a weapon against the avatar within 10 feet, the avatar flares the vellum slips to release a warm ripple of honeyed light; the target must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or hesitate, lowering their weapon and pausing their aggressive posture until the end of their turn.

Commerce and Acquisition of the Guileless Hearth
- Wayfarer Sanctuaries and Communal Hearth-Houses: Set within refugee hostels, pilgrimage resting-halls, and communal hospices across the island continents, these sunlit havens are kept by elder matrons, municipal caretakers, and sanctuary greeters. The rooms carry the lingering fragrance of chamomile tea, clean linens, and toasted wheat. When an avatar enters looking to acquire the Shimenawa 274 of the Guileless Hearth, the housekeeper inspects the traveler’s demeanour and conduct to ensure the cord will not be abused for deceitful trickery. The baseline asking price is 14 to 17 gold pieces. Avatars who possess an unblemished reputation for community service or foster care receive a customary hearth-discount of 10% (reducing a 15 gold piece price to 13 gold and 5 silver pieces). When selling the sash to a sanctuary, the caretaker checks the warmth of the peach-toned blossom toggle and the condition of the vellum slips, offering 7 to 8 gold pieces in coin or equivalent value in clean lodging, travel rations, and restorative tisanes.
- Caravanserai Outposts and Border Market Bazaars: Located at dusty oasis intersections, mountain toll gates, and desert trade hubs where tense merchant trains converge, these bustling trading pavilions are operated by seasoned caravan masters and cross-cultural factors. Amidst crates of dried dates, brass lanterns, and woven saddles, the sash is treated as an indispensable diplomatic buffer. Factors sell the cord to junior caravan envoys and nervous couriers for 16 to 21 gold pieces, frequently accepting bartered goods such as raw honey, fine carded wool, or dried herbs. When purchasing a used sash from an adventurer, the factor tests the resonance of the pale-gold crystal to confirm the disarming pulse remains potent, offering 8 to 10 gold pieces in physical silver and copper currency.
- Shrine Commissaries and Vestment Repositories: Found within the outer courtyards of domestic deities, ancestral shrine cloisters, and river temples, these tranquil alcoves are attended by shrine attendants and junior vestment-knitters. Surrounded by hanging bundles of drying barley straw and clay incense burners, the attendants weave and consecrate the cords as protective garments of fellowship. Pious avatars can purchase a consecrated sash for a fixed offering of 15 to 19 gold pieces. If an avatar returns an unwanted cord to the shrine, the attendants perform a purification ritual over the barley fibers to verify it has not been stained by bloodshed or betrayal; if pure, they offer 6 to 8 gold pieces in temple scrip or coin, or offer equal value in blessed protective talismans.
- Shadow Quarter Brokered Salons and Smuggler Dens: Operating behind luxurious tea houses, masked private clubs, and clandestine gambling houses in grand trade metropolises, these discreet brokers cater to illicit fixers, undercover spies, and con artists. These operators prize the sash not for holy sanctuary, but as a subtle tool to bypass royal guards, disarm nervous sentries, and charm suspicious inquisitors without triggering detection wards. In these discreet backrooms, the cord commands a steep black-market premium of 24 to 30 gold pieces. If an avatar sells the item here, the broker asks no questions regarding its origin and pays 10 to 13 gold pieces in unminted bullion or untraceable foreign coin.
Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Applications of the Guileless Hearth
- High-Court Throne Rooms, Formal Audiences, and Diplomatic Pavilions (Defensive Utility): Inside marble chambers where a single misspoken word can trigger arrest or execution, the avatar relies on the belt’s calming presence to soften hostile scrutiny. As suspicious royal inquisitors or haughty nobles lean forward to deliver biting accusations, the avatar stands calmly, letting the sweet almond and baked-bread aroma subtly suffuse the dais. Using the Aura of Innocence, the avatar frames their defense not with haughty retorts, but with an earnest vulnerability that makes aggressive cross-examination appear unchivalrous and unprovoked. When an overzealous guard captain suddenly reaches for their sword hilt at the sign of a misunderstanding, the avatar triggers Disarming Smile, flashing the cinnabar vellum tags to arrest the captain’s blade mid-draw and creating space to clear up the confusion.
- High-Court Throne Rooms, Formal Audiences, and Diplomatic Pavilions (Offensive Utility): When navigating cutthroat political maneuvers to form an alliance or dislodge a corrupt vizier, open hostility often rallies the court around the target. Instead, the avatar steps to the center of the negotiations and casually activates the Cordon of the Welcoming Hearth, projecting a soft golden perimeter across the velvet rugs. Within this boundary, the target noble finds it difficult to maintain their deceitful facade or maintain a posture of cynical defiance. The avatar leans into this vulnerability, asking direct, tender questions that disarm the courtier’s rehearsed lies, compelling them to reveal hidden terms or concede vital trade concessions to preserve the room’s warm camaraderie.
- Crowded Border Caravanserais, Roadside Inns, and Frontier Taverns (Defensive Utility): In cramped, soot-stained common rooms filled with armed sellswords, heavy drink, and frayed tempers, a brawl can erupt over an overturned tankard. When a drunk mercenary slams a fist on the table and barks a lethal challenge, the avatar refrains from grabbing a weapon. Tapping the blossom toggle, the avatar relies on Hearthkeeper’s Grace to resist the sudden wave of hostility, deflecting the thug’s intimidation. If the brawler lunges, Disarming Smile forces an abrupt pause, allowing the avatar to gently place a fresh mug of ale before the stunned sellsword before steel is ever cleared.
- Crowded Border Caravanserais, Roadside Inns, and Frontier Taverns (Offensive Utility): When the party needs critical intelligence from tight-lipped locals, hostile smugglers, or paranoid deserters lingering at the bar, threats of violence will only cause patrons to draw daggers or flee into the night. The avatar unties the cord and drapes it naturally across the taproom bench, opening the Cordon of the Welcoming Hearth over the table. The avatar invites the reticent informant into the perimeter, applying Hearth Tender’s Touch to soothe their road-weariness and anxiety. Caught in the warmth of the hearth boundary, the informant lowers their guard, treating the party like trusted childhood friends and eagerly spilling guarded patrol routes or illicit passphrases.
- Tense Checkpoints, Fortified Gates, and Military Encampments (Defensive Utility): At frontier toll stations and garrison gates where wary sentries keep crossbows leveled and attack hounds straining at their leashes, approaching as an armed adventuring band often triggers an immediate alarm. The avatar moves to the vanguard, relying on Kinship Resonance to neutralize the danger. The snarling guard hounds catch the gentle scent of honey and warm milk, immediately dropping their aggressive stance, whining affectionately, and nudging the avatar’s knuckles. This disarming sight causes the suspicious archers on the parapet to hesitate and lower their bows, disinclined to shoot a traveler their own hounds welcome as family.
- Tense Checkpoints, Fortified Gates, and Military Encampments (Offensive Utility): To slip past a guarded perimeter without raising alarms or leaving a trail of bodies, the avatar walks directly into the lantern light of the barricade. Activating the Cordon of the Welcoming Hearth while engaging the sentry commander in polite conversation, the avatar casts a spell of communal ease over the guard post. The guards become reluctant to conduct invasive wagon searches or demand strict travel papers, viewing the request as an unnecessary rudeness to such a polite, gentle guest. The avatar waves their companions forward, guiding the party smoothly through the fortified gate while the charmed sentries wish them a safe journey.
- Wildwood Outskirts, Beast Lairs, and Deep Forest Trails (Defensive Utility): Traversing wilderness paths prowled by territorial predators, wild boars, or starving wolf packs, sudden confrontation is common. When an alpha predator emerges from the undergrowth with bared teeth, the avatar invokes Kinship Resonance and triggers Disarming Smile, arresting the beast’s pounce with a burst of warm, honeyed radiance. Stepping forward instead of retreating, the avatar uses Hearth Tender’s Touch to lay a hand upon the creature’s matted fur, removing its frantic panic and calming its hunting frenzy into docile stillness.
- Wildwood Outskirts, Beast Lairs, and Deep Forest Trails (Offensive Utility): When dealing with hostile forest dwellers, suspicious woodland tribes, or wild hermits guarding sacred groves, weapons will ensure a bloody ambush. The avatar lays the cord on the turf, establishing the Cordon of the Welcoming Hearth near the tree line and setting out small offerings of fresh bread and fruit. The golden boundary softens the territorial hostility of the forest guardians, drawing them out from concealment without arrows knocked. Through this projected kinship, the avatar turns potential enemies into helpful guides, securing safe passage through dangerous wilderness without shedding a drop of blood.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective (Five Senses):
- Sight: The peach-glazed earthenware blossom toggle radiates a warm, honey-amber light that spills across the twisted barley fibers. Through the clear rose quartz lens, the pale-gold crystal cell begins to thrum with a slow, soothing luminescence. The four accordion-folded vellum tags glow from within, illuminating the cinnabar icons of open palms, resting doves, and hearth-fires until they appear to flicker like embers on the stone. A soft, circular ring of amber radiance etches itself across the ground in a five-foot perimeter.
- Hearing: A gentle, comforting crackle fills the ears, reminiscent of dry birch logs catching in a winter hearth, beneath a faint, chiming harmonic tone like a brass bell struck inside a woolen cloth.
- Smell: A rich, inviting wave of freshly baked honey-bread, warm churned butter, toasted barley, and sweet almond blossom washes over the senses, masking stale air, dust, or rot.
- Touch: A soothing, radiant warmth blooms against the abdomen and spreads outward through the limbs, feeling like wrapping hands around a sun-warmed clay mug or stepping into a sheltered room after a cold rain.
- Taste: A rich, sweet warmth lingers on the tongue, tasting distinctly of wildflower honey, hot spiced cider, and sweet toasted grain.
- User’s Perspective (Extra-Sensory Perceptions):
- Kinship Resonance: The user’s consciousness feels a gentle, expanding web of empathy, intuitively sensing the underlying exhaustion, guardedness, or grief in nearby minds as brittle shells waiting to be softened rather than hostile threats to be fought.
- Sanctuary Stillness: The mind perceives the five-foot boundary as an island of domestic peace, feeling hostile mana frequencies and aggressive emotional spikes blunt and dissolve upon touching the golden edge.
- Observer’s Perspective (Five Senses):
- Sight: The observer sees the central ceramic blossom illuminate with a soft, lantern-like golden glow that outlines the user in a warm, unthreatening halo. A circular boundary of honey-colored light rests quietly on the floor, while the cinnabar tags cast a soft, rosy flicker over the surroundings. The user appears noticeably disarmed, approachable, and familiar.
- Hearing: A subtle, tranquil sound of quiet crackling embers and distant murmuring laughter drifts through the space, relaxing tense postures and softening raised voices.
- Smell: Observers are greeted by a deep, nostalgic scent of hot honey-cakes, baked oats, and flowering honeysuckle, cutting through lingering foul odors or road grime.
- Touch: Crossing the boundary feels like walking in front of a stoked stone fireplace; an immediate drop in nervous muscle tension occurs, relaxing clenched jaws and loosening white-knuckle grips on weapon hilts.
- Taste: A subtle hint of sweet malt and honey dust coats the back of the palate, prompting a reflexive swallow and a deep, involuntary exhalation.
- Observer’s Perspective (Extra-Sensory Perceptions):
- Aura of Fellowship: Observers, even those naturally suspicious or defensive, experience an instinctive impression that the wearer is an old childhood companion, trusted neighbor, or harmless guest, making cynical thoughts feel jarring and unprovoked.
- Dissipation of Dread: Fearful or demoralized allies sense their internal panic dampen, replaced by an anchoring certainty of safety and shared shelter within the circle.
- Positives:
- Instantly defuses rising tempers, violent escalations, and hostile social standoffs without requiring overt threats or damaging enchantment spells.
- Renders the wearer visibly harmless and deeply sympathetic, discouraging sentries, guards, and domestic animals from taking aggressive initial actions.
- Provides allies within the perimeter with a tangible source of emotional grounding, stripping away the Shaken condition and deadening sudden fear-based panic.
- Negatives:
- The warm golden halo and sweet, distinctive smell of baked honey and almond blossom make covert operations, shadows, and physical concealment impossible.
- The disarming aura affects the user and their companions as well, creating a sense of complacency that can lead a party to underestimate cold-blooded adversaries or unfeeling constructs.
- Mindless entities, undead, and unthinking magical constructs that lack emotional capacity or nervous systems are completely immune to the sash’s soothing presence and may be drawn directly to the radiant energy.
- Predatory beasts driven by pure, ravenous starvation may perceive the delicious aroma of roasted grain and honey as a food source, drawing them closer rather than driving them away.
Recipe: Weaving the Shimenawa of the Guileless Hearth
Materials Needed:
- Three yards of golden winter barley straw, harvested dry and free of blight.
- Three yards of raw, unbleached cotton bast fibers.
- Two ounces of warm honey-amber bio-resin (distilled honeysuckle nectar blended with sweet almond tree gum).
- Three ounces of dense terracotta earthenware clay.
- One vial of peach-tone ceramic slip glaze.
- One Tier 1 magic crystal cell (coin-cut, tuned to steady pale-gold harmonic frequencies).
- One small convex lens of polished rose quartz.
- Four rectangular slips of calfskin vellum, trimmed to two inches by seven inches.
- One vial of cinnabar mineral ink.
- One vial of warm yellow ochre pigment suspended in gum arabic.
- Two skeins of soft coral-dyed silk embroidery floss.
- One half-pint of warm chamomile-steeped spring water.
Tools Required:
- One wooden cordwaining braiding stand or weighted marudai rig.
- One bone creasing folder (for pressing sharp, durable accordion folds).
- One fine squirrel-hair lining quill or pointed lettering brush.
- One small charcoal annealing kiln or potter’s brazier.
- One pair of bronze fiber shears.
- One leather awl (for piercing eyelets in vellum).
- Two glazed earthenware mixing bowls and a glass stirring rod.
Skill Requirements:
- Weaving or Cordwaining: Level 1 or higher (required to blend the brittle barley straw with flexible cotton fibers into a durable, even two-ply cord without breaking the stalks).
- Pottery or Stoneware Craft: Level 1 or higher (required to shape, hollow, and vitrify the five-petaled peach-blossom clasp with an integrated lens mounting and rear cord loops).
- Calligraphy or Talisman Craft: Level 1 or higher (required to draft the cinnabar iconography of cupped hands, hearth-fires, and resting doves without breaking the line resonance).
Crafting Steps:
- Warm the honey-amber bio-resin in an earthenware bowl over soft embers until it liquefies into a fragrant, amber-gold syrup.
- Steep the dry barley straw briefly in warm chamomile water to make the stalks pliable, then immediately draw both the barley and raw cotton bast through the warm bio-resin bath to seal the fibers.
- Divide the treated fibers into two equal bundles and mount them onto the cordwaining stand.
- Braid the lengths into a thick, uniform two-ply rope measuring five and a half feet in length, keeping steady tension so the golden straw twists evenly around the supple cotton core.
- Mold the terracotta clay into a rounded, hollow toggle shaped like an open five-petaled blossom, piercing a circular viewport through the front and cutting two wide belt channels through the reverse.
- Apply the peach-tone slip glaze evenly across the clay blossom and fire the piece in the brazier kiln until vitrified into durable earthenware.
- Seat the polished rose quartz lens into the front circular opening, set the Tier 1 pale-gold crystal cell directly behind it in the interior hollow, and secure the cell in place with a drop of warm almond resin.
- Moisten the four vellum slips with chamomile water, pressing them flat between dry linen cloths until supple.
- Using the squirrel-hair brush, paint the sacred emblems of hospitality along the slips using alternating brushstrokes of cinnabar and yellow ochre: depict the open cupped hands, the resting doves, and the smiling hearth-flames along the centers.
- Allow the inks to dry fully, then fold each slip into four crisp accordion pleats using the bone folder.
- Rub a micro-thin glaze of clear honeysuckle gum over both faces of each folded vellum slip to protect the cinnabar work against sweat, humidity, and rain.
- Thread the braided barley-and-cotton cord through the back loops of the peach earthenware blossom, positioning the clasp at the exact center of the sash.
- Punch small eyelets in the top edge of each folded vellum slip using the leather awl, then tie two slips to the left of the blossom toggle and two to the right using coral-dyed silk threads.
- Divide the trailing ends of the cord into twin terminal tassels, wrapping their necks tightly with the coral-dyed silk floss and trimming the tassel skirts straight with the bronze shears.
- Lightly buff the finished cincture with a dry flannel cloth to warm the resin, releasing the faint fragrance of honey-bread and setting the golden crystal cell to pulse.
Small Warm Door and Grinding Men of Dry Ridge
Before the dividing of the four great waters upon the round crust of Orom, the sons of the earth had no butter for their grain, and they carried only bitter flint between their teeth. In that gray epoch, the heavens were like an iron pot turned upside down over the plains, and the clouds did not drop rain, but dropped sharp salt and cold gravel that tore the ears of the cattle. When two men met upon the dry ditch where the goats drank, neither would speak a human syllable; each would pick up a round river-stone and hide it in the fist of his tunic, watching the neck-vein of the other until the sun dropped behind the salt-hill.
There sat in the low pit of the Red-Willow ditch an old mother-woman whose marks upon the sun-dried brick were called Nana-Hesh-of-the-Porridge-Spoon. She had no oxen, and her husband had been kicked into the lime-quarry by an elk before the seasons were written down. Her house was not made of pine-trunks or carved limestone, for men would set fire to wood out of pure bile; she lived inside a hollow mound of dried bull-droppings and river-loam, where the door-hole was so small that a man must enter upon his belly like an eel in the mud. Inside this mound, Nana-Hesh kept a hearth-pot made of red ditch-clay, three bundles of yellow barley-straw that had never seen hail, and a jar of sweet amber grease boiled from the tears of the mountain-almond tree.
It came to pass in the eleventh cold turning that the Iron-Riders of the Redge-Table descended from the dry hills. These were not men who planted lentils or spoke to their calves; their breasts were tied up in dried rhinoceros-hide that smelled of dog-fat, and their spears were tipped with jagged green glass picked out of the sky-craters. Their chief was a man called Ghol-of-the-Seven-Scars, whose lower jaw was split like a butcher’s block so that his tongue hung out between his teeth like a red worm. Ghol and his thirty-and-two riders had burned the barley-cribs at the Ford of the Swine; they had thrown the children into the dry well and taken the copper kettles to beat into long butcher-knives.
When the dust of their shaggy ponies rose above the dried mustard-weeds, the diggers of the valley ran like blind beetles into the hollow rocks. But Nana-Hesh did not crawl into the crag; she was boiling crushed barley with dried sheep-curd in her round red pot, and her legs were stiff from the gray damp that lived in the ditch-clay.
She took her bone comb and straightened the dried yellow barley-straw upon her knees. She took raw cotton wool that her blind niece had picked from the thorn-bush before the frost, and she began to twist the fibers together two by two upon her shins, making a thick rope like the tail of a dray-horse. Into the twist she poured the warm oil of the sweet almond tree and three spoons of bee-spittle that had slept two winters in a hollow cedar-root. As her dry thumbs rolled the straw, she sang the song that the cow-mother sings to the calf whose leg is broken by the ditch-rock:
“The pot is warm, the door is low; The wolf has flint, the sheep has snow; Put down the tooth, wash off the gall, The soup of barley feeds us all.”
When the rope was six arm-lengths long, she reached into her skin pouch and pulled out an earthenware nodule which she had rolled between her palms from the peach-colored loam of the sweet-water spring. It was shaped like the wild five-leafed plum-flower that opens before the snow-melt. In the heart of the flower was a round eye of rosy mountain-crystal, through which one could see a little yellow fire-stone that she had taken from the belly of a dead lightning-tree on the high pass. She passed the yellow straw-rope through the ear of the peach-flower and tied it around her belly above her greasy wool apron.
From her basket of scrap-leather she took four slips of pale calfskin, thin like the wing of a dead bat. With a splinter of green reed dipped in red earth-paste and yellow ochre, she marked the skins with three true things: the two open palms that do not hold a stone, the little fire that has two sticks to feed it, and the white pigeon that sleeps upon the horn of the ox without fear. She folded these skins four times like a merchant’s measuring-rod and tied them to the cord with threads of coral sheep-wool.
Then the Iron-Riders came through the mustard-weeds. The hooves of their shaggy horses sounded like dry beans shaken in an ox-bladder. Ghol-of-the-Seven-Scars rode to the door-hole of the mud mound. His spear was wet with the brown blood of the sheep-shearers at the lower spring, and his left eye was white and blind from an old club-blow.
He looked down from his saddle and saw the old woman sitting upon her limestone stool before the hole. He raised his green-glass spear until the shadow of the point fell upon her throat.
“Old toad-skin,” Ghol barked, and his spit was black from chewing bitter soot-leaf, “where have the diggers hidden the copper kettles? Speak before the sun touches that weed, or I will peel your arms like roasted onions and hang your hide upon my horse’s neck!”
Nana-Hesh did not drop her wooden spoon. She did not reach for an iron bodkin. She reached down with her left thumb and pressed the rose-quartz eye inside the peach-clay flower at her navel.
The earth did not shake, nor did the sky crack with blue fire. But the four calfskin tags upon the barley-rope began to tremble like poplar leaves before a shower. A yellow light, soft like the lamp of a sick-room when the child is breathing easy, slid out from the peach-flower. It ran in a five-foot circle upon the dry sheep-dirt around her knees, smelling not of iron, nor of horse-grease, nor of spilled gall, but of parched grain toasted in fresh sheep-tallow, warm milk drawn from a red cow, and the sweet white blossoms that open when the frost breaks.
Ghol threw his spear forward with the weight of his shoulder.
The glass point touched the edge of the five-foot yellow circle. The glass did not break; it did not strike a wall of stone. But the hand of the chief went loose upon the ash-shaft, as if the sinews of his wrist had been dipped in warm river-water. His knuckles forgot how to hold the wood; the heavy spear slipped from his fingers and fell sideways into the dry dock-weeds, making no more sound than a dry branch falling upon moss.
The thirty-and-two riders behind him bared their yellow teeth and drew their iron scrapers, shouting the war-cry of the wolf-dogs. But their shaggy ponies would not jump. The horses smelled the toasted barley and the sweet almond grease that hung upon the cord. The lead horse lowered its shaggy nose, stretched out its gray lips, and nudged the peach-flower upon Nana-Hesh’s hip, blowing warm nostrils against her wool skirts and whinnying like a colt that has found its dam after the mountain storm.
The riders sat upon their high saddles, but their hearts grew soft and heavy like unbaked dough left in the rain. Ghol looked upon his own knuckles; he saw the scars where the dogs had torn him at the Seven-Wells, and he saw that his fingernails were full of dried red grease. He looked down upon the old woman, and his split jaw began to tremble. In his ears there was no longer the sound of the war-horns or the screaming of the burnt cribs; he heard only the little wooden spoon scraping the bottom of the red clay pot, and he remembered the dark tent of his mother, where the wind could not reach his skin when he was yet smaller than a newborn goat.
“Why do you hold the spear against the pot, my grandson?” Nana-Hesh whispered. Her voice was not like a judge in the market; it was like the creaking of an old wicker cradle in the corner of a room.
Ghol climbed down from his horse. His rhinoceros-hide apron was stiff with road-scum, but he did not pick up his glass spear. He fell upon his knees before the five-foot yellow circle, pressing his scarred face into the dry sheep-dirt until the red earth stuck to his wet tongue. The thirty-and-two riders dropped their scrapers into the dust one by one; they stepped down from their saddles and sat upon their heels with their arms hanging down between their knees, sniffing the smell of honey-bread and warm milk that came from the vellum tags.
Nana-Hesh lifted her wooden spoon from the red pot. She took no silver coin from their pouches; she demanded no oaths upon the sky-god’s navel. She dipped the spoon into the warm barley-gruel and held it to the scarred lips of the chief, feeding him like an orphan calf until the pot was scraped white.
When the sun went down behind the salt-hill, the Iron-Riders did not burn the Red-Willow ditch. They broke their glass spearheads against the anvil-stone and used the ash shafts to prop up the falling timbers of the sheep-pens. For three seasons they remained upon the flat land, digging the irrigation trenches with their hands and bringing the first wild plums from the mountain passes to lay before the low mud door.
When Nana-Hesh died of the old dry cough in her ninetieth winter, the people did not bury the barley-cord with her bones. They took the peach-flower toggle and the four folded vellum tags and gave them to the foster-maidens at the communal cradle-houses, so that when the angry men from the dry borders came down with their knuckles clenched upon stones, the daughters of the valley might go forth without shields, carrying only the small warm circle that reminds the wolf that he was once a cub in the dark.
This account was inscribed upon forty-eight tablets of dried river-clay recovered from the hearth-trenches of the Lower Steading, and beneath the last sign was pressed this judgment:
Moral of the Story: A shield may turn the point of a spear and a wall may break the rush of an ox, but only the unlatched door and the warm smell of the shared hearth can teach the hand that holds the knife to let it fall into the grass.

- Aura of Innocence: Scoundrels wearing the cincture gain +1 Effect on Consort and Sway actions when de-escalating tense negotiations, calming guard hounds, or introducing themselves to hostile contacts.
- Cordon of the Welcoming Hearth: Upon marking 1 Stress, the sash projects a 3-meter halo of soft honeyed light for the duration of an encounter. Anyone inside the circle must resist with Resolve to initiate violence or deceit; those who fail suffer reduced Effect and worse Position on all aggressive actions against the wearer.
- Hearth Tender’s Touch: When an ally within reach suffers Level 1 or Level 2 psychological harm (such as Panicked, Shaken, or Terrified), the wearer may clear that specific harm condition for the scene by spending an action to touch them and soothe their nerves.
- Disarming Smile: When confronted by an immediate violent threat or sudden ambush, the wearer can mark 1 Stress to make a Resistance roll using Resolve with +1d. On a success, the attacker hesitates and abandons their lethal attack, stepping back into a cautious neutral stance.
- Drawback: The sweet scent of warm honey-bread and the visible golden luminescence prevent the wearer from gaining Potency or improved Position on Prowl or Stealth actions.

- Cordon of the Welcoming Hearth (3 Charges): As an action, you expend 1 charge to project a 5-foot-radius emanation of warm golden light centered on yourself for 10 minutes. A humanoid creature that enters the emanation or ends its turn there must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or become disinclined to violence, having disadvantage on attack rolls and hostile Wisdom (Insight) checks directed at you and your companions while within the boundary. The sash regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20; on a 1, the ceramic flower toggle fractures, disabling all active properties until repaired.
- Hearth Tender’s Touch: As an action, you touch a willing, frightened, or demoralized creature within 5 feet. The target gains 1 temporary hit point and the Frightened condition is suppressed on them for 10 minutes.

The attacker must make a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature aborts the attack, wasting the action as its weapon is lowered in hesitation.
