Santeria 814 of the All Knowing Tablet

Lore

  • In the centuries following the first awakenings upon the world of Saṃsāra, reincarnated souls carrying memories of Earth and the syncretic traditions of Cuban Santería gathered within the coastal settlements of the Island Nation of Erlitou.
  • Among these spiritual lineages was the devotion to Orunmila, the orisha of destiny, supreme wisdom, and prophetic understanding who witnessed the creation of the cosmos and the weaving of every soul’s fate.
  • In their previous lives, Babalawos—high priests of wisdom—utilized a sacred circular divination tray known as the Opón Ifá, upon which consecrated wooden dust was marked with sacred signs to consult the wisdom of the ancestors and the supreme deities.
  • When these souls emerged into Saṃsāra’s high-magic reality, they recognized that the ambient weave of magic and the living elemental consciousness of Gaialilith responded directly to the sacred geometry of the ancient trays.
  • The craftsmen discovered that combining native dense tropical hardwoods with ground magic crystalline cells permitted an ordinary ritual board to tap directly into the collective metaphysical memory of the world.
  • The designation 814 represents the sacred sequential inscription cataloged by the divination carvers of Erlitou, who carefully balance each piece so that novice tier 1 avatars can safely channel fragments of primordial truth without burning out their newly awakened minds.
  • It is widely revered among wandering researchers, archive seekers, and temple initiates as an indispensable instrument for interpreting the hidden histories, planar alignments, and true natures of the realm.

Description

  • The item is a circular, plate-sized tray carved from a single dense disc of golden-grained ironwood native to the southern island archipelagoes, measuring approximately twelve inches in diameter and an inch in thickness.
  • The raised outer rim of the board is intricately chiseled with the watchful, wide-eyed countenance of the spirit of the crossways at the cardinal apex, while the remaining perimeter is lined with delicate geometric patterns of alternating sunbursts, curling ocean waves, and miniature crosses.
  • Set flush into the center of the wooden disc is an inlay of pale river stone that has been dusted with fine, luminescent powder ground from discarded magic crystal shards.
  • Tucked into a recessed groove along the bottom edge rests a six-inch divining stylus carved from the bleached ivory horn of a reef beast, capped with a silver wire wrap that secures a tiny Tier 1 magic crystal the size and weight of a coin.
  • Across the reverse face of the tablet, eighty-four fine runic grooves form an interconnected circular web, allowing thought energy to flow smoothly from the bearer’s fingers across the entire surface of the wood.
  • The entire piece smells richly of dried palm oil, burned copal incense, aged parchment, and sweet crushed cocoa butter, radiating a faint, pleasant warmth whenever it is laid flat upon a table or the bare earth.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
  • Item Classification: Worn or Carried Magical Gear (Must be held or placed on a level surface to activate its channeled arts)
  • Specific Gear Slot: Waist Slot (Suspended in a fitted side-holster of soft cured leather that hangs from an avatar’s belt, occupying one waist accessory space)
  • Armor Check (AC) Modifier: +0 (The tablet is a divinatory focus and grants no direct deflection or AC enhancement)
  • Item Resilience: 10
  • Item Health Points: Avatar maximum Health Points plus 10 (calculated as base avatar max HP plus resilience of 10 multiplied by item tier 1)
  • Structural Integrity: The tablet becomes broken and loses all magical functionality if reduced to half its total health points or below; it is destroyed into fractured hardwood fragments, bone dust, and loose crystal shavings if reduced to 0 health points.
  • Item Weight: 2 pounds (counts toward standard carried gear limits, but loses all physical weight if stowed inside an extradimensional container)
  • Attunement Requirement: Simple attunement (requires sixty seconds of uninterrupted meditation while holding the stylus to the center of the board; immediately unattunes if stored within an extradimensional pouch or chest)
  • Suggested Market Value: Varies widely according to regional wood availability and the concentration of spiritual practitioners; standard baseline recommendation is 20 silver to 30 silver coins in temple ports, rising to 4 gold coins in inland state capitals where ancient script decoders are in high demand.

Passive Magic

  • Whisper of the Ancient Witness:
    • While the tablet is worn openly at the hip and attuned, the avatar’s Mind’s Eye is granted subtle supplementary clarity when examining unknown texts, inscriptions, and symbols.
    • The user instinctively recognizes the linguistic family, historical era, and general intent of any written or carved language native to Saṃsāra, even if the user does not formally speak or read the dialect.
    • This clarity provides an intuitive +2 bonus on all skill checks rolled to decipher ancient carvings, municipal archival scrolls, or worn gravestone epitaphs.
  • Library Resonance:
    • When the avatar recalls any piece of historical, religious, or geographical information committed to their Mind’s Eye while wearing the tablet, the central powder on the board faintly glows with a pale gold sheen.
    • This glow provides the avatar with an undeniable physical nudge indicating whether any library, monastic scriptorium, or municipal hall of records within a five-mile radius holds additional volumes on that specific subject.
    • If such a repository is present, the avatar gains an advantage on research checks conducted within that facility.
  • Aura of Solemn Truth:
    • The sacred presence of the orisha’s gaze lingering upon the rim makes it uncomfortable for deceit to persist in the wearer’s immediate presence.
    • The avatar gains an instinctive gut sensation whenever a speaking creature within ten feet deliberately utters a falsehood regarding matters of history, law, or their ancestral lineage, causing the tiny crystal in the stylus to vibrate lightly against the hip.

Activable Magic

  • The Inscription of Odu (Divine Inquest):
    • Action Cost: One standard exploration or non-combat action (requires three minutes of quiet concentration).
    • Verbal / Casting Requirement: Normal somatic chant; the avatar must lay the tablet flat, spread the consecrated crystal dust across the stone surface using the palm, and recite an ancestral prayer of invocation under six seconds.
    • Effect: The avatar uses the ivory stylus to trace sacred directional signs into the powder while posing a single question regarding an obscure piece of lore, a forgotten historical event, or the function of an ancient artifact.
    • The dust rearranges itself into glowing calligraphic patterns, imparting direct, objective facts into the user’s mind as if reading from an illuminated chronicle.
    • This insight reveals historical origins, previous owners, materials used in construction, or the purpose of long-abandoned ruins, answering questions that mundane inquiry could not resolve.
    • Cooldown: Can be invoked up to twice per in-game day. If forced beyond this limit, the mental strain induces the Fatigued condition upon the avatar for one hour.
  • Scrying the Soul’s Thread:
    • Action Cost: One standard action.
    • Verbal / Casting Requirement: Ritual chant; requires ten continuous seconds of uninterrupted singing or chanting while touching the tip of the stylus to an object, relic, or piece of clothing belonging to another being.
    • Effect: The central stone reflects a momentary ultraviolet light map revealing the target’s true identity, species classification, and their general tier of power directly to the user’s Mind’s Eye.
    • If the subject has passed away, the tablet reveals the broad circumstances of their death, how many years have elapsed since their demise, and whether their soul returned to the sea of purgatory or lingers near the world.
    • Cooldown: Usable once per long rest. Avatars gain nothing from a short rest, requiring the full twenty-two-hour day cycle to pass before the crystal battery recharges its spiritual conduit.
  • Tracing the Ley Line Path:
    • Action Cost: One standard action.
    • Verbal / Casting Requirement: Silent casting; requires the user to place their thumb upon the carved face on the rim and point the stylus forward without speaking.
    • Effect: The tablet vibrates and emits a low hum that guides the bearer toward the nearest ambient magical anomaly, conduit, active hearthstone hearth, or permanent teleportation circle within a one-mile radius.
    • The stylus acts like a compass needle, tilting subtly in the user’s grasp to point in the exact direction of the magic source while outlining whether the aura is stable, chaotic, or tainted by wild magic.
    • Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.

Commerce and Acquisition of the All-Knowing Tablet in Saṃsāra

  • Monastic Scriptoriums and Archival Ateliers:
    • Physical Location and Structure: Scriptorium shops and scholarly ateliers are commonly found situated along the quiet courtyards of major universities, royal libraries, or ancestral temple plazas within prominent historic capitals like Erlitou, Mycenaean, or Banpo. Large commercial department stores do not exist on Saṃsāra; instead, these businesses are owned and maintained by lifelong clerical scribes, historical translators, and artisan woodworkers who change their worn slotted gear daily depending on whether they are binding parchment, carving hardwood discs, or infusing mineral dust. The storefronts feature towering rows of polished teak shelving lined with vellum rolls, stone rubbings, brass compasses, and sealed stone urns filled with powdered crystal catalysts.
    • Buying Procedure and Pricing: When purchasing Santeria 814 of the All-Knowing Tablet from an archival merchant, the transaction follows the setting’s prevailing sellers’ market standards where availability, craftsmanship, and local academic demand dictate price. The standard suggested baseline valuation of this tier 1 item is established at 25 silver coins (or 2 gold and 5 silver coins).
    • An unaffiliated traveler or independent adventurer without formal credentials must pay the full listed price of 25 silver coins.
    • If the buyer belongs to a recognized regional Scribes’ Guild, Scholars’ Faction, or Diviner’s Guild and wears their faction badge openly, they receive an institutional discount equal to 10% times their character’s tier level; a tier 1 member receives a 10% reduction (purchasing the tablet for 22 silver and 5 copper coins), while a tier 2 scholar receives a 20% discount (paying 20 silver coins).
    • Transactions in these licensed academic scriptoriums are handled through the World Bank system, where the purchase price is deducted from the character’s Mind’s Eye ledger, alongside the standard municipal 3% local sales tax assessed in city territories.
    • Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Avatars looking to sell the tablet to an archival scriptorium must present the piece alongside its ivory stylus, allowing the master archivist to run their Mind’s Eye over the wood to confirm structural integrity, inspect the runic conduits, and verify that the tablet is not broken or missing its Tier 1 battery crystal.
    • Scriptorium merchants haggle aggressively, typically offering an acquisition payout equal to roughly 10% of the item’s baseline value multiplied by the tier level of the character selling the item; a tier 1 seller receives approximately 2 silver and 5 copper coins (10% of 25 silver), whereas a tier 2 avatar secures 5 silver coins (20% of 25 silver).
    • The proceeds are wired straight into the seller’s World Bank balance, and the transaction is recorded in an official shop log along with the tablet’s serial inscription number 814 and the seller’s true name or description, leaving a clear paper trail for municipal tax assessors and judges.
  • Coastal Curio Pavilions and Seaport Antiquarians:
    • Physical Location and Structure: Located within the bustling open-air waterfront markets of island capitals, these wooden and canvas pavilions sit adjacent to the grand wharves, covered wagon trade routes, and naval administrative offices. Because these shops cater to arriving ship crews, oceanic navigators, and transient traders moving between island nations, they specialize in travel charts, compasses, divining dials, and foreign talismans harvested from distant archipelagos.
    • Buying Procedure and Pricing: Near the docks, imported hardwood items from nations across the eastern sea carry additional logistical overhead due to maritime sea-current routing (which doubles transit costs when traveling eastward against the natural flow). Consequently, the baseline market price is quoted at 30 silver coins.
    • Unregistered visitors and wandering adventurers face strict “buyer beware” scrutiny and may be quoted as high as 35 silver coins if the dealer senses the buyer urgently requires translation tools for an expedition.
    • Active members of the Navigators’ Guild or Maritime Traders’ Faction who visibly display their guild emblems receive the standard 10% discount per character tier, dropping a 30 silver asking price to 27 silver for a tier 1 member and 24 silver for a tier 2 member.
    • In addition to the purchase price, dockside transactions are subject to the local seaport crossing fee of 1 silver coin per individual, with all funds processed through the World Bank registry.
    • Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Seaport antiquarians operate with variable reserves of ready money and prefer acquiring items that have broad appeal to outbound seafaring captains.
    • An avatar liquidating the tablet to a port vendor calculates returns against the local baseline rate of 30 silver coins; a tier 1 avatar receives 3 silver coins (10%), while a tier 2 avatar receives 6 silver coins (20%) directly to their World Bank account.
    • If the antiquarian already has multiple divination tablets in stock, they may refuse an outright purchase, offering instead to trade for nautical supplies, sealed fluid-collector reagents, or repair resin.
  • Inland Guildhall Exchanges and Grand Central Arcane Registries:
    • Physical Location and Structure: Positioned within the high stone concourses of inland capital cities near the royal courts and the state-monitored permanent teleportation circles, these grand exchange halls are administered by military-appointed guild masters. Technomancers, royal chroniclers, and master enchanters patronize these vaults to acquire pristine, calibrated ritual gear suitable for merging recipes or high-level historical analysis.
    • Buying Procedure and Pricing: Landlocked central capitals must import foreign coastal ironwood across multiple state borders, accumulating the mandatory 5% inter-state transit tax and the 1% central hub passage levy. Because of these cumulative distribution costs, the tablet commands an elevated asking price of 45 to 50 silver coins (4.5 to 5 gold coins).
    • Certified members of the Royal Cartographers, Enchanters’ Guild, or Arcane Historians who display their faction credentials claim their standard discount (10% per tier level of the character), allowing a tier 1 member to buy the tablet for 40 silver and 5 copper coins, or a tier 2 member for 36 silver coins.
    • Purchases made through the grand registry come with an embossed royal tax certificate, ensuring that the item cannot be arbitrarily seized by road garrisons or municipal marshals during highway inspections.
    • Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Guild officials acquire verified divining tablets to support state research, archive maintenance, and civil defense mapping.
    • A character selling the tablet here negotiates against the inland baseline valuation of 45 silver coins; a tier 1 avatar is paid 4 silver and 5 copper coins, a tier 2 avatar earns 9 silver coins, and a tier 3 avatar gains 13 silver and 5 copper coins (30% of the baseline value).
    • Characters of advanced tier favor selling here because official guild funds clear instantly through the World Bank without scrutiny, and the item’s historical registry is updated cleanly.
  • Black-Market Vaults and Subterranean Fence Warrens:
    • Physical Location and Structure: Operating entirely outside municipal charters and avoiding the royal courts, these illicit syndicates operate within dark cavern cities, hidden cellars beneath industrial steam-works, or unmarked warehouses near forgotten canalways. Fences here trade in items salvaged from dead avatars in unsafe zones, unregistered archaeological treasures looted from wild-magic ruins, and contraband smuggled past state toll gates.
    • Buying Procedure and Pricing: Black-market merchants maintain total anonymity, logging zero records of transactions or client identities.
    • The price to buy this divination tablet in the shadows is set at the absolute peak of what the buyer can bear, universally priced between 40 and 60 silver coins (4 to 6 gold coins), with zero discounts permitted.
    • Faction badges and institutional guild credentials carry no weight in these underground warrens; attempting to claim a guild discount will cause the dealer to terminate negotiations or double the asking price.
    • All black-market acquisitions must be settled strictly in tangible, physical coin—favoring gold, electrum, or precious metal pieces—because black-market syndicates reject the tracked ledgers of the god of commerce’s World Bank to avoid legal audits.
    • Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Characters carrying a tablet obtained without official salvage licenses or stripped from contested gravesites utilize black-market fences to avoid criminal questioning by city judges.
    • A baseline fence will pay standard rates of 10% of the item’s base value per tier level of the seller directly in hand-to-hand metal coins.
    • However, if the fence or their associated criminal syndicate urgently requires an untraceable tool to decipher an ancient heist map, uncover a rival boss’s secret identity, or locate a concealed subterranean ley line conduit, they may pay up to twice the standard merchant rate—awarding 5 to 6 silver coins to a tier 1 seller or 10 to 12 silver coins to a tier 2 seller in untraceable physical gold and silver, leaving neither a record nor a tax assessment behind.

Tactical Roleplay of the All-Knowing Tablet Across the Environments of Saṃsāra

  • Overgrown Ancient Ruins and Tangled Wilderness:
    • Environmental Context: Dense jungle tracts and neglected backwoods across the 73 island nations conceal broken monuments, crumbling temples, and overgrown tombs left behind by pre-awakening eras. The wilderness is hostile, dominated by invasive, toxic plant life and aggressive feral beasts locked in continuous territorial competition.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • While moving through choked valleys where vines threaten to entangle the party, the avatar keeps the ironwood tablet resting in its waist holster, exposed to ensure the line-of-sight requirement remains intact.
      • Approaching a moss-covered archway inscribed with worn petroglyphs, the player touches the outer rim of the tablet to engage the passive Whisper of the Ancient Witness.
      • Roleplaying this ability involves the avatar pausing to lightly trace the ancient lettering, narrating how their Mind’s Eye filters out the weathering to perceive that the carvings represent a funerary banishment curse rather than an open public passage.
      • The avatar quietly signals the party to halt, explaining that the text warns of a pressure-triggered collapsing ceiling and pit traps ahead, steering the group away from a lethal defensive hazard before any step is taken.
      • When an ambush of pack predators stalks the perimeter, the avatar draws the ivory stylus and triggers Tracing the Ley Line Path without speaking, roleplaying the subtle tilt of the needle in their hand to guide the party toward a nearby natural mana spring, whose stable warding frequencies disorient the beasts and provide a fortified defensible position.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Upon cornering a dangerous beast in an ancient ruin courtyard, the avatar uses an exploration action to initiate The Inscription of Odu.
      • Kneeling on the flagstones, the player roleplays spreading the luminescent crystal dust across the stone center, speaking a rhythmic invocation to Orunmila under six seconds.
      • With the ivory stylus, the avatar traces sacred directional signs, asking the divine consciousness for the beast’s historical vulnerabilities.
      • The crystal dust arranges itself into glowing patterns, granting the avatar instant knowledge that the creature has calcified scar tissue over an old arrow wound on its left flank, allowing the avatar to shout precise tactical coordinates to frontline party members to bypass its heavy hide and strike for maximum effect.
  • Open-Ocean Expeditions and Shipboard Passages:
    • Environmental Context: Navigating the expansive oceans requires traversing dominant east-to-west sea currents, deceptive reef outcroppings, and sudden maritime magic storms. Ships routinely face boarding actions from aquatic civilizations, rogue corsairs, or territorial deep-sea creatures.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • During a night watch on the main deck under the dimming light of VaporSphere, the avatar monitors an approaching foreign caravel.
      • As the foreign vessel signals peaceful intentions, the avatar sits by the rail, unhooks the tablet, and invokes Scrying the Soul’s Thread by spending an action to touch the stylus to an abandoned piece of sailcloth previously retrieved from that vessel’s trade skiff.
      • Singing a low ten-second ritual chant, the player narrates the central stone pulsing with cold ultraviolet light, revealing through their Mind’s Eye that the ship’s commander is an unpossessed Tier 2 renegade known for deceptive coastal raiding, and that the vessel carries concealed ballistas below decks.
      • The avatar immediately warns the captain to bring weapons to bear, preventing the crew from being caught flat-footed by a false parley.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • When hunting an elusive pirate warship through a labyrinth of coastal islets, the avatar uses Tracing the Ley Line Path from the crow’s nest.
      • Pointing the ivory stylus over the water while pressing the carved face on the rim, the player roleplays watching the stylus tilt against the sea breeze, detecting the turbulent magical wake left behind by the enemy ship’s arcane steam engine within one mile.
      • By tracking the invisible residual mana current, the avatar guides the ship’s navigator through tight shallows, allowing the party’s vessel to intercept the foe from an advantageous windward angle and fire upon their exposed stern.
  • Subterranean Megacities and Dark Cavern Highways:
    • Environmental Context: Vast underground cavern networks connect cave metropolises, industrial dwarven workshops, and deep-earth trade tunnels. These biospheres are completely devoid of natural sunlight, illuminated only by bioluminescent fungi, glowing crystal veins, and the roaring furnaces of magical steam systems.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Navigating unfamiliar underground tunnels where acoustic reverberations distort navigation, the avatar relies on Library Resonance while scouting.
      • Recalling an old mining blueprint seen in an upper district archive, the avatar observes the crystal dust on the board glowing with a gentle amber light, confirming that an abandoned surveyor’s depot lies within a five-mile radius behind a sealed cave-in.
      • Guiding the wounded party to this precise location, the avatar avoids wandering blindly into hostile monster nests in the lower dark.
      • If a cavern ambusher leaps from a ceiling fissure, the avatar relies on the Aura of Solemn Truth: because the creature radiates aggressive intent, the stylus vibrates intensely against the avatar’s hip, granting a split-second physical warning that prevents the avatar from being surprised.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Encountering a massive vault door sealed with an ancient runic lock mechanism, the avatar spends three minutes performing The Inscription of Odu.
      • Tracing the sacred symbols into the glowing dust, the avatar inquires about the forgotten command phrase used by the original subterranean architects.
      • The dust aligns to spell the true command sequence, causing the heavy stone barrier to unlock without triggering the defensive poison vents built into the frame, leaving the enemy garrison within vulnerable to a sudden, coordinated assault.
  • Royal Palaces, Municipal Courts, and High-Diplomacy Chambers:
    • Environmental Context: Within the opulent stone administrative halls and royal courts of central capital cities, power is contested not with steel, but through legal intrigue, noble lineages, state trade negotiations, and hidden council manipulation.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Attending a formal court banquet where a foreign ambassador is presenting a military pact, the avatar stands near the delegation with the tablet resting openly at their waist.
      • The Aura of Solemn Truth operates passively: when the visiting diplomat swears that their monarch has stationed no naval forces near the island’s southern border, the stylus vibrates sharply against the avatar’s hip.
      • The avatar subtly informs the king’s advisor through roleplay, exposing the envoy’s lie and preventing the state from signing an agreement that would leave their southern ports undefended against naval siege.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • During a formal legal tribunal before the city mayor and appointed judges, the avatar seeks to prove that an accused noble is guilty of treason and conspiracy.
      • The avatar requests permission to consult the sacred tablet, stepping forward to perform Scrying the Soul’s Thread on a forged ledger found in the noble’s estate.
      • Chanting steadily for ten seconds, the avatar projects the ledger’s metaphysical history through their Mind’s Eye, declaring before the assembly the exact date the document was manufactured, the true identity of the crooked clerk who forged the seal, and the deceased smuggler whose funds were moved.
      • Faced with undeniable historical and spiritual truth verified through the sacred board, the judges accept the evidence, leaving the conspiring faction stripped of their political influence and facing a royal decree of banishment.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Sight:
      • The physical boundaries of immediate surroundings appear slightly muted as a soft, warm golden glow radiates outward from the pale stone inlay.
      • The fine crystal dust scattered across the board begins to swirl independently, tracing out luminous geometric runes and flowing script in glowing amber light.
      • The tiny Tier 1 crystal affixed to the head of the stylus flares with a steady violet spark, casting sharp, elongated shadows across the user’s fingers.
    • Sound:
      • An internal chorus of dry, overlapping whispers fills the ears, resembling the sound of thousands of turning parchment leaves in a quiet archive.
      • A low, rhythmic acoustic hum emanates from the wood, vibrating at the exact pitch of a resonant wooden drum struck in the distance.
    • Touch:
      • A comforting, radiant warmth spreads from the ironwood disc directly into the hands, resembling the heat of sun-baked river stones.
      • The ivory stylus pulses with a faint, steady heartbeat, vibrating gently against the fingers as it passes over the inscribed powder.
      • A tingling sensation of static electricity glides along the forearms and up to the temples as thought energy is drawn through the runic conduits.
    • Smell:
      • The nostrils are filled with a rich, dry aroma of toasted palm kernel oil, aged sheepskin vellum, and melted beeswax.
      • A gentle wisp of burning copal incense and raw, crushed cocoa butter drifts up from the surface, completely masking the scent of stale air or mud.
    • Taste:
      • A mild, pleasant flavor of roasted cornmeal, dry wood bark, and honey settles on the back of the palate.
      • A clean, chalky mineral dryness lines the tongue, evoking the sensation of inhaling fine library dust.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception:
      • Omniscient Lucidity: The user’s Mind’s Eye experiences a sensation of expanding consciousness, receiving historical facts, linguistic keys, and structural genealogies as complete, fully formed thoughts rather than sequential words.
      • Resonance of the Watcher: A profound feeling of an ancient, calm intelligence resting its gaze upon the back of the user’s mind manifests, banishing irrational panic and instilling absolute mental focus.
      • Ley Thread Detection: The avatar feels an undeniable magnetic pull toward unseen flows of ambient mana, perceiving nearby magical anomalies and conduits as glowing fibers running through the earth.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Sight:
      • The central inlay of the wooden tray emits a concentrated circular pool of amber illumination, casting a warm light upward across the user’s chest, face, and sleeves.
      • Fine, glowing golden particles rise an inch above the disc, shifting into shimmering geometric patterns that match the movement of the ivory stylus.
      • The carved face at the apex of the tray’s rim appears to shift subtly in the shadows, its carved eyes seeming to track movement within the room.
    • Sound:
      • Observers hear a faint, dry rustling sound similar to wind stirring through dried palm leaves or parchment scrolls.
      • The soft, steady scratching of the ivory stylus across stone resonates with an unnaturally clear, amplified click that carries across a quiet chamber.
    • Touch:
      • Anyone standing within a few feet detects a noticeable pocket of dry, pleasant heat radiating outward from the board, accompanied by the settling of ambient drafts.
    • Smell:
      • Nearby companions instantly catch the distinct fragrance of sweet temple resins, burning copal, and dry vellum rolls drifting into the room.
    • Taste:
      • Highly sensitive bystanders experience a faint, lingering dryness on the lips, accompanied by the subtle sweetness of corn honey.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception:
      • Individuals with an active Mind’s Eye perceive the user’s aura stabilizing into a bright, structured lattice of gold and ultraviolet light.
      • Reincarnated characters or entities attuned to the weave sense a heavy, authoritative presence in the room, making frivolous speech or deliberate deception feel awkward and unnatural.
  • Positives:
    • Absolute Historical Clarity:
      • Obscure scripts, ancient lineage claims, and hidden construction histories are translated directly into comprehensive facts, bypassing language barriers.
    • Objective Truth Verification:
      • The presence of deceit regarding historical or legal matters produces an unmistakable physical vibration, protecting the user from diplomatic manipulations.
    • Directional Conduit Guidance:
      • The board serves as a reliable compass toward stable mana sources, active hearthstones, and permanent teleportation circles across unknown terrain.
    • Research Optimization:
      • The item actively alerts the user to nearby archival repositories, providing an undeniable edge during municipal or ancient script research.
  • Negatives:
    • Visual and Acoustic Signatures:
      • The bright amber radiance of the powder and the rhythmic sound of the stylus make stealth impossible while consulting the tablet in dark environments.
    • Stationary Constraint:
      • Proper activation requires a stable, level surface or steady two-handed concentration, leaving the user stationary and unable to dodge rapid environmental threats.
    • Cognitive Exhaustion:
      • Forcing more than two daily inquests overtaxes the avatar’s thought channels, inducing the Fatigued condition and clouding subsequent skill checks.
    • Broadcast of Divinatory Flow:
      • The active flow of mana channeled through the crystal battery can be felt by sensitive scryers or high-tier foes in the vicinity, revealing that ancient secrets are actively being unearthed.

Crafting Recipe: Santeria Divination Board of the All-Knowing

  • Materials Needed:
    • 1 dense circular slab of seasoned golden ironwood (roughly twelve inches in diameter and one inch thick).
    • 1 disc of pale river stone (honed flat to fit flush as a central inlay).
    • 1 Tier 1 magic crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested from an adult beast or purchased from a reagent exchange).
    • 1 section of bleached ivory horn harvested from a coastal reef beast (roughly six inches long).
    • 1 ounce of powdered catalyst dust, prepared by finely grinding discarded magic crystal shards.
    • 1 spool of fine silver wire (used to secure the crystal battery and channel thought energy).
    • 1 dram of amber tree sap, drawn using a fluid collector to serve as an alchemical binding agent.
    • 3 drams of purified palm kernel oil and 1 small lump of raw copal resin (used as sacrificial reagents to condition the wood and open the ancestral line).
  • Tools Required:
    • 1 Fluid Collector (used to harvest, measure, and deposit the binding sap).
    • 1 Woodcarver’s gouge and chisel set (for roughing out the circular board, carving the raised rim, and chiseling the watcher’s face).
    • 1 Engraving burin (for carving the 84 runic channels on the reverse side and etching perimeter patterns).
    • 1 Stone lapidary rasp and polishing block (for leveling and fitting the central stone inlay).
    • 1 Small bronze mortar and pestle (for crushing the copal resin and crystal shavings).
    • 1 Small portable oil burner or brazier (for warming the oil and curing the binding sap).
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Woodworking / Woodcarving: Minimum skill rank of 5.
    • Alchemical Crafting: Minimum skill rank of 3.
    • Mind’s Eye Focusing / Scrying: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to trace the 84 conduits without breaking the flow of thought).
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Shaping the Ironwood Disc and Rim:
      • Cut and plane the golden ironwood into a circular tablet twelve inches wide and one inch thick.
      • Chisel out a shallow circular recess in the center of the board, leaving a raised border around the perimeter.
      • Using the woodcarver’s gouge, sculpt the wide-eyed countenance of the crossway watcher at the cardinal apex of the raised border.
      • Inscribe the alternating decorative patterns of sunbursts, ocean waves, and small crosses around the remaining raised rim.
      • Carve a narrow resting groove along the lower interior rim to hold the stylus when not in use.
    • Fitting the Inlay and Channelling the Reverse:
      • Shape the pale river stone with the lapidary rasp until it sits perfectly flush inside the central recess of the wooden disc.
      • Turn the tablet over and, using the engraving burin, etch eighty-four continuous, interconnected runic grooves in a circular web across the back surface.
      • Warm the dram of harvested tree sap over the brazier and use the fluid collector to apply it into the recess before pressing the river stone into place, creating a permanent bond.
    • Crafting the Divining Stylus:
      • Carve the six-inch reef beast horn into a smooth, tapered writing stylus with a fine, rounded tip.
      • Fashion a small socket at the blunt end of the horn to seat the Tier 1 magic crystal.
      • Set the Tier 1 crystal into the socket, applying two drops of warm tree sap around the base to anchor it firmly.
      • Wrap fine silver wire tightly around the junction in a cross-hatched pattern, leaving the top half of the crystal exposed to absorb ambient mana from the surrounding air.
    • Consecration and Powder Infusion:
      • Crush the copal resin in the mortar, blend it with the three drams of warm palm kernel oil, and rub the mixture thoroughly into the front and back of the ironwood disc until the grain darkens and shines.
      • Grind the discarded crystal shards into a fine, sparkling dust and spread it evenly across the surface of the pale river stone.
      • Place the assembled tablet on a level surface, hold the ivory stylus with its crystal touching the stone, and focus through the Mind’s Eye.
      • Chant an ancestral litany for five continuous minutes, directing personal thought energy through the silver wire into the crystal battery until the stone inlay emits a steady amber radiance and the dust aligns into its first faint geometric hum.

Round Wooden Pan of Great Ear and Scratching Bone of Many Forevers

In the early turning of the dirt, when the moon-mother had not yet ceased to spit stones of hot fire, there dwelt in the reed-huts a scraper of skins whose name upon the wet leaf was rendered as The One Who Asks The Pig Why It Has Four Knuckles. He had no copper kettle, nor did he possess seven daughters to weave the hair of the mountain goat into sleep-mats. He owned only a broken stool of willow wood and an appetite for knowing what lay behind the fence of tomorrow.

The grandfathers whose ears have grown long like dry squash relate that this skin-scraper sat upon the red sand of the dry ditch. He took a flat stone and rubbed it upon his elbow until his skin became thin as an onion coat. To him came no merchant, but an old wanderer whose belly made the sound of dry beans rattling in an earthen pot. This wanderer carried upon his shoulder an axe-cut disc of heavy yellow timber that was yellow like the fat of a boiled hog.

“O scraper of dead skins,” said the wanderer, speaking through a nose that had been bitten off by a spotted cat in the third valley of salt. “Why do you sit in the ditch and weep into the hairs of your knee? Have the soldiers of the seven hills taken your salt-basket, or has your cooking pot cracked across its belly?”

“I weep not for salt,” said the scraper, casting three small stones against the dry root of a thorn-bush. “I weep because the King of the High Gate has said that on the day of the dark star he will drive all who have no silver needles into the deep marsh where the biting worms dwell. I wish to know if the words of the king are like the water that falls into the mud or if they are like the stone that breaks the hip of the bull.”

The wanderer sat upon his heels, and his knees made a noise like the breaking of dry twigs under the foot of an elk. He laid the round timber upon the sand. At the head of the timber was carved the face of an old man whose two ears were large like dry palm fans, and between his teeth he held no tongue, but the shell of an ocean snail.

“The King of the High Gate is an eater of dried meal,” rasped the wanderer, whose breath smelled of wild garlic and the fat of burnt snakes. “His thoughts are like four chickens tied together by the feet; when one hops to the left, three fall upon their necks. But the dirt remembers what the king has forgotten. Take this round wooden platter which was dragged out of the black water before the first star was given a name by the sheep-keepers. Take also this sharp tooth of the sea-bull that has been wrapped in the thread of white silver.”

The wanderer reached into a bag made of a monkey’s skin and brought forth a handful of fine white meal. It was not the meal of pounded barley, nor was it the lime of burnt shells, but the dust of great stones that had been crushed by the hooves of the gods when they ran across the sky. He threw the white powder upon the round board, and the powder did not blow into the ditch with the wind, but lay still like oil upon milk.

“Draw the sign upon the dust,” said the wanderer. “Do not draw with the fingers of meat that have touched the fat of dead sheep. Take the tooth of the sea-bull. Direct the point of the bone to the middle stone, and look through the small knot behind your forehead where the blind grandmothers sit.”

The scraper took the ivory stylus that was cold like winter ice. He set the point into the dust of stones. Immediately, the small blue bead tied with the silver thread began to shine with the light of an oil lamp that has been carried into an underground cellar. A smell arose from the wood which was the odor of sweet dried fat, hot copal gum, and the yellow oil squeezed from the kernels of the tree that grows upon the high stones.

The scraper drew a line from the left ear of the wooden face down into the belly of the plate, and he drew another line across the throat of the disc. He did not speak with the lips of his mouth, for his tongue was glued to the roof of his jaw by the great dryness. Yet inside his breastbone there was a noise like the turning over of ten thousand dry parchment hides in a deep cave where no water falls.

He saw the King of the High Gate sitting upon a stool of ox-horn. He saw that beneath the king’s red mantle there was no sword of bronze, but only a great boil upon his thigh that was yellow like a melon. He saw the king’s three brothers mixing the juice of the bitter root into a cup of goat’s milk, whispering that when the dark star appeared they would pour the milk down the king’s throat and cast his body into the well where the tanners wash their hides.

“The king will drive no man into the marsh,” cried the scraper to the wanderer. “Before the star of the night can show its tooth, the king will be cold like a turnip that has been forgotten in the frost!”

The wanderer laughed with a sound like the grinding of corn between two river boulders. He arose and shook the dust from his buttocks. He took from his neck a gourd of sour beer, took one swallow, and threw the empty gourd into the brambles. “Keep the plate of yellow wood,” he said. “It has heard the first breath that came out of the mouth of the great mother. It will tell you where the seven jars of fat are buried, and it will tell you when the rain will wash away the mud huts of your uncles. But take heed that you do not wipe the dust with a wet apron, nor ask the board to tell the day when your own throat will cease to whistle.”

The wanderer walked into the scrub-oak toward the high ridges, and although the scraper ran after him to give him two skins of dried fish, there was no man upon the ridge, but only a grey fox that sat upon a stone and scratched its belly with its hind toe.

For thirty and seven summers the skin-scraper lived in that ditch, yet he scraped no more hides of the mountain sheep. The people of the five towns came to him upon their knees, bringing baskets of small round loaves, legs of salt pork, and flagons of sweet wine that had been buried in sand. A woman whose child had fallen into a deep fissure brought to him a copper bangle; the scraper placed the ivory tooth into the stone dust, and the dust parted to show the child sitting upon a dry shelf of chalk three fathoms down, holding in its lap a sleeping turtle. The young men who went out to hunt the horned hogs in the cane-brakes brought him fat hams; he traced the signs upon the board and said to them: “Go not past the split rock, for the great cat with the blue ears sits there with her four kittens, and her claws are long like the bodkins of a saddle-maker. Go rather by the dry wash where the red clay is soft, for there twenty fat hogs have eaten the sweet berries until their bellies drag upon the pebbles.”

And the young men went, and they slew nineteen hogs, and not one man received a scratch upon his greaves.

Yet because the third roll of the leaf-scroll was chewed by the mice of the lower temple, twelve sentences are absent here concerning the war with the three fat brothers who had poisoned the king, and how their shields of willow-wield were broken by the herdsmen who knew the hour of the mountain wind.

In the thirty-eighth winter, when the hair upon the scraper’s chin had become white like the wool of a washed lamb, there came to his ditch a great clerk from the city of the stone wharf. This clerk wore a robe of blue wool that had seven rows of pewter buttons, and upon his head sat a hat shaped like an upside-down porridge dish. Behind him walked four servants carrying an iron chest that was bound with four bands of hammered bronze.

“Old dog of the mud,” said the clerk, spitting into the dry dust before the scraper’s feet. “The High Judge of the Great Council has heard that you keep in your dirt an unlawful disc of timber that reveals the number of oxen each man possesses before the tax-taker comes to count the tails. Give to me this board, and take this iron chest which is full of white silver coins that have the face of the queen stamped upon their cheeks. If you give it not, the four men who carry my chest will beat your old shins with these clubs of ash-wood until your marrow runs out upon the red stones.”

The old scraper looked down upon the yellow wood. The fine dust upon the central stone began to swirl without a finger touching it, and it made the shape of an open grave beneath an alder tree where four ravens fought over an empty eyeball.

“O clerk of the blue robe,” said the old man, and his voice was like the whistling of the wind through a broken reed. “The silver of the queen is cold, and my knees are too old to run to the baker’s oven. But if you take this pan of knowledge, take also the ivory bone and the small horn of dust. Touch not the wood with an unclean thumb, and do not use the bone to pry the grease from beneath your fingernails.”

The clerk laughed, and his laughter was like the braying of a wet donkey. He threw the iron chest upon the scraper’s toes, tearing the skin from the old man’s foot. He seized the round board of ironwood by its rim, tucked it beneath his blue cloak, and bade his four servants carry him back to the great city in a wicker chair slung upon two poles.

When the clerk reached the great hall where the twelve councilors sat drinking the spiced wine of the islands, he threw the wooden disc upon the great table of polished walnut. “See here,” he cried, “I have taken from the wild beggar of the ditch the ancient wheel of the spirit. We will know where the merchants of the northern sea have hidden their pearls, and we will know which of our wives has spoken soft words to the young captains of the palace horse!”

The clerk took the ivory stylus. But because his hands were greasy from eating roasted goose, he dropped the stylus into a dish of hot gravy. He wiped the bone upon the tail of his shirt and jabbed the sharp point into the pale stone of the tray. He shouted with a voice that was full of strong drink: “Tell me, O block of wood, what will become of the High Judge on the day of the feast of oxen, and how many bags of yellow gold will he place into my hand for bringing this plate to his house?”

The ivory bone made a sound like an iron nail scraping upon a copper kettle. The little blue crystal that was tied with silver thread did not shine with the soft light of an oil lamp; it flared with a great flash of red smoke that smelled of sulfur, roasted hair, and old bile.

The white powder upon the stone did not form lines of clean writing. It rose into the air like an angry swarm of biting midges. The dust entered into the two nostrils of the clerk, and it entered into the wide hole of his open mouth. The clerk dropped the ivory bone. He clutched his fat throat with both hands, and his tongue swelled out between his teeth until it was purple like an overripe plum.

He did not see the pearls of the merchants. He did not see the bags of gold. He saw with his mind all the words of malice he had written against the widows of the town during the forty years of his clerkship. Each false word was not an ink mark, but a beetle of black horn with six sharp legs. The beetles crawled out from his ears, they crawled out from the corners of his eyes, and they tore his brain into three pieces as a dog tears a dry crust of bread.

The clerk fell across the walnut table, knocking over the flagons of wine and the bowls of fat broth. His heels beat against the floor seven times, like the feet of a slaughtered capon, and then his spirit departed with a whistling hiss like cold beer poured upon hot hearth-stones.

The twelve councilors screamed with one mouth. They took their knives and fled out of the door into the rain, leaving the dead clerk upon the table with his mouth full of grey stone dust.

The round board of ironwood was not burned, because when the kitchen boys brought torches of pitch to destroy it, the wood would not take the flame, but sweat out a cold sap that smelled of copal and sea-mud. The servants carried the board into the dark cellar where the old ledgers and moldy sheep-skins were cast to be eaten by rats. There it lay under three cubits of rotten parchment for an age of men, until the great wave came from the western sea and drowned the city, washing the yellow disc out upon the ocean swell where the sea-birds used it as a dry rock to sit upon while waiting for the fat fish.

And the fishermen of the second island found it floating upon the kelp, and they traded it to a singer of tales for two measures of dry barley, and the scribes of that shore inscribed these words upon the tanned belly of a calf, which have been rendered into this lesser speech with great sorrow and many errors by those who know not the old names of the stars.

Moral of the Story

The mirror that shows the road of another is carved for the foot that walks in humility, but he who grasps the wisdom of heaven to buy fat capons and frighten the weak will choke to death upon the dust of his own days.
