Lore
- In the centuries following the early influx of displaced souls drawn from the multiverse across purgatory by Gaialilith, certain reincarnated wanderers brought memories of Earth and the syncretic island practices of Cuba.
- Among these mortal traditions was Santeria, an intricate faith where ancestral veneration, Catholic saint associations, and the ancient orisha spirits of destiny, divination, and natural crossways converged.
- Upon arriving on the archipelago continents of Saṃsāra, practitioners discovered that the ambient magical weave, the presence of spiritual conduits, and the ever-shifting currents of VaporSphere resonated profoundly with their rites of scrying.
- Without their original ancestral shrines, early diviners sought materials native to the tropical reefs and volcanic coasts to recreate their conduits of divination.
- They gathered deep-sea cowrie shells, white volcanic river stones, and fibrous reeds infused with magic crystalline cells that naturally clustered along local leylines.
- Crafting recipes were meticulously transcribed into parchment grimoires, merging the spirit-whispering rites of Eleguá and Orunmila with the alchemical transmutations practiced under Gaialilith’s domain.
- The number 529 designates the precise consecrated formula rolled and inscribed by artisans within the maritime workshops of the Island Nation of Badarian, where coastal trade guilds frequently commission sacred charms to foresee reef tides, storms, and the intent of approaching vessels.
- Because the spirit world of Saṃsāra intermingles with the residual memories of departed lives and roaming elemental consciousnesses, this talisman serves as an anchor, steadying the mortal mind whenever peering beyond the veil.
Description
- The item is a sacred ritual necklace strung upon braided river-grass cords that have been treated with protective herbal resins, steeped in scented cedar oils, and dried under the noon sun when Helios reaches its zenith.
- Alternating along the strand are precisely twenty-one polished porcelain beads of alternating deep red, jet black, and bone white hues, each etched with micro-runic conduits that channel the wearer’s thought energy.
- Suspended at the center of the necklace is a cluster of three natural cowrie shells, each cut open on the reverse face to expose their hollow centers, through which fine silver thread binds them together.
- Nestled directly beneath the shells hangs a miniature hammered brass bell, missing its clapper so that it does not chime physically, but instead resonates with an internal magical hum detectable through the Mind’s Eye.
- A tiny crystal shard—harvested from a tier 1 reef creature and polished down to the size of a coin—is affixed behind the central shell, serving as an arcane battery that gathers passive ambient mana to power the talisman’s divinatory sight.
- The piece smells faintly of dried tobacco leaf, sweet rum, toasted corn, and ocean salt, an aroma that manifests persistently regardless of how thoroughly the talisman is submerged or cleaned.

- Item Classification: Worn Magical Gear
- Specific Gear Slot: Neck Slot
- Armor Check (AC) Modifier: +1 to total Armor Check (well within the allowable maximum threshold of 3 per item tier)
- Item Resilience: 10
- Item Health Points: Avatar maximum Health Points plus 10 (calculated as base avatar max HP plus resilience of 10 multiplied by item tier 1)
- Structural Integrity: The item becomes broken and loses all magical functionality if reduced to half its total health points or below; it is utterly destroyed into original raw components if reduced to 0 health points.
- Item Weight: 1 pound (negligible weight that counts toward standard worn encumbrance limits but loses all physical weight if transferred into an extradimensional pouch)
- Attunement Requirement: Simple attunement (requires sixty seconds of deliberate meditative focus while held or worn openly; ceases to function and unattunes if placed within extradimensional storage)
- Suggested Market Value: Varies widely based on local island availability, raw cowrie supply, and vendor demand; non-binding baseline recommendation of 15 silver to 25 silver in coastal port markets, with higher valuations in landlocked interior states.
Passive Magic
- Sight of the Crossroads:
- While the talisman is openly displayed around the neck and exposed to visual line of sight, the wearer’s Mind’s Eye is sharpened when assessing environmental pathways, intersections, and physical portals.
- The avatar passively perceives subtle ethereal currents swirling around forks in a road, doorway thresholds, and subterranean tunnel splits, granting an instinctive hunch regarding which path harbors active magical movement or physical obstruction.
- This subtle perception alerts the wearer to concealed Fae Portals, allowing the user to notice the faint, shimmering dimensional seam of a portal approach vector before accidentally walking through it from the designated angle.
- Spiritual Attunement of the Ancestors:
- The wearer gains a constant intuitive resonance when handling relics, gravestones, burial markers, or soul-bound remnants.
- Whenever the avatar examines a corpse or soul crystal left behind after an encounter, the cowrie shells grow gently warm against the chest, silently conveying the former creature’s broad tier level, general disposition in life, and whether it possessed active past-life memories prior to death.
- This intuitive flow provides mental clarity, granting a +2 bonus to any investigative checks made using the Mind’s Eye to glean historical details or forgotten lore surrounding ancient sites.
- Warding of the White Cloth:
- The sacred consecration placed upon the beads generates a faint protective field of deflecting energy across the torso.
- Whenever a sudden surprise attack or ambushing strike is launched against the wearer, the dormant brass bell vibrates, solidifying the wearer’s defenses and providing the flat +1 Armor Check bonus toward defending against the incoming blow.
Activable Magic
- The Cast of the Diloggún (Divination of the Sixteen Shells):
- Action Cost: One standard action (costs one of the character’s available actions for the turn).
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: Normal somatic chant; the avatar must cup the central cowrie cluster in their palm, speak a short reverent invocation to Eleguá under six seconds, and gently shake the talisman.
- Effect: The internal brass bell sounds a clear astral chime audible only to the user, causing the shells to glow with a faint violet luminescence.
- The caster poses a single distinct question regarding an immediate course of action, an impending physical threat, or a hidden danger within the local area (such as “Is there an ambush lying beyond this gate?” or “Does this chest contain a destructive magical ward?”).
- The spirit energy responds directly into the user’s mind with an omen manifested as one of three distinct mental visions: an open white doorway (indicating favorable, unobstructed outcomes), a tangled briar patch (indicating deception, concealed traps, or imminent danger), or a veil of dense mist (indicating that destiny is clouded, uncertain, or actively shielded by opposing magic).
- Cooldown: This active divination requires significant mental focus and can be invoked up to three times per in-game day. If used more frequently, the connection strains the user’s Mind’s Eye, inducing the Dazed condition for one full minute upon completion of the casting.
- Eshu’s Opening:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: Ritual chant; requires at least ten continuous seconds of uninterrupted singing or chanting while touching the cowrie pendant to a locked, barred, or mysteriously sealed physical mechanism.
- Effect: The user appeals to the master of gates to reveal the structural weaknesses of the mechanism.
- The magic crystal inside the talisman pulses with concentrated ultraviolet radiance, projecting an overlay of illuminated lines visible only through the user’s Mind’s Eye.
- This projection illustrates the internal layout of the lock, tumbler positions, tension levers, or magical latch points within the contraption.
- By exposing the internal components, the avatar receives an advantage on their immediate check rolled to pick, bypass, or physically dismantle the locking mechanism.
- Cooldown: Usable once per long rest. Avatars gain nothing from a short rest, meaning the spiritual reservoir inside the crystalline cells must recharge over an entire twenty-two-hour day cycle before this ability can be channeled again.
- Libation Scrying of the Clear Basin:
- Action Cost: One out-of-combat exploration action (requires five continuous minutes of quiet concentration).
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: Ritual action; the avatar must unloop the talisman from their neck, immerse the pendant into a small bowl or puddle of clean water, and offer three drops of fresh fruit juice, rum, or biological sap drawn with a fluid collector.
- Effect: The surface of the liquid stills, tension builds across the water, and the reflective surface functions as a temporary scrying pool.
- The user can view a clear, floating projection of any known individual, allied party member, or previously scouted location that is within a three-mile radius.
- The vision lasts for exactly sixty seconds, providing visual line of sight of the target and their immediate physical surroundings, though it transmits no auditory information.
- If the scried creature is possessed by a character soul or holds a higher tier than the caster, the target’s Mind’s Eye may register a sudden sensation of being observed, prompting them to turn around or search their surroundings.
- Cooldown: Usable once per in-game day.

Commerce and Acquisition of the Crossroads Cowrie in Saṃsāra
- Apothecary and Botánica Family Ateliers:
- Physical Location and Structure: Small family-owned apothecary storefronts, traditionally called botánicas or spirit curio stalls, are commonly nestled within the mid-tier districts of port cities across island nations such as Badarian, Aterian, or Tasian. Because large institutional stores do not exist on Saṃsāra, these shops operate under strict family lineages where artisans continuously alter their worn attuned gear to match their daily crafting specializations. The storefronts feature display counters carved from local ironwood, walls lined with drying bundles of wild sage, tobacco, and sea-grasses, and glass bell jars holding preserved reagents harvested with fluid collectors.
- Buying Procedure and Pricing: When acquiring Santeria 529 of the Crossroads Cowrie from a botánica merchant, the establishment operates under the prevailing sellers’ market ethos where pricing is determined entirely by current local demand, availability of consecrated cowries, and access to fresh reef materials. The suggested baseline value of this tier 1 item is set at 20 silver coins (or 2 gold coins).
- Under standard commerce rules, a buyer without formal credentials pays the full asking price of 20 silver coins.
- If the purchasing character holds active membership within the local Alchemists’ or Herbalists’ Guild and wears their faction badge openly, a discount applies equal to 10% times the character’s tier level; a tier 1 member receives a 10% discount, purchasing the talisman for 18 silver coins, while a tier 2 member receives a 20% discount, lowering the purchase price to 16 silver coins.
- Transactions in registered botánicas are processed through the World Bank system, where the funds are transferred directly from the buyer’s account balance as viewed through their Mind’s Eye, accompanied by local municipal sales taxes of 3% within town or city boundaries.
- Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Avatars seeking to sell the talisman to a recognized apothecary merchant must present the item openly for physical inspection, allowing the shopkeeper to use their Mind’s Eye to verify the item’s tier, resilience, and lack of structural breakage.
- Standard NPC merchants haggle aggressively, offering an exchange rate based around 10% of the item’s baseline value multiplied by the tier level of the selling character; for a tier 1 avatar, the merchant offers roughly 2 silver coins (10% of 20 silver), whereas a tier 2 avatar can secure approximately 4 silver coins (20% of 20 silver).
- The resulting payout is credited directly into the character’s World Bank ledger, and the merchant enters a written log detailing the seller’s physical description and the serial formula number 529, exposing the seller to future inquiry should town marshals investigate the provenance of consecrated spirit gear.
- Seaport Wharf Curio Stalls and Coastal Pavilions:
- Physical Location and Structure: Located along the salt-sprayed outer docks of major naval capitals, these open-air wooden stalls sit adjacent to the great covered wagon terminals and griffon roosts. Because raw cowrie shells and reef-born magic crystalline cells are extracted directly from coastal shallows and arriving sailing vessels, dockside dealers specialize in maritime charms, tidal divination fetishes, and navigators’ wards.
- Buying Procedure and Pricing: Because supply is highest near marine habitats, seaport stalls frequently mark down the baseline valuation of the talisman due to local surplus, setting the retail asking price around 15 silver coins.
- Visiting foreign sailors, non-citizens, and transient adventurers are subject to higher operational margins under the “buyer beware” convention, often being quoted 25 silver coins or more if the merchant detects an urgent maritime excursion.
- Registered members of the Maritime Navigators’ Faction or Sailors’ Guild who openly display their faction badges receive the standard institutional discount of 10% per character tier level off the merchant’s base rate, permitting a tier 1 character to buy the item for 13 silver and 5 copper coins.
- Transactions require the payment of the standard municipal seaport fees (1 silver coin per individual crossing the harbor gates), with payments logged into the World Bank network.
- Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Coastal vendors operate with lower cash reserves than interior guildhalls, often resisting outright purchases unless there is immediate demand from outbound sea captains.
- When selling the talisman here, the base valuation of 15 silver coins serves as the anchor; an avatar of tier 1 receives 1 silver and 5 copper coins (10%), while a tier 2 avatar receives 3 silver coins (20%), deposited straight to their bank account.
- If the vendor’s stock of divination charms is full, the merchant will outright refuse the transaction or demand that the avatar trade for equivalent weights of raw consumable items or fluid-collector saps instead of monetary credit.
- Inland Guildhalls and Arcane Reagent Exchanges:
- Physical Location and Structure: Set deep in the interior capital cities near the central palaces and the great permanent teleportation circles, these grand guildhalls are maintained by appointed military and trade officials. Within these stone-vaulted halls, separate suites of offices cater to registered technomancers, enchanters, and ritualists who acquire consecrated components for item-merging recipes.
- Buying Procedure and Pricing: In landlocked central cities, the cost of access and shipping logistics across state borders (which incurs a 5% border transit tax plus a 1% central passage tax) drastically inflates the local value of coastal divination foci.
- Within these formal exchanges, the Crossroads Cowrie is rarely sold for less than 35 to 40 silver coins (3.5 to 4 gold coins).
- Guild affiliates holding certified artisan or scrying memberships receive their full discount rate (10% per tier of the character), reducing a 40 silver asking price to 36 silver for a tier 1 member and 32 silver for a tier 2 member.
- The transaction is fully legitimized, and the purchasing avatar receives an official guild certificate proving that the item is not stolen, which protects the owner from confiscation during guard inspections along military toll roads.
- Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Guild officials buy items to supply regional research efforts, historical deciphering, and public works defense projects.
- An avatar selling this item to a certified guild master calculates returns against the inflated inland market value of 40 silver coins; a tier 1 seller earns 4 silver coins, while a tier 3 avatar gains 12 silver coins (30% of the baseline value).
- High-tier characters often prefer selling here because official guild funds are immediately accessible and fully documented, clearing the avatar of any suspicion regarding illicit looting.
- Black-Market Alleys and Secluded Den Enclaves:
- Physical Location and Structure: Operating outside the oversight of city mayors, municipal tax assessors, and royal courts, black-market dens are hidden behind unmarked cellar doors, steam-pipe maintenance tunnels, or within the labyrinthine underbelly of cave megacities. These illicit operations specialize in untraceable goods, items stripped from dead avatars in unsafe zones, and charms that have bypassed state and royal import levies.
- Buying Procedure and Pricing: Black-market merchants maintain a strict policy of non-involvement regarding the origins of merchandise, keeping zero logs of clientele or acquisitions.
- The price to purchase the talisman through these illicit fences is never discounted; black-market sellers always charge the absolute maximum rate the market will bear, typically setting the price between 30 and 50 silver coins (3 to 5 gold coins), regardless of the buyer’s faction affiliations or guild status.
- Guild badges and institutional credentials provide no mechanical discount in these dens; attempting to demand a faction reduction will result in immediate ejection or inflated quotes.
- All black-market purchases must be executed strictly with physical coins—preferably gold, electrum, or silver metal currency—as these syndicates refuse to interact with the god of commerce’s World Bank ledger to avoid legal scrutiny.
- Selling Procedure and Trade Log: Avatars seeking immediate, discreet disposal of the talisman find black-market fences advantageous if the item was retrieved under questionable circumstances or without paying local salvage taxes.
- A standard black-market dealer will match standard merchant rates, paying approximately 10% of the item’s baseline value per tier level of the seller directly in hand-to-hand physical coin.
- If the fence or their patron has an urgent operational requirement for an untraceable divination focus—such as planning an evasive route around royal patrols or bypassing a guarded Fae Portal—they may offer up to twice the standard merchant payout, yielding 4 silver coins to a tier 1 seller or 8 silver coins to a tier 2 seller, paid instantly in physical precious metal without generating any official log or bureaucratic trail.
Tactical Roleplay of the Crossroads Cowrie Across the Environments of Saṃsāra
- Dense Wilds and Encroaching Plant Jungles:
- Environmental Context: Outside the fortified settlements of the 73 island nations lie untamed biospheres locked in an ancient, ongoing war between toxic, aggressive flora and living fauna. The ground is carpeted in choking roots, toxic spore-pods, and razor-sharp vines that actively react to vibrations and ambient heat.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While picking a path through the suffocating canopy where Helios barely penetrates, the avatar lets the talisman hang exposed against their outer tunic, ensuring the line-of-sight requirement remains active.
- As the party approaches a deceptive clearing bordered by strangler kelp-moss, the wearer grasps the central cluster of three cowrie shells, spending an action to murmur a brief somatic invocation under six seconds to invoke The Cast of the Diloggún.
- Roleplaying this ability involves describing the wearer freezing mid-step, their breath catching as the silent brass bell hums against their collarbone, flooding their Mind’s Eye with a sudden internal vision of twisting thorns dripping with corrosive resin.
- The avatar raises a clenched fist to halt the marching line, roleplaying the interpretation of the omen by describing the spiritual warning to their companions, declaring that the seemingly open path ahead is an active predatory snare.
- When a concealed thorn-spitter beast unleashes a sudden volley of barbed needles from the undergrowth, the avatar narrates the Warding of the White Cloth taking effect: the bone-white beads rattle faintly with a soft white glow, interposing a momentary invisible barrier that deflects the incoming projectile, validating the +1 Armor Check bonus against the ambush.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When stalking a venomous jungle prowler back to its hollow, the avatar uses an action to initiate Eshu’s Opening against an overgrown, vine-entangled stone bulkhead concealing the creature’s den.
- The player narrates their avatar dropping to one knee, chanting steadily for ten continuous seconds, running their fingertips over the polished cowrie shells and pressing them directly to the stone seals.
- The crystal behind the talisman flares with ultraviolet light visible through the Mind’s Eye, highlighting the structural stress points and root fissures holding the barrier together, enabling the party’s frontline striker to smash the blockage on their turn and catch the creature flat-footed in its lair.
- Open Ocean Voyages and Uncharted Reef Networks:
- Environmental Context: Sailing vessels crossing the vast seas must navigate strong east-to-west currents and deceptive coral formations that thrive in the warm coastal waters of nations like Badarian or Tasian. Navigational errors often lead to hull breaches on jagged coral shelves or sudden encounters with predatory leviathans rising from the deep trenches.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Standing at the ship’s bowsprit during the turbulent transition between the early-n-day and morning hours, the avatar monitors the surface waters for navigational hazards.
- Through the passive Sight of the Crossroads, the wearer observes subtle ethereal currents dancing across the sea surface, recognizing the visual distinction between deep, navigable water channels and the jagged, magic-dense reefs hidden just beneath the swell.
- If an approaching fog bank conceals a hostile corsair vessel or a lurking waterborne construct, the avatar performs The Cast of the Diloggún, cupping the cowries and rolling them between their palms with a hushed prayer.
- The player narrates their avatar suddenly recoiling from an inner vision of dense mist parted by jagged black iron, immediately shouting to the helmsman to alter heading hard to port, thereby evading an incoming ramming maneuver before combat initiative is rolled.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- During shipboard engagements or when tracking pirate vessels across regional waters, the avatar retreats to the captain’s quarters to conduct the Libation Scrying of the Clear Basin.
- The player describes setting down a shallow bowl of clean rainwater, carefully extracting three drops of refined citrus oil or organic tree distillate gathered via a fluid collector, and submerging the cowrie pendant into the center of the liquid.
- For sixty continuous seconds, the avatar’s eyes glaze over as the water’s surface stills into a mirror, projecting a silent, high-angle view of the enemy ship three miles away, revealing the positions of the crew, their deck-mounted harpoon siege engines, and the exact direction their sails are trimmed.
- The avatar then runs onto the main deck to relay this telemetry to the deck gunners, granting the crew a decisive first-strike advantage as they close the distance.
- Subterranean Cave Megacities and Deep Dungeon Vaults:
- Environmental Context: Immense cavern complexes beneath the islands house dark trade settlements, ancient mining shafts, and subterranean ruins scarred by wild magic storms. These enclosed stone environments feature confusing three-dimensional tunnels, acoustic echoes, and hidden Fae Portals that swallow unwary wanderers.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Moving through pitch-black tunnels where the air smells of sulfur and damp stone, the avatar keeps their hands close to the talisman to maintain contact.
- When the party reaches a dizzying nexus of four diverging cave tubes, the Sight of the Crossroads provides critical spatial awareness: the avatar points out a faint, shimmering, directional tear across the leftmost tunnel entrance, warning the party that stepping into that passage from the current angle will trigger an invisible Fae Portal that could banish them to another realm entirely.
- If a cavern stalker drops silently from the stalactites to strike at the avatar from above, the player narrates the talisman’s internal crystal pulsing with sudden heat against their chest, the brass bell giving off an astral resonance that forces the attacker’s claws to glance harmlessly off an invisible deflection field.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Upon locating a sealed vault door reinforced with ancient dwarven tumblers or runic lock mechanisms, the avatar steps forward to spend an action performing Eshu’s Opening.
- Chanting a solemn cadence that echoes off the stone walls for ten full seconds, the avatar touches the central cowrie to the cold iron faceplate.
- The player roleplays looking through their Mind’s Eye as the lock’s internal pins, tumblers, and hidden needle traps are laid bare in glowing lines of ultraviolet light, calling out precise instructions to the party’s rogue or using their own thieves’ tools to bypass the lock with absolute mechanical efficiency.
- When dealing with corpses of fallen dungeon guardians, the avatar touches the shells to the slain form, roleplaying the Spiritual Attunement of the Ancestors by narrating the faint sensory impression of the creature’s former life, determining its tier level and ensuring it holds no active death-curse or lingering past-life trap before the party searches the remains.
- Urban Capital Streets and High-Court Palace Grounds:
- Environmental Context: The bustling streets of central capital cities are dominated by sprawling marketplaces, multi-story masonry buildings, covered wagon traffic, and the ever-present eyes of state guards, guild spies, and royal tax collectors.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Navigating crowded thoroughfares where black-market syndicates and pickpockets operate, the avatar wears the talisman tucked slightly over their collar, balancing visibility with modesty.
- If an assassin or corrupt municipal enforcer attempts to slip through the crowd to plant a false incriminating mark or strike with a poisoned dagger, the Warding of the White Cloth activates automatically: the white porcelain beads flare with an imperceptible kinetic push, disrupting the attacker’s trajectory and causing the blade to catch harmlessly on the thick cloth of the avatar’s garments.
- During intense social standoffs or high-stakes diplomatic inquiries inside the Royal Court, the avatar discretely invokes The Cast of the Diloggún, posing an internal question regarding whether an ambassador’s sweet-spoken offer harbors treachery.
- The player describes their avatar pausing, maintaining a calm exterior while their Mind’s Eye witnesses a momentary flash of tangled briars, prompting the avatar to decline the treaty or renegotiate terms with extreme caution.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- In political espionage scenarios, such as locating a renegade noble or tracking an elusive black-market fence hiding within the city’s warehouse district, the avatar conducts Libation Scrying of the Clear Basin inside an inn room.
- Sacrificing three drops of aromatic floral extract into a porcelain water bowl, the avatar watches the ripples settle to reveal the fugitive counting ill-gotten coin purses inside a specific tavern cellar within three miles.
- Armed with this visual confirmation of the target’s exact room and physical layout, the avatar leads the city marshals or their party members directly to the hideout, preventing the fugitive from fleeing before the authorities can serve a warrant of banishment.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- Sight:
- The physical borders of the immediate environment dim slightly as ambient light takes on a violet, ultraviolet cast.
- The three central cowrie shells radiate a soft purple luminescence that casts moving shadows across the wearer’s hands and chest.
- Glowing geometric fracture lines and luminous threads trace across the air, highlighting doors, keyways, physical seams, and spatial intersections.
- Sound:
- A resonant, hollow brass tolling rings out directly between the ears, echoing as if inside an immense empty cathedral despite the hanging bell having no physical clapper.
- The faint, rhythmic rustling of dried palm fronds and distant ocean breakers fills the background silence, masking immediate ambient noises.
- Touch:
- A sudden wave of dry heat spreads outward from the sternum where the small crystal battery rests, warming the collarbone like direct noon sunlight.
- The porcelain beads feel distinctly cold and smooth, vibrating with a rapid, insect-like tremor against the skin of the neck.
- A prickling, static charge raises the hair along the forearms and nape of the neck as magical current flows into the talisman.
- Smell:
- A sharp wave of pungent dried cigar leaf, burnt sugar cane, and warm spiced rum flares intensely in the nostrils.
- An underlying scent of salty ocean brine and sun-baked river reeds cuts through the sweetness, cutting off all local sewer, mud, or cavern odors.
- Taste:
- A distinct metallic tang reminiscent of brass filings and copper coins pools under the tongue.
- A sweet, earthy trace of toasted white cornmeal and cane syrup settles on the back of the palate, leaving the throat slightly dry.
- Extra-Sensory Perception:
- Mind’s Eye Overlay: The user experiences an instantaneous mental projection of pathways and hidden hazards, where physical locks reveal their inner pins and forks in the road appear marked by symbolic omens of open archways or tangled briars.
- Ancestral Presence: A strong sensation of multiple invisible observers standing shoulder-to-shoulder behind the user manifests, offering an unmistakable intuitive urge that pushes the avatar toward safety or alerts them to impending deception.
- Spatial Tension: The user feels an ethereal pull in the gut when facing a directional gateway, experiencing a distinct magnetic tug that points precisely toward the active vector of hidden Fae Portals.
- Sight:
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Sight:
- The cluster of cowrie shells at the center of the talisman flares with a steady ultraviolet glow, illuminating the wearer’s throat and jaw in pale purple hues.
- The small gemstone tucked behind the shells emits a concentrated point of violet light that glints brightly off the hand-carved runes on the porcelain beads.
- The air directly surrounding the wearer’s chest wavers with subtle heat distortions, causing the fabric of their clothing to look slightly out of focus.
- Sound:
- Observers hear no loud physical chime, but those standing within five feet catch a faint, ethereal hum resembling a distant brass tuning fork held in the air.
- A soft, rhythmic clicking sound emerges from the necklace as the beads and shells vibrate lightly against one another.
- Touch:
- Anyone standing immediately adjacent to the user feels a gentle push of dry, warm air radiating outward, accompanied by a minor static shock if they make physical contact with the wearer’s garments.
- Smell:
- Nearby allies and bystanders detect an abrupt, sweet waft of cured pipe tobacco, dark rum, and coastal sea salt drifting across the immediate vicinity.
- Taste:
- Sensitive creatures or magically attuned observers nearby experience a fleeting dryness on their tongues and a faint hint of sweet honeyed grain in the air.
- Extra-Sensory Perception:
- Observers possessing an active Mind’s Eye perceive the wearer’s presence blooming outward in a bright ultraviolet aura, marking the avatar as actively channeling divination magic.
- High-tier entities or characters with past-life memories perceive the faint, shimmering silhouette of a watchful spirit standing momentarily behind the wearer before dissolving into the air.
- Sight:
- Positives:
- Immediate Environmental Clarity:
- Concealed mechanisms, locking pins, structural weak points, and dangerous spatial anomalies are highlighted directly in the user’s perception without requiring physical dismantling.
- Early Warning Utility:
- The combination of the astral toll and the protective ward provides a decisive heads-up against incoming stealth attacks and predatory ambushes.
- Intuitive Pathfinding:
- The user receives clear, unmistakable omens regarding whether an immediate route or choice leads to danger or unobstructed progress.
- Reliable Lineage Resonance:
- Handling remains or soul crystals immediately yields tier and past-life confirmation, protecting the party from triggering trapped corpses or dormant death curses.
- Immediate Environmental Clarity:
- Negatives:
- Sensory Compromise:
- The intense internal chime and surrounding spiritual scents temporarily drown out subtle environmental cues, such as faint footsteps or distant whispered conversations.
- Visual Exposure:
- The bright ultraviolet and purple illumination emitted by the shells and crystal makes stealth virtually impossible in dark environments while the activation lasts.
- Physical and Mental Strain:
- Repeated activations strain the user’s focus, risking disorientation, dull headaches, and the temporary onset of the Dazed condition if forced beyond the daily limit.
- Spiritual Vulnerability:
- The active flare of divination magic can be detected immediately by foreign scryers, high-tier foes, or entities sensitive to the weave, broadcasting the user’s presence across the local area.
- Sensory Compromise:
Crafting Recipe: Santeria Talisman of the Crossroads
- Materials Needed:
- 3 intact saltwater cowrie shells harvested from coastal reefs.
- 1 Tier 1 magic crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested from a slain creature or purchased from a reagent merchant).
- 21 raw porcelain or fine ceramic clay beads (7 colored jet black, 7 colored deep red, 7 colored bone white).
- 3 feet of fibrous river-reed cordage, dried and braided.
- 1 miniature clapperless brass bell (hammered brass casing).
- 1 dram of refined tree sap extracted with a fluid collector (used as an alchemical binding agent).
- 3 drams of spiced cane rum and 1 leaf of cured dried tobacco (sacrificial consumable reagents to consecrate the spirit channel).
- 1 spool of fine silver thread (for binding the central cluster).
- Tools Required:
- 1 Fluid Collector (used for extracting and measuring organic saps and plant distillates).
- 1 Jeweler’s or carver’s awl (for grinding openings into the reverse of the cowrie shells and piercing beads).
- 1 Engraving burin (for inscribing micro-runes into the ceramic beads).
- 1 Small bronze or ceramic mortar and pestle (for mixing herb and mineral resins).
- 1 Portable brazier or steady flame source (for curing resins and sealing knots).
- Skill Requirements:
- Jeweler / Trinket Crafting: Minimum skill rank of 5.
- Alchemical Crafting: Minimum skill rank of 3.
- Mind’s Eye Focusing / Scrying: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to align the runic channels with the ambient weave).
- Crafting Steps:
- Preparation of the Shells and Bell:
- Take the 3 saltwater cowries and secure them flat against a work surface.
- Using the carver’s awl, grind away the curved humped back of each shell until the hollow interior chamber is cleanly exposed, leaving the natural serrated slit intact on the opposite side.
- Thread the silver wire through the hollow chambers of all three shells, arranging them into a fan cluster with the central shell pointing downward.
- Affix the small hammered brass bell directly beneath the bottom shell using the silver wire, ensuring the suspension loop is tightly crimped so the bell hangs without a clapper.
- Crystal Battery Alignment:
- Position the Tier 1 magic crystal directly behind the junction where the three cowrie shells meet.
- Using the fluid collector, dispense 1 dram of harvested tree sap along the back edges of the crystal to act as an organic setting resin.
- Bind the crystal firmly against the shells using the remaining silver thread, looping the wire in a cross-weave pattern to ensure the crystal stays exposed to ambient air.
- Gently heat the binding over the brazier flame to harden the tree sap into a firm, clear amber seal.
- Inscribing and Threading the Beads:
- Take the 21 ceramic beads and divide them into equal groups of 7 red, 7 black, and 7 white.
- With the engraving burin, etch fine conduit grooves into the surface of each bead to guide mental focus.
- Thread the river-reed cordage through the beads in a repeating sequence of one black, one red, and one white until all 21 beads are strung.
- Knot the braided cord securely through the top loops of the cowrie and crystal cluster, allowing the beads to drape symmetrically on either side.
- Consecration and Weave Infusion:
- Place the assembled necklace into a shallow wooden or stone dish.
- Moisten the cured tobacco leaf with the 3 drams of cane rum and crush the mixture lightly using the mortar and pestle until the oils release.
- Rub the crushed aromatic mixture across the cowrie shells, ceramic beads, and brass bell, coating the surfaces evenly.
- Focus through the Mind’s Eye, actively channeling thought energy into the Tier 1 crystal until the gemstone begins to draw ambient mana from the surrounding air.
- Maintain continuous concentration for five minutes while the liquid evaporates, finalizing the bond when the crystal emits a steady ultraviolet pulse and the clapperless bell produces its first silent, resonant hum.
- Preparation of the Shells and Bell:
Three Bones of Salt-Worm and Horned Mouth that Wept Smoke
In the before of the grand turning, when the sky was yet greasy with the fat of unshaped clouds, there walked the walker whose name was written as three notches upon a wet leaf. Some stone-scratchers call him The First Beggar of the Salt Path, though in the dialect of the river people he is called the Man Whose Throat Held No Fire. He possessed no roof, neither did he possess five sheep, nor even the bone needles wherewith a woman stitches the coats of barking foxes. He walked only upon the dirt that had no king, which was plentiful in the days before the seven crowns were washed out of the mud.
It was told by the grandmothers who have lost their teeth that the walker came to the place where four rivers poured into one hole. In that hole lived the ancient thing which was not a fish, neither was it a serpent, but a large thickness of skin having fourteen eyes that opened only when a lie was swallowed. The walker sat upon his heels, because his sandals had long since been digested by the red marshes of the coast. He took from his rag a gourd that was cracked and dried in the heat of Helios when the sun was green.
“O Grandfather of the Wet Crack,” said the walker, speaking through his left cheek because the right was stiffened by an arrow wound taken in a kingdom that had sunk into the salt. “I have carried my feet until they are as hard as the horn of a dead bull. I wish to know if the mountain ahead of me is made of soft meal or if it is merely a high stone that will break the knees of my sons.”
The thick skin of the hole stirred. A smell came forth which was the odor of a drowned dog that had been wrapped in dried reeds and burnt under a copper kettle. From the dark liquid there rose up not an idol, but the elbow of an older man that ended in a hand having seven small mouths. Each mouth held a tooth of sea-cowrie. The mouths chewed upon the dark water and made a clatter like pebbles shaken in a horse bladder.
“You ask the direction of the dirt,” the elbow rasped, using the voice of a girl who had fallen into a deep well during the winter of the cold star. “Yet you have brought no grease to rub upon my wrist. You have brought no sweet cane that has been squeezed between two wooden rollers. You have only the dry dust of your knees and the wind that enters through the holes of your teeth.”
The walker bowed his skull until his forehead touched the slime of the rim. “I have no sweet grease, King of the Hand. But I have the small seed that fell from the belly of a bird that died while flying across the great smoke. It is a round bead of dirt that has been burnt until it is white as milk. I have also the black bead that was found in the dung of the beetle that eats the charcoal of kings. I have also the red bead that was picked from the ear of the red ox before the slaughterers broke its knees.”
The mouths upon the hand opened together. They did not bite the walker, but they spit into the dirt three times. Where the spit landed, there were not drops of wetness, but three small snail-houses of the salty water, white as the eye of an old hound, and between them lay a very small bell of beaten metal that had no tongue inside its head to strike its cheek.
“Take these shells which are the ears of the deep,” said the voice of the girl from the elbow. “Tie them with the hair of the river grass that grows where the dead women wash their aprons. Hang them before your breastbone so that your heart beats against their bellies. When you walk, do not look with the two meat eyes that see only the grass and the stones. Look with the knot that sits behind your temples, which is the blind eye of the multi-formed mother.”
The walker gathered the three snail-houses and the little bell of yellow metal that could not cry out. He took the three beads of white clay, and the three beads of black clay, and the three beads of red clay, and he strung them upon the tough guts of a river reed that he had softened with the grease of his own nose. He placed the heavy loop over his neck, and immediately his stomach felt as though he had swallowed a live coal wrapped in pig lard.
He turned toward the north-road, where the tall grasses grew as high as a spearman’s beard. As he put his foot upon the mud, the small yellow bell, having no tongue within it, did not speak, but his chest heard a great roaring like a brass tub thrown down a stone stair. His mind was struck with the sight of a black ditch full of copper snakes that waited to eat the skin from the heels of travelers. The walker stopped. His right leg began to tremble with the shaking of a dry gourd.
“The path is narrow,” cried the walker to his own ribs. “It is full of the teeth of beasts that have no noses!”
He turned then his back to the north and set his nose toward the place where the sun goes down to drink the bitter broth of the ocean. He walked three furlongs, and his throat was filled with the smoke of cured weeds, though there was no kitchen fire within forty miles of that marsh. He perceived through his skull that the road of the sunset was an open gate fashioned of clean bleached bone, through which an ox might walk without brushing its ears against the posts.
He ran along that dry trail. Yet because the translation from the leaf-scroll was eaten by the worms of the lower valley, three sentences are lost here concerning the encounter with the horned ape that carried the iron pot.
When the walker reached the house of the widow who had seven sons with twisted toes, the sons ran out with long staves of ash-wood, thinking to beat the walker until his hide could be sold for grease. But as the eldest son lifted his club, which was heavy with lead poured into its head, the three cowrie shells upon the walker’s breastbone showed their white bellies. The eldest son saw not a beggar, but a great woman with eight wings who stood behind the man and held a net of brass wire that smelled of sea-mud. The son let fall his stick and his water ran out upon the stones.
“This beggar carries the small door upon his neck,” the sons cried to their mother. “If we hit his ribs, the bell that does not speak will break our heads from within our ears!”
The walker lived in that village for forty years, sitting ever beneath the shade of a fig tree that bore only dry skins. When the village people desired to steal the fat oxen from the next valley, they brought to him a cup of sour beer and three leaves of the stink-weed. He would take the shell necklace and drop it into a clay pot of ditch-water. He would stare into the dirty puddle until his eyes became white like boiled eggs. Then he would speak in the tongue of the horned fish, saying: “Go not by the willow ditch, for the men of the valley have sharpened thirty stakes of red cedar and have covered them with the dung of swine so that your feet will swell until they burst like melons. Go rather by the dry ditch where the old sheep died, for the watchman there has fallen into the heavy sleep that comes from eating the grey fungus.”
And the people went, and they took seventy cows, and they lost not even a single toenail.
Yet it happened in the forty-first winter that a young man whose chin was covered in red fuzz became envious of the walker’s meat-portions. The young man said to his companions: “Why do we give the tail-fat and the sweet marrow to this old dog whose skin is covered in grey scabs? He has no strength to hold a sickle. He only shakes his little brass kettle and looks into the mud like a sow.”
In the hour when Helios was drowned in the great kettle of the west, the red-chinned youth crept behind the walker’s tree. He carried a heavy hammer of the sort used to drive wooden wedges into green oak. He struck the walker upon the nape of the neck with such force that the old man’s chin was driven into his breast. The walker became like water that is poured out of a cracked bowl. He did not yell, but his spirit left his skin with a sound like a wet hide being pulled from a butcher’s peg.
The young man laughed with a wide mouth. He reached his red fingers down and tore the necklace of shells and clay beads from the dead neck. The cords of river reed were stiff with forty years of sweat and the grease of roasted goats. The young man threw the string around his own throat, and he shook the little brass bell with his thumb.
Instantly, his two eyes became like two cold stones. He did not see the road. He did not see the fence. He saw all the dead grandfathers of the valley standing in a circle, their skins painted with blue chalk, each holding a long iron spade. The dead grandfathers did not speak with words, but they struck their spades together, making a noise like the breaking of ten thousand clay platters. The young man’s brain became like warm porridge that has been stirred with an elder-stick. He ran through the village screaming with the voice of a pig that is dragged toward the scalding barrel.
He ran into the marsh where the four waters met in the hole. He did not stop his feet. He ran directly into the mouth of the thick skin that had fourteen eyes. The water made a sound like a hot stone plunged into sour milk, and he was seen no more by his brothers or by his sisters who carried the water jugs.
The necklace of the three cowries was not eaten by the thick skin. It was washed back upon the mud by the third tide of the winter solstice. A swine-herd found it sticking to the rib of an old dog. Not knowing that it was the tongue of the crossways, he sold it to a passing peddler of tin spoons for two small pieces of dried fish that were full of salt. The peddler took it across the salt-sea in a boat with three crooked sails, and there the scribes of the second kingdom made these marks upon the dried sheep-skin, which have been read with much difficulty by those whose eyes are weak.
Moral of the Story
The eye that looks through the bone can show the foot where to tread, but he who steals the sight of another will be led by his own ears into the belly of the worm.

Crossroads Talisman of the Orisha Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)
- Item Profile:
- Worn: Neck slot
- Weight: 1 lb.
- Description: A necklace strung with twenty-one ceramic beads in alternating bands of red, black, and white. At the base hangs a cluster of three polished saltwater cowrie shells mounted over a clapperless brass bell, backed by a faintly glowing violet focus crystal. The charm carries the persistent aroma of cured tobacco, spiced rum, and sea salt.
- Traits and Passive Properties:
- Ward of the Threshold: While wearing this attuned talisman openly, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class against opportunity attacks and readied attacks triggered by your movement.
- Crossroads Sense: You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to locate secret doors, concealed passages, architectural weak points, or hidden environmental hazards such as sinkholes, tripwires, and planar portals.
- Active Features:
- Cast of the Diloggún: As an action, you can hold the cowrie cluster, speak a brief prayer to the guardian of the ways, and divine the immediate future. This functions as the Augury spell, requiring no material components. The omen manifests through the talisman’s silent brass bell as an astral resonance accompanied by an internal vision of an open gateway (Weal), a tangle of iron briars (Woe), a balance scale (Weal and Woe), or a veil of impenetrable mist (Nothing). Once you use this property, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
- Unlocking the Path: As an action, you touch the cowrie shells to a nonmagical lock, latch, or barring mechanism while chanting for three rounds. The focus crystal flares with pale violet light, revealing the internal tumblers and tension points. You gain advantage on the next Dexterity check using thieves’ tools made to bypass that mechanism within the next minute. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the next dawn.
- Basin of Distant Waters: Over the course of 10 minutes, you can immerse the talisman in a basin of still water and offer three drops of alcohol, oil, or sap. This produces the effect of the Scrying spell, but it can only target a creature or location within 3 miles that you have personally seen, and it transmits only visual imagery (no sound). Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a long rest.

- Cost: 2 Magic Points (drawn from the item or the user) and 1 Sanity Point.
- Casting Time: 1 combat round.
- Mechanic: The investigator shakes the pendant while making a Luck roll. A Regular Success provides a distinct gut feeling or omen regarding a declared choice (e.g., whether to enter a warehouse or trust an NPC: “Favorable,” “Disastrous,” or “Veiled”). An Extreme Success or Critical gives a fleeting mental photograph of the specific danger awaiting behind the threshold. A Fumble results in temporary sensory blindness for 1D4 rounds as the silent brass bell tolls deafeningly in the investigator’s mind.
- Eshu’s Skeleton Key:
- Cost: 3 Magic Points.
- Casting Time: 1 full minute of quiet incantation.
- Mechanic: The user touches the shells to a mechanical lock, bolt, or latch. The user’s internal vision displays the mechanical layout of the lock, granting an immediate +20% bonus (or one Bonus Die) to an upcoming Locksmith or Mechanical Repair roll to pick or dismantle the device.

If the investigator succeeds on an Art/Craft, Occult, or POW roll, the surface reflects a silent visual image of a known person or structure within a 3-mile radius for up to 1 minute. If the target possesses high magical power (POW 75 or higher), they make an immediate POW roll; on a success, they sense they are being watched and may catch a psychic glimpse of the scryer.
Blades in the Dark
The Red-and-Black Rosary (Ghost-Eye Talisman) Arcane Implement, 1 Load

- Outcome: You rattle the cowrie shells and petition the spirits of the crossroads for guidance. On a 1-3, you receive a confusing or grim omen, suffering Level 1 Harm (“Spooked/Dazed”) from mental psychic static. On a 4/5, the spirits show you the safest or most advantageous way through an immediate danger, but take a complication (an eerie smell of tobacco alerts nearby guards, or an ethereal bell-chime echoes in the ghost field). On a 6, you gain clear, reliable insight into an immediate obstacle, granting +1d to the next action roll made by you or an ally acting on the vision. On a Critical, you also gain +1 Effect on that action.
- Slip the Tumblers:
- Cost: 1 Stress.
- Action: Tinker or Finesse.

- The Basin Scry:
- Cost: 2 Stress.
- Action: Ritual (Attune). Requires an action roll, a basin of liquid, and an offering of spirits or fine oil.
- Outcome: Provides a brief glimpse of a designated target within the district. Tier rating determines the clarity of the vision; a lower roll or high-tier target introduces ghost-field reverberations that track back to your current hideout.

A failure by an Effect of -4 or worse gives false data and disorients the user with DM-1 on all mental tasks for 1D6 minutes.
- Internal Mechanism Strobe:
- Time: 1 minute
- Mechanics: Touching the housing to a mechanical lock, bolt, or bulkhead handle projects a narrow ultraviolet wave that maps the mechanical interior. The traveler gains DM+2 on their next Mechanic check or Lockpick attempt against that specific mechanism.
- Fluid Basin Reflection:
- Time: 5 minutes
- Mechanics: Submerging the artifact in water infused with alcohol creates an optical focal field across the water’s surface, revealing a silent, visual-only relay of an exterior structure or known target up to 3 kilometers away for 1 minute.

The Ward-Beads of the Shrouded Crossways Enchanted Talisman / Minor Arcane Bauble
- Item Profile:
- Item Type: Neck-worn Talisman / Minor Ward
- Availability: Rare
- Encumbrance: 0
- Description: A necklace strung upon tough river-reed cord bearing twenty-one carved clay beads lacquered in red, black, and bone-white glazes. Suspended from the center are three thick saltwater cowrie shells, a tongue-less hammered brass shrine bell, and an amethyst warp-focus stone. It carries an aroma of sweet cured pipeweed, strong sugarcane brandy, and salty ocean surf.
- Passive Traits:
- Portents at the Threshold: When moving through arched gates, dungeon doorways, or deep-ruin intersections, the wearer gains a +10% bonus on all Perception Tests made to detect hidden pit traps, ambushing adversaries, secret panels, or concealed cult sigils.
- Blessing of the Gate: The silent bell deflects reactive blades aimed at the wearer’s neck or torso. The wearer gains a +1 bonus to their Armor Points on the Head and Body locations exclusively against Free Attacks or Opportunity Attacks triggered by the wearer’s movement across a doorway or threshold.
- Active Abilities:
- Casting the Bones of Fate:
- Action: Half Action / Action
- Test: Challenging (+0%) Channelling or Perception Test
- Mechanics: The wearer shakes the three shells and breathes a short litany to the keepers of crossroads. On a Success, the bearer receives an immediate gut omen regarding a declared action within the next few moments. This grants a +10% bonus (plus an additional +10% for every 2 SL achieved) to the next Test made to follow that path or bypass the foretold obstacle. On a Fumble (rolling 96–100), the clapperless bell emits a mind-shattering brass dissonance, inflicting the Deafened and Stunned conditions on the wearer for 1 Round.
- Eshu’s Gaze:
- Action: Full Action (Requires 1 full minute of quiet chanting while touching the bell to a locking iron bolt, heavy padlock, or portcullis latch)
- Mechanics: The amethyst crystal shines with cold ultraviolet illumination, projecting the inner pins, tumblers, and iron levers through the casing. The bearer gains a +20% bonus to their next Pick Lock Test made against that mechanism.
- Scrying of the Clear Puddle:
- Action: Extended Action (Requires 10 minutes, a bowl or puddle of clean water, and an offering of spirits or pipeweed ash)
- Test: Difficult (-10%) Channelling Test
- Mechanics: The surface of the puddle grows mirror-smooth and displays a silent, moving visual image of a known person or structure within 1 mile per 2 SL achieved (maximum 3 miles). The vision lasts for 1 minute before dissolving into murky liquid.
