Sakha 716 of the Upper Sky Chroniclers Birch Bark Scroll Case

Lore: In the cosmography of Saṃsāra, the oloyons divide existence into three tiered domains: the Under-Earth of creeping cold, the Middle-Earth of living folk, and the Upper-Sky where the benevolent white creator spirits (Aiyy) keep the records of the world’s first dawn. While ordinary mortals gaze upward and see only drifting snow and pale blue void, the shamans know that true divine knowledge is carried on the high, frigid winds that graze the crown of the World Tree. Sakha 716 was crafted during a season when the solar disk turned silver and the northern elders forgot the sacred lineage chants of their ancestors. An apprentice oloyon journeyed to the spirit world upon the rhythmic beating of a larch-frame drum, petitioning the sky scribes for a vessel that could catch falling fragments of cosmic memory. By sewing layers of winter-harvested paper birch with horsehair cord and lining the cylinder with copper-leaf beaten so thin it vibrates to sacred speech, the shaman fashioned a receptacle that preserves forgotten truths and whispers divine revelation directly into the mind of the seeker.

Description: Sakha 716 is a slender, cylindrical scroll-case measuring fourteen inches in length and three inches across. The outer body is rolled from heavy, cream-colored birch bark harvested in deep winter, naturally patterned with dark, horizontal lenticels and etched with geometric ladder motifs that represent an oloyon’s ascent through the nine layers of the Upper-Sky. The cap and base are carved from dense larch heartwood, charred lightly with holy hearth embers and fitted with hammered red copper rings. A continuous seam of double-braided white horsehair binds the bark, terminated by three small copper bells shaped like crane beaks that chime softly when the container is unsealed. The interior chamber is lined with beaten copper leaf washed in silver birch oil. When uncapped, the interior does not reveal hollow darkness; instead, a faint, cool pale-blue mist curls gently from the opening, smelling faintly of high mountain ozone, dried sage, and melted river ice.

Passive Magics

  • Script of the First Dawning: While carrying or holding the case, the wielder gains the ability to decipher ancient, faded, water-damaged, or archaic scripts as if they were written in the avatar’s native tongue, gaining a +1 bonus to all Intelligence, Lore, and History checks made to comprehend holy texts or lost genealogies.
  • Resonant Memory of the Aiyy: The interior of the case is metaphysically insulated from spiritual corruption, dampness, and normal fire; any document, map, parchment, or rubbing placed within it cannot rot, burn, or fade, and is immune to non-magical scrying or tracking.
  • Whispering Canopy: The avatar’s passive awareness of divine or spirit activity is heightened; whenever an avatar approaches within 30 feet of a consecrated altar, an ancient burial cairn, or an area steeped in religious history, the crane-beak bells emit a faint, sympathetic chime audible only to the wearer.

Activable Magics

  • Recall the Ancestor’s Verse: As an action, the wielder uncaps the case, taps the copper base three times, and hums a rising oloyon chant. The pale mist inside the cylinder billows into the user’s face, whispering forgotten trivia, theological context, or historical lineage concerning an object, symbol, or religious site currently observed. This grants the wielder advantage or a +2 circumstance bonus on their next Religion, Arcana, or Occult roll made within the next 10 minutes. Usable twice per day.
  • Breath of the Sky Scribe: As an action, the wielder pulls an empty parchment from the case and blows across the crane-beak bells. Faint frost-blue ink seeps across the paper, automatically transcribing the spoken words of all entities within 20 feet for up to 10 minutes, accurately recording archaic or forgotten dialects phonetically. Usable once per day.
  • Flash of the White Horizon: As a reaction when an avatar or an adjacent ally is targeted by an attack, illusion, or spell originating from an unseen or disguised creature within 30 feet, the wielder snaps the cap open toward the foe. A burst of sharp, cold wind and glowing white crane feathers erupts from the opening, shedding radiant light that cancels the attacker’s visual concealment or reveals the true nature of their disguise for 1 round. Usable once per day.

Commercial Trade and Acquisition of Sakha 716 of the Upper-Sky Chronicler’s Birch-Bark Scroll-Case

  • Sacred Clan Encampments and Oloyon Shrines: Found in alpine larch groves, high tundra gathering pastures, and seasonal nomadic clan encampments where tribal elders, singers, and practicing oloyons gather to recount oral genealogies. The shamans treat the case as a holy reliquary consecrated to the sky spirits (Aiyy) rather than mundane merchant stock. Avatars of good reputation or recognized spiritual standing can obtain the scroll-case for the standard baseline price of 35 silver, frequently settled through traditional barter such as clean bundles of dried sweetgrass, seasoned larch-heart boards, or hanks of virgin white mare’s hair. Selling an authentic scroll-case to a clan elder yields 28 silver, with the understanding that the artifact will be used to train young tribe chroniclers.
  • Monastic Scriptoriums and Cathedral Archives: Situated inside fortified cliffside monasteries, scholastic abbeys, and grand ecclesiastical libraries in major provincial capitals. Monks and academic archivists prize the cylinder for its ability to preserve ancient illuminated manuscripts against fire, water rot, and the moldering damp of cold cloisters. Scriptorium bailiffs sell surplus consecrated cases to traveling scholars for 38 to 44 silver, payable by official World Bank ledger crystal debits. An avatar selling the case to a library assessor receives 27 to 29 silver, provided the copper-leaf interior lining remains uncorroded and free of grease.
  • Antiquarian Bookbinderies and Esoteric Curio Shops: Tucked into university quarter lanes, guild scholar districts, and historic river-port alleys where translators, rare map dealers, and collectors of pre-cataclysm texts congregate. The proprietors recognize the item’s historical linguistic value and display it under glass alongside ancient stone seals and rare pigments. In these refined shops, the retail price ranges from 45 to 55 silver. If an avatar seeks to sell the scroll-case here, the antiquarian offers between 26 and 30 silver after testing the resonance of the crane-beak bells against a bronze tuning fork.
  • Covert Information Dens and Smuggler Scribe Havens: Located in subterranean under-cities, covert spy safehouses, and hidden courier exchanges where diplomats, shadow brokers, and illicit agents trade sensitive imperial treaties or decoded ciphers. The operators here covet the case for its Resonant Memory and Breath of the Sky Scribe properties, which shield vital state papers from divinatory scrying and allow discreet, hands-free transcription of negotiations. Transactions are conducted strictly off-ledger in physical coin or bullion; buying the item from a shadow archivist costs a premium of 55 to 65 physical silver. When offloading the cylinder to a covert fence, the avatar receives 22 to 25 physical silver, provided the horsehair stitching and cap seals show no physical tampering.

Tactical and Environmental Roleplay of the Upper-Sky Chronicler’s Birch-Bark Scroll-Case Across Varied Terrains

  • Ancient Temple Ruins and Consecrated Catacombs: Deep inside forgotten mountain basilicas, crumbling spirit shrines, and burial cairns carved into permafrost cliffs, long-lost liturgies hold the keys to survival. Defensively, the avatar relies on the Whispering Canopy passive to explore safely; as the party approaches unhallowed ground, trapped reliquaries, or ancient crypts protected by divine wards, the faint chime of the crane-beak bells warns the wielder before anyone triggers a sacred ward. If an undead guardian or vengeful temple revenant lunges from a shadowed alcove, the wielder triggers the Flash of the White Horizon reaction, snapping the cap open to unleash a blast of glacial wind and radiant white feathers that strips away the phantom’s concealment and halts its initial momentum. On the offense, when faced with massive bronze vault doors sealed by archaic liturgical inscriptions, the avatar uncaps the cylinder to activate Recall the Ancestor’s Verse. As the pale-blue mist curls over the carvings, ancestral whispers fill the user’s mind with the forgotten prayer sequence and theological passwords, bypassing complex locking mechanisms and granting immediate access to sealed reliquaries.
  • Subterranean Archives and Inundated Scriptoriums: Within damp, flooded cellars beneath flooded cities, leaky sewer vaults, or collapsed libraries where priceless knowledge decays in stagnant moisture, ordinary books crumble into pulp. In defense, the Resonant Memory of the Aiyy passive ensures that salvaged battle orders, fragile treaties, and decrypted ciphers sealed inside the case remain completely dry, immune to rot, mold, and even stray alchemical fires or sewer methane blasts during violent skirmishes. Offensively, when clearing out a nest of cloaked infiltrators or shadow cultists lurking among mildewed bookstacks, the wielder uses the Flash of the White Horizon to shatter an enemy spellcaster’s Invisibility or mirror-glamour, instantly illuminating the target in brilliant white light and exposing their exact position to the party’s ranged combatants.
  • Tense Diplomatic Councils and Treaty Pavilions: Inside wind-whipped silk yurts, imperial conference halls, and frontier truce tents where competing warlords negotiate borders with veiled threats and false promises, words are deadlier than blades. Defensively, when rival delegates speak in obscure aristocratic dialects, dead court languages, or deliberate double-talk to obscure sinister treaty stipulations, the Script of the First Dawning allows the avatar to read fine-print parchment provisions effortlessly, instantly flagging hidden taxation clauses, legal snares, or broken oaths. Offensively, during a closed-door dispute where opposing envoys plan a covert betrayal, the avatar uncaps the case slightly and uses Breath of the Sky Scribe. As faint frost-blue ink creeps across an empty sheet within the cylinder, every hushed whisper, conspiratorial mutter, and clandestine order within twenty feet is transcribed word-for-word into permanent, phonetic script, providing undeniable legal proof of treason to turn the political tide of the council.
  • Blizzard-Swept Frontier Tundras and Mountain Passes: Across howling mountain divides where severe whiteouts isolate travelers from civilized aid, the natural environment is hostile and disorienting. Defensively, carrying the case protects sacred trail maps and survival ledgers from moisture saturation and freezing damage, while the soothing resonance of the sky spirits stabilizes the wielder’s mind against supernatural hallucinations and fear effects brought on by mountain wind-demons. Offensively, when pursuing a band of fleeing marauders who attempt to conceal their trail by setting a diversionary forest fire or collapsing a snowy ridge into an ash-and-smoke barrier, the avatar uses Recall the Ancestor’s Verse to commune with the mountain’s regional spirits, receiving sudden historical intuition regarding the forgotten hunter passes, hidden ravines, and narrow ridgelines that allow the party to cut off the enemy’s retreat.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: Uncapping the cylinder causes the beaten copper-leaf lining to flare with a soft, cold-fire luster. A column of luminescent pale-blue vapor curls out into the air, coalescing into floating, crystalline calligraphy and glowing geometric ladder patterns that hover momentarily before drifting upward and dissolving.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers see the wielder lift the dark larch-and-copper cap, releasing an ethereal ribbon of frosty azure mist that casts a cool, silvery glow over the user’s face and hands.
    • Positives: The floating frost-script illuminates dark environments out to fifteen feet without generating heat or casting flickering shadows.
    • Negatives: The radiant blue emission easily alerts sentries or creatures sensitive to spiritual light in darkened ruins.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: The three crane-beak bells chime with a high, crystalline ring that resonates directly behind the ear canals, expanding into a layered chorus of distant oloyon singers chanting genealogical verses in three-part harmony.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders hear a clear, delicate chime like silver bells struck against river-ice, followed by a faint whistling draft akin to wind blowing across the mouth of an empty ceramic jar.
    • Positives: The harmonic chimes drown out distracting background noise and steady the wielder’s pulse for delicate recitation.
    • Negatives: The distinctive bell tone carries through quiet stone vaults and narrow corridors, compromising acoustic stealth.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: A refreshing, tingling chill spreads through the fingers holding the birch-bark tube and horsehair lacing, resembling the crisp plunge of bare hands into high-altitude glacial meltwater.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within arm’s reach feels a distinct drop in ambient temperature, accompanied by a cool, clean breeze radiating from the open cylinder.
    • Positives: Shuts down fever, combats the grogginess of heat exhaustion, and calms trembling hands during high-stress negotiations.
    • Negatives: In freezing sub-zero environments, the sudden chill can cause brief numbness in exposed fingertips if gloves are removed.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: A pure, sharp inhalation of high mountain ozone, crushed sweetgrass, wild dried sage, and clean springtime river ice washes away all nasal congestion.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Surrounding individuals detect a brisk, airy aroma reminiscent of a pine ridge after a thunderstorm, completely masking the stagnant musk of subterranean dust.
    • Positives: Neutralizes environmental stenches, nauseating burial rot, and airborne sulfur odors.
    • Negatives: The distinct, sweet alpine scent stands out unnaturally in damp cellars, salt mines, or stagnant bogs, revealing an intruder’s presence by scent.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: A crisp, mineral coolness coats the tongue, tasting like fresh mountain rainwater filtered through crushed river-slate, accompanied by a subtle sweet tang of wild silver-birch syrup.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers in immediate proximity notice a momentary dry, mineral sweetness on the air if inhaling deeply.
    • Positives: Moisten a dry mouth instantly, preventing voice cracking during prolonged incantations or speeches.
    • Negatives: Temporarily numbs the back of the palate, dulling taste perception for an hour afterward.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Chronicle Resonator (Ancestral Epiphany):
      • User’s Perspective: The metaphysical boundaries of the avatar’s conscious memory expand upward into the Upper-Sky. Unknown historical contexts, liturgical names, forgotten dialects, and architectural blueprints regarding nearby structures unfold in the mind like an open scroll.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Magically sensitive onlookers perceive an invisible aura of white crane wings unfurling behind the wielder’s shoulders, accompanied by a sudden weight of solemn spiritual authority.
      • Positives: Grants instant, effortless recall of forgotten religious lore, ancestral bloodlines, and concealed architectural weak points without needing reference books.
      • Negatives: Flooding the mortal mind with vast amounts of ancient sky-lore can trigger a brief, disorienting headache immediately after the link closes.
    • Sanctum Sensor (Divine Chime):
      • User’s Perspective: A spatial awareness radar awakens within the wielder’s inner ear; nearby consecrated grounds, cursed burial mounds, hidden altars, or holy relics within thirty feet register as directional, melodic pulses of varying pitch.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Clerics, spirits, and divine entities feel a subtle prickling across their skin, recognizing that their sacred presence has been acknowledged by a conduit of the Aiyy.
      • Positives: Pinpoints hidden religious artifacts, secret shrine doors, and unhallowed ground without triggering mundane physical tripwires.
      • Negatives: Passing through a densely consecrated necropolis or massive cathedral can overwhelm the senses with a chaotic clamor of overlapping spiritual signals.

Crafting Recipe: Upper-Sky Chronicler’s Birch-Bark Scroll-Case

Materials Needed

  • One prime sheet of thick, winter-harvested paper birch bark (sixteen inches wide by ten inches high), stripped of rough lichen
  • One billet of seasoned larch heartwood (four inches diameter, six inches long), free of knots and rot
  • One Tier 1 magic crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted), charged with divine knowledge, memory, or language mana
  • Two sheets of beaten red copper leaf (fourteen inches by eight inches total)
  • Two ounces of hand-hammered red copper sheet for the reinforcement bands and bells
  • Twelve feet of double-braided white winter mare’s horsehair cord
  • Two vials (six ounces total) of living silver birch sap drawn with a fluid collector
  • Two ounces of rendered larch resin and mutton tallow for waterproofing seams
  • One sacrificial consumable or minor focus carrying a knowledge, transcription, or language-comprehension property (such as a Scroll of Comprehend Languages, a Tome of Ancient Genealogies, or an Elixir of Mnemonic Recall)
  • One thimbleful of powdered river shale and dried sage dust

Tools Required

  • Fine woodturning lathe, gouges, and hand-scrapers for hollow-carving larch wood
  • Leatherworking and bark awls, bodkins, and sinew needles
  • Jeweler’s chasing hammer, planishing stake, and shears
  • Manual pin vise drill with micro-bits
  • Manual fluid collector fitted with a draw cannula
  • Small earthenware steaming box and charcoal-heated brazier

Skill Requirements

  • Woodworking / Barkcraft: Minimum Skill Level 4 (trained)
  • Arcane Coppersmithing / Metascribe: Minimum Skill Level 4 (trained)
  • Upper-Sky Lore / Spiritcraft: At least 1 rank in Religion, History, or Shamanic Lore to properly scribe the nine-tier ascent ladders and attune the crane-beak chimes

Crafting Steps

  • Step 1: Steaming and Tempering the Birch Bark: Place the winter birch bark into the steaming box with living silver birch sap and river water for three hours until pliable. While warm, scrape the inner orange cambium layer smooth with a bone draw-tool, leaving only the dense cream-colored bark face. Let it dry under weight to set a gentle cylindrical curve.
  • Step 2: Lathe-Turning the Larch End-Caps: Turn the larch heartwood billet on the lathe to form the friction-fit cap and the solid base plug. Hollow the interior of the cap to receive a seated metal liner. Lightly char the outer surfaces of both wood pieces with sacred hearth embers to lock out rot and insects.
  • Step 3: Interior Copper-Lining and Crystal Embedding: Chisel a snug, round recess into the upper face of the wooden base plug. Seat the Tier 1 magic crystal into this socket, embedding it with heated pine resin and shale dust. Line the entire interior face of the birch bark with beaten copper leaf, burnishing it down with living birch sap to bond the foil directly to the bark interior. File fine hair-width conduits from the crystal seat upward across the copper foil to channel ambient mana into the cylinder.
  • Step 4: Bark Seaming and Sacred Etching: Roll the lined birch bark into a tight, fourteen-inch-long cylinder. Using a hardened bone awl, punch paired lacing holes along the overlapping seam. Stitch the seam closed using the braided white horsehair cord in a double-cross pattern, sealing the exterior edge with melted larch resin. Lightly etch the nine-tiered ladders of the Upper-Sky into the exterior bark, rubbing dried sage and bone ash into the grooves.
  • Step 5: Copper Bands and Crane-Beak Bells: Shape the hand-hammered copper strips into two fitted bands: one securing the wooden base to the birch tube, and one reinforcing the outer rim of the larch cap. Using the planishing stake, fold and hammer three miniature hollow copper bells in the likeness of long-billed cranes. Drill small hanging loops on the cap collar and suspend the bells with twisted horsehair cord so they swing and strike the copper band when handled.
  • Step 6: Sacrificial Transference and Sky-Scribe Rite: Assemble the scroll-case and place it upright on the brazier trivet, leaving the cap removed. Burn the sacrificial consumable (the comprehension scroll or memory elixir) upon the glowing larch coals. As the aromatic white ash rises, speak an oloyon welcoming chant to the Aiyy into the open mouth of the case, ringing the three crane-beak bells in a rising tritone cadence. Maintain the chant until a pale, cold-blue mist pools inside the copper lining, smelling of high mountain ozone and dried sage, sealing the vessel for spirit-archive attunement.

716 Rolled-Skin-of-Birch-Tree That Swallows Words of Upper-Sky and Forgetting of Nine Clans

In the first making of the flat ground, when the water was still hot and the great sun-wheel had only three copper spokes, the two-legged walkers dwelt beneath the shadow of the White Ribs. At that season, they were very raw, possessing Tier-One breath, wearing coats of untanned goat-skin, and carrying no marks upon flat stones. In those days, the benevolent winged-ones—whom the tongue of the dry-land calls the Aiyy, or the Scribes of the White Sky—flew downward every thirty snowfalls. They sat upon the top bough of the Great Mother Tree of Larch-Wood. They spoke with voices like copper basins being beaten with river-slate, telling the two-legged folk the names of their grandfathers, the medicines of yellow roots, the forbidden hollows where the earth-demons sleep, and the holy signs that hold back the sky-vault from falling down upon the grass.

Now, among the yurt-dwellers of the high plateau, there sat nine proud khans. These khans were very heavy with fat, possessing large copper kettles and many three-year-old mares. Each khan said in his liver: “My own head is a great iron chest. Why should I make marks upon skin or listen to the old songs? The words of the winged sky-singers are easy like dry grass; I will hold them inside my belly, and my sons will be kings forever without bowing to the singers of the drum.”

So it came to pass that the khans drove away the singers of bone and the dream-walkers. They said: “A man who beats a drum is only a maker of noise; he eats fat sheep and gives no milk.”

Only one small servant of the hearth, whose tally-mark upon the census-skin was Seven Scratches, One Notch, and Six Holes—whom the bad translation of the river-scribes calls Seven-One-Six-Boy—did not boast with his liver. He was not a striker of horses. He had no coat of wolf-skin, only a small tunic sewn from the belly-scraps of river-beavers. He sat by the smoke-hole of the council-yurt, tending the coals of larch-wood and cleaning the copper basins.

Then came the terrible Month of the Black Throat.

A great worm of black frost crept out from the cracks of the Under-Earth. It did not bite the flesh with teeth; it blew an invisible gray fog into the ears of all men who were sleeping. When the sun Helios rose upon the frost-grass, a great silence fell upon the nine valleys.

The first khan stood up, but when he opened his lips, he had forgotten the name of his own mother. The second khan looked upon his horses, but he had forgotten the whistling-word that makes a stallion stand still; the horses bit his shoulders and ran into the mountain. The third khan looked upon the gray clouds, but he had forgotten the month of the seed-scattering; he cast his barley upon the black ice, and the crows ate his bread. The fourth khan had a book of dry skin, but the black-fog worm had crawled across the pages, and the signs had melted away like grease upon a hot stone.

The nine clans gathered in the Great Circle of Stones. They wept until their eyes were swollen like boiled plums. They said: “We have become like blind dogs in a burnt forest! We do not know who is brother and who is enemy. We do not know what grass cures the belly-pain, and we do not know the path to the sweet water. The sky has turned its back, and the earth will eat our bones!”

Then Seven-One-Six-Boy saw that the great sun-wheel was growing thin, and the sky-vault was sagging toward the dirt because no man remembered the seven holy words that hold up the clouds.

He took his skinning-knife of green jade. He went out into the frozen woods where the winter had peeled the skin of the paper-birch trees. He cut a wide, clean sheet of winter-skin, white like milk, carrying the dark eye-marks of the wood-spirits. He went to the dead hearth of the old banished oloyon and gathered three pieces of heart-larch that had been kissed by holy lightning.

He sat upon his knees upon the river-ice. He did not eat; he did not sleep for three cycles of the moon. With his little bone awl, he etched upon the rolled skin of the birch the nine ladders that lead up into the sky-tent. Across the belly of the bark he laced the white hair taken from the tail of a virgin mare, and within the belly of the cylinder he placed a sheet of red copper beaten so thin it trembled whenever a beetle crawled upon the snow. From the lip of the wood-cap he hung three little bells beaten in the shape of long-billed white cranes.

He took his small larch-drum, which was no larger than a woman’s hand, and tapped it with a willow-rod: tok, tok, tok.

He did not shout to the earth. He hummed through his teeth the high, thin crying-song of the white crane that flies through the ninth blue layer of the Upper-Sky.

The ancient scroll says: As he hummed, his breath did not make white frost upon his chin. His breath rose up straight like an arrow of blue smoke. It pierced the gray blanket of the fog-demon. His mind-eye went up the nine ladders of the birch-skin, climbing past the cold clouds, past the realm of the star-foxes, until his soul stood before the Great White Scribe of the Aiyy, who sits upon an anvil of meteorite iron writing the story of the stars with an icicle of blue light.

The Great Scribe looked down with eyes that had no pupils, like two polished pearls. The Scribe said in the language that has no consonants: “Why do you bring an empty skin-pipe into the high chamber, little scraper of ashes?”

Seven-One-Six-Boy knelt upon the floor of cold wind. He held the open birch-case before his forehead. He said: “The two-legged ones on the flat earth are dying of the great forgetting. The proud khans put their thoughts into their own fat livers, and the black worm has eaten their memory. The words of the first sunrise are dead in their mouths. I have brought this vessel of clean bark, bound with horsehair and copper-leaf, so that the speech of the sky may have an earthen womb to dwell in.”

The Great Scribe smiled with a light like the northern dawn. “Because you did not come with an iron sword to demand power, but brought a clean vessel of humble bark to save the names of your grandfathers, the sky shall not be silent.”

The Great Scribe bent his throat and blew a breath of pure, high-mountain ozone into the mouth of the open birch-cylinder.

Inside the case, the red copper leaf began to shiver and hum like a swarm of brass bees. A ribbon of pale, cold-blue mist rolled into the tube, smelling of sweetgrass, high snow, and melted river-slate. Little frost-letters, shaped like bird-tracks and running rivers, wrote themselves across the inner copper skin in deep azure fire. The three crane-beak bells chimed together: ting, ting, ting, with a note so pure that the black-fog worm in the lower valleys shriveled into black water and died.

Seven-One-Six-Boy fell back down through the nine sky-layers, tumbling like a pinecone in a whirlwind, until he woke upon the snow of the Middle-Earth with the birch-case clutched against his ribs.

He walked into the Great Circle where the nine khans sat shivering in the dirt like sheep before a wolf.

The first khan snarled through his cracked beard: “What does the boy bring? A hollow stick of wood? We are dying of thirst and ignorance, and he brings a toy from the willow-swamp!”

Seven-One-Six-Boy did not answer with anger. He stood in the center of the stones. He took the dark larch-cap from the cylinder.

A rush of cold, sweet mountain wind billowed out over the assembly. A pale blue cloud of luminous vapor rose ten feet into the cold air, unfolding into glowing, floating letters that spelled out the true lineages of the nine houses, the names of the seven healing roots hidden beneath the moss, and the holy incantations that bind the ice to the river-bottom.

The avatar pulled an empty sheet of scraped calf-hide from his pouch and held it beneath the mouth of the case. He blew gently across the crane-beak bells. As the bells sang, the spoken words of the dead ancestors began to print themselves upon the hide in frost-blue ink, flowing without a pen, without ink-horn, and without error.

The khans looked upon the glowing letters. The thick fog fell away from their brains like scales from a dried fish. The first khan wept and remembered his mother’s cradle-song; the second khan remembered the word of peace and whistled his horses back from the rocks; the third khan read the signs of the seasons and knew when to turn the black earth.

The nine khans took off their heavy hats of sable-fur and bowed their foreheads down into the dirty snow before the boy. They said: “Take our nine gold kettles! Take the thousand white mares! Sit upon the high carpet of wolf-skins and be the Great Khan of the Nine Rivers!”

Seven-One-Six-Boy shook his head. He closed the larch-cap upon the birch-cylinder. The three crane bells chimed once: clink. The pale blue mist withdrew inside the copper walls.

“A khan rules only the bodies of living men for fifty snowfalls, and then his flesh becomes worm-meat,” the boy said in the rough dialect of the chimney-sweepers. “This case does not belong to a king. It belongs to the memory of the sky. The word that is held only in a man’s proud brain will rot when his skull breaks; but the divine truth that is given to the clean bark and the humble chant will outlive the mountains.”

He took his wooden walking-stick and walked away into the northern larch groves, carrying the scroll-case across his breast-fur. And the old scribes write that whenever a nation forgets its way and wanders into the dark of deceit and pride, the chiming of three copper crane-beaks can be heard upon the cold wind, calling the humble to read the frost-script of the stars.

Moral of the story: Human pride and mortal memory are fragile vessels that easily wither into ignorance and ruin when severed from the sacred origins of truth; but wisdom that is humbly sought, reverently preserved, and recorded without self-glorification remains an eternal light that no darkness or winter can ever erase.
