Lore
- Across the biting frost-wastes of northern Saṃsāra, roads are erased by wind, and the migration trails of caribou shift with the whims of subterranean spirits. An oloyon does not divine the unseen by gazing into polished glass; they listen to how bone speaks when kissed by hearth fire. Sakha 384 was prepared during an unbroken three-day blizzard when a lost wandering clan sat stranded between frozen river bluffs. An elder shaman laid a prepared caribou shoulder blade across the embers, chanting into the horsehair smoke until the bone cracked along lines that mirrored the hidden passes through the mountains. By binding the lingering resonance of ancestral spirit drums and hearth embers into the marrow, the oloyon created a bone focus that reads the fractures of fate, guiding lost travelers away from blizzards, dead ends, and spirit ambushes.
Description
- Sakha 384 is a wide, flat left scapula taken from a wild tundra caribou, bleached bone-white and smoothed by river silt. Its flat blade is etched with microscopic, spiraling constellations, running reindeer tracks, and stylized frost-winds stained with pulverized birch charcoal and dried red alder juice. The ridge of the bone is banded with a thin strip of hand-hammered red copper, held tight by cross-laced sinew. Suspended from three drilled eyelets along the neck of the bone are small charms: a carved larch-wood owl talon, an iron bead beaten from meteorite ore, and a tuft of shed white horsehair. When turned over a heat source or held close to the face, the blackened hairline fissures across the bone face faintly glow with an ember-orange pulse, and the faint scent of roasting marrow and dry peat smoke drifts from the marrow pores.

Passive Magics
- Hearth-Smoke Wayfinder: While holding or wearing the bone openly in wilderness terrain, the wielder cannot become naturally lost; the charred fracture lines on the bone continuously align toward true north and point out the safest game trail or mountain pass within 1 mile.
- Omen of the Cracking Bone: The wielder instinctively senses sudden atmospheric shifts, gaining a +1 bonus to Wisdom, Perception, and Survival checks made to predict weather changes, blizzards, flash floods, or avalanches 4 hours before they occur.
- Soot-Shielded Eye: The wielder’s vision is unimpeded by falling snow, blinding blizzard whiteouts, or billowing woodsmoke, allowing clear sight up to 60 feet in smoke- or snow-obscured terrain.
Activable Magics
- Pyro-Osteomancy Fracture: As an action, the wielder exposes the flat of the bone to open flame, a hot ember, or a lit torch while humming a low oloyon drone. The bone absorbs the heat and emits a sharp crack; the resulting ember-glow along the fissures reveals a cryptic omen, functioning as an Augury or omen reading regarding an action planned within the next 30 minutes (indicating whether the path holds Fortune, Misfortune, or Both). Usable once per long rest.
- Murmur of the Ancestral Steed: As an action, the wielder blows gently across the horsehair tuft and taps the copper band twice. For 10 minutes, the user can detect the presence, direction, and rough numbers of living beasts, humanoids, or wandering spirits within 300 feet, perceived as distant galloping hooves heard only inside the wielder’s mind. Usable twice per day.
- Glimpse of the Traitor’s Shadow: As a reaction when an unseen or hidden creature within 30 feet initiates an ambush or makes an attack roll against the wielder or an adjacent ally, the wielder twists the bone focus to catch the light. A phantom spark of hearth fire flashes in the marrow fissures, instantly outlining the attacker’s silhouette with faint ember embers and denying them the benefits of surprise or concealment for that attack. Usable once per day.

Commercial Trade and Acquisition of Sakha 384 of the Hearth-Smoke Diviner’s Scapula
- Nomadic Encampment Smoke-Tents and Shamanic Yurt Traders: Found nestled within seasonal reindeer gatherings, tundra trailheads, and glacial river crossings where clan oloyons gather to trade ritual supplies. The shamans and clan elders here recognize the piece as an authentic osteomancy implement consecrated to guide wanderers through perilous whiteouts. Avatars can purchase the scapula for the baseline price of 35 silver, frequently settled through practical barter such as cured caribou marrow cakes, bundles of dried sweetgrass, or raw copper wire. When an avatar sells an authentic bone focus to a clan elder, the trader offers 28 silver, viewing the artifact as a sacred tribal tool destined to be passed down to an apprentice seer.
- Frontier Wayfarer Lodges and Caravan Outfitting Posts: Situated at the base of high mountain passes, frontier garrison stockades, and river-barge way-stations where long-distance pathfinders and merchants prepare for treacherous terrain crossings. The factors here value the scapula primarily as an emergency weather prognosticator and route-finding charm. Guides can buy the bone for 38 to 44 silver via standard World Bank ledger crystal debits. When offloading the relic to an outfitter, the clerk pays 26 to 28 silver, cataloging it alongside compasses, snowshoes, and cold-weather survival provisions for upcoming expeditions.
- Academic Reliquaries and Occult Curio Antiquarians: Located in university cities, grand cathedral libraries, and scholarly districts where collectors seek primitive geomantic relics and tribal divination foci. In these quiet, velvet-lined shops, the scapula is preserved behind glass cases as a preserved artifact of northern spirit-craft. Due to historical curiosity and aristocratic interest, the retail price ranges from 45 to 55 silver. An avatar selling the piece to an antiquarian receives approximately 30 silver, provided the red copper binding and soot-stained etchings remain intact and legible under a magnifying lens.
- Shadow Bazaar Fortune-Tellers and Smuggler Haven Seers: Tucked inside dimly lit dockside dens, clandestine gambling parlors, and under-city catacombs where thieves, cutpurses, and deserters seek omens before executing illicit operations. Den operators and back-alley fortune-tellers utilize the bone’s ambush-detecting properties and omen-cracking traits to stay ahead of city watches. Transactions are conducted strictly off-ledger in physical coin; buying the relic here costs a marked-up 55 to 60 physical silver. When selling to a shadow broker, an avatar can expect no more than 20 to 22 physical silver, as fences factor in the illicit risk of handling traceable tribal foci.
Tactical and Environmental Roleplay of the Hearth-Smoke Diviner’s Scapula Across Varied Terrains
- Blizzard-Swept Mountain Passes and Glacial Divides: Among howling gale-force winds, shifting crevasses, and zero-visibility whiteouts, navigation is a matter of life or death. In defense, when a sudden storm descends, the seer relies on the Soot-Shielded Eye to see cleanly through swirling walls of snow up to sixty feet, picking out stable ice bridges and identifying treacherous snowdrifts that would swallow a party whole. The Hearth-Smoke Wayfinder ensures the group never circles back into a freezing dead-end valley, guiding their footing along hidden natural shelters. On the offense, when tracking an enemy foraging band through the drifts, the diviner activates the Murmur of the Ancestral Steed, tuning their senses to the phantom hoofbeats that reveal the exact number and heading of the hostile camp three hundred feet ahead. Armed with this foresight, the party executes a flanking maneuver under the shroud of the squall, catching the frostbitten foes unprepared while their own vision remains totally crippled by the snow.
- Dank Peat Bogs and Miasmic Swamps: Within murky wetlands smothered by rotting vegetation, deceptive sinkholes, and thick, noxious swamp gas, physical sight is severely limited. Defensively, when stalked by stealthy marsh predators or submerged bog ghouls waiting beneath the dark water, the diviner keeps the bone loosely held; as soon as a creature lunges from concealment, the Glimpse of the Traitor’s Shadow reaction flashes ember sparks across the damp air, highlighting the beast’s dripping flank and stripping away its surprise attack. Offensively, before advancing into a contested bog island where bandits are rumored to dwell, the diviner exposes the caribou bone to a lit camp torch to trigger the Pyro-Osteomancy Fracture. The resulting sharp crack and glowing ember fractures warn the party if taking the direct causeway will lead to a disastrous poison-trap ambush or if circling through the reeds promises a clean, advantageous assault.
- Cramped Subterranean Tunnels and Mining Catacombs: Deep within pitch-black caverns, abandoned mineshafts, and unmapped sewer passages where echoes deceive the ear, foreknowledge prevents fatal missteps. In defense, the Omen of the Cracking Bone passive provides an intuitive four-hour warning if a ceiling collapse, flash flood from a breached underground canal, or pockets of deadly marsh gas are settling into the lower corridors, allowing the party to shore up timber supports or divert to higher tunnels in advance. Offensively, when pursuing a cell of contraband smugglers through a labyrinth of forgotten stone drains, the seer utilizes the Murmur of the Ancestral Steed to pierce the deafening echo of rushing sewer water; the rhythmic phantom hoof-drumming isolates the scuttling boots of the fugitives around blind corners, permitting the hunting team to set up a containment perimeter at the exact junction box the smugglers intend to cross.
- Crowded Frontier Stockades and Contested Border Settlements: Inside tense frontier forts, crowded merchant compounds, and rowdy timber outposts where hidden betrayers and political assassins blend with the common populace, deception is thick. Defensively, while negotiating a dubious truce across a tavern fire, the diviner rests the scapula near an open brazier to read the fracture lines; an ill-omened reading tips the party off that their hosts have laced the ale with paralytic draft or hidden archers in the loft. Offensively, if a street brawl or sudden mutiny erupts in the smoky common room, the diviner’s Soot-Shielded Eye cuts cleanly through lantern smoke, overturned oil fires, and blinding ash clouds, allowing the avatar to pinpoint the enemy ringleader crouching behind overturned tables and direct allies to strike before the agitator can slip through the back door.

Perception of Activation:
- Sight:
- User’s Perspective: Holding the flat bone over the flame and humming the oloyon cadence causes the etched reindeer tracks and spiraling constellations to ignite with an ember-orange phosphorescence. The jagged fracture line splits down the center with a bright, furnace-like glow, trailing thin ribbons of pale lilac and coppery smoke that hover and curl into brief pictographic shapes before dissipating.
- Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers see the bone catch the firelight as a vivid, glowing orange seam tears across the bleached caribou scapula. Swirls of faintly luminous violet smoke rise from the marrow pores, momentarily outlining the diviner’s face and hands in an eerie, warm silhouette.
- Positives: Provides immediate visual clarity of the fracture pattern to read the omen, while illuminating the wielder’s immediate surroundings in total darkness.
- Negatives: The sharp ember flash and glowing fracture line can ruin night vision and immediately reveal the user’s position to watchful sentries or lurking predators.
- Hearing:
- User’s Perspective: A sudden, percussive crack like river-ice splitting under a heavy frost resounds through the bone, followed instantly by a rhythmic, phantom horsehair-drum cadence that thrums softly inside the ears, keeping time with the wielder’s heartbeat.
- Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders hear the distinct, dry snap of bone fracturing under heat, accompanied by the gentle chime of the copper band and swinging charms—the wooden owl talon and meteorite iron bead clicking against each other.
- Positives: The drum cadence provides a grounding acoustic focal point that blocks out chaotic battlefield noise and helps maintain concentration.
- Negatives: The loud initial snap carries in enclosed stone corridors, caves, or tense, quiet negotiations.
- Touch:
- User’s Perspective: A soothing, radiating warmth floods through the sinew-wrapped copper rim into the palms and fingers, replacing the sting of freezing wind with the comforting sensation of resting hands above a stone hearth.
- Observer’s Perspective: Anyone brushing against the wielder feels a gentle wave of dry heat rolling off the bone, like the thermal draft rising off a woodstove.
- Positives: Instantly revives frost-numbed fingers, allowing delicate spellcasting or weapon handling in sub-zero conditions.
- Negatives: The bone becomes intensely hot along the fracture line itself, risking superficial burns if gripped improperly across the center.
- Smell:
- User’s Perspective: A rich, savory wave of roasted caribou marrow, charred birch wood, and dried sweetgrass fills the nasal passages, driving out all ambient odors.
- Observer’s Perspective: Those nearby catch a pleasant, nostalgic draft of dry peat hearth smoke and singing bone, smelling like an occupied winter yurt.
- Positives: Overcomes repulsive environmental stenches, nauseating sewer miasmas, and rotting carrion odors.
- Negatives: The scent of roasting fat and bone lingers in stagnant air, easily drawing the attention of hungry carnivores or olfactory-tracking beasts downwind.
- Taste:
- User’s Perspective: A pleasant, rich flavor of melted animal tallow and crisp birch ash coats the palate, triggering salivation and quelling hunger pangs.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers in extreme proximity taste a dry, powdery hint of wood ash drifting on the breeze.
- Positives: Suppresses physical nausea and eases dry throat during frantic chanting.
- Negatives: Leaves a persistent greasy coating in the mouth that can make water or dry travel rations taste stale.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Temporal Ripple Sense (The Shifting Path):
- User’s Perspective: The metaphysical display in the user’s Mind’s Eye reveals a branching, amber-tinted ghost path stretching out from their current position. Crossroads flash with faint intuitive markers—a green glint for open paths, or a cold gray chill indicating ambushes, rockfalls, or dead ends.
- Observer’s Perspective: Intuitive or psionic observers sense a brief, disorienting flutter in local reality, feeling as though the future has momentarily tilted closer to the diviner.
- Positives: Grants definitive, objective insight into the immediate dangers and opportunities of planned routes or decisions.
- Negatives: The visual clutter of multiple hypothetical paths can cause brief spatial vertigo immediately after the vision clears.
- Spirit-Hoof Resonator:
- User’s Perspective: The psychic boundaries of the user’s mind expand outward in an omnidirectional pulse. Living life forces within three hundred feet register as phantom, galloping ghost-steeds whose thundering strides reveal relative distance, pack size, and speed.
- Observer’s Perspective: Mystically attuned entities nearby feel an ethereal breeze sweep past their ankles, as if an invisible herd of wild reindeer dashed silently across the room.
- Positives: Completely bypasses physical barriers, darkness, and mundane stealth, exposing unseen lurkers.
- Negatives: Crowded environments like busy city markets or livestock pens flood the mind with a deafening stampede of phantom hooves, causing sensory overload.
- Temporal Ripple Sense (The Shifting Path):
Crafting Recipe: Hearth-Smoke Diviner’s Scapula
Materials Needed
- One clean, unbroken left shoulder blade (scapula) of a mature wild tundra caribou, dried and bleached by winter river-silt
- One strip of hand-hammered red copper sheet (eight inches long, one inch wide) to bind the bone ridge
- One Tier 1 magic crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted), charged with divination, augury, or pathfinding mana
- Four feet of twisted caribou sinew cord, dressed in rendered mutton tallow
- One hand-carved larch-wood owl talon charm (one inch long, drilled at the base)
- One drilled iron bead hammered from cold meteorite ore
- One tuft of shed white winter horsehair taken from a northern steppe mare
- Two ounces of pulverized birch charcoal blended with concentrated red alder sap for ink pigment
- Two vials (six ounces total) of living spring birch sap drawn using a fluid collector
- One sacrificial consumable or focus carrying a divination or sensory property (such as a Scroll of Augury, an Elixir of True Vision, or an Omen Bone)
- Half an ounce of warm pine pitch and pulverized bone flux
Tools Required
- Fine bone awls, micro-chisels, and hardened engraving gravers
- Small hornburnishing rod and fine river-sand abrasive slurry
- Miniature jewelers planishing hammer and small lead-block anvil
- Manual pin vise drill with fine hardened bits
- Hand fluid collector with extraction needle
- Earthenware hearth brazier with birch peat charcoal, sweetgrass, and dried pine needles
Skill Requirements
- Bonecarving / Scrimshaw: Minimum Skill Level 4 (trained)
- Arcane Coppersmithing / Lapidary: Minimum Skill Level 4 (trained)
- Divination / Spiritcraft: At least 1 rank in Augury, Survival, or Shamanic Lore to properly orient the constellation glyphs and reading fissures
Crafting Steps
- Step 1: Bone Bleaching and Silt Burnishing: Soak the caribou scapula in a lukewarm bath of river water and living birch sap for eight hours to soften surface oils. Using fine river-sand slurry and the horn burnisher, polish both flats of the bone until silky smooth, revealing the clean ivory marrow base. Let the bone dry slowly in cold shade to prevent premature hairline warping.
- Step 2: Micro-Chasing the Constellations and Paths: Using fine gravers and bone awls, score microscopic spiral paths, reindeer migration tracks, and seasonal constellations across the flat blade of the scapula. Mix the pulverized birch charcoal with red alder sap into a thick, permanent ink. Rub the pigment deep into the scored grooves, wiping the raised bone clean so the dark soot lines contrast sharply against the pale bone.
- Step 3: Shaping and Seating the Copper Spine Band: Hammer the red copper strip over the lead anvil, curving it to fit snugly over the dorsal ridge of the scapula. Chisel a small recessed pocket into the inner face of the copper band to seat the Tier 1 magic crystal flush against the bone margin. Secure the crystal using heated pine pitch and powdered bone flux. Drill matching pairs of lacing eyelets along the lower edges of the copper plate and through the adjacent edge of the bone.
- Step 4: Cross-Lacing the Ridge: Warm the tallow-dressed caribou sinew until supple. Thread the sinew through the drilled eyelets, cross-lacing the copper band and seated crystal firmly to the bone spine. As the sinew cools and dries, it shrinks taut, locking the metal, crystal, and bone into a singular, vibrationally unified conduit.
- Step 5: Eyelets, Charms, and Pendant Rigging: Drill three small hanging eyelets along the neck collar of the scapula below the copper binding. Twist short loops of copper wire and caribou sinew through the holes. Suspend the carved larch-wood owl talon from the left loop, the meteorite iron bead from the center loop, and the bound tuft of white mare hair from the right loop, crimping each tight so they chime softly when moved.
- Step 6: Sacrificial Transference and Hearth-Crack Rite: Hold the assembled scapula flat above the earthenware hearth brazier stoked with birch coals, pine needles, and sweetgrass. Sprinkle the sacrificial consumable (the augury scroll ash or vision elixir) directly over the coals. As the violet-tinted woodsmoke wraps around the ivory blade, chant the three-tone oloyon cadence of the hearth spirit while lightly touching the center of the bone with a heated iron stylus. Maintain the drone until the marrow core emits a sharp, hollow crack and the central fracture glows with a deep, permanent ember-orange hue, binding the divining spirits and sealing the focus for attunement.
384 Shoulder-Bone-That-Listens-To-Fire and Wandering-Tent-Camp of Frost-Blind Valley
In the old turn of cycles, when the big world had only three seasons and the moon was fat like a dried cheese, the sleep-walkers had just fallen through the holes of the great sky-net. They were very small, having only Tier-One marrow and two skin-tunics, knowing nothing of how iron is drawn out of red mud. The frost was an angry beast with five jaws that ate the fingers of little children and made the old mothers drop down into the snow-moss to sleep forever.
In that dry and bitter time, in the camp of the Reindeer-Followers, lived an unranked singer of bone whose tally-stick bore only Three Dots, Eight Lines, and Four Scratches. The stone-scribes who sat inside the clay temples of the lower rivers wrote this name down only as Three-Eight-Four-Man. He was not a great striker of bears; his shoulders were narrow like an axe-handle, and he had no silver cup to drink mare-milk from. He had only an old scraper of gray schist, a fire-horn made of hollow musk-ox horn, and the dried left shoulder-blade of an ancient wild buck that had died of winter upon the gravel-bank.
Now, it happened in the month of the Short-Sun that the sky-father blew an evil breath from his nostril. A great snow-demon, whose hair was made of whirling ice-dust, sat down upon the throat of the northern pass. For seven days and seven nights the wind did not stop whistling through the yurt-timbers. The white dust rose up until a man could not see his own knuckles though he held them against his nose. The sky and the snow were the same gray belly, and the trails where the caribou walked became flat like a scraped drum-head.
The food-pots of the clan were empty. The mothers had boiled their shoe-leathers twice, and the little children wept into their hair, crying out that the frost-fox was gnawing their ribs.
The big trackers of the clan—who had five-foot bows of laminated horn and coats sewn from six wolf-skins—rose up in anger. They were very proud, having many hit-points and loud chests. They shouted: “A man who has two eyes and a bow does not sit in a tent like a sick puppy! We will go out into the white dust. We will follow the smell of the pine trees and strike the bull-caribou in his bedding-ground, and our children will have fat upon their lips before the darkness eats the sky!”
The proud hunters walked out into the white storm. But the wind had no tracks, and the ice had no shadows. Their eyes grew red and swollen with snow-blindness; their ears were filled with the shrieking of the mountain-harpies until their brains became loose like curdled milk. They walked in seven circles upon the frozen lake. One fell through the ice-skin into the black water; two walked over the edge of the blue-slate precipice and were broken upon the rocks below; the others crawled back on their knees, with black, dead toes and empty game-bags, weeping that the world was dead and the gods had shut their eyes.
Then the clan-elder, whose beard was yellow with birch-smoke, bowed his head. “We must lie down under our furs and let the white dust cover our mouths,” he said. “For no man can see through the blanket of the sky-demon, and the mountain has closed its jaws.”
Three-Eight-Four-Man sat by the dying hearth. The fire had only three red coals left, and the yurt-timbers shivered like a horse in deep water. He looked upon his sister’s little boy, whose breath was very thin, like the steam that rises from fresh dung on a frosty morning.
He did not take up a bow, nor did he sharpen a spear of iron. He took from his bag the flat shoulder-bone of the caribou, which he had polished with the gray silt of the salt-river. Along its blade he had scratched the little spiral marks of the wind-stars and the small prints of the deer with the soot of burned birch-twigs. Across its hard ridge he had bound a red copper band, and from its neck hung the carved larch-owl and the bead of dark iron that had fallen from the star-sack.
He knelt upon the frozen floor. He placed the flat bone directly upon the two remaining red coals of the hearth-fire. He did not speak with a loud, shouting tongue; he hummed through his nose the three-note droning song of the river-oloyon, tapping the rim of the hearth with his bone awl in the beat of a mare’s heart: thump, thump, thump.
The ancient scroll says: As the caribou-bone drank the heat of the red coal, it did not turn into gray ash. The black soot-drawings of the stars began to burn with a slow, furnace-colored fire, like embers seen through a hide tent-door. A ribbon of violet woodsmoke rose up from the marrow-holes, smelling of sweet summer grass and roasted fat, driving away the cold, rotten smell of the frost-corpses outside.
Then came the sound.
From the middle of the bone came a sharp, percussive crack, like the sound of river-slate breaking under the heel of a giant. The blade split down its center into three crooked red lines that glowed like the throat of a smelting furnace.
Three-Eight-Four-Man bent his eyes close to the fracture. He did not look with his outer eyes, which were weak; he looked through the bone-skin with the second sight that the oloyon learns in the dream-world. The glowing cracks did not look like broken bone; they looked like the great mountain-cleft of the Black Ribs, four leagues to the east. Inside the glowing fissure he saw three phantom pines that had been bent by the storm, and behind the pines, sitting in a hollow out of the wind, thirty head of wild caribou were sleeping upon the dry willow-shoots.
He lifted the hot bone by its sinew-wrapped copper plate. His hands did not freeze in the gale. He tied the tuft of white horsehair to his belt, took his scraper, and stood at the yurt-door.
“Rise up, you who have breath left,” he said to the trembling people. “The fire has spoken through the bone. The mountain has not closed its jaws; it has only hidden its tongue behind the white veil.”
The proud hunters who had lost their toes laughed through their swollen lips. “You are an unranked scraper of skins! How will a dried cow-bone lead a man where six-foot bows could not go?”
“A bow speaks only to the meat,” Three-Eight-Four-Man answered in the rough dialect of the peat-hollows. “The bone speaks to the path.”
He stepped out into the howling storm. The white dust leaped into his eyes, but beneath the bone-collar of his hood, his sight was clear. The falling snow and the thick grey frost did not blind him; to his eyes, the blizzard was only a thin curtain of gray gauze, and through it he saw the glowing amber path that the heated scapula had printed upon the earth.
The remaining folk of the yurt-camp crawled after him in a long, shivering line, holding to a single braided horsehair rope.
They walked through the blind drifts where the wind blew so hard it tore the mittens from their fingers. When they came to the fork of the Frozen Guts, where the old path went to the left, the proud hunters pulled the rope. “To the left!” they shouted. “To the left lies the summer grazing land!”
Three-Eight-Four-Man looked down at the bone in his hand. The central fracture glowed bright red, and inside his skull he heard the phantom sound of a hundred ghost-steeds galloping toward the right gorge. “The left path is a grave,” he said. “The snow has built a false bridge over the black cleft; he who steps there will fall a hundred paces into the tooth of the ice.”
They turned to the right, into the narrow gorge of the Black Ribs. An hour later, a great groan shook the hills behind them—the false bridge on the left path gave way, hurling fifty tons of blue ice down into the darkness where the proud men had wished to go.
The people wept with terror, but Three-Eight-Four-Man walked steadily, humming the three-note drone into the marrow of his jaws.
At the middle of the sixth hour, when the sun Helios had already turned his face away from the tundra, the amber line ended at a cluster of three twisted pines. There, sheltered from the wind in a deep earth-bowl, was the herd of wild deer. The beasts were drowsy with the frost, their heads resting upon their knees.
The hunters did not have to shoot with big bows. They took their flint knives and struck three fat cows, spilling the hot red blood into the white snow. They drank the warm blood from their palms; they cut out the marrow-bones and roasted the fat upon pine-splints, and the little children of the clan laughed as their chins grew shiny with sweet grease.
The clan lived in the deep earth-bowl until the month of the High-Sun broke the back of the frost-demon. When the snows ran away as sweet water into the marshes, the people built a great cairn of river-slate upon the high ridge. They did not place upon the stones a sword of bronze, nor the horn-bow of a king. They placed upon the flat top of the rock the cracked shoulder-bone of the caribou, wrapped in its beaten copper band, with the three charms chiming in the south wind: clack, clack, clack.
And Three-Eight-Four-Man said to the young boys before he lay down to become earth: “Remember the bone that ate the fire. The eye of the meat-hunter is wide, but it sees only what stands before his belly; the bone sees what lies behind the mountain, for it has died once already and does not fear the dark.”
Moral of the story: The arrogant man who relies only on his physical eyes and blunt force will wander blindly into the abyss when the storms of life erase the path; but the patient and humble soul who knows how to listen to the whispers of experience and the ancient omens of the fire can see clearly through the blinding whiteouts of fate, guiding the helpless safely through the jaw of destruction.
