Lore
In the early consolidation periods following the Wilderness Conquest, frontier commanders stationed along the dense timberlands of Badarian struggled to maintain order across overgrown patrol routes. Wild beasts routinely disrupted messenger lines, while encroaching enchanted brambles swallowed cleared military roads overnight. An ambitious field artisan bound fragments of hardened ironwood and compressed vine fibers to a minor crystalline catalyst, seeking to create an authoritative focal piece. The result was a rigid neckpiece that projects an imposing, natural aura of authority. Wearing it allowed unit captains to project their voice through forest canopies and compel wild beasts to halt in their tracks, establishing early garrisons through firm, uncompromising leadership over the wilderness.
Description
The gorget is crafted from dark, petrified ironwood bark that has been smoothed and reinforced along the rim with dark bronze fittings. Interwoven across its front surface are petrified thorned vines that wrap tightly around a coin-sized green crystal nestled into the throat recess. When fastened around the neck and attuned, the bronze fittings glow with a steady, deep amber hue, and the wooden collar constricts comfortably to match the wearer’s neck. Whenever the wearer speaks a direct order, their voice takes on a resonant, earthy cadence that carries the weight of a snapping timber trunk, cutting cleanly through ambient wilderness noise.

Tactical Roleplay, Environmental Applications, and Command Directives of the Sovereign Thicket Gorget
- Dense Old-Growth Forests and Primeval Taiga
- Offensive Tactical Application: The avatar positions at the front of the squad, using the Voice of the Pack Leader passive to intimidate creeping predators and prevent feral beasts from attacking the party. When hunting hostile quarry or confronting enemy scouts, the avatar unleashes Commander’s Halt, projecting a booming timber-crack order that arrests the lead target in its tracks with the stunned condition. The avatar follows this by barking Rally the Cohort, granting allied frontliners temporary hit points and increased movement speed to close the distance and eliminate the immobilized foe.
- Defensive Tactical Application: When an enemy squad initiates an ambush from the tree line, the avatar’s Canopy Resonance ensures spoken tactical commands cut through hundreds of feet of rustling leaves and whistling winds without distortion. The avatar calls out Bramble Barricade Directive, instantly forcing thick ironwood roots and thorned underbrush to surge upward across a 10-foot bottleneck. This creates a fortified position granting +2 AC to squad members taking cover behind the briars while forcing charging beast-riders into difficult terrain.
- Cultivated Farmlands, Plantations, and Estate Boundaries
- Offensive Tactical Application: During field skirmishes across open acreage, the avatar establishes tactical dominance by coordinating allied movement across wide crop expanses. Pointing toward retreating bandits or encroaching raiders, the avatar issues Commander’s Halt to paralyze the enemy leader in place. The avatar then triggers Bramble Barricade Directive along the flanks, causing fence-line brambles and deep crop roots to burst upward, cutting off escape routes and corralling adversaries into the party’s primary kill zone.
- Defensive Tactical Application: While defending agrarian storehouses or village perimeters from monster incursions, the avatar relies on Unyielding Posture to remain firmly anchored against heavy beast charges, resisting displacement from trampling attacks. When the line threatens to buckle, the avatar activates Rally the Cohort, projecting an authoritative shout across the fields that bolsters the resolve of defending militia with temporary hit points and immediate repositioning speed.
- Urban Stone Streets, Market Squares, and Military Courtyards
- Offensive Tactical Application: In dense city environments with minimal exposed greenery, the avatar leverages the gorget’s command presence to establish crowd control and military authority. Confronting lawless guilds or hostile mercenaries in a cobblestone plaza, the avatar uses Commander’s Halt against an advancing melee champion, freezing them under the sheer vocal dominance of the order. The avatar then directs allied avatars using Rally the Cohort, coordinating a rapid, unified charge down the paved street with enhanced speed and bonus buffer hit points.
- Defensive Tactical Application: When cornered in narrow stone alleys or warehouse choke points, the avatar channels mana into the sparse weeds, climbing ivy, or foundation moss breaking through the masonry. Invoking Bramble Barricade Directive causes the urban vegetation to expand aggressively into a dense, thorny breastwork across the alleyway. This obstacle blocks line-of-sight attacks, elevates the party’s defensive AC, and stalls pursuers until city watch reinforcements arrive.
- Subterranean Caverns, Fungal Forests, and Deep Mines
- Offensive Tactical Application: Deep beneath the surface where massive fungal stalks and spreading root networks pierce cavern ceilings, the avatar assumes command over close-quarters skirmishes. When engaging subterranean horrors or cave-dwelling monsters, the avatar barks Commander’s Halt, utilizing the cavern’s acoustic resonance to freeze the lead beast in place. The avatar immediately rallies the vanguard with Rally the Cohort, allowing subterranean fighters to push forward aggressively into the cavern floor.
- Defensive Tactical Application: While navigating hazardous underground ravines or navigating narrow cave bridges, Unyielding Posture keeps the avatar firmly planted against sudden subterranean tremors, shockwaves, or gusting spore vents. If swarms of burrowing creatures attempt to encircle the party, the avatar activates Bramble Barricade Directive on subterranean mycelium and exposed root clusters, erecting a petrified briar wall that seals the tunnel passage and shields vulnerable spellcasters from flanking assaults.
- Coastal Mangroves, Salt Marshes, and Estuary Channels
- Offensive Tactical Application: In waterlogged marshlands where movement is naturally hindered, the avatar directs allied movements along stable mud banks. When engaging amphibious raiders or swamp predators, the avatar uses Commander’s Halt to stun targets wading through open water channels. With the enemy halted, the avatar commands allied combatants to surge forward via Rally the Cohort, granting the temporary resilience and extra movement necessary to cross slick shallows and execute coordinated strikes.
- Defensive Tactical Application: When defending a stranded skiff or marsh outpost against hostile aquatic packs, the avatar targets exposed mangrove roots and dense shoreline reeds with Bramble Barricade Directive. The submerged root network weaves tightly together to create a fortified perimeter barrier above the water line, providing crucial cover against ranged harpoons and imposing difficult terrain on aquatic monsters attempting to clamber ashore.

Perception of Activation:
User’s Perspective
- Sight: A deep, resonant emerald flare ignites from the center of the gorget, casting sharp, branch-like shadow patterns across the avatar’s collarbones and chest. Tiny, floating amber motes pulse outward in rhythmic waves matching the avatar’s heartbeat, slightly sharpening the outline of allies and targeted foes within their forward field of view.
- Sound: The avatar hears a deep, low-frequency hum vibrating directly through their jawbone and throat cartilage, reminiscent of a massive ancient oak groaning under heavy wind. When the avatar speaks, their vocal cords vibrate with an unnatural acoustic resonance, making their words sound double-toned and commanding like snapping timber.
- Touch: A firm, steady constriction takes hold around the neck, feeling like the solid grip of an armored gauntlet that supports the neck without restricting airflow. A heavy, earthy warmth radiates downward into the sternum, sending a grounding sensation down the spine and into the soles of the feet.
- Smell: A rich, heavy scent of petrified resin, charred cedarwood, and rain-drenched peat moss fills the avatar’s nasal cavities, cutting through sulfur, decay, or swamp stench.
- Taste: A dry, astringent flavor of tannic oak bark, bitter sap, and cold river water manifests along the roof of the mouth and the back of the throat.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Pack Command Tether: Through the Mind’s Eye, the avatar perceives thin, taut green lines of metaphysical authority extending from the throat gem directly to the minds of nearby allies and targeted wild beasts.
- Terrestrial Anchoring: An innate sensory perception makes the surrounding ground feel like a responsive extension of the avatar’s own musculoskeletal frame, intuitively measuring terrain stability.
- Aura of Dominance: A heavy psychic pressure expands outward in a sphere from the avatar’s chest, signaling to the subconscious minds of all present that an apex leader is asserting control over the immediate environment.
Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Onlookers see the dark bronze trim of the wooden gorget flare with a harsh, smoldering amber glow while the central crystal bursts with an intense, brilliant emerald radiance. Swirling wisps of green luminescence coil like tight vine tendrils around the wearer’s neck, illuminating their jawline with an imposing, radiant hue.
- Sound: Anyone within hearing range hears a sudden, resonant thud resembling a heavy wooden war-drum, followed by the wearer’s voice booming with extraordinary volume, authority, and acoustic depth that easily cuts through howling winds and battle cries.
- Touch: Creatures standing near the user feel a sudden, dry shockwave of air pressure push against their skin, accompanied by a subtle tremor underfoot as if a heavy weight had just landed upon the topsoil.
- Smell: A distinct waft of old-growth forest humus, crushed pine needles, and warm bronze washes across the area on a brief outward draft.
- Taste: Onlookers who draw a sharp breath catch a faint, powdery tang of dry moss and bitter herbal ash on their tongues.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Conduit Flare: Spellcasters observing with True Sight register an immediate, dense pillar of ultraviolet and primal nature magic surging through the wearer’s neck slot into the local weave.
- Beastial Instinct: Feral animals and charmed pets experience an immediate instinctual shudder down their spines, registering the wearer as a higher-ranking predator within their territory.
Positives
- Unmistakable Leadership Focus: The amplified vocal resonance and glowing throat sigils ensure that commands cannot be missed, misinterpreted, or ignored by party members in chaotic combat environments.
- Morale and Authority Surge: The deep acoustic thrum and commanding aura impose immediate hesitation on charging feral beasts, providing crucial seconds for allies to reposition.
- Clear Spatial Anchoring: The grounding sensory feedback prevents disorientation in shaking environments, allowing the user to maintain firm balance and tactical focus through tremors or heavy winds.
- Atmospheric Dominance: The potent aroma of cedar resin and peat effectively suppresses distracting ambient smells and localized odors on the battlefield.
Negatives
- Voice Camouflage Loss: The booming timber cadence makes whispering or issuing covert tactical orders impossible while the conduit is actively cycling power.
- Prominent Visual Target: The blazing emerald glow and radiant bronze trim draw immediate enemy fire and focus toward the wearer’s exposed throat during low-light or night operations.
- Neck Strain and Astringency: Prolonged or repeated activations leave the avatar with a tight, aching sensation across the neck muscles and a dry, bitter throat that demands immediate hydration after combat.
- Aggressive Challenge Trigger: While lesser beasts hesitate, territorial alpha monsters and proud enemy commanders may perceive the blatant aura of dominance as an active challenge, drawing their heaviest single-target attacks directly toward the wearer.
Recipe: Fabrication of the Sovereign Thicket Gorget
Materials Needed
- 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted nature catalyst)
- 1 Segment of Prime Cured Ironwood Bark (approximately 8 inches long, 4 inches wide, seasoned for hardness)
- 2 Strands of Petrified Blackthorn Brambles (flexible, thorn-studded vine fibers)
- 2 Ounces of Concentrated Heart-Pine Resin (extracted via Fluid Collector)
- 1 Ounce of Alpha Wolf Blood or Dire Boar Gland Ichor (reagent base for command and vocal resonance)
- 1 Strip of Molded Bronze Sheeting and Trim (mundane structural reinforcement)
- 4 Bronze Rivets and Clasps (for secure neck fastening)
Tools Required
- Fluid Collector (fine-gauge needle for harvesting concentrated wood resins and apex predator ichor)
- Wood Carver’s Rasp, Chisel, and Sanding Stones
- Metalworking Anvil, Ball-Peen Hammer, and Bronze Snips
- Crucible and Mortar & Pestle for Alchemical Blending
- Arcane Conduit or Handheld Arcane Battery (to stabilize crystal mana flow)
Skill Requirements
- Nature Crafting / Woodcarving: Skill Level 5 or higher
- Blacksmithing / Armorsmithing: Skill Level 5 or higher
- Magic Weaving / Conduit Inscription: Skill Level 5 or higher
Crafting Steps
- Reagent Compounding: Using the mortar and pestle, blend the concentrated heart-pine resin with the apex predator ichor. Heat the mixture gently in the crucible until it forms a dark, aromatic binding paste that pulses with faint primal energy.
- Shaping the Collar Plate: Steam and shape the seasoned ironwood bark over a curved mandrel until it forms a rigid, ergonomic collar that contours securely around the front and sides of the neck. Carve a recessed, circular socket at the front throat position to house the central catalyst.
- Bronze Reinforcement and Trim: Cut and hammer the bronze sheeting to form protective upper and lower rims around the ironwood plate. Inscribe fine linear conduits along the inner bronze channels to direct mana toward the wearer’s vocal tract, then secure the trim to the wood using the bronze rivets.
- Catalyst Inset and Vine Weaving: Coat the Tier 1 coin-sized nature crystal in the warm alchemical binding paste and press it firmly into the carved throat socket. Weave the petrified blackthorn brambles tightly across the wooden face and around the base of the crystal, securing the vines to the bronze border so they lock the stone permanently into place.
- Attaching Clasps: Fasten the rear bronze clasps and leather ties to the collar’s ends, ensuring an adjustable, firm fit that prevents movement during combat.
- Mana Alignment and Channeling: Place hands over the assembled gorget, channeling natural mana through a focus into the bronze and wooden frame for one full minute. Focus the Mind’s Eye on the central crystal until the bronze edges glow with a steady amber line and the crystal flares with deep emerald light. Roll a d20 to finalize the infusion: on a roll of 2 through 20, the item successfully stabilizes as a Tier 1 Common nature armor piece (on a roll of 1, the crystal shatters into useless shards, destroying the components; on a roll of 20, the gorget gains an additional charge capacity or heightened vocal range).
Strong Wood-Throat and Shouting Captain of Sticks
In the many turns of the sun before the grand measurement of the moon-years, during the early breaking of the untamed tall-growths, there was a land-island where the trees grew too fast and had teeth of great sharpness. The kings of that time sent many walkers with metal poles into the big leaves, telling them to make a path so that wagons with four wheels could roll from the salty water to the stone house in the middle.
Among these path-breakers was a person of much loud breath, whom the clay tablets name the Captain of Thick-Branches, though some scratched stones call him simply the Man Who Refuses to Sit Down. He was placed in charge of forty small-walkers who carried copper axes and dried meat in leather sacks.
Every morning, the big wood-plants would reach out their long green fingers and wrap around the path that had been made the day before. Great hairy four-legged beasts with long tusk-teeth would come running out of the dark bushes, making loud roaring noises that caused the axe-men to drop their tools and climb into high fruit-trees. When the Captain of Thick-Branches opened his mouth-hole to say, “Stand upon your two feet and hit the beasts with your sticks,” his voice was small like a dried bean in a jug. The wind in the leaves was too fat, and the axe-men could only hear their own knees knocking together like small stones in a basket.
The Captain of Thick-Branches became very sick in his liver with anger. He walked to the place where the dirt was deep and brown, taking a hollow needle-prong to pull the sticky juice from the iron-wood tree that does not rot. He captured also the red water from the neck-vein of the biggest wild pack-dog that had died of being too stubborn, and he found a green shining-stone that fell from the belly of a dead mountain-crawler, which had the weight of one small round money-disc.
He sat upon a tree-stump that was covered in biting-ants and worked with great sweat upon his forehead. He hammered flat bronze-metal with a round stone until it formed a tight collar like the thing put upon a bad donkey. He soaked the tough iron-bark in the sticky juice and tied hard thorny vines across the front until the green shining-stone was held tight against where his throat-meat makes loud noises.
When he placed this wooden neck-shield over his neck, the bronze edges grew yellow like the eyes of an owl, and the collar squeezed his neck-bone with the hardness of a stone-trap.
The Captain stood upon a rock that looked out over the wild timber-place and opened his throat. He did not speak with the squeaking breath of a frightened biped; instead, the sound that came forth was like the grand mother-tree splitting in two during a great sky-fire storm.
The forty small-walkers who were hiding in the fruit-trees heard the voice boom through the thick leaves as if the captain were standing inside their own ear-holes. The voice said, “Climb down from the fruit-branches, take up your sharp iron-sticks, and put your heels deep into the mud!”
The men felt their legs become stiff like buried oak-posts. Their hearts grew warm, and they dropped from the branches, standing together in a straight row like the fence-timbers of a king’s yard.
Just then, three giant horned-pigs with long snout-teeth charged out of the deep brambles, their feet making the ground jump like water in a kettle. The Captain of Thick-Branches did not run. He stepped forward onto the loose loam, pointed his hand-finger at the biggest snout-pig, and roared through the wooden collar, “Halt your hooves, bad-mannered root-eaters!”
The green shining-stone at his throat flashed with the light of green fire. The big snout-pig stopped so fast that its back hooves went over its front ears, tumbling into the dirt and freezing like a dry river-rock. The thorny bushes nearby reached up from the soil and tied their prickly arms across the road, making a great prickly wall that the other two pigs could not jump over.
The Captain then shouted to his forty men, “Push the wall forward and clear the trail!”
The men gave a great shout, feeling two extra hit-points of spirit in their chest-boxes and much swiftness in their sandals. They drove the pigs back into the tall fern-places and cleared three leagues of roadway before the great star Helios went down into the dark side of the world.
For many cycles of seasons, the Captain walked the wet frontier with the dark wooden throat-plate locked around his neck. The wild beasts learned that when the wood-throat made its thunder-sound, the trees themselves would stand up to make walls and their own four legs would forget how to run. But the Captain also learned that he could never whisper a sweet secret to his companion in the sleeping-tent, for whenever he tried to say soft words, the bronze trim would glow amber and his mouth would shout like a falling boulder, waking all the dogs in the camp.
Moral of the Story: He who wears the voice of the forest to rule the beasts and rally his brothers will surely conquer the wild road, but he must remember that one cannot govern a quiet heart with the roar of a falling tree.
