Nature 742 of the Gossiping Verdant Brooch

Lore

Crafted during a peculiar botanical festival in the coastal outskirts of the island nation of Banpo, this curious trinket was the brainchild of a novice hedge-herbalist who sought a way to converse with the surrounding flora. Believing that plants held the ancient, solemn secrets of Gaialilith’s primeval soil, the crafter infused a common mineral nodule with the sap of hyper-sensitive woodland creepers. Instead of unearthing profound cosmic wisdom, the crafter inadvertently tuned the brooch into the mundane, unfiltered, and deeply judgmental social chatter of everyday plant life. The brooch quickly made the rounds among traveling wanderers, frequently sold off by exasperated owners whose leafy companions refused to stop criticizing their posture, hygiene, and life choices.

Description

The item manifests as an intricately carved clasp fashioned from dried, compressed mosswood and polished bauxite, bound together by a twining copper wire. At its center sits a small, pale-green seed pod that rhythmically twitches whenever someone speaks nearby. When pinned and attuned, two miniature leafy sprigs sprout from the top edge, occasionally curling or shaking in amusement like tiny animated hands. The brooch emits a faint scent of damp soil and freshly crushed mint, accompanied by a subtle, muffled rustling sound resembling rapid whispering whenever it enters vegetated terrain.

Passives Magic

  • Flora Whispers: The avatar passively perceives the superficial thoughts, moods, and trivial complaints of ordinary non-sentient plants, grass, and shrubs within 15 feet. These plants frequently offer unsolicited, comical commentary regarding how heavy the avatar steps or how dreadful their footwear smells.
  • Sprout’s Warning: Whenever a tiny or small feral beast approaches within 20 feet of the avatar with hostile intent, the brooch vibrates vigorously against the avatar’s chest and produces an audible sneeze, alerting the avatar and preventing the flat-footed condition from surprise encounters initiated by such creatures.
  • Soil Nourishment: If the avatar pins the brooch to their chest while taking their daily 20-minute meal in direct contact with natural soil or loam, the avatar gains 1 additional temporary hit point beyond the normal single hit point granted by the meal.

Activable Magics

  • Tactical Dandelion Puff: As an action, the avatar squeezes the brooch’s central seed pod to release a sudden, expanding cloud of ticklish white spores in a 10-foot cone. Creatures caught in the cloud must make a Difficulty Class 11 saving throw or be afflicted with uncontrollable sneezing, imposing the hindered condition on their next physical action attempted within 1 turn.
  • Root Trip: As an action, the avatar points at an exposed patch of grass, vines, or weeds within a simple range of 30 feet, commanding the foliage to rapidly knot itself into a single tripping snare. The target standing on that space must succeed on a Difficulty Class 11 saving throw or be knocked prone as the weeds mockingly tug at their ankles.
  • Vegetative Heckle: As an action, the avatar channels mana into the brooch, causing all non-magical flora within 25 feet to loudly jeer, rustle, and whistle at a targeted foe. The target suffers a distraction penalty, granting the avatar advantage on their next immediate attempt to escape combat, disengage, or hide among natural terrain within the same turn.

Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Applications of the Gossiping Verdant Brooch

  • Dense Temperate Woodlands and Overgrown Jungles
    • Offensive Tactical Application: The avatar navigates along thick undergrowth, using the brooch’s passive voice to pinpoint where hostile beasts are nesting based on the complaints of trampled ferns. Squeezing the central seed pod during an ambush unleashes the Tactical Dandelion Puff into an enemy forward rank, forcing charging foes into sudden fits of sneezing. The avatar then triggers Root Trip on tangled vine patches beneath the lead assailant, causing the roots to yank their footing out from underbrush cover while the flora loudly mocks their balance.
    • Defensive Tactical Application: When pursued by aggressive predators through the deep brush, the brooch rapidly vibrates and lets out an audible sneeze, instantly alerting the avatar to flanking beasts hiding in the canopy. The avatar invokes Vegetative Heckle, causing the surrounding canopy, weeping vines, and thorn bushes to wildly thrash, whistle, and scream insultingly at the pursuers. This cacophony disorients the beasts’ natural tracking instincts, granting the avatar cover to disengage cleanly into the brush without taking damage.
  • Cultivated Farmlands, Orchards, and Rural Village Perimeters
    • Offensive Tactical Application: While engaging bandit raiders or rogue beasts among crop rows, the avatar coordinates with the surrounding wheat or corn stalks. The avatar points toward an approaching foe, activating Root Trip to cause thick crop roots and squash vines to knot around the target’s ankles. As the enemy falls prone into the dirt, the crops loudly jeer about the intruder crushing their yields, drawing the focus of allied avatars to execute an immediate follow-up strike on the hindered adversary.
    • Defensive Tactical Application: While resting or establishing a perimeter along a rural fence line, the avatar relies on the Sprout’s Warning passive to prevent farm pests or creeping thieves from bypassing the perimeter unnoticed. If an hostile intruder steps onto the property, the avatar taps the brooch to activate Vegetative Heckle, transforming ordinary tomato patches and orchard trees into a shrieking, heckling alarm network that confuses the trespasser while providing tactical evasion windows for defenders.
  • Urban Streets, Alleys, and Masonry Plazas
    • Offensive Tactical Application: In stone-paved cities with minimal greenery, the avatar seeks out small patches of weeds pushing through cobblestones, moss growing on gutters, or potted ornamental plants near tavern entrances. When confronting an urban foe, the avatar activates Root Trip on the sparse dandelion roots beneath the target’s boots, causing even tiny weeds to aggressively latch onto bootlaces and trip the adversary. The avatar follows up with a close-range burst of the Tactical Dandelion Puff, filling the narrow stone alley with tickling spores that disrupt the opponent’s readied attacks.
    • Defensive Tactical Application: Navigating dangerous alleyways at night, the avatar uses the faint Flora Whispers to gather passive warnings from moss clinging to cellar walls, which grumbles about heavy-booted thugs lurking around the upcoming corner. If cornered in a courtyard, the avatar casts Vegetative Heckle onto decorative planter boxes and climbing ivy, causing the manicured shrubs to unleash a barrage of loud rustling and auditory mockery that breaks line-of-sight focus, allowing the avatar to withdraw toward guarded city gates.
  • Subterranean Caverns, Fungal Grottoes, and Sewers
    • Offensive Tactical Application: Deep underground where true flora is absent, the brooch interacts with cave moss, lichen patches, and giant fungal stalks. When facing subterranean monsters, the avatar triggers Tactical Dandelion Puff, mixing the brooch’s floating spores with ambient fungal dust to blind and hinder the adversary’s respiratory senses. By directing Root Trip into dense patches of subterranean mycelium or spreading roots breaking through the cavern ceiling, the avatar causes fungal tendrils to ensnare the foe’s legs, pinning them into awkward combat angles.
    • Defensive Tactical Application: While traversing dark tunnel systems, the Sprout’s Warning detects lurking cave vermin or predatory oozes navigating along rock shelves before they can drop from above. If an ambush occurs, the avatar activates Vegetative Heckle on the luminescent cavern lichens, causing the bio-matter to hum, crackle, and rustle violently against the cave stone. The echoes bouncing off subterranean walls mask the avatar’s footfalls, granting the time needed to retreat into safer mine shafts.
  • Coastal Beaches, Kelp Shallows, and Salt Marshes
    • Offensive Tactical Application: Along coastal flats and saltwater inlets, the avatar utilizes shoreline reeds, sea grass, and shallow kelp beds. When engaging aquatic foes or shoreline raiders, the avatar triggers Root Trip on submerged marsh grass or drift kelp, causing the slick aquatic strands to bind around the target’s legs and pull them face-first into the tide. A rapid discharge of the Tactical Dandelion Puff into the coastal wind sends drifting seed particles straight into the enemy’s formation, disrupting their concentration.
    • Defensive Tactical Application: Moving through swampy coastal terrain, the avatar remains alert as the brooch’s Flora Whispers relay the petty grievances of marsh reeds regarding stagnant bog water. When attacked by swamp predators, the avatar triggers Vegetative Heckle across the salt grasses and mangrove roots, prompting the marsh greenery to hiss, shake, and project distracting noises across the water’s surface, breaking the predator’s lock and enabling the avatar to escape across the shoals.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight: A sudden burst of luminous chartreuse and faint ultraviolet sparks flares directly in the center of the avatar’s field of vision as the brooch’s central seed pod dilates. Tiny spiraling wisps of green luminescence swirl around the brooch, making nearby weeds and moss outline themselves in sharp, radiant halos.
  • Sound: The avatar hears a distinct, sharp pop resembling the snapping of a dry twig, followed immediately by an overlapping chorus of high-pitched, gossiping voices. The voices sound like dozens of tiny, muffled gossips whispering directly into the avatar’s ears, giggling and complaining about nearby soil quality, weather conditions, and footwear.
  • Touch: A sharp, tickling vibration spreads out across the avatar’s chest where the brooch is pinned, radiating a sudden surge of dry, earthy warmth. A fine static prickle runs down the avatar’s arms as natural mana courses through the hands and into the botanical focus.
  • Smell: A heavy rush of freshly aerated loam, damp river moss, and sharply pungent crushed mint floods the avatar’s nasal passages, instantly cutting through any ambient foul odors in the immediate area.
  • Taste: A faint, distinct mineral tang resembling raw chlorophyll, dandelion milk, and sweet root sap manifests on the back of the avatar’s tongue.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Ley-Tingle: Through the Mind’s Eye, the avatar experiences an immediate metaphysical tug connecting their central mana pool directly to the root systems of every living plant within thirty feet.
    • Bio-Pressure Awareness: An intuitive spatial sense reveals the exact bio-density of surrounding plant matter, making dense bushes feel like solid anchors and sparse grass feel like frail threads across the avatar’s internal mindscape.
    • Ethereal Snicker: A mild psychic resonance ripples into the avatar’s conscious memory, imparting an absurd sense of collective plant-based amusement that borders on slight mental disorientation.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight: Observers witness the small carved wooden brooch on the avatar’s chest suddenly twitch and expand. Two miniature leafy sprigs shoot upward, waving frantically like tiny green arms while the center pod releases a brief, glittering cloud of pale white dandelion spores and swirling green light.
  • Sound: Anyone standing within fifteen feet hears a distinct sneeze followed by a chorus of tiny, comical rustling noises that sound unmistakably like irritated, chirping voices muttering in unison from the bushes and grass.
  • Touch: Creatures standing directly adjacent to the user feel a faint breeze of warm, dry air puffing outward from the avatar’s chest, carrying light static that makes fine arm hairs stand on end.
  • Smell: A sudden, overwhelming waft of freshly mowed lawn and sweet spearmint catches the breeze, washing over everyone in the near vicinity.
  • Taste: Nearby onlookers who inhale deeply through their mouths catch a lingering powdery taste of dry pollen and wild herbal dust.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Ambient Magic Flare: Any magic wielder using True Sight notices a vivid ultraviolet bloom flashing around the avatar’s torso, outlining the brooch as a Tier 1 nature conduit channeling active elemental weave.
    • Tremor Feedback: Burrowing entities or creatures utilizing tremorsense feel a sudden, rhythmic series of micro-vibrations pulsing through the immediate topsoil as the local roots twitch in unison.

Positives

  • Immediate Combat Feedback: The prominent auditory sneeze and physical vibration provide an unmistakable sensory alert, ensuring the avatar never misses the moment the activation takes effect or when hidden threats approach.
  • High Sensory Concealment: The strong smell of fresh mint and the cloud of drifting spores effectively masks the avatar’s natural scent and physical silhouette from standard tracking beasts.
  • Visual Area Mapping: The bright chartreuse highlighting seen through the avatar’s vision instantly reveals hidden terrain features, overgrown pitfalls, and snaring roots in dim environments.
  • Morale Disruption: The ridiculous whispering and jeering created by the flora frequently confuses and demoralizes humanoid foes, forcing them to waste attention looking around for hidden snipers.

Negatives

  • Auditory Compromise: The loud sneeze, popping seed pod, and audible vegetative chatter make total stealth impossible in quiet, enclosed environments like crypts, stone hallways, or enemy camps.
  • Olfactory Drawback: The powerful burst of mint and fertile soil can attract scent-tracking apex monsters that hunt specifically for fresh botanical or agricultural sources.
  • Sensory Overload: The barrage of unsolicited plant commentary, combined with the pollen taste and static tingling, can cause mild cognitive annoyance, resulting in short-term irritation if the avatar activates the item repeatedly in dense flora.
  • Visible Conduit Target: The glowing chartreuse flare clearly marks the avatar’s chest location to distant archers and hostile spellcasters during nighttime or low-light encounters.

Recipe: Fabrication of the Gossiping Verdant Brooch

Materials Needed

  • 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted catalyst)
  • 1 Flake of Polished Bauxite or Dense River Clay (approximately 2 inches in diameter)
  • 1 Heartwood Branch of Seasoned Mosswood (carved to 3 inches in length)
  • 1 Living Giant Dandelion Seed Pod (freshly harvested within 3 in-game days)
  • 2 Ounces of Concentrated Willow Sap (extracted via Fluid Collector)
  • 1 Ounce of Feral Badger Blood or Skitter-Mole Ichor (reagent base for hazard-alert properties)
  • 3 Feet of Drawn Copper Wire (mundane conducting thread)
  • 2 Live Sprouting Twigs of Wild Sweet Mint

Tools Required

  • Fluid Collector (fine needle caliber for extracting botanical sap and beast ichor)
  • Woodcarver’s Gouge and Fine Detailing Knife
  • Jeweler’s Pliers and Wire-Bending Mandrel
  • Alchemical Mortar, Pestle, and Glass Infusion Crucible
  • Handheld Arcane Battery or Focused Magic Conduit (for charging and stabilizing the crystal)

Skill Requirements

  • Nature Crafting / Woodcarving: Skill Level 5 or higher
  • Alchemical Crafting / Herbalism: Skill Level 5 or higher
  • Magic Weaving / Conduit Inscription: Skill Level 5 or higher

Crafting Steps

  • Preparation of the Reagent Matrix: Place the concentrated willow sap and beast ichor into the glass infusion crucible. Grind the living giant dandelion seed pod lightly in the mortar to release its aromatic oils without crushing the seeds, then submerge it into the mixture. Gently warm the crucible using low steam or a gentle heat source until the liquid thickens into a pale-green, glowing binding paste.
  • Carving the Core Frame: Using the woodcarver’s gouge, shape the seasoned mosswood into a hollowed clasp frame featuring an open central housing for the catalyst and two symmetrical upper sockets for the sprouting sprigs. Inscribe microscopic canal runes along the inner rim to direct the flow of natural mana toward the wearer’s chest.
  • Mounting the Substrate: Cut and polish the bauxite flake to fit smoothly against the rear base of the wooden frame. Secure the bauxite with resin, ensuring a smooth, non-abrasive surface that can rest comfortably against common cloth garments without tearing fabric.
  • Embedding the Catalyst and Biological Components: Seat the Tier 1 coin-sized magic crystal firmly into the hollowed center of the wooden housing. Coat the crystal in the prepared alchemical reagent paste, then seat the live dandelion seed pod directly atop the crystal so the botanical fibers fuse to the crystalline surface. Insert the two live mint twigs into the upper frame sockets, packing the bases with paste to ensure continuous vegetative life.
  • Structural Binding and Wire Wrapping: Anchor the components using the drawn copper wire. Wrap the wire tightly around the wood and bauxite perimeter, weaving the coils in a counter-clockwise spiral to form a conductive circuit that binds the crystal’s energy channels directly to the outer foliage.
  • Arcane Weave Infusion and Final Stabilization: Channel natural mana through a handheld conduit into the copper circuit for one full minute. Focus the Mind’s Eye on the catalyst until the seed pod twitches and a soft chartreuse light pulses through the mint leaves. Roll a d20 to verify stability: on a roll of 2 through 20, the magical transference solidifies cleanly into a functional Tier 1 nature conduit (on a roll of 1, the crystal shatters into useless shards and the components are destroyed; on a roll of 20, the brooch gains an extra charge capacity).

Loud Leaves and Very Confused Wood-Walker

In the many thousands of rotations before the counting of the great moon numbers, when the soil was yet moist from the early breath of the great mother-mountain, there walked a person of two legs whose name has been eaten by water-bugs. Some scrolls call him the Walker of Tall Stalks, while other bark-papers say he was merely a man who had great trouble finding where he left his walking staff. He was an inhabitant of the green clumps of earth where the trees were very tall and did not care about the affairs of people with soft feet.

This man desired with great heaviness in his liver to understand what the big trees were thinking when the great star Helios walked across the high ceiling. He said to his neighbors with many loud hand-gestures, “Behold, the grand oaks and the silent ferns possess the deep thought-stones of the world-mother. If I can only place my ear-holes against their green mouths, I shall learn where the gold-rocks hide and why the rain decides to fall upon my head when I have left my rain-hat behind.”

The neighbors, who were very busy drying fish and avoiding large tooth-beasts, told him to cease making noise and go harvest tubers. But the man would not listen with his ears. Instead, he took a very sharp needle-tool and stabbed the trunks of weeping willows until their sticky water filled a clay bowl. He took also the red juice of a bad-tempered digging beast that had perished after eating a rock, and he gathered the puff-balls of the white meadow-heads that fly away when the wind sneezes.

He sat upon a flat stone that was not quite flat, and with great grunting and many strange words that lacked proper grammar, he twisted brown sticks and shiny red-metal strands around a lump of magic ice-rock that was the heaviness of one round metal token. He tied it very tightly with copper strings so that the magic could not run away into the mud. When he was finished, the object looked like a very small bird nest that had suffered from an accident involving a heavy boot.

He pinned this contraption onto the front cloth of his torso, right where the ribs protect the heart-meat. Immediately, the magic ice-rock grew warm like a sun-baked toad, and the small green leaves upon the wood-frame began to twitch like the legs of an upside-down beetle.

The man smiled with great pride in his teeth. He walked into the deep brush, spreading his arms wide to receive the grand prophecies of the ancient soil. He stood beneath a mighty elder-tree whose roots were thicker than three fat oxen, closed his eye-balls, and opened the spirit-receptive parts of his thinking-box.

The brooch on his chest gave a tremendous, wet sneeze that sprayed white fluff into his beard.

Then the voices of the green things came into his ears, but they did not speak of the creation of the stars, nor did they speak of the ancient wars of the sky-beings.

The mighty elder-tree, whose branches held the clouds, groaned with a creaking noise and muttered, “Look at this strange biped standing directly upon my third-favorite taproot. His sandals are made of terrible cow-hide that has been cured with cheap salt. It gives my bark the itching sickness. Why does he breathe so loudly through his snout? It is disturbing the moss.”

The man opened his eyes in great shock. He took three steps backward, but the low berry-bushes behind his shins immediately began to rustle and shriek in high-pitched voices, “Mind your heels, clumsy hairless ape! You are dropping dead skin-flakes upon our newest blossoms! Look at his tunic, it has not been washed since the last eclipse-week! What an absolute disgrace to the loam!”

The man tried to argue with the bushes, saying with dignity, “Silence, small foliage! I am the seeker of primeval truths! Tell me the secret of the hidden silver-wells!”

The patch of wild dandelions at his feet burst into tiny, whistling chuckles. “He seeks the silver-wells, yet he cannot even find a matching pair of foot-wrappings! Look at his left toe sticking through the leather! What a magnificent sage! Hail to the emperor of smelly feet!”

Every weed, blade of grass, and fungal nub within thirty paces began to take part in the great conversation. A patch of river-mint told a nearby fern that the man looked like a half-plucked duck that had fallen into a flour barrel. The fern replied that even the slime-worms had better posture. A grumpy patch of nettles claimed that if the man stood there any longer, they would knot his shoelaces together just to see him tumble into the dung of the wild boars.

The man became exceedingly furious in his mind. He attempted to pull the brooch from his garment, but the copper wires were caught in his wool-threads, and the little seed pod in the center was laughing so hard that it was vibrating against his collarbone, making his teeth chatter like dry seeds in a gourd.

As he struggled with his shirt, a very large and hungry striped predator crept through the tall bamboo, intending to eat the man from behind. The beast stepped very softly, making not a single sound with its soft paw-pads. However, as soon as the beast stepped within the ring of grass, the brooch let out a sound like a startled goose and shouted through the voice of a trampled daisy, “Alert! Alert! An ugly, striped fat-cat is sneaking behind the idiot with the bad tunic!”

The grass suddenly twisted itself into hard knots around the tiger-beast’s front ankles. The great predator, expecting a quiet meal, was tripped violently forward and landed upon its snout in a pile of rotten squash. The surrounding brush immediately began to jeer and screech at the beast, telling it that its stripes were crooked and that its tail was ridiculously short.

The predator became so deeply embarrassed and bewildered by the screaming, insulting vegetation that it scrambled to its feet, tucked its tail between its hind legs, and fled at high speed toward the mountains without biting anyone.

The man, seeing that he had not been eaten, took a deep breath of fresh air that smelled strongly of mint and crushed weeds. He looked down at the twitching, gossiping brooch upon his chest. The brooch made a small gurgling sound and whispered, “You are still terribly dressed, but at least you are not inside the stomach of the fat-cat. Now walk us toward the sun-patch, for our leaves require light and your shadow is annoying.”

The man walked back to his village. He did not gain the wisdom of the gods, nor did he find the locations of ancient treasure vaults, but whenever he walked through the wild woods, no serpent or bandit could ever surprise him, for the grass would never stop shouting about how much they disliked everyone who walked upon them.

Moral of the Story: When one demands that nature speak its mind, one must be prepared to hear that the flowers do not think very highly of you, yet even the most insulting friend will trip the tiger that comes to eat your shoes.

Targets caught in the area must succeed on a CON roll or suffer a Penalty Die to all physical and combat skill rolls for 1D4 rounds due to violent sneezing.
  • Tripping Vines (Active): By spending 3 Magic Points, the user commands nearby ground foliage or roots within 10 yards to knot together under a moving target. The target must pass a DEX or Dodge roll, or fall prone, taking 1 point of minor blunt damage while the surrounding weeds loudly jeer.
  • Distracting Chorus (Active): By spending 3 Magic Points, the wearer causes all flora within 15 yards to scream, whistle, and insult an adversary. The target must succeed on an INT or POW roll; on a failure, they suffer extreme distraction, granting other investigators a Bonus Die on Stealth or Fleeing checks to escape the scene.

Blades in the Dark

The Whisper-Briar Pin

  • Item Type: Arcane Implement / Curio
  • Load: 1 (Light)
  • Default Position / Effect: Risky / Standard

Game Mechanics

  • Incessant Chatter (Passive): When operating in an area with vegetation, gardens, or parks, the wearer may tap into the petty grievances of local plant life. Take +1d to Gather Information rolls using Attune or Survey when investigating recent foot traffic or hidden caches among greenery.
  • Spore Distraction (Active): When activating the brooch to create an immediate tactical opening or escape window, spend 1 Stress to deploy a stinging cloud of dandelion spores and screeching vegetation. This acts as a setup maneuver: on a successful Attune or Finesse action roll, grant +1 Effect level or improved Position to a crew member’s follow-up action.
  • Vegetative Snare (Active): Spend 2 Stress to cause overgrown roots, vines, or weeds to rapidly knot around a target’s boots or legs. Treat this as inflicting a temporary complication on an enemy (effectively reducing their Tier or movement scale by 1 step for the immediate exchange) as the foliage trips and heckles them.
  • Complication / Devil’s Bargain Hook: The brooch cannot keep its thoughts quiet. Taking a Devil’s Bargain or suffering a 4/5 consequence often causes the brooch to sneeze loudly, emit an overwhelming mint odor, or have local plants publicly insult the scoundrel’s attire, instantly raising local Alertness or generating +1 Heat.
