Myth 19 of the Boundless Serpent

Lore:

  • Across Saṃsāra, street buskers, roof-striders, and escaped captives share an enduring superstition: “The bone that knows how to bow never breaks, and no cage can hold what learns to flow like milk.” This myth traces back to folk ballads of the Silk-Jointed Weaver, a legendary street acrobat of the early river cities who was thrown into forty different iron maidens, gibbets, and narrow stone cells, yet walked out of each before dawn simply because she regarded human joints not as hinges of brittle horn, but as braided silk thongs waiting to be undone. Folk across rural caravans and city alleys believe that if an acrobat truly casts aside the fear of displacement and wholly believes their frame is as fluid as river grease, solid barriers become mere suggestions. Because myth magic answers unwavering collective conviction, an avatar who embraces this superstitious fluid-logic manifests the capacity to slide, compress, and slip past confinement that would crush or bind ordinary flesh.

Description:

  • This practical, form-fitting accessory is a wide, supple spine-brace crafted from smoke-gray eel-skin and layered river-snake leather, designed to wrap snugly around the lower ribs and lumbar region. The hides are treated with rendering grease and mineral oil, making them velvety, silent, and exceptionally pliable. The seams are reinforced with pale, double-twisted gut cord, and the brace fastens across the abdomen via five pairs of polished bone toggles carved from river pike ribs. Embedded directly over the wearer’s sacrum in a flat, dark-iron setting is a coin-sized, unpolished smoky quartz crystal with a faint yellow-amber fracture line running through its center. When touched by mythic focus, the stone hums with a faint, oily warmth. A tiny silvered leaf tag stitched into the inner hem carries the maker’s cursive scratch: “Kaelen of the Reeds.”

Stats:

  • Tier: 1
  • Rarity: Common
  • Item Hit Points: 30 (Avatar Base plus Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
  • Resilience: 10
  • Armor Check (AC): 1 (Adding directly to the avatar’s Defense score, within the maximum limit of 3 per item tier)
  • Suggested Market Value: 105 silver coins (Subject to local access, merchant haggling, and buyer-beware dynamics)
  • Weight: 1.5 pounds (Worn as a waist/rib wrap)

Passives:

  • Silk-Jointed Suppleness: While this brace is worn and attuned, the avatar gains a +1 competence bonus on Dexterity (Acrobatics) and Strength (Athletics) checks made to escape physical grapples, wriggle free from mundane manacles, ropes, or nets, and squeeze through tight apertures, crawlways, or iron bars wide enough only for their head.
  • Cushioning Sinuousness: When suffering falling damage or bludgeoning impact from tight collapsing spaces, the avatar’s joints yield smoothly with the shock, reducing any bludgeoning or falling damage sustained by 1 point (to a minimum of 1 damage).

Actives:

  • Eel-Turn Compression: Once per short rest, as a bonus action (or instantaneous free reaction when moving through a narrow hazard), the avatar invokes the myth of the bone that bows. For 1 minute, their ribs, shoulders, and pelvic girdle temporarily compress and slide without dislocation pain or structural damage, allowing the avatar to move at full normal walking speed through apertures, pipe-ways, and crevices as narrow as 8 inches in diameter without squeezing penalties.
  • Shed the Shackle: Once per day (1/long rest), as an action, the avatar rubs the smoky quartz crystal against a limb or joint currently held by a physical lock, shackle, bear-trap, or restraining clamp while whispering the weaver’s rhyme. The trapped extremity temporarily becomes slick and compressible, instantly freeing the avatar from that single mundane restraint without requiring a tool or check.

Commerce and Acquisition of Myth 19 of the Boundless Serpent

  • Traveling Carnivals, Troupe Wagons, and Busker Caravans:
    • Found camped outside city gates, along regional fairgrounds, or clustered near river festival plazas, these mobile outfits are operated by veteran acrobats, tumblers, and circus quartermasters.
    • In these colorful wagons, gear is tailored specifically for contortionists, high-wire walkers, and escape artists who rely on extreme bodily flexibility for their performances.
    • An unaffiliated wanderer or freelance performer seeking to purchase the brace from a troupe wagon encounters a direct retail exchange governed by typical caravan customs; the base retail price is set at the suggested value of 105 silver coins (or 10 gold and 5 silver coins).
    • If the buyer belongs to an accredited guild—such as the Tumblers’ Fellowship, Buskers’ League, or River Troupe Collective—and demonstrates their membership insignia, the standard faction discount of 10% multiplied by avatar tier applies. For a tier 1 avatar, this reduces the cost by 10% (10.5 silver coins), bringing the purchase price to roughly 94 silver and 5 copper coins (standardly rounded to 95 silver in caravan ledgers).
    • Transactions in authorized troupe markets are debited directly through the World Bank via the Mind’s Eye, with the ledger charging the customary 1% bank transfer fee.
    • When selling an intact brace back to a carnival wagon master, the payout follows the liquidation formula: baseline value minus 10% multiplied by the seller’s tier level. A tier 1 avatar receives approximately 94 to 95 silver coins, provided the eel-skin retains its supple oil temper, the bone toggles remain uncracked, and the quartz stone retains its full 30 hit points.
  • Thieves’ Guild Safehouses, Smuggler Cellars, and Black-Market Fences:
    • Operating deep within subterranean drainage networks, hidden sub-basements of dockside taverns, or concealed rooms behind pawnshops, illicit syndicates deal heavily in equipment suited for infiltration, burglary, and rapid escape.
    • Underworld fixers value the brace immensely because it allows operatives to slip through barred cell windows, chimney flues, and sewer gratings without making noise or triggering complex wards.
    • Fences in these environments deal exclusively in physical, untraceable coinage—preferring solid metal coins (especially gold sovereigns) and refusing all World Bank electronic transfers or Mind’s Eye records to avoid judicial detection.
    • Due to the item’s high utility in circumventing city prisons and manor security, black-market purveyors mark up the price considerably; a buyer must typically pay between 120 and 210 silver coins (tendered as 12 to 21 physical gold pieces), with no faction discounts offered.
    • Selling the brace to a criminal fence guarantees total anonymity, as no transaction notices reach municipal magistrates. An illicit buyer usually pays the standard baseline of 94 to 95 silver coins in physical currency, but will pay up to 130 to 140 silver coins if a local burglary crew urgently needs escape gear to break an operative out of a city dungeon.
  • River Harbor Chandleries, Fishmonger Lofts, and Coastal Tackle Shops:
    • Situated along marshy river deltas, tidal estuaries, and busy fishing docks, these rustic maritime shops specialize in oilskins, eel-traps, ropework, and water-repellent leather.
    • Artisans in these settlements frequently work with river-snake and eel hides, producing flexible utility belts and diving wraps for dredge-divers, net-menders, and bilge-scrapers who must squeeze into flooded keels and narrow hull spaces.
    • Independent explorers can acquire the piece at the standard market baseline of 105 silver coins.
    • Registered dockworkers, sailors’ guildmates, or canal dredgers receive their recognized 10% tier-based price reduction, paying approximately 95 silver coins.
    • When liquidating the brace to a coastal chandler, the buyer inspects the gut stitching and leather suppleness; if salt crusted or grease-stripped, minor refurbishment fees are deducted from the standard 94-to-95-silver return before the transaction is finalized on the ledger.
  • Rural Village Tanneries, Curio Shacks, and Frontier Trading Posts:
    • Located in remote frontier settlements, swamp outposts, and wilderness river crossings far from major trade arteries, commerce relies heavily on immediate utility, local bartering, and varied knowledge of the arcane.
    • A frontier trader or hedge-mystic who recognizes the myth-magic of the Boundless Serpent and its utility against creature grapples or entrapment will demand a premium, charging up to 130 silver coins in raw hides, smoked fish, or refined lamp oils.
    • Conversely, an ordinary rural tanner or backwoods trader who lacks the Mind’s Eye sensitivity to evaluate the smoky quartz crystal will view the wrap as nothing more than a strip of oily fish-skin fitted with animal bone. In such humble posts, a perceptive buyer can acquire the brace for as little as 30 to 40 silver coins, or receive a meager offer of only 15 to 25 silver coins when attempting to sell it to a shopkeeper who treats it as crude, smelly trapper gear.

Roleplay Applications of Myth 19 of the Boundless Serpent Across Diverse Environments

  • Subterranean Dungeons, Torture Cells, and Sewer Aqueducts:
    • Defensive Roleplay: When cornered in a dead-end cell or trapped behind locked iron bars, the avatar relies on pure fluid conviction. As heavy portcullises drop or guards attempt to pin them against stone masonry, the avatar drops low, their spine flexing like an eel’s. Cushioning Sinuousness absorbs the brunt of falling rubble or heavy cudgel blows. If manacled to an interrogation ring or caught in an iron claw-trap, the avatar invokes Shed the Shackle, turning wrist bones supple enough to slide through solid iron bands without resistance, leaving empty restraints clattering to the floor.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Infiltration and ambush thrive in the cramped conduits beneath the city. Using Eel-Turn Compression, the avatar snakes through drainage flues, waste sluices, or arrow slits no wider than eight inches, emerging silently behind garrison lines or sleeping jailers. Rather than brute-forcing a barricaded threshold, the avatar compresses their ribs, glides under a heavy portcullis, and unlatches the gate from within. In close quarters, the avatar’s fluid body mechanics allow them to slip beneath a warden’s outstretched grip, using the enemy’s forward momentum to twist behind their back and apply a lethal sleeper hold.
  • High-Rooftop District, Slum Canopies, and Urban Chimney Flues:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Escaping rooftop sentries or pursuit archers across steep tile roofs, the avatar makes impossible evasions. When an archer takes aim, the avatar ducks with an unnatural, serpentine roll, the lumbar wrap shifting their center of gravity to absorb abrupt directional changes. If knocked from a roof pitch or forced to drop between closely set buildings, Cushioning Sinuousness dampens the bone-jarring impact against alley cobbles, allowing the avatar to roll into a sprint rather than break an ankle or knee.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Chimneys, dumbwaiters, and ventilation shafts become open avenues of attack. While rooftop sentries watch the stairwells, the avatar slips head-first down a narrow soot flue using Eel-Turn Compression, dropping into an estate’s private solar completely undetected. In combat on slippery eaves, the avatar uses their unnatural joint play to bait overextended thrusts from guards; as the blade strikes, the avatar twists their waist at an impossible acute angle, causing the weapon to glance harmlessly off the eel-skin while counter-striking the off-balance guard off the ledge.
  • Dense Mangrove Swamps, Tanglewood Canopies, and Reed Marshes:
    • Defensive Roleplay: In environments tangled with grasping roots, thorn vines, and predatory mud, the brace ensures total mobility. When a constricting marsh viper, carnivorous creeper, or heavy mud-dredge attempts to grapple the avatar, Silk-Jointed Suppleness prevents the entrapment from taking hold, allowing the avatar to twist free like a greased fish. The water-cured eel-hide repels rot and waterlogging, keeping the wrap supple even after days submerged in brackish water.
    • Offensive Roleplay: The avatar uses the swamp’s dense understory for lightning strikes. By compressing their frame, they bypass tangled mangrove roots and submerged hollow logs that would halt an armored pursuer, setting up ambushes from waist-deep muck. In physical scuffles with swamp brigands or reptilian beasts, the avatar entangles their own limbs around an opponent’s joints in an unnatural serpentine lock, leveraging their flexible ribs to hyperextend an adversary’s arm while remaining completely immune to joint locks themselves.
  • Ship Holds, Bilge Pits, and Coastal Rigging:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Amidst the chaos of shipboard combat or a gale-force storm, the tight quarters belowdecks present extreme hazards. When heavy cargo shifts or timber beams crush inward during a hull breach, Cushioning Sinuousness blunts the bludgeoning trauma of falling crates. If grabbed by boarding marines or wrapped in rigging ropes during a scuffle, the avatar slips through the grappling arms effortlessly, utilizing the damp roll of the ship to slide along the deck like sea-water.
    • Offensive Roleplay: The cramped compartments between deck timbers and ballast piles become the avatar’s primary hunting ground. By sliding through bilge hatches, rudder casings, and ballast access slots using Eel-Turn Compression, the avatar surfaces behind the opposing crew’s line to sabotage rudder chains, sever rigging, or assassinate officers from crawlspaces thought unreachable by grown humanoids. When boarded, the avatar leaps through rope tackle, wrapping their legs around shrouds at impossible angles to fling boarding enemies down to the wave-swept deck.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight:
    • The cloudy smoky quartz crystal centered over the sacrum flares with a vibrant, unyielding amber-gold brilliance. Swirling tendrils of amber light and soft, floating luminous motes rise from the stone, weaving between the carved bone toggles and the seams of the eel-skin.
    • In the Mind’s Eye, the avatar’s internal skeleton appears as an interconnected system of fluid, glowing lines. Joints, sockets, and ribs highlight in warm amber, showing precisely how the skeletal frame will compress, slide, and yield without fracture.
  • Sound:
    • A deep, rhythmic hiss fills the user’s inner ears, resembling the sound of river water coursing smoothly through smooth reed beds or silk thongs drawing taut across polished bone.
    • When executing Shed the Shackle, a distinct, pneumatic slip echoes in the mind as the compressed limb slides effortlessly through rigid iron bands.
  • Smell:
    • Nasal passages are filled with the clean, mineral aroma of river silt, cool paraffin wax, and rendered snake tallow, cutting through foul stagnant air or sewer rot.
  • Taste:
    • A light, slick, oily sensation registers along the back of the tongue and palate, leaving a neutral, cool aftertaste reminiscent of cold freshwater.
  • Touch:
    • The spine-brace tightens snugly around the lower back and lumbar vertebrae, radiating an oily, soothing warmth that sinks directly into the spinal column.
    • The user experiences an immediate, weightless looseness throughout their entire body; tight joints feel greased, ribs become pliable, and the sensation of bone grinding or pinching vanishes entirely.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Spatial Aperture Intuition: The avatar gains an instinctive, geometric awareness of openings and crawlways. At a glance, the user subconsciously senses whether an 8-inch gap, drainage pipe, or iron grille can accommodate their compressed frame.
    • Elastic Kinesics: A continuous mental feedback loop informs the wearer of their center of gravity and spatial tension, providing complete confidence in bodily contortions that would typically trigger panic or claustrophobia.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight:
    • Onlookers see the smoky quartz over the wearer’s lower back ignite with an unmistakable amber glow, casting twisting light ribbons and motes of gold along the smoke-gray leather.
    • When Eel-Turn Compression is invoked, observers witness an uncanny, unsettling visual distortion: the user’s shoulders roll forward, their ribcage flattens, and their silhouette narrows dramatically, sliding through tight gaps like an eel into mud.
  • Sound:
    • Observers within five feet hear a faint, supple rustling—similar to dry snake scales gliding over polished stone—alongside a faint, low hum from the quartz stone.
  • Smell:
    • A faint trace of dry river grass and rendered mineral oil drifts across the immediate area, noticeable only to those within arm’s reach.
  • Taste:
    • Observers perceive no taste.
  • Touch:
    • Anyone attempting to grasp or pin the user feels their hands slide off with startling ease, as if trying to hold a wet fish or an oiled leather strap; the wearer’s flesh and gear yield beneath pressure rather than offering solid leverage.

Positives

  • Grants a reliable +1 Armor Check, adding defensive resilience to the avatar’s baseline without consuming a major armor plate slot.
  • The +1 bonus on Dexterity (Acrobatics) and Strength (Athletics) checks provides consistent utility against creature grapples, pinned states, and physical restraints.
  • Cushioning Sinuousness mitigates falling and bludgeoning damage from narrow, collapsing hazards, providing passive protection during failed climbing attempts or roof drops.
  • Eel-Turn Compression turns chimneys, drainpipes, arrow slits, and narrow grilles into accessible traversal routes at full walking speed.
  • Shed the Shackle provides a guaranteed, automatic escape from a mundane manacle or bear-trap once per day without requiring tools, skill checks, or lockpicks.

Negatives

  • The luminous amber flaring of the quartz crystal makes stealth difficult in darkened spaces while active abilities are being channeled.
  • Shed the Shackle is limited to a single use per day, leaving the user vulnerable to follow-up captures or successive layers of restraints.
  • Eel-Turn Compression lasts only 1 minute per short rest; mistiming a transit through an extended, narrow crawlway risks stranding the avatar in a tight crevice when normal skeletal rigidity returns.
  • The item provides no defense against mental assaults, energy discharges, elemental attacks, or piercing/slashing strikes, offering strictly kinetic bludgeoning mitigation.

Crafting Recipe: Myth 19 of the Boundless Serpent

Materials Needed

  • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal, coin-sized and unpolished, cut from smoky quartz containing a natural internal yellow-amber fracture line (harvested from a subterranean serpent, river drake, or burrowing crawler).
  • Two square feet of cured, smoke-gray giant eel-skin, oil-tanned and supple.
  • One square foot of textured river-snake hide for lumbar reinforcement bands.
  • Ten polished bone toggles (approximately two inches long), hand-carved from river pike or gar ribs.
  • Four yards of double-twisted dried gut cord, pre-treated with beeswax and mineral oil.
  • Two fluid ounces of refined snake tallow or rendered aquatic mammal fat infused with mineral oil.
  • One circular low-profile dark-iron bezel mount with four fold-over retaining prongs.
  • One small silvered leaf-shaped copper tag blank fitted with an iron jump ring.

Tools Required

  • One Fluid Collector fitted with an extraction tube for biological tallow refining.
  • A leather pricking iron and round wooden mallet.
  • Two fine curved leather needles for cross-stitching gut cord.
  • A bone folder or horn burnishing tool for flattening seams.
  • A heated iron stylus for carving and marking the silvered maker’s tag.
  • A low-heat oil bath basin for hot-fat conditioning and tempering.
  • An arcane focus implement to align the crafter’s mental intent with the quartz crystalline lattice.

Skill Requirements

  • Leatherworking and Skinning: Skill Level 5 or higher to dress, skive, and cross-stitch thin eel-skin and snake scales without tearing the delicate, oil-saturated fibers.
  • Magical Crafting: Skill Level 5 or higher to establish cognitive resonance with the quartz crystal, anchoring the myth of fluid joint play without fracturing the stone’s amber vein.
  • Alchemical Crafting: Skill Level 4 or higher to correctly compound the aquatic tallow and mineral oil bath, achieving high elasticity without allowing the hides to rot or degrade.

Crafting Steps

  • Hide Profiling and Layering: Measure and cut the smoke-gray eel-skin into a contoured, wide lumbar girdle that tapers toward the hips and flares over the lower ribs. Cut five horizontal support bands from the river-snake hide, skiving the edges thin to ensure seamless layering.
  • Oil Tempering and Hot-Fat Soaking: Immerse the cut eel-skin and snake-hide strips in a heated bath of refined snake tallow and mineral oil at 120°F for twenty minutes. Remove the hides and work them vigorously by hand, rolling and flexing the grain across a rounded wooden post until the leather reaches complete, silent pliability.
  • Seam Stitching and Toggle Fitting: Using the pricking iron and mallet, punch paired diagonal holes along the front overlapping edges. Attach the ten polished bone toggles in five opposing pairs down the abdominal closure line, securing each firmly with double-twisted gut cord.
  • Structural Band Laminating: Cross-stitch the five river-snake reinforcing bands across the lumbar section using the curved needles and waxed gut cord. Flatten each seam with a bone burnishing tool to guarantee the brace sits flush against the wearer’s spine without binding or catching on outer garments.
  • Crystal Bezel Mounting and Tagging: Rivet the circular dark-iron bezel mount to the exterior lumbar center, aligning it directly over the position of the wearer’s sacrum. Inscribe the maker’s signature (“Kaelen of the Reeds”) onto the silvered leaf tag with the heated iron stylus, securing it to the lower hem by an iron ring. Seat the smoky quartz crystal into the bezel, folding the four dark-iron retaining prongs tightly across the stone’s edges.
  • Gut Sealing and Burnishing: Rub the remaining warm mineral-tallow balm along all exterior gut stitches and toggle loops. Burnish the edges until completely rounded, water-sealed, and resistant to sweat, river mud, and acidic friction.
  • Cognitive Attunement and Myth Conduiting: Rest the finished brace flat upon the crafting bench. Place the palm of your non-dominant hand firmly over the smoky quartz crystal while directing your arcane focus implement with the dominant hand. Recite the old street busker’s cadence of the Silk-Jointed Weaver in a low, continuous whisper, focusing absolute cognitive belief on the idea that bone is merely braided silk and rigid cages are illusions. Maintain the mental flow until the amber fracture inside the quartz ignites with a warm, steady golden glow, permanently anchoring the item’s baseline 1 Armor Check, 30 hit points, and joint-compression enchantments.

Silk-Jointed Weaver and Great Disappointment of Forty Strong Boxes

In the days when the river cities of Saṃsāra had not yet learned to make bricks straight and the water was full of fat, greasy eels that did not know how to die, there walked the woman-acrobat whose calling was the Silk-Jointed Weaver. The old tablet-scratchings say her ribs were not made of sheep-horn or kiln-fired bone like the ribs of normal walking men; her ribs were made of braided silk thread dipped in cold pond-grease, so when she bent her middle, her ears could touch her heels without any shouting or bad sounds coming from her gristle.

In that season, the ruler of the stone canal was the High Bailiff named Iron-Tooth Gorm. Gorm was a man who loved very much to put living things into boxes. If a dog barked out of rhythm, Gorm built a small box for the dog. If a baker sold bread that had air inside the crumb, Gorm built a heavy cedar chest and hammered the baker into the dark with four brass spikes. Iron-Tooth Gorm looked upon the Silk-Jointed Weaver as she turned her spine inside-out upon an overturned beer-cask in the market square, while the river-men threw copper coins into her wooden bowl. Gorm said through his teeth: This woman has too much bend in her middle. A person who bends so easily will forget to bow to the magistrate. I will make her straight by putting her where the walls do not move.

The second slate, which was broken by water and mended with pitch, tells that Gorm’s heavy-men took the Weaver while she was sleeping inside an empty reed-basket. They did not put simple rope upon her wrists, because they knew that rope is only dry grass and grass likes to untwist. They forged a cage of forty square iron bars, each bar as thick as the thigh of a plow-ox, and they lowered the Weaver into the deepest hole beneath the mud-wharf where the drainage water runs thick like porridge.

Iron-Tooth Gorm stood above the pit and called down into the dark: Now you will stay until your spine learns to be like a fence-post!

The Weaver did not make a weep. She did not strike the iron with her soft hands. She had wrapped about her kidneys a broad girdle of gray eel-skin, cured in the fat of three-winter river snakes, and held across her belly by ten small bones taken from the jaws of river pike. In the middle of her back sat a cloudy pebble of quartz that had an amber crack through its liver, which she had taken from the gizzard of a blind silt-crawler that lived by slipping through the cracks of sunken boats.

The Weaver sat in the mud and spoke the low words that are used by river-leeches when they want to go between the scales of a carp. She spoke to her own skeleton: The bone that knows how to bow never breaks. Flesh is only milk that has forgotten how to spill.

The translation here is very dark and difficult, but the scratched marks say her collarbones made a sound like wet leather being twisted in a wringer. Her two shoulders rolled inward until they kissed each other beneath her throat. Her ribs flattened themselves like dry rushes under the wheel of a hay-cart. She became as narrow as an eel that wishes to hide beneath a flat shingle.

When the night-watchman walked past the pit at the third bell to spit his tobacco-leaf into the water, he looked down between the iron bars. He saw only the Weaver’s little wool slippers left behind in the dung. The Weaver herself had already slid upward through the drain-hole, which was only wide enough for a fat water-rat to pass through if the rat had not eaten since the new moon. She was sitting upon Gorm’s own pantry roof, eating his pickled plums and spitting the stones onto the cobblestones below.

Iron-Tooth Gorm became so angry that the hair inside his nose caught fire from his hot breathing. He commanded his smiths to make thirty-nine more cages. They made an iron maiden with spikes like boar-tusks; they made a stone box with no doors, sealed with molten lead; they made a barrel of seasoned bog-oak bound with twelve hoop-irons; they made a bronze chest with seven locks that required seven different keys kept by seven different blind monks who lived on seven different islands.

Each time the bailiff’s catch-poles dragged the Silk-Jointed Weaver into a new engine of holding, the Weaver only smiled with her crooked mouth. She would press the amber-veined stone at the small of her back, whisper the river-rhyme, and allow her joints to slip out of their little cups like plums falling out of a torn sack. Through the keyholes, through the air-slits where the cook passed in dry bread, through the narrow gaps where the oak planks had shrunk from the heat, the Weaver poured herself out like warm lard poured from a skillet.

On the fortieth morning, Iron-Tooth Gorm went down into his great vault to look upon the bronze chest. When he opened the seven locks with the seven keys of the seven monks, the chest was completely empty, save for three dead flies and a small handful of dried river-reeds tied into the shape of an open noose. Gorm sat down upon the bronze lid and began to beat his own forehead with his iron keys until his forehead was purple like an over-ripe fig, crying aloud: Nothing is solid! The world is made of water and grease, and my boxes are only holes with iron wrapped around the air!

It is written that Gorm went mad and threw all his forty cages into the deep river, where they sank into the silt and became houses for the fat mud-crabs. The Weaver lived along the reed-banks until her skin was as wrinkled as a dried turnip, yet even when she was ninety winters old, she could still fold herself three times into an ordinary wash-tub to take her bath. When she finally resolved to go away from the living world, she did not leave a corpse of heavy meat; she simply slid out of her eel-skin wrap during a heavy rainstorm and flowed down into the river-current, becoming a long, gray serpent that has no bones at all.

The Moral of the Story: He who builds heavy iron cages and trusts in the stiffness of his walls will spend his days weeping over empty boxes, while he who understands that the bone must learn to bow like the reed will find that all the padlocks of the world are only open gates through which the supple may walk at their pleasure.

  • Stunt (Cushioning Yield): When you take physical stress or consequences resulting strictly from long falls, crushing debris, or constricted cave-ins, you reduce the incoming hit by 1 shift (to a minimum of 1 shift of stress).
  • Stunt (Serpentine Compression): Once per session, you can invoke the item’s mythic fluid-logic to slip through impossibly tight spaces—such as chimney flues, drainage grates, or barred slits no wider than a hand-span—without needing an Overcome roll or suffering delays, allowing you to bypass physical barriers that would block normal passage.
  • Stunt (Shed the Shackle): Once per session, you may spend 1 Fate Point to immediately remove a situational aspect representing mundane physical restraint (such as Manacled, Bound in Hemp, or Caught in a Snare) without taking an action or making a roll.

Numenera & Cypher System

The Sinuous Lumbar Wrap

  • Level: 1 (Tier 1 Artifact)
  • Form: An oil-cured, smoke-gray eel-skin spine brace fastened with rib-bone toggles, featuring a cloudy smoky quartz crystal with an amber vein set over the lumbar.
  • Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (checked only upon activating the Eel-Turn Compression ability).
  • Effect (Constant):
    • The wearer’s Speed Edge increases by 1 when rolling to escape physical grapples, wiggle free from mundane bonds, or twist out of confining traps.
    • The wrap grants +1 Armor against physical bludgeoning damage caused by falling or crushing impacts in confined spaces.
  • Effect (Activated):
    • Eel-Turn Compression: For 1 minute, the wearer spends 1 Speed point to render their skeletal frame compressible and pliable. The difficulty of all tasks to slide, crawl, or run through narrow apertures, pipes, and openings as small as 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter is reduced by two steps. Upon activating this property, roll for Depletion.
    • Shed the Shackle: Once per 28-hour day, as an action, the wearer may touch the smoky quartz to a mundane physical lock, shackle, or manacle currently binding one of their limbs. The limb becomes slick and pliable, instantly slipping free of the restraint without requiring an Intellect or Speed task.
