Ocular Sovereigns Resilient Lantern Blade 841

Lore

During the bitter, sky-darkening civil schisms that threatened to fracture the 73 sovereign island nations of Saṃsāra, covert tribunals and martial academies found themselves paralyzed by deep-rooted illusions, hidden abuse of authority, and volatile arcane insurgencies. Beneath the supreme cosmological oversight and luminous judgment of the moon-goddess Gaialilith, an elite circle of daoist spirit-weavers, master weaponsmiths, and grand alchemists convened within an atelier driven by closed-circuit steam conduits balancing elemental fire and elemental water. Gathering five disparate Tier 1 matrices—the non-lethal protective discipline of Enchanted Training Weapons, the trauma-forged retribution of the ExtraHidden Shackle of the Abused, the deception-piercing obsidian optics of the Shadowveil Spectacles, the elemental matter-shifting mimicry of the Transmutation Stone, and the luminous darkness-dispelling essence of the Wisps Lantern—the artisans anchored them to a wagon-sized Tier 5 mana crystal. Through high-pressure catalytic consolidation, the darksteel, obsidian glass, shifting quartz alchemical core, ethereal wisp-flame, and cold-iron shackle links were fused into an indivisible, single physical object. The resulting Tier 5 relic stands as an unyielding instrument of enlightened truth, alchemical adaptation, retributive martial authority, and absolute revelation.

Description

An indivisible, single-edged curved saber and short-hafted glaive forged from matte-black cold-iron and darksteel, its wide crossguard seamlessly cast into an openwork cage housing a perpetually swirling, four-color ethereal wisp that shifts through sapphire, emerald, violet, and gold. Running along the spine of the blade is a set of dual, polished obsidian-glass optic conduits that capture ambient light and project faint, prismatic sensory lines into the wielder’s line of sight. Set into the ricasso is a smooth, runic transmutation stone that pulses with deep elemental currents, allowing the cold-iron blade to seamlessly shift its material density, texture, and weight at the bearer’s command. The grip is tightly bound in shadow-spun silk that terminates in a heavy, spiked iron pommel-ring bearing etched runes of enduring defiance. The weapon perpetually radiates a soothing herbal scent of morning dew and crushed clover, undercut by a sharp tang of ozone, while glowing calligraphic runes along the fuller hum with a soft, harmonic chime.

Multiple Passives Magic

  • Prismatic Wisp & Veilbreaker Vision: The caged wisp casts bright, ethereal light in a 60-foot radius and dim light for an additional 120 feet, dispelling all forms of magical darkness. The blade’s optical conduits grant the wielder true vision within the illuminated area, automatically piercing magical illusions, seeing invisible entities, detecting secret doors or compartments, and revealing hidden traps.
  • Resilience of the Unbroken Martyr: The wielder’s defensive posture is reinforced by the cold-iron shackle pommel. The wielder gains +3 to their Armor Check, complete immunity to fear and panic conditions, and resistance to psychic and necrotic trauma. Whenever the wielder is struck by a melee or ranged attack, their inner resolve surges, granting a cumulative +2 bonus to their next damage roll (stacking up to +10).
  • Protective Martial Discipline: The weapon’s blade is enchanted with the perfected warding matrices of the Arcane Academia. Whenever the wielder attacks, they can choose freely between lethal and non-lethal strikes without mechanical penalty. When making a non-lethal strike, the target’s physical harm is absorbed into kinetic fatigue, and the wielder gains a temporary protective barrier equal to the damage dealt for 1 round.
  • Alchemical Mimicry Matrix: Drawing from the transmutation stone set within the ricasso, the blade passively adapts its physical composition to exploit enemy vulnerabilities. The weapon can instantly mimic the properties of cold iron, silver, adamantine, or pure elemental quartz, bypassing material-based damage resistances effortlessly.

Multiple Active Magics

  • Burst of Disorienting Retribution (1 Action): The wielder sweeps the blade in a wide arc, flaring the cage-wisp and pommel-ring to release a blinding flash of multi-hued starlight accompanied by a deafening, harmonic scream of ancient torment in a 30-foot radius. All enemies in the area suffer 45 points of radiant-psychic damage and must succeed on a mental fortitude check (DC 15 via unified resolution) or become confused and incapacitated with weeping remorse for 2 rounds.
  • Matter-Shift Blade Strike (1 Action): Focusing their intent through the ricasso stone, the wielder strikes the ground or air, transmuting the blade’s form into a sweeping surge of razor-sharp stone shards, liquid metal, or pressurized steam in a 50-foot line. Enemies caught in the path suffer 50 points of transmutation impact damage, their armor or natural carapace is degraded by -3 for 1 minute, and the terrain along the line becomes difficult ground.
  • Defiant Retaliatory Slash (Reaction): Triggered immediately when the wielder is hit by an enemy attack. Channeling the stored pain of the impact through the pommel-ring, the wielder executes an instantaneous counter-strike against the attacker within weapon reach, dealing the weapon’s standard damage plus double the avatar’s Resilience rating (20 damage) in unmitigated retributive force.
  • Aura of the Sovereign Revealer (1 Action): The wielder plants the blade into the ground, causing the wisp’s light to surge outward into a 50-foot stationary dome for 3 rounds. Within this dome, all ongoing hostile spells, illusions, and shape-shifting disguises are immediately dispelled, allies gain a +5 bonus to all saving throws and skill checks, and any enemy attempting to strike an ally within the aura suffers 30 points of divine radiant feedback.

Targeting, Disabling, and Repairing Ocular Sovereign’s Resilient Lantern-Blade 841

  • Targeting and Disabling Thresholds:
    • To target the weapon directly, an attacker must declare a called strike against the lantern-blade held in the avatar’s grip rather than striking the avatar’s physical body.
    • The defensive threshold required to hit the weapon equals the avatar’s total Armor Check plus the avatar’s tier level (5) plus the roll of the avatar’s tier dice (5d12) plus the weapon’s native Armor Check modifier (+3).
    • If a hostile targeted strike equals or exceeds this combined threshold, the blow severs the resonant silver conduit circuits running along the spine, cracks the openwork wisp cage, and fractures the ricasso’s transmutation core, immediately disabling and unattuning the relic. All active and passive magical matrices—including the darkness-dispelling illumination, true sight, matter adaptation, protective non-lethal barriers, and retributive damage stacking—collapse instantly.
    • Once the weapon’s enchantments are disabled, further targeted strikes inflict structural damage directly against the weapon’s hit point pool.
    • The total hit point pool of the lantern-blade equals the wielder avatar’s maximum hit points plus 50 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 5).
    • The weapon enters a broken state when targeted strikes reduce its hit point pool by half or more: Avatar Maximum Hit Points + 50
    • In a broken state, the darksteel edge dulls and notches, the obsidian-glass optic conduits shatter, the ethereal wisp dissipates into inert smoke, the transmutation stone turns to chalky lime, and the cold-iron pommel-ring cracks, rendering the weapon an inert, unbalanced slab of mundane metal that cannot be attuned or used for magical combat.
    • If targeted damage reduces the hit point pool to zero, the artifact suffers permanent destruction, disintegrating into brittle cold-iron filings, obsidian shards, and extinguished ash.
  • Repair Procedures:
    • The lantern-blade cannot regenerate hit points through character rests, mundane weapon whetstones, or standard low-tier mending incantations.
    • While damaged or broken, the weapon confers no passive bonuses, skill boosts, or active magics until its hit point pool is completely restored to full.
    • Restoring the weapon requires a master artisan possessing proficiencies in Magical Metallurgy / Weaponsmithing, Gem-Cutting / Lapidary, Daoist Spirit-Weaving, and High-Tier Transmutation Artifice at a minimum skill level of 10 (base 5 plus 5 for Tier 5).
    • Repairs must be executed within a consecrated atelier powered by closed-circuit steam conduits balancing elemental fire and elemental water, utilizing a pneumatic steam-hammer, an arcane annealing forge, and an alchemical infusion table.
    • Required restoration materials include refined darksteel ingots tempered in lunar mineral oil, replacement shards of volcanic obsidian glass, a vial of pure ethereal wisp essence captured from an enchanted sky-grove, a drop of martyr’s blood to re-consecrate the defiance runes, and cold-drawn aether-silver wire to re-solder the severed sensory conduits.
    • Once all structural hit points are fully restored and the material lattice is aligned via the Mind’s Eye, the avatar must repeat the one-minute focused meditative recitation while holding the blade aloft beneath the direct light of Gaialilith’s crescent moon to restore full attunement and awaken its dormant matrices.

Acquisition and Commerce of Ocular Sovereign’s Resilient Lantern-Blade 841

  • Methods of Acquisition:
    • Master Tier 5 Consolidation: An artisan possessing master proficiencies in Magical Metallurgy / Weaponsmithing, Gem-Cutting / Lapidary, Daoist Spirit-Weaving, and High-Tier Transmutation Artifice at a minimum skill level of 10 can synthesize the five prerequisite Tier 1 items: Enchanted Training Weapons, ExtraHidden Shackle of the Abused, Shadowveil Spectacles, Transmutation Stone, and Wisps Lantern. The process requires a consecrated atelier powered by closed-circuit steam conduits balancing elemental fire and elemental water, a wagon-sized Tier 5 mana crystal anchored beneath the hearth to absorb volatile resonance, payment of the mandatory 15% consolidation fee based on the combined value of all five ingredient items, and a successful crafting roll avoiding a natural 1 on a d20.
    • Excavating Sunken Sky-Citadel Inquisitions: The blade can be recovered from the sealed, pressurized armory vaults of floating penitentiary fortresses or fallen high-chancery academies that crashed into cloud trenches during the ancient civil wars across the 73 sovereign island nations. These vaults are guarded by lingering spectral inquisitors, darkness-shrouded wards, and pneumatic pressure traps that require keen perception and magical sight to bypass.
    • Disarming an Apostate Arch-Warden: Avatars may claim the weapon by defeating a renegade judicial-sentinel, fallen inquisitor-general, or rogue spellblade-instructor who carries it openly. Because sovereign-grade martial relics risk fracturing or dispersing energetic backlash if their attuned master is slain outright in violent combat, the avatar must disarm the wielder, shatter their martial stance, or secure an unconditional submission through an honorable tribunal duel.
    • Bestowal by the Grand Conclave of Gaialilith: A high synod of lunar magistrates, temple elders, and grand masters of the martial academies may bestow the weapon upon an avatar who exposes a sprawling shadow-conspiracy, unmasks a treasonous high-tier illusionist within the imperial courts, or liberates an enslaved population without causing civilian casualties.

      • When pursuing elusive duelists across narrow catwalks, the bearer channels Matter-Shift Blade Strike; slashing the air transmutes the blade’s leading edge into a 50-foot wave of dense liquid metal that hardens across opposing propellers and glider wings, shearing through rigging and shredding mechanical controls.
      • Confronting heavily armored aerial shock-troopers, the wielder triggers Alchemical Mimicry Matrix to turn the saber’s edge into razor-dense diamond-adamantine, cleaving through steam-carapace plates without losing momentum.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • When struck by boarding canister-shot or shock-pikes, the cold-iron pommel triggers Defiant Retaliatory Slash, turning the impact’s kinetic trauma into an immediate counter-slash that knocks the boarder overboard while stacking bonus damage for subsequent swings.
      • Amid dense high-altitude fog banks or cloud squalls laden with hostile obscuring magics, the lantern’s 60-foot aura dispels magical darkness completely, preventing ambushers from cutting steering lines unseen.
      • If a companion is cornered near the edge of the gondola, the wielder executes a non-lethal strike against the attacker; the Protective Martial Discipline absorbs the blow into pure kinetic exhaustion, knocking the enemy unconscious while wrapping the wielder in a protective force barrier.
  • Imperial Council Chambers, Tribunal Auditoriums, and Chancery Rotundas:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • During contentious judicial tribunals where corrupt chancellors hide behind magical body-doubles or altered identities, the wielder unsheathes the blade; the Veilbreaker Vision shines through illusory disguises, exposing the impostor’s actual face to the court.
      • Confronting an unrepentant conspirator who attempts an armed escape from the witness box, the wielder invokes Burst of Disorienting Retribution; a flash of prismatic light and a screaming chorus of past suffering echoes off the stone arches, dropping the fleeing conspirator and their guards into weeping confusion.
      • To apprehend treasonous noble duelists without provoking blood feuds, the bearer relies on Protective Martial Discipline to disarm, sweep, and render hostile courtiers unconscious with non-lethal strikes, converting the impact into personal defensive wards.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • If an assassin detonates an arcane darkness sphere or smoke canister in the crowded hall, the Prismatic Wisp instantly burns away the shadow, illuminating poisoned blades and hidden cross-draws across the auditorium.
      • When trapped in a hall filled with concealed traps or secret sliding panels behind the tapestries, the optical obsidian conduits along the blade’s spine reveal the exact trip-mechanisms and hollow walls, allowing the user to guide allies away from crossfire.
      • When facing hostile sorcerers casting mind-control or fear hexes, the passive Resilience of the Unbroken Martyr renders the bearer immune to psychological panic, projecting an aura of defiance that stabilizes the composure of allied scribes.
  • Failing Terraced Communes, Blighted Valleys, and Rural Farmlands:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • Against subterranean burrowing vermin or corrupted blight-beasts hiding beneath the topsoil, the wielder drives the blade downward to trigger Matter-Shift Blade Strike; the weapon transmutes the earth into a 50-foot furrow of churning, razor-sharp shale and pressurized steam, forcing hidden burrowers to the surface and shattering their chitin.
      • Facing mercenary pillagers who exploit magical illusions to simulate overwhelming troop numbers, the wielder sweeps the blade outward; the caged wisp dissolves the phantom horde, exposing the small raiding squad and leaving them blinded by the prismatic glare.
      • Against beast-masters driving maddened draft animals, the bearer uses Burst of Disorienting Retribution to overwhelm the predators’ predatory instincts with a sudden burst of starlight and harmonic ringing, stunning them into submission without causing permanent slaughter.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • In parched terrace fields set ablaze by rogue elemental fire, the wielder plants the blade to activate Aura of the Sovereign Revealer; the expanding 50-foot dome quells ongoing hostile evocation fires, wards rural defenders with a +5 bonus to physical and mental checks, and punishes encroaching raiders with radiant feedback.
      • While moving through mudslides, irrigation sinkholes, and collapsing terrace walls, the wielder switches the blade’s Alchemical Mimicry Matrix to dense granite-like stone, wedging the weapon into crumbling masonry to serve as an unbreakable anchor for trapped villagers.
      • When escorting panic-stricken farmers through hostile terrain, the wisp’s bright illumination and soothing herbal aroma of dew and wild basil dampens communal hysteria and bolsters collective morale.
  • Sub-Sluice Drain Channels, Steam Foundries, and Industrial Harbor Boroughs:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • In pitch-black sewer junctions and soot-choked pipe tunnels, syndicate enforcers often rely on ambush corners and darkness; the wielder advances behind the lantern-blade’s 180-foot combined radiance, illuminating waterlogged catwalks and exposing snipers hiding in iron overhead rafters.
      • Against illegal steam-constructs or armored boiler-golems, the bearer uses Alchemical Mimicry Matrix to tune the blade to heavy, heat-hardened adamantine, slicing through pressurized steam lines, brass pistons, and hydraulic conduits with effortless precision.
      • In tight industrial hallways, the wielder activates Matter-Shift Blade Strike; the blade erupts into a high-pressure jet of superheated steam and molten metal shards, sweeping the corridor clear and welding iron doors shut behind retreating saboteurs.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • When targeted by hidden tripwire-triggered pipe traps, the obsidian optical conduits trace the faint mechanical linkages through grime and rust, enabling the wielder to sever the trigger mechanism safely before anyone steps forward.
      • In close-quarters melee against harbor syndicate thugs wielding lead saps and iron crowbars, each strike taken by the wielder feeds the Resilience of the Unbroken Martyr, building an escalating damage counter and granting an immediate Defiant Retaliatory Slash to retaliate against flanking brawlers.
      • If poisonous fumes, corrosive boiler leaks, or swamp gas flare in the undercroft, the wisp’s pure aura burns away noxious vapors within the immediate light radius, preventing asphyxiation.
  • Primeval Swamps, Ancient Mangroves, and Sunken Ley-Ruins:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • Against submerged ambush predators, chameleon hydras, or sunken mire-trolls utilizing murky water for natural camouflage, the Veilbreaker Vision projects clear silhouette outlines through the black water, denying the beasts any surprise advantage.
      • Confronting spectral remnants, drowned inquisitor-wraiths, or necrotic spirits that resist physical blades, the wielder uses Alchemical Mimicry Matrix to shift the saber’s edge into consecrated silver and pure quartz, cutting through ethereal forms as though they were flesh.
      • To breach ancient, waterlogged stone vaults sealed by illusory wards, the bearer touches the ricasso stone to the doorway; the transmutation power liquefies ancient calcified mortar and reveals hidden release latches buried behind false stonework.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • In deep, treacherous peat bogs riddled with false mossy crusts and bottomless silt sinks, the blade’s obsidian conduits reflect structural load lines, identifying solid submerged roots and stable stone paths through the mire.
      • When surrounded by swarming bog-wisps or parasitic swamp leeches that inflict psychic dread, the passive Resilience of the Unbroken Martyr negates all incoming fear effects and shields the party against psychic shockwaves.
      • If surrounded by a coordinated ambush of swamp lurkers in total darkness, the wielder plants the weapon to raise the Aura of the Sovereign Revealer; the 50-foot luminous dome turns the stagnant swamp water radiant, strips the lurkers of their murky concealment, and strikes down any creature that lashes out at resting allies.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Sight: The moment your grip tightens and intent flows into the hilt, the cage-bound ethereal wisp ignites from a dormant glimmer into a swirling, incandescent vortex of sapphire, emerald, violet, and molten gold. Twin beams of prismatic light course up the obsidian-glass optical channels along the blade’s spine, projecting razor-sharp geometric sightlines directly into your field of vision. Shadows across the environment turn translucent, invisible entities resolve into luminous, heat-rimmed silhouettes, and the subtle shimmer of magical illusions frays like burning gauze. At the ricasso, the transmutation stone pulses with a deep, elemental amber glow, sending rippling veins of light across the cold-iron fuller.
    • Sound: A high, melodic chime rings out from the wisp cage, harmonizing with the distant, haunting howl of mountain winds and the solemn rustle of ancient grove leaves. Beneath this ethereal melody lies a low, resonant metallic hum—like an iron anvil struck deep underground—intercut by the faint, muffled crackle of electrical static and the distant, rhythmic chanting of judicial mantras.
    • Touch: The shadow-silk hilt wrap warms to an invigorating, fevered pulse against your palm, while the spiked iron pommel-ring sends a cold, prickling shock of phantom pain up your forearm—a visceral phantom echo of shattered chains that sharpens your physical focus. Simultaneously, the blade’s center of mass seems to dissolve into feather-light balance, shifting effortlessly as the transmutation matrix aligns with your muscle memory.
    • Smell: A sudden, crisp wash of rain-drenched clover and sweet morning dew floods your nostrils, immediately sharpened by a biting whiff of lightning ozone, cold forge-iron, and the faint, bitter musk of scorched ash.
    • Taste: A subtle, sweet mineral flavor coats your tongue like melted glacier water, abruptly underscored by a dry, bitter metallic tang of cold iron and bile whenever intentional malice, hidden venom, or magical deceit is pointed directly at you.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Veilbreaker True-Sight & Spatial Geometry): Your consciousness effortlessly maps the three-dimensional architecture of the surrounding 60 feet. Secret alcoves, hollow floor tiles, hidden lock tumblers, and subterranean stress points outline themselves in your Mind’s Eye as vivid, glowing schematics.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Alchemical Transmutation Resonance): You intuitively feel the molecular and elemental density of every substance within reach. Stone, steel, wood, and flesh register as distinct tactile vibrations, allowing you to anticipate structural weaknesses and immediately know which elemental state the blade should mimic to cleave through them.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Echoes of the Martyr’s Resolve): You perceive the emotional scars and hidden suffering of nearby creatures. Latent fear, repressed malice, and lingering trauma resonate within your chest as distinct pressure waves, giving you an instinctual read on an adversary’s psychological breaking point.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Magical Aura Spectrum): Ambient mana flows become visible as undulating, chromatic ribbons drifting through the air. You sense the exact schools, power levels, and directional vectors of active spells and lingering wards before they discharge.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Sight: Onlookers see the darksteel saber flare with a breathtaking, four-colored aurora that casts sweeping, kaleidoscopic geometric patterns across the walls, floor, and ceiling. The twin obsidian conduits on the blade trace thin lines of lavender-and-silver starlight into the air as the weapon moves. The wielder’s eyes seem to catch the reflection of the wisp, gleaming with a cold, piercing luminescence that stares unblinking through darkness and solid cover.
    • Sound: Observers hear a crystalline, bell-like ringing that echoes off the surrounding architecture, layered over an ominous, low-frequency iron vibration that vibrates the floorboards and rattles loose metal buckle plates.
    • Touch: Those within 15 feet feel a crisp drop in air temperature accompanied by an invigorating, cool breeze that carries the scent of mountain meadows, immediately followed by an unnatural static charge that raises the fine hairs on their necks and arms.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Aura of Sovereign Retribution): Foes in the vicinity feel an immediate, suffocating moral dread settle across their shoulders. The wielder appears towering, unyielding, and impossible to deceive, while buried personal shames and past transgressions claw at the edges of the observer’s thoughts, provoking involuntary trembling and hesitation.
  • Positives:
    • Pierces total darkness, magical darkness, invisible camouflage, and complex illusions instantaneously without requiring dedicated concentration checks.
    • Heightens tactile, spatial, and martial reflexes, granting optimal strike calibration and absolute immunity to fear and demoralization.
    • Reveals hidden traps, structural flaws, and secret doors in real-time, making ambush and environmental hazard null and void.
    • The weapon’s alchemical resonance allows seamless, instantaneous adaptation to exploit the physical weaknesses and elemental resistances of opponents.
  • Negatives:
    • The brilliant, swirling four-color illumination and melodic wisp-hum make visual, acoustic, and magical stealth completely impossible while active.
    • The sudden influx of multi-layered sensory data—spatial schematics, emotional echoes, elemental densities, and mana currents—can induce brief sensory vertigo in wielders lacking disciplined focus.
    • The phantom feedback of past torment pulsing from the cold-iron pommel can exacerbate lingering emotional trauma or stir violent, retributive anger if the wielder loses composure.
    • The pungent aroma of fresh dew, wild clover, and ozone lingers heavily in enclosed spaces, leaving a distinct olfactory trail for trackers with acute senses.

Master Tier 5 Consolidation: Forging of Ocular Sovereign’s Resilient Lantern-Blade 841

  • Items Merged:
  • Additional Materials Needed:
    • 1 Tier 5 Magic Crystal (a wagon-sized crystalline mana accumulator anchored directly beneath the atelier hearth to absorb and regulate volatile energetic backlash during consolidation)
    • 12 ounces of refined darksteel ingots (tempered in lunar mineral oil for high tensile durability and shadow conductivity)
    • 6 ounces of cold iron (harvested from ancient tribunal gibbets to reinforce retributive matrices)

    • 2 strands of shadow-spun silk (treated with conductive charcoal paste for hilt binding)
    • 1 drop of martyr’s blood (voluntarily offered to re-consecrate the defiance runes on the cold-iron pommel)
    • 3 drams of consecrated lunar silver flux (for precision soldering of optical conduits)
    • 1 vial of starlight dew (distilled under Gaialilith’s crescent moon to balance alchemical volatility)
  • Tools Required:
    • Closed-Circuit Steam Forge and Annealing Kiln (regulated by balanced elemental fire and elemental water conduits to eliminate ambient acoustic or tectonic vibration)
    • High-Tension Crystal Channeling Regulator (a heavy brass-and-quartz conduit rod used to siphon and stabilize mana from the Tier 5 accumulator)
    • Multi-Chamber Ceramic Consolidation Crucible (inscribed with five-fold containment wards to prevent phase rejection between mineral, glass, metal, and ethereal substrates)
    • Diamond-Tipped Lapidary Wheel and Pneumatic Burin (for grinding, cutting, and engraving optical channels and runic matrices)
    • Arcane Infusion Table with Spirit-Sealing Bell (to capture and anchor the ethereal wisp safely during forge-welding)
    • Jeweler’s Loupe, Silver Scribing Stylus, and Calibrated Balance Scales (for micro-alignment of sensory conduits and transmutation nodes)
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Master Magical Metallurgy / Weaponsmithing: Skill level 10 (base 5 plus 5 for Tier 5 consolidation)
    • Master Gem-Cutting / Lapidary Artifice: Skill level 10
    • Master Daoist Spirit-Weaving and Technomancy: Skill level 10
    • Master High-Tier Transmutation Artifice: Skill level 10
    • Mind’s Eye Deep Focus (mastery over internal cognitive equilibrium to integrate non-lethal discipline, trauma-forged retribution, deception-piercing optics, elemental matter manipulation, and wisp illumination into a single physical form)
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Pressurize and balance the atelier’s closed-circuit steam forge, harmonizing the elemental fire and elemental water boilers until all seismic flutter and acoustic resonance register zero.
    • Anchor the wagon-sized Tier 5 Magic Crystal beneath the forge floor and engage the high-tension channeling regulator to cast a pressurized containment ward around the crucible.
    • Dismantle and extract the vital components from the sacrificial Tier 1 items: strip the protective warding runes from the Enchanted Training Weapons; harvest the cold-iron links, defiance runes, and agony-scars from the ExtraHidden Shackle of the Abused; unseat the obsidian glass lenses and twilight crystal nodes from the Shadowveil Spectacles; secure the runic core of the Transmutation Stone; and transfer the ethereal wisp from the Wisps Lantern into the spirit-sealing bell on the infusion table.
    • Place the darksteel ingots, cold-iron fragments, starlight dew, and lunar silver flux into the consolidation crucible, then introduce the warding runes and the transmutation matrix.
    • Vent pressurized elemental steam into the chamber while reciting the high-tier consolidation verses, drawing mana from the Tier 5 crystal to fuse the metals and alchemical stones into a molten, chromatic magma of shifting sapphire, emerald, violet, and gold.
    • Roll a d20 to verify the structural and metaphysical stability of the synthesis: a roll of 2 through 19 secures perfect consolidation; a roll of 20 imparts an unintended sovereign resonance; a roll of 1 causes catastrophic containment failure, destroying all ingredients.
    • Engage the pneumatic forge-press to strike the molten alloy into an indivisible, single-edged saber blade with an integral ricasso and an openwork crossguard cage, quenching the piece in lunar mineral oil to freeze the crystalline lattice.
    • Grind the extracted obsidian glass into dual, polished optical conduits using the diamond-tipped lapidary wheel, embedding them flush along the spine of the blade to channel ambient light directly toward the hilt.
    • Mount the runic transmutation core into the ricasso socket, securing it with fine cold-drawn silver conduit wires to establish instantaneous material-shifting pathways throughout the metal.
    • Transfer the captured ethereal wisp from the spirit-sealing bell into the forged crossguard cage, hermetically sealing the containment bars with lunar silver flux and etherium lacquer.
    • Form the terminal pommel into a spiked, open iron ring forged from the shackle links, anoint the ring with the drop of martyr’s blood, and chase microscopic repentance mantras around the circumference using the silver burin.
    • Wrap the grip tightly with the conductive shadow-spun silk, ensuring seamless contact between the wielder’s palm and the internal alchemical conduit running from the pommel to the blade.
    • Verify the full integration of the optical, martial, retributive, and alchemical circuits via the Mind’s Eye, settle the mandatory 15% consolidation fee based on the combined market value of all five Tier 1 ingredients, and complete attunement by performing the one-minute focused meditative recitation while holding the blade aloft beneath the direct light of Gaialilith’s crescent moon.

Laughing Glass-Basket Sword, Five Little Cry-Things, False Pig-King, and Iron Chain Which Struck Moon in Nose

In the day before the first count of days, when the white round mother of all water-skies Gaialilith had not yet tied her twenty-and-twelve hair-ropes around the world, the earth was not flat like a board, neither was it round like an egg, but was shaped like a great turnip full of black holes and boiling soup. The wind was an angry uncle who threw rocks at children, and the dark was so thick that if a man put his thumb into his mouth, he could not tell if it was his own thumb or a dried sausage belonging to a dead dog.

In that unwashed hour, the high iron ships of the false pig-lords did fly without birds. They had giant bronze bellies that drank black grease and coughed burning mud into the barley terraces of the low people. The Great Chancellor of the Cloud-Saddle, whose head was as bald as a copper pot and who had three gold teeth set into his lower jaw to bite the ears of orphans, sat on a chair made of melted plowshares. He held in his fat fist a scroll of dead calf-leather seventy rods long, upon which was written with a crooked brass needle: “The sky belongs to the fat; the dirt belongs to the thin; whoever does not give eight buckets of sweet barley to the boiler-men shall have his thumbs pinched off with hot iron tongs.”

Down in the low ditch, where the red iron steam-tubes wept warm water upon the wild cabbage, lived five poor wanderers whose names are scratched on split stones and old fish-skins.

The first was a broken training-master named El-Doran, who carried a wooden lath painted with blue river-mud. Whenever he struck an apprentice, the boy felt no pain, but only a tickle in the ribs, and shouted, “I am a hero!” But when a real wild boar came from the thicket, the boar chewed El-Doran’s wooden lath into toothpicks, bit him upon the hip, and chased him up a crabapple tree, where he sat weeping until the stars came out.

The second was a small escaped iron-drudge named Karun, who had around his left bone a heavy shackle of cold ditch-metal. The shackle was so cruel that it bit the flesh until the bone showed white like peeled garlic. Whenever Karun wept, the iron growled like a dog in a box, saying: “Hate the whip; bite the master!” Yet whenever Karun tried to strike the overseer, the iron dragged his wrist into the ditch, and the overseers kicked him in the small of the back until he spat black clods.

The third was a thin owl-man of the stone-ruins named Sel-Vandir, who had tied over his nose two round pieces of black volcanic glass wrapped in spider-threads. When he looked through these black stones, he could see the invisible mice stealing grain under the floorboards, and he could see if a woman’s smile was painted on top of a toothache. But the black glass made his eyes bleed salt water, and after three turnings of the sundial, he would stumble into horse-troughs and cry: “All the world is a black well full of grinning masks; give me bread or push me into the ditch!”

The fourth was a dirty pot-scrubber named Miri, who kept in her grease-rag a smooth, round egg of gray river-pebble. This stone had a strange, foolish throat; when she squeezed it and thought of tin, it became soft like sheep-fat; when she thought of lead, it grew as heavy as an ox-skull; but whenever she tried to pay the baker with it, the stone turned back into a wet river-rock in the baker’s palm, and the baker would beat her ears with a flat cedar shovel.

The fifth was a blind shepherd-wench named Oona, who carried a cracked wicker cage inside of which lived an Echoing Wisp—a tiny ball of sky-fire that laughed like silver bells and changed its coat from water-blue to grass-green to goat-blood red. The wisp gave a great, jumping light that made the darkest cavern look like noon, but it sang so loudly of old mountain weddings and dead uncles that every tiger, wild dog, and night-skulker for forty leagues would come running to see what was making such a foolish noise in the brambles.

One black night, when Gaialilith was hiding her face behind a blanket of bitter soot, the Chancellor’s iron cloud-barge descended upon the village like a falling barn. The boiler-piston went chug-thump-whistle, and the lead-soldiers climbed down rope-ladders with barbed iron flails. They chained the village mothers to the axle-trees and rolled sixty hogsheads of barley into their copper belly.

The five wanderers hid inside a dry culvert beneath the steam-distillery.

El-Doran looked at his soft wooden practice-stick and said: “My wood makes no blood; it only pats the enemy like an aunt.”

Karun shook his bleeding wrist and said: “My shackle only remembers the boot; when I bite, I only bite my own tongue.”

Sel-Vandir wiped the black glass with his sleeve and wept: “My dark-eyes show me that the Chancellor has thirty-and-two false hearts made of tallow, but my shins are bruised because I cannot see the stone before my foot.”

Miri held her gray pebble and sighed: “My stone wants to be everything, but it is nothing longer than the duration of a sneeze.”

Oona’s lantern hummed a cheerful song about a pig who lost his boots, and she cried: “My little dancing fire lights up the butcher’s knife, but it gives me no shield to turn its edge.”

Then there came from the deep hearth of the lower copper-works a great clanking of iron clogs. Out stepped the ancient Mother-Smith of the Under-Sluice, whose beard was made of curled brass shavings and whose right shoulder was three handbreadths higher than her left from sixty winters of swinging the big wedge-hammer. She spat into the grease-trough and yelled through her breathing-leather:

Why do you sit in the pig-wash and make small squeaks like mice in a lard-tub? Five broken bones make a limp dog; but weld five bones into one thick shin, and you may kick the iron kettle off the stove! Give me the play-stick! Give me the slave-iron! Give me the blind-glass! Give me the foolish pebble! Give me the singing fire-bug! We shall throw them into the big iron belly of the two-fire steam-crucible, where the water-pipe fights the flame-pipe until they make white milk-smoke!”

Beneath the stone floor sat a great white crystal as big as a hay-wagon, which hummed with a sound that made the hair on the smith’s arms stand up like barley-awns. The smith took the five items with long bronze pincers. She struck the lever with her wooden heel.

The elemental fire-valve coughed red grease; the elemental water-pipe screamed like a scalded goat; the pressure-dial spun around three times and broke its glass face with a sharp clack. The wagon-sized white stone beneath the floor drank the wild, boiling lightning so the stone house would not fly into the stars. Into the roaring pot went the protective runes of the wooden play-stick, the rusted cold-iron shackle links drenched in seventy years of prisoner-sweat, the polished obsidian shards from the mountain-throat, the runic egg of changing mud, and the singing wisp inside its wicker nest.

The Mother-Smith seized the great steam-hammer chain. Whang-crash! Whang-crash! Forty times forty the bronze head came down upon the anvil. The stink of the shop was terrible: it smelled of burnt wet wool, sweet honey-clover, lightning-ozone, old prison-straw, and the sharp bitter soup of tears.

When the steam-cock was opened and the white cloud blew out into the cabbage patch, there was no longer a wooden lath, nor a slave-band, nor spectacles, nor a pebble, nor a basket.

There lay upon the anvil a single, long, curved tooth of black iron and darksteel. Along its back ran two shining troughs of polished black volcanic glass that caught the light like deep water. In its throat, where the blade met the fist, sat an open cage of welded wire, and inside that cage the four-colored wisp danced and whirled, laughing with a voice of silver trumpets. Above the cage was set the transmutation stone, smooth as a gull’s egg and shining like wet butter. And at the tail of the grip was forged an open iron ring with sharp teeth—the old slave-collar beaten into a circle of hard defiance.

The slate says here: The apprentice Karun, whose wrist was raw, seized the hilt with his two bloody hands. The weapon did not burn him; it gave a great shudder like a horse smelling water. The five little cry-things were dead; the one great shouting blade was born.

Karun did not run to hide. He leaped out of the culvert into the square.

The Sky-Chancellor sat upon his brass throne on the upper deck of the great airship, sixty cubits above the roofs, holding his parchment and laughing: “Whip the dogs until the wagons are full!”

Karun swung the weapon through the air. The Ocular Sovereign’s Resilient Lantern-Blade 841 woke from its iron sleep.

First, the wisp inside the cage flared with the brilliance of four noon-suns—blue, green, purple, and molten yellow. The light shot through the sixty-foot dark; it struck the Chancellor’s cloud-barge; it burned away the black smoke-screens; it dissolved the illusory phantom dragons that the ship’s magicians had painted upon the clouds. The optical troughs of black glass caught the glare and threw two sharp beams into Karun’s eyes; suddenly, he did not see the iron plates of the ship, but saw through them to the brass boilers, the hidden powder-bins, and the shivering knees of the fat lords hiding under their velvet cushions.

The Chancellor shouted: “Loose the spring-bows! Shoot the dirt-boy!”

Forty iron bolts flew from the ship’s side. But Karun held the blade before his brow. The Harmonic Elemental Concordance and the Protective Martial Discipline woke within the steel. The arrows did not pierce his skin; as they touched the four-colored light, their iron points turned to soft tallow, their ash-shafts turned to boiled asparagus, and they dropped into the mud without scratching a single fly upon his arm.

Then Karun gripped the transmutation core with his thumb and shouted a word in the old high tongue that makes the rocks sweat. He swung the blade toward the sky.

The Matter-Shift Blade Strike tore out of the darksteel tip. It was not an iron sword; it became a fifty-foot spout of boiling red iron, mixed with flying flint-shards and superheated steam. It struck the iron rudder of the Chancellor’s flagship. The rudder melted like lard on a hot skillet; the bronze steering-cables snapped with a noise like harp-strings; and the great flying boat turned around and around like a beetle dropped into a bowl of hot porridge.

The ship struck the muddy ditch with a mountain-splitting thud, burying its copper snout four spears deep into the wild parsnip patch.

The lead-soldiers scrambled out of the broken hatches, raising their spiked poleaxes to chop the villagers into stew-meat.

Karun did not hack off their heads. He turned the flat of the blade and struck the lead-captain upon the breastplate. The Protective Martial Discipline of the old training-stick surged through the darksteel: the blow broke no bone, cut no flesh, and spilled no red drop, but a great wave of heavy fatigue struck the captain’s chest. The air left his belly with a loud whoosh; his knees turned to cold suet; his poleaxe fell from his fingers; and he lay upon the cabbages, snoring like a fat grandmother after beer-day.

Seeing their captain sleeping in the dirt, the remaining sixty mercenaries drew their curved daggers to swarm Karun from behind.

Then Karun thrust the spiked pommel-ring toward the open sky and invoked the Burst of Disorienting Retribution.

The four-colored wisp shrieked like ten thousand temple-horns; the spiked ring of the abused slave flared with the cold, red light of seventy years of forgotten whippings. A blinding wave of starlight and ringing sound rolled across the cabbage field.

The mercenaries did not strike. They dropped their knives; they clutched their ears; they fell upon their faces in the mud and began to howl with great weeping. Every man saw before his eyes the faces of the children he had robbed; they saw the burned cottages; they smelled the smoke of their own wicked fires. The Sky-Chancellor crawled out of his broken brass cabin on his hands and knees, his fine silk robes smeared with duck-weed, blubbering and pulling his own ears, screaming: “I forged the weight-stone! I cheated the barley-clerk! I drowned my cousin in the wash-tub! Take my gold teeth, only turn off the laughing glass-light!”

Karun walked through the weeping host. The blade in his hand smelled sweet, like morning clover and wild mint washed by clean rain, though the fuller still hummed with the hard, cold judgment of the anvil.

He did not build an iron throne. He did not hang the Chancellor from the yardarm. He tapped each fallen lord upon the shoulder with the flat of the non-lethal steel, binding their limbs with the soft weight of exhaustion until the imperial magistrates could come from the high capital with lawful chains.

And when the sun rose round and yellow over the mountain-trench, the people dragged the sixty hogsheads of barley back to their stone granaries, while the broken pieces of the flying ship were beaten by the village blacksmiths into scythes, hoes, and kettle-hooks that served three generations of plowmen.

Karun climbed to the high terrace where the crescent stone of Gaialilith looked down upon the sea. He held the lantern-blade high until the moon caught the twin obsidian lines upon its spine, speaking the ancient closing verse: “The chain that is endured becomes the iron of the sword; the eye that weeps becomes the lens of truth; the wood that spares the child becomes the shield of the host.”

The moral of the story is: The tyrant who builds his throne upon the weeping of the weak only forges the very iron that shall one day measure his own wickedness; for true mastery over the blade is not found in the fury that spills the blood of the foolish, but in the enduring resolve that sees through all false masks, turns aside the stroke of vengeance without slaughter, and uses the fire of ancient suffering to light the path of justice for the humble.
