We must make the circle of the holding-back.”

The Many-Thinkers made the writing of the circle. They made the numbers up to the four-thousands and the two-hundreds and the seventy-ones. This was the circle of the day-night kissing. But the circle was too heavy for the meat-heads of the guard-men. When the guard-men put the circle on their skin, their meat-heads became the screaming-fires. They could not hold the kissing of the day-night because their inside-waters were too angry and loud.

The Head-Thinker said, “We must find the heavy-quiet. We must find the water of the sleep-mind, or the circle will break the breath of the world.”

They sent the Guard of the Deep Hole. He was a man who walked where the light forgets to look. He walked to the Valley of the Wild-Flowers, where the wind smells like the sweet-dust. In this place lived the Tree-Man. The Tree-Man did not speak with his mouth. He spoke with his hands holding the air. The Guard of the Deep Hole asked for the heavy-quiet.

The Tree-Man nodded his head-bone. He pointed to the bug of the star-wings. This was the bug that makes the no-crunch sound. The Tree-Man took the dropped wings of the bug. He took the purple sleep-flowers and the yellow dream-flowers. He boiled them in the warm-water. He put the sweet-spit of the buzzing-fly inside. He gave the water of the calm-head to the Guard of the Deep Hole.

But the Guard said, “The water of the calm-head is too soft. If I put it in the clay-cup, the writing of the kissing day-night will shatter the clay. If I put it in the iron-cup, the iron will rust into the sad-dust. What holds the heavy-quiet and the loud-circle?”

The Tree-Man pointed to the sky-dirt. He pointed to the islands that float like the dead wood on the sea. “You must find the stone of the sneezing sky,” the hands of the Tree-Man said. “The blue stone that holds the wind.”

The Guard of the Deep Hole climbed the empty-air. He jumped from the high-mountain to the bottom of the floating dirt. He walked into the hot-mouth of the dead fire-mountain. He searched in the dark until his fingers felt the cold-breeze that came from the rock. This was the wind-stone. It was blue like the morning-eye.

He took the wind-stone back to the Many-Thinkers. The Many-Thinkers were happy-weeping. They brought the men of the wind-shaping. The men of the wind-shaping made the tiny-tornados with their breath-pipes. They pushed the tiny-tornados into the wind-stone. The stone did not break. The inside of the stone turned to the sparkling-dust and blew away. The stone was now an empty belly.

They poured the water of the calm-head into the belly of the wind-stone. Because the stone was the sneezing sky, the water did not sit. It danced. It made the endless turning-shape of the purple and the black. It was the heavy-quiet dancing with the wind.

Then came the men of the star-scratching. They took the juice of the dead star and the juice of the deep ocean-hole. They scratched the circle of the four-two-seven-one on the outside of the wind-stone belly. They had to scratch with the two hands at the same time. One hand held the burning-light, one hand held the crushing-dark. If they blinked their eye-balls, the stone would become the exploding-death. They did not blink. They scratched the circle. They sealed the belly with the invisible tree-blood.

When the scratching was done, the wind-stone became the Neck-Stone of the Half-Darkness. They tied it to the strings made from the moon-hair.

The Guard of the Deep Hole put the moon-hair around his breath-pipe. Immediately, the loud-noises of the world were eaten. The Guard could not hear the speaking of the Many-Thinkers. He could not hear the hitting of his own walking-bones on the floor. He felt his heavy-meat become the feather-meat. He stood on the air. He did not fall. His mind was the flat lake. The dancing water in the stone told his mind-eyes where the danger was before the danger knew it was the danger.

Then the sickness of the sky broke open.

The Mouth of the End came down from the above-place. It was not a beast of the eating-teeth; it was the beast of the breaking-law. It threw the spears of the wrong-color at the islands that forgot how to sink. The spears were made of the loud-fire and the heavy-shadow.

The Guard of the Deep Hole did not run. He walked on the empty-air toward the Mouth of the End. The Mouth of the End threw the spear of the loud-fire at his chest-body. The spear hit the Neck-Stone.

There was no sound. The loud-fire was swallowed by the scratching of the four-two-seven-one. The heavy-quiet of the bug-water calmed the fire. Then, the stone spit the fire back out. But it was not the fire. It was the opposite-fire. It was the blinding dark-cold. It hit the Mouth of the End and made the black-and-white flower-ashes fall like the snow. The Mouth of the End was confused in its mind-meat. It threw the spear of the heavy-shadow. The Neck-Stone ate the shadow and spit out the burning-light.

The Guard of the Deep Hole danced on the wind. He jumped the three-times jump. He did not sweat the fear-water because his head was the flat lake. The Mouth of the End could not break the kissing of the day-night. The Mouth of the End choked on the opposite-spit and became the nothing-flower.

The sickness of the sky was cured. The islands did not fall. But the Guard of the Deep Hole did not walk back to the Many-Thinkers. The heavy-quiet was too loud in his head. The kissing of the day-night pulled him into the nothing-flower. He faded into the empty-air, leaving only the smell of the rain-stone and the sleep-flowers. The Many-Thinkers wrote this telling on the dirt-stones so the future-eyes would know the weight of the feather.

The moral of the story: He who holds the quiet water in the sneezing stone can swallow the angry sun, but he will also walk into the nothing-flower and not walk out.
