Lore: The creation of the Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304 is a tale of tragic betrayal, secret alliances, and the desperate pursuit of mastery over both the wild and the arcane. Long ago, a high-ranking member of the Order of Arcane Scholars was exiled due to political machinations orchestrated by rival factions within the royal courts. Stripped of their titles and forced into the unforgiving wilderness, this scholar sought refuge among the Sylvan Enclaves. There, they learned the silent, gliding ways of the forest from ancient druids and adopted the survival tactics of the elusive serpents that navigated the dense underbrush unseen.
Driven by a simmering, unquenchable anger over their unjust exile, the scholar eventually crossed paths with an ascetic disciple of the sage Vexan. The disciple recognized the scholar’s potent, seething rage and traded the secrets of channeling emotional fury into raw, physical power. Realizing that raw power and wilderness survival alone would not dismantle the political web of their enemies, the scholar returned to the bustling port cities in disguise, infiltrating the most elite courtesan guildhalls. By mastering the art of the delicate dance and the gathering of whispered secrets, the scholar accumulated enough blackmail and hidden knowledge to systematically ruin the rival factions.
To ensure their absolute dominance, the scholar performed a forbidden, highly volatile alchemical ritual. They took their original, shimmering academic vestments, the enchanted forest foliage that had hidden them in the wilds, the jagged, resentment-infused talismans that fueled their strength, and the gossiping silk ribbons of their courtesan days. Using a forge fueled by pure emotional resonance and arcane precision, these disparate artifacts were magically fused. The resulting creation was not a collection of gear, but a singular, seamless physical garment. The Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304 became a legendary artifact, worn by a figure who moved silently through both royal ballrooms and deadly dungeons, manipulating minds, unleashing arcane devastation, and tearing down physical barriers with the terrifying strength of pure, focused wrath.
Description: The Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304 is a single, seamlessly tailored longcoat that physically occupies only the torso of the wearer. The fabric is an impossible fusion of arcane silk and living, enchanted forest foliage that feels as weightless as moonlight yet possesses the durability of hardened leather. The material shimmers with a constant, hypnotic iridescence, shifting its coloration to flawlessly match the wearer’s surroundings, be it the shadows of a city alleyway or the vibrant greens of a jungle.
Woven directly into the fibers are sharp, jagged runes that pulse with a dark, smoldering red energy, contrasting sharply with the soft, ethereal blue and silver sigils of ancient scholarly magic that float just above the fabric’s surface. Small, ornate brass charms are integrated directly into the cuffs and collar, clinking soundlessly. When the wearer moves, the mantle leaves a faint, green afterglow that is instantly absorbed by the terrain, accompanied by a localized aura that smells of old parchment, fresh pine sap, and the smoky bitterness of a extinguished fire. To the touch, the garment fluctuates between a comforting, protective warmth and a tingling, electric chill that resonates with the wearer’s heartbeat.

Multiple Passives Magic:
- Resentful Shadow Camouflage: The wearer blends seamlessly into any natural or urban environment, gaining absolute silence in their movements. The fabric constantly adjusts its shimmering pattern to break up the wearer’s outline, while the latent anger within the threads fuels a perpetual physical augmentation, granting the wearer an unyielding, balanced posture and an intimidating, dominant presence in any social interaction.
- Omniscient Echo Weave: The fabric continuously absorbs the ambient whispers, secrets, and emotional vulnerabilities of every creature within a 60-foot radius. The wearer effortlessly remembers every intercepted secret and can intuitively sense the hidden resentments and fears of their enemies. This constant influx of data allows the wearer to perfectly anticipate social traps and exploit the psychological weaknesses of those around them without needing to roll for basic insight.
- Arcane-Elemental Bulwark: The ancient sigils fused into the living leaves act as a highly adaptive magical barrier. The wearer gains permanent resistance to two chosen elemental damage types (selected at the dawn of each day). The intense magical flow through the single garment acts as a flawless conduit, ensuring that the wearer’s offensive spells are propelled with maximum destructive force and pinpoint accuracy, unaffected by environmental interference.
Multiple Active Magics:
- Wrathful Symphony of Secrets (4 charges): The wearer commands the mantle to flare with dark, jagged energy and emit a mesmerizing, harmonious rustle filled with the targeted, weaponized secrets of those nearby. All enemies within a 30-foot radius must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. Those who fail are paralyzed by a mixture of supernatural charm and overwhelming psychological terror for 1 minute. Simultaneously, all allies within the radius are infused with the mantle’s residual strength, gaining 4d8 + Charisma modifier in temporary hit points and immunity to all fear effects for 1 hour.
- Tempest Surge (2 charges): By gripping the lapels of the mantle, the wearer releases the pent-up, smoldering rage stored within the garment’s runes. For 10 minutes, the wearer experiences a massive surge of raw, physical power combined with serpentine agility. They gain the ability to effortlessly break through reinforced physical barriers, their movement speed is doubled, and their physical melee attacks deal an additional 4d6 necrotic damage fueled by pure resentment.
- Arch-Scholar’s Retribution (1 charge): The wearer focuses the combined arcane history and emotional fury of the mantle into a single, devastating spell strike. The next spell cast by the wearer automatically functions as if cast with the maximum possible magical output for the wearer’s tier, completely ignoring any magical resistances the target might possess, while the caster remains entirely cloaked in a localized field of invisibility until the spell makes impact.
Specific Slot: Worn Item (Torso)
Item Hit Points and Disabling the Magic The Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304 possesses an internal magical lattice with a threshold of 200 Hit Points (HP). Because the physical material is indestructible by non-magical means, an attacker must specifically target the garment with magical attacks, enchanted weaponry, or concentrated dispelling forces to bypass its Armor Class. If the mantle absorbs enough targeted magical damage to reduce its 200 HP to zero, the item is not destroyed physically, but its magical bindings shatter. The iridescent shimmer dulls to a flat gray, the living foliage wilts, and the pulsing runes go dark. In this state, all passive and active magics are completely disabled, and the mantle functions merely as a mundane, non-magical coat until repaired.
Repairing the Item To restore the disabled magic of this Tier 4 merged artifact, the wearer must seek out a master enchanter or an advanced arcane tailor. The repair process cannot be completed with mundane sewing. The mantle must first be submerged in a restorative basin combining Essence of Stealth and Emotion-Infused Water to reawaken the dormant silk and foliage. The crafter must then use enchanted Moonstone Thread to re-stitch the invisible, severed arcane circuits throughout the fabric. Finally, the jagged, smoldering runes must be carefully re-inscribed using freshly distilled Resentment Essence Ink. The entire process requires several hours of uninterrupted focus and a significant channeling of high-level magical energy to permanently reignite the core enchantments.
The Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304 is a Tier 4 merged artifact, making its existence exceptionally rare and its acquisition highly perilous.
- Individuals seeking this item must frequently undertake dangerous expeditions into the ruins of fallen empires, navigating environments saturated with residual magic and lethal traps.
- It can be obtained by commissioning a master artisan and a high-tier enchanter capable of performing the highly volatile alchemical ritual required to merge the original four components into a single physical object.
- Acquisition often involves deciphering encrypted maps or ancient texts left behind by the exiled scholar who first created the garment, leading seekers to hidden vaults.
- The mantle may occasionally be claimed by defeating a powerful sentient creature or a rival avatar who has already secured the item and uses its destructive and manipulative capabilities.
When traded, the Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304 is never found in common markets. It is exchanged only in highly specialized and exclusive environments.

- Buyers must provide the correct ciphers, passphrases, and proof of funds to a network of intermediaries before they are ever permitted to view the item.
- The cost fluctuates based on the seller’s paranoia, the buyer’s negotiation skills, and the immediate demand for subterfuge, typically ranging from 9,000 to 9,800 Platinum pieces.
Sylvan Court Treasuries
- Hidden in the deepest, uncharted regions of ancient forests, these treasuries are maintained by elite circles of druids, rangers, and forest sentinels.
- The mantle is not openly displayed but is brought forth from the heart of a living tree only if the buyer’s intentions align with the preservation of the wild.
- Purchasing the item involves a ritualistic exchange where the buyer must demonstrate mastery over wilderness survival and an understanding of the balance between tranquility and wrath.
- The cost is usually 8,000 Platinum pieces, but it must be accompanied by a magically binding oath to protect a designated sacred grove or eradicate a specific threat to the natural order.
Elite Whispering Salons
- Found in the most opulent districts of high society within massive metropolises, these exclusive courtesan guildhalls disguise their artifact trade behind layers of aristocratic etiquette and lavish gatherings.
- The mantle is sold during private, invite-only events in secluded, heavily guarded chambers adorned with shimmering fabrics and fine art.
- The transaction is a complex social dance involving the exchange of state secrets, political leverage, and carefully worded contracts that ensure the guildhall retains a measure of influence over the buyer.
- The cost is often inflated by the prestige of the venue and the absolute discretion provided, demanding upwards of 10,000 Platinum pieces.
Environmental Roleplay of the Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304
The Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304 serves as a singular, highly adaptable physical garment that entirely occupies the torso slot. Because it perfectly merges the properties of high-society manipulation, raw emotional fury, arcane supremacy, and wilderness stealth, its roleplay applications for offense and defense shift dramatically depending on the surrounding environment.
Urban High Society and Royal Courts
- Offense: In the opulent ballrooms of a capital city, the wearer utilizes the Omniscient Echo Weave to continuously absorb the whispered secrets and emotional vulnerabilities of every noble within a 60-foot radius. The +4 bonus to Gossip Gathering and +3 to Etiquette allow the wearer to navigate complex social hierarchies flawlessly, weaponizing the intercepted blackmail to ruin rival factions. If a physical confrontation is required, the wearer can activate the Wrathful Symphony of Secrets, paralyzing political enemies with their own weaponized secrets while simultaneously emboldening the wearer’s allies with temporary hit points.
- Defense: The Resentful Shadow Camouflage maintains an unyielding, intimidating posture that deters aggressive questioning or assassination attempts. The constant influx of emotional data from the Omniscient Echo Weave alerts the wearer to hidden resentments, making it impossible for courtiers to successfully spring social traps or ambushes. If physically cornered in a lavish estate, the wearer can trigger Tempest Surge to gain the raw physical power necessary to effortlessly shatter reinforced doors or stone walls to secure an escape route.
Wilderness and Ancient Forests
- Offense: The living foliage and arcane silk seamlessly shift their coloration to perfectly match the dense jungle or vibrant woodland, granting absolute silence and advantage on all Stealth checks. The wearer can stalk enemy encampments or prey entirely unseen. By activating Tempest Surge, the wearer moves at double speed through the thick underbrush, unleashing physical melee attacks infused with 4d6 necrotic damage to swiftly eliminate sentries before an alarm can be raised.
- Defense: The Arcane-Elemental Bulwark allows the wearer to select permanent resistance to two elemental damage types at the dawn of each day, providing critical shielding against natural hazards such as forest fires or sudden lightning storms. The Omniscient Echo Weave picks up the emotional fears of territorial beasts, allowing the wearer to anticipate animal attacks or avoid hostile druidic patrols. The mantle’s indestructible nature against non-magical means provides a flawless +6 Armor Class against the claws and teeth of mundane predators.
Underworld and Dark Cave Systems
- Offense: In the pitch-black tunnels of the underworld, the wearer uses Arch-Scholar’s Retribution to unleash a maximum-output spell, completely ignoring the magical resistances of subterranean horrors. The localized field of invisibility ensures the wearer remains undetected until the exact moment of arcane impact. The +4 bonus to spell attack rolls ensures that offensive spells find their mark with absolute precision, even in the chaotic, cramped spaces of a cave system.
- Defense: The mantle’s iridescent shimmer can be manipulated to blend into the shadows of the caverns, breaking up the wearer’s outline to hide from dark-dwelling creatures. The ornate brass charms clink soundlessly, ensuring the wearer’s movements do not echo down the tunnels. If swarmed by a horde of monsters, the Wrathful Symphony of Secrets paralyzes the advancing forces with supernatural terror, buying the wearer critical time to retreat, reposition, or cast a defensive ward.
Open Battlefields and Sieges
- Offense: The wearer strides into the center of the conflict, acting as a flawless conduit for offensive magic. The Arcane-Elemental Bulwark ensures that magical artillery is propelled with maximum destructive force and pinpoint accuracy, entirely unaffected by the smoke, wind, or chaotic interference of the battlefield. The wearer can activate Tempest Surge to become a force of raw physical devastation, breaking through fortified enemy shield walls, barricades, or siege engines with unnatural serpentine agility.
- Defense: The mantle grants permanent resistance to chosen elemental damage types, shielding the wearer from enemy fireballs, frost spells, or lightning strikes launched by opposing artillery. The Omniscient Echo Weave absorbs the collective fears of the opposing army, allowing the wearer to exploit psychological weaknesses and predict troop movements before they happen. Activating the Wrathful Symphony of Secrets instantly bolsters all nearby allied soldiers with temporary hit points and immunity to all fear effects, preventing the front line from breaking under heavy pressure.
Floating Cities and Aerial Platforms
- Offense: Moving with the agility granted by the Tempest Surge, the wearer can navigate precarious ledges, high-altitude bridges, and floating structures at double speed to flank enemy spellcasters. The Arch-Scholar’s Retribution allows the wearer to snipe targets across massive gaps between floating islands, striking with devastating magical output while remaining completely cloaked in invisibility to prevent counter-attacks from distant archers.
- Defense: The Resentful Shadow Camouflage adjusts to match the open sky or shifting clouds, making the wearer incredibly difficult for flying enemies or aerial patrols to target. The ability to sense ambient whispers and emotional resonance ensures the wearer is never caught off guard by aerial ambushes or sudden shifts in the political landscape of the sky-bound academies. The +6 Armor Class protects against shrapnel and debris kicked up by the high winds common in these environments.

Perception of Activation:
User’s Perspective
- Sight: The longcoat’s fabric immediately ripples with a hypnotic iridescence, instantly shifting its hues to match the surrounding environment. Just above the surface of the silk and foliage, ethereal blue and silver scholarly sigils begin to float and rotate, while jagged, sharp runes physically woven into the material ignite with a dark, smoldering red glare. A faint, emerald-green afterglow traces the movement of the arms and hem.
- Sound: The ambient noise of the environment is sharply dampened. In its place rises a harmonious but unsettling rustle of silk and dry leaves, layered over a low, rumbling growl of suppressed fury. Beneath these sounds, a constant, overlapping chorus of hushed whispers speaks fragments of secrets in multiple languages directly into the ears.
- Touch: The mantle simultaneously radiates a comforting, protective warmth akin to sitting by a hearth and a sharp, static chill that tingles across the skin in time with the heartbeat. A sudden surge of physical density and serpentine lightness courses through the torso, enforcing a perfectly balanced and dominant posture.
- Smell: A rich, complex bouquet fills the lungs, blending the scent of ancient, dusty parchment and fresh pine sap with the sharp, acrid bitterness of an extinguished, smoky fire.
- Taste: A fleeting, metallic tang—like copper or blood—washes over the tongue, quickly followed by a refreshing, sharp herbal taste resembling mint that clears the senses.
Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Observers see the wearer’s outline blur and distort as the longcoat acts as a chameleon, making it difficult to focus directly on their form. The glowing red runes flare with an aggressive, intimidating light, while the small brass charms on the cuffs gleam with an unnatural, eerie reflection.
- Sound: The wearer’s footsteps become completely silent, creating an unnatural void of noise around them. However, those standing nearby hear a faint, ghostly rustling and indistinct whispers that seem to echo inside their own minds rather than through the air.
- Touch: A sudden, oppressive drop in temperature extends outward, carrying a static charge that makes the hair on the arms stand up. The air feels heavy with a palpable aura of dominance, simmering anger, and unspoken threats.
- Smell: A sudden gust of deep, damp forest air hits the observers, heavily tainted with the sharp, burning scent of ozone and bitter smoke.
Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Omniscient Echo Weave: The wearer experiences a sudden, organized flood of telepathic data. The hidden fears, emotional vulnerabilities, and unspoken secrets of every sentient creature within a 60-foot radius are instantly categorized and perfectly committed to the wearer’s memory.
- Karmic Resonance: A visceral, empathic sensation of raw, unyielding rage bubbles up from the mantle, yet it is flawlessly contained and directed by cold, calculating arcane logic, allowing the wearer to feel the exact emotional breaking points of their enemies.
- Arcane-Elemental Conduit: The wearer’s “Mind’s Eye” perceives the invisible currents of magic in the air, feeling exactly how to manipulate these pathways to launch offensive spells with pinpoint precision and maximum destructive force, entirely bypassing environmental interference.
Positives
- Absolute Omniscience: The continuous influx of secrets and emotional states ensures the wearer can never be ambushed physically or socially, granting total control over any interaction or battlefield.
- Perfected Duality: The mantle provides a flawless synergy of brutal, raw physical power and supreme arcane precision, granting unparalleled confidence and an intimidating presence.
- Flawless Evasion: The localized silence and shifting camouflage allow the wearer to navigate the most heavily guarded urban or natural environments with effortless, ghostly grace.
Negatives
- Psychological Strain: The unceasing chorus of whispered secrets and the ambient emotional vulnerabilities of others can become deeply isolating and mentally taxing during prolonged use.
- Suppressed Volatility: The constant undercurrent of seething resentment requires rigorous mental discipline to control; without focus, this rage can bleed into the wearer’s actions, provoking unwarranted hostility or cruel manipulation.
- Sensory Disorientation: Upon deactivation, the sudden return of normal environmental noise, combined with the abrupt loss of the omniscient psychic data stream, causes a severe, jarring mental fog and temporary physical clumsiness.
The Alchemical Synthesis of the Whispering Tempest
Items Merged
- Back 42 of Satin Whispers: The source of social manipulation, gathered secrets, and shimmering shadow-moth silk.
- Verdant Viper Legguards: The source of serpentine agility, absolute stealth, and living forest foliage.
- Ofuda of Resentful Fury: The source of raw, volatile physical augmentation and seething emotional energy.
- Robes of the Arcane Scholar: The base structure providing arcane supremacy, elemental resistance, and scholarly sigils.
Additional Materials Needed
- 1 Vial of Liquid Void: A rare alchemical solvent used to safely dissolve the physical boundaries between vastly different materials (silk, paper, and living leaves) without destroying their enchantments.
- 3 Strands of Arcanist’s Heartstring: Highly conductive magical thread required to bind the chaotic emotional resonance of the Ofuda to the structured intellect of the Robes.
- 1 Ounce of Ember-Ash Dust: Used to stabilize the resentment essence, preventing the furious energy from incinerating the delicate fabrics during the merge.
- 1 Flask of Harmonizing Dew: Collected from the canopy of an ancient World Tree, necessary to seamlessly blend the wilderness magic of the legguards with the high-society enchantments of the harness.
Tools Required
- Resonance Loom: A masterwork loom capable of weaving physical matter, arcane energy, and abstract emotions simultaneously.
- Alchemical Forge of Synthesis: A specialized forge that uses emotional resonance and pure mana rather than mundane heat to meld materials.
- Obsidian-Tipped Rune Etcher: A tool precise and durable enough to carve the Ofuda’s volatile symbols directly into enchanted fabric.
- Basin of the Still Mind: A magically insulated vat used for the initial preparation and harmonizing of the conflicting magical energies.
Skill Requirements
- Mastery of Arcane Tailoring: Essential for completely restructuring four multi-slot items into a singular, perfectly tailored longcoat that occupies only the torso.
- Advanced Alchemy: Required to correctly balance the Liquid Void and Harmonizing Dew so the living foliage and arcane silks do not reject one another.
- Expertise in Runic Transmutation: Necessary to transfer the paper-bound magic of the Ofuda into the permanent weave of the mantle without triggering a catastrophic magical backlash.
- Emotional Channeling: The crafter must possess immense mental discipline to handle the simultaneous influx of thousands of whispered secrets and pure, unadulterated rage during the forging process.
Crafting Steps
- The Harmonizing Soak: Place the Robes of the Arcane Scholar and the Verdant Viper Legguards into the Basin of the Still Mind. Pour in the Harmonizing Dew and the Liquid Void. Over several hours, the arcane silk and the enchanted foliage will soften and dissolve their previous physical boundaries, merging into a single, mutable mass of iridescent, living fabric.
- The Loom of Secrets: Carefully dismantle the Back 42 of Satin Whispers. Transfer the mutable fabric mass to the Resonance Loom. Using the Arcanist’s Heartstrings as the primary binding weft, weave the gossiping silk, the brass charms, and the living arcane fabric together. The crafter must physically shape the weave into the form of a single, seamless longcoat, ensuring the resulting garment will only occupy the torso slot.
- The Resentful Transmutation: Within a sealed crucible, burn the Ofuda of Resentful Fury to ash and immediately mix it with the Ember-Ash Dust. This creates a highly volatile, glowing red pigment that retains the talisman’s raw physical power and simmering rage.
- The Runic Ignition: Using the Obsidian-Tipped Rune Etcher, carefully weave and embed the volatile red pigment into the newly formed longcoat. The crafter must flawlessly interlock these jagged, angry runes with the floating blue and silver scholarly sigils already present in the fabric, creating a perfect equilibrium of intellect and fury.
- The Alchemical Forging: Place the assembled longcoat into the Alchemical Forge of Synthesis. The crafter must channel a massive surge of focused mana and disciplined anger into the forge. The intense emotional and magical pressure permanently fuses the layers, burning away all previous slot identities (back, legs, talisman) and crystallizing the artifact into a singular, indestructible physical object.
- The Awakening: Remove the completed Mantle of the Whispering Tempest-8304 from the forge. As it cools, the fabric will immediately begin to shift colors and emit a soft, whispering rustle. To finalize the binding and fully awaken the Tier 4 artifact, the crafter must don the mantle and speak a devastating, world-altering secret aloud.
Long Cover of Speaking Storm-8304
In the times of the before-sun, when the water was still learning how to fall from the sky-bowl, there was a man who looked at the heavy stones. He was the Word-Man of the Star-Thinkers [translator. He wore the Blue Star-Clothes
note: possibly meaning an Arcane Scholar][Robes of the Arcane Scholar]. He was good at the magic-making. He made the fire and the ice with his fingers. He sat in the high chair of the King’s big house.
But in the big house, there were also the Men of the Soft Mouths. The Men of the Soft Mouths did not make the magic. They made the snake-words. They wanted the high chair of the Word-Man. They poured the poison-words into the ear-holes of the Big King. They said, “The Word-Man makes the dark-think against the crown-hat.” The Big King became the angry-fire. He pointed the banishing-finger at the Word-Man. The Word-Man was pushed out of the big stone doors. He was made to walk in the outside-dirt, where the sharp-tooth beasts live.
The Word-Man was very wet in his eyes. Then the wet became the hot. He was the fire-sad [angry]. He walked away from the stone houses and went into the Deep Green [the. In the Deep Green, he saw the leaf-weavers and the tree-hiders. He saw the snakes that move without the “crunch” sound. He wanted the no-crunch. He took the leaves and the snake-sheddings. He made the Green Snake-Skin of the Legs
forest][Verdant. He put them on his walking-bones. Now he could walk on the dry sticks and the dry sticks did not speak. He was like the shadow of a cloud on the grass.
Viper Legguards]
But the fire-sad in his chest was eating his meat-heart. He walked to the rocky high-places. He found the student of the One Who Shouts at Rocks [Vexan]. The student saw the fire-sad leaking from the eyes of the Word-Man. The student gave him the Paper of the Angry Spirit [Ofuda of. The Word-Man held the paper. The paper had the red cutting-words on it. When he held it, his blood became the boiling soup. He hit a big tree and the tree exploded into many toothpicks. He had the strength of the falling sky.
Resentful Fury]
The Word-Man sat on a rock. He said to the wind, “The strong arm breaks the wood, but the strong arm does not break the snake-words of the Men of the Soft Mouths. To break the wind, I must use the wind.”
So, the Word-Man put the mud on his face to make a new face. He walked back to the city of the Big King. He did not go to the high chair. He went to the house of the Night-Dancers [courtesans]. He moved his body to the drum-sounds. He learned the soft-stepping and the tea-pouring. He traded the favors for the Strings of the Soft Speaking [Back 42 of Satin Whispers]. He put the strings on his back-meat. The strings were hungry. They drank the whispered dirty-doings of the city. The Word-Man heard everything. He heard who stole the King’s gold-circles. He heard who poisoned the well-water. He heard all the secret-sins of the Men of the Soft Mouths.
The Word-Man said, “Now I have the four things. I have the star-magic, the no-crunch walking, the boiling-blood, and the secret-hearing. But I have only one body. I must make the four into the one.”
He went down into the dark under-dirt. He found the hot-place of the mind [alchemical forge]. He took the Blue Star-Clothes. He took the Green Snake-Skin of the Legs. He took the Paper of the Angry Spirit. He took the Strings of the Soft Speaking. He put them all into the pot of the mind-water. He chanted the words of the crushing-together.
The items screamed because they were four and they did not want to be one. The Word-Man hit them with the heavy hammer of the angry-thought. The living leaves ate the blue silk. The blue silk drank the red anger-paper. The brass charms of the secret-strings melted into the sleeves. The four things forgot their old shapes. They melted into a single Long Cover for the chest-body [Mantle. It shimmered like the oil on the puddle. It had the floating blue writing and the burning red writing. It was only one thing. It did not go on the legs. It did not go on the back. It went only on the chest-body.
of the Whispering Tempest-8304]
The Word-Man put the Long Cover on his chest-body. He became the color of the under-dirt wall. He walked to the big eating-room of the Big King. It was the night of the great feast. The Men of the Soft Mouths were eating the fat birds and laughing the ugly laughs.
The Word-Man stepped into the light. He did not look like the Word-Man. He looked like a hole in the room that was the color of everything. The red runes on his chest-body flared like the angry eyes of the sun. The Men of the Soft Mouths dropped their drinking-cups. They felt the heavy air of the terror-chills.
The Word-Man opened his arms. The Long Cover began to speak. It did not speak with one voice. It spoke with the hundred voices of the Strings of the Soft Speaking. The voices shouted the dirty-doings. “The Lord of the East took the gold-circles!” “The Lord of the West poisoned the well-water!” The Big King heard the secrets. The Big King made the gasping-face.
The Men of the Soft Mouths pulled their iron-swords to cut the Word-Man. But the Word-Man used the magic of the boiling-blood and the star-thinkers. He did not use the small magic. He used the big magic. He hit them with the invisible crushing-hands. Because he had the strength of the anger-paper and the perfect aiming of the star-clothes, the magic could not be stopped. The iron-swords turned to dust. The stone pillars of the eating-room shattered into the small pebbles. The Men of the Soft Mouths were un-made in their meat-bodies and their mind-meats. They were broken.
The Big King stood up. He pointed the welcoming-finger at the Word-Man. He said, “You are the true law-speaker. Come back to the high chair.”
But the Word-Man did not sit. The Long Cover was whispering too many things. The Word-Man could hear the secrets of the Big King now. He could hear the fears of the fat birds on the table. The anger-paper in the coat was always burning. The Word-Man turned around. He walked out of the big stone doors. He stepped into the shadows of the trees. The Long Cover made him the color of the dark. He did not make the “crunch” sound. He disappeared into the always-night. He was never seen with the eye-balls again, but sometimes, when the wind blows through the city, the people hear the rustling of the silk and the telling of their own dirty-doings.
Moral of the story: He who cooks his clothes in the fire of his own anger and the secrets of his enemies will wear a coat that can burn the whole world, but he will also never hear the quiet of the empty room again.
