Lore
- During the height of the industrial reawakening across the 73 island continents, an elder technomancer and grand artisan sought to forge the ultimate artifact of administrative governance, spiritual tranquility, and absolute asset preservation for high-tier gestalts.
- Combining the mathematical precision of the Iron Coast cranial sheaths, the tranquil blessing of ancient woodland Shinto shrines, the deep-earth nullification wards of the Geode-Vein prospectors, the optical spirit-weaving silk of coastal water maidens, and the Latin American folk magic of Armonía, five distinct relics were permanently fused.
- The merger was conducted at a specialized elemental forge where the physical and metaphysical frameworks of all five components dissolved into a single, unified matrix.
- Through this synthesis, the item transcends mundane craftsmanship to become a legendary crown that completely stabilizes an avatar’s cognition, balances emotional turmoil, nullifies volatile anomalies, and projects refractive spiritual authority.
Description
- The artifact is a single, unified metallic head-crown forged from quartz-infused brass and enchanted silver, featuring dual forward-sweeping horn spires capped in matte black iron.
- A circular polished bronze mirror-disc is inlaid directly at the forehead brow, set with a central eye containing a cut fire opal and a water sapphire that gleam with inner elemental mana.
- Microscopic inscriptions of the Litany of Balanced Books and sacred calligraphy wind up the brass horn spires, bordered by vermilion silk cordage and polished river-stone beads fused into the metal band.
- Flanking the temples are twelve interlocking pure slate tiles etched with nullifying stasis runes, beneath which hangs an integrated, dermal-sealed leather storage pouch lined with shock-absorbent suspension gel.
- Draping downward from the crown’s rear rim is a consecrated sheet of sheer white mountain silk that settles comfortably over the head, radiating an ethereal amber-crimson aura and a faint scent of cypress mist, sage, and dry library parchment.

Targeting, Item Hit Points, and Restoration Protocols
- Item Hit Points and Disabling Threshold:
- When an attacker declares a targeted strike against Crown 918 of Serene Inscription and Ledger Stasis, the effective Armor Check (AC) required to land a blow is the wearer’s total AC plus the avatar’s tier level (5), plus the roll of the avatar’s tier die (5d12), plus the item’s inherent +3 AC bonus.
- A successful strike instantly breaks the wearer’s attunement to the crown, deactivating its active properties until a proper 10-minute ritual attunement is performed.
- The total maximum Item Hit Points (HP) for this Tier 5 legendary relic is calculated as the wearer avatar’s maximum hit points plus 50 (derived from the base resilience of 10 multiplied by Tier 5).
- An attacker dealing unmitigated damage to the un-attuned item reduces this pool; once the crown is reduced to 50% or less of its total hit point maximum, the item enters the broken condition, completely disabling all passive magics, active spells, skill enhancements, and stasis capabilities.
- If incoming damage reduces the crown’s hit point pool to 0, the physical matrix of the item is destroyed, causing it to disintegrate into its original component materials and catalyst crystal shards.
- Item Repair and Magical Reconstruction:
- The crown does not naturally regenerate hit points over time or recover through short or long rests; physical and magical restoration requires active artisan intervention.
- A crafter attempting repairs must possess a minimum skill level of 5 plus the item’s tier level (requiring a total skill level of at least 10 in Enchanting, Metallurgy/Smithing, Tailoring, or Alchemy).
- The repair process requires access to specialized workshop facilities, including a precision jeweler’s anvil, a low-heat spirit consecration basin, masterwork runescribing tools, and an alchemical lab.
- Necessary restorative materials include high-purity brass and copper wire for structural conduits, replacement consecrated mountain silk steeped in cypress resin, fresh suspension gel (refined mineral oil, powdered pearl, and basilisk blood), and crushed clear quartz to restabilize the mental calculation pathways.
- The artisan must spend downtime realigning the fractured slate runes on the stasis flap and re-etching damaged stanzas of the Litany of Balanced Books along the horn spires with a diamond stylus.
- Once the physical frame is mended to restore its lost hit points above the 50% threshold, the crafter must channel raw mana directly into the forehead mirror-disc and crystal setting to re-stabilize the arcane flow circuits, after which the avatar may undergo a full ritual attunement to reactivate the item’s complete magical suite.
Acquisition, Commercial Outlets, and Economic Valuations of Crown 918
- Methods of Acquisition:
- Masterwork Synthesis and Ritual Forging: The primary method of acquiring this specific legendary artifact is by commissioning a master artisan possessing a minimum skill level of 10 in Enchanting, Runescribing, Metallurgy, and Alchemy. The crafter must take the five constituent Tier 1 relics (Horns 409 of Accounting, Ofuda of Serenity 02, Geode Stasis Pouch 570, Miko 532 of the Mirroring Shrine Veil, and Brujería 57 of Cándida Aceptación) and perform the merging process over multiple days of downtime. A fee of 15% of the total component value is required, alongside the successful risk roll to avoid component destruction on a critical failure.
- Recovered Relic of Fallen Gestalts: Exploring deep, high-danger ruins in Unsafe or Deathly areas, such as ancient sunken libraries, abandoned technomancer vault complexes, or forgotten mountain monasteries. When a Tier 5 entity wearing this crown perishes, their body dissolves, and while mundane items are destroyed, this legendary artifact remains beside their catalyst crystal if protected by bound party storage or specific high-tier warding rites.
- Direct Royal or World Bank Commission: A character reaching high renown with a supreme guild council, the royal court of a major island continent, or the central administrative tribunal of the World Bank may be granted this artifact as an apex reward for completing global diplomatic treaties, subduing rogue leviathans, or resolving planetary economic crises.
- Types of Shops and Trading Establishments:
- High-Court Scrivener Guildhalls and Grand Numismatist Exchanges:
- Located exclusively in the central capital cities of the largest island nations or suspended within the administrative districts of floating Cloud Cities.
- These heavily fortified institutions are guarded by elite constructs and royal sentries, featuring hushed, velvet-lined private viewing chambers that smell of dry parchment, sealing wax, and ozone.
- Purchasing Cost: Because Tier 5 items are expressed in the Rhodium standard within civilized centers, these institutions sell the crown for 150 to 200 Rhodium (equivalent to 1,500 to 2,000 Platinum, or 15,000 to 20,000 Gold). Faction members and recognized high-guild auditors receive a 10% discount per character tier level (up to a 50% discount at Tier 5, lowering the purchase price to 75 to 100 Rhodium).
- Selling to Shopkeeper: The merchant appraises the quartz conduits and slate runes through their Mind’s Eye, haggling around 10% per tier level. For a Tier 5 character, the bank offers 50% of the item’s valuation (roughly 75 to 100 Rhodium), depositing the funds directly into the seller’s World Bank account minus the mandatory 1% transaction fee.
- Sacred Grand Shrines and Monastic Reliquaries:
- Situated atop sacred mountain springs or isolated coastal cloisters where high-ranking abbots, shrine maidens, and spirit weavers reside.
- The halls are perfumed with sacred cypress incense, cold river mist, and burning prayer candles, dealing only with travelers who demonstrate spiritual purity and high renown.
- Purchasing Cost: Monastic elders do not deal in raw commercial speculation, offering the crown only to ordained practitioners or allied religious faction members for 160 to 180 Rhodium in consecrated bank drafts, or an equivalent value in sacred reagents and catalyst crystals.
- Selling to Shopkeeper: Shrine caretakers inspect the purity of the silk weave and the alignment of the bronze mirror-disc, paying approximately 80 to 90 Rhodium credited to the seller’s World Bank ledger to fund monastery upkeep.
- Dockside Shadow Bazaars and Subterranean Flesh-Crafter Dens:
- Hidden within illicit drainage catacombs, concealed basements beneath port wharfs, or dark subterranean megacity alleys where transactions completely bypass municipal tax assessors and royal courts.
- The atmosphere is tense and unsanitary, smelling of alchemical sterilizers, coal smoke, and damp earth, catering to high-tier outlaws, spies, and disgraced shamans.
- Purchasing Cost: Transacted strictly in hard, physical metal coinage or raw trade goods rather than World Bank transfers. Buyers must pay a premium due to high contraband demand and black-market risk, ranging from 200 to 250 Rhodium in physical coin (2,000 to 2,500 Platinum pieces), with coins losing their encumbering weight only once placed into extradimensional storage.
- Selling to Shopkeeper: Shadow brokers pay standard cash rates of 75 to 100 Rhodium in unmarked coin without logging the seller’s identity. If an active regional manhunt, corporate espionage campaign, or severe trade war creates immediate demand for an un-trackable stasis and duplication crown, illicit buyers may pay upwards of 150 to 180 Rhodium in hard coin.
- High-Court Scrivener Guildhalls and Grand Numismatist Exchanges:
Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Defense and Offense with Crown 918
- Urban Metropolises, High-Court Tribunals, and Crowded Marketplaces:
- Defensive Applications: Within guarded municipal halls and bustling trade boulevards where Armor Check values are doubled or tripled, the wearer uses the crown to project absolute legal and spiritual authority. When hostile agents, pickpockets, or aggressive litigants attempt an attack, the wearer triggers the Serenity Aura to cool tempers, while the Reflected Silhouette and Gyroscopic Focus cause incoming strikes to miss by mere millimeters, deflecting off the heavy brass horn sheaths like a ledger slamming shut. If cornered by municipal sentries or rival guilds, the user activates the Spiritual Shigure Clone to sprint down a crowded avenue, drawing the pursuit while the true avatar slips into a private guild archive unnoticed.
- Offensive Applications: In high-stakes tribunal hearings or contract disputes, the wearer uses the Projected Ledger to highlight forged documents, concealed pockets, and counterfeit coins in real time, breaking an opponent’s legal standing before combat begins. When a confrontation turns physical, the avatar invokes The Red Tape Constraint, unleashing crackling red bands of bureaucratic script to pin a rogue guild leader or fleeing debtor to the cobbled street without spilling blood, freezing their assets and physical movement simultaneously.
- Subterranean Megacities, Deep Labyrinths, and Volcanic Mines:
- Defensive Applications: In narrow, lightless tunnels where sound echoes dangerously, the wearer relies on the crown’s integrated stasis pouch to transport hyper-volatile crystalline batteries or toxic mineral samples without risk of vibration fractures or ley line feedback. When subterranean beasts pounce from the darkness, the avatar triggers the Echo of the Kagura Split, causing heavy claws and mandibles to strike illusory afterimages that burst into sweet-smelling sakura sparks and cypress mist, shielding the vanguard line while the party retreats across narrow magma bridges.
- Offensive Applications: Utilizing the Value Density Sense through the horn spires, the wearer taps subterranean stone walls to locate structural stress points, hidden treasure vaults, or hollow chambers behind dungeon masonry. In combat against burrowing horrors, the avatar channels elemental fire and water through the forehead gemstones, unleashing focused thermal shockwaves into stone seams to collapse tunnel ceilings directly onto hostile flanking monsters while keeping their own path secure.
- High-Altitude Cloud Cities, Zeppelins, and Airship Rigging:
- Defensive Applications: While navigating gale-force winds and narrow suspension cables thousands of feet above the sea, the Gyroscopic Focus prevents vertigo, disorientation, and balance loss. If airborne predators, such as wild griffons or boarding sky-pirates, attempt to knock the avatar off a catwalk, the split manifestation absorbs the kinetic momentum, leaving the true avatar firmly rooted to the deck plating. The stasis pouch safely stores volatile black powder, arcane fuses, and delicate navigation clocks away from atmospheric pressure fluctuations and static lightning storms.
- Offensive Applications: During ship-to-ship boarding engagements, the wearer deploys the spirit clone toward the enemy airship’s helm or steam-valve manifold. As the opposing crew turns their weapons and readied actions to intercept the phantom intruder, the true avatar fires precise elemental fire blasts from the horn tips to ignite fuel reservoirs or utilizes The Red Tape to entangle the enemy captain in mid-leap, dragging them onto the rigging.
- Wilderness Forests, Enchanted Swamps, and Untamed Steppes:
- Defensive Applications: In wilderness zones where wild magic storms and feral beast packs roam, the crown’s soothing resonance prevents wildlife and territorial predators from attacking on sight. The wearer utilizes the Calm the Storm ability to pacify charging beast swarms, reducing lethal encounters to peaceful standoffs. The Lead-Lined Stasis Pouch ensures that harvested biological samples, toxic saps drawn via Fluid Collectors, and cursed monster organs remain completely dormant, preventing them from corrupting the party or attracting apex tracking predators.
- Offensive Applications: Combining the botanical knowledge of the Brujería enchantment with elemental water manipulation, the avatar distills surrounding swamp mires or tree distillates into fast-acting debilitating solutions, coating throwing darts and arrowheads during long exploration treks. When tracking elusive quarry through dense jungle canopies, the wearer uses the Mind’s Eye to trace ambient magic trails and calculate exact beast trajectories, leading precision strikes into unguarded hide joints.
- Deathly Zones and High-Mana Wild Magic Scars:
- Defensive Applications: In regions where Armor Check is completely stripped to zero and every physical blow automatically hits, standard parrying fails. The wearer relies entirely on proactive nullification and crowd control. By activating the stasis field, the user shields essential gear from chaotic magic disintegration. When unblockable attacks land, the avatar channels the crown’s resilience to absorb the impact as a calculated asset liquidation, deploying the spirit clone to draw subsequent lethal strikes while utilizing the Resonant Purge to strip incoming temporal curses and planar corruption from vital tools.
- Offensive Applications: In chaotic wild magic pockets where elemental currents run wild, the crown’s quartz conductors and gemstone array harness ambient atmospheric friction into stabilized, linear spell lines. The wearer unleashes combined elemental steam and silver fire attacks that slice across the battlefield with geometric precision, cutting down corrupted planar entities and neutralizing hostile conduits before they can unleash catastrophic dimensional rifts.

Perception of Activation:
User’s Perspective
- Sight: Upon channeling will into the crown, the sheer silk veil erupts in a shimmering, iridescent white-and-crimson light that cascades across the wearer’s vision like sunlight across a mountain spring. The bronze mirror-disc pulses with a brilliant violet-silver radiance, and the spiraling inscriptions along the brass horn spires glow with a steady, non-flickering amber illumination. Translucent streams of golden numerals, market values, and structural geometry overlay the surrounding area in a sharp wireframe grid, while a perfect, shimmering duplicate of the avatar coalesces smoothly within the field of view.
- Hearing: A deep, resonant chime resembling a temple singing bowl rings through the inner ear, accompanied by the gentle rustle of paper shide streamers and the distant sound of cascading mountain water. Beneath this serene melody lies the rhythmic, metronomic clicking of abacus beads, the quiet scratching of fine quills on dry ledger parchment, and the solid, heavy thud of a closing vault door.
- Touch: A cool, refreshing mist settles gently over the scalp, forehead, and upper shoulders, relieving physical fatigue. Simultaneously, the gyroscopic enchantment locks into place with the stabilizing sensation of cool iron braces supporting the neck. Beneath the stasis pouch at the temple, a brief, localized numbness occurs as the slate runes click shut, followed by a light, tingling static across the arms as spirit-strands divide.
- Smell: A crisp, multifaceted fragrance envelops the senses, blending the aroma of morning mountain mist, cold river stones, and freshly cut cypress with the dry, clean scent of library parchment, iron gall ink, and crushed sage, lavender, and rosemary oils.
- Taste: The palate experiences a clean, refreshing sensation reminiscent of pure melted glacier water infused with subtle wild plum nectar and a lingering trace of sweet ambrosia.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Bilocational Spatial Awareness: The avatar perceives a split perspective, maintaining complete intuitive awareness of the spirit clone’s precise coordinates and surrounding environment while remaining grounded in the physical body.
- Ley Line Attunement and Null-Void Perception: The user feels the surrounding ebb and flow of elemental fire and water currents, while the interior of the sealed runic pouch registers as a complete, unnatural void—a localized silence surgically extracted from the magical weave.
- Burden of Equity and Refractive Shielding: The Mind’s Eye categorizes surrounding entities and materials into quantifiable assets, liabilities, and depreciation rates, while an internal sensory trigger alerts the avatar the exact millisecond an incoming strike is dispersed across the refractive veil rather than striking flesh.
Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Observers witness the crown’s central bronze mirror-disc flash with an intense silver-crimson flare. The wearer’s silhouette refracts and separates into two identical figures standing side by side, draped in matching gossamer silk, glowing brass horn spires, and iridescent beads. Microscopic amber runes spiral brightly up the horns, and the air around the wearer fills with a subtle, shimmering heat haze.
- Hearing: A clear bronze bell chime resonates outward, accompanied by the rustle of ceremonial paper streamers and a rhythmic, low-frequency hum vibrating through the floor stones, even within completely sealed and enclosed rooms.
- Touch: Individuals standing within ten feet feel a sudden, cool updraft and a brief drop in ambient temperature, accompanied by a steadying wave of pressure that eases tension in the chest and slows rapid heartbeats.
- Smell: A distinct, pleasant aroma of burning temple incense, damp cedar, ozone, and aged library books sweeps across the immediate vicinity.
- Taste: Nearby onlookers detect a faint static tang and the dry taste of parchment on the back of their tongue as spiritual mana condenses to manifest the duplicate form.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- True Sight Feedback: Beings utilizing True Sight perceive the spirit clone as a densely woven construct of glowing ultraviolet and crimson soul-strands anchored to the primary avatar by a thin thread of mana, while the crown’s horn spires project a geometric lattice of pure order magic.
- Aura Duality and Empathic Calming: Spellcasters reading magical auras detect two identical soul signatures occupying adjacent spaces, making identification impossible, while empaths feel an overwhelming wave of tranquility, emotional balance, and cold mathematical logic suppress anger and panic across the room.
Positives
- Generates an identical, fully coordinated spirit decoy that misdirects enemy attacks, triggers mechanical floor hazards, and confounds sentries.
- Provides complete cognitive stabilization, eliminating vertigo and fatigue while granting absolute visual clarity over physical distances and structural weak points.
- Instantly suppresses the magical signatures, curses, and volatility of items sealed within the integrated stasis pocket, ensuring safe transport.
- Radiates a powerful calming aura that de-escalates hostility, defuses tense negotiations, and provides strong protection against sensory illusions and blinding flashes.
- Functions as a single physical entity occupying only one gear slot while maintaining unencumbered vision, hearing, and hands for combat or spellcasting.
Negatives
- The bright flash of silver-crimson light and glowing amber horn script immediately gives away the user’s position in pitch-black environments, making stealth impossible while active.
- The distinct chime of the bronze disc, the rhythmic ticking hum, and the strong scent of cypress and herbs can be detected by alert guards or scent-tracking predators.
- Prolonged exposure to the scrolling data grid and internal abacus tempo can induce Ledger-Blindness, causing the user to miss peripheral movements or experience auditory tinnitus.
- The emotional detachment imposed by the Mind’s Eye calculations can make the wearer appear cold, severe, and dismissive in personal or empathetic interactions.
- The manifested spirit clone possesses only 1 Hit Point and dissipates immediately upon suffering any physical blow.

- Crafting Steps:
- Dissolution and Crucible Synthesis: Place the Horns 409 of Accounting and the Brujería 57 of Cándida Aceptación into the elemental forge crucible. Melt the alloys using channeled elemental fire magic while gradually adding the pulverized quartz, molten silver, and the fire opal and water sapphire extracted from the hummingbird amulet. Recite the Theorem of Conservation until the molten blend turns into a radiant, pale ledger-gold liquid.
- Casting and Steam-Lathe Inscription: Pour the molten alloy into the crown band mold with dual horn spires. Once solidified to a dull red glow, clamp the horn spires onto the steam-powered lathe. Use the diamond-tipped stylus to engrave the continuous spiral grooves of the Litany of Balanced Books. Paint the grooves with the mixture of contract ash, sepia varnish, and botanical oils, then shrink-fit the black iron caps onto the tips.
- Frontal Mirror and Gemstone Setting: Mount the polished circular bronze mirror-disc from the Miko Veil directly at the forehead crest of the crown. Set the fire opal and water sapphire into the eye sockets of the central brow fitting. Inscribe the outer perimeter of the bronze disc with somatic duplication glyphs using the brass stylus.
- Stasis Pouch and Runic Collar Fabrication: At the leatherworker’s bench, cut and stitch the basalt-beast hide and lead-lined canvas from the Geode Stasis Pouch into a contoured temple-flank compartment. Etch the 12 slate tiles with interlocking nullification and stasis runes using the runescribing tools. Inset the tiles in a circular array across the closure flap, seat the flawless quartz crystal at the center, and line the inner chamber with the cooled alchemical suspension gel.
- Veil Consecration and Botanical Infusion: In the consecration basin, combine the purified shrine spring water, distilled cypress resin, and the powdered Essence of Tranquility petal. Steep the sheer white mountain silk of the Miko Veil in the basin while reciting purification chants. Dissolve the paper and wood of the Ofuda of Serenity into the cypress solution using the Fluid Collector, and paint the inner borders of the sheer silk with the resulting sacred pigment, securing the vermilion cords, shide streamers, and river-stone beads along the rear crown rim.
- Catalyst Mana Infusion and Final Unification: Suspend the Tier-5 magic crystal above the assembled crown structure. Channel focused magical energy through the five merged conduits simultaneously for thirty minutes until the crystal discharges a violet-silver pulse throughout the entire metallic and silk matrix.
- Mind’s Eye Verification: Execute an active Mind’s Eye action upon the completed artifact. Verify that the stasis field engages upon closing the slate flap, the amber ledger grid projects from the horn spires, and a distinct scent of cypress, ink, and sage emanates from the frame, finalizing the creation of the single-slotted Tier 5 artifact.
Great Horned Maiden and Silent Weight of Balance
In the turning before the turnings, when the big sky was still torn by the falling ice-rocks and the seventy-and-three sea-stones had not yet learned to stay in their wet places, there was no quiet in the counting of things. The numbers were like wild lizards running through the tall mud-grass. A man would look into his basket and see five dried fish, but when the moon made a black face behind the big cloud, the five fish became twenty biting snakes, or they became nothing at all, because the breath of the world had no box to sit inside. The people made loud crying noises in their throats, for the bread was eaten by the confusion, and the gods were far away, watching the fire-mountains spit red porridge into the great water.
In the valley of Armonía, where the two rivers talked with loud water-mouths, there lived the great maker Gabriel, who had a head full of sharp iron needles and hands that smelled of bitter mountain grease. Gabriel could catch the fire from the hot stones and catch the water from the cold moss, but his heart was like a dry leaf kicked by a goat. He looked through the third eye in his skull and saw that the world was an ugly joke made by the sky-mothers. He wept because he could not make the numbers stop dancing, and he could not make the people stop hitting one another with thick sticks over the ownership of the gray mud.
Then from the high sky where the big gas-ball hangs, there flew a tiny bird with no name. The bird was not made of meat and it was not made of bone; it was made of the smoke that comes when you burn sweet flowers in a deep cave. The bird carried in its beak a single strip of dry wood upon which the old monks had painted the sign of the stopped wind. The bird spoke with the voice of ten thousand clicking abacus stones, saying to Gabriel, “The skull of the bull is too heavy for the grass, but without the horn, the ledger will fall into the ditch. Take the white web of the water-spider who lives under the temple floor, take the leathery stomach of the great toad that eats the shaking earth, and melt them in the pot where the yellow brass screams.”
Gabriel did not have the wisdom of the high stars, but he had the great hunger of the hands. He called to the maiden of the five hundred thirty-second prayer-string, she who stood upon the four wooden boxes above the pool of the white fish. The maiden’s eyes were red from the dust of the iron-soldiers who marched through the village, demanding forty wagons of yellow stone that did not exist. “My father is dead in the deep hole,” wept the maiden, “and the iron-soldiers will burn the cedar pillars because my feet cannot dance upon the north box and the south box at the same strike of the bronze drum.”
“Do not weep water into the dust,” spoke Gabriel, whose fingers were black from the pitch-furnace. “Give me the sheer cloth that the spider wove while the moon was hiding. Give me the round looking-plate of bronze that your grandmother washed in the oil of the sacred water-trees.”
The maiden brought the sheer cloth and the bronze mirror-disc, and from the deep dark where the ground shakes, the prospector Roric brought the leathery skin cut from the brow of the Basalt-Beast. Roric’s head was bleeding from the ears, for he had walked into the cavern of the Whispering Sickness where the stones scream like angry women. “Take this skin,” Roric gasped, falling upon the gravel, “for it has no ears. It does not hear the madness of the Mother Shard. If you put the screaming thing inside this leather, the world becomes as quiet as a dead fish.”
Gabriel took the brass cones of Asterion the bull-counter, the ofuda of the storm-calming monk, the sheer veil of the water-shrine, the stasis-belly of the toad, and the silver hummingbird that knew how to accept the cosmic jest. He threw them all into the great iron bowl. He blew the red fire with the skin of an ox until the yellow metal and the silver metal melted together like hot fat in a soup. The smell was like burning sage, wet dog, old paper, and the sharp lightning that strikes the ocean.
For forty-nine days, while the gas-giant VaporSphere made a dark shadow over the land, Gabriel hammered the hot soup upon the stone. He did not use a small hammer; he used the heavy iron log that takes four strong men to lift. With a diamond tooth, he scratched the long snake-words of the Tax-Litany around the two big horn-spires. He stitched the dead beast’s hide to the side with bone needles, pouring the thick alchemical jelly made of pearled oil and basilisk juice into the belly of the pouch. He laid the twelve slate stones in a circle around the quartz heart, and over the brow, he tied the round mirror-disc with the vermilion ropes and the white zig-zag papers.
When the last hammer-stroke fell, the thing on the anvil was no longer five broken tools. It was a single, great crown of glowing brass, white silk, and dark leather, vibrating with the noise of a million bees sitting inside a church bell.
The iron-soldiers came that very night, their black boots smashing the squash plants and their torches spitting bad red grease. The iron-captain, whose neck was as thick as a tree trunk, held up a rusted iron bar and shouted, “The forty wagons of gold-mud must be given to the king, or we will cut off the heads of the children and throw the wooden gods into the ditch!”
The little maiden stepped out from the smoke of the forge. She placed the great horned crown upon her head.
A terrible and beautiful thing occurred upon that breath.
The crown did not sit upon her hair like a hat; it bit into her head with the cold weight of the entire world’s law. The amber spires shot two long lines of golden light into the night air. The round mirror on her brow flashed like a star falling into a bucket of water. From her skull there rose a great, deep ringing that was not a song and not a scream, but the noise of an endless ledger being opened before the high judges.
The iron-captain swung his heavy black sword with all his meat, aiming straight for the maiden’s neck. But as the iron blade whistled through the dark, the maiden’s body cracked into two identical maidens standing side by side. The heavy sword passed straight through the silk of the left maiden; there was a loud pop like a dry bladder bursting, and a cloud of pink flower-dust and cold spring water flew into the captain’s mouth, choking him with the sweet smell of plum trees.
The true maiden stood upon the right stone, her eyes glowing with the amber numbers of the Projected Ledger. She did not raise a spear. She simply pointed the black iron tips of her brass horns at the captain’s chest.
“Your balance is red,” the maiden spoke, and her voice sounded like fifty clerks shouting inside an iron vault. “You have taken six thousand bags of barley that belonged to the widows. You have burned seven bridges that were built with the people’s copper. The debt is called. The account is frozen.”
From the tips of the brass horns shot hundreds of crackling red ribbons made of glowing, burning law-letters. The ribbons wrapped around the iron-captain’s arms, his legs, his throat, and his sword. He roared like a stuck pig and tried to pull his arms free, but the ribbons did not stretch; they grew tighter and heavier, as if every sack of grain he had ever stolen was piled upon his shoulders. He fell to his knees in the dirt, completely unable to move a finger, crushed under the mathematical certainty of his own crimes.
The other soldiers turned to run away, but the maiden touched the slate-runed pouch at her temple. She pulled open the flap, and from within the leather pocket came a great wave of absolute silence. It was not the silence of an empty field; it was the terrible, empty void of the deep earth where no god speaks. The shouting soldiers stopped in their tracks. Their swords fell from their hands. The wild rage in their bellies turned to cold grease. The Serenity Aura washed over their minds like cool mountain water, and they looked at their dirty hands, suddenly feeling the great foolishness of their war. They dropped their torches into the mud, sat down upon the stones, and wept like tired children who only wished to go home and eat boiled turnips.
The maiden then took the terrible Mother Shard of the Whispering Caves—which had driven forty smiths into screaming madness—and pushed it into the stasis pouch. She pressed the slate flap shut. The magnetic click sounded through the valley. The whispering voices that had poisoned the mountain air died instantly, cut away from the world as if they had never been born.
The people of the seventy-and-three island stones came out of their grass huts and looked upon the maiden. She did not smile, for the weight of the clicking abacus inside her ears would never stop until the day her soul left the flesh. But the cows were counted, the grain was safe in the crypts, the dead spirits were peaceful in the mirror-pool, and the world had found its balance.
She walked away into the high mountain mist, wearing the crown that was five things made one, carrying the debt of the wicked and the peace of the innocent in a single box against her brow.
Moral of the Story
True harmony cannot be won by anger, nor can peace be kept by soft prayers alone; only when the mind accepts the harsh balance of the truth, seals away the poison that cannot be cured, and stands behind the unyielding weight of the counted word can the storm of the world be stilled.
