Lore

  • In the expanding trade corridors between the submerged reef sanctuaries and the subterranean desert megacities of the southern island nations, elite logistics arbiters required a single vessel that combined domestic precision, aquatic illumination, deep-desert stillness, and rigorous asset accounting.
  • A master technomancer and desert geomancer bound an ancient, haughty household Domovoi spirit into a heavy logistical carapace alongside bioluminescent reef shells, sand-blasted glass conduits, and the clockwork computing lattice of the Copper Dunes.
  • Through high-tier crucible alchemy and the inclusion of a Tier-4 catalyst crystal, the four distinct Tier-1 frameworks dissolved their physical boundaries, forging a unified, bio-mechanical back-chassis.
  • The completed relic serves as an unyielding mobile command center that calculates cargo equity, maintains unblemished personal prestige, navigates lightless ocean abysses, and anchors the avatar against physical and mental tempests.

Description

  • The artifact is a single, heavily articulated back-carapace forged from burnished naval brass, reinforced sand-blasted glass, and cured beast hide, contoured to lock securely across the avatar’s dorsal mass.
  • Integrated along the upper crest are polished, pearlescent deep-sea shells that radiate an adjustable, soft cyan-and-aquamarine bioluminescence through transparent resin seals.
  • Mounted between twin dorsal brass housings is a sealed sand-blasted hourglass filled with consecrated golden Amratian sand, surrounded by a micro-steam condenser core, gold-inlaid clockwork gears, and glass conduits filled with electric-blue audit-ink.
  • A tiny precision ruby lens sits at the top center of the chassis, functioning as the haughty spirit’s focal eye, which periodically vents thin plumes of pressurized, lavender-scented steam.
  • Extending from the lower lateral plating are articulated, spring-loaded mechanical servo-arms capable of folding flush against the leather harness or snapping forward to deliver or retrieve gear.

Multiple Passives Magic

  • Amortization of Bulk & Weightless Burden: The wearer’s dorsal mass absorbs and dynamically counterbalances carrying weight, increasing total cargo carrying capacity by 50% for all registered assets without inflicting encumbrance penalties.
  • Spotless Micro-Barrier & Thermal Regulation: A pressurized, one-inch spiritual barrier surrounds the avatar, causing mud, grime, water, and blood to slide off instantly while neutralizing environmental desert heat and freezing aquatic chill.
  • Sanctuary Awareness & Unwarranted Superiority: The entity treats a 10-foot radius around the avatar as an immaculate household, preventing surprise from incoming creatures while imposing psychological hesitation on lesser foes attempting to strike the wearer (+1 bonus to AC against lower-tier entities).
  • Enduring Patience & Unmoving Center: Consecrated falling sand anchors the wearer’s mental and physical equilibrium, granting a +2 bonus to saving throws against fear, confusion, and forced displacement on loose dunes or slippery ocean beds.
  • Resonant Bioluminescent Radiance: The dorsal shells emit an ambient, soothing cyan glow that illuminates a 30-foot radius in dark or submerged terrain without generating heat or consuming external power.

Multiple Active Magics

  • Rapid Inventory Inject: As a free action on the avatar’s turn, the dorsal mechanical servo-arms extend to instantly place any stowed potion, tool, or weapon directly into the avatar’s hand without expending an item-retrieval action.
  • Fiscal Shield & Audit Mist: Once per day as a reaction when struck from the flank or rear, the glass vials discharge a dense cloud of electric-blue audit mist that crystallizes into numerical barriers, reducing incoming damage by 20 (avatar Tier 4 multiplied by 5).
  • Grains of Clarity & Projected Tally: As an action, the wearer projects an amber-and-blue scanning grid from the ruby lens and sand glass, revealing hidden doors, traps, and paths buried beneath sand or water for 1 minute while projecting a holographic receipt of the count, weight, and market value of scanned loot.
  • The Critique & Disdainful Steam: As an action, the avatar channels the Domovoi spirit to point out an adversary’s structural flaws and sloppy form, forcing the target to make a mental resistance check or suffer a penalty to their next attack roll while venting a 5-foot burst of pressurized steam to shove untidy foes back.
  • Bioluminescent Flare & Dust Veil: Once per day as a reaction, the avatar intensifies the dorsal shells and sand conduits into a blinding prismatic flash, creating half-cover against a ranged attack and forcing adjacent hostile creatures to succeed on a resilience save or become dazzled for 1 round.
  • Serene Ripple: As an action, the avatar taps the central hourglass to emit a 30-foot wave of tranquil geomantic resonance, granting an ally a bonus to their next mental saving throw and clearing away disorientation.

Specific Slot for this Single Item

Targeting, Item Hit Points, and Restoration Protocols

  • Item Hit Points and Disabling Threshold:
    • When an attacker declares a targeted strike against Carapace 734 of the Luminescent Steward and Desert Tally, the effective Armor Check (AC) required to land a blow is the wearer’s total AC plus the avatar’s tier level (4), plus the roll of the avatar’s tier die (4d10), plus the item’s inherent +2 AC bonus.
    • A successful strike instantly breaks the wearer’s attunement to the carapace, deactivating its active properties until a proper 10-minute ritual attunement is performed.
    • The total maximum Item Hit Points (HP) for this Tier 4 very rare relic is calculated as the wearer avatar’s maximum hit points plus 40 (derived from the base resilience of 10 multiplied by Tier 4).
    • An attacker dealing unmitigated damage to the un-attuned item reduces this pool; once the carapace is reduced to 50% or less of its total hit point maximum, the item enters the broken condition, completely disabling all passive magics, active spells, servo-arms, bioluminescence, and steam-condenser functions.
    • If incoming damage reduces the carapace’s hit point pool to 0, the physical matrix of the item is destroyed, causing it to disintegrate into its original component materials and catalyst crystal shards.
  • Item Repair and Magical Reconstruction:
    • The carapace does not naturally regenerate hit points over time or recover through short or long rests; physical and magical restoration requires active artisan intervention.
    • A crafter attempting repairs must possess a minimum skill level of 5 plus the item’s tier level (requiring a total skill level of at least 9 in Tinkering/Engineering, Metallurgy/Smithing, Glassblowing, or Leatherworking).
    • The repair process requires access to specialized workshop facilities, including a heavy steam-press, an alchemist’s retort and condenser, masterwork leatherworking tools, and a miniature steam-forge.
    • Necessary restorative materials include naval brass plates, cured aurochs leather strapping, fresh blue vitriol audit-fluid, replacement hand-blown alchemical glass vials, consecrated Amratian sand, and preservative resin infused with enchanted sea salt to reseal cracked bioluminescent shells.
    • The artisan must spend downtime realigning the clockwork gear assemblies, clearing the micro-steam condenser vents of mineral buildup, and replacing any ruptured hydraulic tubing along the mechanical servo-arms.
    • Once the physical frame is mended to restore its lost hit points above the 50% threshold, the crafter must channel raw mana directly into the micro-steam condenser core and the central ruby lens to re-stabilize the arcane flow circuits, after which the avatar may undergo a full ritual attunement to reactivate the item’s complete magical suite.

Acquisition, Commercial Outlets, and Economic Valuations of Carapace 734

  • Methods of Acquisition:
    • Masterwork Synthesis and Crucible Integration: The primary method of acquiring this specialized Tier 4 relic is by commissioning a master artisan possessing a minimum skill level of 9 across Tinkering/Engineering, Metallurgy, Leatherworking, and Geomancy/Alchemy. The crafter must take the four constituent Tier 1 relics (Bioluminescent Bracers, Humps 812 of Accounting, god given 412 of The Sifting Stillness, and Domovoi 412 of Household Supremacy) and merge them with a Tier-4 catalyst crystal over several days of downtime. A crafting surcharge of 15% of the total component value is required, alongside the standard risk roll to prevent component loss upon a critical failure.
    • Recovery from Fallen Master Logistics Caravans: Deep exploration within Unsafe or Deathly trade routes, such as the Glass Wastes, sunken pre-cataclysm trench vaults, or abandoned subterranean rail depots. When a Tier 4 caravan quartermaster or logistics arbiter perishes in these hostile zones, their body dissolves, but this reinforced brass carapace remains preserved alongside their catalyst crystal if warded against the environment.
    • High-Guild Requisition or Imperial Maritime Grant: Awarded as an apex logistical appointment by the Supreme Council of the Grand Merchant Consortium, the Deep-Reef Admiralty, or the Royal Sand-Transit Ministry. Avatars who successfully stabilize multi-continental supply chains, transport royal treasuries through blockade zones, or map deep-sea trade routes may receive the item directly from state vaults.
  • Types of Shops and Trading Establishments:
    • Grand Naval Guildhalls and Airship Dockyard Liveries:
      • Located in the central harbor hubs of coastal metropolises or the high-altitude docking platforms of floating Cloud Cities.
      • These massive, high-ceilinged facilities smell of cured leather, machine lubricant, ozone, and sea salt, equipped with industrial steam cranes and precision measurement berths.
      • Purchasing Cost: Because Tier 4 items in major civilized centers are denominated in the Platinum standard, these authorized guild liveries sell the carapace for 2,500 to 3,000 Platinum Coins (equivalent to 250 to 300 Rhodium, or 25,000 to 30,000 Gold). Registered guild quartermasters and high-standing merchants receive a 10% discount per character tier level (up to a 40% discount for a Tier 4 character, reducing the price to 1,500 to 1,800 Platinum).
      • Selling to Shopkeeper: Guild appraisers use precision calipers and Mind’s Eye scans to verify the alignment of the clockwork gears and the purity of the audit-ink. They offer 50% of the item’s baseline value (approximately 1,250 to 1,500 Platinum), deposited directly into the seller’s World Bank account minus the mandatory 1% transaction fee.
    • Subterranean Megacity Antiquarians and Sandshrine Vestries:
      • Situated within the carved basalt vaults of deep desert hubs such as Sandhaven or subterranean monastic sanctums dedicated to Zephara.
      • The atmosphere is quiet, dry, and perfumed with burning sage, desert incense, and lavender-scented steam, catering to caravan masters, geomancers, and high-tier desert wanderers.
      • Purchasing Cost: Sandshrine elders and elite antiquarians offer the carapace as a consecrated vessel of balance and hospitality for 2,400 to 2,800 Platinum Coins in certified bank drafts or equivalent high-tier trade goods (such as refined ores and purified elemental salts).
      • Selling to Shopkeeper: The curators inspect the hourglass seal and the temperament of the bound Domovoi spirit, paying approximately 1,200 to 1,400 Platinum credited to the seller’s World Bank ledger to support local shrine operations.
    • Dockside Free-Hauler Bazaars and Salvage Caravanserais:
      • Hidden in the rough-and-tumble outer rings of industrial foundry towns, pirate coves, or remote desert oases where transactions bypass municipal trade inspectors and formal tax ledgers.
      • The vibe is noisy, gritty, and opportunistic, filled with the clatter of steam pistons and the smell of sulfur and coal smoke.
      • Purchasing Cost: Transacted entirely in hard, physical metal coinage or direct barter without World Bank logging. Due to black-market demand and transport scarcity, independent brokers charge a premium of 3,000 to 3,500 Platinum Coins in physical metal (30,000 to 35,000 Gold pieces).
      • Selling to Shopkeeper: Salvage merchants offer 1,000 to 1,250 Platinum in unmarked coin. If a regional blockade, dust-storm season, or deep-sea salvage campaign creates an urgent demand for a heavy-duty, self-cleaning cargo rig, unscrupulous brokers will pay upwards of 2,000 to 2,200 Platinum in physical coin to secure the unit immediately.

Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Defense and Offense with Carapace 734

  • Urban High-Courts, Municipal Districts, and Elite Boutiques:
    • Defensive Applications: In patrolled city centers where Armor Check is doubled or tripled, the wearer projects aristocratic invulnerability. The spotless micro-barrier keeps expensive tailored garments pristine while soot, rain, and mud slide away instantly. When confrontational rivals or pickpockets approach within the 10-foot household radius, the Domovoi spirit alerts the wearer with a haughty hiss, making surprise impossible. Foes hesitate to strike due to the unwarranted superiority posture, treating the avatar as an unassailable authority.
    • Offensive Applications: In commercial hearings or contract disputes, the avatar activates the Projected Tally to scan an opponent’s attire and wares, projecting blue data overlays that list depreciation, forgeries, and substandard crafting in real time. The wearer delivers scathing critiques that dismantle an adversary’s confidence and social standing. If physical combat breaks out, the avatar chants briefly to unleash a burst of lavender-scented steam, shoving ill-mannered opponents backward into ornamental fountains or security barricades.
  • Lightless Ocean Depths, Sunken Ruins, and Submerged Reefs:
    • Defensive Applications: Deep beneath the waves where light cannot penetrate, the shell crest emanates a soothing cyan and aquamarine bioluminescence that illuminates treacherous coral chasms and sunken bulkheads. The thermal regulation barrier neutralizes the freezing chill of the abyss, while the serene anchor provides unyielding balance against crushing undertows. When predatory aquatic leviathans lunge from the darkness, the avatar triggers the Bioluminescent Flare, discharging a blinding flash that dazzles the beast and gives the avatar half-cover to maneuver.
    • Offensive Applications: Navigating sunken galleons or drowned vaults, the wearer uses the Grains of Clarity to scan through silt, sea-mud, and collapsed hulls, identifying buried treasure chests and structurally compromised bulkheads. When engaged in underwater melee, the Rapid Inventory Inject snaps harpoons, nets, or alchemical depth-charges directly into the avatar’s hands without losing swimming momentum, allowing for sudden and calculated counterattacks.
  • Sun-Scorched Deserts, Shifting Dunes, and Sandstorms:
    • Defensive Applications: In open desert terrain during violent sandstorms, the wearer remains completely unaffected by the scouring wind. The thermal buffer absorbs blistering daytime heat to prevent dehydration and sunstroke, while the weightless burden allows the avatar to stride across loose, steep dunes without sinking. The Enduring Patience passive anchors the mind against panic, turning howling winds into distant white noise as the sand inside the brass hourglass falls in a rhythmic, stabilizing trickle.
    • Offensive Applications: In combat against dune-stalkers or raiders, the avatar uses the Grains of Clarity to spot enemies lurking beneath the sand or hiding behind dust veils. By deploying the Fiscal Shield when targeted from the flank, the glass tubes discharge a dense cloud of blue audit mist that crystallizes into glowing numbers, absorbing the full brunt of incoming strikes. The avatar then uses the mechanical servo-arms to rapidly dispense throwing weapons or alchemical fire, crushing the ambushing raiders through disciplined resource management.
  • Subterranean Foundry Megacities, Rail Tunnels, and Magma Mines:
    • Defensive Applications: Inside cramped, lightless subterranean tunnels filled with coal smoke and grinding machinery, the carapace acts as a mobile fortress. The spotless barrier repels caustic industrial soot, hot oil, and toxic fumes. The sensory grid maps ground vibrations through the bedrock, alerting the wearer to burrowing beasts or structural cave-ins well before they manifest. If struck by falling rock or heavy tunnel machinery, the amortized lattice absorbs the kinetic shock across the brass plates, deflecting lethal crushing blows like an iron vault door.
    • Offensive Applications: In narrow mine shafts, the avatar leverages the massive carrying capacity to transport heavy ordnance, mining tools, or barricade plating at full running speed. The avatar charges forward into enemy formations as an unstoppable logistical vanguard, using the mechanical servo-arms to eject explosive charges directly into enemy defensive nests while maintaining a steady forward momentum.
  • Deathly Zones and High-Mana Scars:
    • Defensive Applications: In zones of total lethality where Armor Check is reduced to zero and every physical blow connects automatically, conventional armor deflection fails. The wearer relies entirely on proactive damage mitigation and resource endurance. The Fiscal Shield protocol absorbs heavy impacts by converting kinetic force into computational debt, while the Serene Ripple removes mental disorientation and panic from allies. The Rapid Inventory Inject instantly retrieves life-saving healing draughts and shielding talismans the exact second they are needed, ensuring the avatar outlasts the encounter.
    • Offensive Applications: In chaotic environments where wild magic distorts space, the avatar channels the combined power of the geomantic sand and the clockwork lattice to impose rigid order on the battlefield. Using the ruby lens and audit grid, the wearer identifies the exact fracture lines of corrupted constructs or eldritch anomalies. The avatar directs high-impact strikes with absolute geometric certainty, systematically dismantling high-tier monstrosities as line items in an inescapable ledger of liquidation.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight: Upon engaging the gear-lock, the upper dorsal shells flare with an ethereal cyan-and-aquamarine radiance that illuminates the periphery in soft underwater light. Simultaneously, a sharp crimson beam projects from the central ruby lens, casting an amber-and-blue wireframe grid across the environment that outlines room boundaries, load weights, hidden compartments, and structural depreciation numbers in scrolling numeric script.
  • Hearing: A sharp, pressurized hiss resembling a haughty “tsk” vents from the micro-steam core, followed immediately by the internal, rhythmic ticking of brass clockwork gears and the smooth, continuous trickle of consecrated Amratian sand through the glass hourglass. When the servo-arms engage, a crisp, pneumatic hiss-clack vibrates along the spine.
  • Touch: The leather harness cinches firmly around the torso and shoulders with the sensation of a tailored diving suit, locking the spine into a rigid, commanding posture. A chilled, pressurized micro-cushion forms one inch above the skin, instantly neutralizing sweat, mud, and external temperature extremes, while the physical weight of carried cargo suddenly feels completely weightless, as if floating in a stabilized magnetic pocket.
  • Smell: A crisp, sterilized fragrance fills the lungs, blending high-grade beeswax polish and dried lavender with the mineral scent of sun-baked desert sand, fresh ocean salt mist, and clean pressurized steam.
  • Taste: A subtle metallic tang rests on the palate—resembling cold copper coin—intertwined with the faint, refreshing cleanliness of filtered glacial water.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Sanctuary Perimeter Sense: The avatar intuitively feels the exact boundaries of a 10-foot sphere surrounding them, registering any entering entity, projectile, or airborne debris as an “uninvited intrusion” in an immaculate room.
    • Seismic and Hydro-Resonant Intuition: Ground vibrations through stone or sand and hydrodynamic ripples through water are felt directly along the back plating, mapping unseen paths, subterranean water sources, and hidden floor traps.
    • Sympathetic Inventory Awareness: The avatar experiences a phantom neural link to every piece of registered gear, knowing the exact count, condition, and location of every item stored within their packs without looking.
    • Temporal Stillness: The cadence of falling sand acts as a psychic metronome, slowing down the perceived chaos of combat and allowing the mind to evaluate complex battlefield variables with detached mathematical precision.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight: Onlookers witness the dorsal shells erupt in a brilliant, bioluminescent sea-glow, flanked by glowing blue tubes of audit-ink and the amber silhouette of shifting sand. The wearer’s posture instantly straightens into an imposing, aristocratic stance, while a red focal light scans out from the ruby lens. A faint heat shimmer and translucent barrier hover one inch off the wearer’s garments, causing dirt and water to bead and roll away instantly.
  • Hearing: A sharp, disdainful steam hiss cuts through the air, followed by a low, hypnotic mechanical ticking that sounds like coins being counted inside a stone vault, accompanied by the quiet hum of miniature hydraulic servos.
  • Touch: Those within ten feet feel a sudden, steadying drop in air turbulence and a gentle wave of dry, warm pressure, followed by a slight, invigorating breeze that carries away localized humidity and stagnant heat.
  • Smell: The immediate vicinity is filled with the distinct aroma of luxury lavender soap, polished brass, and fresh sea air, completely overpowering nearby odors of rot, swamp gas, or burning pitch.
  • Taste: Nearby individuals register a faint static dryness on the back of their tongue as the pressurized micro-steam barrier purges particulates from the immediate airspace.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Aura of Supreme Order: Spellcasters and empaths sense an overwhelming field of structured law and severe domestic pride radiating from the back rig, projecting an intense psychological barrier that makes attacking the wearer feel like a disgraceful act of insubordination.
    • Resonant Ground Pulse: Creatures standing on loose sand or submerged in water detect a steady, rhythmic thrum pulsing through the terrain, indicating an immovable physical and mental center.

Positives

  • Increases cargo carrying capacity by 50% without encumbrance penalties, completely eliminating muscle strain and fatigue over long journeys.
  • Grants instant, action-free item retrieval during combat through automated mechanical servo-arms.
  • Provides continuous environmental immunity to filth, mud, extreme desert heat, and freezing aquatic cold via a self-cleaning micro-barrier.
  • Detects hidden pathways, buried treasures, and structural traps while providing 360-degree awareness against surprise attacks within 10 feet.
  • Offers instant defensive damage absorption through the Fiscal Shield and tactical illumination in dark or underwater environments.
  • Combines four distinct utility and logistical frameworks into a single physical object occupying strictly one gear slot.

Negatives

  • The bright cyan glow and glowing blue audit-tubes make optical stealth nearly impossible in darkened environments.
  • The constant, audible mechanical ticking and pressurized steam hissing can alert sound-sensitive predators and vigilant sentries.
  • The overwhelming scent of lavender and polished brass acts as a distinct olfactory trail for tracking beasts across wilderness zones.
  • The rigid posture enforcement and continuous whispering critique from the Domovoi spirit can induce social friction and mental fatigue during prolonged casual interactions.
  • The data overlay from the projected tally can induce analysis paralysis if the avatar focuses too heavily on financial calculations during rapid combat encounters.

    • Glassblowing / Geomancy: Skill Level 9
    • Alchemy / Spirit Binding: Skill Level 9
    • Mind’s Eye (Active Activation / Identify): Skill Level 9
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Frame Smelting and Dorsal Pressing: Heat the naval brass plates and the brass framework of the Humps 812 in the steam-forge until malleable. Place the alloy into the heavy steam-press, pumping the pressure valve to a steady marching cadence to form a single, contoured dorsal carapace plate with integrated housing sockets for the hourglass, condenser, and shell mounts.
    • Clockwork and Servo-Arm Fabrication: Assemble the six gold-inlaid gears and copper wire into a recursive logic lattice within the lower dorsal plate. Connect the articulated, spring-loaded mechanical servo-arms to the lateral gear tracks, lubricating all pivots with clockmaker’s oil to ensure instant item retrieval.
    • Condenser and Spirit Core Integration: Mount the micro-steam condenser core from the Domovoi brooch into the upper center of the brass housing. Combine the pure glacial water and elemental fire salts within the reinforced glass core chamber, carefully venting the micro-pipes to achieve the precise steam-hiss calibration. Set the precision ruby lens directly above the condenser vent as the primary focal optic.
    • Hourglass Reshaping and Sand Consecration: Using the glassblowing pipe, heat and join the alchemical glass bulbs from the Sifting Stillness into a reinforced central vessel. Infuse the Amratian sand in a basin with the geomantic tuning fork until glowing with amber resonance, pour the grains into the vessel inside a Still Chamber, and seal both ends with brass end-caps using the heat-activated caulking resin. Mount the hourglass vertically along the center spine.
    • Fluid Conduits and Shell Grafting: Clean the bioluminescent shells from the bracers, coat them inside and out with the preservative resin and enchanted sea salt mixture, and set them into the upper curved shoulders of the brass carapace. Fill the lateral glass tubes with the blue vitriol audit-fluid, sealing them with copper caps and routing the hydraulic copper wire to the central logic lattice.
    • Harness Underlay and Padding: Cut the cured aurochs leather to fit the underside of the brass carapace. Punch suture holes with the awl while reciting the Porter’s Litany, and stitch the leather to the metal frame using heavy gut-thread, inserting shock-absorbing padding to transfer sensory data directly to the wearer’s spine.
    • Spirit Binding and Catalyst Transmutation: Place the assembled carapace upon the royal blue velvet. Suspend the Tier-4 magic crystal above the structure. Pour the Essence of Order across the ruby lens while reciting the Standards of High Society and Balanced Ledgers. Channel mana through the crystal into all four linked frameworks simultaneously for forty-five minutes until the crystal discharges an electric-blue and cyan pulse, permanently fusing the components into a single, unified back-slot artifact.
    • Mind’s Eye Verification: Perform an active Mind’s Eye inspection to confirm that the spotless micro-barrier engages, the audit mist pressurizes, the bioluminescent glow shifts smoothly, and the servo-arms deploy on mental command.

Proud Shell-Back and Unbending Scales of Deep Dune

In the age when the great water-under-the-world had not yet decided if it was ocean or boiling rock, and when the sixty-and-thirteen island-stones were still floating like dry seed-pods upon the blue skin of the world, there lived a master of the tally-iron whose name was lost to the salt-eaters. He had a great hump upon his meat-shoulders, like the two-mountain beast of the dry-plains, and his eyes were small and sharp like the needles used by the silk-sewers.

This master did not look upon the world with love-thoughts. When he looked upon the great stone palaces of the water-lords, he saw only that the floor was not swept with broom-twigs. When he looked upon the high kings who ate fat fish from gold plates, he whispered through his teeth: “This fish has three rotten spots upon its belly, and the gold plate is two finger-weights lighter than the law-book demands.” He was a man with a very small house in his heart, and in this house, no dirt was permitted to sit upon the bench.

In those sun-cycles, the people of the deep-sea trenches and the people of the screaming-dunes were making great war with iron-spears and wet-knives. The deep-sea raiders came up from the black trenches where the water has no sun. They carried the ghost-shells of the weeping sea-maiden, which burned with the cold blue-green fire that shows where the dead men sleep. The dune-bandits came from the dry-wastes, throwing the burning sand that fills the breath-holes of the living. Between them lay the Great Highway of Copper, where forty thousand wagons of grain, salt, and sacred oils were stalled in the choking mud.

The great caravan-master, who had the spirit of the hearth-fire and the spirit of the counting-slate locked inside his bone-box, saw that the wagons were falling into the ditch. The porters were weeping because the water-jugs were dry, and their backs were broken by the weight of the unpaid iron. The bandits screamed from the rocks, and the deep-sea beasts tore at the wheels from the wet salt-pools.

The master said to his hands: “I will make the one true shell. It will not be a saddle for a mule, and it will not be a dish for soup. It will be the unmoving house that walks.”

He took forty weights of the yellow ship-brass that does not rust when the salt-wind bites. He took the skin of the great wild aurochs that had been soaked in the black ink of the court-scribes. Into the great fire of the steam-bellows he threw the blue glass vials that hold the electric vitriol, and he stole the two pearled shells from the hands of the drowned water-maiden while the moon was hiding behind the mountain of smoke.

Then, from the deep temple where the monks sit upon the four stone boxes and make their breath as slow as falling honey, he took the glass hourglass that holds the sleeping-dirt of the first desert. This dirt was not like the biting sand of the storms; it was the sand that fell when the first god stopped speaking, the sand that knows only the silence of the stone.

Lastly, the master went to the haughty hearth-spirit that lived in the highest chimney of the king’s kitchen. The spirit was very angry, for the kitchen-boys had dropped grease upon the hearthstones. The master held up a tiny red stone of cut glass and a vessel of pressurized steam that smelled of dried purple flowers.

“Enter this brass house,” said the master to the spirit. “Inside, there is no grease. There are no dirty aprons. There is only the clicking of the gold teeth-wheels and the cold measurement of the world.”

The spirit entered the red glass eye with a loud hiss like an angry snake.

For seventy-seven sun-risings, the master hammered the metal upon the great steam-anvil. He pressed the yellow brass until it curved like the two-hump back of the great beast. He mounted the glowing sea-shells upon the high shoulders of the armor so they would shine like the cold eyes of the drowned. He fixed the glass hourglass down the middle spine, where the sleeping-dirt fell grain by grain, counting the heartbeat of the stone. Along the sides he hung the blue audit-tubes, and from the lower joints he grew two long iron arms that moved with the hiss of boiling water.

When the work was finished, he strapped the heavy brass shell upon his own humps.

The leather bit into his ribs like the jaw of an ox, but suddenly, the master did not feel the weight of his meat. The forty pounds of brass and the forty wagons of grain behind him felt like a single feather floating upon a still pond. A thin skin of pressurized, invisible air wrapped around his body; when the red dust of the road blew against his face, it turned to nothing and fell to the ground, leaving his linen tunic as white as fresh milk.

He walked out into the middle of the Great Highway where the two armies were hacking each other with rusted iron.

The raiders of the deep-sea ran toward him, their coral-knives raised to split his belly. But the master did not draw a sword. He stood upright, his back straight as an iron pillar. The ruby eye upon his neck flared with a cold, judgmental light. The micro-condenser let out a sharp, terrible “TSK!” that echoed across the hills like the crack of a teamster’s whip.

“Your stance is vulgar,” the master spoke, and his voice was carried by the lavender-steam into the ears of the killers. “Your blades are covered in common fish-grease, and your debt to the road is unpaid. You are clutter upon the floor of the world.”

The sea-raiders hesitated. Their arms became heavy with sudden shame. They looked at their mud-stained feet and felt as if they were filthy beggars standing before the high throne of the Sun King. Before they could take a step, the master’s brass shell vented a great wave of scalding steam that shoved the front line ten paces back into the marsh, their weapons clattering upon the stones.

Then came the dune-bandits, fifty men riding upon the screaming lizards, shooting black iron arrows at his spine.

The master did not turn his head. When the arrows were one hand-span from the brass plates, the glass vials on his shoulders shattered with a sound like a ringing bell. A dense fog of glowing blue audit-mist poured out over his back. The mist hardened into a wall of solid, shining numbers, calculating the velocity of the arrows and liquidating their force into zero. The arrows struck the blue numbers and fell to the earth as harmless twigs.

From the sides of the harness, the mechanical servo-arms snapped forward with a blinding hiss-clack. They did not strike with fists; they reached into the baggage-crates upon his back and handed the master two heavy alchemical thunder-jars. The master tossed the jars into the midst of the lizard-riders, and the road erupted in white lightning, scattering the raiders like dry leaves in a gale.

The master turned his gaze upon the hourglass resting between his shoulder-blades. The consecrated golden sand was flowing steadily, whispering the ancient chant of Zephara. The panic that had gripped the thousand merchant-wagons died away. The oxen stopped their bellowing; the horses ceased their trembling. A wave of profound stillness spread outward from the brass carapace, settling over the road like a heavy woolen blanket.

The master raised his hand. The blue-green shells on his shoulders blazed with an intense, piercing sea-radiance that pierced through the choking dust-clouds and the black river-mists.

“The inventory is taken,” the master declared, pointing down the straight stone road. “The path is clear. Walk with measured steps, and let no man drop a single grain of rice into the ditch.”

The great caravan moved forward. For three hundred leagues, through the boiling salt-marsh and across the glass-wastes where the earth screams, the master walked at the front. He never sweated the water of his body, for the brass tubes drank his breath and gave it back as pure ice-water. He never slept in the dirt, for the Domovoi spirit kept the 10-foot circle around his feet as clean as a marble temple. He never dropped a single coin, for the iron arms watched over every crate and box with mechanical greed.

When they reached the Golden City of the King, the forty thousand wagons were intact. Not a single mule had died of thirst; not a single bolt of silk was stained by the road-mud.

The King came down from his high seat and offered the master a mountain of red gold and a crown of sea-pearls.

The master looked upon the King’s crown, adjusted the leather straps across his chest, and watched the sand trickle through the glass tube on his back. He did not bow.

“Your crown is crooked by three degrees, O King,” said the master, while the steam from his brooch hissed in disdain. “And your throne-room floor has five grease-spots near the doorway. Clean your house, so that the numbers of your kingdom may finally balance.”

He turned his back upon the gold and walked out of the gates, his brass shells glowing like an unblinking eye in the dusk, forever carrying the burden of the counted truth across the crooked roads of the world.

Moral of the Story

The storm of the world cannot overturn the soul that carries its own order; he who keeps his ledger true, his spirit anchored in the quiet sand, and his house spotless from the filth of deceit will walk through both the deepest abyss and the hottest desert without dropping a single grain of his worth.
