Lore
- In the rugged frontiers and forgotten border ruins of Saṃsāra, truths are rarely hidden behind locked vaults alone; more often, they are buried beneath broken promises, lingering resentments, and unpaid blood debts that rot in secret.
- Search magic among frontier dowsers and bitter scavengers long ago diverged from pure, serene clairvoyance into an art of emotional resonance—locating that which was deliberately abandoned, hoarded in greed, or concealed out of spite.
- Lineage designation 734 belongs to a series of hand-held inspection loupes originally ground by renegade mint-assayers and aggrieved estate adjudicators who spent their lives uncovering the hollow cores of counterfeit coin and the hidden clauses of exploitative tithes.
- Imbued with the concentrated humors of gall, wormwood, and unsweetened mountain tea, these lenses reveal concealed hollows, false walls, and buried metal by responding to the acidic “taste” of malice and deceit left upon objects.
- Avatars who rely on this loupe often develop a sharp tongue and a cynical disposition, knowing that whenever something lost is finally found, it almost always brings an acrid reminder of why it was hidden in the first place.
Description
- The item is a four-inch hand-held jeweler’s and assayer’s inspection loupe fashioned from tarnished, acid-etched pinchbeck bronze, bearing shallow engravings of withered wormwood stalks along its swiveling teardrop handle.
- The casing encloses a thick, dual-ground lens cut from pale smoky quartz, stained around its circumference with a faint yellow-green rim of crystallized mountain ox-bile.
- A tiny Tier 1 magic crystal—a cloudy, yellow-green prasiolite chip—is embedded directly into the pivot hinge, pulsing with a faint, sour warmth whenever the wielder narrows their gaze through the glass.
- Peering through the lens does not clarify colors; rather, it leeches warm hues into jaundiced grays and acidic greens, causing hidden seams, false bottoms, and concealed items to stand out with an oily, bilious sheen.
- Suspended from the swivel loop by a frayed cord of rough black hemp is a dried gallnut that rattles softly with a dry, hollow click whenever the glass detects hidden metal or masked spaces.
- The entire piece gives off the persistent, sharp odor of crushed wormwood leaves, stale vinegar, dried gall, and cold copper tarnish.

Passive Magic
- Acrid Taste of the Concealed:
- When holding or wearing the loupe within 10 feet of a deliberately concealed object, hidden compartment, false floorboard, or secret door, a sharp, bitter gall-taste fills the back of the wielder’s mouth, and the suspended gallnut begins to vibrate faintly against the bronze casing.
- Cynic’s Discerning Gaze:
- Peering through the smoky quartz lens grants the bearer an acute sensitivity to counterfeit materials, hollow castings, diluted metals, and disguised paper seals; mundane checks to appraise values, detect forged signatures, or spot structural hollows in stone and wood are rolled with a noticeable intuitive clarity, stripping away superficial luster.
- Jaundiced Mien:
- The sour spiritual resonance of the loupe shields the user’s mind from honeyed words, false flattery, and magical charms; the bearer gains a persistent edge against being seduced, pacified, or deceived by overt displays of cheerfulness and false benevolence.
Active Magic
- Bilious Seam-Flare:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wielder raises the loupe to the eye, twists the swiveling pinchbeck casing, and whispers a caustic proverb of unrequited toil.
- Effect: The wielder sends an invisible wave of sour search energy out in a 30-foot cone. For 1 minute, any hidden compartments, disguised pit traps, secret doors, or camouflaged lock mechanisms in that cone flare with an oily, bright yellow-green outline visible only to the bearer.
- Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.
- Rancor’s Magnetic Pull:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wielder presses the prasiolite hinge against their temple, visualizes an item they have lost, had stolen, or are legally owed, and speaks aloud the name of the grievance.
- Effect: For 10 minutes, the loupe pulls like a bitter compass needle toward the named object (or the nearest stash of precious metal, hoarded coin, or concealed key within 100 feet). The pull grows colder and heavier in the hand the closer the bearer approaches the cache, ignoring non-magical barriers up to 2 feet of solid wood or earth.
- Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.
- The Sour Epiphany:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wielder draws a deep breath of bitter wormwood vapor, aligns the smoky quartz lens with an unfamiliar object, cipher, or person, and raps the bronze housing against a fingernail.
- Effect: The lens strips away superficial illusions and mundane disguises on the target for 1 round, revealing the most recent instance of spite, greed, or betrayal attached to the subject as a brief psychic flash accompanied by an overwhelming taste of bitter ash. If used against a shapechanger or magically disguised target within 15 feet, it forces the target to make a DC 12 Willpower or Wisdom save; on a failure, the disguise flickers with a sour green haze for 1 round, revealing their true silhouette to all observers.
- Cooldown: Usable once per in-game day.
Specific Gear Slot
- Neck Slot (Worn via the black hemp cord, or wielded in the hand during active scrying)

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- Sight:
- Raising the smoky quartz lens to the eye leeches all warm, vibrant tones out of the field of view, replacing reds, ambers, and golds with dull jaundiced grays and sickly parchment whites.
- The cloudy prasiolite chip at the pivot hinge pulses with an acidic, yellow-green fluorescence that casts a faint circular corona around the glass.
- Hidden mortise lines, hollow floorboards, secret latch pins, and concealed compartments flare with an oily, radioactive-looking chartreuse highlight, standing out against mundane masonry or timber like glowing bile on stone.
- Sound:
- The dried gallnut hanging from the black hemp cord begins to vibrate rapidly, producing a dry, rhythmic, hollow clacking against the pinchbeck casing as it aligns with hidden metal or voids.
- A subtle, high-pitched ringing like vinegar poured onto heated zinc sounds in the inner ear whenever an intentional falsehood, disguise, or hidden hollow is brought into focus.
- Touch:
- The tarnished pinchbeck handle turns faintly greasy and cold, while the prasiolite hinge radiates a dry, sour fever-warmth directly against the user’s thumb and index knuckle.
- A sharp, tingling numbness crawls across the cheekbone and brow surrounding the eye pressed to the loupe, as if the skin were being bathed in strong astringent wash.
- Smell:
- The wielder’s nostrils fill with a pungent, biting mixture of crushed wormwood leaves, stale vinegar, drying animal gall, and cold copper verdigris, completely masking pleasant ambient fragrances.
- Taste:
- An intense, unmistakable bitterness coats the tongue and the back of the soft palate—tasting precisely of raw ox-bile, steeped dandelion roots, and unsweetened black tea, inducing a sudden, sharp salivation.

- Grudge Resonance: The user feels an intuitive, emotional drag toward hidden objects, sensing the lingering trace of spite, covetousness, fear of loss, or parsimony left behind by whoever originally buried or locked away the item.
- Illusory Transparency: Surface glamours and mundane disguises feel papery, hollow, and brittle to the mind’s eye, instinctively registering as cheap veneer waiting to be chipped away.
- Cynical Lucidity: A chilling, dispassionate clarity settles over the user’s reasoning, stripping away optimism, wishful thinking, and gullibility, reducing complex social interactions to basic calculations of debt, leverage, and distrust.
- Sight:
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Sight:
- Observers notice the tiny prasiolite crystal at the hinge suddenly glow with an eerie, sour-green luminescence that reflects sharply off the operator’s cheek and pupil.
- The smoky quartz lens briefly flashes with an oily, iridescent sheen, resembling the slick surface of standing bile or stagnant ditch scum.
- When actively scanning an area, observers see a faint, translucent cone of sickly green light project out from the glass across surfaces, catching the edge of disguised seams with faint, luminescent dust motes.
- Sound:
- A faint, unnerving rattle—the dried gallnut vibrating against metal—breaks the silence with an irregular, insectoid clicking sound.
- The wielder often mutters dryly or smacks their lips in instinctive distaste as the bitter surge hits their palate.
- Touch:
- Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the wielder, an observer feels a faint, clammy draft emanate from the bronze casing, like a cellar door opening into cold, stagnant air.
- Smell:
- A distinct whiff of medicinal astringent, stale wine vinegar, and crushed bitter weeds drifts outward from the user, sharp enough to wrinkle noses in close proximity.
- Taste:
- Nearby companions experience a faint, dry metallic sourness on the edges of their teeth, reminiscent of licking an old copper token.
- Extra-Sensory Perception:
- Observers sense an immediate drop in emotional warmth from the bearer; the wielder’s posture and tone become distinctly uncharitable, suspicious, and hyper-critical, projecting a palpable aura of skeptical scrutiny that puts nearby deceivers instinctively on edge.

- Positives:
- Flawless Structural Penetration:
- Completely pierces physical camouflage, false bottoms, hidden sliding panels, and disguised masonry seams, eliminating the need for tedious manual searching.
- Intuitive Hoard and Metal Tracking:
- Senses the magnetic pull of concealed metal, buried coin-purses, and debt tokens through solid wood, stone, and earth without requiring prior visual contact.
- Inherent Anti-Charm Shielding:
- The overwhelming mental cynicism and sensory bitterness render the user resistant to honeyed deceptions, theatrical pity plays, and low-tier enchantment/charm effects.
- Disguise and Glamour Detection:
- Causes magical disguises, ciphers, and shapechanged silhouettes to flicker visibly, exposing hidden identities and counterfeit wares.
- Flawless Structural Penetration:
- Negatives:
- Lingering Physical Revulsion:
- The intense taste of bitter gall and sour vinegar persists in the mouth long after the loupe is lowered, occasionally inducing dry heaves or dulling the taste of food and drink for hours.
- Tunnel-Vision Color Bleed:
- Stripping warm colors away makes it difficult to read colored heraldry, distinguish between delicate chemical dyes, or notice heat-based hazards while peering through the glass.
- Acoustic and Olfactory Exposure:
- The rattling gallnut and biting vinegar-and-wormwood stench can alert vigilant guards, hunting hounds, or alert sentries in pitch-black or silent stealth conditions.
- Interpersonal Friction:
- Prolonged attunement and repeated activation tend to bleed into the avatar’s speech, making them sound chronically resentful, cynical, and abrasive during delicate diplomatic encounters.
- Lingering Physical Revulsion:
Crafting Recipe: Bile-Stained Divining Loupe
- Materials Needed:
- 1 thick blank of pale smoky quartz, approximately two inches in diameter, free of structural fractures but bearing natural clouding.
- 1 Tier 1 magic crystal (a cloudy, yellow-green prasiolite chip cut into a flat-backed cabochon, roughly the size of a dried lentil).
- 3 ounces of pinchbeck bronze alloy (a cold-working mix of high-purity copper and zinc).
- 1 dried mountain oak gallnut with an intact inner wasp gall-seed (must produce a dry rattle when shaken).
- 1 eighteen-inch length of rough, hand-twisted black hemp cord.
- 2 drams of mountain ox-bile, concentrated through slow evaporation into a dark, greenish-amber syrup.
- 1 ounce of dried, crushed wormwood leaves (artemisia) mixed with stale cider vinegar (used for chemical etching and the attuning wash).
- 1 small vial of copperas (iron sulfate dissolved in sour wine, used for staining the bezel perimeter).
- Tools Required:
- 1 Lapidary grinding wheel and leather polishing laps with corundum and cerium oxide grits.
- 1 Jeweler’s piercing saw and fine-gauge spiral jewelers’ blades.
- 1 Set of precision chasing chisels, gravers, and needle files (for engraving the wormwood motifs).
- 1 Hand-cranked pin-vise drill with miniature spade-bits (for boring the gallnut and hinge hole).
- 1 Small jewelers’ brazing torch or alcohol lamp with borax flux.
- 1 Clay etching trough and horsehair dauber brush.
- Skill Requirements:
- Lapidary & Lens-Grinding: Minimum skill rank of 3 (required to achieve the dual-ground convex focus in smoky quartz without chipping the crystalline planes).
- Metalsmithing & Jewelers’ Joinery: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required for casting, acid-etching the pinchbeck casing, and tuning the friction-fit swivel hinge).
- Assaying & Tincture Preparation: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to concentrate animal gall and bitter wormwood extracts into an active chemical mordant).
- Mind’s Eye Divination / Search Magic: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to bind the emotional current of cynical detection and spiteful scrutiny into the prasiolite core).
- Crafting Steps:
- Grinding and Bile-Treating the Lens:
- Take the rough blank of pale smoky quartz and grind it on the lapidary wheel to a dual-convex curvature with a two-inch focal length.
- Progress through grinding grits up to a smooth 1200-grit matte finish, then polish the central visual field with cerium oxide while leaving a rough one-sixteenth-inch band unpolished around the rim.
- Paint the unpolished circumference with the concentrated ox-bile syrup blended with copperas and vinegar.
- Gently heat the lens over a low alcohol flame until the bile crystallizes into an indelible, sour yellow-green crust fused to the crystal rim.
- Fabricating the Pinchbeck Casing and Swivel Handle:
- Cast and hammer the pinchbeck bronze into two nesting elements: a round grooved bezel to encase the lens and a swiveling teardrop outer casing that protects the glass when closed.
- Use gravers to cut shallow relief lines of withered, drooping wormwood stalks along the teardrop cover.
- Submerge the bronze casing in the vinegar-and-wormwood etching bath for two hours until the metal develops a dull, acid-tarnished olive-brown patina.
- Drill matching pivot holes through the bezel neck and handle head, then test the swiveling friction to ensure a firm, smooth opening swing.
- Setting the Prasiolite Hinge and Suspension Cord:
- Form a hollow cylindrical pivot rivet with a tiny open bezel cup on its top face.
- Insert the rivet through the swivel hinge of the loupe and spread the back lip with a center punch to secure the moving parts without loosening.
- Set the cloudy yellow-green prasiolite chip into the rivet’s open bezel cup, burnishing the bronze edge over the crystal to lock it directly above the pivot point.
- Drill a fine hole through the top stem of the dried gallnut, thread the rough black hemp cord through it, knot it securely, and tie the cord to the lanyard loop on the bottom of the pinchbeck handle.
- Satsnakheli Search-Binding and Attunement:
- Submerge the assembled loupe in a shallow bowl of cold, unsweetened wormwood tea steeped with three drops of ox-bile.
- Place an unpaid debt note, a clipped counterfeit coin, or an unresolved grievance token directly beneath the glass bowl.
- Direct your Mind’s Eye into the prasiolite hinge crystal, focusing with cold scrutiny on the underlying deceit and greed inherent in the world.
- Channel energy until the prasiolite chip flares with a faint, sour-green warmth, the gallnut rattles against the casing, and an intense taste of bitter bile coats the craftsman’s tongue, sealing the enchantment into the frame.

River-Gate Concerning Squinting Clerk, Iron-Hearted Usurer of Salt-Wharf, and Eye That Drank No Honey
In the cycles before the dry ledger was bound with copper thread, when the river-kings still measured an acre of barley by the length of an ox’s horn, there was no truth left in the bazaar of the seven sluices. The tongue of the bread-seller was smeared with mutton-tallow to make his false measures slide softly across the board; the weight-maker cast his lead with hollow hollows in the belly of the stone; and the tithe-gatherer carried two wooden rulers—one long for the taking, and one short for the giving back to the temple.
In those days, upon the damp flagstones of the salt-dredge canal, sat an aged notary whose name is scratched upon the lead as Vano-the-Unsmiling, though the apprentices called him only the Chewer of Dry Roots. He had no wife, no oxen, and no velvet jacket with silver frogs. He lived in a stone closet beneath the arch of the water-wheel, subsisting upon cold porridge salted with ashes, wild chicory steeped in river-water, and the bitter gall-bladders of mountain oxen which he hung from his roof-timbers upon strings of coarse hemp.
For forty winters, Vano had watched the rich men wash their fingers in rose-water after stealing the milch-cow from the widow, and he had learned that the sweet smile of a merchant is only the lard smeared over a pit-trap.
Now, the chief lord of the lower wharves was a creature of immense tallow named Garsevan-the-Gluttonous. Garsevan possessed nine granaries, three stone warehouses filled with salted sturgeon, and five score iron chests bolted to the bedrock beneath his counting-house. Yet he wept every morning before the altar of the river-saints, tearing his beard and swearing by his grandmother’s bones that he was a beggar without a single copper obol, ruined by the water-blights and unable to pay the wages of the thirty boys who dragged his barges up through the foaming rapids.
“The mud has swallowed my fortune,” Garsevan would groan, showing his empty, open palms to the starving boat-haulers. “If I had but one crust of dry spelt, I would divide it with you; but the salt-worms have eaten through my casks, and my purse is as dry as a shed snake-skin.”
The boys went away with hollow bellies, while Garsevan retired into his inner cellar, behind three doors of boiled bull-hide, to count the bright coins he had shaved from the royal mintings.
It came to pass that the son of the widow Darejan died of the river-shivers, having pulled Garsevan’s lead-barges through the freezing rain for four moons without receiving his promised silver groat. The widow took her torn shawl and stood before Garsevan’s iron gate, crying: “Give me the four silver bits my boy earned with the blood of his lungs, so that I may buy a wooden shroud and three measures of dry dirt to cover his face!”
Garsevan spat into the canal and pointed to the heavens: “May the great river-leech suck the blood from my tongue if I have four silver bits in all the world! I am poorer than the dog that licks the butcher’s door-stone. Go away, old crone, or I shall set the mastiffs upon your skirts!”
Then Vano-the-Unsmiling arose from his stone closet beneath the water-wheel. He did not bring a heavy willow club, nor did he bring a writ from the magistrates, for he knew that the magistrates were fed with fat sturgeon-cheeks from Garsevan’s table.
Beneath his dirty sleeve he held a small glass, no larger than a child’s palm, wrapped in a casing of dull, sour pinchbeck bronze etched with the drooping twigs of the mountain wormwood. The stone within the ring was cut from pale, smoky quartz from the dead gravels of the high moraine, but around its lip was cooked an indelible rim of hardened ox-gall, yellow-green like the eye of an angry badger. At the hinge of the swiveling handle sat a tiny chip of cloudy green prasiolite that felt cold as a drowned pebble; and from its bottom cord dangled a wrinkled gallnut with an iron seed that clicked whenever the wind shifted toward a cheat.
Vano climbed the wet stairs of the wharf, his lips puckered with the sourness of the bitter weed he had been chewing since daybreak.
“What do you bring to my gate, ink-scraper?” shouted Garsevan from his high balcony, holding a roast fowl by the drumstick. “Do you come to write down my ruin upon your rags?”
“I bring an assayer’s eye,” spake Vano, and his voice was like the scraping of a shovel against dry slate. “You have sworn by the river-leech and your mother’s skull that your cellars hold only empty air and dry spiders. If your words are sweet honey, let me read the floor through the smoke of my glass; but if your words are bitter gall, the stone will taste it.”
The merchant laughed until his greasy belly shook the balustrade. “Peer through your spectacle, madman! Look through the floor, look through the dung-heap! If you find one copper bit in this warehouse, you may stuff it into your mouth and choke upon it!”
Vano did not answer. He stepped into the great vaulted shed where Garsevan’s men were sweeping up rotted fish-heads.
He lifted the pinchbeck loupe to his left eye. He did not look for beauty; he did not look for gold with a heart of desire. He drew into his lungs the acrid stench of vinegar and crushed wormwood that lived in the bronze, pressed his tongue against the roof of his mouth, and remembered the thirty years of lies he had entered into the city books.
Immediately, the smoky quartz went blind to the sunlight. The blue of the sky and the warm amber of the lantern-flames died away, turning into the grey muck of winter ditches.
A sharp, foul taste—the raw, stinging bite of gall-bladder and copperas—flooded the old man’s mouth, making his gums bleed sour spit. But as he turned his neck toward the back wall, where Garsevan had piled thirty cords of mouldering birch-logs, the cloudy green chip at the hinge flared with a sickly, jaundiced phosphor.
The dried gallnut began to rattle. Clack-clack-clack, it hammered against the pinchbeck handle, like the bill of a marsh-heron stabbing a frog in the dark.
Through the glass, the solid stone of the floor and the stacked birch-wood vanished into pale shadows; but underneath the flagstones, four cubits down into the gravel, there blazed an oily, yellow-green flame that curled like the grease of an unburied corpse.
Every nail of every iron-bound chest was outlined in the sour chartreuse glare; every shaved rim of every hidden silver disk shone with the bilious light of greed.
“The wood-pile is very warm,” whispered Vano, and his eye narrowed through the cloudy crystal. “It breathes with the breath of ninety thousand stolen groats.”
Garsevan’s face went the color of boiled lard. “He speaks madness! There is nothing beneath the stones but the worms and the old city sewage!”
“Let the iron spade speak,” said Vano.
The town-guards, who were also owed three seasons of bread-money and whose mouths were watering at the smell of the roast fowl, did not wait for the magistrate’s wax seal. They took up the heavy iron levers and the stone-hammers from the wharf. They overturned the mouldering birch-wood; they smashed the four-inch flags of grey schist; and there, buried in the black sand, they dragged forth five iron trunks, their padlocks smeared with tallow to keep out the damp.
When the hinges were broken with the crow-bars, the daylight fell upon heaps of clipped silver, bags of gold-dust stolen from the river-miners, and the three gold cups that had vanished from the chapel of the water-martyrs thirty years before.
Garsevan fell upon his knees in the fish-slime, vomiting his breakfast into the gutter and clawing at the hem of Vano’s greasy coat: “It was a pledge! It was the burial-chest of my cousin! Do not let them take the silver, for without it the breath will leave my heart!”
Vano looked down at the fat usurer through the smoky quartz lens.
He touched the prasiolite hinge with his thumb and spoke the ancient curse of the empty spoon: “You have fed upon the tears of the river-children until your skin is tight as an inflated bladder; now let the taste of your own heart fill your throat.”
A sudden psychic sickness, sharp as unwatered vinegar and bitter as hemlock-milk, leaped through the air from the lens into Garsevan’s eyes.
The usurer screamed, clutching his neck as his mouth filled with the intolerable, oily taste of mountain ox-bile. Every breath he took tasted of copper rust, rotten marsh-grass, and the bitter gall-tea of the dead. He fell forward upon his face, biting the flagstones, unable to swallow the sourness that his own life had brewed.
The town-guards broke open the sacks with their daggers and poured the silver groats into the apron of the widow Darejan until her hempen strings broke under the weight, while the barge-boys filled their caps with coins and ran through the streets shouting the name of the Chewer of Dry Roots.
When the magistrates arrived with their gold-embroidered robes and their copper writing-sticks to confiscate the treasure in the name of the high council, they looked for Vano to give him his tithe-clerk’s share.
But the old man had already tucked the loupe beneath his collar. The gallnut hung quiet against his chest, and his grey lips were drawn tight over his teeth.
“Keep your silver disks,” spake Vano, spitting a dark brown drop of wormwood juice upon the threshold of the counting-house. “A coin is only a piece of dead mountain that men have washed in deceit. When you spend it, it leaves only the smell of copper upon the finger; but the eye that has tasted the gall knows where the thief will hide his next bone.”
He turned back toward his stone arch beneath the water-wheel, and the sour odor of stale vinegar, dried oak-galls, and cold tarnish followed him down the lane like a hungry cur, while the rich men of the wharves went into their closets and double-bolted their chests in terror of the squinting glass.
This record was hammered onto twenty-four strips of salvaged roof-lead by an apprentice of the mint whose brother had died in the barge-chains, and buried beneath the cornerstone of the old weighing-room where no sweet water can wash the metal; but the assayers of the lower market still keep the dried galls upon their scales, and they warn the young clerks never to look upon a king’s promise through the smoky lens lest their morning porridge taste of bile until their dying day.
Moral of the Story
He who seeks truth with a heart craving sweetness will find only the gilded mask that vanity wears to the feast; but he who is willing to swallow the bitter medicine of things as they are shall see through the thickest wall of deceit, for no hoard of stolen treasure can disguise the acrid stench of the malice that put it into the ground.
