Pysanky 519 of the Portcullis Gaze

Lore

  • Commissioned centuries ago by the grand harbormasters of the coastal wharfs in Aterian, this talisman was developed to stem the flow of undeclared black-market contrabands and untaxed cargo crates slipping past customs checkpoints.
  • The crafter, a senior excise officer and artisan, blew the egg of an estuary gull and inscribed it with precise wax-resist geomantic grids, repeating bands of open balances, iron padlocks, and all-seeing eye motifs.
  • The dyes were derived from soot-charcoal, yellow sulfur spring sediments, and crushed crimson marsh lichen, each consecrated over twenty-two hours of steady boiling to bind with the shell’s natural mineral layers.
  • Infused with the ground dust of a coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal, the artifact was formally registered with local city wardens and passed along through generations of honest port gatekeepers to detect hidden compartments, counterfeit goods, and masked valuations.
  • Today, customs assessors, guild inspectors, and watch captains carry these talismans to enforce the collection of state boundary fees, uncovering unlawful smuggling runners who seek to avoid the royal treasury taxes.

Description

  • A large, hollow bird egg about the size of an apple, coated in a resilient, crystal-clear alchemical resin that shields the delicate wax-batik designs beneath.
  • The shell is partitioned into alternating vertical sectors of charcoal black, saffron yellow, and deep brick red, interconnected by fine, unbroken white lines illustrating iron portcullises, counterweights, padlocks, and open scales of justice.
  • The apex and base are capped with fitted bands of tarnished brass, with the upper fitting extending into an open ring loop that allows the egg to be suspended cleanly from an officer’s utility belt or equipment sash.
  • When held or inspected, the egg remains cool to the touch and hums with a faint, rhythmic acoustic cadence that sounds like iron gates latching shut and heavy parchment pages being stamped.
  • Under the glance of the Mind’s Eye, the linework shimmers with a steady amber glow that sharpens when directed toward concealed compartments, hollow bulkheads, or artificially disguised storage containers.

  • Item Hit Points: Avatar’s maximum Hit Points plus 10 (Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
  • Armor Check: 0
  • Weight: 1 pound
  • Attunement: Simple attunement (requires 1 full minute of focus while holding or wearing the egg)

Passive Magic

  • Ledger Clarity: When the bearer examines merchant inventories, cargo manifests, bills of lading, or tax receipts, any altered numbers, erased figures, or forged notary stamps stand out in a faint, phosphorescent green light visible only to the bearer.
  • Contraband Intuition: While openly worn, the talisman alerts the bearer to the presence of concealed illicit goods within 10 feet; the shell vibrates with a faint, prickling chill against the bearer’s hip whenever an intentionally hidden weapon, undeclared pouch, or secret compartment is near.
  • Appraisal Precision: The bearer gains an intuitive understanding of the standard market value of non-magical trade goods, bulk grain, textiles, and mundane equipment, aiding in the immediate calculation of legitimate border crossing taxes and city entry fees.

Activable Magic

  • Reveal the Hidden Seam: As an action, the wearer may tap the brass cap of the egg against a locked trunk, shipping crate, wagon carriage, or cargo barrel. For 10 minutes, any false bottoms, secret compartments, or hollow cavities within the targeted object glow with a visible golden light that shines through up to two inches of mundane wood, canvas, or stone. This ability can be used three times per day.
  • Excise Gaze: By spending an action to focus through the egg while inspecting an individual, wagon, or beast of burden within 30 feet, the bearer activates a sweep that outlines all carried and worn containers, bags, and pouches in pale amber light for 1 minute, revealing their external dimensions and confirming whether they hold magical or non-magical items. This ability can be used twice per day.
  • Seal of the Inspector: As an action, the bearer presses the base of the egg against a lock, latch, crate seam, or cargo clasp to leave an ethereal, glowing wax stamp bearing a portcullis sigil. The seal lasts for 24 hours or until broken; if tampered with or opened by anyone other than the bearer, the seal vanishes and causes the egg to emit a sharp, ringing chime that echoes mentally to the bearer if they are within 1 mile. This ability can be used once per day.

Commerce and Acquisition of Pysanky 519 of the Portcullis Gaze

  • Municipal Harbor Consignment Offices and Port Customs Supply Stations
    • Established directly behind the fortified quays, coastal wharfs, and military docks of coastal cities, these government-operated depots provide specialized equipment to harbormasters, royal excise agents, and city gate watchmen.
    • Transactions here involve strict bureaucratic registry, requiring buyers to present active credentials, guild proof, or an official constable’s badge; each egg is checked against municipal registries using the Mind’s Eye to confirm its resonance and ensure the brass inspection stamps have not been tampered with.
    • The official requisition or purchase cost in these supply stations ranges from 16 to 20 silver coins, with recognized officers of the state military or the city guard receiving a 10% discount per tier level, lowering the cost to roughly 14 to 16 silver coins.
    • When selling an intact talisman back to a port customs office, the assessor haggles within the standard 10% tier margin, transferring approximately 10 to 12 silver coins directly into the seller’s World Bank balance, provided the seller submits to formal questioning regarding how the official instrument was acquired.
  • Family-Owned Locksmith Boutiques and Security Gear Outfitters
    • Situated along the major thoroughfares of large state cities, near trading company warehouses, and around merchant quarter plazas, these independent shops specialize in vault hardware, reinforced chests, chain links, and security detection implements.
    • The item is displayed inside iron-banded display cases alongside mechanical locks, spyglasses, and ledger-keeping supplies, sold to private merchant caravan guards, estate wardens, and warehouse supervisors seeking to protect freight from internal theft.
    • The retail price at an outfitter runs between 14 and 18 silver coins, with registered guild members qualifying for the standard 10% tier-based discount to purchase the talisman for approximately 12 to 14 silver coins.
    • When purchasing the egg from an adventurer, the shopkeeper assesses the shell for cracks or faded wax lines, offering roughly 8 to 10 silver coins deposited into the character’s World Bank account while logging the transaction in the shop’s municipal commerce registry.
  • Frontier Toll-Station Supply Caravans and Border Outposts
    • Located at the outer checkpoints of state boundaries, mountain pass chokepoints, or river crossings where state guards collect the standard 5% transit tax, these mobile supply wagons cater to frontier patrols and garrisoned troops.
    • Transactions take place in open transit camps where traveling supply masters barter directly with outland scouts, mercenary convoys, and border wardens who require reliable gear to detect concealed compartments in wagons passing through desolate territories.
    • Due to the remote location, hazardous delivery routes, and urgent operational need, supply caravan masters charge a marked-up rate of 25 to 30 silver coins (or 2 to 3 gold coins).
    • Outpost traders purchasing the egg from adventurers provide between 7 and 9 silver coins deposited into the seller’s World Bank ledger, aggressively discounting their payout due to the logistical burden of transporting surplus tools back to major urban markets.
  • Subterranean Smuggler Dens and Black-Market Fences
    • Hidden within forgotten sewer cisterns, unmonitored dock vaults, or hidden cellar clubs beneath coastal city wharfs, these illicit networks deal in stolen goods, contraband, and repurposed law-enforcement implements.
    • Fences seek this talisman not only to identify police ambushes and unseal secured vaults, but also to reverse-engineer its detection patterns, study customs frequencies, or deliberately crush the shell to harvest its powdered Tier 1 magic crystal for unregulated crafting.
    • Fences refuse World Bank transactions, demanding strict payment in physical, untracked precious metal coins; the purchase cost ranges between 30 and 40 silver coins (exchanged as 3 to 4 gold coins) with no guild discounts acknowledged.
    • An adventurer selling the talisman to a smuggler fence receives an immediate payout in cold, physical coin—roughly 10 to 12 silver coins, or up to 20 silver coins (2 gold coins) if the dealer has an immediate, desperate demand from a smuggling ring planning to breach the city’s tax cordons.

Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Offensive and Defensive Deployments of Pysanky 519

  • Fortified Harbor Quays and Customs Gatehouses
    • Defensive Utilization: While guarding a crowded wharf perimeter during peak cargo intake, the inspector relies on the talisman’s passive Contraband Intuition. When incoming drovers unload sealed crates, the egg emits a prickling chill against the bearer’s hip, signaling undeclared weapons, concealed poisons, or smuggled contraband hidden beneath mundane fish barrels. The inspector quietly steps back behind the heavy timber barrier, signals fellow gate guards to draw crossbows, and uses Reveal the Hidden Seam to expose the false compartment through the outer planking, preempting a violent dockside ambush before the infiltrators can draw steel.
    • Offensive Utilization: In the event of a rogue captain attempting to slip an impounded vessel out of harbor during an embargo, the avatar boards the ship and uses Excise Gaze to sweep the deck and crew. The ability instantly outlines all carried pouches, hidden bandoliers, and illicit lockboxes in glowing amber light, stripping the smugglers of their concealed weaponry and alchemical flasks. By identifying the captain’s hidden master strongbox through the bulkhead, the inspector directs boarding troops directly to the illicit cargo hold, breaking the smugglers’ resolve to fight by seizing their high-value assets within seconds.
  • Frontier Mountain Tollpasses and Canyon Caravans
    • Defensive Utilization: Stationed along a narrow alpine pass where high-altitude winds and sheer drops make inspections hazardous, the avatar uses Ledger Clarity to audit incoming merchant manifests before allowing wagons through the iron checkpoint gate. Counterfeited seals, altered manifest numbers, and disguised cargo tallies glow with an unmistakable phosphorescent green, revealing fraudulent tax evasion without requiring physical cargo searches on icy ledges. After inspecting a suspect wagon, the avatar places the Seal of the Inspector across its cargo lock, ensuring that if bandits or treacherous drivers tamper with the latch during an overnight stay, a sharp mental chime alerts the avatar across the camp up to a mile away.
    • Offensive Utilization: When raiding an entrenched bandit redoubt hidden within an alpine cave network, the avatar taps the brass cap of the egg against barricaded timber blast doors. Using Reveal the Hidden Seam, the shell projects bright golden light through the solid timber, revealing the structural bracing points, hidden tripwires, and armed defenders crouching behind the barricade. Armed with this visual intelligence, party vanguards can direct siege hammers or ranged fire directly at the weak structural joints and defensive blind spots, neutralizing the outpost’s tactical advantage.
  • Metropolitan Guild Halls and Banking Scriptoriums
    • Defensive Utilization: Navigating the opulent audience chambers of merchant-guild syndicates, the avatar utilizes Appraisal Precision and Ledger Clarity during tense contract disputes or tax settlement hearings. When corrupt guild syndics present altered financial ledgers to claim false bankruptcies or dispute local municipal tariffs, the glowing green signatures immediately expose the forgeries to the room. The talisman protects the party and municipal authorities from entering into ruinous, fraudulent legal agreements or accepting counterfeit promissory notes.
    • Offensive Utilization: During an investigation into a corrupt magistrate suspected of running an underground embezzlement ring, the avatar conducts a legal search of the magistrate’s private manor. Using Excise Gaze, the investigator scans the study, causing concealed floor safes, hollow wall panels behind paintings, and hidden desk drawer catches to shine in radiant amber. By exposing the hidden physical ledgers and illicit bribe pouches in full view of the assembled city guard, the investigator legally dismantles the magistrate’s corrupt political influence on the spot.
  • Subterranean Smuggler Warrens and Sewer Vaults
    • Defensive Utilization: While tracking illicit distribution rings through pitch-black subterranean waterways or abandoned aqueducts, the bearer watches the talisman’s linework via the Mind’s Eye. The linework’s amber glow intensifies as the party nears concealed stone drop-hatches or spring-loaded tripwire mechanisms linked to contraband stashes. By detecting hollow brickwork before stepping onto compromised flagstones, the party avoids falling into spike traps or collapsing sewage tunnels set by paranoid outlaws.
    • Offensive Utilization: When cornering a fleeing contraband runner in a maze of subterranean cisterns, the inspector presses the base of the talisman against an iron sewer grate or water gate using Seal of the Inspector. The ethereal portcullis seal rapidly welds the barrier shut with glowing arcane force, cutting off the fugitive’s primary escape route into the undercity. Trapped against the locked gate, the smuggler is forced to drop their weapons and submit to formal arrest and customs seizure.

Perception of Activation:

  • The Five Senses: User’s Perspective
    • Sight: The fine wax lines of portcullises, padlocks, and balances blaze with a sharp, incisive amber luminescence, casting a geometric grid of light across the user’s hands while the surrounding environment slightly dims, highlighting hollow cavities, seam edges, and hidden compartments with crisp golden outlines.
    • Sound: A firm, resonant metallic latching echoes directly in the user’s ears, resembling the heavy dropping of an iron portcullis followed by the crisp, authoritative thump of a notary’s wax seal stamping down upon dry parchment.
    • Smell: The air fills with the sharp, clean scent of crushed sulfur sediment, warm sealing wax, and dry archival paper, instantly cutting through the musk of pack animals, moldy bilge, and damp wood.
    • Taste: A dry, metallic tang coats the tongue, akin to resting a cold copper token or iron ring against the lips.
    • Touch: The lacquer finish shifts from cool to a firm, steady vibration, sending a distinct, prickling cold needle-sensation across the user’s fingertips whenever aimed directly at a hollow partition, hidden seam, or concealed latch.
  • The Five Senses: Observer’s Perspective
    • Sight: Observers see the lacquered egg’s black, saffron, and brick-red facets flash with a contained, lantern-like golden-amber glare, briefly projecting faint geometric silhouettes of scales and barred grates across nearby containers and cargo.
    • Sound: Bystanders hear a muffled, mechanical click resembling the turning of a heavy iron key inside a well-oiled padlock, immediately drawing attention to the inspection area.
    • Smell: Those standing within arm’s reach catch a brief whiff of hot candle wax and scorched mineral dust that dissipates into the breeze after a few seconds.
    • Taste: Observers experience no direct taste sensation, though those with dry mouths register a faint, chalky dryness in the air.
    • Touch: A crisp, static snap ripples through the immediate air, causing arm hairs to stand on end as if a storm cloud were passing closely overhead.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions
    • Mind’s Eye: The conceptual stat overlays of nearby cargo, wagons, and carried luggage sharpen dramatically, rendering interior volumes in wireframe geometry that reveals volume discrepancies and unrecorded cavities.
    • True Sight: An observer utilizing true sight watches gossamer lattices of abjuration and divination magic weave outward from the brass caps, manifesting as a floating cage of amber energy bars that systematically sweeps over every container in the area.
    • Soul Sight: Beings perceiving spiritual auras notice an upright, unyielding column of pale golden light anchoring to the user, projecting an aura of strict order, unbending law, and vigilance that repels deceitful intentions.
    • Tremorsense: Subterranean creatures touching the stone or timber floor detect a sharp, focused acoustic tap through the ground, marking the exact structural boundary of any hollow cellar, hidden tunnel, or sunken floor vault nearby.
  • Positives
    • Instantly strips away the element of surprise by identifying hidden blades, concealed contraband, false wagon bottoms, and secret smuggler caches without requiring destructive physical dismantling.
    • Exposes forged documents, tampered municipal seals, and altered financial manifests on sight, expediting legitimate checkpoint throughput and preventing revenue loss.
    • Creates an incorruptible, mental-linked security ward (Seal of the Inspector) that alerts the user to perimeter breaches up to a mile away.
    • Commands immediate psychological authority, discouraging opportunistic smugglers and dishonest merchants from attempting bribery or evasion.
  • Negatives
    • The unmistakable flash of golden light and audible iron latching sound immediately alert nearby smugglers and thieves that an active arcane inspection is underway.
    • Reveals structural secrets indiscriminately, which may provoke legal hostility or distress from honest merchants carrying proprietary trade devices, heirlooms, or private personal lockboxes.
    • Fails to distinguish between dangerous contraband and harmless hidden items (such as a merchant’s private emergency coin stash or personal journal), requiring manual follow-up investigation.
    • Prolonged visual exposure to the sharp amber grid lines causes minor ocular fatigue and a lingering prickling sensation in the user’s fingers after repeated daily uses.

  • 1 Jeweler’s Pin Vise and Chalcocite Burnisher (for seating and crimping brass fittings).
  • 1 Lint-Free Flannel Buffing Cloth.

Skill Requirements

  • Crafting (Wax-Resist Art / Calligraphy): Minimum Level 2 (for scribing unbroken geometric grids, balanced scales, and fine-line portcullis bars).
  • Crafting (Alchemy): Minimum Level 1 (for properly compounding sulfurous mineral dyes with resonant crystal dust).
  • Municipal Law & Excise Protocol: Minimum Level 1 (for tracing authoritative inspection sigils recognized by customs wardens).

Crafting Steps

  • Shell Evacuation and Membrane Curing
    • Pierce the upper and lower apexes of the estuary gull egg using the bone aspiration needle, forming two balanced, clean pinholes.
    • Carefully inject air through the upper aperture, driving the internal contents out through the base into an alchemical vessel.
    • Flush the hollow interior repeatedly with warm brine to strip organic residue, then rest the shell in a dry, ventilated setting for 24 hours until the inner membrane turns crisp and parchment-dry.
  • Pigment Compounding and Crystal Infusion
    • Divide the pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal powder into three equal measures.
    • In the first ceramic pot, blend the soot-charcoal powder with iron-gall mordant and the first crystal portion, heating gently to establish a permanent obsidian-black dye.
    • In the second pot, dissolve the yellow sulfur spring sediment into a weak vinegar solution with the second crystal portion, yielding a brilliant saffron-yellow bath.
    • In the third pot, macerate the crushed crimson marsh lichen in water with the final crystal portion, simmering slowly to create an indelible brick-red stain.
  • Batik Masking and Geometric Scription
    • Draw melted beeswax into the heated kistka stylus and scribe the fine reserve lines across the bare white shell, drafting the balanced armatures of scales, padlocks, and eye perimeters.
    • Submerge the masked egg into the saffron-yellow bath for twenty minutes, remove, dry, and apply a fresh wax layer over all regions intended to retain the yellow counterweights and balance pans.
    • Lower the egg into the brick-red dye bath for twenty minutes, pat dry, and apply wax over the portcullis uprights, outer gate frames, and locking latches.
    • Plunge the shell into the soot-charcoal bath for thirty minutes to set the deep black background field behind the illuminated icons.
  • Thermal Cleansing and Protective Vitrification
    • Suspend the shell two inches above the alcohol burner flame, rotating it continuously so the wax softens without blistering the mineral lime.
    • Wipe the melted wax away in continuous, gentle passes using the flannel buffing cloth, exposing the clean white linework contrasting against the red, yellow, and black sectors.
    • Coat the entire decorated surface with an even layer of vitrified alchemical lacquer, curing it in a dust-free enclosure for twelve hours to produce a glass-hard, watertight finish.
  • Hardware Mounting and Registry Consecration
    • Seat the lower brass sealing base over the drainage pinhole, fixing it with quick-setting alchemical resin.
    • Align the upper brass cap and suspension ring over the top pinhole, crimping the fitted lip snugly along the shell’s curvature with the burnisher.
    • Hold the finished talisman in both hands, engage the Mind’s Eye, and focus upon an official customs manifest while tapping the lower brass seal against a dry parchment, formalizing the item’s harmonic alignment to boundary enforcement and inspection.

Salt-Gate Warden and False Bottom of Nine Ox-Carts

Unto the epoch when the grand water had not yet received the stone bridges of the coastal emperors, there stood upon the salt margin of the gulf a gate of three heavy timbers. In that station dwelt an assessor of timber and wool whose name upon the river-slates was inscribed as Karkas of the Bent Quill. He had eyes that had turned pale like pickled onions from peering into the belly of sacks and reading the greasy marks of boatmen by the light of tallow dips. In that season of many damp fogs, the sea-raiders and the river-dealers were accustomed to bring up the brackish channels many long boats made of hollowed willows, carrying tubs of dried eels that were good upon the top, but underneath were packed with forbidden silver bars, untaxed lead, and the bitter seed that makes men sleep until their cows are stolen.

Karkas had only a short rod of hazel-wood with which to knock upon the sides of casks, and when he struck the ironwood tun of a great captain, the captain would spit upon his sandals and swear by the seven-tailed fish that the cask held only the brine of common sprats. If Karkas reached his hand too deep into the dark grease, the boatmen would draw knives of gray bronze from their boots, asking him if his blood was of the same color as the harbor mud, so that the royal treasury received only three shells from twenty barges, while the lords of the shore cried out that the king had no copper left to pay the ditch-diggers.

Then Karkas, being weary of the curses of the boatmen and having two teeth broken by the cudgel of a tallow-smuggler, walked three miles out onto the sandy spits where the salt-water fowls build their mounds out of dried weed. He watched the white bird of the estuary that dives from the high wind to pluck the sprat from the green foam, for that bird can see the shadow of the small minnow even when the surface of the sea is thick with river-drift and scum. He found in the mud an oval shell of great thickness, which had dropped from the belly of a crested diver-goose that had died of great age upon the shore.

He carried the white lime in his sleeve to the cold cellar beneath the gate-tower, where the tide came twice in a day to lick the foundation rocks. He took the thin bone of a pelican’s wing and made two breathing mouths in the ends of the lime, blowing the wet slime of the bird into a flat earthen cup, which he gave to an old cat that lived upon the warehouse mice. He then washed the hollow cave with the sour water of vinegar, so that the lime within became like dry chalk, ready to hold the breath of an enchantment.

There lived in the fish-market an alchemical woman whose mother had come down from the high red hills where the yellow sulfur smokes from the cracks of the rock. Karkas gave her six bunches of dried leeks and four silver bits, and she brought to him in three pots the juices of the hidden things. In the first pot was the soot scraped from the chimney of the king’s weigh-house, where the false weights had been burned by the executioner. In the second pot was the yellow flour of the sulfur spring that stinks like the egg of an adder. In the third pot was the red moss that grows upon the stones of the drowned gallows where the river-pirates hang until the tide washes their ribs clean.

The woman took a reed of brass and the fat of winter bees that had fed only upon the bitter blossoms of the hemlock. She sat upon an overturned tub of herring, and while Karkas held the lamp, she drew upon the round white bird-stone the likeness of the iron grates that slide down across the city ditch when the war-horns blow. She drew also the two pans of the balance, which hang upon a hair to show whether a man’s grain is full of sand, and around the middle she traced four open eyes with many lashes, each looking into the four quarters of the sky where the boats come from.

They dropped the egg into the sulfur-water until the lime had drunk the yellow sunlight of the stones. Then the woman covered the pans of the balance with the hot grease, so that the yellow could not flee away when the red vat bit the shell. They cast the lime into the stew of the gallows-moss, boiling it over the coals of old ship-timbers until the shell was as red as the liver of a fresh-slain bullock. Again she laid the melted bee-fat over the bars of the portcullis, and at last plunged the whole into the black soot-water that had been stirred with the fat of dead water-rats.

When the shell was taken from the black pot, it was like a round lump of sea-coal. Karkas held it in his tremble-hand over the flame of a pitch-torch, and the grease wept away into the sand with a hiss like an angry serpent. Behold, there stood upon the curve of the bone the black night of the sea, the yellow gold of the scales, and the red blood of the iron bars, all bound together with white lines so straight that no mason could have set them truer with an ivory cord.

He took the dust of a small stone of magic, which had been found in the craw of a river-serpent and ground between two millstones until it was like grey meal, and he funneled it through the mouth of the egg. He capped the upper head and the lower foot with two collars of brass that had been beaten from the broken buckle of an imperial bailiff’s girdle. When the brass was set with tree-gum, the egg became heavy, like a stone of the brook, and when Karkas held it near his ear, he heard within the lime the sound of seventy iron keys turning inside of greasy locks.

On the third day of the hot summer, when the marsh-flies were like clouds of dust over the reeds, there arrived at the barrier gate a merchant of the interior whose name was Borlak-with-the-Broad-Thighs. He led nine great carts drawn by red oxen, each cart piled to the height of an apple tree with bales of dry sheep-skins, which smelled so foully of old grease that the sentries upon the palisade held their sleeves over their mouths. Borlak carried a skin of sweet wine under his arm, and he laughed with great boldness, presenting to Karkas a sheepskin scroll that bore the purple stamp of the governor of the sheep-plains, which declared that the nine carts carried only five thousand fleeces for the weavers of the capital, upon which only twelve small copper pence were owed for the use of the stone road.

Karkas looked upon the scroll, and having the painted egg hanging from his gut-belt by its ring of brass, he laid his hand upon the lime. In that very breath, the letters upon the sheepskin began to crawl like maggot-worms, and beneath the purple seal of the governor there shone out a pale, green sickness of false ink, showing that the true stamp had been washed away with the juice of sour apples, and that the number of the fleeces had been written by a scribe who had seven fingers upon his right hand, which was the known mark of the counterfeiters of the black marshes.

Borlak reached out his fat fingers and pressed three gold rings into the palm of the assessor, whispering that a wise man does not see the dirt upon an ox’s tail when the sun is hot. But the egg upon Karkas’s hip gave a sharp bite through his wool tunic, like the tooth of a dog-fish, and Karkas became filled with the cold pride of the salt-scales. He struck the brass foot of the egg against the timber axle of the foremost cart.

The old tablet recounts that the painted lime did not break, but it gave forth a sound like the shutting of an iron portcullis in the gate of a king. A bright yellow flare of light, like the flame of a sulfur-pot, shot forth from the brass ring and passed through the oak timbers and the dried fleece-skins as if they were made of thin water. Behold, the entire under-carriage of the nine carts became clear to the eyes of the watchmen upon the wall.

Beneath the five layers of stinking wool, there lay in each cart a great false belly made of hollow pine boards, bound with bands of boiled hide. Inside the hollow of the first cart were five hundred ingots of unrefined tin, stolen from the mines of the western mountains; in the second cart were seventy jars of aromatic oil from the spice-islands, upon which the queen’s tariff was forty silver coins for every measure; and in the third cart were twelve foreign archers crouching with their knees to their chins, each holding an ash-bow and twenty poisoned reeds, meant to open the water-gate from within at the dark of the moon for the fleet of the pirate-kings.

When Borlak saw that the wood was made like glass by the magic of the bird’s bone, he drew a great sword of iron and shouted to his ox-drivers to cut the throats of the gate-wardens. But Karkas, being filled with the authority of the brass balance, ran forward and smote the lock of the great harbor-barrier with the bottom of the egg. A phantom grate of red and gold fire fell down across the passage, sealing the roadway with an unearthly strength that no iron wedge could bite through.

The twelve foreign archers scrambled out from among the wool-bales, coughing from the yellow dust that smoked from the timber seams, but the spearmen of the harbor-watch fell upon them from the wooden walkways with heavy poles of ash. Borlak the merchant was taken by the hair of his beard and cast into the salt cellar, and the nine carts were dragged into the courtyard of the citadel, where the king’s bailiff spent four days drawing forth the untaxed gold, the gray tin, and the foreign silks that had been sewn inside the dry skins of sheep.

The king’s treasurer was so astonished at the great heap of wealth brought into the counting-house that he gave unto Karkas a belt of split cow-hide set with sixteen silver buttons, and decreed that no boat, mule, or wagon should pass the three rivers without kissing the brass foot of the painted egg. For twenty-two winters, Karkas sat upon his stool of willow, and though ten thousand thieves came with false boots, hollow oars, double-bottomed grain-measures, and rolls of lead hidden in the guts of dried pike, the shell upon his belt never failed to bite his thigh whenever an untaxed farthing crossed the ditch.

When Karkas died in the year of the great frost, when the tide froze so hard that wolves walked across the bay to eat the harbor-dogs, the younger inspectors took the egg and wished to divide it among their four houses, so that each man might have an eye to watch his own gate. But when the chisel touched the shell along the central line of the portcullis, the egg let loose a cry like an iron gate being torn from its stone sockets by an engine of war.

The egg did not split into equal parts, but crumbled into a fine, yellow-black sand that smelled of old salt and scorched lead. The wind of the sea caught the dust and blew it over the harbor wharfs, into the cracks of the stone piers, and into the hair of the young watchmen, so that even to this day, the men who watch the ships upon that coast can tell by the smell of the air whether a barrel contains the honest herrings of the deep sea or the smuggled spices of the south.

Moral of the Story: He who builds a hollow floor beneath his wagon will find that the eye of justice can see through two inches of oak, and the gold that is hidden from the king’s scale will buy only an iron chain in the salt-house.
