Lore
- In the wake of the soul falls over nine thousand years ago, newly arrived displaced communities materialized across the island continents carrying fractured memories of distant timelines, dialects, and traditions.
- An artisan weaver and scribe residing in a multilingual border territory between the island countries of Natufian and Tayacian sought a talisman that could bridge the deep cultural distrust between native sentient beasts and fragmented reincarnated souls.
- Employing traditional wax-resist techniques upon the thick, hollowed shell of an untamed river-fowl egg, the crafter layered organic pigments derived from crushed marsh elderberries, indigo sap, and river marigold pollen.
- Each concentric band of melted beeswax was traced to replicate the sacred handshake geometries, greeting banners, and hospitality motifs of twelve disparate immigrant cultures.
- Sealed with a fragment of a Tier 1 magic crystal ground into fine catalyst dust, the egg became a conduit for social communion, assisting travelers, ambassadors, and wandering caravans in deciphering local etiquette and showing honor to foreign ancestral customs without causing cultural insult.
Description
- The item is a smooth, hollowed bird egg approximately the size of an apple, encased in a hard, glass-like lacquer that shields the underlying colored wax-resist patterns.
- Its surface is divided into eight vertical quadrants of cobalt blue, deep ochre, and vermilion, each displaying intricate, fine-line white and yellow wax motifs of open palms, woven friendship wreaths, clasped talons, and intertwined tree roots.
- A band of spun silver wire frames the perimeter of the shell, converging at the top into a small, sturdy suspension clasp that allows it to dangle securely from a belt, strap, or formal chest harness.
- When handled, the surface feels comfortably smooth and vibrates with a faint, melodic resonance resembling the hushed murmur of distant marketplaces and welcoming festival drums.
- Under the glance of the Mind’s Eye, the etched script along the central meridian shimmers softly, dynamically aligning its patterns with the general disposition of the cultural group standing nearest to the bearer.

Commerce and Acquisition of Pysanky 108 of the Tapestry of Tongues
- Diplomatic Curio Ateliers and Consular Quarter Antiquarians
- Situated primarily along the grand administrative boulevards of central island capital cities or directly adjacent to foreign diplomatic enclaves, these specialized establishments cater to visiting state representatives, court legates, and royal heralds.
- In these quiet, carpeted showrooms, the item is displayed atop velvet-lined mahogany pedestals under protective glass cloches, with transactions involving formal reviews of diplomatic registries and verification of the egg’s preserved wax line work using the Mind’s Eye.
- Due to the refined clientele and municipal location, the retail purchasing cost sits between 22 and 28 silver coins, with recognized guild ambassadors or accredited state messengers obtaining a 10% discount per character tier level, bringing the price to roughly 18 to 20 silver coins.
- When selling an intact talisman here, the antiquarian offers between 12 and 15 silver coins, which is logged directly into the seller’s World Bank ledger, accompanied by standard formal inquiries regarding the regional lineage and original owner of the artifact.
- Family-Run Translation Parlors and Scribe Academies
- Positioned within bustling university districts, library plazas, or municipal hall squares of large state cities, these narrow, multi-story craft shops are maintained by family lines of certified court interpreters, copyists, and linguistic tutors.
- Transactions are conducted over wooden desks littered with parchment folios, inkwells, and lexicons, with patrons purchasing the egg as an heirloom educational tool for apprentices preparing for trade caravans across distant sovereign states.
- The standard retail cost in a family scriptorium ranges from 14 to 18 silver coins, with members of the local scribes’ or artisans’ guild qualifying for the standard 10% tier-adjusted discount, reducing the expenditure to around 12 to 14 silver coins.
- A seller bringing the talisman to a scribe receives an immediate appraisal of the shell’s dialect-retention magic, receiving a payout of roughly 9 to 11 silver coins transferred into their bank account, with the transaction carefully recorded in the shop’s municipal trade ledger.
- Frontier Waystations and Cross-Border Caravan Bazars
- Located at the convergence of inter-state roadways, mountain pass customs gates, or major river ferry terminals where travelers from varying island cultures intermingle before crossing checkpoints, these open-air trading stalls operate out of reinforced canvas pavilions.
- The talisman is suspended from wooden poles alongside caravan bells, travel packs, and state transit permits, traded directly to long-distance teamsters, pilgrim leaders, and wandering expedition parties seeking to avoid language disputes at regional borders.
- Given the heightened need for smooth communication at remote border crossings and the physical dangers of wilderness transit routes, merchants demand a marked-up price of 25 to 35 silver coins (or 2 to 3 gold coins and 5 silver).
- Outpost traders purchasing the egg from incoming wayfarers offer between 8 and 10 silver coins deposited into the character’s World Bank balance, heavily factoring in the distance from major metropolitan trade centers to bargain aggressively.
- Undercity Black-Market Relic Dens and Smuggler Basements
- Hidden beneath the foundation arches of coastal wharf districts, unpoliced factory basements, or shadowy warehouse alleys, these secretive brokerages trade in untracked goods, stolen regalia, and items recovered from fallen avatars without state or guild oversight.
- Deals are concluded behind iron-reinforced barred doors where buyers seek the egg to impersonate foreign delegations, eavesdrop on private diplomatic councils, or extract the powdered Tier 1 magic crystal dust from its core for forbidden alchemical brews.
- Black-market acquisitions strictly demand payment in loose physical gold coinage rather than World Bank balance transfers, carrying a steep asking price of 30 to 45 silver coins (exchanged as 3 to 4 electrum or 3 to 4 gold coins and 5 silver) with no discounts granted for guild rank or status.
- When fencing the talisman to an illicit broker, the seller is paid entirely in untracked physical gold or electrum pieces without records, receiving an immediate payout of 10 to 12 silver coins, or up to 20 silver coins (2 gold coins) if the dealer has an active request from an infiltration agent or smuggler cell.
Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Offensive and Defensive Deployments of Pysanky 108
- Fortified State Borders and Sovereign Toll Checkpoints
- Defensive Utilization: When approaching heavily armed state militia checkpoints where foreign goods face a steep five percent border levy or confiscation, the bearer openly displays the talisman over their traveling attire. As local sentries draw weapons, the avatar uses the Gesture of Kinship while executing the precise, archaic greeting bow customary to that specific province. The sentries recognize the ancient, respectful customs, easing their defensive stances and reducing the likelihood of physical searches, wrongful arrest, or unwarranted tariffs on personal gear.
- Offensive Utilization: In the event a corrupt toll-officer attempts extortion or unlawful detention of the caravan, the bearer activates Dialect of the Ancestors, adopting the archaic, commanding legal vernacular of the realm’s founding judges. By speaking with the authoritative inflection of royal charter magistrates, the avatar delivers sharp verbal reprimands that publicly question the commander’s lineage, honor, and adherence to ancient hospitality statutes. This sows vocal discord and hesitation among the junior watch guards, creating an immediate diplomatic distraction that allows allies to maneuver into flank positions or slip through unguarded supply barriers.
- Underground Habitats and Subterranean Goblin Settlements
- Defensive Utilization: Descending into deep subterranean caverns inhabited by sentient beast gestalts or territorial underground clans, the bearer uses Cultural Insight via the Mind’s Eye to interpret phosphorescent cave markings and structural bone totems before entering living zones. By identifying tribal boundary lines and ancestral nesting taboos, the party avoids stepping on sacred hatching stones, thereby preventing hostile ambush traps and calming subterranean hunters who normally perceive surface avatars as invasive plunderers.
- Offensive Utilization: During combat within tight fungal passages or subterranean warrens, the bearer channels an action into Echoes of the Homeland, projecting radiant three-dimensional illusions of ancestral battle chants, spectral marching legions, and the sacred drum rhythms of an ancient subterranean conqueror. In the echoing expanse of dark stone corridors, the abrupt auditory roar and glaring cultural imagery overwhelm the sensory perception of light-sensitive foes, inducing momentary disorientation, masking party spellcasting chants, and breaking the coordinated morale of defensive spear formations.
- High-Altitude Floating Cloud Cities and Aerial Catwalks
- Defensive Utilization: While negotiating narrow sky-bridges and suspended platforms between twenty-story mage towers, the bearer encounters reclusive avian sentinels and sky-guardians who distrust earthbound races. Openly presenting the talisman’s clasped-talon and wind-motif wax designs triggers the Aura of Hospitality, signaling reverence for aerial flight lineages. Avian sentinels lower their polearms, allowing the party safe traversal across windy rope bridges without triggering sudden gust-wards or being shoved into the sheer three-thousand-foot drop below.
- Offensive Utilization: When boarding a hostile pirate airship or defending a zeppelin landing deck, the bearer activates Dialect of the Ancestors to mimic the exact naval command slang, flight signals, and docking jargon of the opposing corsair crew. By projecting deceptive navigational orders into the howling gale, the avatar creates mass confusion among enemy riggers and deckhands, causing them to slacken sails or misalign steering rudders, turning the wind’s momentum against their own vessel and opening clean avenues for party martial assaults.
- Metropolitan Guild Quarters and High-Court Assemblies
- Defensive Utilization: Within central capital city halls where guild masters, hereditary royals, and foreign consuls engage in cutthroat political intrigue, the bearer relies on the talisman’s passive Lingua Resonance to unobtrusively comprehend muttered local idioms, trade slang, and dialectal whispers across crowded council floors. By deciphering the hidden social slights and subtle familial insults of rival factions, the avatar navigates delicate treaty deliberations without stepping into legal entanglements, social traps, or retaliatory duels.
- Offensive Utilization: During tense public council debates or formal audience chambers, the avatar taps the shell and unleashes Echoes of the Homeland, flooding the assembly with the sacred ancestral anthems, folk banners, and solemn rites of a marginalized or suppressed border culture. This dramatic cultural projection acts as a calculated rhetorical weapon, unmasking hypocritical claims made by imperial ministers, rallying sympathetic council members to the party’s cause, and forcing arrogant court viziers onto the defensive in front of the assembled royal court.

Perception of Activation:
- The Five Senses: User’s Perspective
- Sight: The fine wax-resist outlines of clasped hands, olive wreaths, and intertwined roots ignite with a luminous golden-white radiance, while ribbons of multicolored light corresponding to the quadrant hues spiral outward from the shell’s silver meridian and float lazily around the user’s fingers.
- Sound: A harmonious, layered chord echoes in the ears, blending the distant hum of a bustling multi-species bazaar, the resonant cadence of ancient folk drums, and a low, reassuring murmur of greeting phrases spoken in a dozen distinct cadences at once.
- Smell: The air immediately surrounding the user shifts to the rich, inviting aroma of communal feast tables, combining the scents of crushed wild marigolds, ceremonial burning frankincense, roasted festival flatbreads, and dried travel teas.
- Taste: A gentle sweetness tinged with mineral salt coats the palate, reminiscent of the ceremonial bread-and-salt hospitality offerings traditionally presented to honored foreign travelers entering a peaceful city.
- Touch: The lacquer glaze warms gently against the skin, accompanied by a rhythmic, steady micro-pulse that feels like a calm, welcoming handshake or an open hand placed lightly over the user’s chest.
- The Five Senses: Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Observers witness the egg’s dyed geometric quadrants brighten with a warm, steady lantern-like illumination, projecting faint, floating calligraphic runes and cultural symbols that hover momentarily in the air before softly fading.
- Sound: Bystanders perceive a soothing acoustic resonance like the gentle chiming of caravan bells and the quiet murmuring of an assembly hall, which naturally suppresses harsh background clatter and echoes.
- Smell: Those near the bearer notice a sudden draft of sweet field blossom pollen and fresh hearth smoke, masking the foul odors of street muck, industrial engine grease, or stale travel gear.
- Taste: Observers experience a subtle, clean sensation on the tongue, as if taking a sip of fresh, clear spring water drawn from a shared communal well.
- Touch: A wave of mild, reassuring atmospheric warmth washes over those standing nearby, easing stiffened muscles and dispelling the damp chill of cold roadways or shadowed halls.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Mind’s Eye: The conceptual stat overlays of nearby sentient creatures highlight with bright green indicators, immediately decoding their social intentions, current cultural allegiances, and emotional comfort levels directly into the user’s mental vision.
- True Sight: An observer utilizing true sight sees delicate threads of divination and enchantment magic weaving together, manifesting as violet-gold gossamer ribbons connecting the egg’s silver setting to the speech centers of all surrounding sentient minds.
- Soul Sight: Observers with soul-perceiving faculties witness a brilliant white-and-indigo halo blossoming outward from the talisman, projecting an unmistakable spiritual aura of goodwill, non-aggression, and deep reverence for ancestral life.
- Tremorsense: Subterranean or burrowing beings in contact with the same floor register a soft, harmonic vibration rippling through the rock, rhythmic and non-threatening, matching the cadence of a formal ceremonial marching procession.
- Positives
- Instantly defuses immediate racial, factional, or cultural distrust, shifting tense standoffs into open, productive diplomatic negotiations.
- Completely removes language barriers and cultural faux pas by granting instantaneous comprehension of archaic idioms, local dialects, and body-language taboos.
- Emits an inviting, respectable aura that makes local authorities, guards, and tribal elders far more willing to grant safe passage and hospitality.
- Soothes the distress and disorientation of displaced refugees and reincarnated souls struggling with fragmented memories of lost homelands.
- Negatives
- The luminous glow and floating arcane runes make it impossible to activate the talisman secretly or conceal one’s presence in darkness.
- The distinct acoustic and olfactory emissions can draw unwanted attention from territorial wild beasts or bandits lying in wait along wilderness routes.
- May arouse suspicion among paranoid rulers, spies, or conspirators who fear the bearer is using supernatural mind control or foreign covert influence to subvert their court.
- The heightened empathy and influx of linguistic concepts can cause mild mental strain and a dull temple headache if maintained across extended multi-hour deliberations.
Crafting Recipe: Pysanky of the Tapestry of Tongues
Materials Needed
- 1 Unfertilized River-Fowl Egg (thick-shelled, collected from a peaceful river delta nesting ground).
- 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized, finely pulverized into a luminous catalytic powder).
- 3 Ounces of Pure Natural Beeswax (harvested from wild forest honeycombs and cleared of debris).
- 2 Ounces of Indigo Tree Sap (harvested cleanly via a fluid collector to serve as a deep blue pigment base).
- 1 Ounce of Crushed Marsh Elderberry Extract (deep vermilion organic pigment).
- 1 Ounce of Wild River Marigold Pollen (rich golden-ochre pigment).
- 1 Ounce of Fermented Marsh Oak Gall Mordant (to permanently anchor natural dyes to the mineral shell).
- 8 Inches of Annealed Spun Silver Wire (for the structural meridian harness and hanging loop).
- 1 Fl. Oz. of Purified Resin-Tree Sealing Varnish (hard-drying transparent lacquer).
Tools Required
- 1 Fine-Tipped Kistka Stylus (traditional metal-funnel wax pen with a hardwood grip).
- 1 Fluid Collector (precision syringe used for gathering fresh botanical resins and elderberry extracts).
- 1 Miniature Brass Candle Warmer (to maintain continuous liquefaction of the beeswax).
- 1 Bone Aspiration Needle (fine hollow needle used to evacuate egg contents without fracturing the outer shell).
- 1 Set of Fine Needle-Nose Jewelers’ Pliers and Wire Cutters (for braiding and fitting the silver wire setting).
- 3 Glazed Ceramic Dye Vats (sized to permit full submersion of the shell).
- 1 Fine Wool Polishing Cloth (for progressive wax melting and buffing).
Skill Requirements
- Crafting (Calligraphy & Painting): Minimum Level 2 (for executing symmetrical multi-cultural line work with the kistka).
- Crafting (Alchemy): Minimum Level 1 (for properly binding organic pigments with the magic crystal dust).
- Arcane Conduit Training: Minimum Level 1 (for harmonizing the finished talisman with the Mind’s Eye).
Crafting Steps
- Shell Evacuation and Membrane Conditioning
- Pierce the top and bottom poles of the clean river-fowl egg using the bone aspiration needle to create two precise, clean pinholes.
- Slowly inject air into the upper hole to evacuate the albumen and yolk through the base into an alchemical catch basin.
- Rinse the empty interior with a weak saltwater solution, then set the shell in a dry, shaded draft for twelve hours until the inner membrane is completely dehydrated.
- Pigment Blending and Arcane Charging
- Dissolve one-third of the pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal into the fermented oak gall mordant, dividing the mixture equally into three ceramic dye vats.
- Stir the indigo tree sap into the first vat to produce deep cobalt blue, the crushed marsh elderberries into the second vat for rich vermilion, and the river marigold pollen into the third vat for radiant ochre.
- Gently warm each vat over low coals to activate the crystalline binding agent within the botanical colors.
- Batik Masking and Layered Inscription
- Fill the kistka stylus with melted natural beeswax from the brass warmer, carefully outlining eight balanced vertical quadrants on the white shell.
- Inscribe the white reserve lines depicting open palms and entwined root patterns across the ivory surface to shield them from the dye.
- Submerge the egg into the golden-ochre vat for fifteen minutes, pat dry, and apply a second layer of hot wax over the regions intended to retain the yellow heraldic banners and wheat sheaves.
- Submerge the shell into the vermilion dye bath for fifteen minutes, let dry, and lay down the third wax layer over the friendship wreaths and peace motifs.
- Dip the exposed areas into the cobalt blue vat to establish the deep contrast background fields representing the shared sky.
- Thermal De-Waxing and Lacquer Curing
- Position the shell two inches from a clean campfire ember or brass heat lamp, turning it slowly to soften the wax layers without scorching the pigments.
- Buff the melting wax away using the fine wool cloth, revealing the crisp, multi-colored geometric patterns beneath the mask.
- Coat the entire outer surface in a thin layer of purified resin-tree sealing varnish to create a glass-smooth, moisture-resistant protective skin.
- Setting and Resonant Consecration
- Funnel the remaining two-thirds of the powdered Tier 1 magic crystal through the bottom pinhole into the hollow interior of the shell to serve as the internal magical core.
- Seal both pinholes permanently with two drops of thickened tree resin.
- Using the needle-nose pliers, form the spun silver wire into a four-ribbed cage that clasps the quadrants along the meridian lines, twisting the excess wire at the apex into a secure hanging loop.
- Hold the finished egg between both hands, open your Mind’s Eye, and recite a formal greeting in three separate native languages to awaken the talisman’s internal linguistic resonance.
Lime-Skin of Many Throats and Seven Stumbling Kings
In the time when the heavens had not yet counted nine thousand turnings of the great wet sphere, many bodies fell out of the clouds like dropped sacks of barley. They had arrived with empty heads, knowing not the names of their mothers nor the names of the river-clams, for the sleep of the great void had scraped their thinking like a dull kitchen scraper. Unto the dry border where the country of the flint-makers meets the red mud of the mountain tribes, there lay twenty houses of grass. In that place dwelt an elder woman of two hands whose name upon the wet shale was called Vana of the Twisted Spindle.
Vana had lived through three cold seasons of the great sky-beast VaporSphere when the darkness eats the noon-meal. She saw that the people from the high hills spoke with tongues that sounded like the cracking of dry bones, while the folk of the low ditch spoke with words that sounded like the bubbling of sour milk in a goat’s bladder. Because the throat of the hill-man could not shape the water-words of the ditch-man, they did throw flint axes into the ribs of one another across the turnip ditch. They said unto the grass: These men are wolves who have stolen the skins of men, for their teeth make sounds of barking when they ask for the cup of grease.
Then the woman Vana went unto the edge of the great slow water where the earth flows always toward the sunset. She sought the nest of the blue-crested river-goose that eats the bitter snails of the mud. She found there an egg of thick lime, white like the tooth of an old dead boar, and hollowed it with the wing-bone of a crow until the yolk was cast into the marsh to feed the blind mud-fish. She said to her own knees: If two men cannot put their ears into the same basket, I shall make a basket out of bone-lime where twenty tongues may sleep together without biting.
She took the fluid collector which had been beaten out of copper reeds, and she pierced the belly of the weeping alder tree until the sap ran out like clear honey. She took also the blue juice of the mountain weed which the women use to paint their eyelids for the feast of the moon, and she squeezed the red elderberries that grow upon the mounds of the ancient dead until her fingers were like the claws of a butcher-kite.
With the hot fat of the stinging bees, she made marks upon the white round lime. The ancient tablet is here broken, but the scribe writes that she drew twelve open palms, each with five fingers, though some of the tribes in that age had six toes upon their feet and were greatly offended. She drew also the ropes of green vine that tie the sheep to the hurdle, and the wings of the bird that does not know the boundary of the king’s ditch.
She dropped the lime into the pot of golden yellow water which had been boiled with the yellow dust of marsh lilies. When it came forth, it was like the yellow eye of a cat in the thicket. Then she traced more grease of the bees over the yellow marks, so that the blue vat could not eat the sun that was caught upon the shell. She dipped it then into the indigo liquor that stank of fermented urine and river iron, and at last into the vat of dead berries until the shell was as dark and mottled as the belly of an adder.
Then she held the egg over the coals of dry cow-dung. The grease ran off in greasy tears upon her wool skirt, and behold, the eight divisions of the sky were revealed, each bearing the signs of friendship which were drawn so crookedly that neither the hill-people nor the ditch-people could say: This mark belongs only to my grandfather. She took a grain of the shining blue pebble which had been extracted from the skull of a marsh serpent, and she dropped it through the breathing hole of the lime, sealing the mouth thereof with three drops of hot tree-gum.
On the morning when the sun Helios was standing upon the shoulder of the red mountain, seven kings of the scrub-forest came riding upon two-horned goats, each with twenty club-men behind him. They had met by the heap of boundary stones to divide the salt well and the four fields of hairy barley. Each king brought an interpreter whose ears were stretched with rings of bone, but the interpreters hated one another because of ancient sheep-stealing, and they lied with their mouths to make their masters angry.
The first king, whose name was Har-of-the-Bog, spoke in the language of the marsh, saying that he wished to drink of the well and would give two fat ewes for the peace of the grass. But his interpreter had a belly full of bitter gall, and he translated into the ear of the second king, who was called Mor-of-the-Crag: The lord of the bog spits upon your mother’s cooking pot and says that your sons are the get of jackals.
Then the seven kings drew their broad knives of soft bronze and began to shout until the dust of the road rose up like a pillar of grey smoke. Their club-men began to beat upon their wicker shields, and the blood of three goat-boys was spilled upon the flint before the sun had climbed to the height of a pine tree.
Vana of the Spindle ran out from her wicker hut, bearing the painted shell hung from her neck upon a cord of braided hog-hair. She stood between the seven kings and held the egg high toward the blue face of the sky. She tapped the painted lime three times with the back of her bronze needle.
Behold, the scroll of the old scribe says that a great sound like the rustling of five thousand silk curtains fell upon the ditch. The shell began to glow with the light of morning water when the wind is low. A cloud of sweet dust that smelled of ceremonial flatbreads, dried sage, and the smoke of friendly campfires drifted into the noses of the seven kings and their spearmen.
The king Har-of-the-Bog opened his mouth to cry the war-cry of the bog-leech, but from his tongue came not the rough croaking of the swamp, but the high, musical chant of the mountain people, praising the stone towers and the white cheese of the crags. And the king Mor-of-the-Crag, who had raised his spear to split the breast of the bog-king, dropped his point, for he heard in his own head the crying of the marsh-babes and the song that the bog-mothers sing when the wild rice is harvested in the wet autumn.
For three hours of the sun’s travel, the seven kings sat in the dust with their knees touching, and each spoke with the tongue of his neighbor’s cradle. The king who had only eaten fish understood why the king of the dry hills was afraid of the dark clouds, and the king of the high rocks wept when he learned that the swamp-folk had no dry wood to warm their grandmothers in the season of the long frost. They threw their bronze knives into the turnip ditch, and they divided the salt well by the measurement of seven equal willow rods, and each gave unto the other the greeting of the five-fingered palm.
Yet the story does not sit down in peace, for the third king’s brother, whose liver was full of black soot and whose name was Kroll-of-the-Iron-Nail, was deaf in both his ears from a blow taken in his youth from an ox-yoke. Because he could not hear the sweet murmur of the painted lime, the magic found no road into his skull. He saw only his brother sitting in the dung of the roadway, embracing a marsh-man who had killed his uncle five summers before.
Kroll crept through the hazel bushes with a heavy throwing stone of grey granite. He said in his heart that his brother had been made a woman by the witchcraft of the old spindle-wife. He cast the stone with great fury, not at the king, but at the breast of the woman Vana, meaning to break her heart-pot.
The stone flew straight like a hunting falcon, but the old woman raised the painted egg to shield her throat. The rock struck the curve of the lime with a sound like the snapping of an iron pot on a frosty night. The shell of many dyes was broken into forty pieces and scattered upon the mud of the turnip ditch.
In the moment of its shattering, the great noise of fifty languages broke out from the hollow void like a swarm of hornets escaping from a struck nest. The words of praise, the words of the market, the songs of mourning, and the curses of eighty forgotten tribes rushed into the ears of the seven kings and their spearmen all at once. The multitude was seized with a great swimming of the brain, for each man heard twenty voices speaking within his own tongue, and none could tell if the man before him was his brother or his slayer.
The spearmen dropped their wicker hurdles and fled into the thorn brakes, covering their ears with their hands and screaming that the ghosts of the old moon were chattering in their teeth. The seven kings rose up and ran every man toward his own hill, but because their tongues had been twisted together by the broken crystal, they could no longer command their own goat-boys, and their kingdoms fell into little pieces like dry cakes of sand.
As for the woman Vana, she sat upon the boundary stone until the light was gone, gathering the small shards of the shell out of the wet earth. She found only nine fragments that still bore the traces of the wax hands and the blue indigo wash. She hid them in the hem of her shift and went away into the high forests where no kings build their roads, and it is said that those who met her in her old age found that she could speak to the bears, the mountain squirrels, and the strange folk who fell from the clouds in the years that followed, though she had not more than three teeth remaining in her jaw.
Moral of the Story: A bridge built of honeyed words is easily broken by one stone of deaf hatred, but he who keeps a single shard of his brother’s speech within his pocket will find a bed in every forest across the world.
