Psionic 742 of the Unburdened Mind

Lore

  • Forged during the early expansion of the industrialized island states, this apparatus was engineered by early mind-smiths who sought to reconcile the trauma of sudden reincarnation. When foreign souls are pulled across the multiverse by Gaialilith into mortal vessels, the violent clash of past-life memories and host instincts often triggers severe cognitive rejection, known among scholars as planar dissonance. To prevent psychological collapse, mental engineers applied precision psychic dampening principles into physical brass and resonant crystal lattice. Rather than fighting incoming hostile intent, painful memories, or overwhelming emotional turbulence, the device teaches the bearer’s consciousness the art of total yielding. By embracing cognitive harmony, the wearer accepts reality precisely as it manifests, channeling ambient psionic vibrations through brass conduits to ground mental distress harmlessly into the earth.

  • Weight: 2 pounds
  • Physical Description: A lightweight, open-frame coronet constructed from interlocking bands of polished spun brass, centered around a thumb-sized, pale amethyst crystal that rests against the forehead. Slender acoustic copper wires trace along the temples to cup behind the ears, vibrating with a subtle, low hum whenever active thoughts pass through the mind’s eye.

Skills Gained While Openly Worn

  • +1 Insight (Temporary skill point)
  • +1 Perception (Temporary skill point)

Passive Magics

  • Harmonic Equanimity: The wearer reflexively yields to emotional and mental shock instead of resisting with tension. While this headpiece is openly worn and attuned, the avatar gains advantage on all saving throws against being charmed, frightened, or inflicted with the fragmented condition.
  • Mind’s Eye Stabilization: The psychic circuits filter sensory clutter. The avatar cannot suffer sensory overwhelm from the active use of the Mind’s Eye, and attempts by outside forces to project false stats or misleading aura signatures directly into the bearer’s consciousness automatically fail.
  • Grounded Resignation: When subjected to sudden forced movement, psychological pushback, or telekinetic displacement, the device converts the incoming force into harmless static hums, granting the bearer immunity to being knocked prone by psionic or psychic sources.

Activable Magics

  • Cognitive Empathy: As an action, the wearer projects a wave of calm acceptance toward a visible sentient creature within 30 feet. The target must succeed on an opposed save against the wielder’s d20 roll, or have their hostile intent pacified for 1 minute, preventing them from targeting the user with direct offensive attacks until the user performs a hostile act against them.
  • Telepathic Consensus: As an action, the wielder touches the central amethyst to open a silent mental conduit with up to two willing sentient allies within 60 feet. For 10 minutes, the connected individuals can exchange silent thoughts, sensory impressions, and intentions without verbalization, bypassing ambient noise, darkness, and muting effects.
  • Dissolution of Spite: As a reaction when the avatar suffers damage from a melee or ranged attack, the wearer channels psionic resonance to accept the kinetic impact without struggle. The total incoming damage from the triggering strike is reduced by an amount equal to the roll of the avatar’s tier die (1d4), and the attacker’s weapon conduit suffers an instantaneous psychic reverberation that unattunes a random carried trinket or pouch until recalibrated.

Acquisition, Market Dynamics, and Valuation of the Psionic 742 of the Unburdened Mind

  • Methods of Acquisition
    • Discovery within ancestral ruins, sunken coastal vaults, or subterranean forgotten caches where early tinker-mages abandoned cognitive prototypes during the expansion eras.
    • Recovery as a reward for resolving diplomatic, emotional, or territorial disputes between rival guilds, royal envoys, or feuding city factions without resorting to bloodshed.
    • Retrieval from the physical drops of an unpossessed humanoid or sentient creature that fell in combat while wearing the apparatus, or retrieved beside the soul crystal of a vanquished possessed entity.
    • Crafting through an artisan recipe combining finely spun brass wiring, an attuned Tier 1 coin-sized crystal catalyst, and biological sap reagents harvested with a fluid collector from meditative grove trees.
    • Possession inheritance when a newly manifested soul successfully invades and claims an adult avatar that was already actively utilizing the coronet in their day-to-day profession.
  • Artisan Mind-Smiths and Clockwork Sanctuaries
    • Physical Environment: These establishments are narrow, family-operated workshops nestled in the dense mid-levels of major capital settlements or bustling port towns. Shelves are crowded with ticking mechanical dials, fine calibration calipers, glass specimen jars filled with unrefined cognitive distillates, and velvet-lined display trays showcasing headpieces under warm gas-lamp light.
    • Purchasing Process: Buying this headwear requires direct negotiation with the presiding master tinkerer or alchemical jeweler. If the customer holds active membership in the local Craftsman Guild or affiliated philosophical enclave, they receive an immediate 10% discount on the item’s baseline value multiplied by their Tier level. Transactions are settled cleanly through accounts registered in the World Bank via Mind’s Eye transfers, with the institution levying its standard 1% transaction surcharge.
    • Selling Process: An avatar offering to sell the coronet to an artisan merchant must submit to a meticulous inspection where the merchant verifies crystal integrity and resonance circuits. The shopkeeper will haggle downward around 10% of the item’s evaluated worth multiplied by the seller’s Tier level. The final agreed funds are directly deposited into the character’s World Bank ledger, and the merchant logs a detailed paper record documenting the seller’s appearance, species, and avatar markings.
    • Transaction Pricing: The baseline market recommendation for this Tier 1 common psionic apparatus sits at approximately 150 silver coins (equivalent to 15 gold coins). A standard non-affiliated buyer pays the full 150 silver, whereas an attuned Tier 1 guild member secures it for 135 silver. When selling the piece to a legitimate artisan, an unbonded Tier 1 adventurer typically walks away with 135 silver credited to their account.
  • Curio Dens and Secondhand Resale Stalls
    • Physical Environment: Found along the covered alleyways of market plazas and trade-road garrisons, these shops are chaotic, dust-laden spaces crammed with odd assortment crates, unstrung tools, salvaged armor pieces, and assorted low-tier curiosities hanging from overhead ceiling beams.
    • Purchasing Process: The shopkeeper operates on a strict “buyer beware” model, providing no guarantees regarding previous psychic impressions lingering in the crystal or minor physical wear on the brass band. Guild discounts apply only if the shopkeeper displays a formal guild insignia in their street-facing window.
    • Selling Process: Resale dealers assume substantial inventory risk and typically push the haggle margin hard, exploiting an adventurer’s urgent need for liquid coinage to lower payouts while logging minimal descriptive notes in their ledgers.
    • Transaction Pricing: Depending on the scarcity of mental foci in that specific island state, purchasing prices fluctuate between 120 silver and 180 silver. When buying from an adventurer, curio merchants commonly settle payments between 100 silver and 130 silver, deposited straight into the seller’s World Bank balance after verifying the transaction fee.
  • Shaded Underground Exchanges and Black-Market Smugglers
    • Physical Environment: Operating out of hidden waterfront cellars, dry drainage ducts beneath industrial refineries, or disguised rooms behind unlicensed taverns, these venues avoid official scrutiny, municipal guards, and tax collectors entirely.
    • Purchasing Process: Black-market brokers deal strictly in physical gold, electrum, or silver coins; credit transfers through the World Bank are utterly rejected. Prices are elevated because items sold here carry no serial markings, no tax assessment levies, and zero official records connecting the acquisition to a buyer.
    • Selling Process: Brokers pay outright cash in hand for the coronet, asking no questions regarding where the item was taken, who originally owned it, or whether an avatar perished to surrender it. If an elusive buyer has placed an urgent contract for a psychic focus that bypasses guard-checkpoint scrying, the fence may pay a massive premium above ordinary merchant offers.
    • Transaction Pricing: When purchasing from illicit syndicates, buyers face inflated tags ranging from 200 silver to 300 silver in loose coin. When selling the coronet to a broker who has an active client seeking subtle psionic gear, the payout can range from 150 silver up to 270 silver in raw physical coinage.

Roleplay Applications of the Psionic 742 Across Diverse Environments

  • High-Density Industrial Metropolises and Flying Skyscraper Districts
    • Defensive Roleplay: Amid the cacophony of pressurized steam valves, rattling cog-trains, and the mental chatter of thousands of packed citizens, the wearer consciously taps the copper acoustic leads curling behind their ears. Instead of recoiling from sensory overload or panic during a factory collapse, the avatar takes a slow breath, accepting the industrial chaos as merely another state of motion. When targeted by an aggressive municipal enforcer or debt collector wielding a shock-baton, the wearer does not flinch or raise their fists; they adopt an open, yielding posture. The coronet hums, absorbing the kinetic shock via Dissolution of Spite, while an unexpected psychic backlash flashes up the attacker’s arm, instantly deactivating their steam-powered stun rod.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Operating in cramped sky-bridges or narrow catwalks suspended miles above the moon’s surface, kinetic brawling risks sending both parties plummeting. Rather than attacking with blades, the avatar locks eyes with an escalating thug and activates Cognitive Empathy. The roleplay centers on quiet, absolute stillness: the wearer speaks in an even, measured tone, flooding the hostile mind with a sudden, overwhelming certainty that fighting here is pointless and that their grievance is small. The attacker drops their raised weapon, dumbfounded by a profound wave of calm surrender, allowing the wearer and their party to walk past uncontested.
  • Wilderness Jungles and Arcane Wild-Magic Scars
    • Defensive Roleplay: In forests choked with toxic, sentient vegetation and beasts warped by raw mana leaks, the environment itself attacks the mind. When navigating a wild-magic storm that forces erratic, random spell discharges, the wearer leans into the turbulent fluctuations rather than resisting. The coronet’s Harmonic Equanimity keeps the avatar grounded, preventing the fragmented hallucinations that plague others. When ambushed by a stalking predator, such as an evolved pack hunter leaping from the canopy, the wearer uses the grounded resignation feature to absorb the pounce, staying firmly planted on their feet instead of being pinned to the mossy earth.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Facing aggressive feral creatures driven wild by territorial instincts, the avatar uses Telepathic Consensus to coordinate a silent ambush with allies. Without snapping a twig or whispering a syllable, the avatar routes tactical awareness directly to the minds of their companions, pointing out the beast’s blind spots through shared visual impressions. The wearer then projects Cognitive Empathy toward the beast’s primitive consciousness, soothing its feral rage and making it perceive the party not as invasive prey or threatening predators, but as an unmovable, natural fixture of the grove to be quietly tolerated.
  • Subterranean Deep Oceans and Pressurized Aquatic Habitats
    • Defensive Roleplay: Hundreds of fathoms below the surface in underwater dome settlements, sound travels through water with skull-cracking intensity, and the psychological weight of the deep sea induces profound claustrophobia. An avatar equipped with the coronet roleplays an acceptance of the ocean’s suffocating pressure, meditating as the central amethyst casts a soft purple gleam through the murky waters. If an aquatic raider strikes with a pneumatic harpoon, the wearer channels their psionic resonance to yield to the water’s drag, softening the impact and rattling the attacker’s equipment harness, severing the attunement of their swim-fins or secondary spear.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In the lightless abyss, spoken commands are impossible and lantern signals draw apex leviathans. The wearer roleplays Telepathic Consensus as an invisible umbilical cord linking the party’s minds across the black brine, maintaining formation even when blinded by sediment plumes or ink clouds. By directing psionic focus through the water toward an enemy sentry, the wearer bypasses physical barricades entirely, projecting a sense of serene futility into the guard’s mind until the sentry abandons their post, convinced that guarding the trench is entirely unnecessary.
  • Formal Royal Courts and High-Stakes Diplomatic Chambers
    • Defensive Roleplay: Within the opulent palaces of island monarchs, court intrigue is fought with venomous words, concealed enchantments, and sudden accusations from rival ambassadors. Wearing the open-framed brass band visibly as an unpretentious adornment, the avatar withstands social intimidation and magical compulsions without breaking composure. When a court sorcerer subtly attempts to plant panic or sow doubt using charm spells, the coronet warms against the wearer’s forehead. The avatar simply smiles, unbothered, using their enhanced Insight to read the micro-expressions of the frustrated caster while the mental assault washes off like water from slate.
    • Offensive Roleplay: When debates turn volatile and bloodlines threaten war across the council table, the avatar takes the floor without drawing a weapon. Activating Cognitive Empathy during a heated exchange, the wearer channels the concept of total acceptance across the room, specifically targeting an aggressive general or uncompromising noble. The roleplay manifests not as mind control, but as an overwhelming intellectual clarity that forces the target to accept the reality of the situation, deflating their bellicose posturing and compelling them to agree to a peaceful treaty they had spent hours vehemently rejecting.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective
    • Somatosensory and Thermal Shifts: The instant an active psionic pulse is triggered, the spun brass bands contract with a firm, comforting pressure across the temples and brow. The thumb-sized amethyst loses its room-temperature coolness, warming rapidly until it feels like a heated stone pressed against the forehead, radiating gentle pulses of thermal energy down the bridge of the nose and into the jawline.
    • Auditory Modulation: Ambient room sounds drastically drop in volume, as if the ears were submerged an inch below still water. Through bone conduction, the delicate copper acoustic wires humming behind the ears transmit a continuous, low-frequency pitch akin to a sustained, distant chime, drowning out cognitive chatter and heartbeat thumps.
    • Optical and Cognitive Clarity: Physical eyesight sharpens at the center of focus while peripheral motion blurs softly. In the mental space of the Mind’s Eye, sensory static dissolves into stark, geometric lines. Floating data points, intent signatures, and the physical outlines of nearby entities render with calm, unshakeable lucidity, stripping away visual panic, emotional glare, and misleading aura tricks.
    • Extradimensional and Resonant Awareness: The avatar experiences a brief sensation of spatial weightlessness, as if the physical mass of the body were anchored directly to the planetary crust while the consciousness floats a fraction of an inch above it. The weave of ambient magic manifests not as light, but as a slow, rhythmic tide gently brushing against the mind, making foreign aggression feel tiny, distant, and easily absorbed.
  • Observer’s Perspective
    • Visual Manifestations: Observers watching the avatar see the pale amethyst ignite with a steady, internal violet radiance that casts soft geometric shadows across the wearer’s face. The fine brass filigree glows with a dull golden sheen, and a faint, shimmering heat-distortion ripple emanates outward in concentric rings from the forehead, creating a subtle mirage effect around the user’s upper skull.
    • Kinetic Posture Shift: The avatar’s breathing rhythm noticeably drops to a slow, measured cadence. Tensed muscles in the shoulders, neck, and hands abruptly slacken into a state of relaxed balance. The eyes of the wearer dilate slightly, maintaining a calm, unblinking focus that refuses to register fear, surprise, or intimidation.
    • Audible and Ambient Changes: Those standing within arm’s reach of the user perceive a faint, rhythmic acoustic hum resembling the sound of a struck crystal glass vibrating in the distance. The immediate air around the user feels abruptly still, dropping slightly in static charge and leaving nearby observers with a fleeting impression of deep, cavernous quiet.
  • Multiple Extra-Sensory Perceptions
    • Soul Sight: To observers possessing soul sight, the activation causes the avatar’s biological aura to shift from its standard hue to a deeply saturated, placid violet. Ribbons of soft psychic energy loop outward from the crown, forming an unbroken, protective torus that bends incoming sharp spikes of hostile intent into harmless ambient curves.
    • True Sight: Through the ultraviolet spectrum of true sight, the apparatus flares with intricate, glowing circuit traces that extend several inches beyond the brass frame into the air itself. Thin conduits of vibrant violet light connect the central gem directly to the avatar’s forebrain, clearly showing the psychic filter transmuting raw ambient magic into an organized, low-frequency mental barrier.
    • Tremorsense: Creatures detecting vibrations through the earth feel a distinct kinetic null point where the avatar stands. The micro-tremors of human muscle tension, shifting footing, and rapid cardiac thuds are suddenly dampened, replaced by a dense, unyielding weight as the device mechanically routes the avatar’s balance straight down into the floor.
  • Positives
    • Absolute Emotional Grounding: Fear, cognitive shock, sudden disorientation, and surprise attack panic are completely suppressed, allowing the user to make clear, logical decisions under lethal pressure without suffering combat paralysis or instinctual flinching.
    • Instant Kinetic Damping: When struck, the psionic circuit disperses impact shockwaves through the brass lattice, softening blunt concussions and protecting the brain from being rattled by physical strikes or psychic concussions.
    • Uncompromised Insight: Outside efforts to project psychological illusions, terrorize the mind, or disguise malicious body language fail, giving the user a pure, unvarnished read on enemy intent and tactical weak points.
  • Negatives
    • Suppressed Urgency: The profound psychological state of absolute acceptance can blunt the avatar’s natural self-preservation drive, making them slow to react to hazards that require immediate, desperate panic, such as sprinting away from an expanding explosion or diving clear of a collapsing stone ceiling.
    • Auditory Blunting: Because the copper leads flood the inner ear with harmonic low-frequency vibrations, subtle environmental acoustics, such as quiet footsteps sneaking from behind, the distant click of a crossbow mechanism, or hushed whispers across a room, become significantly harder to detect.
    • Post-Activation Resonance Fatigue: When the active channeling ends and the amethyst cools, the sudden return of unfiltered reality causes a sharp, dull ache behind the brow and a brief ringing in the ears as the brain readjusts to processing raw emotional stress and ambient chaotic noise.

Recipe: Assembly of the Resonant Coronet of Acceptance

Materials Needed

  • One uncut, pale amethyst gemstone of thumb size, free of major fractures, capable of functioning as a focused psionic lens.
  • One Tier 1 magic crystal catalyst, approximately the exact size and weight of a standard coin, harvested from an adult magical entity.
  • Three rods of high-purity electrical brass, rolled and annealed to a ductile thickness for spinning and chasing fine filigree.
  • Six strands of pure acoustic copper wire, drawn thin enough to conduct mechanical sound waves behind the ears.
  • Four fluid ounces of biological sap reagent harvested using a fluid collector from a meditative elder ironwood or grove tree to bind kinetic shock conduits.
  • Two fluid ounces of animal-specific blood distillate harvested via fluid collector from a calm, domesticated pack beast to serve as an alchemical psychic stabilizer.
  • One sacrificial mundane copper headband or silver chain, consumed during the forging process to pass its structural form into the new magical gear.

Tools Required

  • Standard fluid collector with fine extraction needle.
  • Precision jeweler’s hammer, needle files, chasing punches, and miniature anvil set.
  • Small alchemical glass brazier or crucible with elemental fire and water steam-assist heat regulation.
  • Brass drawing plate and wire pliers.
  • Resonant crystal tuning fork calibrated to low acoustic frequencies.
  • Workbench magnifying lens with adjustable arm.

Skill Requirements

  • Metalworking / Goldsmithing: Skill Level 5 or higher.
  • Alchemical Crafting: Skill Level 5 or higher.
  • Jewelcrafting / Crystal Faceting: Skill Level 5 or higher.
  • Relevant Trained Crafting Skill matching the Tier of the end result: Minimum Level 1 in Psionic Apparatus Crafting.

Crafting Steps

  • Extract and stabilize the organic binding fluids:
    • Utilize the fluid collector to draw four ounces of sap from the heartwood of a mature grove tree, ensuring no contaminants enter the vial.
    • Blend the sap with the two ounces of animal distillate inside the alchemical glass crucible.
    • Warm the solution gradually over a regulated low steam flame until the mixture turns a translucent, pale amber and exhibits uniform viscous drag.
  • Shape and engrave the conductive structural bands:
    • Heat the three rods of ductile brass over the forge hearth, hammering and drawing them into slender, arched ribbons shaped to cup a standard humanoid cranium.
    • Anneal the brass repeatedly in water to maintain flexural strength, preventing metal fatigue under kinetic stress.
    • Use chasing punches and fine needle files to trace internal conduit channels along the interior curve of each brass ribbon, etching geometric flow-paths for ambient thought energy.
    • Place the sacrificial mundane headband into the crucible alongside the prepared brass framing, allowing the alchemical heat to dissolve its physical integrity while infusing its structural template into the newly forged coronet bands.
  • Cut and seat the acoustic copper conduits:
    • Draw the six strands of acoustic copper wire through the wire plate to achieve uniform gauge.
    • Twist three strands together per side into counter-spiraling braids to neutralize physical audio distortion.
    • Solder the forward ends of the copper braids into the temple junctions of the brass frame, sweeping the rear ends backward into gentle outward curves calibrated to rest against the skin behind the wearer’s ears.
  • Cut, tune, and seat the focal crystals:
    • Facet the thumb-sized amethyst into a multi-angled cabochon, grinding the base flat to sit flush against the forehead plate of the brass armature.
    • Strike the resonant tuning fork and hold it against the amethyst while inspecting the interior through the workbench magnifying lens, checking for acoustic dissonance.
    • Place the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into the central under-housing beneath the amethyst mounting to serve as the battery catalyst.
    • Apply the warm amber sap-and-distillate mixture around the seat of the crystals to bond the gemstone facets directly to the brass filigree channels, sealing the conduit pathways.
  • Crimp the setting and conduct psionic calibration:
    • Carefully fold the outer decorative brass claws over the girdle of the amethyst using gentle pressure from the jeweler’s hammer, securing the gem firmly without cracking the crystal lattice.
    • Thread the exposed ends of the internal brass filigree into direct contact with the underlying Tier 1 catalyst crystal.
    • Place the assembled apparatus on the workbench and initiate a calm, focused meditation beside the item for ten minutes, maintaining an even breathing pattern to introduce the harmonic frequency of mental acceptance into the conduits.
    • Verify that the amethyst emits a faint, steady violet glow and that a sustained, low-pitched acoustic vibration hums smoothly through the copper leads, completing the construction.

Head Iron That Yields to Wind and Ceases All Weeping

Hearken now unto the ancient clay tablet of the First Shore, which the scribe of king’s grandfather made bad marks upon because the tongue of the deep grandmothers was like stones rolling down a cliff. In those days before the counting of thousands, when the great cloud of stars did spit souls upon the land like rain upon grass, there lived a smith whose hands were like wood and whose forehead was forever hot with sickness of the soul. His appellation in the old cut marks was Kael-Who-Strikes-Twice, though some men called him the Maker of Screaming Wire.

Kael did walk the mud when the great beast with four wings did yet scream across the salt water. He was a soul fetched out of the dark water by the Great Hand Lilith-Gaia, but his inside belly did not fit the meat of his new head. Every dawn the star Helios did go up into the sky, and Kael’s brains were like hornets inside an earthen pot. He looked upon the tree, and the tree did pain him; he looked upon the bull of the field, and the bull spoke noise that made his ears bleed thick water. When the soldiers of the first walled kraal came marching with bronze sticks to take the barley, Kael did grind his teeth until they cracked like dried peas. He wished to make war against the wind, to hit the thunder with a flat hammer, and to drown the tide because it pulled the world from sunrise to sunset.

There sat upon the black hill an old woman of many grandmothers whose eyes were milky like spoiled goat juice. She spoke to him through the hole of her hut, saying: “Thou art a fool who tries to cut the river with a copper sickle. When the flood cometh, the tall cedar breaketh its ribs because it is stiff like bone. But the green rush bendeth its waist into the slime, and when the gray water runneth back to the fish, the rush stands up and laugheth at the dead logs.”

Kael did not understand the speech of the old woman, for his translated ears thought she spoke of sheep guts and salt porridge. Yet he went unto his fire bellows with great fury. He took the yellow metal which maketh electricity like the lightning bug, and he pounded it upon the stone until it was as thin as the hair of a maiden. He seized the small purple stone that dropped out of the throat of an ancient horned hog that died in the red mire. He cried out: “I will make an iron for the crown of my head that shall be stiff as an oak! When the world strike me with its fist, this brass will strike the world harder, and my forehead shall shatter the teeth of the gods!”

He melted the sap of the weeping iron-trunk and poured it upon the metal ribbons. He twisted the thin red wires until they were like the whiskers of a river eel. But because his heart was filled with a very great hurry, he dropped the hot metal into the cooling tub upside down. The water screamed, and the purple rock went white and then dark purple like a bruised plum. When he pulled the crown from the trough, it was not straight and proud like the spear of an admiral; it was crooked, curled back upon itself, and twisted like two snakes sleeping in the warm dust.

Kael wept aloud, thinking his labor was dung. He cursed the star Helios, he cursed the mother-goddess who made the moon turn in the sky, and he cursed the dead ancestors who left him no gold. In his madness, he pressed the twisted brass crown upon his brow while it was yet damp and cold.

Behold, the poorly translated tablet saith: “Then did the head of Kael make a loud un-sound.”

The purple stone did not leap with flame to burn the sky. Instead, a great oil seemed to pour downward over his eyes. The iron pot of his mind, which had boiled with red fat and sharp needles, had its fire extinguished in a single blink. The screaming of the four-winged beasts in the clouds did not cease, yet it entered his ears not as spears, but as the singing of small birds in a bush. The dust of the road blew into his beard, yet he did not spit; he tasted the salt of the earth and perceived that the earth had a right to its dust.

At that very hour, there came through the thorn hedge three warriors of the Great King of the Island of Aterian. These were men of iron who ate flesh and carried spears that could pierce the breast of a mountain ram. They came to steal the bellows and slay the smith for his insolence. The leader of the spears, whose skin was painted with blue mud, raised his pike and struck Kael upon the crest of his head with all the weight of his iron arm.

The watchers of the village cried out, expecting the skull of Kael to pop like a rotten melon. But the tablet marketh the wonder: Kael did not raise a shield, nor did he bend his neck to run. He stood loose like a sack of chaff. The brass ribbons upon his brow did hum with the noise of an insect in the passion-month. When the pike struck the bronze frame, the wood of the spear did not break Kael’s bone; rather, the shock of the blow went through his sandals and fell into the dirt like water spilled upon dry sand. Kael looked upon the blue-faced warrior with eyes that were soft like a sheep that cheweth cud in the shade.

He spoke to the slayer, saying: “Thou hast struck me because thy belly is empty and thy master is a cruel king who counteth every seed. It is true that thou art here, and it is true that I am here. Why dost thou pant like a dog that hath run behind a wagon? Sit down upon this log and eat a dried fig, for the sun will go down at sixteen hours whether thou killest me or whether thou sleepest.”

The blue-faced warrior heard these words, and the tablet saith that his liver turned to water. The desire to make blood dried up in his veins like a brook in the dimming-week. He dropped his heavy pike into the dirt, sat upon the chopping stump, and wept because his grandfather had died when he was an infant. The other two spearmen looked upon the crown of brass that shone with a quiet, sleepy violet light, and they too felt their hands grow heavy. They untied their leather belts, threw down their daggers, and asked Kael if he had any buttermilk to spare.

For forty years did Kael wear the head-iron that yielded. Men came from the Great Cities of the seven-week months to bring him disputes about cattle, broken fences, and the stealing of wives. They brought their swords to his bench, screaming for the blood of their cousins. Kael would touch the purple pebble upon his forehead, look upon their red faces, and nod his head slowly. He did not tell them who was righteous, nor did he call upon the judges of the towns to hang the thieves. He merely laid his hands upon the metal wires behind his ears and whispered to them of how small their rage was beneath the great round ball of VaporSphere that hung in the sky. When they left his tent, the men were no longer shouting; they embraced each other in the lane, traded their cattle for goats, and went home to hoe their parsnips in silence.

When Kael’s hair was like dried river foam and the meat of his body grew thin, he did not run from the dark boatman. He lay down upon his straw mat while the purple stone glowed like a dying coal in the hearth. His friends gathered around to weep, but he bade them cease their wailing, for he said that a leaf which falleth from the bough doth not scream at the ground; it only maketh a soft bed for the worms of tomorrow. When his breath departed, the brass coronet did not melt or vanish into smoke; it remained upon the dry skull, shining with the same calm light that neither fighteth the sun nor feareth the eclipse.

The tablet endeth here with three scratches that mean: This is the end of the roll, buy another skin from the temple.

Moral of the story: He who maketh his spirit as an iron shield shall find that the world hath a heavier hammer to break him; but he who openeth his arms to the stroke of life hath already conquered the blow, for that which yieldeth without fear can never be thrown down.

Suggested conversions to other systems:

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

The Diadem of Relinquished Strife

  • Description: An intricate, spun-brass band inset with fine acoustic copper wires and a thumb-sized, unpolished amethyst. When donned, it hums at a low, bone-vibrating frequency that deadens panic, forcing the human ego to accept horrific truths without violent denial.
  • Equipment Category: Arcane Device / Occult Relic
  • Sanity Loss: 1D3 Sanity points upon attuning or intentionally activating its psionic frequencies.
  • Passive Stability: The wearer cannot experience Bouts of Madness triggered by sudden phobias or emotional panic. When rolling Sanity checks against cosmic horrors or psychic shocks, failing the roll caps the maximum Sanity points lost to the minimum possible amount rolled (e.g., losing 1 Sanity instead of 1D6). The investigator cannot push rolls that rely on desperate urgency, rage, or physical haste.
  • Cognitive Empathy (Active): The user spends 5 Magic Points and makes an opposed POW roll against a living, sentient human target within 10 yards. On a Regular Success, the target’s violent intent dissipates into apathy, preventing them from making offensive attacks for 1D4 rounds. On an Extreme Success, the target drops their weapon and enters a contemplative trance for 1D10 rounds.
  • Yielding Flesh (Reaction): When struck by a physical attack, the wearer may spend 3 Magic Points to relax their posture into the strike, gaining 3 points of non-magnetic ballistic/impact Armor against that single blow. However, the wearer cannot dodge during the same round.

Blades in the Dark

The Stoic Crown of the Weeping Mother

  • Description: A heavy, filigreed electroplasmic brass headpiece set with a pale violet ghost-amethyst. It bleeds kinetic momentum and panic straight into the ambient ghost field through acoustic wires resting against the temples.
  • Item Load: 1 Load (Equipped on head / Worn openly).
  • Resonant Armor: Mark 1 Armor box against physical harm (blunt force or kinetic impact) or mental consequences (terror, psychic backlash, or panic). When used against a mental consequence, the wearer avoids the consequence entirely by yielding to the reality of the threat.
  • Yielding Dissolution: When you roll a Resistance Roll using Resolve or Prowess, you may mark +1 Stress to drop your posture and embrace the blow. If you do, reduce the consequence severity by two steps instead of one, but you take the “Dazed” or “Immobile” condition until you clear a position.
  • Soothe the Room (Special Action): Spend 2 Stress to roll Consort or Sway with +1 Effect when de-escalating an active physical brawl or violent confrontation. The room’s violent momentum turns cold and heavy; on a 4/5 or 6, enemies lose their taste for blood, though a 4/5 introduces a complication such as a rival faction viewing your calm as unnatural sorcery.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)

Circlet of the Unburdened Mind

  • Item Type: Wondrous Item, Headwear
  • Rarity: Common
  • Attunement: Requires attunement
  • Armor Class: While wearing this circlet, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class, provided you are wearing light armor or no armor.
  • Resilient Mind: You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.
  • Empathic Truce: As an action, you can target one humanoid within 30 feet of you that can see or hear you. The target must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is pacified and cannot take hostile actions against you or your companions for 1 minute. This effect ends immediately if you or an ally deals damage to the target or subjects it to a harmful effect. Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a long rest.
  • Dissolution of Spite: When you take damage from a weapon attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage taken by 1d4 + your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1). The attacking creature must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or have one nonmagical handheld weapon or shield wrenched from its grip and dropped to the ground. Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a short or long rest.

Knave (2nd Edition)

Coronet of Patient Iron

  • Description: A bent circlet of spun brass with acoustic wires and an uncut purple gem. It absorbs blows by teaching the wearer’s spine to bend like a reed in a flood.
  • Item Slots: 1 Gear Slot (Worn on head)
  • Durability: 3 Quality / Usage dots
  • Armor Value: +1 Armor
  • Yield to the Hammer: When you take direct damage from a melee or missile attack, you may choose to take no damage and instead mark 1 Quality dot on the Coronet. If all Quality dots are exhausted, the brass cracks and the gem shatters, destroying the item.
  • Pacify the Kraal: Once per day, you may recite the calming song of the ancient reed to an intelligent foe within earshot. Make an opposed Wisdom check against the target’s Wisdom. If you win, the foe ceases fighting, sits down, and refuses to attack anyone unless they or their kin are struck.
  • Mental Stillness: You gain an advantage on all Wisdom and Charisma saving throws made to resist fear, sorcerous deceit, or emotional manipulation.

Fate Core

Band of the Unyielding Reed

  • Aspects:
    • Function Aspect: Cognitive Dampener of Ancient Brass
    • Flaw Aspect: Unhurried in Desperate Times
  • Stunts:
    • Harmonic Equanimity: Because you wear the Band of the Unyielding Reed, you gain a +2 bonus when using Will to defend against mental attacks, social intimidation, or magical efforts to inflict fear or confusion.
    • Dissolution of Spite: Once per conflict, when you take physical stress from a sudden melee attack, you may roll Physique or Will to defend by yielding to the strike instead of resisting. If successful, you reduce the incoming stress by 2 shifts, and you immediately place the temporary situation aspect “Reverberating Weapon” on your attacker with one free invoke.
    • Pacifying Aura: You can spend 1 Fate Point to use Empathy instead of Provoke to create an advantage against an aggressive sentient opponent within the same zone, attempting to calm their violent impulses through shared emotional clarity.

Numenera & Cypher System

Psionic Null-Coronet

  • Level: 2
  • Form: An open-frame brass circlet with acoustic copper wire leads that hook behind the ears and a thumb-sized pale amethyst resting against the frontal bone.
  • Wearable Artifact: Depletion: 1 in 1d10 (checked upon using an active psychic effect).
  • Inherent Benefit: The wearer gains an asset (+1 step in their favor) to all Intellect defense tasks made to resist mental manipulation, emotional coercion, sensory overwhelm, or psychic intrusion.
  • Effect:
    • Cognitive Pacification: By spending 2 points from their Intellect Pool, the wearer projects a calming psychic field at a single sentient target within short range. The target must succeed on an Intellect defense task (difficulty equal to the artifact level, modified by user effort); on a failure, the target abandons offensive actions and enters a tranquil, non-hostile state for one minute or until attacked.
    • Kinetic Grounding: As a reaction when suffering blunt impact or melee damage, the user can activate the device to absorb 3 points of ambient damage directly into the grounding wires. Checking for depletion is required immediately following this reaction.

Pathfinder (Second Edition)

Diadem of Calm Concurrence

  • Item Level: Item 2
  • Traits: Rare, Divination, Emotion, Mental, Primal
  • Usage: Worn, headwear
  • Bulk: Light
  • Perception and Will Bonuses: You gain a +1 item bonus to Perception checks to sense motive and a +1 item bonus to Will saving throws against mental and fear effects.
  • Resigned Stance (Passive): The diadem roots your center of balance through acoustic conduction. You gain a +1 circumstance bonus to your Fortitude DC or Reflex DC against being Shoved or Tripped.
  • Cast a Spell (Activate):
    • Frequency: Once per day
    • Action: 2 Actions (concentrate, mental)
    • Effect: You cast Calm (DC 18 Will save), targeting a single hostile creature within 30 feet. The target is flooded with tranquil understanding, dulling its violent intent without placing it into magical slumber.
  • Yield to the Blow (Activate):
    • Frequency: Once per day
    • Action: Reaction (concentrate)
    • Trigger: You are hit by a melee weapon Strike.
    • Effect: You relax your body into the direction of the impact. You gain resistance 3 against the triggering Strike’s damage, and the attacking creature must succeed on a DC 16 Reflex save or drop the weapon used for the Strike.

Savage Worlds (Adventure Edition)

Circlet of Serene Acceptance

  • Classification: Arcane Device / Magic Item
  • Encumbrance: 1 lb. (Worn on Head)
  • Toughness and Armor: Provides +1 Armor against blunt physical impacts and concussive strikes.
  • Mental Fortitude: The wearer receives a +2 bonus to Spirit rolls made to resist Fear, Taunt, Intimidation, or mind-altering arcane powers.
  • Pacifying Touch (Action): The wearer may spend an action and make a Spirit roll at -2 to project a pacifying wave at an intelligent foe within Smarts range. If successful, the target cannot initiate hostile actions or attacks toward the wearer or their companions until the end of the target’s next turn. On a raise, the effect lasts for 3 rounds or until the target suffers damage.
  • Absorption of Spite (Reaction): Once per combat encounter, when the wearer suffers a physical hit that would cause them to become Shaken or Wounded, they may make a free Spirit roll. Success negates the Shaken status or reduces the total damage by 4, as kinetic energy dissipates harmlessly into the grounding brass wires. The attacker must make a Agility roll or have their weapon knocked from their hand by psychic reverberation.

Shadowrun (Sixth World)

Cranial Harmonic Dampener

  • Classification: Optical / Neural Focus Device (Worn Gear or Bio-Acoustic Torc)
  • Availability: 3 (Legal)
  • Cost: 3,500 nuyen
  • Capacity: [1] (Occupies the headgear slot; functions as a physical trode-aligned resonance band)
  • Passive Cognitive Shielding: The user gains a +2 dice pool bonus on all Willpower-based defense tests against mental manipulation spells, emotional control, sensory overload, and complex matrix-linked psychological intrusion. The wearer cannot be intimidated by mundane social display or sudden posture posturing.
  • Pacifying Intent (Active): As a Minor Action, the wearer channels focused biocircuit pulses toward an individual target within 10 meters that can clearly see the wearer. The user makes a Willpower + Con test opposed by the target’s Willpower + Intuition. If the user achieves more hits, the target suffers a -2 dice pool penalty to all offensive combat actions against the wearer for a number of combat rounds equal to the net hits, seeing the user as a neutral party not worth engaging.
  • Shock Dissolution (Reaction): When the wearer is struck by a physical melee attack or kinetic impact, they may take an immediate Reaction to relax their neuromuscular frame into the blow. The incoming attack’s Damage Value is reduced by 2, and the attacker must roll Agility + Strength (Threshold 2) or have the kinetic recoil dislodge their handheld melee weapon, dropping it to the floor.

Starfinder (Second Edition)

Circlet of Harmonic Equanimity

  • Item Level: Level 2
  • Price: 450 credits
  • Usage: Worn, headwear
  • Bulk: Light
  • Attunement: Requires investment

  • Grounded Resignation: When an effect would knock you prone or push you against your will, you can treat your center of mass as anchored, gaining a +2 circumstance bonus to your Fortitude DC or Reflex DC against the displacing action.
  • Cognitive Pacification (Activate):
    • Frequency: Once per day
    • Action: Two Actions (concentrate, mental)
    • Effect: You project a wave of soothing neural static at a sentient target within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Will saving throw or become pacified. A pacified creature cannot direct hostile actions, ranged fire, or melee strikes against you for 1 minute or until you or your allies take hostile action against it.
  • Dissolution of Impact (Activate):
    • Frequency: Once per day
    • Action: Reaction (concentrate)
    • Trigger: You take kinetic or bludgeoning damage from a physical Strike.
    • Effect: The circlet absorbs the kinetic shock, granting you physical resistance equal to 3 against the triggering Strike. The attacking entity must succeed on a DC 15 Reflex saving throw or lose grip of the weapon used to execute the attack, causing it to fall to the floor in the attacker’s space.

Traveller (Mongoose 2nd Edition)

Psionic Resonator Band

  • Item Classification: Personal Psi-Augmentation Rig / Specialized Neural Headgear
  • Tech Level: TL 12
  • Mass: Negligible (0.5 kg)
  • Skill Requirement: Psionics 1 or Science (Psionic) 1 to operate active routines; usable as passive armor by anyone.
  • Base Cost: Cr 15,000
  • Neural Grounding: The band dampens erratic adrenaline spikes and external mental interference. The wearer receives DM+2 on all rolls made to resist psychological stress, panic, telepathic probing, or mental coercion.
  • De-escalation Field: The wearer may spend 2 Psi points (or expend one charge of its onboard micro-battery) and make a Telepathy or Social Standing check opposed by the target’s Willpower (or End DM). If successful, an aggressive target refuses to initiate hostilities for 1D6 combat rounds, perceiving the wearer as non-threatening and yielding.
  • Kinetic Attenuation: When struck by blunt trauma, thrown objects, or non-powered melee strikes, the brass-and-wire lattice bleeds impact force away from the skull, reducing total physical damage by 2 points. If an attacker uses a physical weapon to strike the band directly, the attacker must make a Dexterity check (8+) or drop the striking weapon due to sudden harmonic feedback.

Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay (Wrath & Glory)

Torc of Blessed Resignation

  • Value: Tier 1 (Common)
  • Keywords: IMPERIUM, PSYKER, OCCULT
  • Rarity: Uncommon
  • Slot: Headgear

  • Quell the Wrathful (Action): As a standard Action, the wearer gestures with calm resignation toward a sentient enemy within Medium range. Make an opposed Willpower test against the target’s Resolve. For each shift gained, the target suffers a -1 penalty to all attack tests targeting the wearer until the end of the round, overwhelmed by an inexplicable, bone-deep sense of futility.
  • Absorb the Smite (Reaction): When hit by a successful melee attack, the wearer may spend 1 Glory to drop into the blow, reducing the total damage taken by an amount equal to their Willpower score. The attacker must pass an Agility test (Difficulty 2) or have the jarring resonance wrench the striking weapon from their grasp, causing it to scatter D3 meters away.
