Psionic 318 of the Harmonious Stride

Lore

  • Engineered during the early integration of the island nations’ guild networks, this apparatus was created by wandering tinkers and diplomatic heralds who recognized that physical isolation degrades cognitive resolve. When an avatar travels alone along the monster-haunted roadways connecting coastal garrisons to central capitals, the mind frequently experiences sensory fatigue and isolation shock. To solve this, early psionic engineers treated companionship not as a sentimental emotion, but as an applied resonant frequency. Built from interwoven copper wire, spun electrum, and anchored by a smooth cabochon crystal, the item broadcasts a low-frequency psychic carrier wave. When the bearer travels alongside a companion, the device harmonizes their biometrics, breathing cadences, and mental momentum, transforming a solitary journey into an integrated collective march where burdens are felt as shared weight rather than personal exhaustion.

Skills Gained While Openly Worn

  • +1 Insight (Temporary skill point)
  • +1 Empathy (Temporary skill point)

Passive Magics

  • Synchronized Pace: When traveling within 10 feet of a willing party member or companion, the wearer seamlessly mirrors their kinetic rhythm. The avatar matches the walking speed and footing adjustments of the adjacent companion without conscious exertion, ignoring rough terrain penalties that do not impede the partner.
  • Shared Solace: Isolation and fear-inducing effects lose their purchase while accompanied. The avatar gains advantage on saving throws against being frightened, shaken, or dazed so long as an allied creature is within 15 feet.
  • Cadence of Endurance: The ambient psychic link reduces biological strain during collective movement. When performing prolonged forced marches or manual labor alongside at least one companion, the avatar expends half the normal stamina, staving off the fatigued condition.

Activable Magics

  • Echoes of the Companion: As an action, the wearer channels a mental tether toward one willing ally within 30 feet. For 10 minutes, the user and the chosen target can silently share sensory input—allowing the user to see, hear, or smell whatever the ally perceives, provided they remain within 60 feet of each other.
  • Burden Shared: As an action, the wearer touches their torc and taps into the life force of an adjacent ally who is suffering from a non-permanent physical or mental condition (such as dazed or bleeding). The wearer voluntarily assumes the condition onto their own avatar, immediately ending the affliction on the ally.
  • Rallying Step: As a reaction when an ally within 15 feet is targeted by an attack, the wearer rapidly closes the distance by moving up to 10 feet toward the ally without provoking reactions. If the wearer ends this movement adjacent to the ally, both gain a +1 bonus to their Armor Check against that triggering attack.

Acquisition, Trade Environments, and Valuation of the Psionic 318 of the Harmonious Stride

  • Direct Acquisition Methods
    • Awarded by adventuring or trade guilds upon completing long-distance overland escort contracts between state borders or coastal wharfs.
    • Retrieved from the personal belongings dropped by an unpossessed scout, caravan guard, or courier who perished along untamed roadways, or salvaged alongside the soul crystal of a fallen possessed traveler.
    • Discovered within the forgotten supply crypts or ruined way-stations established during the early wilderness expansion eras.
    • Crafted by an artisan specialized in mental foci using braided acoustic wire, spun electrum, a thumbnail-sized rose-quartz cabochon, and stabilizing fluids drawn from cooperative pack animals with a fluid collector.
    • Inherited immediately upon possessing an adult avatar whose previous daily labor involved pathfinding, diplomatic envoy duty, or paired military scouting.
  • Guild Supply Depots and Outfitter Posts
    • Setting: Located inside walled hub settlements and near central roadway gates, these municipal posts cater directly to registered adventuring parties, regional caravans, and dispatch couriers. Shelves hold heavy travel gear, leather harnesses, map cases, and glass cases displaying attuned travel jewelry under clean oil lamps.
    • Purchasing: Buyers must conduct transactions openly. Registered members of the local Merchant Guild, Wayfarer Faction, or Adventurers Guild receive a mandatory 10% discount on the item’s baseline valuation multiplied by their Tier rank. Balances are settled through the World Bank via Mind’s Eye accounting, incurring the standard 1% transaction surcharge.
    • Selling: An avatar presenting the torc to a guild quartermaster must wait while its conductivity and crystal core are appraised. The quartermaster haggles down approximately 10% of the item’s valuation times the seller’s Tier level. The agreed funds are deposited directly into the seller’s World Bank ledger, alongside written entries recording the avatar’s identity and faction status.
    • Cost: The baseline suggested value is 140 silver coins (or 14 gold coins). A standard traveler pays the full 140 silver. An attuned Tier 1 guild member purchases the torc for 126 silver. When sold by an unbonded Tier 1 adventurer, the post credits 126 silver to their bank ledger.
  • General Outpost Traders and Waystation Bazaars
    • Setting: Situated at busy river wharfs, mountain passes, and crossroads inns outside major cities, these family-run shops feature cluttered wooden counters packed with dry rations, lanterns, salvaged wagon parts, and secondhand protective accessories hanging from wooden pegs.
    • Purchasing: The shopkeeper adheres strictly to a seller’s market and “buyer beware” conditions, offering no warranties regarding prior attunements or cosmetic wear on the copper braiding. Guild discounts do not apply unless the merchant specifically displays an active charter medallion.
    • Selling: The outpost merchant haggles aggressively, knowing travelers in remote zones often need fast funds or provisions. Transactions are paid via the World Bank ledger if within municipal network reach, or in mixed coinage if the trader’s terminal connection is intermittent.
    • Cost: Depending on local demand and the frequency of road ambushes in the area, purchase prices range between 120 silver and 170 silver. Outpost merchants buying from an adventurer will typically offer between 95 silver and 120 silver.
  • Clandestine Fences and Contraband Vaults
    • Setting: Tucked away in unmonitored dockside basements, damp drainage conduits beneath port towns, or private booths behind unlicensed gambling dens, these operations function entirely outside state taxation and guild oversight.
    • Purchasing: Patrons deal strictly in unrecorded physical currency, trading in raw silver, electrum, or gold coins; World Bank transfers are flatly refused to prevent municipal paper trails. Prices are steep, as the inventory carries no royal tax levies or official transaction logs.
    • Selling: Fences purchase the torc immediately with hard coin, asking no questions regarding prior owners, road ambushes, or whether the gear was stripped from a corpse. If an organized syndicate has a pending order for undetected sensory-linking gear, the fence may pay a higher sum than ordinary open markets.
    • Cost: Buyers seeking an untraceable neck torc pay between 180 silver and 260 silver in physical coin. Adventurers selling to a black-market fence receive between 130 silver and 210 silver in loose currency, depending on the syndicate’s immediate logistical needs.

Tactical and Environmental Roleplay Applications of Psionic 318 of the Harmonious Stride

  • Mountain Passes, Jagged Ridges, and High-Altitude Precipices
    • Defensive Roleplay: While ascending icy switchbacks or traversing wind-swept stone ridges where sudden mountain gusts threaten to sweep travelers into the chasm, the wearer remains locked in lockstep beside a designated vanguard ally. Through the torc’s synchronized stride, the avatar does not slip or lose footing on loose scree, unconsciously matching the anchor points and balance adjustments of their companion. If an overhead rockfall or swooping predator targets the partner, the wearer immediately enacts Rallying Step, lunging across the shale to press shoulder-to-shoulder with their ally, using their combined presence to brace against the falling debris and raise their defensive threshold.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Facing mountain bandits or territorial cliff-dwellers who hold higher elevation behind stone ramparts, physical positioning is everything. The wearer activates Echoes of the Companion, linking senses with an agile scout scaling an adjacent crag. Looking through the scout’s eyes, the wearer tracks the blind spots of the ridge sentries behind their fortifications. Once the scout reaches striking distance, the wearer closes in silently along the blind approach, timing an assault precisely as their ally strikes, capitalizing on the shared sensory feed to trap the enemy in an inescapable crossfire along the cliff ledge.
  • Murky Swamplands, Mangrove Bogs, and Toxic Mires
    • Defensive Roleplay: Navigating deep wetlands choked with venomous reeds, sinking mud, and deceptive bog pools normally drains an adventurer’s physical reserves within hours. Under the cadence of endurance, the wearer breathes in synchronization with a front-line pack-bearer or warrior, marching for leagues through thick, boot-sucking muck without succumbing to biological fatigue. When a companion steps into a hidden cluster of barbed thorn-vines and begins bleeding profusely, the wearer does not stop to unpack bandages under enemy missile fire; they place a calm hand upon their neck torc, using Burden Shared to accept the bleeding condition onto their own flesh, instantly halting the ally’s hemorrhaging so the vanguard can keep moving without losing momentum.
    • Offensive Roleplay: When tracking amphibious ambushers or submerged monsters lurking beneath the dark surface scum of a mire, the wearer projects Echoes of the Companion into the perceptions of a familiar or submerged companion. By experiencing the vibrations and aquatic scent-trails perceived by their partner, the wearer detects the ripples of an approaching predator long before it breaks the surface. The wearer can then trigger an assault directly into the muddy water at the exact coordinates perceived by their companion, turning an enemy ambush into a devastating preemptive strike.
  • Subterranean Tunnels, Cavern Megacities, and Deep Mines
    • Defensive Roleplay: In pitch-black tunnel systems where acoustic echoes can disorient the mind and claustrophobia runs rampant, the torc acts as a vital psychological anchor. Surrounded by chittering subterranean monstrosities, the wearer draws strength from the Shared Solace passive, entirely resisting the paralyzing dread and dazed confusion caused by unnatural subterranean shrieks so long as an allied fighter stands within arm’s reach. If a sudden burrowing strike targets the party’s rear rank, the wearer immediately shifts into defensive alignment using Rallying Step, throwing themselves into the breach to deflect the claw strike away from a vulnerable ally.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In lightless cavern corridors where speaking or lighting lanterns guarantees attracting burrowing horrors, the wearer uses Echoes of the Companion to coordinate silent room-clearing maneuvers. Linking sight with a point-man who possesses darkvision, the wearer navigates total darkness with flawless precision, navigating around jagged stalagmites without stumbling. As soon as the point-man identifies a cluster of sleeping cave beasts, the wearer coordinates an simultaneous charge through purely telepathic cues, hitting the targets simultaneously from two separate cavern passages without a single verbal order ever being uttered.
  • Crowded Port-Town Bazaars, Narrow Alleys, and Smuggler Warehouses
    • Defensive Roleplay: Escorting a high-priority diplomat or merchant through the cramped, volatile alleyways of a seaside trade port exposes the party to sudden back-alley shiv strikes and crowd-concealed assailants. The wearer remains glued to the client’s side via Synchronized Pace, flowing effortlessly through fleeing pedestrians and overturned fruit carts without getting separated. When a disguised assassin lunges from a shadowed doorway with a poisoned dagger aimed at the escort target, the wearer enacts a split-second Rallying Step, snapping into the blade’s path to absorb the glancing blow and granting both themselves and the client a momentary defensive armor surge.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In enclosed warehouse raids or dockside tavern confrontations, chaotic brawling can easily devolve into friendly-fire mishaps. The wearer relies on the shared sensory link of Echoes of the Companion to peer around interior crates and structural support beams through a flanking ally’s line of sight. While the enemy focuses their attention entirely on the flanking ally at the door, the wearer slips through a rear loading hatch, knowing exactly which direction the adversaries are facing. Guided by the companion’s direct visual feed, the wearer executes a flawless blindside attack, neutralizing the opposing leader before the warehouse guards realize a second attacker has entered the room.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective
    • Somatosensory and Thermal Sensation: The moment an active link is triggered, the braided electrum and copper strands tighten subtly around the base of the throat and nape with a firm, comforting warmth. The central rose-quartz cabochon loses its ambient chill, radiating a steady, rhythmic pulse of heat that synchronizes directly with the user’s pulse. A distinct sensation of lightened muscular burden spreads across the shoulders and neck, as if the physical weight of traveling gear were suddenly shared with another set of limbs.
    • Auditory Modulation: Normal atmospheric noise softens at the edges, replaced by a subtle, resonant harmonic frequency that hums through bone conduction behind the collarbones. When linked with an ally, the user can faintly perceive the breathing patterns, footstep rhythm, and heartbeat of their designated companion as an internalized, rhythmic acoustic metronome, eliminating any feeling of spatial isolation.
    • Optical and Cognitive Clarity: The user’s field of vision remains anchored, but when tapping into an ally’s senses, an overlay of dual-perspective awareness blossoms within the Mind’s Eye. Rather than conflicting, the incoming visual and spatial cues from the partner appear as a faint, translucent picture-in-picture stream, allowing the avatar to track flank angles and rear movement without turning their head.
    • Resonant Mental Awareness: A profound emotional calm settles into the center of the user’s consciousness. Feelings of loneliness, travel weariness, and tactical hesitation evaporate, replaced by an intuitive understanding of the companion’s immediate physical readiness and direction of momentum.
  • Observer’s Perspective
    • Visual Manifestations: Observers watching the avatar see the teardrop terminals at the collarbones ignite with a soft, rose-tinted luminescent core. The braided copper and electrum wires gleam with a running ripple of faint violet and pink sparks that race around the neck band toward the nape. When the sensory link establishes, thin, ethereal wisps of lavender-hued psychic vapor curl outward from the cabochon setting, dissolving into the air after traveling several inches toward the linked partner.
    • Physical Posture: The avatar’s physical movements become noticeably fluid and coordinated. Hesitation in gait vanishes as their strides align perfectly with the adjacent ally, creating the distinct visual impression of two beings moving with a single shared kinetic purpose, mirroring each other’s foot placement and weight shifts without looking at one another.
    • Audible and Ambient Output: Standing within arm’s reach of the user, observers hear a quiet, rhythmic hum resembling a struck bronze chime vibrating in unison with two heartbeats. The immediate air surrounding the avatar’s collar feels lightly charged with static warmth, carrying a faint scent reminiscent of warm river stone and polished electrum.
  • Multiple Extra-Sensory Perceptions
    • Soul Sight: Under soul sight inspection, the avatar’s biological aura extends a luminous, spiraling ribbon of rosy violet energy directly outward from the throat chakra. This ribbon arcs across physical space to anchor seamlessly into the soul matrix of the target companion, creating a visible, pulsing feedback loop of vitality and shared consciousness that circulates between both life forms.
    • True Sight: Viewed through the ultraviolet wavelengths of true sight, the torc reveals complex, micro-etched psionic conduits flaring with brilliant magenta light along the inside of the braided wires. Ambient magic from the surrounding Weave is drawn into the rear rose-quartz battery, refined into an orderly, double-helix carrier wave, and projected as an unbroken acoustic-psychic tether linking both entities.
    • Tremorsense: Creatures tracking ground vibrations perceive two distinct footstep cadences abruptly locking into a single, unified harmonic pattern. The impacts of both travelers against the earth register at identical micro-intervals, creating an acoustic frequency that makes it difficult for subsurface predators to differentiate between two separate individuals or calculate individual body masses.
  • Positives
    • Flawless Kinetic Coordination: The seamless synchronization of movement, balance, and spatial awareness allows two travelers to navigate difficult terrain, tight corridors, and chaotic battlefields as a cohesive unit without tripping over one another or getting separated.
    • Instant Mental Reassurance: Psychological distress, combat panic, isolation shock, and fear-based debuffs are actively dampened by the continuous presence of the partner’s psychic tether, keeping both minds focused and functional under extreme pressure.
    • Split-Angle Situational Awareness: Accessing the ally’s sensory feed provides 360-degree environmental awareness, virtually eliminating blind spots and granting early warning against flanking strikes or hidden traps.
  • Negatives
    • Sensory Dissonance Under Shock: If the linked companion suffers sudden catastrophic trauma, burns, or blinding attacks, a sharp, sympathetic phantom shockwave ripples back across the tether, causing the user to experience a split-second of visceral phantom pain and disorientation.
    • Reduced Independence: The profound habituation to moving in synchronized cadence can leave the user feeling momentarily sluggish, off-balance, and cognitively adrift if the companion abruptly falls unconscious, teleports away, or breaks the link unexpectedly.
    • Peripheral Audio Masking: The continuous internal acoustic hum and the faint auditory feed from the companion’s breathing can make very quiet, localized environmental sounds—such as the faint click of a floor pressure plate directly under the user’s foot—harder to hear in quiet surroundings.

Recipe: Forging of the Resonant Stride Torc

Materials Needed

  • One flawless, thumb-sized rose-quartz gemstone cut into a smooth cabochon, free of internal fracture lines, capable of acting as an empathic carrier lens.
  • Two matching teardrop-shaped rose-quartz stones, polished smooth for the anterior terminal sockets.
  • One Tier 1 magic crystal catalyst, precisely the size and weight of a standard minted coin, harvested from an adult magical entity.
  • Four rods of high-ductility electrical acoustic copper, drawn and annealed for braiding.
  • Two rods of refined electrum alloy (equal parts gold and silver), purified to conduct cognitive harmonic frequencies.
  • Three fluid ounces of organic tree sap reagent extracted using a fluid collector from a mature heartwood tree located near a well-traveled trade crossroads.
  • Two fluid ounces of animal-specific blood distillate harvested with a fluid collector from a loyal, paired beast of burden or herd-lead animal to serve as a biological synchronization anchor.
  • One sacrificial mundane bronze neck torc or copper collar, fully consumed during the melting and binding process to transfer its form and structural resonance into the final piece.

Tools Required

  • Standard fluid collector equipped with a fine extraction needle and vacuum plunger.
  • Precision jeweler’s hammer, needle files, horn-shaped mini anvil, and burnishing tools.
  • Wire-drawing plate, hand vise, and round-nose wire-twisting pliers.
  • Alchemical bench crucible with an elemental fire and water steam-assisted heating cradle.
  • Acoustic dual-tone tuning fork calibrated to heart-rhythm resonance.
  • Benchtop jeweler’s magnifying glass with articulated arm clamp.

Skill Requirements

  • Metalworking / Wire-Smithing: Skill Level 5 or higher.
  • Alchemical Crafting: Skill Level 5 or higher.
  • Jewelcrafting / Stone Setting: Skill Level 5 or higher.
  • Relevant Trained Crafting Skill matching the Tier of the end result: Minimum Level 1 in Psionic Apparatus Crafting.

Crafting Steps

  • Harvest and distill the biological binding reagents:
    • Deploy the fluid collector to draw three fluid ounces of clear sap from a healthy crossroads heartwood trunk, keeping the collection chamber free of bark particulate.
    • Draw two fluid ounces of bodily fluid distillate from a cooperative, docile draft animal using the extraction needle.
    • Pour both reagents into the alchemical bench crucible and heat gradually over a low steam-regulated flame, stirring with an electrum rod until the liquid reduces into a pale pink, honey-like viscous resin.
  • Form, draw, and braid the conductive neck bands:
    • Heat the four copper rods and two electrum rods until cherry red, annealing them in cold water to ensure maximum pliability.
    • Draw the metal rods through the wire-drawing plate to produce eight equal-length strands of acoustic copper wire and four equal-length strands of electrum wire.
    • Place the sacrificial mundane bronze torc into the crucible alongside base metal trimmings, melting it completely to release its structural pattern into the alchemical weave.
    • Anchor six pairs of alternating copper and electrum wires into a hand vise and braid them tightly together into a flexible, curved tubular torc designed to comfortably seat around the base of an avatar’s neck.
  • Forge the terminal cups and crystal housing:
    • Hammer the remaining electrum into two teardrop terminal cups designed to cap the ends of the braided collar at the clavicle line.
    • Fashion a circular bezel frame with a filigree mesh backing out of copper to seat the primary rose-quartz cabochon at the rear nape.
    • Solder the terminal cups to the anterior wire ends and secure the central bezel housing directly onto the posterior apex of the braided torc using low-temperature silver solder.
  • Seat and calibrate the focal stones:
    • Place the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into the lower chamber beneath the central rear bezel to serve as the internal mana battery.
    • Coat the base of the primary thumb-sized rose-quartz cabochon and the two teardrop stones with the warm alchemical resin.
    • Press the primary rose-quartz cabochon firmly over the Tier 1 catalyst crystal, and seat the two teardrop crystals into the collarbone terminal cups.
    • Use the jeweler’s hammer and burnisher to fold the outer electrum bezel rims over the girdles of all three stones, locking them tightly against the braided metal without crushing the gem lattices.
  • Conduct psionic harmonic attunement:
    • Strike the dual-tone tuning fork on the edge of the anvil and touch the vibrating stem directly to the central rose-quartz setting.
    • While the metal and crystal hum in unison, sit directly across from a willing companion within arm’s reach and maintain steady, synchronized breathing for a full ten minutes.
    • Observe that the rose-quartz stones ignite with a soft, pulsing pink-violet light and the braided wires emit a barely audible, continuous rhythmic pitch, indicating that the carrier pathways are permanently stabilized.

Twin-Neck Ring of Walking Two-Together When Road Has Teeth

This mark of words was scratched by a priest’s nephew upon a split calf-skin when the first kingdom of the red clay did not yet know how to write straight lines. It is translated out of the old guttural blowing-tongue of the sea-folk, who spoke with their throats like bubbling soup. In the long backward years, when the great yellow eye of Helios did go up into the middle sky at eleven strokes every day, the highways between the mud walls were not quiet. Big tooth-things with nine feet did live in the dry ditch, and if a solitary man walked to carry his dried onions, his head was eaten before the sun reached the sixteen strokes of evening.

There lived in that country two low-born diggers of turnips whose names in the broken leather are set down as Olo-The-Left-Foot and Vahn-The-Right-Hand. They were souls who had tumbled out of the cloud of sparks when the Earth-Mother Lilith-Gaia fished into the soup of dead worlds. When they woke upon the damp soil, their bellies were full of great memory-sickness. Olo did remember a town of tall iron chimneys that threw smoke into the air like fat black serpents, and Vahn did remember sitting in a wooden house where women made sweet milk from brown beans. Because they remembered things that did not exist upon the mud of Saṃsāra, other diggers did throw clods of dirt at their ears and call them cracked gourds.

Olo was born with weak marrow in his shins; when he took twenty paces, his kneecaps did click like dry spoons. Vahn was born with a thick chest and oxen-shoulders, but his eyeballs were cloudy like curdled whey, and he could not see a ditch until his toes were falling into the bullfrogs. Therefore, when the King’s collector came with an ash stick to demand the tax of four turnip-sacks, the two men could not earn enough silver to buy peace. The tax-master spat upon their doorstep and said: “If the four sacks be not laid upon the central wharf before the week of Darkness closeth, your skins shall be cut into straps to tie the king’s wagon-tongues.”

The wharf was eighty miles towards the setting of the water, where the sea runneth east to west with great hunger. Between their hovel and the wharf was the Forest of Snapping Ribs, where the wild cats of Gaialilith’s early whistling did grow bigger than river barges.

Olo wept into his sleeve and said: “My shins will snap before the first milestone. Thou wilt have to leave me for the red pigs to chew, and then thy blind face will walk into a bramble bush until the crows pick thy teeth.”

Vahn struck his mallet upon the hearth-stone and made a roaring: “I shall not be eaten for the sake of two pennies of tax! We have the red metal that conducts the lightning-juice, and we have the pale white-pink stone that the miner found in the craw of the great mud-swallow.”

Vahn was not a high mage of the twenty-story cloud towers, nor did he possess twenty books of ink. He was only a tinkerer who knew how to twist copper wire with pig lard. For four nights of the Buzzing-week, while the great gas-belly VaporSphere made a blue bruise across the night sky, Vahn did blow his charcoal fire. He melted the red wire with the white electrum that he stole from the belt-buckle of a drowned sailor. He braided the threads together, four and four and four, until the wire looked like the fat gut of an eel. He set the pale pink pebble at the bend where the neck bone maketh a knot, and he made two little drop-cups to lie upon the throat like two cold plums.

When it was finished, the translation saith: “The ring of neck did smell of cold grease and old goat-fat.”

Vahn put the braided wire around the throat of Olo, and he took the twin ends and tied them with a copper rivet around his own neck, so that a thin wire of electrum went between them like a clothesline.

Then did the parchment make many confused marks about what entered their ears. The translation recordeth: “A noise of two drums did start inside their belly-bags, but the two drums did hit the leather at the same tick-beat.”

Olo looked down at his crooked shins, and behold, his marrow was not like wet clay anymore. The weight of his pack, which held forty pounds of parsnips and salt fish, did not press upon his small collarbone; it felt to him as if an invisible second ox walked behind him, holding up the corners of the load. When he lifted his left boot, Vahn’s right heel did lift from the mud at the very same split of a second, without a word being whistled between their teeth.

And Vahn, whose eyes were like grey broth, did gasp with a wet whistle. For through the pink stone that pressed against his neck-knots, the sight of Olo’s sharp hazel eyes came into his dark brain like a torch brought into a potato cellar. He did not see his own fingers, but he saw the road through the eyes of the man tied to him. He saw the sharp rocks, he saw the yellow puddles, and he saw the white moss that maketh a traveler slip into the snake-weeds.

The parchment saith: “They did not walk as two diggers; they walked as one four-legged spider made of skin and turnip-meal.”

On the third day, within the thick dark of the Forest of Snapping Ribs, the wind died and the trees were full of wet silence. Out of the briars leaped a scaled cat of the ancient Menagerie, having six paws and jaws shaped like an iron wedge. The beast had an appetite for salt meat and let out a bellow that made the water in their water-skins tremble. In the days of their lonesomeness, Olo would have fallen upon his belly to scream, and Vahn would have swung his mallet at the wind and hit only birch leaves.

Now, the wire upon their throats began to hum like a pot of boiling broth. The terror in Olo’s belly did not become a panic that maketh a man run into a tree; the wire sucked half of his fright into the wide chest of Vahn, where it turned into cold iron stubbornness. And the strength of Vahn’s heavy arms did leak backwards into Olo’s trembling knees.

When the six-pawed cat jumped to crack Olo’s spine, Vahn did not need to ask: “Where is the monster?” Through the linked sight, Vahn saw the cat’s yellow belly open above them. Without a spoken order, both men leaned their hips to the right at the identical stroke. The beast’s iron claws missed the leather jerkin by the thickness of a fingernail, tearing only air. As the beast struck the gravel, Olo kicked its front kneecap with his newly braced foot, and Vahn brought down the heavy turnip-mallet upon the back of the beast’s skull with the force of two men striking together. The beast made a bubbling whistle and died in the mud, leaving a small magic crystal of the first tier in its throat.

When the two diggers came to the great stone gate of the central wharf, the sun Helios was at fourteen strokes. They were not panting; their breath came in one quiet, shared whistle, like two bellows hitched to the same water-wheel. The gate-soldiers, who had iron hats and spears five cubits long, raised their hands to bar the crossing, demanding the toll of two silver groats for two men.

Olo spoke through his teeth, and Vahn moved his lips at the very same time, speaking the selfsame words: “Count us not as two wandering beggars who may be robbed. We are one yoke, one breath, and four eyes. We have brought the parsnips for the king’s belly, and if thou dost bar the road, we shall strike thy gate with the hammer of two spirits.”

The soldiers looked upon the braided copper collar that shone with a strange, oily pink smoke at their necks. They saw that when the left man blinked his eye, the right man’s eyelid fell at the same blink. The soldiers were seized with a great inward goose-flesh, believing them to be a two-headed demon of the old elementals. They did not take the two silver coins; they threw open the iron gate, fell upon their knees in the horse-manure, and let the turnip-wagon pass without a tax.

The skin-scroll endeth with many broken scratches, stating that the two men lived until their hair was white like salt, and neither ever walked one pace without the other until the death-hour came. When Vahn’s breath ceased in the winter season, Olo took the shears and cut the copper braid, and the tablet saith that within three sunrises Olo also lay down upon the rush mat and closed his eyes, for his legs would not remember how to step alone.

Moral of the story: A single stick is snapped by a small goat, and a lone eye is fooled by the shadow of a cloud; but two who bind their breath into a single march make the stone road soft and turn the teeth of the monster into broken glass.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)

Torc of the Harmonious Stride

  • Item Type: Wondrous Item, Neckwear
  • Rarity: Common
  • Attunement: Requires attunement by a creature while in the presence of a willing ally
  • Defensive Ward: While wearing this torc, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class, provided you are within 10 feet of a conscious, friendly creature.
  • Shared Solace: You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened, charmed, or dazed as long as a friendly creature is within 15 feet of you.
  • Echoes of the Companion: As an action, you can designate one willing allied creature you can see within 30 feet. For the next 10 minutes, you can perceive the world through the ally’s senses (sight, hearing, and smell) instead of your own, as long as you remain within 60 feet of each other. You can switch between your senses and their senses as a bonus action. Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a long rest.
  • Rallying Step: When a friendly creature within 15 feet of you is targeted by an attack, you can use your reaction to move up to 10 feet directly toward that ally without provoking opportunity attacks. If you end this movement within 5 feet of the ally, both you and the ally gain a +1 bonus to AC against the triggering attack. Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a short or long rest.

Knave (2nd Edition)

Torc of the Twin Step

  • Description: A heavy braided neck-band of copper and white electrum, holding a smooth, pale stone that hums against the spine whenever two comrades walk side by side.
  • Item Slots: 1 Gear Slot (Worn on neck)
  • Durability: 3 Quality / Usage dots
  • Armor Value: +1 Armor (Active only when standing within arm’s reach of an ally)

  • Intercepted Stroke (Reaction): When an adjacent ally takes damage from a physical weapon strike, you may expend your reaction and mark 1 Quality dot on the Torc to pull half of that damage onto your own Hit Points, sparing your companion from receiving the full brunt of the blow. If the item’s Quality reaches 0, the copper unravels and the quartz core splits, destroying its magic.

On a raise, the damage taken by the wearer is reduced by one level of Wound severity.
  • Linked Awareness (Action): As an action, the wearer may spend an action and make a Smarts roll to attune senses with an ally within Smarts range. If either runner detects an ambush, both are treated as having rolled the highest Intuition + Reaction initiative test between them to avoid surprise.
  • Shared Harm (Reaction): When a linked ally within 2 meters is targeted by a physical attack and sustains Physical or Stun damage, the wearer may spend a Reaction and 1 point of Edge to absorb the kinetic reverberation.
