  • Lore:
    • Across the high permafrost plains and glacial valleys of northern Saṃsāra, ice is neither dead stone nor empty water; it is living skin that breathes beneath winter storms.
    • Migratory tundra herders and high-fell scouts constantly contend with sudden meltwater floods, fragile river ice, and mountain crevasses that threaten entire sled caravans.
    • To traverse and shape these frozen expanses without offending the native frost-wights, noaidi shamans carve dedicated chisels from the shed crown antlers of lead caribou stags that survived bitter eighty-day blizzards.
    • Bound to the spirits of hard frost and the deep quiet of packed glaciers, these tools allow young tundra wardens and apprentice cryomancers to anchor themselves against biting gales, verify the thickness of river crossings, and coax elemental frost into defensive walls.
    • While simple in finish, each chisel carries the memory of ancestral migrations across the ice, serving both as an everyday survival implement and as a spiritual bridge to the ancient frost-beings sleeping beneath the mountains.
  • Description:
    • A ten-inch, chisel-shaped tool carved from a solid, weathered tine of shed tundra reindeer antler, smoothed to an ivory finish by bone files and cold river stones.
    • The working blade is beveled into a stout, hardened wedge tip, scorched with pale noaidi runes depicting the six-pointed snow-crystal and the resting hoof of the reindeer spirit.
    • Seated firmly within the broadened crown butt of the antler is a thumb-nail sized, uncut Tier 1 magic crystal of frosted pale-aquamarine, constantly coated in a faint, dry rime of crystalline frost.
    • The grip is wrapped in cross-stitched, oil-cured seal leather cord, terminating in a wrist lanyard adorned with two pierced river-quartz stones and a tuft of white reindeer beard hair.
    • When brought close to the skin or held in an open palm, the chisel radiates a dry, numbing chill that leaves a faint scent of winter ozone, crushed lichen, and river ice.
  • Detailed Stats:
    • Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
    • Item HP: Avatar maximum HP plus 6
    • Resilience: 7
    • Armor Check (AC): +1 AC to the avatar when carried in hand or worn at the belt (a localized mantle of biting mountain air slows and deflects physical strikes)
    • Weight: 0.8 pounds
    • Attunement: Simple attunement (requires spending one short rest seated bare-handed upon solid ice or snow-crusted stone at twilight, scraping rhythmic runic grooves into the frost while humming an ancestral noaidi cold joik)
  • Slot:
    • Belt (slung via seal-leather loop at the hip) or Held in One Hand (used as an implement, weapon, or focus)
  • Passives Magic:
    • Hoof of the White Reindeer: While the chisel is held or worn at the belt, the bearer gains perfect traction upon sheet ice, frozen scree, and compacted glaciers, moving without slipping or suffering movement penalties on frozen surfaces.
    • Frost-Bane Insulation: The chisel absorbs harsh environmental temperature drops; the bearer is naturally shielded against extreme sub-zero cold and hypothermia, ignoring mundane freezing temperatures.
    • Sounding the True Ice: When the beveled antler tip taps against a frozen body of water or glacier wall, the crystal vibrates with a clear harmonic ring, instantly revealing the ice’s structural integrity, depth, and whether hollow fissures or flowing meltwater lie beneath.
  • Activable Magics:
    • Rime-Spike Anchor (Normal Somatic):
      • Taking an action to strike the chisel tip against any stone, earth, ice, or wooden surface while speaking a harsh winter syllable for less than six seconds.
      • The frosted pale-aquamarine crystal flares, instantly flashing out thick, anchor-like tendrils of hard glacial frost that weld the bearer’s position to the surface for up to 10 minutes.
      • This prevents the user from being forcibly moved, knocked prone, or swept away by high winds or tidal rushes; repeating the syllable instantly releases the bond.
    • Glacial Glaze Projection (Normal Somatic):
      • Taking an action to sweep the chisel in a wide, low arc along the ground while blowing across the beveled tip.
      • A 15-foot cone of flash-freezing mist coats the terrain in slick, razor-sharp black rime for 1 minute; creatures walking through the zone slip and fall prone unless moving with extreme care, and open water or mud in the area freezes solid into walking ice.
      • Expends 1 charge from the crystal core; the crystal regains its charge after a short rest in freezing conditions or during a long rest.
    • Permafrost Bulwark (Ritual, Somatic):
      • Taking an action to trace a circle upon packed snow, ice, or damp gravel while reciting an ancestral noaidi chant of the glacier mountain for greater than six seconds.
      • Over two continuous minutes of ritual focus, the chisel coaxes moisture from the surrounding air to erect a five-foot-wide, five-foot-tall slab of dense, translucent glacial ice that acts as a physical barrier and half-cover against attacks, lasting for 1 hour before naturally thawing.

Tundra Trading Posts, Glacial Chandleries, and Caribou Camps for the Reindeer-Antler Ice-Chisel

  • High-Pass Outposts and Mountain Caravanserais:
    • Located at the jagged crests of alpine trade routes, hanging above windswept scree slopes and crevassed passes where sled-drivers, wool-merchants, and winter pilgrims rest their beasts.
    • The chisel hangs inside a fleece-lined wicker bin behind the counter, nestled between wrought-iron crampons, whale-oil lanterns, and lengths of braided hemp climbing line.
    • Transactions rely on minted frontier silver, uncut slate pebbles, or barter credit for smoked mutton, dried split peas, and warm wool mittens.
    • The factor inspects the implement by tapping the beveled antler edge against a block of cellar river-ice to test the crystal’s acoustic resonance, checking the seal-skin grip for dry-rot, and testing the sharpness of the runic carving.
    • Retail prices in mountain outposts run between 85 and 110 silver pieces, while direct buyouts or pawn trade-ins from passing herders yield between 35 and 45 silver pieces.
  • Fjord-Head Harbors and Winter Sealing Chandleries:
    • Situated along rocky sea-lochs where fishing ketches dock amidst drifting pack-ice, adjacent to blubber-rendering kettles, netting sheds, and salt-cellars.
    • Stored on wall-racks among bone harpoon tips, iron ice-picks, sealskin boots, and casks of waterproof pine pitch.
    • Business is settled using foreign trade thalers, coastal brass tokens, or bartered barrels of salted herrings, seal oil, and tanned hides.
    • The harbor-master tests the tool by plunging the tip into a bucket of slush to verify the rapid formation of black rime, ensuring the aquamarine crystal has not cracked under previous sea-spray exposure.
    • Retail shelf prices average 95 to 120 silver pieces, with trade-in salvage values hovering between 40 and 50 silver pieces.
  • Nomadic Reindeer-Camp Lodges and Herder Tents:
    • Found out upon the permafrost flats, migrating behind the seasonal moss-pastures within conical hides, skin tents, and birch-pole lodges.
    • Displayed laid upon an embroidered red wool blanket by the hearth fire, resting beside antler spoon cases, carved birch burr bowls, and sinew sewing kits.
    • Transactions bypass urban coinage entirely, negotiated through direct exchanges of prime yearling hides, bundles of dried sinew, cured caribou tongues, or unworked river-copper.
    • An elder herder evaluates the implement by holding the antler tine up to the hearth smoke, singing a low joik to hear if the bound frost-wight answers with a clean, bell-like hum, and ensuring the caribou tine was taken from a natural spring shed rather than a slaughtered beast.
    • Barter value equates to roughly 75 to 90 silver pieces worth of winter provisions, with immediate trade-in value yielding around 30 to 40 silver pieces in practical tundra gear.
  • Imperial Border Garrisons and Expedition Outfittery Wards:
    • Located inside timber-and-granite frontier forts where imperial surveyors, boundary cartographers, and provincial snow-wardens muster.
    • Kept in dry pine armory lockers, organized beside snowshoes, fur-lined cloaks, climbing spikes, and iron survey markers.
    • Purchased through official chancellery requisitions, imperial treasury silver, or stamped bank notes issued by the territorial governor.
    • The quartermaster inspects the chisel with calipers to measure the beveled blade’s taper, scrapes a stone block to test for structural stress, and verifies the runic cold-glyphs against an official frontier inventory codex.
    • Standard outfitting purchase costs run between 115 and 135 silver pieces, with official institutional buy-backs fixed at 50 to 55 silver pieces.

Tactical Deployment and Roleplay of the Reindeer-Antler Ice-Chisel Across Environments

  • Windswept Permafrost Tundra and Glacial Ridges:
    • Crossing barren expanses where eighty-mile-an-hour gale blizzards can sweep a traveler off a cliff edge, stability is the primary defense. Defensively, when caught in an open whiteout or facing a flash-gale, the herder drops low and strikes the chisel into the frozen soil to trigger Rime-Spike Anchor. Frost tendrils root the wielder firmly in place, allowing them to anchor an entire roped sled team against howling gusts without being dragged into abyssal crevasses.
    • Offensively, while tracking tundra wolves or rival raiders across hard snowdrifts, the warden sweeps the chisel in a wide arc to unleash Glacial Glaze Projection. The smooth surface of a mountain track instantly converts into a sheet of frictionless, razor-edged black rime. Charging beasts or skirmishers lose all footing and skid off the trail, leaving them exposed and sprawling while the herder, empowered by Hoof of the White Reindeer, closes the distance with sure-footed speed.
  • Frozen Rivers and Fragile Spring Lake Crossings:
    • Negotiating seasonal waterways where meltwater hollows the underside of the sheet ice, unseen drowning hazards are everywhere. Defensively, the scout roleplays caution, rhythmically tapping the antler tip along the route using Sounding the True Ice. The clear harmonic ring of the aquamarine crystal changes to a low, discordant buzz over rotted ice, warning the caravan away from thin channels before wagons plunge through.
    • Offensively, when pursued across a thawing lake by heavy cavalry or armored border guards, the wielder waits until the enemy ventures onto the frozen surface. Sweeping the chisel outward with Glacial Glaze Projection, the user flash-freezes the top layer into heavy, brittle rime while fracturing the underlying slush. The enemy mounts lose their balance and crash into the fragile crust, while the herder skates effortlessly across the ice to freedom.
  • Alpine Mountain Passes and Cliffside Scree:
    • Scaling narrow, vertical paths along granite cliffs where falling boulders and rockslides pose constant lethal hazards. Defensively, when a rockfall is triggered from the heights, the cryomancer spends two minutes chanting an ancestral mountain joik to manifest a Permafrost Bulwark. The conjured slab of dense, translucent glacial ice forms a sloping canopy over the climbing party, deflecting cascading stones and shale into the chasm below.
    • Offensively, cornered along a narrow ledge by mountain bandits, the user strikes the chisel into the stone wall to enact Rime-Spike Anchor, grounding their position so they cannot be bull-rushed over the edge. Holding the line with the implement, the user uses the chisel’s beveled wedge as an improvised point-blank weapon, driving the freezing antler into the armor gaps of attackers to induce paralyzing frostbite.
  • Muddy Lowland Trenches and Marshy River Deltas:
    • Operating far south of the permanent snowline within soggy bogs, floodplains, and rain-soaked military ditches where knee-deep mud bogs down movement. Defensively, the user invokes the chisel’s localized cold mantle. The +1 AC aura of chilled air creates a micro-front that solidifies the immediate muddy ground underfoot into firm frost, preventing the avatar from sinking while deflecting thrown mud, wet ropes, and low-angle strikes.
    • Offensively, facing heavy footmen advancing through a swampy bottleneck, the user blows across the beveled tip to trigger Glacial Glaze Projection. The deep, thick mud instantly flash-freezes into jagged, glassy ice ridges. The sudden phase shift traps the boots of marching soldiers within frozen mire, pinning their frontline in place while the rest of the company trips over the sudden frozen obstacles.
  • Underground Caverns and Mineral Mines:
    • Moving through subterranean mine shafts and subterranean water tunnels where flash floods, cave-ins, and poisonous subterranean gases lurk. Defensively, when an underground aquifer ruptures, threatening to drown the mining tunnel, the user rapidly invokes Permafrost Bulwark across the shaft mouth. The glacial wall seals off the surging water, freezing the breach shut and giving miners ample time to evacuate up the shaft.
    • Offensively, when subterranean beasts or tunnel ambushers attempt to corner the party against a dead-end wall, the cryomancer sweeps the chisel low across damp floor stone. The resulting wave of flash-freezing rime freezes pool water and slick fungal mats solid, grounding the creatures’ claws in sub-zero frost and numbing their lower limbs to cripple their mobility.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Visual Perception: The moment the winter syllable is uttered and the chisel strikes the ground, the pale-aquamarine crystal atop the antler flares with an icy, pale teal luminescence. The carved runes along the shaft glow like bioluminescent lichen under snow, while crystalline tendrils of dense, needle-sharp rime shoot rapidly outward from the beveled tip, locking into the stone, ice, or earth with web-like crystalline anchors.
    • Auditory Perception: A deep, resonant crack—like the booming fracture of lake ice under a midnight freeze—echoes straight into the user’s palms and forearms, followed immediately by a sharp, high-pitched ringing hum that harmonizes with the user’s own breath.
    • Tactile Perception: A shocking, dry wave of sub-zero cold surges up the seal-leather grip, though it does not burn or cause frostbite; instead, it feels like dipping one’s fingers into crisp mountain snow, causing the muscles to tense with immovable, solid rigidity as if the user’s boots were fused to the mountain core.
    • Olfactory Perception: The surrounding air fills with the biting, astringent scent of fresh blizzard frost, crushed lichen, dry mountain slate, and the faint, musky scent of winter reindeer pelt.
    • Gustatory Perception: An instantaneous cold-water metallic sharpness coats the back of the throat and tongue, reminiscent of inhaling ice-fog on a mountain pass or biting clean glacier ice.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Permafrost Sonar: The user feels a momentary, vast extension of consciousness through the subterranean stone and frost, sensing underground hollows, fissures, and the shifting density of soil and bedrock beneath their feet.
      • The Herder’s Weight: A psychic sensation of massive, rooted inertia settles in the bearer’s center of gravity, projecting the feeling that attempting to push them would be equivalent to shoving a granite boulder embedded in frozen peat.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Visual Perception: Observers witness a sudden flash of turquoise and milky white light at the crown of the chisel. In a fraction of a heartbeat, thick, root-like tendrils of translucent glacial ice erupt from the tool’s tip, crawling across boots, stones, and earth, anchoring the wielder with glistening, spidering frost spikes.
    • Auditory Perception: A loud, dry report like the snapping of dry pine branches in severe cold sounds out, immediately followed by the rustling, hiss-like crackle of moisture instantly freezing along the ground.
    • Tactile Perception: A sudden downdraft of freezing air washes outward in a five-foot radius, dropping the ambient temperature by twenty degrees in a single second and causing onlookers’ cloaks to stiffen with light frost.
    • Olfactory Perception: A sharp, stinging draft carrying the clean, ozone-laden scent of an approaching snowstorm displaces any surrounding smoke, dirt, or stale air.
    • Gustatory Perception: Observers nearby register a dry, cold prickle across their lips as atmospheric moisture precipitates out of the air.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Aura of Immovability: Bystanders instinctively perceive the bearer as an immovable, dangerous terrain feature rather than a vulnerable mortal, discouraging direct bull-rushes or physical grapples.
      • Frost-Shock Ringing: Those standing within arm’s reach experience a faint, low-frequency hum behind their cheekbones as the ice wight anchors into the bedrock.
  • Positives:
    • Absolute Physical Stability: The user is physically rooted to the terrain, making it nearly impossible for high mountain gales, rushing meltwater torrents, or charging foes to knock them prone or displace them.
    • Instant Surface Solidification: The rapid flash-freezing action instantly turns muddy, unstable, or rotted surfaces into hard, load-bearing permafrost.
    • Non-Lethal Grounding: The anchor establishes a secure climbing, rappelling, or bracing station on sheer ice or crumbling rock without requiring hammers, iron pitons, or noisy drilling.
  • Negatives:
    • Voluntary Immobility: While the rime-anchor is active, the wielder cannot take normal running or repositioning strides without using an action to speak the release syllable.
    • Brittle Footing on Return: When the ice tendrils are shattered or dismissed, they leave behind fractured, slick shards of pulverized rime that can cause allies lacking snow-traction to slip.
    • Thermal Signatures: In dark caverns or snowy fields, the pale aquamarine flare and glowing runic channels act as an unmistakable visual beacon to hostile scouts and predators.

Crafting Recipe: The Glacial Herder’s Reindeer-Antler Ice-Chisel

  • Materials Needed:
    • One shed crown antler tine from an adult tundra reindeer stag (at least ten inches long, straight-grained, free of bore-worm cavities or frost cracks).
    • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (thumb-nail sized, uncut, cloud-veined pale aquamarine, carrying a continuous dormant chill).
    • Four feet of oil-cured seal leather lacing (one-eighth inch wide, supple and waterproofed).
    • Two ounces of clarified pine pitch blended with powdered river slate (used as an all-weather bonding adhesive).
    • Two naturally water-smoothed white river-quartz pebbles (drilled through the center).
    • One lock of coarse white beard hair taken from a winter-killed lead caribou stag.
    • Half an ounce of rendered seal tallow or mountain sheep marrow for conditioning the carved horn.
    • A dry pinch of dried arctic lichen, juniper needles, and powdered mountain shale for the spirit-smoking smudge.
  • Tools Required:
    • Coarse and fine bone rasps and half-round cabinet files.
    • A broad-bevel chisel carving iron and fine steel gravers for runic etching.
    • An antler-handled hollow punch and a hand pin-vise drill with fine bits.
    • Smooth granite polishing stones and wet-and-dry quartz scouring powder.
    • A small soapstone brazier and iron tongs for smudge-curing.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Trained Skill Level 4 or higher in Bonecraft / Antler Carving, Traditional Toolmaking, or Arcane Artifice.
    • Practical grounding in Sámi noaidi frost-spirit invocation, animist weather divination, and low-tempo luohti chant cadence.
    • Familiarity with crystalline seat-fitting, pitch bonding, and cold-weather leather lacing.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1: Selecting and Shaping the Antler Blank
      • Take the shed reindeer antler tine and cut it to a clean ten-inch length, preserving the natural widened crown base at the butt.
      • Using a coarse bone rasp, shape the forward working tip into a stout, flat wedge bevel angled at thirty-five degrees for strength against hard stone and ice.
      • Work the length of the shaft with fine half-round files and wet granite polishing stones until the surface is smooth to the touch, retaining the natural curvature of the antler.
    • Step 2: Carving Runic Channels and Sounding Grooves
      • Using fine steel gravers, carve the traditional noaidi glyph of the six-pointed snow-crystal into the center of the beveled face.
      • Etch the outline of the resting caribou hoof along the lateral spine of the shaft, cutting the channels deep enough to hold runic resin without weakening the antler wall.
      • Rub the carved grooves with powdered river slate mixed with melted seal tallow, wiping away the excess to leave dark, sharp glyph lines against the pale bone.
    • Step 3: Boring the Crown Seat and Mounting the Crystal
      • Using an antler-handled gouge and hand pin-vise, hollow out a thumb-nail sized cylindrical socket into the wide crown butt of the antler.
      • Warm the clarified pine pitch and slate dust mixture until semi-viscous, pouring a measured bead into the bottom of the cavity.
      • Seat the uncut pale-aquamarine Tier 1 crystal firmly into the socket, embedding its lower half into the pitch while leaving the exposed facets protruding from the crown.
      • Allow the pitch to cure in sub-zero air until completely hardened, ensuring the crystal cannot shift or shatter under percussive strikes.
    • Step 4: Lacing the Grip and Dressing the Lanyard
      • Drill a three-sixteenths-inch lanyard hole horizontally through the antler shaft just below the crystal’s mounting socket.
      • Cross-stitch the four feet of oil-cured seal leather tightly around the middle four inches of the shaft, creating a raised, textured handle that provides firm grip in wet, freezing conditions.
      • Thread the remaining leather tails through the drilled lanyard hole, sliding the two pierced river-quartz stones over the ends.
      • Bind the tuft of white caribou beard hair into the terminal knot of the wrist lanyard with wrapped sinew, sealing the knot with a drop of warm pine pitch.
    • Step 5: Animist Consecration and Frost-Wight Joik
      • Place the completed tool atop a flat slab of natural river-ice above the smoking soapstone brazier, smoldering dry mountain lichen and juniper needles.
      • Sing an ancestral noaidi cold joik into the aquamarine crystal for ten continuous minutes, rhythmically tapping the beveled tip against the ice slab.
      • Continue the cadence until the crystal responds by flaring with a pale teal glow, coating the entire antler shaft in a permanent, dry rime of frost that persists even beside the hearth fire.

Bone Horn of White Beast Which Fastened Slipping Mountain Unto Under-Stone

In the days when the clouds of Saṃsāra had not yet chosen whether to become rain or iron, there lived upon the spine of the Northern Rib a clan of men who walked behind the tails of four hundred white deer. The chief of these walkers was an old man named Maur, whose eyebrows were so heavy with dry rime that he had to lift them with his thumbs whenever he wished to look upon the midday sun.

Maur had seven sons, but the third son was a boy called Aslak of the Crooked Rib, who was born during the moon of the Screaming Willow. Because Aslak’s left ankle was turned like a dried root, he could not run upon the crust of the snow behind the fleet cows, nor could he cast the three-braided leather rope over the crown of the charging bulls. Therefore, his brothers gave him the task of staying beside the kettle in the skin tent, boiling the dry bark of the mountain birch and scraping the fat from the skins of dead fish with an old scraper of gray slate.

Now in those years, the master of the high peak was not a man, but an old frost-wight whose skin was made of thousand-year blue ice, whose teeth were hanging icicles three arm-lengths long, and whose breath smelled like the bottom of a dead well. The name of this being was Bor-Vættir, which in the tongue of the stone-scratchers signifieth The-One-Who-Eats-The-Knee. Bor-Vættir lived within a deep cleft where the water never runneth, and he hated the walking clan because their small fires of reindeer dung made tiny holes in his great blue blankets of hard ice.

Every winter, Bor-Vættir would climb upon the topmost rock when the dark season was ninety nights long. He would blow his cold spittle down the chimneys of the rock, turning the moss into glass so that the deer could not smell the green pasture beneath, and their hooves would break upon the slick stone until their legs were as limp as wet leather pouches.

In the year of the Great Shivering, the frost-wight became very hungry for the flesh of the four-legged ones. He went to the edge of the great shelf called The Hanging Kettle, which was a vast lake of solid mountain-frost held above the valley by only three pillars of rotted slate. Bor-Vættir began to dance upon the ice with his two iron feet, singing: “Let the slate break! Let the white mountain slide down like boiling lard poured from a copper ladle! Then the men with the two legs and the beasts with the four legs shall be smashed flat like dried bilberries under a grinding-stone, and I shall lick their marrow out of the split bones until the spring star cometh!”

The mountain began to groan with a sound like ninety bulls bellowing inside an earthen cellar. Large cracks, wide enough to swallow a laden sled and four dogs, raced across the blue crust toward the skin tents of the clan.

The brothers of Aslak took their bone spears and their skin bags of grease and began to run toward the lower valleys, screaming: “The ceiling of the sky is falling into our porridge! Drop the dry meat and run upon the light foot, for the mountain hath turned into grease!”

Old Maur tried to stand upon his snowshoes, but the wind of Bor-Vættir was blowing so fiercely that his wood frames were caught like bird feathers, and he was thrown upon his hip, rolling down the frozen crust toward the mouth of a dark gorge.

Aslak of the Crooked Rib was sitting within the cold hearth-stones. He had no fast legs to carry him down the rocks, nor had he a sled of five ribs. But in his leather apron he had a ten-inch tine of hard antler, which he had picked up in the spring from the snow-bed where the great King-Deer of the herd had died of extreme years. The antler had been carved by Aslak during the dark nights; he had scraped its nose into a flat wedge like an adze-blade, etched upon its flank the sign of the deer’s hoof and the winter star, and in its crown he had pressed a cloudy blue water-stone which he had taken from the belly of a dead mountain trout.

When the ground beneath his feet began to tilt like a skiff in a whirlpool, Aslak crawled upon his hands and his crooked knee out of the skin flap. He saw his father sliding toward the black maw of the gorge; he saw the four hundred white deer huddled together on the middle ice, their hooves slipping upon the glass-rime so that they fell against one another, breaking their shins and wailing with human voices.

Aslak took the antler chisel in his two hands. He did not cry to his brothers to carry him, nor did he hide his head in his reindeer coat. He drove the wedge-shaped nose of the antler straight into the blue surface of the sliding mountain.

As the horn struck the ice, Aslak opened his dry mouth and sang the ancient luohti which the white caribou sing when the wolves are howling on the four quarters of the wind—the song that hath no words, but only the sound of cold water running beneath the stone.

KRRR-RAAAACK!

The cloudy aquamarine stone in the crown of the horn flashed with an illumination like the green curtains that dance across the midnight sky. From the tip of the antler, there sprang out forty-four roots of pale, needle-hard permafrost. They did not spread like soft water; they drove through the ice like iron nails, piercing through the thirty yards of creeping blue frost until they reached the ancient granite bones of the mountain floor.

The earth gave a shudder so immense that Bor-Vættir fell upon his blue chin on the high peak, snapping two of his icicle teeth against a boulder.

The moving glacier stopped. It ceased its downward rush as suddenly as a hound brought up on a short chain of boiled rawhide. Where the antler had struck, a great circle of white, frost-rooted rime blossomed outward across the slope. The surface, which had been as slick as lard on a hot skillet, instantly turned into rough, bite-hard snow-crust that offered deep purchase to every cloven hoof.

The four hundred deer caught their footing; their black hooves dug into the newly formed permafrost, and they stood firm against the wind like a forest of gray birch saplings.

Old Maur, whose body had been sliding toward the black cleft, came to a halt upon the very lip of the chasm, his sheepskin tunic caught by three creeping fingers of rime that reached out from Aslak’s chisel like the hands of an old grandmother pulling a child away from the fire-pit.

Bor-Vættir stood upon his peak and screamed with a voice of grinding stones: “Who is the small worm that hath nailed my white blanket to the black rock?”

The frost-wight leaped down from the precipice, falling through the air like a great blue boulder to crush the skin tent and the boy who knelt beside it.

Aslak did not pull the chisel from the stone. He kept his left hand upon the seal-leather binding, and with his right thumb he tapped the etched snowflake upon the tine. He blew a breath of his own warm belly-air across the beveled wedge, shouting upward: “The mountain is not thy bread, old marrow-sucker! It is the floor of the four hundred!”

A sudden, sharp cone of sub-zero mist exploded upward from the horn’s collar, rising into the sky like a spear of frozen ozone. When Bor-Vættir struck the mist, his ancient blue heart—which had stayed fluid only because of the malice within it—instantly flash-froze into solid, brittle spar. The weight of his own fall carried him through the air, but when he struck the permafrost bulwark that had risen around Aslak’s knees, the great frost-wight shattered into sixty thousand small blue gravel-stones, which rolled harmlessly down the scree like river pebbles.

When the dust of the frost settled, the seven brothers came creeping back up the valley upon their bellies, their spears dragging behind them in the snow, expecting to find only red grease and splintered tent-poles.

Instead, they found the four hundred deer standing peacefully upon the hardened crust, chewing the gray lichen which the sudden frost-burst had cracked free from the rock. They found old Maur sitting upon a boulder of frozen rime, rubbing his bruised hip with seal oil; and in the center of the camp sat Aslak of the Crooked Rib, his hand still resting upon the antler chisel, which remained anchored twenty cubits deep into the bedrock of the mountain.

His brothers fell upon their knees and offered him their bone spears and their collars of silver fox, saying: “We will make thee the Master of the Herd, for thou hast broken the teeth of the peak with a dead bone.”

Aslak shook his head, and with a single whispered winter syllable, he drew the chisel lightly from the permafrost, sliding it back into the seal-skin loop at his belt. “A spear is only good to make a hole,” said the boy, “but a wedge of bone that knoweth the joik of the white deer can hold the earth together when the fat men begin to slide.”

Moral of the Story: The swift foot and the long spear are of no account when the very ground beneath the camp decamps toward the abyss; for it is not the runner who fleeth the whiteout who saveth the herd, but the rooted hand that knoweth how to drive an honest bone into the marrow of the rock and bid the mountain stand still.

  • Item Properties:

    • Frost Mantle: While worn at your belt or held in hand, a localized perimeter of biting sub-zero air shields you, granting a +1 bonus to Armor Class against melee weapon attacks.
    • Hoof of the White Reindeer: You ignore difficult terrain caused by ice, frost, or deep snow, and you cannot slip or fall prone on frozen surfaces.
    • Cold Resistance: You have resistance to cold damage and suffer no adverse effects from ambient temperatures down to -50°F.
