  • Lore:
    • In the tightly knit settlements of Saṃsāra, violence and theft within a clan or frontier trade outpost are considered spiritual pollutions that disrupt communal harmony.
    • When a crime occurs in the long dark of winter, ordinary physical traces often become obscured by soot, grease, animal tallow, and drifting snow.
    • Ancestral noaidi investigators—serving as arbiters, settlement elders, and hearth-constables—crafted dedicated detection implements using the shed skull plates and orbital eye-bones of winter foxes, beasts celebrated in folklore for their uncanny ability to perceive unseen trails through blizzard conditions.
    • Bound to spirits of memory and watchful domestic ancestors, these lenses do not merely magnify physical matter; they illuminate the emotional disturbances, latent guilt, and residual spiritual disturbances left at points of transgression.
    • While classified as a common instrument among outpost watches, each loupe functions as an indispensable forensic tool for young investigators seeking to uncover the truth without falsely accusing kin.
  • Description:
    • A four-inch handheld magnifying lens set within a frame carved from the dense, aged orbital eye-socket bone of a mountain fox.
    • The outer rim of the bone housing is smoothed and inscribed with fine, scrimshawed noaidi glyphs representing the discerning eye, the unraveling knot, and the scales of ancestral justice, darkened with birch-wood soot.
    • Mounted securely within the bone circle is a clear, cut disc of natural ice-quartz, displaying faint, smokey pale-indigo veining that swirls subtly when exposed to body heat.
    • The short handle is fashioned from twisted copper wire bound over a core of dried willow root, ending in a small loop threaded with a braided caribou-leather cord.
    • Peering through the lens reveals a faint, violet-tinged hue across the field of view, accompanied by a subtle, ozone-like scent of cold ash and smoldering hearth-pitch.
  • Detailed Stats:
    • Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
    • Item HP: Avatar maximum HP plus 5

    • Armor Check (AC): +1 AC against surprise attacks or ambushes when carried in hand or worn suspended around the neck (ancestral instincts sharpen peripheral awareness)
    • Weight: 0.5 pounds
    • Attunement: Simple attunement (requires spending a short rest in quiet contemplation at the threshold of a hearth or council lodge, polishing the lens with soot-ash while humming an ancestral noaidi joik of truth-seeking)
  • Slot:
    • Neck (worn hanging against the chest via caribou-leather cord) or Held in One Hand (used as an optical implement or focus)
  • Passives Magic:
    • Scent of the Hidden Tread: While held or worn, the bearer’s mundane senses of examination are heightened; the user can spot microscopic tool marks, faint cloth fibers, scraped bloodstains, and disturbed snow or soot that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye.
    • Guilt-Gleam Luminescence: When examining an object or surface within five feet that was directly handled by an individual experiencing acute guilt, fear of exposure, or malice within the last 24 hours, the quartz disc casts a faint, flickering pale-indigo glow over the contact point.
    • Threshold Inquest: When stepping through an entrance where a recent crime or forced entry occurred, the copper-wrapped handle produces a gentle, rhythmic pulse against the user’s skin, warning of concealed tampering, lock picking, or broken seals.
  • Activable Magics:
    • Echo of the Transgression (Normal Somatic):
      • Taking an action to press the quartz lens directly against a piece of physical evidence (such as a discarded tool, bloodied cloth, or broken lock) while speaking an ancestral inquiry for less than six seconds.
      • The pale-indigo veins in the crystal swirl rapidly, granting the user a fleeting, ghostly sensory impression of the last creature to handle the item, revealing their approximate build, whether they were injured, and the dominant emotional state they held during contact.
      • Usable twice per day; charges refresh after a long rest.
    • Soot-Trail Tracing (Normal Somatic):
      • Taking an action to blow a pinch of dry hearth soot across the lens while looking through the loupe across an area.
      • For up to 10 minutes, the user perceives an illuminated, pale-violet luminescent trail highlighting the exact footsteps and path taken by an individual who fled the scene within the past 12 hours.
      • Expends 1 charge; the loupe regains this function following a short rest in a sheltered settlement or camp.
    • Hearth-Vow Scrutiny (Ritual, Somatic):
      • Taking an action to place the lens between oneself and an individual undergoing formal questioning, chanting a noaidi joik of communal order for greater than six seconds.
      • Over two continuous minutes of steady observation during an interrogation, the spirit within the loupe reacts to spoken statements: when the subject speaks a deliberate, self-serving falsehood, the lens fogs momentarily with grey ash-mist visible only to the bearer.

    • Displayed in brass-trimmed glass vitrines beneath brass oil lamps, resting on velvet cushions next to balancing scales, surgical bone saws, and anatomical drawings.
    • Transactions rely on merchant bank drafts, fine silver ingots, or trade in rare alchemical reagents and refined crystals.
    • The antiquarian tests the lens under a directional reflector lamp, using a micrometer to measure the fox-bone frame’s orbital thickness and checking the quartz disc for chips or optical aberrations.
    • High-end curio retail prices average 100 to 125 silver pieces, with consignment buyouts settling between 45 and 55 silver pieces.

Forensic Deployment and Tactical Roleplay of the Soot-Bone Loupe Across Environments

  • Narrow Urban Alleys and Crowded Tenement Slums:
    • Navigating tight, refuse-strewn city streets where footpads, pickpockets, and cutpurses vanish into labyrinthine backalleys. Defensively, when entering a blind stairwell or unfamiliar court where an ambush has been staged, the user holds the loupe by its copper-bound handle. The Threshold Inquest passive pulses a warm, rhythmic warning against the bearer’s palm, betraying tripwires, loosened floorboards, and doors deliberately unlatched by waiting assailants, while the +1 AC bonus shields against surprise shank thrusts from the shadows.
    • Offensively, pursuing a fleeing thief through a crowded market square where muddy tracks have been trampled by hundreds of boots, the investigator blows hearth soot across the quartz lens to activate Soot-Trail Tracing. The chaotic mud fades into background noise as a radiant, pale-violet set of glowing boot-prints illuminates the exact escape path, winding behind fish-stalls and across coal-chutes to corner the suspect in their hideout before they can fence the stolen goods.
  • Frontier Timber Garrisons and Guarded Stockades:
    • Operating within fortresses and outpost compounds where mutiny, pilfered rations, or saboteurs threaten internal survival during long winter sieges. Defensively, when inspecting the garrison’s supply stores or powder magazine, the investigator peers through the loupe to examine locked doors and iron padlocks. Scent of the Hidden Tread exposes microscopic scratches along keyways and scraped wood fibers, alerting the garrison commander to unauthorized lock-picking attempts before the saboteur can return to ignite the store.
    • Offensively, when a sentry is found murdered at their post without a clear witness, the constable presses the loupe’s quartz disc against the victim’s torn tunic or the discarded weapon hilt to invoke Echo of the Transgression. The swirling indigo veins reveal a ghostly silhouette of the killer’s heavy frame, their injured limp, and the cold malice they harbored, allowing the investigator to systematically search the barracks and confront the wounded traitor directly.
  • Windswept Permafrost Camps and Turf Lodges:
    • Managing nomadic seasonal gatherings where clan blood-debts, stolen sled dogs, or illicit boundary crossings cause bitter disputes between families. Defensively, walking into a tense council tent where hidden knives are concealed beneath furs, the loupe’s Guilt-Gleam Luminescence alerts the user to danger. Weapons and leather straps touched by clan members contemplating betrayal or violent outbursts flicker with an unmistakable, faint violet glow, giving the noaidi prior warning to reposition allies or de-escalate before steel is drawn.
    • Offensively, during a formal clan assembly to resolve accusations of cattle-raiding or theft, the investigator initiates Hearth-Vow Scrutiny. Holding the loupe up between themselves and the accused while chanting a steady noaidi inquiry, the investigator watches the quartz. As the suspect swears a false oath before the clan elders, the lens instantly fogs with grey ash-mist, breaking the liar’s narrative and providing undeniable proof of perjury without shedding clan blood.
  • Subterranean Mine Tunnels and Smuggler Vaults:
    • Navigating pitch-black mining shafts, drainage sewers, and stone vaults where moisture, coal dust, and darkness conceal criminal transactions. Defensively, advancing through a tunnel where a criminal gang has laid poisoned spikes or deadfall traps, the user relies on Scent of the Hidden Tread to spot minute traces of disturbed rock dust, scraped mortar, and fresh oil drops along the stone walls, keeping the party clear of fatal choke-points.
    • Offensively, when raiding an abandoned underground smuggler’s cache where false walls and hidden vaults conceal contraband, the user scans the area with the loupe. Physical contact points on stone levers, concealed hinges, and false bricks that were gripped with frantic urgency or fear of discovery radiate bright indigo light via Guilt-Gleam Luminescence, instantly exposing secret compartments without hours of blind demolition.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Visual Perception: The moment soot is blown across the quartz lens or an ancestral inquiry is spoken, the pale-indigo veining within the stone swirls into an incandescent violet spiral. Peering through the bone aperture, mundane shadows flatten out, and residual points of touch flare with a ghostly neon luminescence. Footsteps left by a fleeing culprit appear as sharp, ultraviolet impressions upon the floor, complete with faint tendrils of glowing vapor rising from each tread.
    • Auditory Perception: A soft, chimney-like draft sighs directly into the user’s ear, resembling the distant fluttering of raven wings or wind rushing down a stovepipe. This is accompanied by a rhythmic, clock-like ticking sound that accelerates when the user points the lens toward concealed physical evidence.
    • Tactile Perception: The copper wire binding the handle warms noticeably against the palm, shifting from cellar-cold metal to the feverish temperature of fresh wood embers. A subtle, tingling static charge prickles the wielder’s fingertips and the bridge of the nose.
    • Olfactory Perception: An immediate, dry aroma of cold birch-ash, smoldering hearth-pitch, and wet fox fur fills the nasal passages, cutting entirely through ambient rot, sewage, or damp subterranean mold.
    • Gustatory Perception: A dry, chalky taste settles at the back of the tongue, akin to the bitter mineral tang of licking river slate or tasting fine chimney soot.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Moral Residue (Psychometry): The bearer registers a sudden, heavy pressure in the center of the chest whenever looking at an object handled with violent intent, instinctively feeling the perpetrator’s elevated heart rate, panic, and lingering remorse.
      • Temporal Echo: For a split second, the immediate scene visually desaturates, superimposing a translucent, phantom silhouette of the room as it appeared moments before the transgression occurred.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Visual Perception: The scrimshawed fox eye carved into the bone frame seems to widen slightly, while the quartz disc casts an eerie, pale-violet spotlight across the floor or wall. When aimed at an unwitting suspect or hidden compartment, onlookers notice the air around the target ripple with faint, heat-haze distortion.
    • Auditory Perception: Nearby companions hear a faint, dry rustle—like dry birch leaves scraping across packed snow—originating from the center of the loupe, followed by a low, vibrating hum that vibrates in the teeth.
    • Tactile Perception: Anyone standing within five feet feels a sudden draft of dry, furnace-warm air pass over their face, quickly contrasting with the chilly room.
    • Olfactory Perception: Observers catch a sudden, pungent whiff of blown-out tallow candles and clean hearth smoke drifting through the immediate space.
    • Gustatory Perception: Those directly in front of the lens experience a fleeting dryness on their lips, as if stepping in front of an open woodstove.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Gaze of the Hearth-Wight: Bystanders experience an uncanny sensation of being weighed and judged by an unseen domestic elder, provoking an involuntary urge to confess petty faults or check their pockets.
      • Unsettling Transparency: Individuals with hidden guilt or contraband feel momentarily exposed, perceiving the investigator’s gaze as penetrating straight through outer garments and skin.
  • Positives:
    • Absolute Forensic Clarity: Obscured, wiped, or snow-drifted physical evidence becomes glaringly obvious, bypassing mundane attempts to wash away blood or sweep away bootprints.
    • Objective Interrogation Aid: Provides non-invasive, infallible detection of deliberate lies and emotional agitation without requiring physical torture or aggressive coercion.
    • Concealment Piercing: Instantly flags false bottoms, secret compartments, and picked locks by identifying where guilty hands rested during the crime.
  • Negatives:
    • Tunnel-Vision Fixation: Peering through the illuminated quartz narrows the investigator’s effective peripheral sight, leaving them vulnerable to unobserved flank attacks from outside the lens’s field.
    • Sensory Residue Drain: Experiencing the residual terror and malice of violent criminals leaves the user with a lingering headache and nervous exhaustion after extended scrutiny.
    • Conspicuous Luminescence: The pale-violet beam and glowing footsteps shine brightly in darkened alleys and nighttime alleys, completely compromising stealth and alerting hidden accomplices to the investigation.

Crafting Recipe: The Hearth-Constable’s Soot-Bone Loupe

  • Materials Needed:
    • One intact orbital eye-socket bone plate taken from a winter-killed mountain fox (cleaned, degreased, and sun-bleached without cracks).
    • One Tier 1 natural ice-quartz disc (two inches in diameter, cut and polished with subtle, natural pale-indigo or smoky-violet rutile inclusions).
    • Six feet of annealed fine copper wire (softened over a charcoal fire for tight wrapping).
    • One dried, seasoned willow root spindle (four inches long, straight and pencil-thick, to serve as the core handle).
    • Three feet of supple, braided caribou-leather cord for the suspension strap.
    • One ounce of clarified spruce resin melted with crushed charcoal and powdered iron-pyrite dust (used as a grounding setting cement).
    • Two ounces of fresh, dry chimney soot gathered from a long-burning clan hearth fire.
    • A dry pinch of wild mountain thyme, dried juniper needles, and shredded fox hair for the smoldering invocation smudge.
  • Tools Required:
    • Curved bone-shaping scrapers, fine half-round needle rasps, and abrasive horsehair buffers.
    • A hardened steel scrimshaw graver and an ultra-fine burnishing point.
    • Wire-looping pliers, copper snips, and a bone-handled bodkin.
    • Lapidary polishing rouge, wet-and-dry quartz scouring powder, and a soft deer-hide buffing pad.
    • A shallow soapstone dish and small copper embers-spoon for burning smudge.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Trained Skill Level 4 or higher in Bonecraft / Scrimshaw Carving, Lapidary Work, or Shamanic Artifice.
    • Working knowledge of noaidi spirit-binding, animist domestic law joiks, and ancestor-memory consecration.
    • Proficiency in precision lens-seating, cold-wire tension lacing, and organic lacquer sealing.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1: Preparing and Shaping the Fox-Bone Housing
      • Take the cleaned mountain fox eye-socket plate and rasp away rough exterior spurs, working the inner and outer circumferences into a smooth, circular lens bezel with a tapered bottom tang.
      • Use abrasive horsehair and quartz scouring powder to buff the bone to an ivory finish, ensuring the interior bezel lip is uniform and unmarred to hold the stone securely.
    • Step 2: Scrimshawing the Forensic Runes and Darkening
      • Using a hardened steel graver, etch the traditional noaidi glyphs around the face of the bone frame: the discerning pupil at the apex, the unraveling knot along the flanks, and the balanced scales of the domestic hearth along the lower curve.
      • Rub fresh, dry chimney soot into the freshly cut channels, wiping away the surface excess with an oiled cloth to leave stark, permanent black lines etched deep into the white bone.
    • Step 3: Fitting and Seating the Quartz Disc
      • Test-fit the polished pale-indigo ice-quartz disc within the bone bezel, ensuring it rests flush against the rear inner rim without rocking.
      • Warm the clarified spruce resin and iron-pyrite cement until it becomes viscous, applying a thread-thin bead along the internal seat.
      • Press the quartz disc into the frame, allowing the pitch to set firmly in a cool draft; polish the stone faces clean with a deer-hide pad and lapidary rouge to remove all traces of adhesive.
    • Step 4: Assembling and Wrapping the Handle
      • Seat the carved tang of the bone housing against the notched end of the seasoned willow root spindle.
      • Anchor the annealed copper wire at the base of the bone, wrapping it under tight tension down the entire length of the wood core in a tight, double-spiral pattern to bond the handle and socket into a rigid, singular piece.
      • Terminate the wire at the handle’s butt into a sturdy, soldered suspension loop; thread the braided caribou-leather neck cord through the loop, securing it with a double fisherman’s knot.
    • Step 5: Consecration and Ancestral Truth-Binding
      • Place the completed loupe across a shallow soapstone dish filled with fresh hearth soot, positioned near an active domestic cooking hearth at sundown.
      • Kindle the dry mountain thyme, juniper needles, and fox hair on the embers-spoon, allowing the pungent smoke to envelop the lens.
      • Chant an ancestral noaidi joik of hearth-justice and clear-sightedness for twenty uninterrupted minutes, repeatedly blowing the sacred smoke across the quartz until the smoky-indigo inclusions swirl into a temporary violet spiral, finalizing the bond with the watchful spirits of the clan.

Bone-Circle of Quick-Eyed Fox Which Made Dark-Liar Spill His Marrow Before Stone of Hearth

In the turn of the seasons before the big ice became small water, when the sky of Saṃsāra had only two winds that were brothers and always quarreling over a dead hawk, there was an enclosure of four-and-twenty skin-houses upon the slope of the Red Willow. In this place the people lived by drying the tongues of river-beasts and scraping the wool of mountain-goats with pieces of curved slate.

The keeper of the law-stick among these people was an old woman named Sigga of the Short Shins. She had seen seventy-two meltings of the moss, and because her two eyes had been cooked white by the smoke of peat fires through seventy-two winters, she could not tell a yearling deer from a dead stump unless she laid her hand upon the horn. Her grandsons laughed into their sleeves and said: “Sigga seeth only what happened in the days of our grandfathers, but if a wolf should take the fat bacon from between her ankles, she would say it was only the gray dog of the wind playing with a dry grass.”

Now in the house that sat nearest the water-weir lived a man of crooked heart whose name was Torstein the Thick-Necked. He was a maker of cedar-bark ropes, but his hands were soft because he preferred to sit in the shadow of the turf-wall and watch where the other hunters hung their grease-bladders to dry.

In the middle of the Great Night, when the sun had hidden her face beneath the permafrost for forty sleeps, the hunters of the Red Willow went out upon the hard crust to pursue a great bear whose ears were white like river-frost. In the village remained only the women with children at the breast, the old men whose hips were dry like dead twigs, and Torstein the Thick-Necked, who had tied a strip of dirty buckskin around his heel and cried out that his bone was cracked by a sliding boulder.

While the men were two valleys away, the great iron kettle of the clan was emptied of its treasure. In that kettle, which had been dragged over the mountains three hundred years before by the first mother, lay the Silver Hearth-Tongue: a piece of virgin river-silver as long as a boy’s forearm, beaten into the likeness of a fat caribou with twelve tines of river-pearl. It was the heart of the enclosure. If the Silver Tongue were cold, the deer would not come to the moss-valleys, the fish would dive beneath the iron mud, and the clan would be forced to eat their own snowshoes before the star of the goose arose.

When the old women went to put boiled tallow into the pot at dawn, the kettle was as hollow as a dead bird’s egg. There was only a handful of cold sand at the bottom and a smell like the grease of a dog.

The clan began to scream with the voice of gulls whose eggs are broken by an otter. The young men, returning with the meat of the white-eared bear, threw their spears into the turf and looked with red eyes upon one another. Brother looked upon brother; the hunter of the upper ditch said: “It is the hunter of the lower ditch, for he hath three wives and only two sacks of dried peas.” The maker of fish-traps said: “It is the boy who carves bone spoons, for yesterday he looked upon my silver buckle with a water-mouth.”

Swords of soft copper were pulled from scabbards of seal-pelt. Two youths had already seized a boy by his hair to cast him into the black water of the weir, when Sigga of the Short Shins came crawling through the door-hole of her turf-house upon her hands and her two knees.

“Cease to cut the throat of the sky with your foolish iron,” croaked the blind woman. “A fool searcheth for the footprint of the hare with an iron club, and thereby crusheth the berry-bush so that neither foot nor hare is ever found again.”

In her left hand Sigga carried a thing that made the young men spit upon the ground. It was only the circular eye-hole bone of a mountain fox which her grandfather’s grandfather had found dead inside a hollow birch tree, scraped smooth with river-grit and holding in its belly a round disc of clear ice-quartz that had pale, purplish threads running through it like the veins in the belly of an adder. Around the short stick of willow root, old copper wire had been wound so many times that the grease of eighty hands had turned it as green as moss.

“Is the mother going to boil that dry bone for our dinner?” laughed Torstein the Thick-Necked, leaning upon his stick with his wrapped foot held high. “The silver is five miles down the river-ice inside the sledge of the southern raiders. If we do not run upon our fast snowshoes, the thieves will be eating broth from our caribou-horn before the moon drops behind the pine trees.”

Sigga did not look at Torstein, for her two eyes were as pale as boiled fish-eyes. She sat herself down upon the ash-bed of the central hearth, where the communal fire was dying down to red knuckles of birch-charcoal.

She dipped her dry fingers into the hearth-soot. She took a pinch of the black dust and blew it across the round face of the quartz disc, while singing the ancient luohti of the fox—the joik which the female fox sings when she runneth across the sliding crust of the snow to find where the field-mouse hath dropped three bilberry seeds beneath six cubits of drift.

A sound came out of the bone circle like the sigh of an old chimney when the storm begins to turn around the ridge.

The purplish threads within the ice-stone began to turn like two worms dancing in a puddle of water. A beam of light, the color of a bruised plum or the skin of a winter cloud at twilight, shot out from the eye-hole of the fox and struck the floor of the long-lodge.

Sigga did not lift the lens to her blind face; she held it outward by its copper-bound tail, pointing it along the earth as a hunter pointeth a spear.

“Behold,” whispered the old woman, “the dust hath a tongue, and the stone hath not forgotten whose foot was heavy with theft.”

The young men fell back against the turf-posts, their copper swords hanging limp in their fists. Where the purple light of the stone touched the floor-mats of beaten reed, there appeared footprints. They were not footprints of mud, nor were they marks of blood; they were tracks of burning violet frost, smoking with a pale vapor that smelled of burned grease and dry feathers.

The tracks did not go toward the south river where the raiders walked. They rose up from the skin-flap of Torstein’s bedding-place; they crept on the soft belly across the mats to the side of the great iron kettle. There, the purple light revealed two glowing knee-marks, showing where a man had knelt down in the dark to fish the caribou of river-silver from the tallow-pot with two greasy thumbs.

“The spirits of the house are drunk with bad smoke!” shouted Torstein the Thick-Necked, his face becoming as white as a peeled birch-pole. “A dead fox knoweth nothing of silver! Some dog hath walked upon the mats with fish-slime on its paws!”

Sigga turned the bone-circle until the violet beam struck the chest of Torstein.

When the light touched the thick wool of his reindeer-tunic, the quartz disc within the bone gave a sharp, dry report like the cracking of an egg-shell in the frost. The copper wire around the willow handle grew so hot that it scorched the dry palm of the blind crone, but she did not drop the horn.

Upon the left side of Torstein’s breast, through the thick pelt of the caribou, the light revealed a burning violet silhouette: the shape of the silver deer with its twelve tines of river-pearl, glowing through the leather, through the fur, and through the woolen shirt like a red ember shining through a wicker basket. The weight of his own guilt and the terror of his heart had caused the spirit in the stone to draw the shape of the stolen thing upon his very meat.

Moreover, the lens showed what the eye of man could not see: beneath the band of dirty buckskin upon his heel, there was no crack in the bone, but only a small leather pouch containing three shaved flakes of virgin silver which he had scraped from the hoof of the beast with his fish-knife before hiding the body under his sleeping-straw.

Torstein fell upon his two thick knees. His tongue became as dry as a dried salt-fish; he struck his forehead against the floor-stones until the red water ran into his eyebrows, screaming: “Take the eye of the fox away from my liver! It is hot like the kettle of the sun! It knoweth where the meat was buried!”

The young men went to the corner of Torstein’s house. Beneath three cubits of rotten dog-straw and four flat stones of the river, they found the Silver Hearth-Tongue, wrapped in an old oily greasy apron, unhurt save for the three scrapes upon its left hoof.

They took Torstein the Thick-Necked and tied his two hands behind his buttocks with his own bark rope, casting him out of the enclosure into the wilderness of the Screaming Willow to live upon the bark of the dwarf-birch and the droppings of the snow-grouse until the melting of the ice.

When the sun finally lifted her yellow eyebrow above the rim of the earth, the people brought to Sigga of the Short Shins seven bowls of marrow-fat and three collars of black fox-pelt, saying: “Keep the bone-circle upon thy breast, Grandmother, and be the Watcher of the Threshold, so that no man among us may think that the night is thick enough to hide the work of a crooked finger.”

Sigga did not take the fox-pelts, but only one small horn spoon of warm marrow to grease her dry knuckles. She hung the loupe around her neck by its greasy caribou-thong, tucked it into the bosom of her sheepskin tunic where it lay cold against her old ribs, and said: “The bone is only a window through which the dead grandmothers look back into the lodge; and though a thief may wash the tallow from his fingers with mountain-water, he cannot wash the trail of his own shadow from the soot upon the floor.”

Moral of the Story: He who committeth a small theft in the dark imagineth that the house sleepeth because the old dog hath lost its teeth; yet let the transgressor beware, for every stone of the hearth keepeth the memory of his tread, and though the judge be as blind as the winter ice, the spirit that dwelleth within an honest bone will cause his very marrow to glow with the light of his own transgression.
