Myth 72 of the Watched Seam

Lore:

  • Across dockyards, cider valleys, and dry frontiers, coopers and cellar-masters hold fast to an ancient superstition: “Wood remembers the tree until the hoop forgets the iron, but a vessel watched with an honest eye will neither leak its belly nor admit the rot.” The belief holds that a barrel, tub, or cask is not merely bent timber, but an agreement between split wood and tightened iron to hold the world outside at bay. If a barrel-maker drives their hoops with total conviction that the vessel is sealed against the void, no vinegar will spoil the mash, no salt-spray will foul the flour, and no pressure can burst the staves. The origin is attributed to Master Brand of the Great Wharf, who hooped nine casks of river wine during the Great Quake; while the warehouse collapsed and every stone cistern cracked, his nine barrels rolled through fire and masonry without weeping a single red drop. Because myth magic answers collective superstitious certainty, an avatar who embraces the craft conviction of the cooper can turn wood into an airtight bulwark, reinforce worn structures, and seal provisions against ruin.

Description:

  • This practical tradesman’s implement is a stout, heavy cooper’s driver forged from dark, oil-quenched bog iron, showing the flat, scarred peen of a tool that has struck thousands of hoop-pins. The curved, stepped striking head is designed to bite cleanly against iron barrel bands without slipping. Its short, squared grip is carved from seasoned white oak, bound tightly in tarred hemp line and notched with measurement indices for standard barrel-pitch and stave thickness. Set flush into the flat pommel cap at the base of the handle is a coin-sized, banded brown-and-gray agate crystal with concentric rings that mirror the growth rings of old timber and the nested arcs of iron hoops. The tool carries a faint, enduring scent of wood shavings, pine pitch, and fermented beer.

Stats:

  • Tier: 1
  • Rarity: Common
  • Item Hit Points: 30 (Avatar Base plus Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
  • Resilience: 10
  • Armor Check (AC): 1 (Adding directly to the avatar’s Defense score, within the maximum limit of 3 per item tier)
  • Suggested Market Value: 105 silver coins (Subject to local timber access, cooperage demand, and merchant haggling)
  • Weight: 1.5 pounds (Worn at the belt or held in one hand)

Passives:

  • Eye of the Trued Stave: While the driver is carried at the belt or held in hand, the avatar gains a +1 competence bonus on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to evaluate the structural integrity of wooden construction, detect dry rot or hidden hollows in walls, spot structural weak points in doors and barricades, and inspect wooden containers for leaks or tampering.
  • Watched Preservation: Any wooden container (barrel, keg, crate, or chest) whose hoops or joints have been tapped and trued by this driver becomes completely airtight and watertight; liquids and dry goods stored within are insulated against natural leakage, vinegar souring, damp rot, and insect infestation for 30 days.

Actives:

  • Hoop-Bite Ward: Once per short rest, as an action, the avatar taps the driver’s iron head against a wooden door, hatch, barricade, or container while focusing on the myth of Master Brand. For 10 minutes, the targeted wooden object and its immediate fittings gain +2 Resilience and 10 temporary Hit Points as the grain tightens like hoop-bound heartwood. During this time, any physical check made by enemies to force, break, or pry open the barrier suffers disadvantage or an increased difficulty threshold.
  • Ring the Iron Chime: Once per day (1/long rest), the avatar strikes the driver against an iron hoop or a solid wooden stave with three rhythmic, echoing taps. A resonant, low-frequency hum vibrates outward in a 20-foot radius for 5 minutes. Wooden barriers and structures within the area knit their stress fractures, sealing gaps against creeping toxic gas, mundane drafts, and trickling water. Additionally, hostile creatures inside the radius that rely on stealth or hidden compartments within wooden architecture are revealed, as the wood gives off a telltale, dry creak under their weight.

Commerce and Acquisition of Myth 72 of the Watched Seam

  • Cooperages, Shipwright Yards, and Waterfront Drydocks:
    • Found along bustling river quays, sea anchorages, and canal basins, these loud, timber-strewn workshops build and repair the casks, hogsheads, and water-butts essential to maritime shipping.
    • In these yards, the driver is revered as an irreplaceable master-tool that prevents bilge water from fouling dry flour and guarantees that drinking-water casks do not weep into the salt brine during six-month voyages.
    • An unaffiliated avatar purchasing the tool directly from an elderly master cooper or ship’s carpenter pays the baseline retail cost of 105 silver coins (or 10 gold and 5 silver coins).
    • Avatars carrying recognized guild credentials with relevant trades—such as the Shipwrights’ Guild, the Cellarers’ Syndicate, or the Timber-Crafters’ Union—receive the customary faction price adjustment of 10% multiplied by their tier level. For a tier 1 avatar, this 10% discount reduces the price to 94 silver and 5 copper coins (standardized in ledger settlements as 95 silver coins).
    • Authorized transactions within city guildhalls are verified through the Mind’s Eye and balanced across the World Bank ledger with the mandatory 1% transaction fee.
    • Selling the implement back to a practicing master-tradesman yields the standard tier-adjusted resale value: base value minus 10% multiplied by the avatar’s tier level. A tier 1 avatar receives 94 to 95 silver coins, provided the bog-iron head is free of severe edge-fractures, the oak haft’s hemp wrapping is unfrayed, and the banded agate pommel stone maintains its full 30 hit points.
  • Brewery Cellars, Vineyard Presses, and Distillers’ Exchanges:
    • Clustered around rich cider valleys, highland distilleries, and subterranean ale vaults, these commercial hubs depend entirely on oak aging casks that can hold pressurized alcohol without failing.
    • Master brewers and cellar-vintners eagerly seek out the driver to inspect aged oak vats for hidden dry-rot, ensuring catastrophic pressure leaks never drain an entire vintage into the cellar muck.
    • Because a single failed vat can bankrupt a family winery, cellarmen place a high premium on authentic tools bearing Master Brand’s hallmarks, retailing them through trade guilds for 120 to 135 silver coins (or 12 to 13 gold and 5 silver coins).
    • A cellar-warden or vintner’s factor looking to purchase the tool from an itinerant cooper will offer a solid 100 to 110 silver coins, knowing it can immediately pay for itself by salvaging leaky vintage casks.
  • Caravan Staging Yards, Teamster Depots, and Overland Freight Posts:
    • Positioned at the gates of desert trade routes, highland wagon passes, and frontier supply staging yards, these rough depots outfit heavy prairie wagons and pack trains with dry provisions.
    • Teamsters and freight masters prize the driver for sealing grain barrels and salt-pork casks against grit, rainstorms, and dust-beetles while jolting across miles of unpaved wilderness roads.
    • Transactions here run in ready coin, wagon timber, or promissory freight credits; sutlers and freight outfitters regularly demand 115 to 130 silver coins for an authentic tool.
    • A traveler wishing to sell the driver to an outfitter at an overland depot can expect an immediate cash payout of 85 to 95 silver coins, though an overland caravan master facing an unseasonable rainy-season crossing will readily pay up to 110 silver coins on the spot.
  • Frontier Logging Camps, Sawmill Settlements, and Backwoods Trading Shacks:
    • Hidden along remote mountain river valleys, deep timber felling operations, and pioneer stockades, trade is driven by raw commodities, fresh timber balks, and subsistence supplies.
    • A frontier camp foreman, bridge-builder, or pioneer elder who recognizes the concentric-ring agate and understands the myth of Master Brand will trade up to 125 silver coins’ worth of seasoned white oak timbers, beaver pelts, or cured smoked meats to secure a tool that keeps frontier granaries airtight.
    • In contrast, an ignorant rural timber-boss who sees only a dull, notched iron punch will treat the driver as common scrap timber gear. In such backwater outposts, an opportunistic buyer can snap up the tool for a bargain of 30 to 45 silver coins, while a seller attempting to trade it for road supplies will receive lowball offers of merely 15 to 20 silver coins from traders who do not grasp its mythic value.

Roleplay Applications of Myth 72 of the Watched Seam Across Diverse Environments

  • Dockside Warehouses, Bilge Holds, and Flooding Vessels:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Trapped in the lower hold of a scuttled cutter or a storm-battered merchant cog taking on heavy seawater, the avatar spots split bulkheads and popped floor staves using Eye of the Trued Stave. Slapping the driver against the breached timbers to activate Hoop-Bite Ward, the avatar causes the waterlogged oak to swell and bind tight against its iron ribs, turning a failing hull plate into an iron-hard bulkhead that halts the deluge long enough for the crew to man the bilge pumps. The driver’s passive +1 Armor Check simultaneously turns aside falling ballast stones, swinging cargo hooks, and wet tackle during the scramble.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Cornered in a narrow dockside warehouse by port cutthroats or corrupt harbor guards, the avatar strikes a massive rack of tiered rum hogsheads with Ring the Iron Chime. The resonant thrum vibrates through the wooden cradles, allowing the avatar to read the exact stress points of the wooden bracing. With a single targeted hammer strike on the trued keystone wedge, the avatar intentionally collapses the timber staging outward, sending thousands of pounds of rolling oak barrels crashing down the ramp into the pursuing enforcers to crush their shields and scatter their lines.
  • Besieged Gatehouses, Sapped Palisading, and Stockades:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Manning an outer wooden redoubt during an assault where sappers are battering through timber gates with iron-shod rams, the avatar presses the driver against the splintering oak crossbar and invokes Hoop-Bite Ward. The +2 Resilience and 10 temporary Hit Points cause the shattered fibers to interlock like living heartwood; the wood refuses to yield, blunting the ram’s iron nose and jarring the arms of the sappers beneath boiling pitch. The avatar’s +1 Armor Check helps deflect incoming crossbow bolts and splinter sprays thrown off by the impact.
    • Offensive Roleplay: To dislodge enemy infiltrators who have slipped into the gatehouse rafters or barricaded themselves behind heavy oak doors, the avatar initiates Ring the Iron Chime. The low-frequency vibration travels through every beam, plank, and lintel; hidden marksmen crouching above are forced out of stealth as the timber groans and snaps dryly beneath their boots, pinpointing their exact positions for friendly archers before the avatar smashes through the door’s weak points identified via Eye of the Trued Stave.
  • Subterranean Mine Shafts, Timbered Crypts, and Dungeon Vaults:
    • Defensive Roleplay: When a seismic tremor, cave-in, or explosive blast compromises the timber shoring of a deep tunnel, the avatar quickly assesses the fracturing uprights with Eye of the Trued Stave. Tapping the most strained oak strut while invoking Hoop-Bite Ward reinforces the timber framework against the crushing weight of falling shale, preventing a total roof collapse and shielding allies from lethal cave-in trauma.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Facing subterranean ambushers hiding behind false wooden partition walls, sealed sarcophagus lids, or hidden drop-doors, the avatar delivers three rhythmic strikes against a mine-cart frame to trigger Ring the Iron Chime. The echoing pulse seals micro-fractures in the wood to trap toxic dungeon spores and stagnant damp air away from the party, while the wood under the stalkers’ feet emits sharp, cracking resonances that betray their flanking route through the hollow timber corridors.
  • Fortified Frontier Granaries, Supply Wagons, and Caravan Camps:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Defending a baggage train encircled by raiders in dry scrubland, the avatar sets the perimeter by circling the supply wagons tongue-to-axle. By running along the perimeter and tapping each oak hub and wagon gate with the driver, the avatar ensures that the wagons function as an unbroken, airtight redoubt. Fire arrows fail to catch in the tightly bound staves, and Watched Preservation guarantees that the flour, grain, and salted rations inside remain completely undamaged by ambient grit, moisture, or insect swarms while the siege drags on.
    • Offensive Roleplay: When dealing with bandits who have taken cover inside a wooden roadside stockade or locked granary, the avatar approaches the rear wall and reads its load-bearing staves. By delivering a concentrated strike to the primary tension hoop, the avatar breaks the timber’s agreement with the iron; the release of pressure shatters the staves with the explosive force of a sprung cask, blowing an immediate breach into the enemy’s fortified position and stunning the defenders sheltered inside.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight:
    • The banded brown-and-gray agate cabochon set in the pommel stone glows with a warm, steady amber ring of light, projecting concentric ripples that resemble the growth rings of an ancient oak tree.
    • Thin, luminous arcs of golden force trace along the iron driver’s edges, spiraling out and latching onto nearby wooden surfaces, seams, and iron hoops, illuminating hairline fractures with bright capillary veins of light as the wood fibers compress and knit shut.
    • Looking through the Mind’s Eye, structural tension appears as colored gradients: sound, load-bearing wood pulses with a cool, stable green hue, while dry-rot, stress cracks, and concealed hollow spaces flash with an urgent, dull orange warning aura.
  • Sound:
    • When the driver makes contact, the user hears the deep, metallic chime of a massive iron bell struck underwater, followed by an unmistakable, satisfying sound of seasoned oak planks groaning, expanding, and snapping tightly into alignment under immense hoop-tension.
    • Ambient creaks, drafty winds, and background clatter soften, replaced by a rhythmic, low-frequency hum that resonates harmoniously with the heartbeat of the user.
  • Smell:
    • A sharp, grounding wave of shaved white oak, hot pine pitch, linseed oil, and dark river-marsh iron immediately clears the nostrils, cutting through stale cellar air, mold, and stagnant damp.
  • Taste:
    • The user perceives a dry, pleasant taste of toasted wood tannins and rich malted mash across the tongue, leaving the mouth feeling cleansed of sour air, rot, or bitter dust.
  • Touch:
    • A powerful, steadying vibration rushes through the tarred hemp grip and into the bones of the user’s hand and wrist, imparting an immediate sensation of immovable weight, anchored balance, and leverage.
    • The air around the user’s skin tightens and drops in humidity, feeling crisp, dry, and shielded from drafts and damp spray.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Structural Empathy: The avatar psychically feels the strain of every joint, nail, dowel, and timber within a 20-foot radius, instantly identifying exactly where the wood is ready to shear and how much weight it can bear before failure.
    • Seam-Sense: The avatar instinctively knows whether any closed container within range is truly airtight, sensing trapped air, stored dry goods, or spoiled liquids as distinct physical densities inside the mind.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight:
    • Observers see concentric ripples of soft golden-amber light flare outward from the driver’s pommel and striking head whenever it strikes a target.
    • Splintered floorboards, cracked doorframes, or weeping barrel staves seem to visibly flex, swell, and draw tightly against one another, their fissures closing as if forced into place by an invisible, tightening hoop of iron.
    • The user appears grounded and implacable, standing with the unhurried, heavy authority of a master shipwright or fort-builder.
  • Sound:
    • Nearby witnesses hear three ringing, anvil-like strikes followed by a strange, musical resonance that hums through the floor timbers, causing walls and woodwork to give off a single, definitive clack of settling joinery.
  • Smell:
    • Those within twenty feet catch a sudden, pungent draft of fresh cedar chips, tarred hemp cord, and boiling rosin, masking unpleasant local odors.
  • Taste:
    • Involuntary dryness touches the lips, accompanied by a faint, phantom hint of smoked barrel char and cider vinegar on the back of the palate.
  • Touch:
    • Observers feel a distinct tremor run through the floorboards beneath their boots, followed by an immediate sense of structural solidity, as drafts cease blowing under doors and damp chills recede from timber walls.

Positives

  • Grants a reliable, passive +1 Armor Check directly to the avatar’s Defense score without taking up an armor or shield slot.
  • Eye of the Trued Stave provides consistent bonuses to Perception and Investigation for detecting hidden compartments, weak walls, dry rot, structural instability, and container tampering.
  • Watched Preservation protects stored provisions, wines, and dry goods against spoilage, rot, insect pests, and leakage for 30 full days without needing magical maintenance.
  • Hoop-Bite Ward reinforces doors, barricades, and chests with +2 Resilience and 10 temporary Hit Points, making it extraordinarily difficult for enemies to breach timber defenses.
  • Ring the Iron Chime seals rooms against drafts and creeping toxic gases while actively unmasking stealthy foes hidden in or moving across wooden construction.

Negatives

  • The distinct, echoing metallic chime and vibrant amber ripples make stealth impossible during activation, clearly telegraphing the avatar’s location to anyone within hearing range.
  • Ring the Iron Chime’s acoustic vibration causes all loose wood in the area to creak and groan, which can alert non-hidden guards or sentries stationed on adjoining floors.
  • The protective features and reinforcement magics apply strictly to wooden, timber, and hoop-bound architecture; they offer no benefit against stone, solid metal, earth, or unworked living trees.
  • The +1 Armor Check absorbs physical, kinetic, and bludgeoning strikes, but provides zero mitigation against elemental, fire, acid, or magical damage types.

Crafting Recipe: Myth 72 of the Watched Seam

Materials Needed

  • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal: a coin-sized, banded brown-and-gray agate cabochon showing distinct concentric rings resembling timber growth rings and iron hoops.
  • Sixteen ounces of dense bog iron (or low-phosphorus swamp ore billet) for forging the driver head.
  • One piece of seasoned white oak heartwood (straight-grained, cured for at least two winters, measuring 1.5 inches square by 8 inches long) for the handle.
  • Three yards of dry, three-strand hemp twine.
  • Two ounces of hot pine tar (boiled with a knuckle of beeswax for waterproofing and grip tack).
  • One iron hoop-rivet or forged steel pin for pinning the tang.
  • One dram of linseed oil and fine powdered charcoal for treating the wood and iron finish.

Tools Required

  • A coal or charcoal blacksmithing forge with hand or foot bellows.
  • A heavy steel anvil with a defined horn and hardy hole.
  • Blacksmithing tongs, a 2.5-pound cross-peen forging hammer, and a smooth planishing hammer.
  • Hot and cold chisels (for cutting hoop grooves, beveling steps, and index notching).
  • A drawknife, spoke-shave, and wood rasps for shaping the oak haft.
  • An auger or hand-drill (matching the iron tang and rivet diameter).
  • A brass-faced setting punch and burnisher for setting the pommel stone.
  • An arcane focus or copper hoop-gauge for channeling and stabilizing the mythic matrix.

Skill Requirements

  • Blacksmithing and Forging: Skill Level 4 or higher to shape the stepped, curved bog-iron driver head, draw the mounting tang, and oil-quench the iron without warping or brittle-fracture.
  • Carpentry and Woodworking: Skill Level 3 or higher to split, dress, and shape the seasoned white oak handle along the natural grain line and mortise the pommel bezel.
  • Magical Crafting: Skill Level 5 or higher to bind the folk superstition of Master Brand into the concentric agate crystal and align its resonant frequency with structural integrity.

Crafting Steps

  • Forging the Driver Head: Heat the bog iron billet to bright orange heat in the forge. Draw down the striking body, upsetting the steel to create a broad, reinforced striking peen. Chisel-cut the signature stepped lip on the working face so it will seat securely over curved iron hoops without slipping. Forge an integral 3-inch rectangular tang extending from the rear of the head.
  • Quenching and Tempering: Reheat the forged head to cherry red and quench it in used tallow or heavy vegetable oil to give the bog iron toughness and corrosion resistance. Polish the working edge and draw the temper over the forge coals to a dark straw hue, ensuring the striking face will not mushroom or shatter under heavy hammer blows.
  • Shaping the Oak Haft: Using the drawknife and spoke-shave, carve the seasoned white oak blank into a comfortable, square-section handle with rounded corners, following the straight grain to maximize shock resistance. Drill a centered channel through the upper end to receive the iron tang, followed by a crosswise hole for the anchoring rivet.
  • Indexing the Measurement Notches: Using a fine cold-chisel and straightedge, carve precise measurement grooves along the lower face of the oak haft to mark standard barrel-stave thickness and hoop-spacing intervals. Rub the notches with powdered charcoal and hot linseed oil to make the indices distinct and protect the bare grain.
  • Haft Assembly and Pommel Bezel: Fit the iron head’s tang firmly into the oak handle, seating it with hot pine resin, and drive the steel cross-pin through the pre-drilled rivet hole, peening both ends flush. At the base of the handle, carve a round, recessed socket and fit a forged iron bezel collar to house the pommel stone.
  • Tarred Cord Wrapping: Coat the upper half of the oak grip with hot pine tar and beeswax. Wrap the three-strand hemp twine tightly around the wood in close, overlapping coils to provide a non-slip, shock-absorbing grip, securing the ends beneath the final wraps with a timber hitch.
  • Setting the Banded Agate: Place the banded brown-and-gray agate into the pommel collar, making sure the concentric rings sit parallel to the driver’s striking head. Using the brass setting punch and light mallet taps, crimp the iron collar inward over the stone’s beveled edges until the gem is seated firmly without play or rattle.
  • Cognitive Attunement and Hoop-Soul Infusion: Place the finished driver across an empty, seasoned oak cask bound with three iron hoops. Rest your arcane focus against the agate and rap the driver three times against the bilge hoop while holding absolute, unwavering conviction that wood and iron bound in craft will never burst, buckle, or weep. As the resonant chime sounds, channel your intent until the concentric bands of the agate ignite with a warm amber glow, permanently locking in the item’s +1 Armor Check, 30 hit points, and hoop-binding enchantments.

Brand Who Smote Hoops Before Mountain Vomited

In the elder dry years, before the river had bitten its path through the red mud, the great water-wharf of the city of Oor-Khar stood upon three hundred logs of peeled cedar. There dwelt a man of the mallet whose sign was a split log and three bent iron wires. His name upon the salt-tablets is written Brand-Who-Does-Not-Allow-the-Juice-to-Run, but the fishermen of the mud-flats called him simply Old Iron-Thumb. He was not a lord of chariots, nor did he put yellow gold in his ears to make the market-women look upon his chin. He possessed only a small leather shirt stiffened with the blood of oxen, sixteen curved knives for shaving stave-bellies, and a driver of heavy bog-iron fitted with a square stick of white mountain-oak. At the bottom of this stick sat an eye-stone of brown and gray stripes, like the belly of a river-snail or the wood-rings of an old pine that has seen three kings turn to bone.

The second bark-leaf says that the great king of that season was named Sargon-of-the-Nine-Ditches. This king had dug twelve thousand pits into the hills to draw out the dark purple blood of the sweet mountain vine. He caused forty thousand earthenware pots to be baked in the kilns, each pot large enough to hide a fat spearman, and he filled them with the heavy wine of the south till the clay bellies sweat like frightened horses. But Master Brand sat upon his three-legged bench beneath the wharf and shook his white head until his beard-hair fell into his leather apron.

Brand said to the king’s tax-counter, whose name was Bel-Nabu-the-Ink-Licker: The earth is a restless cow that shakes off the flies. Clay is only baked dirt; it remembers the ditch from which it was dug, and when the earth groans, clay runs back into dust like dry wheat. You should bind your wine in split oak and hoops of swamp-iron, for the hoop loves the wood, and the wood holds the blood of the earth without screaming.

Bel-Nabu spat upon Brand’s oak shavings and made the sound of a goose with a dry throat: You miserable wood-scraper who smells of pitch and tallow! Does the king’s wine need the bark of trees to keep its sweet breath? Our pots were hardened in the royal fires of the nine brick-ovens. They are sealed with bitumen from the black pits of the great plain. Your wooden tubs are only fit for the salty cabbage of ditch-diggers.

The translation here is very torn by water-bugs, but the characters show that Master Brand did not cast stones at the king’s servant. He turned his broad rear toward the palace and spat three times between his knees. He took nine casks of white mountain-oak that had cured through seven autumn frosts. Each cask he built with thirty-two staves, split with the grain so that no wood-pore looked outward toward the wind. Over each barrel he slipped six hoops of cold-hammered bog-iron. Then he took his driving-iron with the banded snail-stone in its pommel.

He did not call upon the nine bull-headed gods of the high clouds. He did not burn the kidney-fat of young sheep upon the stones. He held fast to the old craft-truth that a hoop driven with an honest strike makes the wood forget that it was ever cut down by the axe. He struck the driver against the iron bands—KLANG-TONG, KLANG-TONG—turning the casks upon their bellies until the iron bit the white oak like the jaws of hungry hunting-dogs. The banded agate in the driver’s base began to sweat a golden oil that smelled of mountain pine and river-silt, and the wood tightened until not even a ghost could have pushed a hair between the staves. Into these nine casks Brand poured three thousand measures of heavy purple wine, drove the oak bungs home, and wrapped his tools in his greased ox-hide.

On the night when the third moon became thin like the fingernail of a dead girl, the mountain of the south split its ribs. The earth-belly groaned with a sound like ten thousand bronze shields beaten together by demons. The three hundred peeled cedar logs under the great wharf danced like reeds in a whirlpool. The ground opened its dry mouth and vomited black water, boiling sulfur, and red river-gravel.

The great royal storehouses of Sargon-of-the-Nine-Ditches collapsed into the mud with the noise of falling mountains. The forty thousand earthenware jars, baked in the nine royal brick-ovens, shattered against one another like bird-eggs dropped from a high tower. The sweet purple wine of the king ran in great rivers down the streets; it filled the drainage ditches; it drowned forty dogs and three tax-collectors who were sleeping in the cellar-ways. The city smelled of smashed grapes, broken brick-dust, and the sour vinegar of ruin. The wealth of nine harvest-years was swallowed by the red earth in the time it takes a man to roast an onion.

When the sun rose out of the dust, the king came walking in his torn mantle, weeping like a cow that has dropped her calf into a dry well. Bel-Nabu-the-Ink-Licker followed him, tearing his linen skirt and pouring black ashes over his ears. All the stone jars were shards; all the brick vaults were flat piles of rubbish.

Then the king looked down into the muddy ditch where the wharf had fallen into the salt-water.

There stood Master Brand-Who-Does-Not-Allow-the-Juice-to-Run. His leather shirt was covered in dried river-ooze and stone-dust, but his bog-iron driver was resting upon his shoulder like a commander’s staff. Around his boots lay the shattered masonry of the wharf’s foundation wall. Yet in the midst of the broken stone and the burning roof-timbers sat the nine oak casks. They had tumbled down eighty cubits of stone steps; they had been battered by the falling cedar beams; great blocks of granite had struck their iron hoops. But the staves held fast to the iron, and the iron held fast to the staves. The nine casks stood upon their chimes, round and unbroken, without leaking a single red drop of wine into the ditch.

The king fell upon his knees in the mud before the wooden barrels and cried out: O master of the split stick! What secret spell of the deep water did you whisper into these tubs, that the mountain could crack the bones of our stone temples but could not break the bellies of your nine barrels?

Master Brand took his driving-tool from his shoulder. He did not bow his white head to the king’s crown. He rapped the banded agate against the head of the foremost cask—TOCK—and the sound was as dry and solid as the heart of a mountain.

There is no spell in my pocket, you blind king of broken clay, the old cooper said, wiping the stone-dust from his iron-peen with a greasy thumb. Clay is proud and brittle; it hardens in the fire and boasts that it will last forever, yet it shatters at the first tremor of the earth beneath it. But the oak has bent before the storm-winds while it lived in the mountain, and when honest iron clasps honest wood with a true-driven hoop, they make a covenant against the void. The stone may crumble and the clay pot may weep its belly dry, but a vessel that is watched with a craftsman’s eye will hold its treasure through the falling of the world.

The king offered Master Brand ninety talents of red copper and a house of cedar with twelve silver doors. But the old cooper picked up his basket of shaving-knives, tucked his heavy driver into his hempen belt, and walked down the river-mud toward the fishing-boats, searching for seasoned oak that had known the north wind.

The Moral of the Story: The proud structures of kings, baked in vanity and sealed with brittle clay, turn to dust when the foundations of the world are shaken; but that which is shaped by patient labor, bound by the unyielding hoop of discipline, and guarded with an honest eye will endure the collapsing of walls and the wrath of mountains without losing a single measure of the truth committed to its keeping.

Driver of the Watched Seam

  • Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)
  • Item Category: Wondrous Item / Tool (Held or Belt)
  • Armor Class Bonus: While holding this driver or wearing it openly at your belt, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class against physical bludgeoning and kinetic attacks.
  • Eye of the Trued Stave: You gain a +1 bonus on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to assess the structural integrity of wooden construction, detect dry rot, locate concealed doors or compartments in wooden surfaces, and spot structural weak points in doors or barricades.
  • Watched Preservation: Any wooden container (such as a barrel, cask, chest, or crate) whose fittings have been tapped by this driver is rendered airtight and watertight. Nonmagical food, liquid, or dry goods sealed within do not spoil, leak, rot, or suffer vermin contamination for up to 30 days.
  • Hoop-Bite Ward: Once per short rest, as an action while touching a wooden door, hatch, barricade, or chest, you tap the driver against the surface. For 10 minutes, the object gains a +2 bonus to its Damage Threshold (or Resilience) and 10 temporary hit points. During this time, the DC of any Strength check made to force open or break the object increases by 2.
  • Ring the Iron Chime: Once per long rest, you can strike an iron hoop or solid timber beam three times with the driver. A resonant hum emanates in a 20-foot radius for 5 minutes. Wooden barriers within the radius seal their hairline seams, preventing nonmagical drafts and creeping gases from passing through. Additionally, any creature within the area that makes a Dexterity (Stealth) check while moving across wooden surfaces makes the check with disadvantage, as the timber resonates loudly beneath their weight.

Knave

Master Brand’s Oak-Driver

  • Item Type: Tool / Improvised Bludgeon (Hand or Belt)
  • Slot Usage: 1 inventory item slot.
  • Armor Defense: +1 Armor Check (adds directly to Defense score while held or hung openly on the belt).
  • Quality: 3 / 3 (loses 1 Quality point upon taking a direct crushing blow or sundering strike).
  • Traits:
    • Timber-Sense: The wielder has advantage on Wisdom and Intelligence checks made to spot weak timbers, detect dry rot in mine shoring, identify hidden compartments in wooden chests, or find hidden hollows in wood paneling.
    • Watched Cask: Rations, water, or perishable cargo stored within wooden casks or chests trued by this driver do not leak, mold, or spoil, remaining fresh for 30 exploration turns or long journeys without decaying.
    • Hoop-Bite Ward: Once per day during a dungeon turn (10 minutes), the wielder may rap the driver against a wooden door or barricade. The door cannot be broken or kicked open by mundane means unless an attacker makes a Strength check with disadvantage against the wielder’s Defense.
    • Iron Chime: Once per day, the wielder strikes an iron hoop or wooden pillar three times. For one exploration turn (10 minutes), wood within a 20-foot radius knits together, halting creeping dungeon gases, drafts, and water leaks. Any wandering monsters or adversaries moving across the wooden floorboards cause the floor to groan loudly, immediately negating their surprise.

Fate

Driver of the Watched Seam

  • Aspect: Wood Remembers the Tree, Iron Forgets the Blow
  • Stunt (Eye of the Trued Stave): Because you carry the Driver of the Watched Seam, you gain a +2 bonus when using Notice or Crafts to Overcome obstacles or Create an Advantage involving wooden structures, finding concealed compartments in timber, diagnosing rot, or spotting structural stress points in wooden barricades and doors.
  • Stunt (Watched Preservation): Wooden containers trued by this driver are completely airtight and watertight; goods, provisions, and vintage liquids stored within never leak or spoil, eliminating related logistical complications or negative scene aspects.
  • Stunt (Hoop-Bite Ward): Once per scene, you may spend a Fate Point and tap a wooden door, hatch, or barricade to place the situational aspect Hoop-Bound Reinforcement with one free invoke. Enemies attempting to bypass or shatter this barrier through sheer force must overcome this aspect with increased opposition (+2).
  • Stunt (Ring the Iron Chime): Once per session, you can spend a Fate Point and strike an iron hoop or beam three times. For the duration of the scene, you create the aspect Resonant Timber Alert. Hidden or stealthy adversaries moving across wooden surfaces automatically lose their unseen advantage, and fine drafts or toxic vapors are barred from entering the room.
