Lore
During the Renaissance period on the island nation of Jōmon, a notorious rogue-monk and brewer named Gensai spent more time in harbor taverns than in prayer halls. Gensai was famous for his ability to out-drink sea captains, guild masters, and local warlords alike, winning trade concessions and gathering intelligence over endless bowls of sake. To ensure he never ran dry during long nights of negotiation, Gensai struck a pact with a trickster fox-spirit of the mountain orchards. The spirit agreed to inhabit Gensai’s wooden travel gourd, granting it the power to turn river water into sweet, potent spirits and shielding its owner from the foul effects of overindulgence. Over the centuries, artisan carvers and alchemists across the 73 island nations replicated this enchanted vessel, making it a beloved staple for traveling bards, tavern regulars, and crafty diplomats who use heavy drinking as a cover for espionage.
Description
Kitsune 582 of the Endless Reveler’s Gourd is a compact, polished wooden flask carved from dried spirit-gourd vine, reinforced with brass bands and wrapped in a cord of woven red silk. The front of the gourd features a deep etching of a five-tailed fox clutching a sake bowl between its paws. When filled with liquid, the gourd sloshes with an unnaturally smooth rhythm, and the stopper—carved from polished stag antler—emits a gentle aroma of warm rice wine, fermented plums, and toasted cinnamon. Under ultraviolet illumination or True Sight, tiny glowing fox-fire embers can be seen swirling inside the liquid, dancing in rhythm with the user’s heartbeat.

Acquisition and Commerce of Kitsune 582 of the Endless Reveler’s Gourd
Commerce within the world of Saṃsāra operates strictly as a decentralized seller’s market driven by regional access, local availability, and independent vendor leverage. Because there are no global institutional stores, large retail chains, or fixed price listings, the cost of Kitsune 582 of the Endless Reveler’s Gourd fluctuates significantly depending on the island nation, the merchant’s affiliation, and the buyer’s negotiation skills.
Types of Shops and Acquisition Locations
- Family-Owned Coopers, Potters, and Tavern Supply Outlets
- Where to Find: Located in the busy trade harbor state cities and central state state-capitals across island nations, particularly within cultural hubs like Jōmon, Banpo, and BADARIAN. These small mom-and-pop shops are operated by generations of barrel-makers, ceramic artisans, and tavern suppliers.
- How It Is Bought: The shopkeeper crafts or acquires these enchanted gourds to sell directly to visiting bards, tavern keepers, traveling merchants, and sea captains. Buyers interact directly with the crafter or merchant in person, engaging in traditional bargaining.
- Cost: In a standard tavern supply shop where fox-spirit brewing magic is understood, the gourd is typically offered at a suggested baseline price between 100 Silver and 160 Silver (10 to 16 Gold). If the buyer holds membership in a recognized Brewers Guild, Coopers Guild, or Tavern Keepers Faction, they receive a 10% discount based on their character’s tier level (a Tier 1 character receives a 10% discount off the negotiated value).
- Distillery Boutiques and High-End Alchemical Merchants
- Where to Find: Nestled near wealthy entertainment quarters, palace districts, or central city dockside markets where high-grade spirits and luxury vintages are traded.
- How It Is Bought: These specialty shops cater to wealthy nobles, guild masters, and affluent collectors who value fine rice wines and exotic alchemy. The gourd is marketed as a luxury hospitality item capable of producing instant top-shelf spirits on demand.
- Cost: Because these boutiques cater to wealthy clientele and high-status patrons, prices are marked up considerably. A merchant in a luxury district will demand between 220 Silver and 350 Silver (22 to 35 Gold) for the set, emphasizing its endless transmutational properties and hangover-immunity magic.
- Black-Market Fences and Shadow Guild Dens
- Where to Find: Operating out of hidden back rooms in harbor taverns, subterranean metropolises, or unpatrolled alleyways outside city gates, away from the oversight of municipal guards and royal tax assessors.
- How It Is Bought and Sold: Black-market dealers sell these gourds to smugglers, spies, and covert agents who use the item’s transmutational abilities and poison immunity for tavern espionage, poison testing, or covert social manipulation. Transactions are conducted strictly in physical gold or silver coinage with no official record-keeping.
- Cost: When purchasing from a black-market fence, the item costs between 250 Silver and 450 Silver (25 to 45 Gold) due to its high utility in covert operations. When a player character sells the gourd to a black-market fence, the fence pays standard merchant rates (around 50% to 60% of value) or up to double (180 Silver to 250 Silver) if they have a client actively seeking poison-mitigating or instant-brewing tools.
- World Bank Account Redemption (Financial Transactions)
- Where to Find: Prominent stone branches operated by the god of commerce in major cities across all 73 island nations.
- How It Is Bought: The World Bank does not hold inventories of general adventuring gear or run auctions. However, characters who open a new account receive 100 Gold as a starting deposit along with a choice of a specific self-recharging utility item (Blender, Clock, or Toaster). If a character wishes to use World Bank funds to purchase the vessel from a local vendor, they must withdraw physical coinage at the bank counter (incurring a 1% transaction fee rounded up to the nearest copper) or perform a direct account transfer if the vendor maintains a World Bank account.
Selling the Item to NPC Merchants
When an avatar attempts to sell Kitsune 582 of the Endless Reveler’s Gourd to a legitimate NPC merchant, standard merchant haggling rules apply:
- Merchant Offer: The merchant will haggle around 10% of the item’s perceived value multiplied by the tier level of the selling character (for a Tier 1 character, this results in a 10% reduction from the baseline offer). A merchant will typically offer between 45 Silver and 80 Silver (4.5 to 8 Gold) for the gourd.
- World Bank Deposit: Upon completion of a sale to a registered merchant, the proceeds are automatically deposited directly into the character’s World Bank account, visible only through their Mind’s Eye.
- Merchant Ledgers: Merchants maintain quasi-official ledgers recording purchases and seller identities, meaning city guards or royal tax collectors may question the seller later if the item is linked to a tavern incident or smuggling inquiry.
Tactical Roleplay Applications: Environmental Offense and Defense
Kitsune 582 of the Endless Reveler’s Gourd is far more than a simple flask for booze. In the intrigue-heavy, high-magic world of Saṃsāra, a cunning brawler, spy, or tavern diplomat uses the gourd’s transmutational alcohol, poison immunity, and intoxicating fox-fire mist to turn a casual drinking session into a formidable tool for defense and offense.
Rowdy Taverns and Harbor Alehouses
In the loud, crowded drinking halls, dockside dives, and gambling dens of coastal state-cities, violence often breaks out over unpaid bar tabs, crooked card games, or political arguments.
- Defensive Roleplay: When a bar brawl erupts or an aggressive pirate captain corners the party, the avatar remains seated with an exaggerated posture of drunken helplessness. Leveraging Iron Liver of the Fox and Reveler’s Clarity, the avatar pretends to be completely incapacitated by alcohol, tricking attackers into ignoring them as a non-combatant. Meanwhile, the passive Aegis Cover takes effect as the avatar sways and stumbles, causing incoming melee strikes or thrown mug attacks to miss as attackers misjudge the avatar’s erratic balance.
- Offensive Roleplay: During a drinking contest with a rival captain to secure passage on a ship, the avatar uses Transmute Spirits under the table to instantly convert plain river water into burning, ultra-potent spirit. The avatar out-drinks the captain with ease while suffering zero intoxication, forcing the captain into a stupor where they blabber secrets. If the tavern turns hostile, the avatar takes a swig and uses Drunken Mirage Mist, exhaling a 15-foot cone of sweet, blinding fox-fire fumes that Dazes a whole gang of thugs, giving the avatar’s allies the exact opening needed to escape through the back door.
Royal Feasts and Diplomatic Banquets
In the pristine grand halls, state banquets, and noble courts of island monarchs, physical weapons are confiscated at the door, but poisoned wine and political deception are constant threats.
- Defensive Roleplay: When attending a high-stakes noble banquet where an assassin attempts to poison the guests’ wine, the avatar’s Iron Liver of the Fox renders them completely immune to all ingested toxins and unnatural poisons. The avatar can safely drink from a poisoned chalice to demonstrate “faith” in a hostile host, shocking the assassins when no ill effects occur. If confronted by suspicious royal guards, the avatar uses the gourd’s Liquid Weightlessness to conceal up to three gallons of liquid without creating any awkward bulk or sloshing noise under their formal garments.
- Offensive Roleplay: While seated next to a corrupt minister, the avatar initiates a private toast using Toast of the Hearth-Fire. Under the guise of sharing a friendly, boisterous drink, the avatar uses the ritual to boost their allies’ temporary hit points and cure their fatigue before a planned palace heist. During a tense interrogation by an inquisitor, the avatar offers a sip from the gourd; while the avatar stays stone-cold sober behind their jovial facade, the target quickly becomes intoxicated and blabs critical state secrets.
Dense Wilderness Encampments and Frontier Outposts
Along unpatrolled forest roads, mountain camps, and remote garrison outposts, adventuring parties face cold weather, ambush attacks, and scarce clean water supplies.
- Defensive Roleplay: When stranded in freezing mountain passes or swampy marshlands with stagnant water, the avatar uses Transmute Spirits to convert unsafe, brackish water into clean, warm plum sake that keeps the party warm and morale high. During a midnight ambush by goblin raiders or wild beasts, the avatar takes a swig from the gourd and uses Drunken Mirage Mist to fill the camp with a cloud of disorienting, sweet-smelling fox-fire haze, breaking the enemy’s charge and allowing the party time to draw weapons and form a defensive perimeter.
- Offensive Roleplay: When infiltrating an enemy bandit camp, the avatar walks right into the central campfire carrying the gourd, posing as a lost, jovial brewer sharing free alcohol. The avatar uses Toast of the Hearth-Fire to gain the bandits’ trust while quietly feeding them high-potency spirits transmuted on the fly. Once the entire bandit warband is thoroughly intoxicated and incapacitated by the heavy liquor, the avatar slips away into the night or signals their party to strike the defenseless camp.
Subterranean Dungeons and Ancient Ruins
In dark cavern systems, forgotten crypts, and underground monster dens, fear and fatigue are just as lethal as claws and steel.
- Defensive Roleplay: When facing terrifying undead, mind-altering horrors, or subterranean aberrations that inflict fear, the avatar drinks from the gourd to trigger Reveler’s Clarity. The passive magic grants resistance to the Frightened and Shaken conditions, allowing the avatar to stand firm and crack jokes while companions might otherwise panic. The avatar’s swaying, unpredictable movements in the dark cavern make it difficult for monsters relying on thermal or motion sight to land clean hits.
- Offensive Roleplay: Inside tight, enclosed dungeon corridors, the avatar uses the gourd as an improvised distraction weapon. By taking a heavy gulp and exhaling Drunken Mirage Mist, the avatar fills narrow stone hallways with dense, glowing fox-fire mist that obscures line of sight for monster archers while Dazing front-line subterranean beasts. During short rests between dungeon battles, the avatar uses Toast of the Hearth-Fire to quickly grant allies 5 temporary hit points and remove fatigue, ensuring the party stays battle-ready for the next chamber.

Monk Gensai and Never-Ending Wine Gourd
Let it be known to all people who read these clumsy marks, translated through three bad scribes from stone writings made before time had proper numbers.
In the old days of the island called Jōmon, there lived a monk whose name was Gensai. Gensai was a man of very small holiness, but he possessed a liver of magnificent size and power. While the other holy men sat in quiet temples eating cold rice and counting their breaths, Gensai walked down to the noisy harbors where big boats brought barrels of sweet sake, plum wine, and dark ale. Gensai loved the tavern more than the temple, and he loved a wooden cup more than a bronze bell.
It is written in the bad grammar of the old stone that Gensai was not merely a lover of drinks, but a man of big social cunning. When warlords were angry and wished to smash each other with large iron clubs, Gensai would sit between them at a heavy oak table. He would say to them with awkward verbs: “Why do you make big blood with swords? Let us drink ten bowls of fermented rice first, and then we shall speak of who owns the mud!”
However, Gensai had a very big problem. The state-guards and greedy tavern keepers of Jōmon sold liquor for many shiny silver coins, and Gensai was a monk of zero money. Often his cup became dry as a dead bone, and when his cup was dry, his mind became sad, and the angry warlords would remember their iron clubs.
One night, under a big round moon that looked like a yellow rice cake, Gensai walked into the deep bamboo forest carrying an empty wooden travel gourd. He sat by a cold river stream, crying many bitter tears into the water because he had no money to buy wine for the festival of the harbor guild.
Suddenly, a fox-spirit with five long tails jumped down from a pine tree. The fox-spirit had glowing eyes like burning charcoal and a smile full of sharp white teeth. The fox made a strange barking noise that sounded like a laughing old man and said in broken ancient speech: “Why do you drop wet eye-water into the river, little monk of no gold? Are you missing a brain inside your head?”
Gensai wiped his nose with his sleeve and replied: “O spirit of the wild trees! I have no coins, my travel gourd is filled only with worthless river water, and my throat is dry like summer dust. Tomorrow the great harbor captains will fight each other, and I have no sweet spirits to make their hearts soft!”
The fox-spirit made a big chuckle and wagged its five tails, sending tiny orange sparks of fox-fire into the dark air. The spirit said: “You are a funny creature who prefers booze to prayers. Because you make me laugh, I shall place a trick inside your gourd.”
The fox-spirit pulled a glowing ember from its tail and dropped it into the wooden mouth of Gensai’s travel gourd. Then the fox took a sharp antler from a dead stag lying in the moss and jammed it into the top as a stopper. The spirit spoke a magic rule: “Whenever your gourd is filled with plain, boring water from a well or river, it shall instantly become the sweetest sake in all the 73 island nations. Furthermore, when you drink from it, your brain shall remain sharp like a needle, while the brains of your companions turn into soft porridge.”
Gensai was filled with massive joy. He bowed so low his forehead hit a sharp rock, but he did not care because his heart was dancing.
The next morning, Gensai walked into the center of the harbor tavern where two giant warlords sat glaring at each other, their hands resting on the handles of their big swords. The air was full of bad anger and loud shouting. Gensai stepped between them, pulling the stag-antler stopper from his wooden gourd. Instantly, a powerful scent of sweet plums, toasted cinnamon, and aged rice wine filled the room, so strong that even the tavern dogs stopped barking to smell the air.
“O mighty leaders of big armies!” shouted Gensai using improper nouns and mixed-up tenses. “Before you chop off each other’s heads and ruin these nice wooden tables, taste the humble water from my travel flask!”
Gensai poured the liquid into their clay bowls. Though the gourd was small, the liquid kept flowing out like a endless river. The warlords drank once, and their eyes grew wide like teacups. They drank twice, and their red faces began to smile. They drank ten times, and they began to sing loud songs about fat pigs and ocean waves, totally forgetting why they wished to kill each other.
For fifty years, Gensai traveled from tavern to tavern across the island nations. He out-drank sea captains, out-talked tax collectors, and tricked corrupt mayors into giving their money to the poor, all while drinking endless gallons from his magic gourd. Whenever enemies tried to poison his drink, the fox-magic inside the vessel destroyed the poison instantly, leaving Gensai unharmed and laughing.
Yet, as preserved in the final broken lines of the ancient tablet, Gensai never built a grand home, nor did he ever accumulate wealth or land. He spent his entire life wandering from one sticky tavern bench to another, surrounded by noisy drunks, smelling forever of fermented plums, and depending on a trickster spirit’s artifact just to enjoy the company of men.
Moral of the Story
He who uses clever tricks and a full flask may easily tame the anger of wild men and avoid the troubles of the world, but he who relies entirely on the magic of the cup will spend his whole life wandering from tavern to tavern without ever finding a place to call home.
