Kitsune 341 of the Verdant Sprout Shears

Lore

In the lush terrace farms and misty valley gardens of the island nation of Jōmon, a legendary herbalist and fox-spirit gardener named Hanako tended to the sacred spirit-flora of Saṃsāra. Hanako was renowned for her uncanny ability to make rare, temperamental herbs bloom in hostile climates and coax potent medicinal properties from ordinary weeds. To aid her acolytes and traveling botanists who traversed the 73 island nations, Hanako infused small brass pruning shears with the lively nature-magic of local fox-spirits. These shears were designed to whisper botanical secrets to their bearer, accelerate plant growth with glowing fox-fire embers, and protect traveling naturalists from hostile thorns and toxic flora. Over time, copies of these enchanted shears became a treasured staple among field botanists, herbal apothecaries, and wilderness foraging avatars.

Description

Kitsune 341 of the Verdant Sprout-Shears is a compact, beautifully forged pair of brass and cold-iron shears, measuring roughly seven inches in length. The handles are bound in supple green leather cord and sculpted into the likeness of two foxes curling back-to-back, their tails forming the finger loops. The sharp blades are etched with vine patterns that glow with a faint, pulsing emerald-and-gold light whenever plants are near. When snicked together, the shears produce a clear, chime-like metallic ring that smells faintly of freshly cut grass, damp earth, and blooming jasmine. Under True Sight or ultraviolet illumination, ghostly orange fox-spirits can be seen leaping across the blades, leaving trails of sprouting green leaves in their wake.

Acquisition and Commerce of Kitsune 341 of the Verdant Sprout-Shears

Within the decentralized economy of Saṃsāra, trade for specialized magical implements is dictated by localized vendor leverage, regional ecology, and craft guilds rather than standardized national pricing. Because botanists, alchemists, and herbalists are vital to every settlement’s agricultural and medicinal needs, Kitsune 341 of the Verdant Sprout-Shears circulates through several distinct commercial avenues across the 73 island nations.

Types of Shops and Acquisition Locations

  • Herbalist Guild Halls and Apothecary Outlets
    • Where to Find: Located in central agricultural hubs, apothecary quarters, and market districts of state-capitals across islands like Jōmon, Banpo, and BADARIAN.
    • How It Is Bought: Guild master herbalists and alchemical supply merchants stock these shears specifically for field botanists, medicine gatherers, and crop cultivators. Transactions take the form of direct over-the-counter sales accompanied by traditional haggling.
    • Cost: In a standard guild-sanctioned apothecary shop, the shears are offered at a baseline price between 100 Silver and 150 Silver (10 to 15 Gold). Avatars holding valid membership in an Herbalist Guild, Apothecary Syndicate, or Farmers Alliance receive a 10% discount based on their Tier level (a Tier 1 character receives a 10% discount off the negotiated price).
  • Botanical Gardens and Exotic Nursery Boutiques
    • Where to Find: Situated near aristocratic estates, royal botanical gardens, and high-tier conservatory districts where rare floral specimens and luxury gardens are maintained.
    • How It Is Bought: High-end plant merchants and landscape artisans sell the item as a luxury tool capable of instant flower propagation and flawless specimen harvesting. The shears are presented in velvet-lined wooden cases emphasizing their brass craftsmanship and growth magic.
    • Cost: Catering to wealthy estate owners, royal gardeners, and master alchemists, these boutiques mark up the price considerably. A buyer should expect to pay between 200 Silver and 320 Silver (20 to 32 Gold) for the pair.
  • Underground Alchemy Fences and Poachers’ Dens
    • Where to Find: Tucked away in clandestine backrooms behind illegal potion shops, shadow market alleys, or wilderness smuggler camps outside city walls.
    • How It Is Bought and Sold: Black-market dealers trade these shears to wilderness poachers, rogue alchemists, and illegal rare-plant harvesters who value the item’s ability to harvest double yields and bypass dangerous wilderness brambles unnoticed.
    • Cost: Fences sell the shears for between 240 Silver and 400 Silver (24 to 40 Gold) due to their high utility in illegal foraging. When a character sells the shears to a black-market fence, the fence pays standard rates (roughly 50% to 60% of item value), but may pay up to 180 Silver to 220 Silver if they have an active contract for rare plant harvesting.
  • World Bank Account Redemption (Financial Transactions)
    • Where to Find: Standard stone branches operated by the god of commerce in major cities across all 73 island nations.
    • How It Is Bought: The World Bank does not stock tools or maintain equipment inventories. However, characters opening a new account receive a 100 Gold starting deposit alongside their choice of a self-recharging utility item (Blender, Clock, or Toaster). To purchase the shears from a private vendor using World Bank funds, the avatar must withdraw physical coinage at a teller counter (subject to a 1% transaction fee rounded up to the nearest copper) or perform a direct account transfer if the merchant holds a World Bank business account.

Selling the Item to NPC Merchants

When an avatar chooses to sell Kitsune 341 of the Verdant Sprout-Shears to an NPC merchant, standard commerce protocols apply:

  • Merchant Offer: The merchant haggles based on 10% of the item’s baseline value multiplied by the seller’s character tier (for a Tier 1 character, this reduces the baseline valuation by 10%). Standard shopkeepers will typically offer between 45 Silver and 75 Silver (4.5 to 7.5 Gold) for the shears.
  • World Bank Deposit: Proceeds from legal merchant transactions are automatically deposited into the character’s World Bank account upon completion, accessible via their Mind’s Eye.
  • Merchant Ledgers: Legitimate merchants log all tool purchases in official registers. If the shears were used to harvest protected royal flora or stolen from a guild house, city guards or wardens may follow up on the transaction ledger.

Tactical Roleplay Applications: Environmental Offense and Defense

Kitsune 341 of the Verdant Sprout-Shears is far more than a simple gardening tool for an herbalist. In the hands of a clever botanist, field naturalism and nature-magic become potent assets for both offense and defense across the diverse landscapes of Saṃsāra.

Overgrown Jungles and Dense Forest Trails

Deep within ancient woodlands and thick canopy jungles, nature itself is often as treacherous as the wild beasts that inhabit it.

  • Defensive Roleplay: When ambushed along a narrow jungle path, the botanist relies on Thorn-Shield Aura. While party members stumble through razor-sharp brambles and stinging nettles, the botanist moves effortlessly through dense undergrowth, taking no physical damage or movement penalties. By using the shears’ passive Aegis Cover, leafy illusions flutter around the botanist, deflecting incoming arrows and blowdarts into the surrounding foliage.
  • Offensive Roleplay: During an encounter with hostile woodland trackers, the botanist uses Entangling Fox-Vines. With a sharp snip-snip of the brass blades toward the thick canopy overhead, glowing spectral vines laced with fox-fire drop down, pinning ambushers to tree trunks and leaving them vulnerable to the party’s counter-attack.

Overgrown Ancient Ruins and Stone Crypts

In crumbling temples and moss-covered ruins, ancient plant life, suffocating ivy, and hidden botanical traps frequently guard forgotten treasures.

  • Defensive Roleplay: When entering a forgotten stone chamber sealed by toxic fungal spores or carnivorous plants, the botanist performs the Floral Purify Ritual. Over ten minutes, trimming the surrounding flora and burning aromatic herbs neutralizes poisonous airborne spores and purifies stagnant water, creating a safe zone for the party to rest and investigate.
  • Offensive Roleplay: Faced with a locked stone portal or a heavily armored stone golem, the botanist applies Rapid Bloom. By thrusting dormant vine seeds into microscopic cracks in the stone or armor and snipping the shears, the vines instantaneously burst into thick, mature growth, cracking stone doors open or jamming the mechanical joints of armored constructs.

Urban Gardens, Royal Conservatories, and Estates

Within high-society conservatories and noble estates, direct physical combat is treasonous, but botanical espionage and subtle sabotage thrive.

  • Defensive Roleplay: When cornered by estate guards in a private glasshouse, the botanist uses Whisper of the Green to instantly identify toxic or blinding flora in the room. Hovering the shears near rare specimens allows the botanist to harvest protective antidote leaves on the spot using Unspoiled Harvest, ensuring the party is immune to any alchemical traps set by the estate’s alchemist.
  • Offensive Roleplay: During a covert break-in, the botanist target-snips Rapid Bloom near decorative wall-climbing ivy. Within seconds, tiny vines erupt into massive, thick ropes of foliage that scale a three-story estate wall, creating an instant, quiet climbing ladder for the party to bypass ground-level guards entirely.

Harsh Deserts and Sterile Wastelands

In barren, arid environments where plant life is scarce, any green life can mean the difference between survival and death.

  • Defensive Roleplay: When pursued across barren sand dunes by riding beasts, the botanist locates dried, dormant desert scrub or root remnants hidden beneath the sand. Activating Entangling Fox-Vines causes the buried roots to erupt into a sudden barrier of thorny, fox-fire-lit brambles, tripping pursuers’ mounts and halting their charge.
  • Offensive Roleplay: Faced with a lack of medicinal herbs or water in a desolate wasteland, the botanist uses Rapid Bloom on a single dried seed from their pouch. In seconds, the seed erupts into a fully grown, water-rich succulent or medicinal flower. Using Unspoiled Harvest, the botanist harvests double the standard yield of vital sap and alchemical materials, sustaining the party’s health and alchemy supplies in the most hostile conditions.

    • Snip the shears three times near a dormant plant seed or wilted flower.
    • If the plant immediately sprouts or blooms with a chime-like ringing sound and a flash of fox-fire embers, the Kitsune enchantment has successfully bonded to the shears.

Gardener Hanako and Snapping Green Iron

Let it be known by all peoples who read these clumsy marks, translated through three bad scribes from stone writings made before time had proper numbers.

In the old days of the island called Jōmon, there lived a woman whose name was Hanako. Hanako was a person of very big green thumbs. It is written in the bad grammar of the old stone that Hanako could look at a dry, dead stick and the stick would become a flower immediately. She was very good friends with the dirt and the rain.

While the other humans made big noise in the State-Cities, Hanako sat in the misty valleys. She made gardens for the local spirits, which are called Kami in the good language but “big ghost things” in the translation. The Kami loved Hanako because she grew special vegetables that made their ghost-bellies happy.

However, a very big bad problem arrived. In those days, there was a terrible disease among the plants, which the ancient stone calls “The Big Brown Wilting.” It was not a normal disease; it was made by a very angry demon who hated salad.

The Big Brown Wilting walked across the 73 island nations. It made the rice fall down dead. It made the fruit trees sad and dry. The people were very hungry and made big crying noises to Hanako.

Hanako went into her garden, but even her hands could not stop the demon’s bad brown magic. Her favorite medicinal herbs turned to dust when she touched them. She was very much sad.

It is written that Hanako walked into the wild forest where the humans do not go. She sat under a very grand tree and spoke to the empty air using words of big politeness: “O, mighty wild things of the forest! My gardens are broken, the humans are hungry, and the brown disease is eating the world. I need a tool of big biting power to cut the bad magic away.”

Suddenly, a wild beast arrived. It was a fox, but not a normal fox. It had three tails and eyes like small suns. This was a spirit-fox, a Kitsune, which the bad translation calls “The Orange Trick-Dog.”

The Kitsune looked at Hanako and made a big chuckle that sounded like silver bells breaking. The fox spoke in broken, ancient speech: “Hanako who grows the good food! I have watched you. You are funny and do not eat the forest birds. I will give you a tool, but it is a tool of tricks.”

The fox-spirit ran around Hanako three times. On the fourth time, it jumped into the air and bit the empty air with loud teeth. SNIP!

When the fox landed, in its mouth was not a rabbit, but a pair of shears made of brass and cold iron. But the shears were not finished. The fox used its paws to hammer the metal on a stone using very fast Kitsune speed. It carved its own image into the handles so the handles looked like two foxes back-to-back. Then, it dropped a tear of fox-fire into the iron blades, making the vine patterns on them pulse with a bad green light.

The Kitsune gave the shears to Hanako and said: “This tool will cut the brown magic. But be careful, little farmer. Every time you cut the bad things, the tool will make new green life. Tricks happen when you grow things too fast.”

Hanako took the shears. They felt warm, like holding a sleepy cat. She ran to the nearest farm where the Rice Kami was dying.

The Big Brown Wilting demon was there, looking like a big cloud of brown smoke. It was laughing at the dead rice. Hanako stepped forward, holding the shears. She did not use a sword; she just made a big snip in the air near the demon. SNIP!

A flash of orange and green light erupted. The sound of a bell rang out. A powerful smell of fresh cut grass and blooming jasmine filled the field, making the demon choke because it hated good smells. Spectral vines with orange fox-fire embers shot out from the blades and wrapped around the brown smoke, squeezing it very hard.

Where the demon’s foot had touched the dirt, Hanako snipped again at the ground. Rapid Bloom! In six seconds, new, perfect green rice stalks burst out of the dry earth, fully grown and heavy with food. The trick of the Kitsune was true: it was growing too fast, creating a rice forest, but it was better than dead dust.

The demon was very scared of the bell sound and the fast green growing. It made a screaming noise and ran away to hide in the sterile wastelands.

Hanako traveled across all 73 island nations with the Verdant Sprout-Shears. She snipped and clicked the brass foxes. SNIP! She removed natural poisons. CLICK! She made vines entangle robbers who tried to steal her seeds. SNIP! CLICK! Where she walked, lush gardens appeared instantly, sometimes too much, trapping people in their houses with giant roses, but no one was hungry.

But the moral of the story is also preserved in the final, cracked lines of the ancient stone tablet.

For many years, Hanako saved the food. But because she had the shears of instant growing, she forgot how to wait. She became impatient with the slow turning of the seasons. She tried to use the shears to make a sacred spirit-flower bloom before its time. The flower bloomed, yes, but because it was forced, it had no scent, and its seeds were hollow. The flower Kami was insulted and cursed the local harvest for a year.

Moral of the Story

It is written that a tool of magical growth may defeat the darkness and fill the belly in a time of big hunger, which is a good thing. However, he who relies entirely on the quick snip of a magic blade will forget the wisdom of patience and the proper turning of the seasons, learning that true, lasting growth cannot be forced before its right and proper time.
