Lore

  • During the quiet darkness weeks on the outer shores of the Lapita island chain, tribal shamans gather beneath coastal volcanic overhangs to prepare the sacred communal kava bowl.
  • By steeping sun-dried piper methysticum roots in water drawn from natural conduits where the boundary between planes is thin, the elders discovered they could project their spiritual essence across short spatial gaps.
  • This ceremonial foot-wrap was originally woven for messengers who were required to dance across boiling volcanic vents and jagged reef flats without being caught by predatory beasts or falling into treacherous fissures.
  • Imbued with the shared spiritual momentum of ancestral dancers, the footwear allows a wearer to briefly step out of the material plane, momentarily slipping through the veil to reappear a short distance away in a burst of scented herbal mist.

Description

  • The item consists of a pair of flexible foot-wraps fashioned from tightly braided dried kava fibers, bound with strips of tanned leather and reinforced along the soles with cross-stitched swamp reeds.
  • Encircling the ankle collars are rows of small, hollowed basalt toggles that contain fine grains of crushed purple magic crystals, which rattle softly with every stride.
  • The under-soles are treated with a dark, hardened kava resin paste that continuously emits a mild, earthy, and peppery fragrance when warmed by the wearer’s movement.
  • Along the instep of each wrap, faint geometric runic patterns are etched in silver-reactive ink, glowing with a soft ultraviolet radiance that flares whenever spatial displacement occurs.

  • Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
  • Gear Slot: Foot Slot (Left and Right)
  • Attunement: Requires Simple Attunement (1 minute of rhythmic pacing while wearing the wraps)
  • Armor Check: +1 AC
  • Item Resilience: 10
  • Item Health Points: Maximum Avatar Health Points + 10 HP
  • Weight: 1 pound
  • Maximum Capacity: Single gear slot allocation
  • Usage Limitation: Tier 1 avatars or higher

Passive Magics

  • Ancestral Grounding: The braided root construction absorbs shock and vibrations from rough terrain, granting the avatar a +1 bonus on all saving throws against being knocked Prone, Shaken, or displaced by environmental hazards.
  • Veil Step Momentum: Whenever the avatar takes a movement action across broken stone, mud, or shallow water, the wraps smooth the transition across physical barriers, preventing difficult terrain from reducing base movement speed.
  • Ethereal Buffer: The residual herbal magic clinging to the avatar’s legs provides resistance against spatial disorientation, granting a +1 bonus to saving throws against effects that inflict the Anchored, Flat-Footed, or Temporal Shifted conditions.

Activable Magics

  • Ancestral Blink (Action): The avatar stomps their heel against the ground and speaks a rapid somatic chant lasting under six seconds. The avatar instantly dematerializes in a brief puff of peppery herbal vapor and teleports up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space they can perceive. This displacement does not trigger opportunity attacks or reactions from adjacent foes. This ability can be used twice per long rest.
  • Reactive Fade (Reaction): When an incoming melee or ranged attack roll matches the avatar’s Armor Check exactly, the avatar may immediately expend a reaction to dissolve into an ethereal blur, shifting 5 feet in any direction and causing the triggering attack to miss entirely. This ability can be used once per long rest.
  • Herbal Vigor (Action): The avatar pauses to inhale the warm, soothing kava scent rising from the foot-wraps. The calming ancestral energy restores 4 Health Points directly to the avatar’s health pool. This ability can be used once per long rest.

Commercial Outlets and Transaction Costs for Kava 812 of the Ancestral Step

Coastal Cobbler Stalls and Traditional Weaveries

  • These shops operate as modest, family-owned craft stalls situated along the sandy thoroughfares of port districts, fishing villages, and coastal market plazas.
  • The craftsmen are local leatherworkers, cordage artisans, and herbal weavers who manually braid regional root fibers into specialized footwear for scouts and couriers.
  • Items are purchased directly over the workbench after an exchange of greetings and a brief demonstration of how to pace across the stone floor to awaken the dormant root weave.
  • Selling this item to a shopkeeper follows standard commercial practices where the merchant negotiates around 10% of the item’s baseline value multiplied by the selling character’s tier.
  • The resulting funds from an approved sale are officially transferred into the character’s World Bank ledger, accompanied by brief routine inquiries regarding who crafted the original wraps.
  • Buyers holding verified standing within an associated local guild or maritime faction receive a 10% discount off the purchase valuation per character tier.
  • Standard suggested acquisition cost in an open cobbler stall: 45 silver coins to 75 silver coins (or equivalent denominations in nickel or copper).
  • Standard merchant buyback offer: 4 silver to 8 silver per character tier, logged directly into municipal trade books.

Monastic Waystations and Mountain Shrines

  • Situated along rugged pilgrimage trails, volcanic ridges, and secluded temple grounds near ancient stone circles.
  • Maintained by monks, shrinekeepers, and spiritual messengers who weave ceremonial foot-wraps during seasonal meditation cycles to honor ancestral paths.
  • Acquisition requires roleplay interaction where the prospective owner demonstrates respect for the ancestral spirits and swears not to use the spatial magic for frivolous or destructive acts.
  • Shrines rarely pay out precious metal bullion when receiving gear; instead, they trade in consecrated supplies, regional non-metal token currency, or temple housing vouchers.
  • Recognized initiates of affiliated spiritual factions can acquire consecrated pairs stored within clean institutional crypts on the premises.
  • Standard suggested acquisition cost: 50 silver coins to 1 electrum (or up to 90 silver coins in remote, high-altitude shrines where materials must be hauled from the coast).
  • Redemption or resale value in regional non-metal currency: 5 to 9 stamped clay tokens, wood chits, or shell currency matching the weight standard of official silver coinage.

Harbor Trade Depots and Outfitter Caravans

  • Positioned around primary shipping wharves, regional caravan hubs, and transport docks connecting coastal roads to inland capitals.
  • Run by independent caravan merchants and trade outfitters catering to couriers, mercenaries, and adventuring parties preparing for long-distance overland travel.
  • All sales conducted at these locations are subject to regional transit taxes, including local warlord gate fees of 1% to 3% depending on whether the items are passing through or sold for retail.
  • If the footwear was imported across ocean currents from distant western island chains, the asking price increases to cover cargo carriage and shipping fees.
  • Standard suggested acquisition cost: 60 silver coins to 110 silver coins, fluctuating based on local courier demand and road safety.
  • Standard merchant buyback offer: 6 silver to 11 silver per character tier, recorded and taxed under port authority commerce regulations.

Subterranean Dens and Black-Market Smuggler Outposts

  • Hidden inside unmarked cellars, abandoned warehouse crawlspaces, and shadowed back-alleys away from country military roadway patrols.
  • Operated by illicit dealers and rogue fences who traffic in unlogged adventuring gear, reclaimed battle loot, and unregistered magical artifacts.
  • All transactions are conducted strictly using physical metal coins such as gold, silver, or electrum, avoiding official World Bank transaction tracking entirely.
  • Guild discounts do not apply in these venues, and merchants sell goods at fixed or elevated rates depending on how urgently the buyer needs spatial mobility.
  • When selling to a black-market fence, the seller receives untracked physical currency immediately without the standard 1% bank service fee or identity questioning.
  • If a buyer is actively seeking escape gear or spatial displacement items, a fence may offer up to twice the standard merchant rate in unrecorded coin.
  • Standard black-market purchase cost: 90 silver coins to 12 gold coins in raw, unbanked coin.
  • Standard black-market buyback price offered to sellers: 8 silver to 18 silver per character tier in physical metal currency.

Tactical Applications and Roleplay Maneuvers for Kava 812 of the Ancestral Step

Volcanic Ridges, Boiling Magma Vents, and Cragged Lava Fields

  • On unstable volcanic slopes where magma flows crack open the earth and sulfurous steam vents burst unpredictably, an avatar wearing the kava foot-wraps navigates treacherous terrain with unhindered agility.
  • Defensive Roleplay: When a sudden tremor shatters the rock shelf beneath the party or an enemy tries to shove the avatar into a lava fissure, the avatar stomps a heel to activate Ancestral Blink, instantly vanishing in a swirl of peppery vapor and reappearing fifteen feet away on solid basalt.
  • The natural grounding woven into the root fibers prevents the avatar from losing balance on loose volcanic scree, providing steady footing against shockwaves generated by subterranean magma shifts.
  • Offensive Roleplay: The avatar utilizes short-range spatial shifting to bypass wide magma chasms, blinking directly behind elevated archers or fire-aspected beasts perched on isolated rock pillars to deliver sudden, unparried melee strikes before the enemy can reposition.

Industrial Steamworks, Crowded Factory Floors, and Gear Trenches

  • Within dense manufacturing hubs powered by steam pressure, mechanical transmission shafts, and massive iron machinery, the foot-wraps provide rapid mobility through tight industrial corridors.
  • Defensive Roleplay: In narrow engine rooms where high-pressure steam pipes rupture or heavy iron gears threaten to crush an avatar, the avatar triggers Reactive Fade the moment an enemy strike lands, shifting five feet into the safety of an alcove while the foe’s weapon smashes uselessly into the machinery.
  • The aromatic vapors rising from the heated root soles filter out the acrid stench of grease and burning oil, allowing the user to focus on precise evasion without suffering from disorientation.
  • Offensive Roleplay: When factory security forces form tight defensive barricades or shield walls in narrow gangways, the avatar steps through the veil, dematerializing past the front line to strike directly at vulnerable technomancers or machine operators maintaining the defensive batteries.

Dense Swamps, Quicksand Bogs, and Murky Estuaries

  • In wetlands where deep mud, tangled roots, and stagnant water severely hinder standard travel and combat positioning, the footwear maintains absolute freedom of movement.
  • Defensive Roleplay: While traversing quagmires or hidden sinkholes, the avatar relies on the Veil Step Momentum passive, walking across deep silt and marsh water without sinking or suffering movement penalties, keeping a safe distance from submerged predators.
  • If pulled under by constricting swamp serpents or vine traps, the avatar activates Ancestral Blink to instantly slip the physical grapple, reappearing safely on a nearby mangrove root.
  • Offensive Roleplay: The avatar dashes across open swamp water without splashing or slowing down, closing the gap against aquatic beasts or concealed raiders, and landing precision attacks before the target realizes their victim has crossed the hazardous terrain.

Urban Alleyways, High Castle Walls, and Walled City Gates

  • In densely packed metropolitan environments with towering stone walls, narrow cobblestone alleys, and heavily taxed checkpoints, the foot-wraps serve as an exceptional mobility tool.
  • Defensive Roleplay: When ambushed by city cutpurses in dead-end alleys or cornered by aggressive garrison guards, the avatar executes an Ancestral Blink straight upward or through iron portcullises, clearing a fifteen-foot stone barricade to reach rooftops and break line of sight instantly.
  • The shock-absorbing sole construction deadens the sound of landings on hard cobblestones, allowing the avatar to drop from elevated positions without stumbling or making loud impacts.
  • Offensive Roleplay: During urban skirmishes, the avatar feints along narrow corridors, waits for an enemy to commit to a heavy charge, and uses Reactive Fade to vanish sideways into a doorway, allowing the attacker to stumble forward before delivering a counter-blow from behind.

Maritime Vessels, Rolling Ship Decks, and Boarding Skiffs

  • Aboard sailing vessels navigating turbulent ocean currents or during chaotic naval boarding actions, the foot-wraps ensure constant balance and spatial control.
  • Defensive Roleplay: When heavy swells tilt the ship’s deck or sweeping boom poles threaten to sweep crew members overboard, the grounding passive locks the avatar’s balance securely to the wet timber.
  • If targeted by a sweeping polearm or naval harpoon that matches their Armor Check, the avatar dissolves into a peppery mist, shifting five feet across the deck to safety.
  • Offensive Roleplay: During boarding maneuvers against hostile vessels, the avatar leaps from the rigging, blinking across the open water gap between ships to materialize directly on the enemy’s quarterdeck, bypassing the front-line boarding pikes to engage the ship’s officers immediately.

Perception of Activation:

Five Senses

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: The moment the spatial shift engages, the surrounding world smears into an instantaneous violet streak; for a split fraction of a second, the physical landscape fades into a semi-translucent, starry void before instantly snapping back into sharp focus at the destination point amidst a faint haze of pale purple vapor.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The onlooker sees the geometric runes along the instep flare with bright ultraviolet luminescence, followed by the avatar’s physical form dissolving rapidly into a soft curl of translucent violet mist that collapses in on itself and instantaneously reforms fifteen feet away.
    • Positives: Clean visual confirmation of the new arrival space, unobstructed by immediate physical obstacles or intervening enemies.
    • Negatives: A momentary flash of visual displacement that can cause brief split-second refocusing delays in bright sunlight.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: Ambient audio abruptly drops into a deep, muffled vacuum during the phase transition, followed by a crisp, hollow pop of displaced air and the light, melodic clinking of basalt crystal toggles settling against the ankles upon landing.
    • Observer’s Perspective: A sudden, distinct acoustic crack—similar to the soft snap of a dry twig or a pocket of steam imploding—echoes at the departure point, followed immediately by the rustling sound of foot-wraps striking the ground fifteen feet away.
    • Positives: The rapid displacement makes very little acoustic noise compared to running, sprinting, or jumping across gravel or stone.
    • Negatives: The subtle implosion sound of displaced air can still alert highly perceptive sentries in quiet rooms or subterranean passages.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: The avatar’s nostrils are filled with a sudden, warm burst of crushed piper methysticum roots, rich loamy soil, and a dry, peppery floral aroma that lingers in the breathing passages.
    • Observer’s Perspective: A distinct and pleasant waft of warm, herbal earth and toasted root resin drifts through the exact spot where the avatar was standing moments before.
    • Positives: The soothing herbal scent clears the sinuses and masks noxious odors such as sewer gases, swamp rot, or chemical fumes.
    • Negatives: The lingering peppery scent left behind at the departure point can be detected by keen-nosed tracking beasts.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: A sharp, astringent sensation spreads across the palate, leaving an earthy, slightly numb, peppery coating on the lips and tongue that mimics the physical ingestion of a fresh kava brew.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The observer notes the avatar briefly smacking their lips or swallowing once as their physical form rematerializes.
    • Positives: The numbing sensation suppresses dry mouth and prevents involuntary gasping during sudden evasive movements.
    • Negatives: The bitter, lingering aftertaste diminishes normal taste acuity for several minutes following repeated spatial blinks.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: The avatar feels a sudden sensation of weightlessness as if gravity briefly ceased to exist, accompanied by a soothing, cool prickle traveling up the calves before firm, solid resistance returns under the soles of the feet upon landing.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The onlooker observes the avatar’s landing as completely fluid, with no heavy knee compression, stumbling, or loss of footing regardless of the unevenness of the target surface.
    • Positives: Eliminates the jarring kinetic shock and joint strain associated with jumping or falling from elevated ledges.
    • Negatives: The sudden transition back into full physical mass can cause a momentary prickling itch across the skin of the lower legs.

Extra-Sensory Perceptions

  • Planar Veil Awareness:
    • User’s Perspective: For a microsecond during transition, the character’s consciousness brushes against the outer boundary of the ethereal sea, perceiving thin, luminous threads connecting all nearby objects, living creatures, and solid matter.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Nearby magic-sensitive entities or individuals using True Sight perceive a brief, faint distortion in the local weave resembling a subtle ripple across water.
    • Positives: Grants instinctive awareness of whether the destination space is completely solid, occupied, or hazardous before physical matter fully locks in.
    • Negatives: Passing through high concentrations of wild magic or severe planar rifts can introduce slight tingling psychic interference.
  • Kinetic Momentum Absorption:
    • User’s Perspective: The avatar perceives kinetic vectors from falls, shoves, or incoming impacts being absorbed and diffused downward through the roots into the planar fabric rather than jolting their bones.
    • Observer’s Perspective: When landing on jagged or sloped ground, the avatar appears anchored and upright, displaying no residual wobble or inertial slide.
    • Positives: Prevents loss of balance, reduces knockdown vulnerability, and negates the destabilizing forces of rough or shifting terrain.
    • Negatives: Completely deadens the natural kinetic bounce or rebound that might otherwise assist in continuous vaulting maneuvers.
  • Ancestral Dance Rhythm:
    • User’s Perspective: The character feels a faint, rhythmic cadence echoing in their subconscious, providing an intuitive tempo that guides foot placement, stride spacing, and timing.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The avatar moves with an eerie, rhythmic grace that makes their steps appear premeditated and completely natural, even through chaos or dense combat.
    • Positives: Heightens physical coordination, reaction timing, and confidence during high-speed tactical positioning.
    • Negatives: The persistent psychic rhythm can be mildly distracting when attempting tasks that require absolute mental stillness or intricate concentration.

Crafting Recipe: Ancestral Wraps of the Spatial Shifter

Materials Needed

  • Four ounces of cured, long-strand piper methysticum root fibers harvested from coastal island groves.
  • Two strips of supple, oil-tanned leather measuring twenty inches in length for lateral binding.
  • Half an ounce of dried swamp reeds, selected for flexibility and woven sole reinforcement.
  • Four small, hollowed volcanic basalt toggles with drilled mounting holes.
  • One dram of distilled kava root resin mixed with tree sap binding paste.
  • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized arcane catalyst dropped from a magical creature or purchased through a vendor).
  • Half an ounce of luminescent moss extract blended with silver-reactive mineral ink for instep rune tracing.

Tools Required

  • One bone-handled stitching awl for perforating leather strips and weaving reeds.
  • One fluid collector syringe used to extract and inject the crystal-infused resin into the sole fibers.
  • One stone mortar and basalt pestle for crushing root resin and pulverizing crystal fragments.
  • One jeweler’s fine scoring stylus for etching geometric displacement sigils into the leather and basalt toggles.
  • One low-heat drying brazier or enclosed steam plate for curing the resin base.

Skill Requirements

  • Crafting (Leatherworking / Weaving): Level 5 or higher (plus 1 additional level corresponding to the Tier 1 finished item).
  • Alchemical Crafting (Herbal Extraction): Level 3 or higher to distill and stabilize the numbing resin compounds without degrading potency.
  • Runecraft / Arcane Inscription: Level 2 or higher to properly align the spatial transference runes along the instep.

Crafting Steps

  • Fiber Preparation and Sole Weaving:
    • Submerge the dried piper methysticum root strands in warm elemental steam water for one hour until pliable.
    • Braid the softened root strands with the split swamp reeds using a tight cross-stitch technique to fashion two durable, foot-shaped sole pads.
    • Attach the oil-tanned leather binding strips along the edges of each sole pad using the stitching awl, leaving excess length to wrap securely around the ankles and insteps.
  • Catalyst Crushing and Resin Injection:
    • Place the Tier 1 Magic Crystal into the stone mortar along with the distilled kava root resin and sap binding paste.
    • Pulverize the mixture until the magic crystal is reduced to fine, shimmering violet dust evenly suspended throughout the dark, fragrant resin.
    • Fill the fluid collector syringe with the viscous mixture and inject it into the hollowed interior pores of the braided root sole pads, forming an aromatic, shock-absorbing underlayer.
  • Basalt Toggle and Ankle Mounting:
    • Using the fine scoring stylus, carve tiny spatial channeling runes into the outer surface of each of the four hollowed basalt toggles.
    • Fill the hollow cavity of each toggle with remaining grains of pulverized magic crystal dust and seal the openings with tree sap.
    • Secure two prepared toggles onto the ankle collar straps of each foot-wrap, ensuring they rattle lightly together when the wearer moves.
  • Instep Inscription and Curing:
    • Trace the geometric ancestral runes across the upper leather instep panels using the stylus dipped in the silver-reactive luminescent ink.
    • Ensure the lines connect smoothly to channel somatic energy from the wearer’s leg directly into the root sole matrix.
    • Place both completed foot-wraps above the low-heat drying brazier for thirty minutes, allowing the sap to set, the resin to cure, and the ink to bind permanently into the fibers.
  • Harmonization and Spatial Awakening:
    • Hold both wraps in both hands and chant the ancestral somatic cadence for longer than six seconds to awaken the crystalline matrix within the resin.
    • Test the flexibility of the heel joints, confirm the steady emission of the earthy peppery aroma, and roll a d20 to verify that no crafting flaw or critical failure destabilizes the enchantment.

Leaping Foot-Brother and Hollow Stone of Fire

In the season before the counting of the great monarchies, when the world-moon was still cooling its soft crust beneath the eye of the star Helios, there lived a coastal runner among the eastern shores of the Lapita sea-clans. His spoken designation in the rough clay-scratchings of the old scribes translates across the ages as “He Who Steps Upon the Wave Before the Salt Is Dry,” though the common people called him simply Taro. In those unmeasured years, the adventuring souls had not yet spread their many towns across the seventy-three lands, and the beasts of Gaialilith’s menagerie roamed across the volcanic cliffs without fear of spear or fence.

Taro was a small-bodied man whose duty to the seven hearths was the carrying of the smoked fish and the dried kelp cakes from the shoreward flats to the high stone lodges upon the fire-mountain ridge. The distance was many miles of broken black glass, boiling mud-vents, and narrow cracks where the boiling red blood of the world flowed into the salty foam. Many runners who were broad of chest and heavy of limb perished along the path, for the stone was brittle like dried clay, and the great four-legged snapping drakes that lived in the warm sulfur springs would wait behind the steam-plumes to crush the ankle-bones of the messengers.

The high-elder of the mountain clan spoke unto Taro with harsh words from the stone seat: “If the dried fish are not brought to the hearth before the dimming week turns into the deep darkness of the gas-sphere, the winter council shall cast your family into the outer forest where the wild boars tear the flesh.”

Taro took his woven reed basket upon his shoulders and wept with great sorrow into the volcanic dust. His feet were torn with many red cuts from the sharp edges of the basalt, and his knees were swollen like the roots of the mangrove shrub. He sat beside an ancient, boiling pool of gray mud where the steam rose thick and white into the sky, obscuring the path ahead. Beside the water grew an ancient, crooked bush of the piper root, whose leaves did not droop even when the sulfur gas blew strong from the mountain throat.

As Taro washed the blood from his feet in the cooling margins of the salt spring, a strange, rhythmic tapping arose from beneath the black soil. The sound was not the stamping of a goat, nor the rolling of a stone, but the steady drum-beat of an ancestor’s heel tapping upon a hollow log. From the center of the piper shrub came a voice that spoke in the backward grammar of the first elementals, which modern letters can only catch in broken fragments.

The voice of the low-earth said: “Why do you drag the two heavy meat-pegs of your legs as though you were a stone dragged by an ox? The ground beneath your feet is not a wall that holds you fast, but a thin leaf floating upon the deep water of the other realm. If you bind the spirit of the bitter root around your heels and cease your heavy stamping, the earth shall open its secret doorways and let you pass between the ticks of the clock.”

Taro did not comprehend the whole meaning of the backward speech, for his belly was empty and his fear of the mountain council was great. Yet he drew his flint cutting-knife and began to harvest the longest taproots of the bush, slicing through the tough bark until his fingers were stained brown with the fragrant juice. He brought the roots to a flat stone beside the boiling spring and gathered two heavy basalt rocks that had been hollowed by the sea-wash.

Remembering the sacred cadence taught to the first people who fell from the sky of purgatory, Taro began to strike the roots upon the rock. He struck seventy times without resting his arms. He sang the ancient chant of the seven directions, calling upon the spirit of the earth-mother to pacify the jagged stone. As his song passed the length of sixty deep breaths, a small, multi-legged crawler with a shell made of purple magic crystal crawled from the sulfur steam. The creature touched the frothing juice of the mashed root and expired, its crystalline shell dissolving into the brown pulp until the paste glowed with the cold, pale luminescence of the night-sky runes.

Taro took long, supple strips of cured pig-hide and braided them with the tough outer skin of the kava root and the crushed reeds of the marsh. He spread the glowing purple paste along the inner soles of the wraps and fastened four hollowed basalt stones filled with the shimmering crystal dust to the ankle-straps. When he bound the braided cords tightly around his calves and laced the leather across his arches, a great warmth entered the marrow of his leg-bones, and the smell of toasted pepper filled his mouth.

The ancient script records that when Taro stood upon his feet, he did not feel the sharpness of the black glass beneath his soles. The weight of his body seemed to dissolve like salt in a cooking pot. When he took his first forward step, a great marvel occurred that caused the sea-birds to scream in wonder.

His right heel struck the basalt with the hollow sound of a falling coconut. In the same breath, before his left foot could touch the dirt, his physical form smeared into a violet vapor that smelled of dry root-resin. The space where he stood became empty, and with a soft pop of displaced air, Taro materialized fifteen paces ahead, standing firmly upon the far side of a wide chasm of boiling lava where no bridge had ever been built.

A giant crested drake, whose scales were as hard as iron plate, sprang from behind a smoking vent with open jaws to swallow the runner whole. But Taro did not flee in panic, nor did he raise a shield. He breathed deeply of the warm kava aroma rising from his insteps and spoke the short word of the shifting wind. The teeth of the great beast snapped together with the roar of thunder, but they caught only a fading curl of purple smoke. Taro appeared five paces behind the beast’s tail, unhurt and balanced, his feet resting lightly upon the crumbling lip of the cliff.

Taro ran up the steep spine of the fire-mountain with the speed of an arrow shot from a bow. Where the path was broken by landslides, he blinked through the air; where the ground was deep with boiling mud, his woven soles skimmed across the surface without sinking the depth of a fingernail. He reached the high stone lodges before the star Helios had touched the western sea-rim, carrying the basket of dried kelp and fish without a single drop of sweat upon his brow.

The high-elder of the clan stood upon the threshold of the stone hall, astonished and terrified by the runner’s swiftness. The elder shouted: “How have you crossed the burning chasm of the dragon without burning your flesh or breaking your bones? Did you hire an airship of the gnomes?”

Taro pointed down to the braided root-wraps upon his feet, where the violet runes were glowing with soft light through the mountain dust. He answered the council: “He who fights the mountain with hard boots will find his joints turned to powder, for the rock is harder than the bone. But he who clothes his feet in the wisdom of the root does not strike the earth; he dances through the hidden seams where the world was joined together, and the stone becomes as empty as the air.”

The chiefs and warriors of the clan sought to take the foot-wraps from Taro to wear them into battle, but when a man of heavy pride tied the cords without chanting the seventy strikes or crushing the glowing crystal into the paste, the wraps became stiff like dry wood and caused his heels to blister with fierce heat, for he had not quieted his spirit in the kava bowl.

Taro remained the great path-opener for his people through forty changes of the seasons. When sudden volcanic collapses tore the roadways of the island or hostile raiding canoes blocked the narrow reefs, he leaped across the water-gaps and fire-vents to bring medicine, warnings, and food to the scattered settlements. When his avatar reached the fullness of its years and the time arrived for his soul to return to the memory-well, he took the ancestral wraps and placed them inside a chest of fragrant cedar, burying it beneath the roots of the great mother-shrub so that future runners might find the path when the world is dark.

Moral of the Story

Obstacles are insurmountable only to those who treat the physical path as an unyielding wall; those who learn to quiet their pride and attune their steps to the subtle currents of the world will discover that every barrier contains an open doorway for the humble traveler.
