Lore
- Deep within the southern maritime islands of the Lapita region, ancestral roots of the piper methysticum plant are ground between volcanic stones to form the ceremonial kava draught.
- The elders of the coastal clans discovered that when the bitter liquid is strained through runic fibers and blessed through rhythmic chanting during the dark moon phase, the drinker’s physical eyes glaze over with a pale milky sheen, shifting their perception entirely into the surrounding spiritual weave.
- Woven by shamans during communal communion rites, this sacred headwear channels the meditative stillness of the kava ritual, bridging the gap between the material shell and the spiritual echoes left by ancient warriors who fought without relying on natural light.
- Bearers of this headwear undergo traditional sensory deprivation rituals, learning to quiet their panic when sight vanishes and instead attune their senses to the subtle air currents, rhythmic heartbeats, and vibrations moving through the ground.
Description
- The item is crafted from tightly braided, dried kava root fibers interwoven with dark hemp and polished obsidian prayer beads that dangle along the temples.
- A thick, fibrous band extends downward to completely cover the wearer’s eyes, secured by two adjustable woven straps fastened with carved volcanic stone toggles at the back of the skull.
- The interior lining is treated with a dried, aromatic kava resin paste that emits a faint, earthy, and peppery scent whenever it comes into contact with body heat.
- Faint purple runes are etched directly into the fibrous weave along the forehead band, shimmering with subtle ultraviolet light that only those with spiritual or true sight can detect.

Activable Magics
- Ancestral Chant (Normal Somatic Action): The avatar speaks a short ancestral cadence lasting under six seconds, invoking the spiritual lineage of the root. For 1 minute, the range of the avatar’s Blindsight extends from 15 feet to 30 feet, and the avatar gains the ability to perceive the exact location of any moving creature touching the same continuous surface via Tremorsense out to 30 feet. This ability can be used twice per long rest.
- Numbing Draught (Action): The avatar draws deep upon the aromatic essence within the resin lining of the headwear. The calming magic numbs physical shock, instantly granting 5 temporary Health Points that absorb incoming damage before the avatar’s standard health pool is reduced. These temporary points last for 1 hour or until depleted. This ability can be activated once per long rest.
- Spiritual Disruption Riposte (Reaction): When an enemy within 5 feet misses an attack against the avatar due to the defensive warding of the Armor Check, the avatar may immediately expend a reaction to swing with their attuned handheld weapon, channeling the flow of spiritual energy to strike at the attacker’s physical balance.

Commercial Markets and Commerce Outlets for Kava 427 of the Ancestral Veil
Herbal Apothecaries and Traditional Shamanic Weaveries
- These establishments are small, family-owned shops nestled within coastal settlements, harbor districts, or island market rows.
- The proprietors are specialized local weavers, herbalists, and potion crafters who operate independent family stalls rather than large commercial outlets.
- Acquisition occurs through direct bartering or purchase across the shop counter, where the craftsman evaluates the buyer and explains the proper maintenance of the braided kava root fibers.
- When selling to an NPC apothecary merchant, transactions follow standard haggling rules where the merchant adjusts their offer by 10% of the item’s baseline valuation multiplied by the character’s tier.
- The transaction proceeds are transmitted directly into the character’s account with the World Bank, accompanied by standard bookkeeping inquiries regarding the item’s source and previous owners.
- A player purchasing this item from an apothecary where they hold a recognized guild or faction standing receives a 10% discount off the item’s valuation per tier of their character.
- Standard suggested valuation for buying at an open apothecary: 50 silver coins to 80 silver coins (or equivalent in nickel or copper denominations).
- Standard merchant purchase price when selling: 5 silver to 8 silver per character tier, recorded and logged for state authority review.
Monastic Enclaves and Temple Trading Cloisters
- These locations are spiritual compounds, temple pavilions, or secluded monastery antechambers situated near teleportation circles or regional landmarks.
- The keepers are ritualists, monks, and ceremonial acolytes who craft ancestral items during specific astrological conjunctions or festival periods.
- Purchasing the headwear here involves formal roleplay exchanges where the buyer must demonstrate spiritual readiness, respect for ancestral traditions, and an understanding of the trance mechanics.
- Monastic sellers rarely offer direct cash buybacks for items brought to them; instead, they exchange the item for non-metal token currencies, credit toward temple services, or spiritual offerings.
- Guild members of affiliated spiritual orders gain access to consecrated variants of the headwear stored in clean extradimensional containers on-site.
- Standard suggested valuation for acquisition: 60 silver coins to 1 electrum (or 100 silver coins when acquired through high-demand island regions).
- Redemption or resale value in non-metal regional tender: 5 to 10 Drake Tokens, Shell Chits, or regional stamped tokens equivalent to the precious metal standard by weight.
Harbor Stalls, Port Caravans, and Smuggler Back-Alleys
- Located along busy wharf fronts, coastal state roadways, and maritime warehouses where foreign trade ships and regional zeppelins offload cargo.
- These merchants operate temporary stalls, wagon displays, and dockside counters, catering to travelers, mercenary crews, and adventuring parties seeking utility gear.
- Items bought here are subject to the local warlord’s city import and export taxes, ranging from 1% for passage to 3% for goods sold directly within the municipal walls.
- If purchased from an unaligned merchant or foreign trader who brought the item across ocean currents from the west, the pricing reflects the added transportation overhead.
- Standard suggested valuation for purchasing: 70 silver coins to 120 silver coins depending on regional availability and current shipping levies.
- Standard merchant purchase price when selling: 7 silver to 12 silver per character tier, with the transaction logged and taxed according to port authority mandates.
Underground Networks and Black-Market Fences
- These venues are hidden in dark alleyways, subterranean sewers, unmarked basement vaults, or remote encampments outside garrisoned military roadways.
- Black-market operators sell goods that are untracked, stolen, or stripped from fallen avatars without maintaining official merchant logs or reporting to tax assessors.
- Purchases here must be conducted strictly using physical metal coins such as gold, silver, electrum, or copper, completely bypassing the World Bank ledger system.
- Buyers cannot claim guild or faction discounts, and goods are sold at standard or inflated rates due to the dangerous nature of the trade.
- When selling to a black-market fence, the seller receives physical coin immediately without the standard World Bank 1% transaction fee or bureaucratic questioning.
- If a black-market buyer holds high interest in ancestral or ritual blindsight gear, they may offer up to twice the standard merchant rate in unrecorded physical currency.
- Standard black-market purchase cost: 100 silver coins to 15 gold coins (or equivalent physical precious metal).
- Standard black-market buyback price offered to sellers: 10 silver to 20 silver per character tier in raw coin, rising higher if the fence has an immediate client seeking sensory gear.
Environmental Combat Applications and Roleplay Methodologies for Kava 427 of the Ancestral Veil
Dense Subterranean Caverns and Unlit Underground Labyrinths
- In deep subterranean caverns where light cannot penetrate, an avatar donning the woven kava headwear embraces the complete absence of physical illumination rather than struggling against it.
- Defensive Roleplay: While traversing stalactite-choked corridors or uneven cave floors, the avatar relies on acoustic echoes bouncing off stone faces, detecting concealed pit traps, sudden drops, or creeping arachnids descending from ceilings within the 15-foot blindsight radius without holding a torch that would give away the party’s tactical position.
- Offensive Roleplay: In total darkness, the avatar maneuvers around stalagmites without penalty, closing distance against subterranean predators that depend on bioluminescence or darkvision, landing precision melee strikes with attuned weapons against targets that incorrectly assume their quarry is disoriented by the dark.
- When subterranean foes unleash flash-powder or radiant bursts intended to inflict the Blinded condition, the avatar remains entirely unaffected, calmly stepping forward through the flash to deliver counter-strikes while enemies are caught in the visual feedback of their own abilities.
Dense Swamps, Coastal Mangroves, and Muddy Bogs
- In thick wetland biomes where muddy waters obscure movement and dense foliage blocks line of sight, the headwear connects the avatar directly to the continuous damp earth.
- Defensive Roleplay: The avatar activates the Ancestral Chant, whispering rhythmic vocal cadences that resonate across the swamp floor to activate Tremorsense out to 30 feet, sensing the low vibrations of lurking crocodiles, submerged serpents, or encroaching raiders wading through shallow water before they can ambush the party.
- The earthen grounding within the root fibers prevents the avatar from slipping or losing footing on slick marsh grass, maintaining balance against sudden rushes from bog beasts that would normally knock an adventurer prone.
- Offensive Roleplay: Utilizing the blindsight radius, the avatar strikes straight through hanging moss, heavy reeds, and murky mist without suffering visual miss chances, driving spear or blade points accurately into the vital spots of concealed enemies who believe they are completely obscured by vegetation.
Industrial Steamworks, Factory Machine Floors, and Mana Engine Vaults
- Within the loud, dense atmospheres of industrial cities where steam pipes vent continuously and spinning gears fill the air with mechanical noise, the headwear filters visual confusion into distinct kinetic awareness.
- Defensive Roleplay: Massive plumes of blinding steam generated by combined elemental fire and water engines often obscure line of sight on factory floors, but the avatar navigates directly through the hot vapor without hesitation, dodging heavy moving piston shafts and tracking foes darting through the steam clouds.
- When exposed to minor steam scalds or concussive machine vibrations, the avatar takes a deep breath of the aromatic kava resin paste to engage the Numbing Draught, generating temporary health points that buffer incoming shock damage.
- Offensive Roleplay: In skirmishes occurring within engine rooms or steam-filled cargo bays of zeppelins, the avatar exploits the zero-visibility environment, cutting through the steam clouds to strike at enemy guards who are coughing, blinded, or suffering from the Blurred condition due to the heavy moisture.
Maritime Vessels, Stormy Open Decks, and Dense Sea Fog
- Aboard sailing vessels traversing open ocean currents or navigating through dense maritime fog banks where wind and spray blind normal sight, the ancestral fibers provide stability.
- Defensive Roleplay: When massive waves crash over the ship’s deck during sudden storms, the avatar remains anchored to the wooden planking, resisting displacement and using the Spiritual Disruption Riposte reaction to punish boarding pirates the moment their blade slides harmlessly off the avatar’s Armor Check.
- In heavy fog banks where enemy cutters attempt silent ambushes, the avatar stands on the bowsprit, detecting the physical mass and oar strokes of approaching boarding skiffs as soon as they enter sensory range.
- Offensive Roleplay: During deck-to-deck boarding actions in thick fog or rain squalls, the avatar moves unhindered across rigging and wet decking, targeting enemy crew members through the mist with accurate melee strikes while the opposing sailors struggle with visibility penalties.
Confined Urban Alleys and Crowded Nighttime City Districts
- Within the narrow cobblestone corridors of walled cities and busy market squares after dark, the item functions as a vital street-fighting tool.
- Defensive Roleplay: When navigating dark alleys subject to warlord patrols or cutpurse ambushes, the avatar avoids stepping into sight-dependent ambushes, detecting enemies lurking behind crates, around sharp brick corners, or atop low awning structures through spatial displacement and breathing rhythms.
- Offensive Roleplay: If an urban encounter breaks out, the avatar utilizes the tight confines of alleyways to corral foes within the 15-foot blindsight zone, ignoring smoke bombs, street dust, or visual illusions cast from spellbooks, and systematically disarming or incapacitating opponents through direct physical pressure.

Perception of Activation:
Five Senses
- Sight:
- User’s Perspective: Visual perception shifts instantaneously as the physical world goes pitch black beneath the woven band, replaced by a monochrome, translucent sphere of echolocation out to fifteen feet where physical masses, weapon arcs, and obstacles outline in sharp, silver-gray acoustic contours.
- Observer’s Perspective: The onlooker watches the wearer’s head snap into steady alignment as faint, ethereal violet runes begin to glow along the braided fibers of the blindfold, while the wearer moves with uncanny confidence despite having their physical eyes completely concealed.
- Positives: Total immunity to blinding flashes, gaze-based curses, visual darkness penalties, magical obscurement, and optical illusions within the acoustic radius.
- Negatives: Complete loss of color identification, inability to read written text, parchment, or standard maps, and an inability to perceive any visual activity occurring beyond fifteen feet.
- Hearing:
- User’s Perspective: Ambient audio amplifies with pristine clarity, separating distinct layers of sound such as the hiss of distant steam pipes, the subtle friction of cloth against leather armor, the sliding of boots on wet stone, and the inhalation pattern of nearby creatures.
- Observer’s Perspective: The onlooker hears a soft, low-frequency hum vibrating from the obsidian beads along the blindfold’s temples, accompanied by the subtle rustle of drying root fibers settling against the wearer’s skin.
- Positives: Unprecedented tactical awareness of concealed enemies, breathing rates, heartbeats, and stealthy flanking maneuvers within hearing range.
- Negatives: Heightened vulnerability to thunderous sonic concussions, loud industrial machinery clatter, or sudden piercing screams that can temporarily overwhelm acoustic tracking.
- Smell:
- User’s Perspective: The nostrils fill with a pungent, earthy bouquet of crushed piper methysticum roots, damp volcanic peat, and bitter resin paste, masking repulsive odors while heightening the scent signatures of sweat, blood, and ozone.
- Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within arm’s reach catches a noticeable drift of dry, peppery herbal spice and rich forest loamy earth wafting from the activated resin inside the band.
- Positives: Immediate detection of spilled alchemical reagents, blood trails, toxic sap, or concealed beast sweat within close quarters.
- Negatives: The dense, peppery aroma clinging to the headwear can make total scent-based concealment more difficult against sharp-nosed hunting beasts.
- Taste:
- User’s Perspective: A sudden, distinct bitterness washes over the back of the tongue, accompanied by a sharp, tingling numbness that spreads across the gums and throat, mimicking the sensation of a freshly downed bowl of ceremonial kava brew.
- Observer’s Perspective: The observer notes the wearer swallowing once with a slight tightening of the jaw as the physiological effects of the resin activate through skin absorption.
- Positives: The numbing sensation suppresses nausea, foul tastes, and minor oral discomfort, stabilizing the wearer’s concentration.
- Negatives: The persistent astringent flavor deadens normal taste perception, making it difficult to detect subtle flavors or identify potable liquids by mouth.
- Touch:
- User’s Perspective: A soothing, cool pressure wraps around the forehead and temples as the coarse hemp and smooth volcanic stone toggles tighten slightly against the skull, while a light, prickling warmth radiates through the skin to relax facial tension.
- Observer’s Perspective: The onlooker sees the woven root fibers flex and contour snugly against the user’s brow, the obsidian beads hanging motionlessly against the jawline as the wearer’s posture becomes grounded and unyielding.
- Positives: Physical grounding grants enhanced balance against knockdown effects, reduces the shock of blunt trauma, and alleviates tremors.
- Negatives: The tight fibrous weave creates slight skin irritation and sweat buildup across the brow during prolonged combat encounters.
Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Tremorsense and Ground Resonance:
- User’s Perspective: The avatar perceives subtle geometric ripples pulsing up through the soles of their footwear, translating subterranean shifts, crawling insects, and approaching footsteps into precise distance and mass coordinates along the ground plane.
- Observer’s Perspective: The observer sees the user effortlessly step over hidden roots, floor cracks, and pressure plates without looking down or pausing in their stride.
- Positives: Precise tracking of invisible, Burrowing, or obscured foes who are contacting the continuous ground surface out to extended ranges.
- Negatives: Airborne, floating, or incorporeal entities that do not touch the floor or wall surfaces cannot be pinpointed through ground resonance alone.
- Ancestral Echo Trance:
- User’s Perspective: The character’s mind receives faint impressions of ancestral muscle memory, feeling phantom tugs that guide weapon stances, defensive parries, and balance adjustments prior to incoming strikes.
- Observer’s Perspective: The avatar’s defensive actions appear fluid and pre-calculated, reacting to blind-spot attacks and rear swings as if guided by an unseen combat mentor standing at their back.
- Positives: Provides rapid reaction speeds, enhanced riposte timing, and psychological stability against fear-inducing phenomena.
- Negatives: The subtle cognitive bleed of ancient memories can cause brief moments of identity disorientation or fragmented focus immediately following intense battle.
- Arcane Weave Sensitivity:
- User’s Perspective: Magical items, charged crystals, and active conduits within close proximity register as warm, static currents brushing against the wearer’s consciousness, revealing the presence of magical power in the dark.
- Observer’s Perspective: The faint ultraviolet luminescence of the blindfold’s runes pulses brighter whenever the wearer turns their head toward a strong magical device or enchanted hazard.
- Positives: Passive detection of active magical gear, charged arcane batteries, and nearby conduits without needing physical line of sight.
- Negatives: Concentrated magical fields or wild magic storms can create buzzing psychic static across the avatar’s awareness, requiring active effort to filter out ambient interference.
Crafting Recipe: Ancestral Weave of the Sensory Trance
Materials Needed
- Two ounces of sun-cured piper methysticum root fibers harvested from coastal volcanic groves.
- One ounce of raw hemp cord spun from untreated swamp stalk.
- Four polished obsidian prayer beads drilled through the center.
- Two carved volcanic basalt toggles for strap fastening.
- One dram of distilled kava resin extract mixed with tree sap binding paste.
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized catalyst dropped from a magical creature or purchased through market outlets).
- Half an ounce of crushed luminescent lichen powder mixed with silver-reactive herbal ink for runic inscription.
Tools Required
- One fine bone carving needle for fiber interlacing.
- One fluid collector syringe used to extract and inject the sap binding paste into the weave.
- One stone mortar and basalt pestle for grinding the dried roots and resin into pliable paste.
- One jeweler’s scoring awl for carving ancestral runes into the center band and basalt toggles.
- One low-heat brazier or small steam-heated drying plate for setting the resin lining.
Skill Requirements
- Crafting (Weaving / Leatherworking): Level 5 or higher (plus 1 additional level corresponding to the targeted Tier 1 finished item).
- Alchemical Crafting (Herbalism / Distillation): Level 3 or higher to properly prepare the numbing resin without neutralizing active alkaloids.
- Runecraft / Arcane Inscription: Level 2 or higher to channel the somatic chant into the script across the brow piece.
Crafting Steps
- Fiber Preparation and Soaking:
- Take the cured piper methysticum roots and submerge them in warm elemental-steamed water for two hours until the tough fibers soften into flexible weaving strands.
- Separate the strands into three distinct cords, ensuring each maintains an even thickness to guarantee uniform structural resilience across the finished band.
- Braid Assembly and Structural Weave:
- Interlock the three softened root cords with the raw hemp thread using a tight seven-fold braid technique to create the main brow band.
- Thread two polished obsidian prayer beads onto each trailing side cord, positioning them so they will align flush against the wearer’s temples upon completion.
- Form the adjustable rear closure loops and secure the two carved volcanic basalt toggles into the ends using interlocking cross-stitches.
- Catalyst Infusion and Core Resonance:
- Place the Tier 1 Magic Crystal inside the stone mortar alongside the kava resin and tree sap binding paste.
- Grind the mixture under steady pressure until the magical crystalline matrix fractures and suspends evenly throughout the thick, dark resin.
- Draw the infused resin into the fluid collector syringe and inject the viscous paste along the interior seam of the braided blindfold, creating a padded contact lining that will rest against the avatar’s skin.
- Runic Etching and Inscription:
- Using the jeweler’s scoring awl, carve the ancestral sigils of spiritual sight across the outer face of the front eye-covering band.
- Fill the carved grooves with the luminescent lichen ink, blending it carefully into the fibers until the script absorbs the compound.
- Pass the headband over a low-heat drying brazier for twenty minutes to harden the resin lining and bond the runic ink into the root structure.
- Harmonization and Finishing Ritual:
- Hold the completed headwear in both hands and recite a somatic ancestral cadence for greater than six seconds to awaken the dormant magic within the crystalline resin.
- Check the weave for tension balance, verify that the herbal aroma wafts steadily from the lining, and roll a d20 to ensure no critical failure occurs during the structural settling phase.
First Sightless Shaman and Root of Great Cloud-Drift
In the times of early breath, when the great mother-goddess of the spherical stone did not yet finish arranging all walking things upon the dry salt-crust, there walked a hunter of the Lapita sea-edges named Vaelo. The translation of his old name in the tongue of the ancient mud means “He Who Watches the Fish Swim Through the Grass.” In those early turnings of the world, people did not possess the knowing of the inner pupil, nor did they understand how the power of thinking could be made to stay inside an object of wood or stone. The world was dark, and the great fire star Helios did make the sky hot, and the large gas-ball VaporSphere did cast shadows upon the mud every month of the darkness.
Vaelo was a man of the tribe who had many complaints from his elders because he could not shoot the flying birds when the thick sea-mist rolled over the beaches. When the white steam came out of the earth holes and met the cold ocean breath, all the men of the village became like stones without eyes. They stumbled into the thorn-bushes, they fell down the cliffs into the jagged black rocks, and the large crawling beasts with many fangs did eat their legs. The chief of the council of the seven hearths said to Vaelo: “If you cannot find the spotted pig in the white fog, you shall not receive the dried fish from the storage crypt, and you must sleep outside the palisade where the wild things howl.”
Vaelo was very sorrowful in his stomach. He walked far along the salt-marsh until his feet became brown and heavy with wet earth. He sat beneath a strange green bush whose roots went deep into the cracks of a black fire-mountain stone. The plant was bitter to smell, and its leaves shook even when the wind was not blowing. As the darkness week came upon the land and the sky-star was hidden by the great celestial roundness, Vaelo heard a noise like a small river flowing inside the dirt.
The voice was not a man’s voice, nor was it the voice of a bird. It was the heavy grinding sound of the root moving through the sand. The root spoke in the very old grammar of the first elements, which is hard to write down with straight marks on paper. The root said: “Why do you weep with the two water-holes in your face, small meat-creature? The two eyes in your head are only windows made of jelly. When the cloud closes the window, you become like a dead stick. You must drink the sleep of the earth, and you must cover the jelly so that the real world can strike your mind.”
Vaelo did not understand the grammar of the root, for the words were upside down, but his hunger was great and his pride was broken like a brittle shell. He took his sharp stone scraper and dug into the volcanic ground until his fingers were bleeding red water into the dirt. He pulled out the thickest root of the piper shrub, which was shaped like a twisted leg of an old lizard. He washed the dirt away in the salt tide, but the root remained bitter and hard.
He remembered the instructions that were sung by the grandmothers of the first people who fell from the purgatory sky: when a thing is too hard for the teeth, it must be beaten with two flat stones until it turns to mush. Vaelo took two heavy basalt rocks from the surf. He sat upon a flat table-stone and began to strike the root. With every strike of the stone, he spoke a line of the ancient chant of his grandfather’s grandfather, though he did not know what all the noises meant. He struck forty times. He struck seventy times. He struck until the dark sap of the root pooled upon the rock like sticky black honey.
As he chanted without stopping for greater than the time of six deep breaths, the spirit of the mountain became curious. A small glowing fly that carried the magic infection of the world landed upon the sticky pulp. The fly died in the bitterness, and its tiny crystal skeleton melted into the black sap, causing the paste to glow with the soft purple fire that belongs to the mother of the moon.
Vaelo took the bitter paste and smeared it upon his tongue. At once, his mouth became like cold stone. His tongue grew thick and silent, and a strange quietness spread through his chest like the cool water of a deep well. Then, because the sap burned his skin with a sweet prickling heat, he took long strips of the tough outer skin of the root and braided them together with wild marsh grass. He placed four dark volcanic stones upon the cords to keep them heavy, and he tied the thick band tightly across his face, covering both of his jelly-windows completely so that no ray of Helios or the burning stars could reach them.
The moment the knot was pulled tight behind his ears, the ancient chronicle says that Vaelo fell down upon the volcanic ash as if he had been struck by a war-club. His spirit did not leave his vessel, but the world of light vanished away like smoke from a doused campfire. In the great blackness of his mind, a new thing occurred that had never been written in the scrolls of the Lapita people.
He did not see the color of the grass or the yellow color of the sand. Instead, the whole island became a thing of ringing bells and vibrating strings. When a crab moved its little legs three hundred paces away upon the wet reef, Vaelo felt the tiny scrape of its shell against the rock inside the bones of his ankles. When the wind blew across the mountain, he did not feel cold; he saw the shape of the air rolling like a great blue snake over the trees. When a wild boar with four tusks stepped softly through the high ferns to eat him while he was lying down, Vaelo perceived the beast not as a shape of fur, but as a burning wheel of heartbeat and heavy breath that displaced the empty air within fifteen paces of his body.
The boar jumped forward with its sharp bone teeth to tear Vaelo’s throat. But Vaelo did not flinch, nor did he raise his hands to shield his face. Guided by the ancient muscle-trance that seeped from the root fibers into his skull-bone, he leaned his torso to the side by the width of a single reed. The tusks of the wild beast passed through the empty air where his neck had been. As the beast tumbled past him, Vaelo brought down his stone-headed spear without looking with eyes, striking the creature directly in the soft hollow behind its ear where life is tied to the body.
The great boar fell dead without making a second cry. Vaelo stood upon the dark sand in the deep mist, his eyes covered by the braided root, smelling the bitter resin and hearing the heartbeat of every fish that swam near the shore.
He picked up the heavy beast and carried it upon his back through the thickest white cloud that had ever rolled off the western ocean. He walked back to the village of the seven hearths. The people of the village were huddled inside their wooden huts, crying because they could not see their own fingers and feared the monsters of the fog would devour their children. They heard the heavy, steady step of boots coming through the gate.
When the chief opened the shutter of the hall, he saw Vaelo standing in the middle of the square with the huge boar upon his shoulders. The chief cried out: “Vaelo, how have you found your way through the great sea-smoke? Did you carry a torch of magical fat?”
Vaelo pointed to the dark fibrous cloth tied across his brow, where the purple runes were burning through the mist like cold sparks from an anvil. He said to the elders: “The eye of the body is a liar that runs away when the sun goes down. The root of the earth does not have eyes, yet it finds the water in the deepest dark. When you tie the memory of the root across your brow, the whole world becomes a drum, and your feet will always know where the drum-skin is struck.”
The elders were amazed and fearful. They tried to take the headband from Vaelo’s face to put it upon the chief, but when the chief tied it on without knowing the long song of seventy strikes, the headband only gave him a great ache in the head and made his mouth taste of swamp mud, for he had not ground the crystal into the resin nor had he fasted beneath the dark moon.
Thus, Vaelo remained the sightless guide of the Lapita people for forty years of long winters. When the great sea-monsters came up from the deep reefs in the middle of the dark night to smash the wooden canoes, Vaelo stood upon the rocks with his spear, laughing because the dark could not hide the splashing of their fins or the cold heat of their breath. When he grew very old and his first body was ready to dissolve into the purple sparks of the dead heroes, he took the braided root from his head and placed it inside a stone box lined with aromatic leaves so that another soul who knew the quietness of the root might wear it in the times of battle.
Moral of the Story
True perception is not found in the brightness of the light that strikes the outward face, but in the disciplined stillness that listens to the unseen movements of the earth when all false illumination is cast away.
