Lore: Forged in the sun-drenched trade archipelagos of Saṃsāra, this artifact was created by merchant-kahunas who blessed coastal markets and barter circles. Bound with the spirit of fair exchange and mercantile harmony, the pendant was given to young traders, peddlers, and envoys embarking on their first trade voyages. It ensures that transactions remain balanced, protecting the wearer from predatory exploitation while instilling a serene clarity during high-stakes bartering sessions.
Description
- The item appears as a pair of miniature, perfectly balanced brass scale pans inlaid with polished tiger’s eye gemstone, suspended from a fine copper chain.

Multiple Activable Magics
- Aura of Fair Trade: By using 1 Action to lift the miniature scales in open sight, the avatar unleashes an aura of commercial reason. Shops and Commerce for Kahuna 529 of the Haggler’s Scales (Venues and Transactions for the Item)
- Grand Bazaars, Merchant Exchanges, and Caravan Plazas: Situated in major trading hubs, port plazas, and indoor bazaars across Saṃsāra. These venues cater to merchant caravans, maritime traders, and traveling peddlers looking to secure fair rates and protect trade assets. Purchasing the scales involves negotiating with a guild quartermaster or senior merchant master. When selling the pendant here, the merchant evaluates the brass polish and tiger’s eye inlay, depositing the funds directly into the avatar’s World Bank account per standard mercantile protocol, reduced by 10% times the avatar’s tier level.
- Purchase Cost: 10 Silver (or 2 Electrum)
- Sale Payout: 9 Silver (deposited directly into the World Bank account for a Tier 1 avatar)
- Merchant Guild Outposts and Peddler Collectives: Located along active trade roads, border outposts, and guild-operated waystations. Guild members enjoy preferential pricing when trading in commercial aids and appraisal instruments. Accessing these stores requires active registration with a local or international Merchant Guild. Selling the item logs the transaction into the guild’s regional trade ledger.
- Purchase Cost with Guild Discount: 9 Silver (reflecting a 10% discount off the suggested 10 Silver base value for a Tier 1 member)
- Sale Payout to Guild Master: 9 Silver (transferred directly to the World Bank)
- Dockside Exchange Counters and Harbor Pawn Shops: Found along busy wharves, coastal fish markets, and island docks where maritime traders exchange raw commodities and local currencies. Buying the scales involves direct counter-haggling with independent brokers. Selling the pendant yields immediate physical coin, though local pawn brokers adjust their offers based on current market liquidity and regional supply.
- Purchase Cost: 11 Silver (or 1 Gold 1 Silver)
- Sale Payout: 8 Silver 5 Copper in physical coin
- Underground Smugglers’ Markets and Black-Market Fences: Tucked away in unpatrolled docks, subterranean vaults, or pirate-governed free ports. Fences deal in contraband, untaxed trade goods, and unregistered magical relics, operating strictly in cash. Transactions bypass the World Bank completely and require physical coin exchanged directly between parties.
- Purchase Cost: 15 Silver (or 1 Gold 5 Silver, due to black-market demand for appraisal and trade-balancing relics)
- Sale Payout: 10 Silver in physical gold coin (black-market buyers offer higher rates to acquire tools that assist in evaluating stolen merchandise and balancing illicit exchanges)
Roleplay Application of Kahuna 529 of the Haggler’s Scales Across Environments (Combat and Tactical Roleplay in Varied Environments)
- Crowded Spice Bazaars and Auction Houses: Within noisy, silk-canopied market squares, auction halls, and trading posts where merchants compete fiercely for rare goods.
- Defensive Roleplay: A ruthless merchant attempting to bully the avatar into an exorbitant price slams a heavy ledger onto the table while shouting threats of legal action. As the desk vibrates, the Mercantile Shield passive triggers. The tiger’s eye gemstone in the scale pans glows with a warm amber light, absorbing the shock of the physical display and forming a protective kinetic barrier around the avatar’s coin pouch and inventory manifests, keeping their funds completely safe from theft or seizure.
- Offensive Roleplay: Facing an unyielding broker who refuses to lower a artificially inflated price on essential provisions, the avatar activates Aura of Fair Trade. The player describes lifting the brass scales by their copper chain into plain view. A soothing amber illumination ripples across the stall, accompanied by the faint chime of shifting coins. The magic soothes the broker’s greed and stubborness, compelling them to enter a reasonable barter discussion.
- Wind-Swept Harbor Docks and Customs Checkpoints: Along ocean wharves, cargo docks, and fish markets slick with sea spray where sailors and traders exchange raw commodities.
- Defensive Roleplay: A corrupt harbor inspector tries to slice the straps of the avatar’s supply crate under the pretense of a “contraband search.” The Mercantile Shield absorbs the blade’s cut into a soft amber spark, preventing the crate’s bindings from snapping while the avatar’s Barter Instinct allows them to immediately spot and call out the inspector’s fraudulent dock fee ledger.
- Offensive Roleplay: Seeing a crewmate panic after being threatened with excessive port tariffs by dock guards, the avatar uses Equitable Resolve. The player taps the brass scale pans against the crewmate’s shoulder. The comforting chime of shifting coins echoes through the ally’s mind, instantly clearing their Dazed and Shaken status and giving them the composure to state their legal rights.
- Sun-Baked Desert Caravans and Oasis Markets: Across scorching trade highways, tent markets, and remote border waystations where travelers trade for survival.
- Defensive Roleplay: During a sudden raid by desert bandits trying to snatch trade satchels off camel saddles, a bandit’s dagger slashes toward the avatar’s hip. The Mercantile Shield converts the incoming blade strike into a harmless amber hum, protecting the avatar’s coin purse and barter goods from being cut loose or stolen mid-fight.
- Offensive Roleplay: Confronting a shady traveler at an oasis who is hoarding water supplies and demanding exorbitant prices from desperate refugees, the avatar activates Aura of Fair Trade. Raising the brass scales high, the player casts a warm amber glow over the campsite. The soothing aura dulls the traveler’s predatory instincts, opening a window to strike an equitable barter deal before violence breaks out.
- Subterranean Black Markets and Smugglers’ Vaults: Inside damp sewer vaults, hidden tavern cellars, and unpatrolled underground ruins where illicit trade occurs in darkness.
- Defensive Roleplay: A subterranean cutpurse attempts to slip a light-fingered hand into the avatar’s coat while pretending to examine a trade item. The shell’s Barter Instinct passive alerts the avatar to the cutpurse’s movement, while the Mercantile Shield deflects the subtle pickpocket attempt, keeping the avatar’s inventory untouched.
- Offensive Roleplay: When an ally is overwhelmed by fear after being cornered by black-market enforcers in a dim tunnel, the avatar uses Equitable Resolve. The player steps forward and taps the brass scales against the ally’s arm. The chiming coin sound echoes through the vault, instantly purging the ally’s Frightened state and boosting their focus for the upcoming negotiation or escape.

- Hearing: A pleasant, resonant metallic chime—resembling smooth gold and silver coins cascading across a wooden merchant’s counter—rings softly in the user’s ears.

- Taste: A mild, sweet taste like spiced honey tea and dry clove lingers pleasantly on the palate.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Mind’s Eye): The Mind’s Eye visualizes a glowing balance beam floating over trade goods, projecting real-time valuation metrics, profit margins, and commodity quality percentages directly into the user’s view.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Soul Sight): The avatar beholds a warm golden tether extending between themselves and prospective buyers, visually mapping the flow of commercial interest, greed, and sincerity.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Equity Sense): The user feels a subtle, rhythmic pulse against their consciousness whenever an opponent attempts to gouge prices, offer counterfeit coin, or break a verbal trade agreement.
Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Onlookers witness the miniature brass scale pans flare with a soft amber radiance, casting a warm golden light across the user’s hands, face, and nearby trade items.
- Hearing: Nearby merchants and companions hear a crisp, harmonic coin-clink chime accompanied by a soothing, low acoustic frequency.

- Extra-Sensory Perception (Empathy Sensing): Sense-attuned individuals experience an immediate drop in hostility and suspicion, feeling a sudden, soothing urge toward fair bartering and mutual compromise.
Positives
- Significantly enhances appraisal accuracy, barter negotiations, and detection of counterfeit currency or fraudulent contract terms.
- Instantly clears debilitating mental afflictions such as Frightened, Dazed, or Shaken in targeted allies.
- Projects a kinetic protective barrier that prevents coin pouches, barter goods, and trade ledgers from being stolen, damaged, or severed in chaotic encounters.
- Creates an atmosphere of mercantile trust, turning tense standoffs and price wars into peaceful, equitable transactions.
Negatives
- The warm amber flare and resonant coin-clink chime make secretive or stealthy activation virtually impossible in dim or quiet settings.
- The distinct aroma of spiced amber and brass polish can leave a noticeable scent trail for sharp-nosed trackers or guard beasts.
- Continuous reliance on the Mind’s Eye valuation overlay can lead to mild eye strain or temporary visual fatigue after the activation ends.
- The aura of strict commercial equity applies indiscriminately, making it equally difficult for the user or their party to ruthlessly exploit, scam, or intimidate merchants who are acting in good faith.
Crafting Recipe: Kahuna 529 of the Haggler’s Scales
Materials Needed
- 2 small cast Brass Scale Pans (carved and polished for the balance assembly)
- 2 cabochon-cut Tiger’s Eye Gemstones (set inside each scale pan as magic conduits)
- 1 strip of refined Copper Wire (drawn and coiled into a fine hanging chain)
- 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized catalyst to power the commercial balance matrix)
- 2 drams of Fluid Collector-harvested Tree Sap (hardwood resin to set the gemstones and bind the joints)
- 1 vial of enchanted Amber-Dust Ink (used to engrave the coin, palm frond, and trade-wind runes)
Tools Required
- Fine jeweler’s pliers, micro-saws, and brass-bending tools
- A specialized Hand-Held Attunement Workbench or Jeweler’s Anvil
- A Fluid Collector (for gathering pure tree sap resin during preparation)
- Precision wire-soldering iron and micro-engraving needles
- Fine polishing cloths and pumice powder
Skill Requirements
- Jewelry Crafting / Metalworking Skill: Level 6 or higher (Base skill 5 + 1 for Tier 1 crafting target)
- Magical Crafting / Rune Inscription Skill: Level 6 or higher
- Crafter Tier: Tier 1 Avatar or higher
Crafting Steps
- Preparing and Polishing the Pans: Cast and shape the two miniature brass scale pans, polishing them with pumice powder until they gleam with a warm luster. Drill mounting holes along the upper edges of each pan.
- Setting the Gemstones: Insert the two tiger’s eye cabochons into the centers of the brass pans, using tree sap resin to seal them securely into the bases.
- Assembling the Balance Beam and Chain: Form the central balance beam and connect the two brass pans using delicate, hand-coiled copper wire chains. Attach a top loop to the beam for the main neck chain.
- Inscribing the Trade Runes: Using micro-engraving needles, etch interlocking coins, palm fronds, and trade-wind motifs along the outer rims of the brass pans and the central beam. Fill the carved grooves with enchanted amber-dust ink.
- Embedding the Catalyst: Place the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into a hidden central housing on the balance beam, securing it with harvested tree sap resin.
- Sealing and Chain Binding: Coat the filigree connections and rune etchings with harvested tree sap resin to protect the metal against tarnish, wear, and corrosion. Attach a braided copper wire neck chain to the main balance loop.
- Final Attunement and Commercial Test: Place the completed pendant onto the attunement workbench and perform a 10-minute binding ritual. Channel 1 point of Mana into the crystal catalyst while tapping two brass coins against the scale pans. Roll a d20 to test matrix stability: a roll of 2 or higher successfully binds the bargaining properties to the pendant, while a roll of 1 warps the brass beam and shatters the gemstones.
Great Brass Scales of Balanced Grain
In the very old sun-cycles before the big stone walls were built around the cities of men, there did dwell in the sandy archipelago a man called Kahuna of the Fair Weight. He was not a warrior who did carry the long spear of black bone, nor did he possess forty leaping goats or ten fields of sweet yam, but his eyes were like the clear glass of the mountain pool that sees the small crab under the sand.
In those ancient cycles, the people of the coastal trade circles did have much anger and dirty tricks in their hearts. When a man from the high hills did bring three baskets of dry flour to the beach to exchange for two jars of sweet lamp-oil, the beach-trader would lift his hand and scream with a big mouth, “Nay! Thy flour is full of gray dust and small stones! I shall give thee only one half of a cup of oil!” And so the hill-man would carry his heavy flour back up the mountain with tears upon his face, while the beach-trader did laugh into his beard and drink sweet wine. There was much fighting with heavy sticks and many men did pull their copper knives over the price of a single bundle of dry wood.
The Great Chief of the Island Union called Kahuna to his mat of woven grass and spoke with a big wind from his nose: “O Kahuna, the market of my coconut groves is become like a pit of snapping dogs! The strong traders do take the corn from the weak children, and the men of the docks do give lead coins painted like yellow gold! Make for me a thing that measures the true weight of the corn and the fish, or I shall make thee smash heavy rocks into small sand until thy fingers are flat like leaves!”
Kahuna walked along the hot coral reef for seven suns and seven moons where the sea-water meets the warm air. He looked into the shallow pools where the small fish do play. There he found two round stones of tiger’s eye, smooth like the skin of the mango fruit and shining with the golden light of the midday sun.
Kahuna carried the yellow-brown stones unto his small palm-leaf hut. He took also a piece of shining brass metal from the burning furnace and thin wire drawn from the mountain copper. He sat upon a flat stone for seven days and hammered the brass into two small round dishes. He set the tiger’s eye stones into the bottoms of the brass dishes like the yolk is set inside the bird’s egg. He wrapped the copper wire around the brass beam like the creeping vine wraps around the coconut tree. He spoke the ancient words of the tide-spirits, which are translated poorly into our old books as: “O Scales of the Great Sea, let the grain be weighed with the straight hand, but do not let the hearts of the buyer and the seller burn with the red fire of greed!”
He lifted the small brass scales by the copper chain and did strike two small brass tokens against the dishes.
Chime-clink-ring!
A warm amber light like the burning lamp came out from the tiger’s eye stones! It was not a hot fire that scorches the hand, but a gentle warmness like the morning sun upon the cold shoulder. The light did spread across the wooden market counter like sweet palm syrup pouring from a clay jug.
Kahuna walked into the grand trade plaza where a cunning merchant was trying to sell a basket of wet, heavy sand to a poor widow for three silver rings, claiming the basket was full of rare spice-salt. Kahuna did step between them and held the brass scales high in his right hand. He did tap the copper wire against the brass rim.
Chime-clink-ring!
Lo! The warm amber light did fall upon the basket of wet sand! The sand did show its cheap gray color to all the standing people, and the three silver rings in the widow’s hand did shine with their true mark! The cunning merchant did drop his head with great shame in his neck, and the poor widow did weep with great joy in her eyes. The crowd of people did clap their hands with loud noise, shouting, “The scales of Kahuna see through the mud like the hawk sees through the air!”
For sixty summers, Kahuna walked from the high mountain markets to the deep harbor docks. Whenever two chiefs or two peddlers did sit upon the grass to trade ten canoes for twenty cows, Kahuna did hang the brass scales upon a tree branch above their heads. The bad greed in their bellies did grow quiet, the lies did vanish like smoke into the sky, and both sides did shake hands with big laughter, taking home their fair share without any blood upon the grass.
When Kahuna became very old and his back was bent like the hunting bow, he gave the brass scales to his nephew, who was called Kahuna the Reckoner. But the ancient translation says that the nephew was foolish and had a heart full of narrow thoughts. He took the brass scales into the secret storehouse of a pirate captain, wanting to use the scales to force the captain to give him nine parts of ten from a stolen chest of pearls, leaving only one small part for the men of the ship.
When the foolish nephew did lift the scales inside the dark wooden room, the tiger’s eye stones did not give the sweet amber honey-light. It made a terrible sound like a falling cart of bronze cooking pots! CLATTER-BANG-SHATTER! The pirate captain and his thirty fierce sailors did wake up from their sleep with big iron cutlasses in their hands! The nephew was forced to jump out of the high window into the ocean without his coat, and the brass scales slipped from his shaking fingers, sinking into the deep mud of the harbor floor.
Many hundreds of winters passed while the scales lay buried in the black slime, until a coral-diver did scoop them up in his net during a great storm. The scales were polished with oil and sold to the Big Vaults of the Merchant Guilds, where the scribes recorded their power upon the sheep-skin scrolls. But all who barter upon the shores of Saṃsāra still tell the story of the brass scales of Kahuna that make the trade straight and the satchel secure.
Moral of the Story: He who uses the balance of equity to share the harvest fairly with his brother shall walk in peace and keep his house full, but he who turns the tool of measure into an engine of avarice shall rouse the swords of his neighbors and jump naked into the cold sea.
