Lore
Created during the early celestial cartography boom on the island continent of Magdalenian, this item was developed by an Isekai star-farer who combined ancient Japanese Jumon incantations with local astral alignment magic. In the realm of Saṃsāra, where vessels and travelers cross uncharted planar voids and vast oceanic expanses, calculating accurate trajectories is vital. The crafter realized that vocalizing precise, rhythmic chants while channeling ambient starlight could realign a traveler’s innate sense of direction. Designed specifically for Tier 1 navigators and pilots, the brass astrolabe allows fledgling astrogators to read celestial paths and plot safe courses through chaotic dimensional currents without expensive observatory equipment.
Description
This item is a compact, intricately engraved brass astrolabe attached to a heavy silver chain, designed to be worn resting against the center of the chest. The outer ring features finely etched Japanese kanji detailing celestial coordinates and zodiacal signs, while the inner rotating plate consists of layered lapis lazuli dotted with tiny, glowing silver studs that mirror real-time star constellations. At the center sits a small, faceted clear quartz crystal. Whenever an incantation is vocalized, the lapis plate rotates smoothly on its own, and the silver studs pulse with a soft, steady starlight radiance.

Commerce and Acquisition of the Starlight Astrolabe
Trading in celestial navigation aids and astrogation tools like the Jumon 512 of the Starlight Astrolabe occurs through specialized maritime, aerial, and astronomical commercial channels across Saṃsāra. With no global retail networks, transactions are handled locally through guild Outfitters, port cartographers, planetary observatories, and private trade bazaars.
Sellers dictate market terms under the “buyer beware” tradition of Saṃsāra. Prices fluctuate based on regional access to precision brasscraft, proximity to star-navigable waterways, municipal tariffs, and character tier.
- Naval Guildhalls and Port Outfitters: Located along busy coastal harbors, island archipelago hubs, and airship docks in major capital cities, these outfitters serve captains, pilots, and ocean explorers. The proprietors are veteran navigators who value reliable directional gear. A Tier 1 avatar can buy the astrolabe here at its standard base price of 10 silver pieces (1 gold piece). When a Tier 1 avatar sells the item to a port outfitter, the merchant applies the standard 10% reduction per tier level of the seller, depositing 9 silver pieces directly into the avatar’s World Bank account. Avatars holding active credentials with the Local Navigators’ Guild or Sea-Farers’ Faction receive a 10% discount per tier level of the selling merchant, dropping the purchase price to 9 silver pieces.
- Observatory Bazaars and Academy Stalls: Found within university districts, high-altitude mountain observatories, and star-gazer towers, these vendors cater to scholars, celestial mages, and planetary mappers. Because precision lapis lazuli and quartz lenses are crafted on-site, inventory is reliable. These stalls sell the astrolabe at its base price of 10 silver pieces. Selling to academic merchants follows standard World Bank processing minus the 10% Tier 1 haggling deduction, netting the seller 9 silver pieces.
- Caravan Bazaars and Desert Trade Hubs: Located in landlocked trade cities and sprawling desert oases where overland orientation across trackless dunes is vital, demand for directional gear is high. Import tariffs of 5% and local transit taxes of 3% drive up retail costs. Merchants in these bazaars typically list the astrolabe for 11 to 12 silver pieces. Selling the item here yields the standard 9 silver pieces through the World Bank system.
- Black-Market Smugglers and Unregistered Fences: Tucked away in underground pirate coves, lawless docks, or uncharted floating sky-halls, smuggler fences deal in un-logged, stolen, or untaxed navigational instruments. These dealers bypass the World Bank entirely, operating solely in hard physical currency. Buying the Jumon 512 from a black-market fence costs 13 to 16 silver pieces in physical coin. However, if an avatar sells an un-registered astrolabe to a fence with an immediate buyer needing an off-the-books navigation device, the fence may pay well above market rate, offering up to 18 silver pieces in physical coin on the spot.
Tactical Roleplay Applications: Astrogation and Celestial Trajectory
The Jumon 512 of the Starlight Astrolabe acts as both a precision orientation tool and an orbital deflection device, translating vocalized spiritual incantations into real-time spatial cartography and protective gravitational fields. How an avatar utilizes this necklace-slotted astrolabe changes based on the surrounding environment, balancing navigational foresight with reactive trajectory defense.
Open Ocean and Storm-Tossed Seas
On the featureless expanse of the open ocean or amidst pitch-black squalls where landmarks do not exist, positioning is difficult to calculate and shipboard combat relies heavily on ranged trajectory adjustments.
- Defensive Usage: When caught on an exposed ship deck under fire from enemy ballistae or naval archers, the avatar utters a sharp Jumon verse to activate Chanted Deflective Orbit. The central quartz crystal flares with a sudden burst of starlight gravity, distorting the air around the wearer’s torso and causing incoming arrows or heavy crossbow bolts to drift off target, applying the +2 AC bonus to evade naval projectiles.
- Offensive Usage: In fog-bound waters or during night operations, the avatar chants the Jumon Incantation of Celestial Charting, projecting a 10-foot 3D holographic star map over the vessel’s wheelhouse. The player roleplays reading the real-time planetary projections to calculate wave trajectories, spot hidden coral reefs, and direct siege fire or boarding ramps precisely into the enemy vessel’s flank.
Endless Sand Dunes and Trackless Deserts
Across vast desert wastes where shifting sands erase landmarks and heat haze warps visual distance, thermal disorientation and ambushes from beneath the sand are constant threats.
- Defensive Usage: When sand-burrowing beasts or dune skirmishers strike from hidden positions beneath the earth, the avatar relies on True North Alignment to prevent panic and maintain absolute orientation. If a spear or claw thrust comes from an unexpected angle out of the dust storm, a quick reaction chant triggers the deflective orbit, bending the attack away from vital organs.
- Offensive Usage: Facing shifting topography and featureless dunes, the avatar uses the Jumon Incantation of Celestial Charting to project a holographic topographic elevation grid around the party. The player roleplays identifying hidden depression zones, tracking thermal wind currents, and plotting an optimal path to flank enemy encampments without alerting their lookouts.
Deep Space Voids and Planar Sky-Lanes
Navigating the airless voids between worlds, floating sky-island archipelagos, or chaotic dimensional rifts requires instant calculations of gravity wells and pitch angle.
- Defensive Usage: In low-gravity or zero-gravity void combat where dodging by foot is impossible, the avatar activates Chanted Deflective Orbit. The momentary pulse of gravitational starlight creates an artificial repelling field around the wearer, nudging stray space debris, kinetic shrapnel, or hostile energy darts off course.
- Offensive Usage: Navigating complex 3D sky-lanes or planar rifts, the avatar chants the celestial mapping Jumon while holding the astrolabe high. The projected starlight map displays gravitational well vectors and atmospheric density layers, allowing the player to call out precise intercept vectors for allies, calculate drop trajectories onto enemy sky-vessels, or guide the party safely through spatial anomalies.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- Sight: The central clear quartz crystal flashes with brilliant white-blue light, and the lapis lazuli plate begins to spin in smooth, silent revolutions. Tiny silver studs representing constellations flare like miniature suns, projecting a glowing, translucent 3D holographic star map across the user’s field of view.
- Sound: A soft, metallic click echoes as the brass gearwork unlocks, followed by a faint, soothing hum that rises in pitch in harmony with the user’s vocal chant. A light wind rustles past the ears as air pressure shifts around the astrolabe.
- Touch: A sudden pulse of warmth spreads through the brass plating against the upper chest. When the orbital barrier activates, a gentle micro-gravitational pull tugs outward from the solar plexus, creating a feeling of weightlessness across the torso.
- Smell: A crisp scent of crisp night air, sea spray, and hot polished brass fills the nose.
- Taste: A faint, cool minty sensation sits on the roof of the mouth alongside a dry taste of ozone.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions: The user feels an immediate expansion of spatial awareness, as if their mind is tethered directly to the movement of distant stars. They perceive invisible gravitational vectors, atmospheric currents, and cardinal axes as tangible geometric lines floating in space.
- Positives: Provides absolute directional certainty, real-time spatial navigation, and immediate physical protection against projectile impact without obscuring ambient vision.
- Negatives: The sudden flood of celestial coordinates and gravitational feedback can cause momentary vertigo or sea-sickness if activated while moving at high speeds.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Sight: Spectators see the brass astrolabe leap to life, its inner rings spinning rapidly as the clear quartz emits a blinding beam of starlight. A floating web of blue and silver geometric lines erupts 10 feet around the user. During the reaction phase, a shimmering orb of gravitational light forms around the wearer’s torso, bending light and deflecting incoming physical objects.
- Sound: Witnesses hear the user recite a clear, rhythmic Jumon chant, accompanied by the mechanical spinning of brass rings and a sharp, humming pop when the orbital barrier expands.
- Touch: Nearby allies feel a sudden, soft gust of wind push outward from the astrolabe, accompanied by a faint prickle of static electricity on exposed skin.
- Smell: Those standing nearby catch a clean, high-altitude ozone smell drifting on a sudden warm draft.
- Taste: Onlookers close to the device experience a faint, lingering static metallic taste in the air upon deep inhalation.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions: Spiritually attuned observers perceive a sweeping aura of starlight aligning the user’s soul with the night sky, creating a glowing cosmic signature that stands out starkly against the surrounding environment.
- Positives: Gives team members a clear, highly accurate 3D map to coordinate tactical movements and alerts them visually to active gravitational defenses.
- Negatives: The brilliant flare of starlight and broad holographic projection act as a glowing beacon, instantly revealing the navigator’s position in dark or obscured environments.

Materials Needed
- Tier 1 Magic Quartz Crystal (Clear, Faceted): 1 crystal (serves as the primary focal lens for gravitational deflection and star-light projection).
- Engraved Brass Plate & Rings: 6 ounces (used to forge the main outer ring, chassis, and rotating astrolabe framework).
- Lapis Lazuli Disc: 1 solid disc (forms the rotating sky plate, inlaid with silver filings).
- Sterling Silver Wire & Chain: 2 ounces (used for the neck chain, internal studs, and etched kanji celestial tracery).
- Alchemical Celestial Ink: 1 vial (a glowing compound of ground lapis, moon-powder, and starlight resin).
Tools Required
- Jeweler’s Lathe & Precision Chisels: For turning, smoothing, and true-balancing the brass rings and lapis lazuli disc.
- Fine Engraving Burrs & Stylus: For etching tiny kanji characters, zodiacal marks, and celestial degree rings into the brass casing.
- Gem-Setting Bezel Mandrel: For locking the clear quartz crystal securely into the central hub.
- Alchemical UV Setting Lamp: For curing the celestial ink into the engraved zodiacal channels.
- Tuning Fork (E-Note / Starlight Pitch): Used to calibrate the harmonic resonance of the brass rings with vocal Jumon chants.
Skill Requirements
- Jewelry Crafting / Metalworking Skill Level: Minimum Level 6 (Requires Skill Level 5 base + 1 additional level for Tier 1 output).
- Astrogation / Celestial Arcana Skill Level: Minimum Level 6.
Crafting Steps
- Forming and True-Balancing the Chassis: Turn the brass plate on the jeweler’s lathe to create the outer ring, chassis, and inner housing. Ensure perfect circular symmetry so the inner rings can rotate without friction.
- Inlaying the Lapis Lazuli Sky Plate: Cut and polish the lapis lazuli disc to fit within the secondary brass housing. Drill micro-holes into the lapis and insert tiny sterling silver studs to mirror real-time star constellations.
- Engraving the Kanji and Zodiac Markers: Using the fine engraving stylus, carve the specific Jumon astrogation characters along the outer brass ring and inner track. Fill the etched channels with alchemical celestial ink and cure under the UV setting lamp.
- Setting the Central Quartz Lens: Mount the clear Tier 1 Magic Quartz Crystal into the central brass bezel. Secure it flush over the lapis disc so light projects cleanly through the core.
- Assembling the Rotating Rings and Chain: Interlock the brass rings and lapis plate using silver pivot pins. Attach the heavy sterling silver chain to the top loop of the outer ring for chest mounting.
- Harmonic and Celestial Calibration: Hold the completed astrolabe under an open night sky, strike the tuning fork, and recite a low-frequency Jumon navigation chant for one full minute. Adjust the ring friction until the lapis plate spins freely in response to the vocalization.
Brass Wheel and Falling Star
In the years before the ocean became salty, when the land of Saṃsāra was still as soft as baked bread and the sky had no roads, there lived upon the high windy cliffs of Magdalenian a walker of empty spaces whose name is set down in the crumbled brick as the Line-Drawer of the Sea-Hole.
It is recorded in the dark ink of the fifth dynasty that this Line-Drawer possessed no grand ships of iron, nor did he hold the golden keys of the sky-palaces. He was a low traveler of the first rank, a Tier 1 soul reborn out of the great sky-void from a far-off world where men traveled inside metal beetles. His pockets were empty of gold, and his shoes were made of dry palm leaves tied with string.
In those ancient times, the wide salt-water and the endless sand-deserts were full of bad spirits and shifting mist. The captains of the wooden boats and the riders of the long-necked camels would go out into the blue water and never come back to their wives, for the sky had no signs and the stars would dance in circles to trick the eyes of men. Many small souls were lost in the wet dark, eating their own leather belts before the water-dragons swallowed their bones.
The Line-Drawer sat upon a flat rock for eighty-eight sunsets, holding in his right palm a piece of clear rock-glass that had fallen from a burning cloud in the night. He spoke to his liver, as the ancient translation roughly says: “Why must the foot walk into the big empty when the eye does not know where the sun goes to sleep? A man who sails his boat without a string to the sky is a fish who has agreed to be fried in the pan.”
On the eighty-ninth morning, when the silver stars were still hanging like small fruit from the sky-branches, a singing scholar of the high paths came down the rocky riverbed. This man was a reciter of the Jumon—the secret words of the spirit-breath that make the compass-needle stand straight and the wind become cold. He carried a disc of blue lapis stone that smelled of the deep sea.
When the singer began to chant his Jumon, the clear stone in the Line-Drawer’s hand began to spit blue fire like a small star caught in a net. The brass rings on the scholar’s pouch began to spin without hands, and the Line-Drawer felt his head become light, as if his mind were standing upon the highest mast of a great ship, looking down upon the whole round world.
“Lo,” said the Line-Drawer of the Sea-Hole, in the heavy syntax of the old clay writer, “the voice of the spirit-song is a brass rope that ties the ship to the middle of the sky!”
For four long dry seasons, the Line-Drawer and the singing scholar sat inside a hollow tree near the salt-marsh. They took heavy pieces of brass metal, beaten thin with round river-stones, and forged them into circles that fit inside circles, so that one ring could turn while the other stood still. In the middle of the brass wheel, they glued the blue lapis disc, and upon it they set tiny seeds of real silver to show where the sky-bull and the sky-fish walk at night. At the center of all things, they locked the clear rock-glass stone.
Along the outer brass edge, the scholar used a bone needle to scratch many crooked signs—the Jumon 512 of the Star-Path—filling the scratches with the blue blood of crushed sea-shells and star-dust. They hung the brass wheel from a heavy silver rope so it might sit against the heart-place of a traveler.
In the old writing, this item is named Jumon 512, but the low sailors of the mud-ports called it The Eye that Finds the Shore.
The great trial of the wheel came when the Red Captain of the Black Fleet attempted to cross the Sea of Forgotten Smoke. The smoke was thick like cow’s milk, and no man could see his own thumb when held before his nose. Three ships had already gone into the white smoke and turned into driftwood upon the hidden tooth-rocks.
The Line-Drawer hung the brass astrolabe upon his chest. He did not look at the water, nor did he throw wood-chips into the tide to guess the current. He stood at the front of the boat, held the brass wheel in his two palms, and vocalized the short Jumon of Celestial Charting, as the scholar had written upon his mind.
The ancient translation records the great magic with clumsy and grand words:
“The clear glass at the heart of the brass wheel did burst into a blue sun! Out from the silver seeds came a light like many small fire-bugs, floating upon the foggy air! The stars of the high sky, which were hidden behind the black clouds, came down and drew themselves in lines of blue thread ten cubits around the head of the Line-Drawer! The sky map showed the deep water like a clear path and the hidden tooth-rocks like sharp teeth in an open mouth!”
The Line-Drawer called out to the man at the wood-rudder: “Turn the big wood three fingers to the left, for a sharp rock sits beneath the water like a sleeping pig! Keep the bow pointed toward the shoulder of the sky-goat!”
Thus, the five ships of the fleet passed through the Sea of Forgotten Smoke without scratching their wooden bellies. When a sudden sea-monster reached out from the black water to smash the deck with its long arm, the Line-Drawer shouted a fast, single-word Jumon. A circle of heavy sky-gravity flared out from the quartz stone, and the monster’s strike was pushed sideways, splashing harmlessly into the foam without breaking a single mast.
The Red Captain fell upon his knees and gave the Line-Drawer three sacks of dried fish and a ring of gold wire. In the years that followed, the metal-smiths of the coastal cities made many copies of the brass wheel, so that even the most foolish Tier 1 navigators might find their way back home when the stars go dark.
Moral of the Story: The traveler who measures his course by the eternal order of the sky shall never be lost in the transient mists of the earth.
