Lore

Forged during the late Renaissance era on the island continent of Magdalenian, this item was created by an Isekai artisan who sought to align traditional Japanese Jumon chants with the vast, otherworldly energies of the Astral Plane. In Saṃsāra, where reincarnated souls cross dimensional divides to inhabit avatars, the crafter discovered that vocalizing specific incantations could momentarily loosen an avatar’s consciousness from its physical vessel. By weaving ethereal threads into an ornate brow band, the artisan created a tool for Tier 1 initiates seeking to extend their awareness beyond physical constraints without risking full soul detachment.

Description

This item takes the form of a slender, polished silver headband lined with soft velvet along the interior. At the center rests a small, oval-shaped crystal that glows with a faint, iridescent violet hue. Fine silver wires radiate outward from the central stone, forming delicate spiraling patterns etched with tiny kanji characters. Hanging from the sides are two small, teardrop-shaped silver pendants that sway with the wearer’s movement, emitting a subtle, harmonic hum whenever an incantation is vocalized.

Commerce and Acquisition of the Astral Weaver

Trade involving specialized mental and planar accessories like the Jumon 304 of the Astral Weaver operates within the unique commercial structures of Saṃsāra. Because there are no global retail chains or online networks, transactions occur exclusively through family-owned shops, regional guildhalls, academic outfitter stalls, and illicit trade dens.

Because Saṃsāra functions strictly on a seller’s market under the principle of “buyer beware,” prices are not globally fixed. The cost of this headband varies based on local availability, municipal border taxes, guild affiliations, and the tier of the character buying or selling.

  • Academic Guildhalls and Arcane Apothecaries: Situated near major libraries, schools, and temple complexes in large state or Central Capital cities, these shops cater directly to scholars, technomancers, and rising adventurers. Proprietors are experienced practitioners who understand the mental value of the item. When a Tier 1 avatar purchases the headband here, it is listed at its standard base price of 10 silver pieces (equivalent to 1 gold piece). If a Tier 1 avatar sells the headband to an academic merchant, standard haggling rules apply: the merchant reduces the payout by 10% per tier level of the seller (a 10% reduction for a Tier 1 seller), resulting in a payout of 9 silver pieces deposited directly into the character’s World Bank account. If the buying avatar holds active membership in the local Scholars’ Guild or Arcane Faction, they receive a guild discount of 10% per tier level of the selling merchant, reducing the purchase price to 9 silver pieces.
  • Central City Trade Plazas: Located along high-volume roadways near landlocked capital districts, these independent stalls sell secondary market gear transported across state lines. Because state import taxes of 5% and municipal sales taxes of 3% are factored into the vendor’s overhead, prices run slightly higher. Merchants in these plazas typically list the headband for 11 to 12 silver pieces. Selling the item to these vendors processes payment through the World Bank system, minus the standard 10% Tier 1 haggling deduction, netting the seller 9 silver pieces.
  • Seaport Divination Outfitters: Situated in coastal port cities where maritime navigators and planar scouts purchase specialized sight tools, these shops offer gear tailored for long-distance perception. In port cities with abundant silvercrafting, the item sells for 10 silver pieces. In remote island ports where imported sterling silver and fine crystals are scarce, vendors take advantage of the seller’s market to demand 14 to 18 silver pieces from buyers.
  • Black-Market Dens and Mind-Fences: Hidden within subterranean caverns or shadowed back-alleys, black-market vendors deal in non-registered, untaxed, or stolen gear. These transactions bypass the World Bank entirely and operate solely in physical precious metals (hard gold and silver coins). Purchasing the Jumon 304 from a black-market fence always costs full price or higher, requiring 12 to 15 silver pieces in physical coin. Conversely, if an avatar sells a stolen or un-logged headband to a fence who has an immediate buyer seeking scrying tools, the fence may pay up to double the standard merchant rate, providing up to 18 silver pieces in physical coin on the spot.

Tactical Roleplay Applications: Astral Projection and Spatial Awareness

The Jumon 304 of the Astral Weaver functions as a refined sensory and phased-shifting apparatus, converting vocalized spiritual chants into remote ethereal vision and temporary physical displacement. How an avatar utilizes this headwear-slotted headband adapts according to the surrounding environment, balancing cautious reconnaissance with reactive defense.

Dense Urban District and Narrow Alleyways

In crowded capital bazaars, multi-story tenements, and narrow stone back-streets, line-of-sight is frequently blocked by architecture and ambush risks are high.

  • Defensive Usage: When cornered in a blind alley or navigating suspected territory, the avatar speaks a single-word Jumon verse to activate the Chanted Phase Barrier. The central violet crystal flares as the user’s upper torso momentarily shifts out of phase with the physical plane. This allows incoming blade thrusts or thrown daggers to pass harmlessly through a semi-translucent void, applying the +2 AC bonus to evade urban ambushes.
  • Offensive Usage: Before pushing into an enclosed building or around a dangerous street corner, the avatar chants a short somatic ritual while leaning against a wall. Utilizing Jumon Incantation of Spatial Scouting, the player projects an intangible astral eye up to 30 feet away, sending it around corners or through high windows to scout guard positions, locate hidden doors, or mark target vulnerabilities without exposing their physical body.

Dense Ancient Forests and Overgrown Ruins

Under the thick canopy of ancient woodlands or within moss-covered stone ruins, natural foliage and verticality obscure threats coming from above and below.

  • Defensive Usage: When attacked by treetop archers or drop-predators leaping from high branches, the avatar relies on the passive Ethereal Sight Alignment to spot spiritual ripples and movement through the leaves. If an arrow flies from the canopy, a quick reaction chant triggers the phased barrier, causing the projectile to slice through the avatar’s shoulder without transferring kinetic force.
  • Offensive Usage: In dense terrain where ground movement is slow and noisy, the avatar projects the astral scouting eye up into the high canopy or over ruined stone walls. From this elevated vantage point, the user tracks fleeing targets or directs party members toward optimal ambush points, bypassing natural obstacles and visual cover completely.

Echoing Subterranean Caverns and Vaults

Inside damp underground tunnels, ancient tombs, and echo-filled stone dungeons, danger often lurks behind sealed doors or within pitch-black side shafts.

  • Defensive Usage: In tight corridors where dodging is restricted, the avatar utilizes Mind Anchor to maintain focus despite disorienting psychic wails or subterranean illusion traps. When physical hazards like falling masonry or spring-loaded wall traps trigger, the phase barrier allows the avatar to momentarily slip out of alignment with the crushing stone.
  • Offensive Usage: Facing sealed vault doors or iron-grate barriers, the avatar uses the Jumon Incantation of Spatial Scouting to pass the intangible astral sensor through small keyholes, drainage pipes, or door gaps. The player roleplays describing the room beyond—identifying levers, counting enemy guards, or discovering hidden treasures—allowing the group to form a precise strategy before breaching the area.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Sight: The inner rim of vision shifts slightly toward a cool violet hue as the oval crystal atop the brow glows with intense iridescent light. Etched silver kanji along the spiraling wireframe flare in rapid sequence. When projecting, the physical field of view dims to a translucent haze while a crisp, elevated secondary perspective opens in the mind’s eye.
    • Sound: A soft, high-pitched ringing vibration echoes through the skull, accompanied by the gentle, rhythmic sway and harmonic chime of the teardrop pendants brushing against the ears. Physical sounds become muffled, as if submerged in water.
    • Touch: A cool, soothing prickle spreads across the forehead beneath the velvet lining, followed by a light sensation of weightlessness at the crown of the head as physical spatial awareness thins.
    • Smell: A sharp, dry scent of ionized air and silver polish fills the nostrils, paired with the faint aroma of dried lotus blossoms.
    • Taste: A crisp, metallic tang resembling copper or cold rainwater sits on the back of the tongue as the vocal chant completes.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions: The user senses the boundaries of their consciousness stretching beyond the skull. They feel the tether between their soul and physical form lengthen, granting a panoramic awareness of surrounding energy currents, ley lines, and intangible presences.
    • Positives: Grants unmatched tactical awareness and remote reconnaissance capabilities without physical exposure, alongside an immediate sense of mental clarity and poise.
    • Negatives: While projecting, the physical body remains partially ungrounded and dull to immediate tactile warnings, leaving the user vulnerable to stealthy physical contact.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Sight: Witnesses see the oval crystal on the headband burst into a shimmering violet glow, casting ethereal light across the wearer’s forehead and hair. The etched silver kanji illuminate with fine lines of white-purple light. During the phase reaction, the upper torso of the wearer flickers, becoming momentarily translucent like a semi-solid ghost.
    • Sound: Spectators hear the wearer recite a brief, melodious Jumon incantation, followed immediately by a delicate, crystalline chime from the silver teardrop pendants.
    • Touch: Nearby individuals feel a sudden, localized drop in temperature—a cool, subtle breeze radiating outward from the headband’s central stone.
    • Smell: Those standing close notice a clean, ozone-like scent drifting through the immediate air.
    • Taste: Nearby onlookers catch a fleeting, crisp metallic dryness in the air upon deep inhalation.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions: Observers attuned to the spiritual realm perceive a faint, translucent copy of the user’s upper form detach or expand outward, floating like a shimmering phantom overlaying the physical body.
    • Positives: Allies gain clear visual and acoustic confirmation that the avatar is actively scouting or shifting out of danger, signaling time to hold defensive positions.
    • Negatives: Hostile observers instantly recognize the glowing purple crown as an active scrying or phasing mechanism, singling out the user as a spellcasting target.

Crafting Recipe: Jumon 304 Replica (Headband of the Astral Weaver)

Materials Needed

  • Tier 1 Magic Crystalline Cell (Oval-Shaped): 1 crystal (acts as the primary astral lens for remote perception and phase shifting).
  • Sterling Silver Wire & Plate: 4 ounces (used to forge the main headband band, side spirals, and etched kanji wireframe).
  • Purple Velvet Ribbon: 12 inches (lines the interior band for mental grounding, comfort, and skin insulation).
  • Teardrop Silver Pendants: 2 pieces (hollow-cast silver beads tuned to resonate acoustically during vocal chants).
  • Alchemical Ethereal Ink: 1 vial (a luminescent compound of powdered amethyst, moonstone dust, and silver resin).

Tools Required

  • Jeweler’s Anvil & Ball-Peen Hammer: For shaping and curving the sterling silver plate into a fitted headband contour.
  • Precision Wire Pliers & Mandrel: For bending the silver wire into radiating spiral patterns.
  • Fine Engraving Burrs & Stylus: For etching tiny kanji characters into the silver wireframe pathways.
  • Gem-Setting Bezel Mandrel: For securing the oval Tier 1 Magic Crystalline Cell into the central brow mount.
  • Alchemical UV Setting Lamp: For curing the alchemical ethereal ink into the engraved kanji channels.

Skill Requirements

  • Jewelry Crafting / Silverworking Skill Level: Minimum Level 6 (Requires Skill Level 5 base + 1 additional level for Tier 1 output).
  • Rune Inscription / Mental Arcana Skill Level: Minimum Level 6.

Crafting Steps

  1. Forming the Silver Band: Hammer and shape the sterling silver plate over the jeweler’s anvil to create the ergonomic headwear base. Smooth all edges to ensure a flush fit against the brow.
  2. Mounting the Inner Lining: Affix the purple velvet ribbon to the interior surface of the silver band using an alchemical bonding agent, creating a comfortable barrier against the metal.
  3. Constructing the Central Bezel & Spirals: Using wire pliers, bend sterling silver wire into radiating spiral patterns around an oval bezel frame. Weld the wire assembly securely to the outer front of the silver headband.
  4. Setting the Crystal Lens: Insert the oval-shaped Tier 1 Magic Crystalline Cell into the center bezel frame. Fold the bezel tabs over the stone with the setting tool to lock the crystal flush against the silver wire network.
  5. Engraving and Inscribing the Kanji: Using the fine engraving stylus, carve the specific Jumon scrying characters along the spiraling wireframe. Fill the engraved channels with alchemical ethereal ink and cure it under the UV setting lamp until the runes glow faint violet.
  6. Attaching the Harmonic Pendants: Suspend the two teardrop silver pendants from delicate wire loops on the left and right sides of the headband. Ensure they swing freely to chime lightly against the band when the wearer speaks or moves.
  7. Harmonic Calibration: Wear the finished headband and recite a low-frequency Jumon chant for one full minute to complete simple initial attunement. Adjust pendant placement until the central crystal pulses in rhythm with the user’s vocalization.

Seeing Crown and Floating Eye

In the days of the very old fire, when the world Saṃsāra was still half-made of river-water and half-made of smoke, there lived upon the eastern rocks of Magdalenian a seeker of faint shadows whose name is written in the cracked clay as the Eye-Watcher of the Cold Gate.

It is set down in the yellowed paper of the third kingdom that this Watcher had no grand armor of brass, nor did he ride upon the flying lizards of the high lords. He was a small man of low tier, born among the reborn souls who had fallen out of the sky-hole from the far-away world of paper houses and iron horses. His purse held only three copper buttons, and his boots were broken at the toes.

In those years, the deep dark places beneath the stone houses were full of red-eyed beasts and hidden traps of iron teeth. The big lords of the castle would send the new small souls—the Tier 1 seekers—into the black holes to fetch gold cups and glass beads. Many of these small souls were broken in the dark, for they could not see what stood behind the stone doors until the teeth had already entered their meat.

The Eye-Watcher sat upon his straw mat for ninety-six nights, holding in his left palm a small, long-shaped crystal stone of purple water, which he had pulled from the belly of a deep river-fish. He spoke to his inner heart, as the old translation clumsily records: “Why must the foot go where the eyeball has not first walked? A man who puts his nose through a wall before his eye is a fool who feeds his head to the tiger.”

On the ninety-seventh morning, when the great violet sun-disk was rising over the sea of grey salt, a wandering priest of the old chants came down the mountain path. This man was a singer of the Jumon—the words of the ancient spirit-mouths that make the air grow heavy and cold. He wore no shoes, but around his head were wrapped silver wires that shook when he spoke his prayers.

When the priest began to chant his Jumon, the purple crystal in the Watcher’s hand began to glow like a firefly in a dark bottle. The little silver drops hanging from the priest’s ears made a sound like small water falling upon glass, and the Watcher felt his own mind slip out of his forehead, floating three paces above his knees like a feather in a warm chimney.

“Lo,” said the Watcher of the Cold Gate, in the broken words of the ancient scribe, “the chant of the spirit-mouth is a long rope that pulls the seeing-mind out of the bone box!”

For three long rainy seasons, the Watcher and the singing priest sat in the small stone room near the mountain vent. They took long strips of real silver metal, beaten thin like dry leaves, and shaped them into a circle to fit upon the head of a man. They lined the inside with soft purple cloth pulled from the sea-worms, so that the metal would not bite into the brow of the wearer. In the middle of the brow, they set the long purple stone inside a net of spiraling silver wire, and they hung two hollow drops of silver from the sides, near the ears.

Along the silver sides, the priest used a sharp copper pin to scratch many tiny, bent words—the Jumon 304 of the Ethereal Window—filling the cuts with the purple dust of crushed river-stones and mountain ink.

When the headband was finished, the oldest tablet calls it Jumon 304, but in the low country it was known as The Crown of the Long Eye.

The grand test of the item came when the Greedy Duke of the Red Keep commanded twenty small souls to enter the Vault of the Seven Iron Hammers. The vault was pitch black, and behind the main iron gate sat a heavy trap of swinging blades that had cut fifty men into small pieces in the years before.

The Eye-Watcher placed the silver headband upon his brow. He did not step through the gate, nor did he put his hand upon the iron latch. He stood upon his two feet, closed his physical eyes, and vocalized the short Jumon of Spatial Scouting, as the priest had taught him.

The ancient scroll describes the miracle with strange and awkward phrasing:

“The purple stone upon the headband became as a torch in a fog. Out from the silver drops came a thin, sweet chime like the bell of a goat on a high hill. The spirit-mind of the Watcher did untether itself from his skull-box! An eye of clear ghost-glass, which no man could touch with a spear, went flying through the key-hole of the iron door. It did sit upon the high air inside the vault, looking down upon the seven hammers and the hidden trip-strings in the stone floor. The Watcher saw the red-eyed beasts hiding behind the pillars, and he saw the pit of green acid beneath the floor-boards.”

The Watcher opened his mouth and told the small souls outside: “Do not step upon the third stone, for it moves the hammer. Do not touch the red door, for the acid lies behind it.”

Thus, the twenty Tier 1 seekers walked through the terrible vault without losing a single drop of blood. When a hidden guard fired a heavy iron dart from the shadow, the Watcher spoke a fast, single-word Jumon. His chest and shoulders became like thin smoke, and the iron dart passed clean through his ribs without tearing his shirt or spilling his life-water, for he was out of phase with the hard world.

The Duke’s guards were filled with great wonder and fear, believing the Watcher had become a ghost who could not be slain by iron. The headband was copied by the silver-smiths of the coast in the centuries that followed, so that the weak and low-tier avatars of Saṃsāra might look into the dark places of the world before stepping into danger.

Moral of the Story: Wisdom seeks to perceive the hidden path before feet are set upon it, for sight without body avoids the snare that claims the blind step.
