Huna 827 of the Aloalos Ascent

by

in
  • Lore: This delicate charm was woven from the fibers of a hibiscus flower that grew on a floating isle near the VaporSphere horizon. Infused with the Huna principle of Kala—the removal of limitations—it allows the wearer to momentarily untether their physical weight from the earth. While it lacks the power for true flight, it grants the user a sensation of drifting as if submerged in warm, spiritual waters.
  • Slot: Neck Slot
  • Rarity: Common
  • Tier: 1
  • Resilience: 10
  • Armor Check (AC): 0
  • Hit Points (HP): 30 (Avatar Max HP + 10)

Passive Magic

  • Weightless Spirit: The avatar’s base weight is reduced by 50% for the purpose of determining what surfaces can support them. This allows the avatar to walk across thin ice, fragile branches, or pressure plates without triggering them, provided they move at half speed.
  • Gentle Descent: When falling from any height, the avatar automatically slows their velocity. They take no damage from falls of 30 feet or less and always land on their feet.

Activable Magic

  • Kala Drift: (1 Action) The avatar speaks a short flourish of words to invoke the “Anti-Gravity” effect. For the next 12 seconds (2 turns), the avatar’s feet hover 4 inches above the ground. During this time, they ignore difficult terrain caused by mud, water, or debris. This action includes the activation and the subsequent return of the charm to a resting state against the chest.
  • Mana-Levitation: (1 Action) By concentrating on the Huna energy within the charm, the avatar can lift a single non-living object weighing up to 10 pounds. The object floats up to 5 feet in the air and follows the avatar for one minute. If the avatar moves more than 20 feet away from the object, the effect ends.

Acquisition and Commerce of the Huna 827

The Huna 827 of the Aloalo’s Ascent is typically obtained through a combination of cultural exchange, spiritual exploration, or specific trade in regions where the interconnectedness of mind and body is a primary study. Because it is a tier 1 item of common rarity, it is accessible to new avatars but remains a specialized tool due to its unique anti-gravity properties.

  • Quest and Combat Rewards
    • An avatar might receive this charm as a token of gratitude from a village elder after participating in a ritual to harmonize a local ley line.
    • It may be found as a loot drop after defeating a sentient beast that had accidentally swallowed the charm, causing it to leap unnaturally high during the struggle.
    • Possession of an avatar that was a practitioner of Huna at the time of their transition would also grant the character this item immediately.
  • Specialized Boutique and Curio Shops
    • These items are frequently found in “Ethereal Goods” boutiques or “Vessel & Soul” shops located in coastal island cities.
    • These shops are characterized by the smell of tropical incense, the sound of trickling elemental water, and displays of items that appear to defy the weight of the atmosphere.
    • In a high-traffic port city like the Central City of an island nation, a shopkeeper might sell the Huna 827 for 1200 gold.
    • If the avatar is selling the item to such a boutique, the shopkeeper—adhering to the “buyer beware” sellers’ market—might only offer 400 gold, citing a surplus of low-tier charms.
  • Guild Trading Posts
    • General worker guilds or maritime sub-guilds often carry basic utility items for their members.
    • In a guild hall, the Huna 827 might be priced at a suggested value of 1000 gold to registered members.
    • Selling the item back to a guild usually results in a credit of 500 gold toward other tier 1 equipment or membership dues.
  • Rural and Remote Markets
    • In a rural village far from the trade winds, the availability of such a charm is rare.
    • A local merchant who does not understand the Huna principle might sell it as a simple “floating trinket” for as little as 800 gold just to remove it from their inventory.
    • Conversely, in an area where gravity-defying tools are necessary for survival (such as a village built on the side of a steep cliff), the price could soar to 2500 gold because the cost of access is significantly higher.
  • The World Bank Transactions
    • While the World Bank does not sell the Huna 827 directly, an avatar could exchange coins for its value or use their Mind’s Eye to verify the account balance needed for a private purchase.
    • If the item was part of a package deal when opening a new account (though usually limited to the Blender, Clock, or Toaster), a bank teller might occasionally facilitate a trade for a tier 1 item if the character has a high renown.

Strategic Utility of the Huna 827 in Roleplay

The Huna 827 of the Aloalo’s Ascent is more than a simple trinket; it is a tool for manipulating the physics of Saṃsāra through the Huna principle of Kala. Its application varies significantly depending on whether the avatar is navigating a high-density metropolis or the untamed wilderness of the 73 island countries.

Defensive Applications and Environmental Roleplay

  • Safe and Guarded Areas (Urban Environments):
    • In a city with skyscrapers or floating platforms, an avatar can use the Gentle Descent passive to escape a high-altitude confrontation by simply stepping off a ledge.
    • While guards in a “Designated Safe Area” provide tripled AC protection, an avatar can use Kala Drift to hover over spilled oil, grease, or magical traps laid by an assassin, maintaining their composure and defensive posture without touching the compromised ground.
    • In a “Somewhat Safe Area” like a walled town, the avatar might roleplay the Weightless Spirit ability to stand atop a fragile decorative fence or a stack of thin porcelain crates to gain a height advantage against a street-level brawler, doubling their effective AC through positioning.
  • Wilderness and Unsafe Areas:
    • When traversing a “Deathly Area” where AC is zero and every hit lands, the Weightless Spirit passive becomes a vital defensive tool. The avatar can move across quicksand, deep snow, or thin crusts of volcanic earth that would swallow a standard-weight creature.
    • By roleplaying the internal focus of Huna, the avatar can stay light on their feet to avoid ground-based vibrations, potentially making them harder to detect for creatures with Tremorsense.

Offense and Tactical Roleplay

  • Aerial Maneuvers and Combat Actions:
    • An avatar can spend an Action to activate Kala Drift, allowing them to glide forward while unsheathing and using a weapon in the same motion.
    • In a “Normal Area,” the avatar could use their movement to run up a wall and then trigger the anti-gravity effect to stay suspended at the apex of the jump, allowing them to deliver a downward strike with a spear or bow from an angle the foe cannot easily block.
    • The Mana-Levitation ability can be used offensively by a clever avatar to lift a 10-pound object—such as a stone or a heavy gear—and drop it on an unsuspecting foe’s head from 5 feet up, forcing the target to contend with an environmental hazard while the avatar prepares their next Tier 1 attack.
  • Tactical Positioning and “Sellers’ Market” Combat:
    • Because movement can be broken up before or after actions, an avatar using the Huna 827 can “drift” 10 feet into a flanking position, perform a Tier 1 attack (Base + 1d4), and then use the remainder of their movement to drift back out of the foe’s immediate reach.
    • In naval combat between island nations, an avatar can use the charm to stay buoyant and mobile on the deck of a pitching ship during a storm, ignoring the “Difficult Terrain” of a wet, slippery surface to land a precise blow on a boarding pirate’s Targeted Item, such as a captain’s cutlass or an attuned pendant.
  • Roleplaying the Mind’s Eye and True Names:
    • A character might use their Mind’s Eye to identify a foe’s weakness to falling damage or environmental hazards.
    • If the avatar knows a foe’s True Name, they can chant a Ritual Spell (taking more than 6 seconds) while hovering in the air via Kala Drift. The combination of the 25% damage boost from the ritual and the doubling of damage from the True Name creates a devastating offensive display that visually manifests as the avatar glowing with a purple Huna light while suspended above the battlefield.

Perception of Activation: Huna 827 of the Aloalo’s Ascent

  • User’s Perspective
    • The avatar feels a sudden, profound cessation of the physical pressure where their feet meet the ground, as if the world is no longer “pushing back” against them.
    • A gentle warmth radiates from the center of the chest where the charm rests, spreading through the limbs and leaving a sensation of being submerged in a sun-warmed pool.
    • Balance becomes effortless; the inner ear perceives no tilt or sway, even if the avatar is positioned on an unstable surface.
  • Observer’s Perspective
    • The charm begins to emit a soft, pulsing purple glow that outlines the avatar’s silhouette with a faint, shimmering haze.
    • To a witness, the avatar appears to “settle” into the air, with their clothing or fur drifting upward slightly as if they are underwater.
    • Any dust or loose debris directly beneath the avatar’s feet is pushed outward in a perfect circle, leaving a clear “footprint” of air where they hover.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions
    • True Sight: An observer with True Sight perceives a vibrant ultraviolet aura shaped like hibiscus petals expanding from the charm. This glow is a distinct shade associated with the school of Transmutation.
    • Blind Sight: A creature using echolocation perceives the avatar as a “void” or a blurred shape, as the anti-gravity field dampens the vibration of their footsteps against the earth.
    • Mind’s Eye: The Mind’s Eye of an examiner sees the “stats” of the avatar shifting, specifically noting the “Difficult Terrain” resistance flag and the temporary AC buff associated with their elevated position.
    • Soul Sight: The avatar’s soul appears to “expand” slightly beyond the physical boundaries of the body, appearing lighter and less tethered to the material plane.
  • Positives
    • Effortless Mobility: The avatar can traverse hazardous ground, such as acidic pools, lava crusts, or pressure-plate traps, with zero physical interaction.
    • Mental Clarity: The Huna magic brings a sense of Kala (freedom), reducing the effects of psychological “Fear” or “Stress” debuffs while active.
    • Stealth Advantage: Movement becomes virtually silent as there is no physical impact with the ground.
  • Negatives
    • Inertia Issues: Because the avatar is untethered, they have less “traction.” If they are struck by a heavy physical blow, they are pushed back 50% further than they would be if they were firmly planted on the ground.
    • The “Weight of the World” Return: When the activation ends, the sudden return of 100% body weight can cause a brief moment of disorientation or a “heavy-limbed” feeling for several seconds.
    • Visual Signature: The purple glow and ultraviolet aura make it impossible to remain hidden in darkness or from creatures with magical vision.

Alchemical Weaving of the Aloalo’s Ascent

  • Materials Needed
    • 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal: Must be at least the size and weight of a coin to act as the primary power source.
    • 12 Strands of Sun-Bleached Hibiscus Fiber: Harvested from a high-altitude island to ensure the essence of “Kala” (limitation removal).
    • 1 Dram of Elemental Water: Purified to act as a solvent for the magical virus within the crystalline cells.
    • 1 Pinch of Volcanic Ash: To provide the “Fire” element necessary for the steam-press integration of the fibers.
    • 1 Silver Chain or Silk Cord: To serve as the physical housing for the neck slot.
  • Tools Required
    • Alchemical Press: A small, steam-powered mechanical device used to transfer rotational power into compression.
    • Engraving Needle: For inscribing the “Mind’s Eye” compatible runes onto the crystal.
    • Spirit Basin: A shallow wooden bowl used to soak the fibers in the elemental solution.
    • Precision Pliers: Mechanical hand tools for weaving the metallic or silk housing.
  • Skill Requirements
    • Alchemical Crafting (Trained): Minimum 1 point of skill to safely handle the elemental water and volcanic ash.
    • Magical Crafting (Trained): Minimum 1 point of skill to properly align the magic crystal’s weave with the fibers.
    • Tier 1 Proficiency: The crafter must be at least a Tier 1 character to activate the finished product’s properties.
  • Crafting Steps
    • Fiber Preparation: Soak the hibiscus fibers in the spirit basin filled with elemental water and volcanic ash for one hour. This softens the material and introduces the magical virus necessary for anti-gravity properties.
    • Crystal Inscription: Using the engraving needle, carve the specific Huna sigils into the Tier 1 Magic Crystal. These sigils must focus the “Power of Thought” toward weightlessness.
    • Mechanical Pressing: Place the soaked fibers and the inscribed crystal into the Alchemical Press. Use steam-driven mechanical power to compress the fibers around the crystal until they form a tight, woven lattice.
    • Weaving the Housing: Use precision pliers to attach the compressed lattice to the silver chain or silk cord. Ensure the connection is secure, as any gap will disrupt the flow of magic.
    • Attunement Test: The crafter must hold the item for one minute to perform a simple attunement. If the item begins to emit a soft purple glow and floats slightly in the palm, the synthesis is successful.
    • Final Inspection: Use the Mind’s Eye to verify that the item’s AC does not exceed 3 and that the “Anti-Gravity” tag is correctly registered in the item’s metadata.

Sky-Bloom and Untethered Foot
A Fragment of the Floating Petal

Before the nine thousand years of the Reincarnated, in the mists where the Goddess Gaialilith first played at the mixing of the breaths, there was a high island that did not touch the salt-sea. This land-clump was named “The Aloalo that Kisses Helios,” for it was tethered to the VaporSphere by nothing but the desire of the plants to grow tall. Upon this floating rock, the blossoms did not grow toward the dirt, but instead, they reached so hard for the gas giant in the sky that their roots became confused and let go of the earth.

There lived a man-spirit of the Huna-knowing, whose name has been eaten by the translation of years, but let us call him “He of the Lightened Heart.” He was a weaver of the fibers that do not fall. He watched the Hibiscus flowers of the high island and saw that when the wind of the Elemental Age blew from the poles of the moon, the petals did not drop. Instead, they floated upward, seeking to become moons themselves.

“Why,” asked He of the Lightened Heart of the Wind-Elementals who roared past his hut, “does the stone remain heavy while the spirit of the flower is permitted to drift?”

The Wind-Elemental, being a creature of great movement and little patience, buffeted the weaver’s ears and whispered in a language of hissing steam: “The stone believes in the moon-crust. The flower believes only in the sky-giant. To be light is not a change of the body, but a forgetting of the weight.”

Thus, the weaver began his Great Fast of the Mind. For many weeks of the Burning and the Dimming, he sat at the edge of the floating island with his feet dangling into the void. He watched the VaporSphere eclipse the Helios, and in the purple darkness of the shadow-time, he saw the magic viruses of the air glowing like tiny stars. He realized that the Hibiscus plants were not just growing; they were eating the very essence of the “Kala”—the law that says what goes up must come down.

With hands that trembled from the lack of heavy food, he harvested the fibers of the Aloalo. He did not use a knife of iron, for iron is the most “heavy-believing” of all materials. Instead, he used a shard of a Tier 1 Magic Crystal that had fallen from a dying Sky-Beast. As he stripped the fibers, he chanted the Normal Chant, but as the hours turned into the Ritual of the Singing-Time, his voice became a Shouting-Ritual that lasted for more than 11:00 (noon) until the Helios went down.

He wove the fibers into a lattice of the “Anti-Gravity.” As he worked, the mechanical power of his own thought became like a steam-engine of the soul. He took the Magic Crystal—the size and weight of a coin—and he spoke to it. He told the crystal that it was no longer a rock. He told it that it was a cloud. He told it that the moon-crust of Saṃsāra was merely a suggestion, not a command.

When the weaving was finished, the item did not sit upon his workbench. It drifted toward the ceiling of his hut, pulling the silver chain with it. He of the Lightened Heart reached out and performed the Handheld Attunement, and instantly, the pain of the heavy-world vanished from his joints. He walked out of his hut, and where other men would have trod upon the grass and crushed it, he walked upon the tops of the blades. He found that he could stand upon the surface of the mountain-spring water as if it were a polished floor of a Royal Court.

However, the story tells of a Great Conflict. A Feral Beast of the Evolved-Mind, a creature of many tusks and heavy scales that believed very strongly in the earth, saw the weaver drifting. This beast was a master of the Tremorsense, but it could not find the weaver, for the weaver’s feet made no pings upon the ground. This angered the beast, for it lived in a “Deathly Area” of the crags where it was used to every strike landing true.

The beast leapt at the weaver, its heavy weight intended to crush the “Kala” out of him. But the weaver, using the Gentle Descent of his soul, simply stepped into the air. He drifted upward as the beast crashed into the stone beneath him. The weaver then used his Action to retrieve a small stone from his pouch and, using the Mana-Levitation of the charm, suspended it above the beast’s head. When the beast looked up, the weaver released the thought, and the stone fell with the full weight of the world that the weaver had forgotten.

The beast fled, confused by a man who had the scent of the earth but the weight of the clouds. He of the Lightened Heart remained on the floating island until his avatar reached the time of reproduction, at which point the memories of his Tier 1 life were committed to the great World-Memory of Gaialilith.

The original Huna 827 is said to be lost in the caves of the deep oceans or perhaps stored in a Faction Crypt that has been forgotten for 9000a. But the recipe remains for those who have the Mind’s Eye to see it. It is taught to every child in the island nations that while the Monarchy owns the land you stand upon, they cannot own the air you hover through if your heart knows the Huna of the Ascent.

Moral of the Story: It is not the strength of the legs that allows one to scale the heavens, but the willingness of the mind to let go of the ground.
