From: Whispered Codex of Embracing Change
Purpose: Calming the mind, easing anxiety, and finding clarity in emotional turmoil.
Visualization: The caster envisions themselves seated beside a placid lake. Their racing thoughts are like stones dropped into the water, sinking and dissolving, leaving a smooth, reflective surface.
Potential Game Effect: Temporary bonus to checks relying on focus, emotional resilience, or resisting charm/fear effects.
Expanded Lore:
- Origins: This meditative technique traces back to ancient monastic traditions within Saṃsāra. Sages dwelling in isolated mountain retreats developed it to combat the distractions of the material world and unlock mental clarity needed to perceive the subtle flow of magical energy.
- Folklore: There are tales of troubled villagers seeking out isolated hermits skilled in The Whisper of Still Waters. These hermits would guide them through the visualization, easing their burdens and granting temporary respite from despair or overwhelming passions.
- The Still Waters: The image of the placid lake isn’t merely symbolic. It’s thought to resonate with a mystical body of water said to exist on a hidden plane, a wellspring of serenity that gifted practitioners can momentarily tap into.
Tier: Tier One (suitable for starting characters)
Cost: Very low mana cost or potential psychic/mental exertion cost
Requirements:
- Knowledge of the spell’s visualization technique (could be learned from the Codex, other teachers, or stumbled upon through intuition)
- Quiet location free from disturbances for a short duration
Tags: Mental, Calming, Self-buff, Focus
Specific Values (Example):
- Duration: 20 minutes
- Effect: +2 bonus on Concentration checks, Wisdom saving throws, and skill checks specifically aimed at calming others or de-escalating a situation.
Roleplay:
- A nervous character reciting mantras under their breath, picturing the calm lake before a stressful task.
- A mediator whispering the technique to feuding parties, guiding them to clear their thoughts.
- Exhausted from overwhelming visions, the caster desperately focuses on the serene lake to regain composure.
Tactics
- Pre-emptive self-cast before tense negotiations or infiltrations.
- Counteract enemy spells targeting a character’s emotions (enrage, fear, etc.).
- Calm a panicked ally who’s making reckless decisions.
- Not directly damaging, but offers an edge in combat by mitigating enemy morale-breaking tricks.
Additional Considerations:
- Since the spell relies on internal focus, it could be disrupted by loud noises or physical attacks.
- A master of this technique might achieve longer durations or stronger bonuses with dedicated practice.
- The spell could be visualized and cast even if a body of water isn’t immediately present, though with somewhat lessened effect.

一 Example of Activation —
- SIGHT
- What is Perceived: The caster’s inner vision of the placid lake. The waters might appear impossibly clear, reflecting the surrounding environment (or the caster’s inner emotional state) with uncanny detail.
- Description: The lake visualization can range from realistic to stylized, depending on the caster’s personal preferences and imagination.
- Positive: Creates a point of calming visual focus, providing an anchor during chaotic experiences.
- Negative: If interrupted mid-spell, the sudden fading of the image could be momentarily disorienting.
- SOUND
- What is Perceived: The gentle sounds associated with a still lake: lapping water, rustling reeds, birdsong in the distance. The caster may also hear their own breathing slow and deepen.
- Description: These sounds should be soft and unobtrusive, fostering a sense of tranquility.
- Positive: Provides a comforting soundscape that drowns out distracting noises.
- Negative: Extreme external noise (a roar, an explosion) could break the spell prematurely.
- TOUCH
- What is Perceived: The physical sensations of their chosen meditation posture. Feeling the earth beneath, the air against their skin, the rise and fall of their chest.
- Description: This heightened awareness is grounding, reminding the caster of their physical presence in the current moment.
- Positive: Enhances focus on bodily sensations, which can help combat feelings of panic or detachment.
- Negative: Discomfort in their meditation posture (cramps, itchiness) could hinder the spell’s efficacy.
- SMELL (Optional)
- What is Perceived: Fresh, clean scents – watery mist, damp moss, forest smells if appropriate to the surrounding location.
- Description: Subtle smells can offer an extra layer of grounding to the visualization.
- Positive: Evokes a sense of being “present” in the visualized environment.
- Negative: Unpleasant smells in the real world or a strong negative connotation with certain scents could be distracting.
- EXTRA-SENSORY PERCEPTION
- What is Perceived: A shift in ‘mental energy.’ Perhaps a sense of ‘heaviness’ dissipating, replaced by a lighter, clearer feeling within the mind.
- Description: Highly subjective, might come to be associated with certain colours, textures, or temperatures in the caster’s mind’s eye.
- Positive: Provides a tangible internal reference to track the effectiveness of the spell.
- Negative: Initially, this new perception could be disquieting or unfamiliar, taking time to acclimate to.
Murmurs of Serenity in the Unending Storm
Long has it been told, this story whispered from master to student, from weathered scroll to questioning eyes. In forgotten ages, they say, there walked a soul burdened by a mind in tempest. Ceaseless thoughts roared within, each wave smashing against the shores of tranquility, eroding hope. No rest came, even by still waters, for those waters mirrored back only the raging storms within.
Yet, whispers spoke of a sage dwelling where skies meet mountains. This elder, it was said, had peered into the heart of that tumult and emerged whole. And so, the lost one sought the hidden path. Many trials tested the traveler’s resolve, and despair nearly devoured them. But on they toiled.
At last, before the elder stood the weary soul. No words were exchanged, the elder merely gestured towards a moss-covered rock beside a tranquil lake. As the traveler sank upon that perch, the elder did but gently point to the placid face of the water.
For hours, perhaps days, the traveler looked, seeing their own turmoil reflected back. No peace came, only frustration. Finally, they cried out, “This serves no purpose! You are a false sage, this a wasted journey!”
Quietly, the elder offered but a single word, “Observe.”
Thus the traveler turned their gaze back to the still water. Annoyance gnawing at their heart, they stared with forced patience. Then… it occurred. With a jolt, they realized that even when the wind rippled the surface, a deeper stillness clung below. Not tranquility they had been seeking, but an unshakeable core the waters always returned to.
A shift happened then, in the space between thoughts. One single racing thought, like a stone they’d clung to, the traveler dropped into the depths of that mind-lake. Down it sank, dissolving, vanishing with no trace upon the smooth bottom of inner stillness. Then, another dropped, and another. It was not that the thoughts ceased, but their power… the relentless clinging … faded like ripples across the water.
Upon this realization, tranquility descended not from without, but bloomed from that place of stillness within. And so, the weary soul became the Whisperer of Still Waters, and the traveler returned to the world not free from tempest, but a beacon of the peace found within its quiet depths.
Moral of the Story: True serenity lies not in silencing the storm, but in discovering the tranquil depths beneath, even when the surface churns.
Suggested conversions to other systems:
Call of Cthulhu
- Approach: In Call of Cthulhu, this spell acts as a temporary respite from the creeping dread and psychic strain of the Mythos.
- Skill Tie-In: Psychology or Occult (Represents understanding of mental focusing techniques and potentially a touch of folklore regarding “calm within chaos”)
- Mechanics:
- To Cast: Successful Skill roll – difficulty based on severity of mental distress. A critical success might extend the duration or effect, a critical failure could worsen anxieties.
- Effect: Regain a portion of lost Sanity. Temporary bonus to Willpower on rolls to resist fear, madness triggers, or disturbing psychic intrusions.
Blades in the Dark
- Approach: A mental technique in Blades in the Dark provides a tactical advantage in tense situations.
- Action Type: Focus (requires a momentary retreat from immediate conflict to center oneself)
- Mechanics:
- To Cast: Resist roll with Will attribute. Difficulty based on stress of the situation, potential distractions.
- Effect: +1d on the next Action Roll where composure is a factor (social manipulation, resisting coercion, staying cool under pressure). Critical success might also clear some Stress.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)
- Approach: A 1st Level spell emphasizing abjuration, perhaps the cleric or druid spell lists.
- Mechanics:
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: Self
- Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes
- Effect: +1d4 bonus to saves against Charmed & Frightened conditions. Advantage on checks to focus in chaotic distractions (loud battle, crowds, etc.)
Knave
- Approach: In Knave, less emphasis on strict mechanics, more on creative roleplaying and narrative weight.
- Mechanics:
- To Cast: Requires no roll. Player vividly describes the visualization, setting, and inner focus. GM narrates the effect based on how compelling it is.
- Effect: May grant a +1 bonus to a suitable task (“holding my ground against a frightening beast”). Might remove penalties inflicted by emotional distress, providing an internal clarity to the next decision.
Fate
- Approach: In Fate, this spell acts more as a temporary Aspect the character compels or is compelled against.
- Aspect Example: “Clarity Within the Maelstrom.”
- Mechanics:
- To Cast: Create an Advantage related to internal focus, resisting mental strains, etc. This provides the narrative base to invoke the Aspect later.
- Compel: Can compel the Aspect against oneself when distractions disrupt clear thinking or in situations where inner focus breaks.
- Invoke: Invoke the Aspect for bonus dice or narrative permission when clarity of mind and composure are crucial (seeing through an illusion, resisting temptation).
Numenera/Cypher System
- Approach: Could be an Esotery (Mental ability) or specialized Numenera item with a similar effect.
- Mechanics:
- Item/Esotery: Might reduce the difficulty of Intellect Defense rolls by one step for a short duration. Can potentially offer resistance against psychic intrusion or spells targeting emotions.
- Cypher: Consider making it a one-use Cypher granting temporary protection and a bonus to Will, similar to the suggestions under Call of Cthulhu.
Pathfinder (2nd Edition)
- Approach: Focus spell (gained by Clerics, certain Monks, etc.) tied to concepts of composure and serenity.
- Mechanics:
- Focus Points: Spend 1 Focus Point
- Action: 1 Action (verbal likely)
- Effect: +1 circumstance bonus to Will saves, +1 status bonus to Perception against hidden foes or in distracting conditions for 1 minute.
Savage Worlds
- Approach: New Power under the standard Arcane Backgrounds (miracles, psionics, etc.), emphasizing the calming, centering quality.
- Mechanics:
- Power Points: 2 to Activate.
- Rank: Novice
- Effect: Shake off a Shaken condition. +2 to resist further Fear effects and to Notice things through stress or chaos for the next 5 rounds.
Shadowrun
- Approach: In Shadowrun, this could take the form of either a spell or a biofeedback/meditation program for cyberware.
- Mechanics – Spell:
- Tradition: Likely Hermetic or Shamanic, emphasizing mental mastery.
- Drain: Low or no Drain – this is purely a mental focus ability.
- Effect: +2 dice to resist spells that induce fear, manipulate emotions, or drain Willpower. Could temporarily reduce social penalties caused by intense emotions.
- Mechanics – Biofeedback Program
- Rating: Low rating (accessible to lower level runners)
- Effect: Provides bonus dice to Willpower during tense situations (interrogations, firefights). Could synergize with certain cyberdecks to aid in resisting hacking attempts against the user by imposing composure penalties on the attacker.
Starfinder
- Approach: Likely manifests as either a Mystic spell or a specialized piece of personal tech (‘mind focus modulator’).
- Mechanics – Mystic Spell
- Level: 1st Level
- Effect: +1d4 to saves against mind-affecting effects. Bonus to Concentration checks while stressed (ship battles, etc.).
- Mechanics – Tech Item
- Level: Low level, relatively affordable.
- Effect: Provides minor resistance to mind-reading races/tech. Provides a bonus on Resolve checks in distracting environments.
Traveller
- Approach: This technique likely stems from ancient psionic disciplines or is taught by isolated monastic orders.
- Mechanics:
- Psionic Skill: A unique skill specifically tailored to this visualization exercise. May interact with or provide minor defense against the Psionics rules of your chosen edition.
- Difficulty: Difficulty for casting/using the skill will vary based on current stress level or distractions within the Traveller universe.
Warhammer (Both Fantasy and 40k)
- Approach – WH Fantasy: A low-level Lore spell of an order emphasizing serenity (Jade Order?) or a hedge magic ritual.
- Approach – WH 40k: Could be a sanctioned Imperial Psyker ability (very low level) or a heretical Warp technique known to secretive cults.
- Mechanics:
- Effect: Grants advantage or additional dice to resist Fear tests, or temporarily reduces penalties based on Peril of the Warp (40k). Emphasis on internal focus amidst chaotic scenarios.
- Risk: In both Warhammer settings, using magic is risky. If you fail the associated Willpower test, there’s potential for minor side effects in Fantasy or attracting Warp attention in 40k.
