From: Whispered Codex of Embracing Change
Purpose: Recognizing the interconnectedness of all things, fostering empathy and a sense of shared purpose.
Visualization: The caster imagines themselves as a single thread in a vast, intricate tapestry. Each surrounding person, creature, and object is also a thread, weaving together to form the greater pattern of existence.
Potential Game Effect: The caster feels a temporary sense of kinship with those around them. This might translate into a reduced desire to initiate conflict or increased willingness to lend aid.
Expanded Lore
- Ancient Origins: Legends say the spell’s conceptual origins trace back to nomadic tribes who traveled vast distances. Witnessing the ebb and flow of life across diverse lands, their sages first articulated the connectedness that transcends location and individual form.
- Spiritual Significance: It’s often interwoven with philosophies or religions emphasizing harmonious existence. Practitioners might believe that, by perceiving the Tapestry, they are briefly glimpsing a more enlightened state of awareness of the unified nature of reality.
- Ripple Effects: The lore may caution that prolonged, frequent use can be disorienting. Some traditions warn overuse may cause practitioners to lose their sense of individuality entirely, dissolving into the vastness of the interconnected world.
Tier: Tier One (accessible to low-level or initiate characters)
Cost: Primarily mental. Repeated castings potentially induce a sense of existential weariness.
Requirements:
Knowledge of the Tapestry visualization.
A space quiet enough for reflection.
Tags: Divination, Mental, Awareness, Pacifism (depending on how your system handles morality)
Specific Values (Example):
- Duration: 5-10 minutes (the lingering awareness slowly fades into normal perception)
- Effect: Reduced hostility towards those perceived within the vision’s context. May provide bonuses (+1d4) on skill checks for de-escalation, offering aid, or resisting acts of outright violence against another being the caster felt the “link” with.
Roleplay:
- A usually brash character takes a deep breath, picturing the Tapestry, then proposes a non-violent approach.
- Seeing a wounded enemy, the caster briefly hesitates, visualizing their shared thread, then rushes to assist with healing.
- During negotiations, a subtle sense of interconnectedness makes the caster focus less on personal gain, more on a solution benefiting the greatest number.
Tactics
- Preemptive de-escalation before conflicts reach a violent stage.
- Promoting temporary truces with a shared enemy as all involved visualize their connectedness might reveal mutually beneficial paths.
- Cannot negate ingrained hatred or blood feuds, but offers a glimmer of perspective enemies might otherwise completely lack.
- May foster unusual teamwork in groups otherwise prone to disharmony.
Lore Expansion Ideas
- Flawed Perception: Masters of the spell could see threads as ‘strong’ or ‘frayed’. Perhaps even sense breaks in the flow suggesting death or profound disruption.
- Echoes of Past Threads: Locations of significance could grant visions of threads belonging to those no longer present, subtly suggesting past tragedies or triumphs influencing the current situation.

Sensory and extra-sensory shifts occurring during the activation of The Tapestry of Connection:
- SIGHT
- What is Perceived: The inner vision of the Tapestry. Threads of light weave and connect the caster to their surroundings, extending out and intermingling with all forms of existence.
- Description: Initially subtle, growing clearer as the spell takes hold. Colors, thickness, and patterns in the threads might reflect different qualities (anger – a jagged red line, kindness – a soft blue tendril)
- Positive: Provides visual anchor to ground the spell’s effect, aiding concentration.
- Negative: Intense external visual inputs (a battle, overly chaotic scene) could disrupt the visualization.
- SOUND
- What is Perceived: A low, rhythmic hum emerges, almost like a quiet pulse within the caster’s own mind. This hum might subtly rise and fall, mirroring the feeling of energy flow within the visualized threads.
- Description: Soothing in its regularity, almost like a heartbeat syncing with a greater rhythm of the universe.
- Positive: Helps block out distractions, reinforcing the feeling of unity.
- Negative: Sudden loud noises would jolt the connection, potentially halting the spell early.
- TOUCH
- What is Perceived: Heightened sense of self within space. Feeling the contours of their meditation pose, the texture of the ground beneath. Each point of contact is like an individual thread of their own existence joining the greater flow.
- Description: Subtle but grounding.
- Positive: Creates an anchor point, combating a feeling of being totally overwhelmed by the “vastness” of the Tapestry.
- Negative: Excessive discomfort (cold, itchy clothing, etc.) can distract the caster, weakening their focus.
- SMELL & TASTE
- Generally Neutral: These senses don’t typically shift under the spell’s influence unless something strong exists in the caster’s immediate environment.
- EXTRA-SENSORY PERCEPTIONS
- What is Perceived: A tangible shift of perspective. A ‘knowing’ beyond sight and sound begins to color the awareness of the caster’s surroundings.
- Description: Highly intuitive and emotional. A previously intimidating crowd may feel less menacing. Nature scenes resonate with peacefulness the caster wouldn’t otherwise feel.
- Positive: Offers tangible proof of the spell’s influence on the mind, encouraging the caster to surrender to the broadened viewpoint.
- Negative: Can be shocking if experiencing the spell for the first time. Too intense a change in perception could even frighten an inexperienced caster.
Threads of Starlight, Whisper of Unity
In the age before memory, in a dawn none now recall, so speaks the legend of the First Weaver. They were of no special tribe, no honored bloodline, so the tale has it. Alone they wandered, weary of the strife that tore kin from kin like brambles against flesh.
One night, in a cave shelter warmed only by thin fire, despair was their only companion. Yet, when sleep closed their eyes, they didn’t walk in darkness. Threads wove around them – starlight given tangible form. Each touched another – bird on high branch, flower at their feet, even the very stones beneath dreamt beneath that woven net of light.
Awakening with dawn was not as before. Not as before… they say the Weaver wept but wept with a bittersweet knowing. In that humble cave, the Tapestry of Connection was gifted… or perhaps remembered. For upon gazing out at their fellow wanderers, those they would have once called ‘other’, each form now thrummed with light, part of that vaster fabric.
Thus, so the story is told, a path other than violence bloomed amidst the thorns. Not out of sudden love, no grand change of heart. From mere understanding. An echo of that single night where all, for a heart’s span, shared in the weaving of the world. For it’s whispered, should one look too long upon the Tapestry, they forget where their own thread ends, losing themselves to the greater pattern.
This is why many fear its teachings, clinging to righteous wrath – their thread held tightly as proof of being. Yet, some still sit under the stars, seeking within the starlight the faint touch of that very first dream.
Moral of the Story: True unity grows not through enforced words or willed deeds, but in the understanding that our strands only make meaning when woven amongst the multitude.
Suggested conversions to other systems:
Call of Cthulhu
- Approach: In a game focused on cosmic horror, this offers a momentary mental respite from the maddening unknown.
- Skill Tie-In: Sanity and/or Occult (tapping into hidden awareness of connection)
- Mechanics:
- To Cast: Successful Skill Roll, difficulty lowered in moments where isolation and brutality would exacerbate Sanity loss.
- Effect: Regains minor Sanity points. Provides temporary bonus on resisting Sanity loss triggered by encounters emphasizing vast uncaring entities, cosmic indifference, or brutal violence against innocents.
Blades in the Dark
- Approach: Ritual aiding social manipulation OR strategic tool in a faction focused on undermining hierarchies.
- Action Type: Likely Resist action using Resolve
- Mechanics:
- To Cast: Requires time in quiet space, difficulty increases if stressed or facing immediate danger.
- Effect: +1d to next interaction aimed at undermining ingrained factional hatreds, or offering aid to an “enemy” for truly desperate survival situations. Critical success might reveal a path towards momentary truce with severe drawbacks.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)
- Approach: Divination spell on Cleric, Druid, maybe even Bard spell lists focused on empathy and unity.
- Mechanics:
- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range: Self or Touch
- Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes
- Effect: Advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Charisma (Persuasion) checks against a group the caster had initial hostility towards. Can be used to bolster another player’s similar attempts through roleplay of extending the unity the caster feels.
Knave
- Approach: Simple but potent spell driven by narrative. Requires little mechanical crunch.
- Mechanics:
- To Cast: The player describes quiet time visualizing the Tapestry. No skill roll.
- Effect: The GM determines one hostile group the caster will struggle to view as enemies as the spell’s effects linger. May simply gain +1d on a relevant task OR require the GM to narrate a complication if immediate violence against that group is attempted.
Fate
- Approach: Focuses on creating scene Aspects or compelling existing Aspects
- Aspect Example: “Linked by Starlight,” “Threads of Shared Struggle”
- Mechanics
- To Cast: Create an Advantage related to recognizing connection to a former adversary, shared goals, etc. This provides the basis to invoke the Aspect in later narrative turns.
- Invoke: To bolster actions where empathy aids conflict resolution, to gain favors where common threads are emphasized, etc.
- Compel: Can compel against the user when confronted with the profound differences separating them from past foes. Or if they assume their understanding guarantees cooperation on the other party’s behalf.
Numenera/Cypher System
- Approach: Either an Esotery of the mind or a unique Cypher found upon an ancient site echoing themes of unity.
- Mechanics:
- Esotery/Item: Offers reduction to difficulty of Intellect tasks aimed at de-escalating tense social situations or aiding those the caster considers hostile.
- Cypher: One-time use Cypher for bolstering a single skill roll relevant to the spell’s themes (resolving stand-offs, sensing shared desires beneath hostility, etc.).
Pathfinder (2nd Edition)
- Approach: Likely divination spell of low level for casters focused on peace or nature. Requires Focus component (a small woven trinket).
- Mechanics:
- Focus Points: Expend 1 Focus Point
- Action: 1 Action (potentially with verbal component in reciting words echoing the visualization)
- Effect: +1d4 bonus to the next skill check focused on non-violent solutions (Diplomacy) or noticing signs of a potential for cooperation among an otherwise adversarial group.
Savage Worlds
- Approach: New Power under appropriate Arcane Backgrounds (belief-based magic, shamanic traditions, etc.)
- Mechanics:
- Power Points: 2 -3
- Rank: Novice, with more potent, area-effect versions at higher tiers
- Effect: User and surrounding targets (allies or chosen foes) receive +2 on Spirit rolls tied to resisting actions based on cruelty, disregard for individual suffering, or factional divides for the next few rounds.
Shadowrun
- Approach: Mental spell within the Hermetic tradition or a rare biofeedback program for Faces prioritizing social solutions.
- Mechanics – Spell
- Drain: Medium Drain to offset its unique, non-damaging focus.
- Effect: +2 dice when social skills aim to bridge factional divides (Corp vs Street), de-escalate violence, or uncover common desires beneath overt hostility.
- Mechanics – Biofeedback Program
- Rating: Medium to reflect its unusual function.
- Effect: +1 modifier to resist manipulation by those relying on in-group/out-group tactics. Offers minor synergy with perception when analyzing visual cues, letting the user sense when unity with them exists on a subconscious level (even within guarded adversaries).
Starfinder
- Approach: Mystic spell or high-tech mental subroutine tailored to empaths/peacekeepers.
- Mechanics – Mystic Spell
- Level: 1st -2nd level.
- Effect: Bonus to Diplomacy or Culture checks aimed at resolving conflicts with shared roots or for offering solace amidst situations emphasizing isolation/loss. Additionally, might give resistance to mental effects playing on division.
- Mechanics – Tech
- Item Level: Low, accessible.
- Effect: Built into visors or a temporary mind-altering subroutine. Grants Advantage on skill checks to undermine factionalism, notice signs of cooperation in rival groups, or make empathetic pleas for a moment of understanding.
Traveller
- Approach: Psionic ability of a secretive order OR lore fragment of extinct, unity-focused civilization.
- Mechanics:
- Psionic Skill: New skill of specialized focus with difficulty based on mental stats, active countermeasures a target employs, and how deeply ingrained hatreds run. * Ancient Lore: Found as text on old data devices. Deciphering it takes specialized skills, offers glimpses of how empathy-inducing tech once functioned, potentially granting inspiration for building similar tools.
Warhammer (Both Fantasy & 40k)
- Approach – Warhammer Fantasy: Low-level lore spell accessible to hedge witches or specific deities emphasizing a unity theme. Highly prone to misperception with potential for minor blessings or curses.
- Approach – Warhammer 40k: Forbidden Psyker ability (highly controlled usage) OR Warp-tainted power whispered by cultists promising deceptive brotherhood. High risk of Corruption.
- Mechanics:
- Effect: Advantage on Fellowship/Charm-type tests while under the spell. However, each round also carries a small chance of the caster seeing unsettling, Warp-tainted aspects of a chosen target’s psyche or attracting unwanted attention.
