Lore:
- Originating from the active Sleih Beggey settlements nestled in the coastal hills and ancient barrows of the world of Saṃsāra, this sash is a traditional product of domestic fairy magic.
- The stocky domestic fairies known as the Sleigh Veggy or Ferrishyn do not craft weapons; instead, they focus on textile and domestic enchantments to create a feeling of absolute security and familiarity within their underground burghs.
- Woven during the winter solstice when the Sleih Beggey gather at their ancestral hearths, the sash absorbs the shared memories, comforts, and domestic stability of the mound, making it feel to the wearer like they are sitting in the safest corner of their childhood home.
- They are often given to young Sleih Beggey venturing away from the mound for the first time, or to surface-dwellers who have performed a great, non-violent service for the Little People.
- It is numbered “774” by the burgh-weavers of the Glen Maye enclave, identifying it as a common piece intended to ease the transition for those moving between the surface and the burgh.
Description:
- A wide, comfortable utility sash crafted from thick, cross-stitched badger-hide leather (sourced non-violently by gathering non-threat animals) and lined with the soft, gathered fleece of wild moorland sheep.
- The forearm length sash (intended to be worn at the waist or over one shoulder) features intricate, moss-green thread embroidery depicting twisting Manx knotwork, running triskelion emblems, and stylized domestic objects like porridge bowls and hearth-bell symbols.
- It is decorated with three miniature bronze hawk-bells stamped with triskelions, which produce a synchronized, quiet chime tuned to a soothing fairy pitch.
- A small, polished pebble of fairy-struck beach quartz that hums with gentle earth-warmth is hung from a braided heather-grass tether near the center.
- The item constantly exhales the faint, comforting fragrance of peat smoke, sweet heather honey, lanolin, and a sharp mineral scent of fresh, safe burgh soil, remaining surprisingly supple and water-repellent.

- Required Attunement: Short Rest (spend 1 hour sitting quietly with the sash while listening to the internal hum of the quartz and the aroma of the hearth, visualizing home)
- Component Requirements: Consumes no fuel; occasional brushing with lanolin or animal fat and an occasional offering of bread crumbs or milk poured over the central triskelion to keep the Sleih Beggey favor alive.
Passive Magics:
- Burgh-Hearth Attunement: While attuned and worn, the avatar gains a +2 bonus to all Perception and Insight checks to evaluate terrain stability, detect hidden subterranean chambers or burrow entrances, navigate darkness, and understand domestic fey customs. The sash also neutralizes any mundane claustrophobic panic from enclosed spaces.
- Comfort of the Compact: As long as the sash remains functional and in favor, the avatar is completely immune to non-magical and non-Tier 1 fatigue, nausea, and environmental exhaustion caused by cold, damp, and poor air. When resting for at least one hour in any stable, roofed structure, the avatar recovers non-magical damage at double the standard rate.
- Echo of Home-Taste: Whenever the avatar consumes mundane food or drink while wearing the sash, it tastes comforting, rich, and intensely familiar—like their preferred home-cooked meals—and neutralizes non-magical stagnation or simple toxins (e.g., bad well water or spoiled rations), though it does not purify significant poison.
Activable Magics:
- Heather-Breeze Call: (Active property – Sonic, Manipulate) Frequency: 3/Long Rest. Shaking the sash’s bronze bells and quartz hum causes a synchronized chime, audible only to the user and attuned avians/Little People within 1 mile. Any animal companion or domesticated creature trained in falconry immediately detects the user’s exact location and navigates home at double speed, ignoring navigational disorientation from fog, rain, or gloom.
- Burrow-Sprite Fetch: (Active property – Manipulate, Primal) Frequency: 2/Short or Long Rest. Directing the sash’s magical empathy towards a narrow burrow, crevice, pipe, or drain up to 30 feet deep commands a small domestic fairy spirit to compress slightly and retrieve an unattended object of Bulk L or negligible weight, returning it safely to the gauntlet.
- Sleigh’s Hearth Flurry: (Active property – Illusion, Primal) Frequency: 1/Short or Long Rest. As an action, command your avian companion or domestic animal to dive at an adversary within 30 feet. The creature attacks surrounded by flickering, illusory fairy embers, forcing the target to succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or become blinded and distracted until the start of the user’s next turn.

Procurement and Markets for the Burgh-Woven Hearth-Warmth Sash
On the world of Saṃsāra, common domestic talismans carrying the true hearth-magic of the Sleih Beggey rarely sit on shelves in standard municipal general stores. Because the magic of the Ferrishyn relies on hospitality, domestic comfort, and mutual respect, trading for an item infused with the familiarity of the earthen mounds requires seeking out vendors tied to pastoral routes, subterranean networks, or domestic fey compacts.
1. Earthen Barrows and Burgh-Gate Exchanges
The primary and most authentic venue for acquiring this sash is at the boundary markets established just outside active Sleih Beggey mound complexes. These turf-walled, subterranean-adjacent markets are held in sheltered hollows, sunken drovers’ roads, or beneath coastal barrows where the Little People interact with surface folk.
- How the Item Is Presented: The sashes are not locked in display cabinets; they hang from polished juniper pegs near communal peat braziers so prospective owners can feel their warmth and smell the familiar peat-and-honey aroma. A buyer is expected to sit at the hearth, take a sip of fresh buttermilk or spring water, and describe the home they long for before a Sleih Beggey elder will agree to hand over the sash. Selling one to an individual who demonstrates cruel, restless, or house-breaking tendencies is considered an ill omen.
- Payment Form: Sleih Beggey artisans strongly prefer domestic barter and practical gifts over metal currency.
Cost in Saṃsāra:
- Barter (Preferred): 2 crocks of clover honey, 5 stones of milled barley flour, and a well-balanced kitchen tool or brass hearth kettle in good working order.
- Coin/Credit Equivalent: ~45–65 standard World Bank credit chits (accepted mostly to buy surface tools and salt).
2. Drover Post-Houses and Moorland Caravanserais
Along the mist-shrouded highland trade corridors and terrace drovers’ paths, isolated coaching inns and post-houses often double as trading posts. Here, wayfarers, terrace ditch-runners, and surface guides gather around common hearths to exchange gear suited for braving bitter mountain passes and subterranean tunnels.
- How the Item Is Presented: The sash is kept behind the innkeeper’s heavy oak tap-counter alongside sheep dips, oiled wool cloaks, and travel charms. It is marketed as an indispensable comfort piece for homesick scouts, solitary messengers, and subterranean miners susceptible to cave-panic.
- Payment Form: Standard frontier scrip, barter goods, or hard currency.
Cost in Saṃsāra:
- Purchase Price: 70–90 standard World Bank credit chits.
- Pawn/Resale Value: An innkeeper will buy a clean, well-cared-for sash from a traveling avatar for 35–45 chits, provided the quartz pebble still hums with earth-warmth.
3. Antiquarians and Curio Pantries in Frontier Settlements
In frontier towns flanking deep mineheads or ancient excavation sites, boutique apothecaries and curio pantries handle domestic relics salvaged from forgotten barrows or traded by retiring pioneers.
- How the Item Is Presented: Stored inside glass-topped cedar chests alongside herbal sachets and comfort draughts, the sash is cataloged as a domestic warding textile. The merchant typically demonstrates its authenticity by sprinkling cold well water over the rawhide to show its water-repellent properties, or inviting the patron to hold the quartz bead to feel the steady hearth-heat.
- Payment Form: Bank vouchers, engineering tokens, or precious metal ingots.
Cost in Saṃsāra:
- Retail Price: 95–120 standard World Bank credit chits.
- Refurbished/Second-Hand: A faded or slightly stiff sash needing fresh lanolin treatment can be acquired for 50–60 chits, often purchased by junior surveyors preparing for long postings underground.
Roleplay Applications of the Hearth-Warmth Sash Across Saṃsāra
On the world of Saṃsāra, the Sleih Beggey 774 of the Burgh-Woven Hearth-Warmth Sash is fundamentally rooted in the concept of familiarity—the supernatural preservation of domestic calm, ancestral belonging, and bodily stability in the most alien, hostile conditions. Its application does not stem from aggressive battlefield lethality, but from turning chaotic, disorienting environments into spaces that feel manageable, safe, and intuitively navigable.
1. Claustrophobic Subterranean Deeps, Abandoned Mines, and Sunken Vaults
In deep subterranean shafts where darkness, stale air, and seismic pressure induce crushing terror in surface-dwellers, the sash acts as an emotional and physiological anchor.
Defensive & Roleplay Focus (Sanctuary & Stability): When the air turns foul and sulfurous, or when a sudden rockfall seals the party within a pitch-black collapse chamber, the wielder rests their hand over the vibrating beach-quartz pebble. The supernatural warmth of the burgh hearth counteracts hyperventilation, chilling damp, and claustrophobia, projecting a calm aura of domestic sanctuary to nearby companions. Roleplay emphasizes grounding the expedition: the wielder breaks hard, stale travel rations that taste miraculously like fresh, buttered hearth-bread (Echo of Home-Taste), sustaining morale while calculating escape vectors. When seeking exits, Burgh-Hearth Attunement allows the avatar to brush the stone walls with their fingertips, intuitively feeling hollow acoustic voids and natural burgh-chimneys as if wandering their own family home in the dark.
Offensive & Roleplay Focus (Tactical Retrieval & Disruption): When confronted in narrow tunnels by predatory cave-stalkers or subterranean saboteurs, the wielder activates Sleigh’s Hearth Flurry. Commanding an animal companion, hunting bird, or conjured hearth-wisp, they send it darting into the face of a choke-point guard. Shimmering, illusory fairy sparks mimic the snapping embers of an untended fireplace, dazzling the target’s dark-adapted vision and allowing allies to advance or retreat. If an adversary holds an iron portcullis crank, ventilation lever, or explosive fuse behind an impassable crevice, the user employs Burrow-Sprite Fetch, directing the domestic spirit through gaps to seize the mechanism or disarm the trap from safety.
2. High-Altitude Cloud-Terraces, Glacial Passes, and Sleet Gales
On wind-scoured agricultural terraces and freezing highland tracks, the sash acts as an indispensable survival mantle against freezing rain, high altitude, and disorientation.
Defensive & Roleplay Focus (Weather Immunity & Hearth Rest): While climbing exposed stone revetments during a blinding mountain squall, the wearer wraps the badger-hide bandolier securely over their chest. The sheared moorland fleece and peat-infused leather repel sleet and icy spray, neutralizing the onset of exposure, hypothermia, and environmental exhaustion (Comfort of the Compact). In roleplay, the character moves without the trembling hesitance typical of exposed heights, breathing steadily as though sitting beside a warm stove. When the party takes shelter in a rudimentary stone drover’s hut, the sash transforms the drafty shelter into an efficient recuperation haven, doubling recovery rates for everyone resting within the threshold.
Offensive & Roleplay Focus (Ambush Breaking & Recall): If mountain bandits or territorial griffon-kin attack from the fog, the wielder shakes the sash’s stamped bronze bells to trigger Heather-Breeze Call. The clear, supernatural chime pierces howling gale-force winds, instantly guiding scattered scouts or a hunting raptor through blinding cloud banks straight to the wearer’s position at double speed to turn the tide. In skirmishes along precipitous ledges, the avatar channels Sleigh’s Hearth Flurry to startle aggressive climbers right at the rock lip, distracting them with swirling embers so they lose footing or abandon their vantage point.
3. Toxic Swamps, Stagnant Mudflats, and Floodplain Sinks
In fetid wetlands where malaria, murky footing, and contaminated water threaten prolonged expeditions, the sash provides biological and spatial security.
Defensive & Roleplay Focus (Purification & Sensory Awareness): Wading through waist-deep, stagnant marshland, the avatar relies on Echo of Home-Taste to safely hydrate, sipping muddy, lukewarm pool water that passes their lips tasting clean, sweet, and cool as a highland spring while neutralizing minor waterborne contagions. As toxic marsh gasses and rot-stench cause allies to choke, the wielder remains clear-headed, shielded by the persistent aroma of peat smoke and dried heather. Furthermore, Burgh-Hearth Attunement lets the avatar read subtle water ripples and submerged soil compaction, instinctively distinguishing firm underwater gravel bars from swallowing quicksand.
Offensive & Roleplay Focus (Extraction & Hazard Control): When ambushed by mire-lurkers submerged beneath opaque duckweed, the wielder avoids close-quarters grappling by maintaining distance. If a fallen ally drops a medical kit, survey ledger, or sidearm into murky, stagnant mud, the user invokes Burrow-Sprite Fetch, sending the fairy spirit beneath the roots and muck to retrieve the gear before it sinks beyond reach. During a retreat through tall reeds, the wielder launches Sleigh’s Hearth Flurry toward tracking hounds or pursuit beasts; the sudden burst of crackling domestic fairy sparks snaps the animals’ focus, triggering prey confusion and allowing the party to break line of sight cleanly.

Perception of Activation:
- Visual Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The embroidered moss-green knotwork, triskelions, and stylized steaming bowls along the badger-hide ignite with a steady, soothing emerald-green luminescence. The suspended fairy-struck quartz pebble flares with a deep, radiant amber-gold glow that pulses at the calm tempo of a resting heartbeat. A thin, shimmering heat shimmer rises from the fleece edges, casting soft golden reflections across the user’s torso and arms.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers see the sash illuminate with a warm, diffuse lantern-like halo. The green thread work seems to writhe softly like living moss, while the amber light from the quartz bead casts long, cozy fireplace shadows into the surrounding room or tunnel.
- Positives: Provides soft, non-blinding illumination in pitch darkness that clearly defines immediate terrain without ruining dark-adapted vision.
- Negatives: The luminous green embroidery and glowing amber stone make stealth impossible in dim light, telegraphing the wearer’s presence.
- Auditory Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The three miniature bronze bells do not sound like jarring metal, but rather produce an ultra-gentle, melodic chime that echoes like wind chimes over a distant summer meadow. Beneath the chimes, the user hears the faint, rhythmic crackle and gentle hiss of dry birch logs burning on a quiet hearth.
- Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within five paces hears a delicate, harmonic bronze tinkle, accompanied by an odd, soothing background murmur resembling hushed fireside conversation and bubbling broth.
- Positives: Creates an acoustic barrier against howling cave winds or subterranean echoes, calming panicked breathing and racing pulses.

- Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders smell an unmistakable draft of chimney smoke, beeswax, and sweet dried lavender blooming out from the wielder, overpowering the damp, moldy rot of caves or stagnant muck.
- Positives: Thoroughly masks noxious subterranean sewer gas, damp decay, and mild sulfur stenches with familiar domestic warmth.
- Negatives: The sweet, rich scent of baking bread and honey can attract starving burrow beasts, vermin swarms, or keen-nosed predators.
- Gustatory Perception:
- User’s Perspective: A rich, comforting warmth coats the user’s palate, leaving an unmistakable lingering taste of honeyed oat porridge and sweet, buttery shortbread on the back of the tongue.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers experience no direct taste, though individuals within arm’s reach often report a sudden phantom hint of roasted grains or hot spiced cider in the air.
- Positives: Subdues hunger pangs and completely washes away the sour, metallic taste of fear, bile, or foul stagnant water.
- Negatives: Leaves a persistent craving for solid, hot home-cooked meals, making dry, chalky iron rations taste doubly unappealing once the magic fades.
- Tactile Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The badger-hide relaxes, becoming buttery-soft and supple against the body, while the sheared moorland fleece warms to the exact temperature of a freshly washed woolen quilt pulled straight from a fireside rack. A deep, steady micro-vibration thrums through the quartz bead, radiating calming warmth into the ribs or shoulder.
- Observer’s Perspective: Brushing against the active sash feels like touching a slumbering, purring animal or a warm brick wrapped in flannel.
- Positives: Instantly eases muscle tension, shivering from hypothermia, damp chills, and joint stiffness caused by cold subterranean air.
- Negatives: The sudden, overwhelming sensation of heavy, relaxed comfort can induce mild drowsiness or a brief sluggishness to draw weapons quickly.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Ancestral Hearth-Grounding (Soul Tether):
- User’s Perspective: The wearer feels an immediate psychological shift—the alien stone of a deep abyss or the terrifying void of a mountain chasm recedes, replaced by an overwhelming internal sensation of being curled up on the rug of one’s childhood home. Fear of cave-ins, darkness, and isolation is entirely extinguished.
- Observer’s Perspective: Telepaths or creatures attuned to primal fey energies sense the wearer’s aura settle into a dense, immovable anchor of domestic tranquility, appearing psionically as an unshakeable stone hearthfire.
- Positives: Complete mental resilience against supernatural dread, isolation psychosis, and panic born of claustrophobia.
- Negatives: Creates an irrational sense of complacency, making the avatar reluctant to flee dangerous structures because the area “feels like home.”
- Domestic Empathy (Sanctuary Mapping):
- User’s Perspective: The surrounding physical geography manifests in the user’s mind’s eye not as threatening rock or wild brush, but as a cozy household floor plan. Cave alcoves register as “pantries,” natural stone shelves feel like “mantels,” and hidden tunnels reveal themselves as “hallways,” allowing intuitive, effortless mental navigation of unfamiliar subterranean spaces.
- Observer’s Perspective: Diviners sense a localized web of harmless domestic intention radiating outward, as though the wielder is welcoming the cold world into their private parlor.
- Positives: Grants an innate, instant awareness of concealed doorways, burrow exits, and safe sleeping nooks in otherwise hostile terrain.
- Negatives: Can lead the user to misjudge natural lethality, subconsciously treating unstable rock shelves or monster dens as benign domestic furniture.
- Ancestral Hearth-Grounding (Soul Tether):
Crafting Recipe: Sleih Beggey 774 of the Burgh-Woven Hearth-Warmth Sash
Materials Needed:
- Cured Russet Badger-Hide (3 square feet) – Sourced ethically from naturally deceased badgers, chosen for high suppleness and dense fiber structure to form the base sash.
- Sheared Moorland Sheep Fleece (2 square feet) – Unbleached, grease-rich, lanolin-heavy fleece from high-pasture flocks to form the insulating inner lining.
- Casting Bell Bronze Ingot (4 ounces) – High-copper, tin-balanced bronze alloy blended specifically for warm, clear acoustic resonance.

- Earthen Smolder-Crock with Perforated Lid – For containing low-temperature peat smolder during the final curing infusion.
Skill Requirements:
- Leatherworking / Tailoring: Level 4 or higher – Competence required to cross-stitch thick badger-hide to delicate sheared fleece without puckering, ensuring a water-tight seam.
- Jewelcrafting / Metallurgy: Level 3 or higher – Precision needed to cast, tune, and chase miniature bronze bells to the specific harmonic frequency favored by the Ferrishyn.
- Art/Craft (Embroidery and Folk Knotwork): Level 3 or higher – Capability to accurately stitch continuous Manx triskelion loops and steaming bowl pictograms without breaking the runic flow.
- Sleih Beggey Lore / Folk Rites: Level 2 or higher – Familiarity with domestic fairy compacts, hospitality etiquette, and hearth-blessing invocations to bind the item’s ambient aura.
Crafting Steps:
- Preparation and Tanning of the Base Materials:
- Clean and soften the cured badger-hide using a blend of lanolin salve and raw honey, rubbing the grain until the hide becomes pliable and warm to the touch.
- Trim the hide into a tapered diagonal sash pattern measuring roughly four to five inches wide and five feet long.
- Cut the sheared moorland fleece to match the inner face of the sash, leaving a quarter-inch margin along the perimeter for folded seams.
- Casting and Tuning the Bronze Chime-Bells:
- Melt the casting bell bronze in the clay crucible over a hardwood charcoal fire.
- Pour the molten bronze into three pre-formed two-part molds shaped as miniature pear-shaped hawk-bells.
- Once cooled, extract the castings, clean off the flashing with files, and use the steel gravers to chase running triskelion emblems onto each bell’s exterior shell.
- Tune each bell’s internal clapper with fine jewelers’ files until shaking them produces a soft, harmonious three-tone chord that resonates without harsh clatter.
- Embroidering the Domestic Motifs:
- Using the copper-tipped needle and moss-green linen thread, trace and embroider continuous Manx knotwork along the outer face of the badger-hide.
- Work the central emblems into the pattern: alternating triskelions, traditional open hearth-bell motifs, and stylized steaming porridge bowls.
- Rub the back of the embroidered hide with the consecrated hearth-ash and quartz powder, pressing the dust directly into the stitch-holes to seat the fey resonance.
- Assembly and Tether Attachment:
- Lay the sheared fleece against the inner badger-hide, turning the edges inward to protect the wool roots.
- Using heavy harness needles and waxed linen thread, saddle-stitch the fleece lining to the outer badger-hide with even, water-resistant cross-stitches.
- Braid the moorland heather-grass together with the fine silver wire to form a sturdy, three-strand hanging tether.
- Drill a minute suspension channel through the top of the fairy-struck beach quartz pebble, thread the heather-silver braid through, and knot it firmly.
- Anchor the three tuned bronze bells and the suspended quartz pebble onto the center-left breast section of the sash using reinforced leather thongs.
- Smolder-Infusion and Hearth-Activation Compact:
- Place the assembled sash loosely inside the earthen smolder-crock alongside a smoldering brick of mountain peat. Cover with the lid and leave it to smoke for twelve hours, allowing the peat-oil vapor to deeply saturate the leather and fleece.
- Remove the sash and lay it before a live, domestic indoor hearth.
- Set the bowl of fresh ewe’s milk and butter beside the sash as a token of hospitality to the Sleih Beggey.
- Recite the traditional Manx hearth-compact verses, invoking the stocky subterranean builders of the burghs and asking that the mantle carry the warmth, safety, and nourishment of the home into alien wilds.
- As the invocation concludes, pour three drops of milk over the central triskelion knot. If properly executed, the embroidered knotwork and the quartz pebble will ignite with a warm, steady amber-and-emerald glow, the three bronze bells will chime once in clear unison without being touched, and the scent of freshly baked barley bread will rise from the wool.
Wide Torso-Strap of Great Fire-Warmth Woven Underneath Grass-Mounds
by the Short Thick People Who Drink Milk and Hate the Wind
In the days when the sky was still very thick like boiling porridge and the sun had not learned to walk straight upon the ridges, the world was full of very large shivering. The people who lived on the upper dirt had no roofs upon their houses, and their feet were always gray and wet from the cold rain that fell sideways out of the gray clouds. When night came over the hills, the wind was like a dog with iron teeth that bit the noses and the ears of the children, and all the grandfathers sat in the mud and made very loud coughing noises until their chests broke open.
Now, deep under the green turf-mounds where the sheep chewed the yellow flowers, there lived the Short Thick Men whose beards touched their knees. These were the Little Underground People of the Burghs, who are called the Ferrishyn by the men of three thumbs, and their houses were very round, very dry, and full of sweet peat-smoke that never went out. Inside their round halls under the dirt, nobody ever sneezed, and nobody ever had cold fingers, because they had a great domestic compact with the Little Stone of Fire that sleepeth inside the sand.
There was among the upper-dirt people a young ditch-digger named Corryn of the Weak Bones. His ribs were very thin, like the wicker-baskets used to carry dead fish, and he wept much because whenever he went outside to dig the water-ditches, his teeth hit together like two river-pebbles in a tin pail. His mother said to him: “Go to the round hole under the high barrow where the Little Men knock with their bronze hammers. Take them this crock of unskimmed ewe-water and this piece of yellow fat from the churn. Speak soft words into the grass-roots, or else the frost-giant will chew your ears off before the barley grows tall.”
Corryn took the ewe-water and the churn-fat, though his knees made a clicking noise from fear. He crawled on his belly like a blind worm into the narrow ditch where the wild heather grew thickest. He put his mouth to an opening between three round quartz stones and poured the sweet ewe-water into the dark earth. He cried out: “O you subterranean short-legged masters of the warm fireplace! The wind upon the hill is biting the upper-peoples until our bones turn into icicles! We have no stone-caps to our heads, and our bread is like cold mud in our teeth! Sell us one small ember of your underground pot, or we will all turn into white statues before the two-horned moon dieth!”
The Little Underground People were eating their night-porridge out of bronze dishes. They heard the ewe-water splashing down upon their ceiling-beams. A very old, broad-faced maker of woven bands, whose eyebrows were like two gray caterpillars resting on his nose, pushed his head up through a clump of bilberry moss. He blinked his small round eyes at Corryn and spat out a piece of heather-leaf.
“You upper-dirt ditch-runners have very noisy mouths and very wet shirts,” said the mound-weaver. “You build high towers of crooked sticks and then cry to the sky when the gale-wind bloweth them flat. You cannot hold the living fireplace in a wicker-basket, you squash-headed boy. If you carry raw fire into the freezing air, the wind-demon will only blow the sparks into your dry thatch and burn down your bed. To keep warm, a man must carry the remembrance of his grandmother’s hearth tied around his ribs.”
Corryn wiped the cold water from his chin and bowed his head three times until his nose touched the wet clay. “Teach my ribs how to remember the dry room, O maker of bronze bells, for my sisters are turning blue by the ditch-side.”
Then the Ferrishyn took pity on the shivering mud-boy because the ewe-water was thick and sweet. He pulled Corryn by the thumb into the earth-belly. In the great central burgh, where thirty-and-three peat-fires were burning in a ring and making a sweet smell of honeyed earth, the Little People set about to make the wide torso-strap of ancestral familiarity.
First, they went into the deep sleeping-chambers of the badgers. They did not strike the badgers with iron clubs, for the Sleih Beggey make no war upon the burrow-beasts; instead, they gathered the hide of an ancient badger-grandfather who had died peacefully in his sleep during the third solstice of the Great Thaw. They tanned this hide not with sharp acid, but with the sour red blood of the mountain bilberry and the salt-crust dried by the summer sea, until the badger-skin was as soft as a cooked turnip and could not be pierced by the cold thorn.
Next, they took the thick sheared fleece of the mountain moor-sheep—not the sheep that live in wet pens, but the wild horned sheep that sleep on the high dry crags where the clouds do not sit. They cleaned the fleece with wild lanolin until it exhaled the heavy, grease-warm perfume of the fold, and they lined the belly-side of the broad band so that the cold air could find no crack between the leather and the human flesh.
Then the smiths of the low burgh brought out their clay melting-pots. They melted bell-bronze—rich in red copper, with just enough white tin to make it sing like a summer bird—and they cast three miniature pear-bells. Upon the outer shell of each bell, the broad-faced weaver stamped the Three-Legged Rolling Wheel, which is the mark of the island that never falls over, and he tuned the little clappers with a fish-bone file until they sounded together in a sweet, soft chord that sounded like children laughing around a porridge-kettle.
Along the front of the badger-hide, the women of the mound stitched long continuous snakes of moss-green river-flax. They embroidered the running triskelion loops, the shape of the three-legged cooking pot, and the sign of the steaming porridge-bowl, so that anyone who looked upon the strap would immediately think of eating hot food in a dry room. Inside the knotwork, they rubbed the dry, gray ash taken from the ancestral hearth that had not gone cold since the first stone fell down from the moon.
Lastly, the weaver took Corryn to the edge of the subterranean wave where the underground salt-tide washes the fairy-beach. There, where the lightning-serpents of the deep earth strike the sand, he picked up a smooth, oval pebble of fairy-struck beach-quartz. The stone did not look cold like river-rock; it trembled in the palm like a small warm bird, holding inside its belly a tiny amber spark of unbroken summer sun. The weaver took a hank of mountain heather-grass, braided it together with seven strands of fine silver wire pulled from the burgh’s secret veins, and tied the singing quartz pebble to the breast of the sash, beside the three bronze hawk-bells.
When all was assembled, the elders placed the band of badger-hide and wool into a deep clay smolder-crock filled with smoldering highland turf. For twelve turns of the shadow-dial, the sash drank the black peat-oil vapor until its skin was rich, brown, and could never rot. Then they pulled it forth and laid it across the knees of Corryn of the Weak Bones.
“This is the band numbered seven hundred seventy-four,” said the old weaver, tapping the bronze bells with his fingernail. “It is not a shield to beat back the spears of the giant-warriors, nor is it a knife to open the throat of the wild boar. It is the mantle of the Burgh-Hearth. Wear it about your ribs or over your left shoulder when you walk through the weeping lands. When the freezing rain falleth, it will make your blood feel as though you are sitting upon a dry fleece beside your mother’s kettle. When you drink ditch-water, it will taste of fresh butter and roasted oats. When the darkness in the cave squeezes your head like an iron band, the bells will ring the song of the safe room, and the rock will open its secret cracks to your fingers as if they were the latches of your own barn doors.”
Corryn strapped the wide band over his shoulder and bound it at his waist. Instantly, a deep amber light shone from the heart of the quartz pebble, and the green threadwork along the badger-skin flared like green embers in a chimney. The cold shivering left his teeth in that very second. His skin grew warm and soft, smelling of peat-smoke, honey, and dry wool, and the bitter mountain wind outside the burgh-gate tasted upon his tongue like a warm bowl of salted barley broth.
He climbed out of the turf-mound and returned to the upper-dirt village of the ditch-peoples. The great snow-storm was howling across the mountain passes, and the houses of mud were collapsing under the white weight. But Corryn did not shiver. He walked among the weeping people, and wherever he stood, the smell of fresh-baked bread and burning birch-wood drifted out from his cloak, driving away the sickness-cough and calming the screaming babies.
When the mountain wolves and the iron-toothed frost-beasts smelled the warm butter and the smoke upon him, they rushed out of the dark pine-trees to tear him into red meat. But Corryn did not run; he shook the three bronze bells at his breast. A sudden, synchronized chime—melodic like a hundred hearth-fires crackling together—burst across the snow. A cloud of bright, illusory fairy sparks swarmed around the heads of the charging beasts, dancing in their eyes and blinding them until they fell over the cliffs into the river-chasm, believing the whole world had turned into a burning kitchen.
Then Corryn guided forty-and-four families through the blinding blizzard, leading them along the sheer terrace-ledges where the fog was like white milk. Though none could see their own boots, Corryn pressed his gloved fingers against the frozen shale. Through the magic of the sash, the mountain did not feel like a wild stone monster, but like the familiar wooden floorboards of his ancestral dwelling; he knew where every ledge turned, where every stone was loose, and where the dry hollows were scooped out of the cliff-wall. He led them safely into the deep, roofed dry-caves of the south, where not one child died of the cold lung.
For ninety-and-nine years, Corryn wore the Burgh-Woven Hearth-Warmth Sash. He never sneezed; his porridge was never sour; and even when he was an ancient grandfather with hair like a snow-drift, his ribs remained as warm as an oven on baking day. When he finally closed his eyes to sleep his last sleep, the people did not bury the sash in the cold dirt; they passed it to the eldest daughter of the terrace-watchers, so that the ancestral fire of the Little People might never be extinguished among those who walk in the high wind.
Moral of the Story: He who armeth himself only with hard iron and cold stone will freeze to death in his own armor when the great winter cometh, but he who carryeth the peaceful memory of the domestic hearth wrapped around his ribs will find a safe dwelling-place even in the coldest wilderness and turn the most alien stone into his own home.
