Shimenawa 107 of the Primordial Germline

Item Tier and Rarity: Common (Tier 1)

Specific Gear Slot: Waist Slot

Lore:

  • When displaced souls first materialized across the 73 island continents of Saṃsāra, those carrying memories of cellular genesis, sterile incubation, and embryonic biology sought tangible methods to protect vulnerable life from pervasive wild magic radiation.
  • Recognizing that feral beasts and local monsters often suffered chaotic mutations or premature developmental blight due to high ambient magic pressure, early bio-arcanists combined sacred boundary rites with biological preservation techniques.
  • Using fluid collectors, early healers drew nutritious yolk-albumen from giant marsh-strider clutches and combined it with boiled resin from ancient shoreline trees to seal hand-spun marsh reed cordage.
  • The hanging zigzagging paper markers were soaked in diluted amniotic distillates and inscribed with cellular cleavage runes, creating a portable threshold dedicated to shielding fragile biological tissue, emerging broods, and cellular development from toxic blights and spiritual decay.

Physical Description:

  • The item is a supple, two-ply twisted waist cord measuring just under six feet in length, braided from dried marsh rushes and soft bast fibers that have been cured in a pale, amber-tinted bio-resin.
  • At the center of the belt sits an egg-shaped, kiln-fired ceramic nodule with a smooth glazed surface, featuring a small oval viewport that reveals a single coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal cell pulsing with a faint, rhythmic heartbeat-like cadence.
  • Suspended evenly on either side of the central egg clasp are four accordion-folded vellum slips that bear faint, hand-inked cross-sectional diagrams of dividing cellular blastomeres and embryonic arches.
  • Two soft, frayed tassels hang from the front knot, bound at their base with waxed silk thread, emitting a clean, subtle aroma of beeswax, fresh saline, and sweet incubation mulch whenever the avatar breathes or moves.

Item Detailed Stats:

  • Item Health Points: Maximum avatar hit points plus 10 (calculated from 10 resilience multiplied by Tier 1).
  • Attuned Armor Check (AC): +1 AC bonus added to the avatar’s worn Armor Check.
  • Physical Weight: 2 pounds mundane weight (becomes 0 pounds if placed inside personal extradimensional storage containers).
  • Attunement Time: 1 minute of uninterrupted focus (requires a 10-minute ritual if recovering from being deactivated by a targeted item attack).
  • Attunement Limit: Occupies 1 attuned gear slot of the 10 allowable attuned items openly worn by a Tier 1 avatar.
  • Degradation Threshold: Functions at full capability until reduced to 5 or fewer Hit Points; at 5 HP or below, the bio-resin cracks, disabling all activable properties until repaired by an artisan with biological or alchemical crafting skills.
  • Destruction Remnants: If reduced to 0 Hit Points, the item is destroyed, leaving behind 1 Tier 1 magic crystal cell and 2 pounds of inert fiber cord.

Passive Magic Properties:

  • Incubator’s Resilient Cradle: Any non-viable, fragile, or developing biological specimen (such as fertilized eggs, larval sacs, seeds, or delicate cell cultures) carried within a pouch or container worn directly on the belt is shielded from ambient temperature extremes, remaining at ideal developmental warmth even in freezing blizzards or scorching wastes.
  • Amniotic Ward: The avatar gains a +1 bonus on saving throws against biological poisons, natural rot, parasitic infections, and diseases carried by swamp-dwelling insects or tainted water.
  • Mitotic Equilibrium: The rhythmic pulse of the central crystal calms the wearer’s involuntary nervous responses, providing a +1 bonus to saving throws against being dazed or shaken by violent concussive shocks or auditory distress.

Activable Magic Properties:

  • Cordon of the Gestation Ring: As an action, the avatar touches the ceramic egg clasp and speaks an incantation, spending 1 charge to project a 5-foot-radius shimmering amniotic perimeter on the ground for 10 minutes; within this circle, any creature recovering from the bleeding, wounded, or fatigued condition ignores environmental weather penalties, and tiny crawling larvae, maggots, or fungal parasites cannot enter or manifest within the ring. (The item holds 3 charges and recovers 1 expended charge upon completing a full long rest; expending the final charge requires a d20 roll, where rolling a 1 fractures the ceramic egg casing and suppresses activable abilities until repaired).
  • Blastocyst Shield: As a prepared reaction taken when an ally within 5 feet is struck by an attack dealing necrotic or acid damage, the wearer directs one of the vellum markers to flare with translucent amber light, reducing the incoming damage by 1d4 points (the tier 1 die) as a momentary shield of hardened albumen cushions the blow.
  • Cleavage Trace: As an action, the wearer unties the cord and lays it in a circle around an unconscious or critically injured creature; for 1 hour, the cord stabilizes the occupant’s cellular functions, preventing the target from losing hit points due to ambient environmental degradation or passive bleeding while resting inside the boundary.

Shops, Commerce, and Acquisition of the Embryological Shimenawa

  • Bio-Alchemical Laboratories and Apothecary Nurseries: Located in the academic and medical quarters of major coastal cities, these establishments are run by licensed chirurgeons, alchemical breeders, and apothecaries. The interior shelves are packed with glass preservation jars, distilled fluid tanks, incubation lamps, and terrariums holding rare flora and fauna clutches. When an avatar enters seeking the Shimenawa 107 of the Primordial Germline, the proprietor inspects the ceramic egg housing and the clarity of the vellum blastomere diagrams to confirm proper bio-insulation. The standard purchase price ranges between 13 and 17 gold pieces. If the buyer is an accredited member of the Apothecaries and Naturalists Guild, they receive the standard guild discount of 10% multiplied by their tier level (a 10% price reduction for a Tier 1 avatar, lowering a 15 gold asking price to 13 gold and 5 silver). When selling the cord to a laboratory, the chirurgeon conducts a fluid swab to ensure no fungal rot has corrupted the cured reeds, offering 7 to 9 gold pieces transferred directly into the seller’s World Bank account with the formal receipt logged for city sanitary oversight.
  • Frontier Outposts and Beast-Breeder Guildhalls: Situated on the frontier fringes of the island continents or within sprawling livestock compounds near municipal gates, these supply depots serve beast masters, ranger scouts, and exotic mount breeders. The atmosphere is loud and rustic, smelling of straw, animal dung, and feed mash. The belt is cataloged as a critical survival utility for field expeditions—specifically for transporting fragile eggs through rough territory and establishing sterile quarantine circles around sick draft beasts. The outfitter sells the piece for a standard rate of 14 to 18 gold pieces, granting the 10% Tier 1 discount to recognized beast-handlers in good standing. When selling the item here, the yardmaster offers 8 to 10 gold pieces, deducting slightly if the bio-resin has taken scratches from trail use, and records the sale in the garrison registry for quarterly tax audits.
  • Remote Coastal Waystations and Wetland Forager Huts: Found along the margins of great saltwater marshes, tidal deltas, and isolated fishing hamlets, these rudimentary trading posts are kept by solitary marsh foragers, swamp herbalists, or coastal shrine keepers. Because refined materials like cut crystal cells and cured vellum are hard to obtain so far from port metropolises, the vendor places a premium on the item’s practical field utility, pricing it between 22 and 26 gold pieces. In these remote areas, the keeper may prefer barter, accepting payment in dried marsh-strider albumen, cured pelts, or raw botanical resins over imperial gold coin. If an adventurer tries to sell the belt in such a hamlet, the shopkeeper rarely has substantial coin reserves and may offer only 4 to 6 gold pieces, or negotiate a trade for basic dried provisions, clean torches, and camping gear.
  • Subterranean Vivarium Smugglers and Black-Market Menageries: Operating deep within forbidden sewer vaults, abandoned aqueducts, or hidden docks beneath the coastal ports, these illicit dealers specialize in poached monster eggs, banned bio-mutagens, and untaxed alchemical specimens. They operate entirely off the grid, ignoring municipal regulations, refusing World Bank transfers, and conducting business exclusively with physical gold and silver coin. Black-market dealers sell the cord at an inflated cost of 24 to 30 gold pieces to unscrupulous collectors seeking to smuggle stolen clutches past city biosecurity wards. Conversely, selling the belt to an illicit vivarium provides complete anonymity without leaving a trail for guild inspectors. If the dealer has an active order for incubation wards from a beast poacher, they will pay 11 to 15 gold pieces in hard coin; if overstocked, they will offer no more than 5 gold pieces on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.

Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Applications of the Embryological Shimenawa

  • Salt Marshes and Feral Nesting Deltas (Defensive Utility): Wading through the brackish shallows and stagnant mangrove channels of coastal deltas exposes an avatar to predatory marsh-striders, parasitic leeches, and virulent swamp rot. The avatar ties the cured reed belt snugly around their waders, relying on the passive Amniotic Ward to repel airborne spore blights and waterborne parasites from infecting open cuts. When forced to make camp upon a soggy mud hummock during a deluge, the avatar initiates the Cordon of the Gestation Ring; a faint amber circle radiates through the mud, sterilizing the ground against creeping maggots and rot-beetles while shielding exhausted allies from the biting, wet chill.
  • Salt Marshes and Feral Nesting Deltas (Offensive Utility): In aggressive sweeps through territory guarded by territorial amphibia or mud-drakes, the avatar uses the belt’s developmental resonance to compromise the enemy’s vitality. Advancing toward a cluster of brood-beasts, the avatar activates the Cordon of the Gestation Ring directly over the creatures’ nesting mound. The rapid influx of forced cellular stabilization shocks the volatile, wild-magic mutations of the feral drakes, causing the beasts to recoil from the boundary line and hesitate in confusion. With the beasts disoriented by the artificial threshold, the avatar steps forward to pin them in their burrows with spear thrusts or targeted spells before the creatures can mount a coordinated charge.
  • Scorched Basalt Crags and Magma Wastes (Defensive Utility): Traversing jagged volcanic ranges and active rift fissures presents lethal thermal hazards, sulfur fumes, and acidic ash clouds that can boil living cells. The avatar relies on the Incubator’s Resilient Cradle to protect carried samples, rare alchemical cuttings, and fragile courier eggs stored in their side packs, ensuring the specimens remain at stable body temperature despite searing updrafts. When an adjacent party member is splashed by a jet of burning volcanic acid or targeted by a necrotic cinder flare, the avatar snaps their fingers to invoke the Blastocyst Shield as a prepared reaction; one of the vellum tags flashes with golden light, conjuring a momentary membrane of calcified albumen that turns aside the corrosive spray.
  • Scorched Basalt Crags and Magma Wastes (Offensive Utility): When hunting burrowing fire-worms or volcanic ash-scorpions in narrow canyons, the avatar turns the cord’s cellular anchoring magic into a tactical lockdown. Positioning themselves at the mouth of an escape cleft, the avatar lays the belt along the rocky threshold and triggers the Cleavage Trace. As a retreating behemoth attempts to slide over the cordon, the boundary forces the creature’s rapidly dividing regenerative carapace to seize up, preventing the beast from sloughing off damage or healing its cracked plating while trapped across the line, leaving it open to decisive blows from the party.
  • Fungal Subterranean Caverns and Spore Warrens (Defensive Utility): Navigating pitch-black undercroft tunnels choked with toxic puffballs and predatory myconids requires constant defense against inhaled spores and rotting ichor. The avatar wears the cord openly, letting its rhythmic cellular pulse soothe involuntary coughing fits through Mitotic Equilibrium. Should a companion collapse into unconsciousness from fungal venom, the avatar hastily unties the cincture and circles the fallen ally with the Cleavage Trace; the glowing loop halts the spread of systemic rot, keeping the companion’s vital organs ticking in suspended balance while the party holds off waves of crawling troglodytes.
  • Fungal Subterranean Caverns and Spore Warrens (Offensive Utility): Against fungal abominations that rely on rapid spore germination to spawn waves of larval thralls, the avatar pushes into the heart of the fungal node and activates the Cordon of the Gestation Ring. The field projects an immaculate, sterile perimeter that forcibly arrests the germination of fungal spores and prevents parasitic larvae from hatching within the 5-foot zone. Stripped of their rapid-spawning advantage, the shambling hive entities are forced to fight with mundane claws against the avatar, who can systematically destroy the dormant mycelial cores at point-blank range.
  • High-Altitude Aeries and Glacial Mountain Passes (Defensive Utility): Climbing wind-scoured mountain peaks where sub-zero blizzards induce frostbite within minutes makes survival a constant struggle against freezing necrosis. The belt’s internal bio-resin sustains the avatar’s abdominal core warmth, insulating fragile marrow against sub-zero lethargy. When ascending a sheer ice cliff, if an ally above suffers frost-shivers or slips from the rope, the avatar utilizes the Blastocyst Shield to deploy an elastic film of amber bio-force around them, absorbing the concussive shock of falling ice or falling gear and preventing catastrophic tissue damage.
  • High-Altitude Aeries and Glacial Mountain Passes (Offensive Utility): When clearing high mountain eyries infested with predatory raptors or ice-wyrms, the avatar uses the cordon to cut off nesting aeries. Entering the roosting cave, the avatar uncoils the Shimenawa and secures it across the only flight ledge with the Cordon of the Gestation Ring. Feral whelps and mature beasts are repelled by the alien threshold, which jars against their primal instincts. Trapped between the cliff drop and the barrier, the beasts cannot execute diving charges or flanking maneuvers, allowing the party to methodically suppress the nest without being outflanked in the freezing winds.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective (Five Senses):
    • Sight: The user sees the oval viewport in the ceramic egg ignite with a warm, pulsing amber radiance that brightens and dims in a slow, rhythmic cadence. The diagrammatic blastomere rings inked upon the dangling vellum slips glow with a translucent golden halo, while faint, orbital rings of fine light trace slowly around the user’s hips and ankles.
    • Hearing: A low, rhythmic thumping sounds within the user’s ears, resembling a muffled, steady fetal heartbeat echoing through warm water, layered beneath a faint, wet chime like fluid droplets striking a resonant glass vial.
    • Smell: The user smells the clean, sterile tang of mild saline wash, sweet botanical nursery mulch, and warmed beeswax resin.
    • Touch: A soothing, cradle-like warmth spreads across the user’s abdomen and lower back, easing muscle tension. The skin beneath the belt experiences a faint, elastic pressure, as though submerged in a buoyant, gentle bath of warm mineral oil.
    • Taste: A mild, faintly metallic taste coats the back of the palate, carrying the subtle flavor of mineral-rich saline and sweet honeyed egg albumen.
  • User’s Perspective (Extra-Sensory Perceptions):
    • Mind’s Eye Bio-Clarity: The user’s Mind’s Eye perceives the immediate surroundings in shades of biological vitality, highlighting living cells, fragile specimens, and the micro-rhythms of nearby creatures as warm, pulsing cores of light.
    • Germline Resonance: The user feels an intuitive, somatic awareness of biological division, effortlessly discerning whether adjacent organic tissues or specimens are thriving, dormant, or undergoing cellular decay.
    • Visceral Grounding: A profound sense of metabolic tranquility settles over the avatar, grounding their physical form against chaotic wild magic surges and stabilizing their physiological baseline.
  • Observer’s Perspective (Five Senses):
    • Sight: Observers witness the smooth ceramic egg clasp illuminate from within, casting an amber, heartbeat-like pulse across the user’s attire. The hanging vellum tags shine with a golden translucency that reveals their cellular cleavage diagrams, while thin, looping ribbons of golden particulate light drift outward in a concentric 5-foot circle.
    • Hearing: Observers hear a soft, steady pulse—like blood moving through an artery or a distant drum draped in heavy wool—accompanied by the gentle sound of slow, rhythmic exhalations.
    • Smell: A distinct aroma of fresh rainwater, clean river reeds, and a sterile apothecary balm wafts through the air.
    • Touch: Observers stepping within the boundary feel an immediate sensation of calm, heavy air, as if entering a humid, climate-controlled nursery greenhouse where wind and sudden chills are entirely silenced.
    • Taste: Those standing close catch the faint, neutral taste of humid vapor and clean spring water upon the tongue.
  • Observer’s Perspective (Extra-Sensory Perceptions):
    • Mind’s Eye Vitality Halo: Observers focusing with their Mind’s Eye register the user as an anchored, stabilizing focal point of primal life energy, seeing a protective golden shell resting over their aura.
    • Inherent Tranquility: Sensitive beings perceive a sudden dampening of feral tension and cellular distress, feeling the ambient environment turn orderly and nurturing.
  • Positives:
    • Produces an unmistakable, calming boundary that visibly assures allies of a secure, sterile resting ground without obstructing movement.
    • Repels micro-parasites, botflies, flesh-maggots, and rot-spores from entering the protective perimeter.
    • Softens sudden temperature drops and sharp environmental winds, creating ideal conditions for fragile biological cultures or wounded companions.
    • The rhythmic pulsing cadence naturally lowers heart rates and panic reactions among stressed party members.
  • Negatives:
    • The rhythmic amber pulse and luminescent vellum slips act as an active beacon in subterranean darkness or dense fog, making stealth operations virtually impossible.
    • The audible fetal drumming noise can carry across enclosed stone corridors or quiet cavern chambers, giving away the user’s location to predatory beasts.
    • The humid, warm micro-climate generated inside the circle can cause mild sluggishness or drowsiness during intense physical exertion.
    • Wild beasts driven by predatory maternal instincts or primal feeding urges may be attracted toward the scent of sterile incubation and fresh albumen.

Recipe: Braiding the Embryological Shimenawa of the Primordial Germline

Materials Needed:

  • Four yards of unbleached flaxen bast cordage, washed in mild lye and dried.
  • Two yards of split marsh rushes harvested from clean, spring-fed wetlands.
  • Three ounces of raw albumen and yolk-extract drawn from fresh marsh-strider or giant waterfowl eggs.
  • Two ounces of distilled pine resin or amber tree gum.
  • Two ounces of fine bone clay mixed with powdered river oyster shell.
  • One Tier 1 magic crystal cell (oval or coin-cut, displaying steady internal lucidity).
  • Four rectangular strips of heavy calfskin vellum, trimmed to two inches by seven inches.
  • One vial of mineral gall-ink (charcoal and copperas suspension) for drafting cellular diagrams.
  • One ounce of raw spun silk thread, conditioned with melted beeswax.
  • One pint of saline wash (distilled water and pure sea salt).

Tools Required:

  • One handheld fluid collector (fitted with a sterile needle nozzle for fluid extraction and measuring).
  • One drop-spindle or weighted braiding frame.
  • One bone creasing folder (for pressing clean accordion folds into vellum).
  • One fine badger-hair drafting quill or fine stylus.
  • One portable brazier or small charcoal kiln with a heat-regulating lid.
  • One set of steel utility shears.
  • Two ceramic mixing bowls and a glass stirring rod.

Skill Requirements:

  • Biology or Embryology Crafting: Level 2 or higher (required to properly measure amniotic fractions, draft accurate cleavage diagrams, and balance the bio-resin without spoiling organic components).
  • Cordwaining or Weaving: Level 1 or higher (needed to blend bast fibers and marsh rushes into an even, balanced two-ply braid).
  • Ceramics or Alchemical Enameling: Level 1 or higher (necessary to throw, shape, and fire the hollow egg-shaped ceramic buckle with an integrated crystal viewport).

Crafting Steps:

  1. Use the fluid collector to draw three ounces of clear albumen from the marsh-strider egg clutch, expelling it into a clean ceramic mixing bowl while discarding all fibrous egg-cords or shell grit.
  2. Warm the distilled pine resin over the brazier, then gradually fold in the albumen using the glass rod to create a flexible, pale-amber bio-resin that cures without becoming brittle.
  3. Submerge the split marsh rushes in the bio-resin mixture for twenty minutes, ensuring the plant fibers are thoroughly saturated to prevent future rot and biological decay.
  4. Combine the unbleached flaxen bast cordage with the treated marsh rushes into two even bundles, anchoring them to the drop-spindle.
  5. Spin the bundles into a firm, balanced two-ply cord measuring just under six feet in length, binding each loose end with waxed silk thread to form clean terminal tassels.
  6. Hand-shape the bone clay and crushed oyster shell into a hollow, egg-shaped nodule measuring two and a half inches in height, cutting an oval viewport through the front face and two horizontal belt channels along the back.
  7. Bake the ceramic egg inside the portable kiln until the shell vitrifies into a smooth, porcelain-like finish with a soft green-and-white mottled glaze.
  8. Seat the Tier 1 magic crystal cell inside the hollow core of the ceramic egg, positioning the clearest facet flush against the front viewport, and anchor it firmly in place with a drop of warm bio-resin.
  9. Take the four vellum strips and rinse them in the saline wash, allowing them to dry flat under tension to stabilize the skin against moisture fluctuations.
  10. Using the fine drafting quill and mineral gall-ink, draw the four stages of embryonic cleavage upon the vellum strips: the single-cell zygote, the two-cell divide, the four-cell blastomere, and the concentric morula cluster.
  11. Fold each vellum strip into four crisp accordion pleats using the bone creasing folder, taking care not to crack the dried ink lines across the folds.
  12. Brush a micro-thin glaze of the bio-resin across both sides of each vellum tag to waterproof the diagrams against humidity, sweat, and rain.
  13. Mount the ceramic egg clasp onto the midpoint of the braided waist cord, securing it through the back channels with tightly knotted bast fiber.
  14. Suspend two accordion-folded vellum slips on the left side of the egg buckle and two on the right, tying their top perforations through the rope’s plies with lengths of waxed silk thread.
  15. Trim the terminal tassel fringes evenly with the utility shears and wipe the entire finished cord with a light coat of saline-soaked cloth to set the talisman’s ambient resonance.

First Warm Shell and Rot-Father of Deep Fen

In the turns of the oldest circle, when the seventy-and-three sea-rocks were yet dripping with the milk-grease of the birth-mother Gaialilith, the breath of the world was very hot and full of small poisons. In those hours, the sun-orb Helios cast down green needles instead of yellow warmth, and whatever fell into the mud did not grow bones, but became soft like boiled suet. The creatures that came out of the damp belly-holes had five eyes where ears should be, and the mothers of the two-legs wept upon the reeds because their broods died before they could suck the salt from their fingers.

There dwelt in the low silt-shores of the country called by the old chisels Great Vena a female-vessel of two souls whose flesh-wrapper was named Mael-of-the-Ootheca. In her skull-case were the broken pots of a city that had burned under another star, where wise men had kept little glass eggs that sang with blue lightning. She had no iron kettle to boil grass, nor had she five sons to carry wood, but she carried a skin bag filled with the white fluid of the swamp-strider bird and three pieces of chalk scraped from the bellies of dead river-crabs.

In that rotation, the great enemy of all small things was the Father-of-Mastication, whose body was a hill of spoiled meal that moved upon forty jointed feet. Where the rot-father dragged his belly across the fen, the seeds of the trees turned black like charcoal, and the water in the reeds smelled like the inside of a dead dog’s throat. His children were ten myriad little worms of white fat that had teeth made of wet hair; they flew through the warm air like steam and went inside the shells of the duck-beasts and the bellies of the mountain-women, eating the small hearts before they could begin to beat.

The people of the low fens took their flint axes and beat the mud until their hands were cracked like dry earth, but one cannot smash a thousand drops of rot with a rock. The women carried their newborn things into deep caves where there was no light, but the rot-worms crawled through the cracks of the stone and turned the flesh into grey moss before the third dawn.

Mael sat upon a dry hummock where the marsh-reed grew in the shape of two intertwining snakes. Her memories of the glass sky made her angry, for she remembered an era when life was kept inside clean crystal rooms where no fly could crawl. She took her flint scraper and cut the tough skin of the marsh-rushes until her palms were dyed red with the astringent juice. She did not cut them to make baskets for dried fish, nor to make thatch for a leaky roof; she split them into threads no thicker than the gut of a mouse.

Then she took the yolk-fat of the giant marsh-fowl—thick, yellow, and sticky like honey—and mixed it with the gum of the bleeding pine tree until the brew was neither resin nor meat, but a clear skin that smelled of honeyed salt. She bathed the split reeds in this liquor for seven sunsets, while the green moon VaporSphere shed its heavy sweat upon the world.

While she twisted the reeds to the left side with a bone whorl, the Rot-Father came pushing through the black sumac trees. His front face was like a rotted turnip with two weeping holes for seeing, and his great throat rattled with the sound of ten thousand dry beans shaken in an empty gourd.

The rot-beast spoke with a wet bubbling: “Why do you twist the wet grass, little meat-sack? Tomorrow your liver will be a home for my third brood, and your marrow shall feed the blind things that crawl without knees.”

Mael did not throw a spear, nor did she call upon the sky-gods who were then sleeping behind the thunder-clouds. She took her clay egg—which she had turned from white oyster flour and baked in the center of her dung-brazier until it was like sea-porcelain—and she pressed into its eye-hole a small pebble of amber fire that she had pulled from the throat of a dead beetle. She drove the knot of the twisted cord through the belly of the clay egg and fastened it around her waist like a woman tying a wet linen apron before butchering a swine.

Then she took four squares of dry vellum, scraped until they were thin as a water-spider’s wing, and upon each she drew with charcoal-ink the pictures of the division: first the round drop, then the line that cuts the world in twain, then the four brothers that cling together like four seeds in an apple, and last the round house of eighty cells that looks like a blackberry before it turns purple.

The Rot-Father opened his yellow maw and breathed a gray cloud of flies and maggot-spores across her breast. The cloud was so thick that the reeds behind her turned to black grease in the space of a single breath.

Then the grammar of the earth was turned inside-out.

Where the breath touched the apron of Mael, the little clay egg gave forth a sound like the heart of a running deer. A ring of gold light, sticky and clear like raw white-of-egg, blossomed out from the four vellum slips. The circle ran five cubits along the black muck, and where it passed, the boiling mud became cool and pale like clean river sand.

The flying worms struck the circle and did not pass through. They struck the gold light and turned into dry flakes of lime, falling into the sand like parched salt. The cloud of rot-flies broke their wings upon the edge of the egg-light, for they could not breathe where life was held in an unbroken skin.

The great rot-beast screamed with a sound like tearing hides and threw his heavy fat upon the border to squash Mael into broth. But his belly could not pass the threshold. The gold ring pushed back against his diseased flesh; the division-marks upon the vellum slips shone like burning fat, and the cells of the monster’s own hide began to quarrel with one another. His skin tore away from his fat, his fat tore away from his bone, and the rot-father wept yellow water from his forty joints because his body was forgetting how to stay together.

He crawled backward into the deep black pools of the outer fen, dragging his ruined bulk away until the mud swallowed him, and his brood followed him into the dark like retreating ants.

The people of the salt-banks came out of their dark caves, carrying their dying broods whose skin was already turning green with the swamp-spoil. Mael did not give them roots to eat, nor did she chant words to the thunder. She took the cord from her hips and laid it upon the grass in a circle, and she put the dying children and the cracked bird-eggs inside the golden loop.

For three days and three nights the circle pulsed with the slow heartbeat of the ceramic egg. The skin of the little ones lost its black mold; the green spots upon their bellies faded into the color of fresh curd, and inside the blue eggs of the river-fowl the dormant chicks began to peck against their shells with hard beaks. When the fourth sunrise broke over the mountain, twelve healthy children laughed inside the cord, and seven young striders ran out of their shells with dry feathers.

Mael lived until the marsh became dry gravel and the seven skies were forgotten by all save the stones. When her soul went back to the mother Gaialilith to be spun into another thread, the cord was kept by the chirurgeons and the egg-tenders in the stone towns. But because the people of the high centuries had learned the speech of silver coins and iron weighing-scales, they no longer knew how to speak the names of the dividing cells, and their belts grew stiff and brittle, preserving only the shape of the knot while the golden heartbeat inside the clay shell went silent.

This history was preserved upon a slate found in the ditch of an ancient vivarium, and beneath the carving of the split seed was this reckoning:

Moral of the Story: He who wishes to defend the tree from the storm must first build a fence around the tiny seed, for when the wild breath of the world seeks to rot all things into common broth, life is preserved not by the strength of the fist, but by the sacred integrity of the wall that shields the unbroken egg.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

Artifact Name: Ward of the Vitelline Shell (Amniotic Cord Talisman)

Description: A pale, resin-impregnated cord braided from marsh rushes and flaxen bast, secured at the front with a glazed ceramic egg buckle. An oval viewport reveals an amber crystal that pulses with a slow, heartbeat-like cadence. Four folded vellum slips dangle from the cord, inscribed in ink with early embryological blastomere divisions. When held and focused by an investigator, it establishes an antiseptic, stabilizing perimeter that arrests cellular necrosis, purges micro-parasites, and cushions organic tissue against unnatural corruption.

Game Mechanics:

  • Sanity Cost: 1d3 Sanity points upon activating the barrier.
  • Magic Point Cost: 3 Magic Points.
  • Activation Time: 1 combat round.
  • Gestation Ring: When activated, an invisible, sterile boundary extends in a 2-yard radius for 10 minutes. Within this circle, natural rot, noxious miasmas, and infestations of mundane or supernatural micro-parasites (such as corpse flies, larvae, or flesh-eating spores) are excluded. Characters inside ignore penalties caused by non-extreme environmental exposure, and open wounds cease bleeding.
  • Cellular Preservation: While the belt is worn, delicate organic materials, medical specimens, or fertilized clutches kept in pouches on the belt are immune to spoilage, temperature extremes, and ambient decay. The wearer gains a bonus die on CON rolls made to resist biological toxins, venoms, or flesh-eating diseases.
  • Vitelline Shield (Reaction): When an adjacent ally within 2 yards is struck by an attack dealing chemical or corrosive damage, the wearer may spend 2 additional Magic Points as a reaction to intercept the strike; an elastic film of amber albumen forms, reducing incoming damage by 1d4 points.
  • Failure Complication: On a fumble during activation or an associated Medicine/Occult roll, the ceramic egg’s viewport cracks; the rhythmic pulse stops, dealing 1 point of physical damage to the wearer and inflicting a violent nauseous shudder that causes a penalty die on all physical skill rolls for 10 minutes.

Blades in the Dark

Item Name: Amber-Embryo Threshold Cincture

Load: 1 Load (Arcane / Alchemical Gear)

Description: A supple braided belt cured with thick botanical bio-resin, featuring an enameled ceramic egg buckle housing a low-humming electroplasmic crystal core. Four accordion-folded vellum tags display intricate hand-drawn blastomere diagrams. Used by illicit leeches and whisper-surgeons to maintain sterile micro-climates in squalid canal quarters and stabilize trauma patients during violent scores.

Game Mechanics:

  • Quality: Tier I fine item.
  • Activation Cost: Spend 1 Stress to activate the gestation field during a score.
  • Gestation Perimeter: When activated, a 3-meter boundary centered on the scoundrel purges airborne spores, sewer miasmas, and creeping vermin for the duration of the obstacle. This grants improved Position or +1 Effect on Leech rolls made to stabilize critical trauma, treat poisoning, or perform emergency field surgery.
  • Cellular Cushion: When an adjacent crew member takes harm from acidic fluids, necrotic contact, or biological rot, the scoundrel may mark 1 Stress to treat the belt as physical armor for the ally, reducing the severity of the incoming Harm by one level as a translucent membrane of hardened albumen absorbs the trauma.
  • Specimen Preservation: Small biological cultures, fragile chemical reagents, or stolen tissue samples stored in belt pouches are completely immune to environmental corruption, temperature shocks, or spoilage during scores and downtime.
  • Devil’s Bargain / Complication: On an action roll result of 1–3, the rhythmic thumping of the egg-heart synchronizes with ambient ghost-field frequencies, causing an immediate Devil’s Bargain complication (such as drawing wandering specters or causing the wearer’s pulse to skyrocket, inflicting temporary fatigue).

Description: This two-ply belt is spun from wetland rushes and bast fibers, cured in translucent amber bio-resin. It is fastened by a glazed ceramic egg buckle with an oval aperture showcasing a rhythmically pulsing magic crystal, flanked by four accordion-folded vellum tags inscribed with blastomere cleavage diagrams. While worn, the belt insulates organic life, fosters healing, and projects a protective cellular sanctuary.

Game Mechanics:

  • Incubator’s Cradle: While wearing and attuned to the belt, fragile biological samples, seeds, fertilized eggs, or medicinal salves stored in pouches at your waist are entirely protected from environmental temperature extremes and decay. You also have advantage on saving throws against poison, disease, and parasitic infestations.
  • Gestation Ring (3 Charges): You can use an action to expend 1 charge to activate the ceramic clasp, establishing a 5-foot-radius emanation of warm, sterile energy centered on you for 10 minutes. Within this area, hostile insects, parasitic swarms, and rot-vermin of Tiny size cannot enter or manifest. Non-hostile creatures inside the ring are protected against extreme weather effects and stabilize automatically if dying at the start of their turns. The belt regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20; on a 1, the ceramic egg fractures, suppressing all active features until repaired.
  • Blastocyst Shield (Reaction): When a creature you can see within 5 feet of you takes acid or necrotic damage, you can use your reaction to interpose a shimmering membrane of amber energy, reducing the incoming damage by 1d4.
  • Cleavage Trace: You can use an action to untie the cord and arrange it in a closed loop around an unconscious creature. While inside the loop, the target does not need to make death saving throws due to ongoing bleed or environmental exposure, remaining stable for up to 1 hour or until removed from the circle.
