Lore
- In the soot-stained boiler-vaults and munitions depots of Saṃsāra’s canal districts, catastrophic structural failure is an ever-present hazard of daily labor.
- When a high-pressure brass accumulator burst in the Iron Wharf, an apprentice fire-warden used an unbroken ash-pheasant egg to quickly siphon superheated steam from a ruptured valve line.
- Taking the thick, heat-hardened shell to a temple tallow-carver, the apprentice had it inscribed with traditional wax-resist geometric nets, water-gate motifs, and containment rings using mineral slurries of slate gray, wet river clay, and pumice white.
- The hollow egg was filled with alchemically chilled heavy brine mixed with pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal dust, then sealed with leaded gaskets and a spring-loaded vent valve.
- Today, blast-mitigators, fire-marshals, and disaster-response crews carry these eggs on their duty belts to rapidly suppress combustion, stabilize fracturing structures, and contain toxic boiler-leaks before total collapse occurs.
Description
- A broad, heavy avian egg coated in a chalky, flame-retardant ceramic glaze that feels cold to the touch regardless of surrounding heat.
- The shell is partitioned into three interlocking zones of dull slate gray, river-silt ochre, and soot black, traced with sharp white wax-resist lines depicting interlocking keystone arches, water-breaks, and pressurized safety valves.
- The upper crown is bound by a reinforced lead-iron collar housing a micro-perforated pressure-relief nozzle, while the base features an anchored, spring-actuated steel ground-spike.
- The egg radiates a steady, quiet hiss reminiscent of hot coals being splashed with cold river water, accompanied by a clean scent of crushed limestone, wet charcoal, and chilled mountain runoff.
- Viewed via the Mind’s Eye, the wax-drawn arches emit a dense, pale azure barrier that highlights stress fractures, structural weak points, and thermal venting paths in nearby architecture and pressure vessels.

- Item Hit Points: Avatar’s maximum Hit Points plus 10 (Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
- Armor Check: 0
- Weight: 1.0 pound
- Attunement: Simple attunement (requires 1 minute of focusing mana while holding the egg’s lead collar against an active hearth or heat source)
Passive Magic
- Thermal Dissipation: While worn on the belt, the talisman absorbs excess radiant heat, granting advantage or a +1 passive bonus on saving throws and checks against extreme environmental heat, scalding steam, and smoke inhalation.
- Stress-Fracture Vision: Inspecting physical barriers, masonry, or pressurized machinery through the talisman’s field reveals structural fatigue, cracks, and load-bearing stress points, granting an intuitive grasp of how close an object is to collapsing.
- Catastrophe Alarm: The egg chills to an icy frost against the wearer’s hip whenever an imminent explosive detonation, structural collapse, or high-pressure rupture is within 15 feet.
Activable Magic
- Suppressive Mist: As an action, the user depresses the lead crown valve to release a sudden 10-foot cone of pressurized, crystal-chilled mist. This instantly extinguishes all non-magical fires, disperses thick smoke or flammable gas pockets, and cools superheated metal surfaces. This ability can be used twice per day.
- Structural Keystone: As an action, the user drives the steel ground-spike into a cracked wall, buckling doorway, or fracturing engine chassis. The talisman channels a localized kinetic brace into the material, preventing the structure from collapsing or bursting for up to 10 minutes (holding up to 1,000 pounds of falling debris or containment pressure). Once used, this ability cannot be activated again until the next dawn.
- Blast-Buffer Shunt: As a reaction when the wearer or an adjacent ally within 5 feet is hit by an explosive blast, falling debris, or a bludgeoning impact, the user triggers the venting valve to deploy a kinetic pressure cushion. This absorbs up to 6 points of incoming bludgeoning, fire, or thunder damage. Once used, this ability cannot be activated again until the next dawn.

Commerce and Acquisition of Pysanky 519 of the Quenched Hearth
- Municipal Fire-Watch Outposts and Sapper Depots
- Stationed near river canal locks, timber-wharf docks, and high-density warehouse gates, these officially provisioned supply barracks serve city fire-marshals, canal watchmen, and municipal demolition crews.
- The talisman rests in sand-filled wooden lockers or insulated canvas pouches beside water pumps, crowbars, and asbestos salvage blankets; wardens issue them to rapid-response teams dispatched to boiler flare-ups and timber conflagrations.
- The standard requisition cost ranges between 16 and 22 silver coins, with certified firefighters, sappers, and municipal engineers receiving the standard 10% tier discount to lower the cost to 14 to 18 silver coins.
- When selling an intact specimen back to a sapper depot, the quartermaster presses the relief nozzle over a hot brazier to confirm the brine core still vents cold mist, transferring 8 to 11 silver coins directly to the seller’s World Bank ledger.
- Heavy Boiler-Maker Exchanges and Steam-Fitter Foundries
- Located within pressurized steam-plant basements, foundry smelting halls, and locomotive maintenance roundhouses, these authorized industrial exchanges cater to licensed boilermakers and pipe-fitters.
- Displayed behind thick wire-mesh counters alongside pressure gauges, lead packings, and steel spanners, the item is purchased by master mechanics to shore up failing manifold joints and protect apprentices during dangerous steam-blow operations.
- The retail price in a foundry exchange is between 15 and 19 silver coins, with guild-stamped journeymen eligible for their 10% tier-based trade reduction down to 13 to 15 silver coins.
- Liquidating an ovoid to a boiler-guild appraiser requires an inspection of the lead collar seals; the exchange credits 9 to 12 silver coins through the municipal World Bank terminal, filing the transaction as industrial maintenance equipment.
- Frontier Quarry Caravans and Mine-Head Bazaars
- Operating out of reinforced timber-and-iron wagons stationed near open-pit quarries, deep coal seams, and unstable tunnel heads, these rugged supply caravans trade directly with excavation teams.
- Wagon-bosses keep these eggs in padded tool-chests layered with stone dust, selling them to miners, quarry blasters, and timber-shorers who require immediate kinetic bracing against unexpected cave-ins and runaway powder blasts.
- Because reliable shoring and blast-dampening gear is scarce along outer excavation lines, caravan traders charge a marked-up rate of 24 to 32 silver coins (or 2 to 3 gold coins).
- Selling the egg to a mine-head trader yields a deflated return of 6 to 8 silver coins via portable trade scrip or slate ledger, as merchants factor in the wear and tear of hauling delicate pressure-vessels through rocky dust country.
- Demolition Fences and Clandestine Powder-Broker Dens
- Concealed in damp canal basements, illicit saltpeter vaults, or abandoned lime kilns, these black-market outfits deal with illegal tunnelers, vault-breakers, and unauthorized munitions smugglers.
- Fences procure these talismans to safely contain accidental powder burns during bomb-making, or to quietly suppress the explosive report and collateral shockwaves of breaching charges during illicit vault raids.
- Transactions strictly bypass city registries to avoid tax scrutiny and municipal munitions tracking; purchase prices command 32 to 45 silver coins (3 to 4 gold coins) with no institutional discounts acknowledged.
- When selling to a powder-fence, an adventurer receives an immediate physical payout of 12 to 16 silver coins, with extra premiums offered if the ground-spike is pristine and ready for an imminent heist.
Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Offensive and Defensive Deployments of Pysanky 519
- Canal Lock-Gates and High-Pressure Steam Vaults
- Defensive Utilization: Amidst screaming brass pipes and scalding vapors in a subterranean pump manifold, the damage controller relies on Thermal Dissipation to wade through superheated steam leaks without blistering flesh. When an over-torqued boiler valve begins to warp, the avatar activates Stress-Fracture Vision to trace the hairline fissures snaking across the iron drum, immediately identifying the exact junction on the verge of total failure. If a rupture occurs, the user triggers Blast-Buffer Shunt to catch an adjacent boiler-tender in a kinetic air cushion, neutralizing the lethal concussive wave and scalding steam blast.
- Offensive Utilization: Confronting an entrenched rival gang barricaded behind steam-release lines, the avatar charges through the venting vapors unharmed and uses Suppressive Mist into the ventilation intake. The sudden blizzard of alchemically chilled mist instantly quenches the heat sources powering the enemy’s steam-cannons, condenses their concealing steam screen into cold puddle water, and blinds the gunners with a sudden, suffocating frost fog.
- Underground Coal Mines and Deep Stone Quarries
- Defensive Utilization: Tunneling through unstable, fractured bedrock, the avatar feels the egg suddenly frost over via Catastrophe Alarm, signaling that the ceiling above is under shifting mechanical stress seconds before a collapse. While other miners scramble, the avatar drives the egg’s steel ground-spike directly into the buckling center-post and invokes Structural Keystone. The talisman anchors a rigid kinetic field through the timber, locking 1,000 pounds of descending shale and loose boulders in place for ten minutes, allowing the entire excavation crew to evacuate through the adit safely.
- Offensive Utilization: When pursued into a narrow quarry drift by cavern predators or armed strike-breakers, the avatar uses a pickaxe to weaken a supporting pillar, then runs past the choke point. As the pursuers surge beneath the weakened span, the avatar triggers a planned detonation or dislodges the pillar; when the pursuers attempt to leap clear, the avatar uses Blast-Buffer Shunt to deflect the flying rocks away from themselves while the pursuers are buried beneath the uncontrolled kinetic cascade.
- Timber-Wharf Docks and Combustible Munitions Warehouses
- Defensive Utilization: Navigating a blazing timber warehouse packed with volatile pitch barrels, the fire-warden moves unimpeded by toxic charcoal smoke or searing drafts. As an exploding cask of spirits rains fire across the floorboards, the warden deploys Suppressive Mist in a 10-foot wide sweep, extinguishing the chemical flames in an instant and cooling the surrounding powder barrels before an uncontrollable chain detonation can level the city block.
- Offensive Utilization: Cornering arsonists or pyromancer-saboteurs within a burning depot, the damage-mitigator uses the talisman to turn the environment against them. The user points the lead crown nozzle at the arsonist’s primary fire bomb or alchemical torch and releases Suppressive Mist, snuffing out their ignition sources mid-strike. Deprived of flame, the saboteurs find their offensive magic smothered in dense, freezing vapor while the avatar closes the distance to pin them against the wet timbers.
- Besieged Urban Fortifications and Masonry Gatehouses
- Defensive Utilization: Stationed upon an ancient stone parapet subjected to heavy catapult stones or explosive sapper charges, the warden watches the masonry crack under bombardment. As a wall section begins to shear away, the warden drops down, hammers the steel spike into the masonry seam, and activates Structural Keystone. The fractured stone freezes into a rigid, monolithic barrier, preventing the gatehouse arch from falling into the thoroughfare and holding the defensive line steady until reinforcements secure the breach.
- Offensive Utilization: During an assault against a fortified enemy garrison, the avatar leads a breaching element to a barred, reinforced iron door. Using Stress-Fracture Vision, the avatar marks the weakest hinge pin for the demolitionist’s sledgehammer. The moment the charge blows the door inward, the avatar triggers Blast-Buffer Shunt to absorb the kickback shockwave for the front rank, instantly following up with Suppressive Mist through the breached doorway to blind the defenders’ archers with dense, quenching fog.

Perception of Activation:
- The Five Senses: User’s Perspective
- Sight: The matte slate, river-ochre, and soot-black panels on the shell darken under a layer of instant frost, while the white wax lines depicting keystone arches and water-breaks flare with cold, brilliant azure luminescence; concurrently, a pressurized plume of pale blue, diamond-bright vapor erupts upward through the micro-perforated lead collar.
- Sound: A sharp, high-pressure mechanical venting hiss—like a locomotive safety valve discharging over wet ballast—crackles against the hip, followed by a heavy, resonant thud as if an iron portcullis had slammed into bedrock.
- Smell: A sudden shock of freezing mountain air cuts through the ambient air, carrying the crisp scent of wet limestone gravel, river silt, cold charcoal ash, and salt brine.
- Taste: A dry, mineral chill settles across the tongue, tasting distinctly of powdered chalk, wet slate, and the alkaline bitterness of quenching lime.
- Touch: An intense, bone-deep cold radiates from the belt harness into the user’s hip, accompanied by a heavy, stabilizing downward gravity that makes the bearer feel solidly anchored to the floorboards or stone beneath them.
- The Five Senses: Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Observers see the bulky ovoid suddenly ignite with an icy, neon-cyan lattice of glowing arches, instantly followed by a blinding fan of churning, crystal-chilled mist venting in a wide arc across the immediate area.
- Sound: Bystanders hear a deafening, compressed rush of escaping steam mixed with the distinctive thump-crack of a heavy pneumatic damper catching a collapsing weight.
- Smell: Nearby individuals are hit with a wave of damp, refrigerated cavern air that instantly smothers the stench of smoke, scorched paint, or burning oil.
- Taste: The surrounding air tastes cold and flat on inhalation, stripped clean of soot particles and burning sulfur.
- Touch: Those within five feet feel a sudden drop in ambient room temperature, accompanied by a concussive shockwave of cold air that rattles loose buttons and pushes back loose clothing.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Mind’s Eye: The bearer’s mind perceives a rigid, geometric architectural wireframe mapping out the immediate environment; load-bearing walls, structural trusses, ceiling joists, and boiler shells illuminate in glowing blue vector lines, clearly highlighting micro-fissures, sheared bolts, and bending stresses.
- Aura Sight: Sensitives watching the local arcane field observe roaring, volatile tongues of flame-mana and concussive blast-force instantly snagged, compressed, and sucked down into a spiraling, heavy vortex centered directly upon the egg’s leaded collar.
- Structural Proprioception: The user feels an intuitive bodily connection to adjacent walls, timber posts, and masonry spans, physically experiencing the weight, strain, and balance of surrounding architecture as though it were their own skeleton.
- Imminent Rupture Intuition: A sharp, freezing pang strikes the user’s mind moments before physical collapse occurs, pinpointing the precise second and location where a steam pipe will burst or a support timber will snap.
- Positives
- Instantly smothers open flames, cools superheated metal surfaces, and suppresses volatile fuel vapors across a 10-foot radius.
- Locks collapsing masonry, failing arches, and buckling beams in place for up to ten minutes, creating a vital escape corridor.
- Absorbs concussive kinetic shockwaves, explosive shrapnel, and falling debris impacts without harming the bearer or nearby squadmates.
- Reveals hidden structural weak points, metal fatigue, and impending catastrophic bursts before they occur.
- Negatives
- The loud, screeching pneumatic hiss makes covert entry or quiet breach containment completely impossible.
- The sudden plume of dense freezing mist drastically cuts visibility down to a few feet within enclosed spaces for several moments.
- Anchoring the kinetic brace into ground or stone can temporarily pin the user’s gear or stance to the spot until the shock is fully absorbed.
- The intense cryo-brine chill transmitted through the belt harness leaves the wearer’s hip numb, stiff, and prone to muscle cramps following activation.

- 1 Annealing Tongs and Fine Pumice Polishing Cloths.
Skill Requirements
- Crafting (Wax-Resist / Stonework Engraving): Minimum Level 2 (for inscribing unbroken keystone arches, stress-distribution loops, and pressure rings).
- Engineering / Metallurgy: Minimum Level 1 (for properly tapping threads into the egg poles and seating the pressure-relief valve assembly).
- Geology / Damage Control: Minimum Level 1 (for properly calibrating the brine suspension against kinetic shock and high-temperature stress).
Crafting Steps
- Shell Evacuation and Interior Tempering
- Seat the ash-pheasant egg in a padded wooden vise; use the steel coring punch to drill an 8mm circular aperture through the crown and a 5mm aperture through the base.
- Insert the aspiration syringe to draw out the dense albumen and yolk, washing the inner cavity with hot alkaline lye water to strip all membrane fat.
- Flush the interior with cold river brine, then heat-temper the empty shell over low charcoal embers until the calcium carbonate anneals into a dense, stone-like ring when tapped.
- Allow the shell to cool slowly in dry sand for 4 hours to prevent thermal micro-cracking.
- Mineral Dye Preparation
- In the first stoneware bowl, blend the crushed slate slurry with warm spring water and a drop of vinegar to establish the foundation gray bath.
- In the second bowl, mix the washed river-clay slurry with pulverized limestone to form the ochre sediment bath.
- In the third bowl, grind the lampblack carbon paste with thin ox-gall to create the impenetrable matte-black containment bath.
- Keep all three slurries gently warmed beside the coal brazier.
- Wax-Resist Inscription of the Load-Bearing Arches
- Melt the high-temp tallow-wax compound inside the brass kistka reservoir over the spirit flame.
- Scribe the initial white reserve lines upon the raw shell, tracing primary keystone arches, vertical buttress tracks, and safety-gate circles.
- Submerge the egg into the warm slate-gray bath for 20 minutes; remove, wipe dry, and wax over the zones representing solid masonry and bedrock.
- Lower the shell into the river-clay ochre bath for 25 minutes; dry thoroughly, then wax over the water-break baffles and flood-gate motifs.
- Dip the egg into the lampblack bath for 30 minutes to lock in the exterior containment fields, leaving sharp tri-tone banding separated by clean white structural lines.
- Dewaxing and Cryo-Core Inoculation
- Hold the shell close to the brazier’s heat, rotating it steadily with the tongs so the tallow-wax runs off into a waste tray without scorching the mineral dyes.
- Buff the shell with warm flannel and pumice powder to expose the crisp architectural patterns framed by white chalk boundaries.
- Blend the pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal dust into the cold heavy alchemical brine until the mixture turns a luminescent, pale cyan and begins radiating a steady chill.
- Fit the high-pressure syringe into the base aperture and steadily inject the dense cryo-brine until the entire internal chamber is flooded, leaving zero air pockets.
- Valve Assembly, Sealing, and Kinetic Lock
- Place a lead gasket around the base aperture, align the threaded spring-actuated steel ground-spike, and tighten it into the shell base using the spanner wrench.
- Position the second lead gasket over the crown hole, seat the lead-iron collar housing the micro-perforated relief nozzle, and torque it down securely until sealed against leaks.
- Dip the completed vessel into the chalky ceramic glaze, allowing it to dry into a cold, flame-retardant matte finish.
- Complete attunement by holding the lead collar over an active flame while tapping the steel spike against solid stone; the relief valve should emit a sharp hiss of cold azure vapor, confirming the kinetic and thermal dampening fields have locked.
Great Shaking of Red Kiln-Tower and Cold Lime-Egg That Held Beam
In the forty-third turn of the Great Wheel, before the brick-burners had learned to temper their chimneys with river-lime and the mountains of the upper reach still spit yellow brimstone upon the sheep-pens, there stood at the throat of the river a city of high brick-works called the Five Sluices. In that province the water was thick like sheep’s-blood because of the iron-dross, and the masters of the kilns built their furnaces seven cubits high, binding them with bands of green copper and wedges of dry larch-wood.
Among the low ash-shovellers lived a youth whose name is scratched upon the broken brick as Kol-of-the-Broken-Stoker. He was of no father known to the temple wardens, and his coat was made of five pelts of dog-skin boiled in lye, which stank whenever the steam-pipes spit their humours into the ditch. His daily portion was two measures of cold parched peas and a jug of sour swill from the malt-vats, because his hand had been mashed flat between two cog-wheels when he was a whelp, leaving his four fingers straight and hard like an iron rake.
In that dry month when the river had dwindled into a yellow ditch no broader than a cart-track, the Great Kiln of the Copper Guild, which was named the Seven-Belly Mother, was fed with three barge-loads of black pitch-coal brought down from the dry hills. The guild-masters wished to bake twelve thousand stone pipes for the water-gate of the governor before the new-water month. They commanded the shovellers to throw in the grease of dead river-horses and the black fat of mountain-wells, until the bricks of the tower were red like the tongue of a rabid wolf, and the lead that held the roof-gutters began to weep down into the rain-barrels like hot grease.
Kol sat beneath the lower intake-flue with his iron rake, clearing the soot-clots that fell through the iron gratings. The heat was so fierce that the wool of his hat began to smoke, and the beer in his skin-flask boiled until the leather burst.
Now it came to pass that the great hill of cinders behind the brick-yards had long been the roosting-place of the wild ash-pheasants, which are birds of great weight and foolish disposition. They build their mounds not of twigs or marsh-grass, but of the hot white lime that is scraped from the bellies of the smelting-pots, and they sit upon their eggs while the red embers fall through the ashes, because their skins are tough like the sole of an old sandal and their marrow is made of cold salt-stone.
A dog of the ash-dump had hunted an old cock of the pheasant-flock into the air-channel. The fowl, flying blindly through the iron louvres to escape the dog’s teeth, dashed its brains out against the draft-damper and tumbled into the ash-pit before Kol’s feet. In the bird’s belly, where the crop had been torn open by the iron teeth of the grate, lay an unbroken oval stone of gray calcium, thick as two fingers and hard like the grinding-bench of a miller. It was not yellow like the egg of a water-goose, nor brown like a turtle’s shell, but the color of dead slate when rain falls upon an old wall.
Kol took the lime-stone into his crooked hand, and though the soot around it was glowing with white fire, the stone was as cold as a pebble brought up from the bottom of a winter brook. His flat fingers ceased to smart from the blister-water, and when he breathed through his teeth, the stink of the burning coal-oil was turned into the coolness of wet river-sand.
He brought the stone to an old maker of clay-jars who sat by the ditch, one who had lost his speech because the governor’s soldiers had poured hot tallow into his ear in the year of the tax-rebellion. This carver possessed a little bronze horn that had belonged to his grandfather, with which he laid down the grease of sheep upon clay lamps before dipping them into the lead-water.
Kol said to him with signs of his iron hand: The Seven-Belly Mother has a great sickness in her throat, for the stone beneath the second damper is split like an old boot. Draw upon this cold lime the houses of the water-gates, that the tower may not fall down upon my head while I shovel the black stones.
The mute carver took the marrow of a sheep that had died upon the gravel-spit and mixed it with the fat of dead bees from a wall-hollow. He put the tallow into the bronze horn and heated it over a lamp of turnip-oil. With great labor, because his knees shook with the palsy, he traced upon the gray lime the lines of the three arches that hold up the aqueduct of the king. He drew the keystone with a square head like the chin of an ox, and along the ribs of the stone he ran twelve lines like the lashings of a raft, so that the arch could not slide from its seat though the water should beat upon it for forty winters.
They plunged the egg into a jar of water where the slate-grinders had washed their saws, until the shell was gray like the skin of a drowned donkey. Then the carver covered the arches with the hot sheep-grease and plunged the bone into a vessel of red clay from the brick-pits, leaving it there while the gong of the temple struck three times for the mid-day broth. At last they took the soot from the bottom of an oil-lamp and rubbed it into the pores of the shell with an old linen rag, until the third coat was black like the belly of an iron kettle.
When the grease was wiped away with a dry tuft of flax, the white bone of the bird stood out between the gray and the black like the bones of an ox that has died upon the salt-flat. The three arches stood side by side, and beneath them ran the likeness of the five sluice-bars, so clean that a blind mason might know with his thumb where the weight of the stone was meant to rest.
Kol took an iron borer from the boiler-bench and drilled through the small end of the bone until he touched the hollow chamber within. He drew forth the dry yolk with an eel-skin tube, and he washed the inner skin with the bitter salt-water that drains from the saltpeter-beds behind the city wall.
In those days there was a merchant from the South who had brought three skins of the Great Azure Salt which the sea-sorcerers boil from the blue water where the world ends. A pinch of that dust was worth three bullocks, for if a grain of it fell into a kettle of boiling soup, the broth would turn to white frost though the fire beneath was made of olive-wood. Kol had hidden three spoonfuls of this blue stone in the hollow hem of his dog-skin coat, having stolen it from the governor’s barge while the eunuchs were sleeping under their awnings.
He pounded the blue dust between two stones and poured it through the borer-hole into the belly of the egg, pouring after it three cups of the heavy cold brine that weeps from the salt-pans at the dark of the moon.
At the upper hole he drove a plug of soft lead that he had scraped from a cemetery cistern, boring through the metal six small holes no wider than the whisker of a cat. At the lower foot he bound an iron pick-point with strips of soaked ox-hide, so that the stone stood upright like a plumb-line when set upon a stone sill.
Now, on the fifth night after the moon had filled her belly, the great chimney of the Seven-Belly Mother began to groan with a sound like a cow that has her leg caught in an irrigation wheel. The brick-masters were drunk upon mountain-brandy in their tent of striped cloth, playing with ivory sticks for the skins of Spanish calves. They cried to the shovellers: Throw in the fat of the black hogs! If the heat falls before the second watch, every third man among you shall be beaten upon the belly with an ox-tail whip!
Kol was in the deep vault beneath the flue-gates. He felt the stone flags under his wooden clogs become hot like the lid of a baking-oven, and from the wall above his head there fell three bricks whose faces had melted into green glass.
A great crack, crooked like the path of an adder through dry leaves, ran from the foot-timbers of the furnace up through the fourth tier of masonry. The foundation-timber, which was an oak-trunk as thick as three men’s waists, began to char and weep red charcoal, for the air-chambers had filled with the suffocating stink of unburnt brimstone.
The shovellers threw down their rakes and scrambled for the ditch-hole, but the brick-fall had already choked the narrow gut with white-hot rubble, and they lay against the iron louvres howling like wolves whose tails have caught fire.
Kol took the cold bone from his girdle where it had hung by a thong of cow-gut. He ran through the falling soot to the corner of the furnace where the great oak beam was splitting in twain. The weight of eight hundred cart-loads of red-hot brick was leaning down upon that one corner, and the iron hoops that held the masonry had stretched until they were thin like wire.
He drove the iron pick-point of the egg into the cleft of the burning oak, striking the lead collar three times with the head of his iron stoker.
The ancient writing on the brick says that a sound came forth from the lead holes like the squeal of an angry sow when the butcher’s knife has touched her throat. A blast of wind, white like the foam of a mountain-torrent and colder than the wind that blows across the snow-fields of the northern barbarians, shot forth from the six small holes in the lead cap.
The white wind did not blow away like smoke, but it spread itself across the burning timber like a sheet of ice upon a horse-pond. The roaring of the chimney ceased with a sudden crack, like a dry stick broken across the knee.
The red bricks of the arch, which had been as soft as warm wax, turned instantly into cold stone the color of ash. The great crack that ran up the fourth belly did not widen by the breadth of a fingernail, though the iron hoops had snapped and fallen into the cinder-heap like broken dry willow-wands.
The shovellers who lay upon the grate looked up and saw that the whole mountain of brick was held aloft by nothing more than the cold ovoid that stood between the split ends of the oak timber. The three arches drawn upon the lime by the mute carver shone with a pale light like the light of the dog-star when the frost is sharp, and from the lead nozzle there came a thin, continuous hiss, like a kettle of river-water boiling over a hearth of cold stones.
For seven days the furnace remained cold, though forty shovellers threw pitch upon the hearth, because the coldness in the oak beam would not suffer the coal to take the spark. The brick-masters came down into the vault with their velvet gowns held high out of the muck, and they marvelled that the twelve thousand pipes were saved, though the kiln itself was as dead as a stone dropped into an old well.
The chief of the guild, whose name was Manno-of-the-Gold-Teeth, looked upon the egg that was wedged into the timber and said to his stewards: This is no work of the brick-makers’ gods, but the bone of an old demon that has died in the dung-heap. Pluck it forth with an iron tongs, that we may see what manner of silver is hidden within its belly, and cast this stoker-boy into the lime-pit, for he has looked upon the secret arts of the kiln-wardens without paying the two silver pieces of the guild-entry.
The stewards brought an iron pinch-bar such as they used to overturn runaway wagons. They set the tooth of the bar against the lead collar of the egg, and four great oxen-drivers from the hill-country threw their weight upon the lever to pry the stone from the wood.
The ancient chronicle says that the bone did not bend, nor did the iron pick-point draw out from the oak-grain.
There came a great groan from the center of the earth, like the falling of a mountain into an iron pot. The lead collar did not burst, but the cold brine within, having drunk the fury of seven days of coal-fire, was suddenly turned into an invisible fury.
The four oxen-drivers were cast backward against the wall with such speed that their skulls were driven into the soft lime like stones from a sling, and Manno-of-the-Gold-Teeth was blown through the ash-chute into the river-ditch, where he was caught upon a water-wheel and carried round thirteen times before a fisherman could spear him with an eel-fork.
The whole tower of the Seven-Belly Mother dropped straight down into its own cellar with a roar that was heard as far as the high rocks of the salt-sellers, falling not to this side nor to that, but sinking into its own foundation like an iron post into wet sand.
When the dust had settled and the city watch had dug through the heaps of dead ash, they found Kol-of-the-Broken-Stoker sitting upon a pile of unburnt coal, having received no more harm than a speck of gray soot upon his left eyelid. In his crooked hand he held the steel pick-point and the lead cap, but the shell of the pheasant-egg was gone, having returned into the fine white dust from which the birds make their nests upon the cinder-hills.
The Five Sluices were dry for three years because the stone pipes had been buried beneath ninety cubits of broken brick, and the governor died of the black jaundice because he had no clear water to brew his morning tea.
Moral of the Story: He who builds his tower too high upon the burning coal must not strike down the prop that holds the lintel, lest the stone that keeps the furnace cold should fall upon his own head; and it is a foolish master who weighs the cost of the stoker’s peas against the iron weight that holds the house from the pit.
