Lore
- In the humid bio-alchemical laboratories of Saṃsāra’s lower bayous, apothecaries and herbal vivisectionists long struggled to isolate cellular corruption before necrosis spoiled their botanical broths and medicinal broods.
- An apprentice tissue-warden harvested the thick, calcium-dense egg of a marsh-dwelling iridescent rail and hollowed the vessel using pressurized distilled saline.
- Employing traditional wax-resist batik methods, the warden inscribed the shell with nested circles of cell boundaries, divided nuclei, and branching lipid ladders using dyes derived from crushed bilberry skins, iodine crystals, and alkaline pond-rot scum.
- The hollow egg was filled with suspended nutrient agar seeded with pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal dust and hermetically sealed beneath an optic-grade quartz lens at the apex.
- Field chirurgeons, quarantine enforcers, and apprentice biomancers carry these talismans to monitor microscopic rot, shield cellular integrity against ambient venoms, and accelerate basic tissue division in damaged biological matter.
Description
- A palm-sized, oblong avian egg coated in a hard, glassy layer of vitrified non-reactive clear lacquer.
- The exterior displays geometric sectors of deep bilberry purple, iodine amber, and pale rot-green, divided by razor-sharp white wax resist lines illustrating dividing cell walls, nucleus clusters, and mitochondrial lattice loops.
- The upper pole is capped with a polished brass bezel retaining a tiny, domed optical-quartz lens, while the lower pole terminates in a flat silver aspirator cap that sits flush against skin or fabric.
- The egg emits a quiet, rhythmic wet pulsing sound, reminiscent of blood flowing through micro-capillaries, accompanied by a faint scent of distilled alcohol and fresh pond lily stems.
- Viewed via the Mind’s Eye, the wax-drawn cell walls flare with soft ultraviolet light, highlighting cellular distress, micro-parasites, and bacterial infestations in nearby biological tissue.

- Microscopic Acuity: Peering through the apex quartz lens magnifies biological matter up to one hundred times, allowing the user to examine blood drops, plant spores, tissue scrapes, or fluid cultures without requiring a stationary laboratory lens.
- Pathogen Intuition: The talisman vibrates with a warm, fever-like prickle against the wearer’s chest whenever a carrier of active contagions, cellular parasites, or necrotizing mold steps within 10 feet.
Activable Magic
- Mitotic Surge: As an action, the user presses the lower silver cap to an open, bleeding wound and channels mana into the shell. The talisman accelerates local cellular mitosis, instantly stabilizing a dying creature and restoring 1d4 hit points (or closing superficial flesh tears). Once used, this ability cannot be activated again until the next dawn.

Commerce and Acquisition of Pysanky 308 of the Mitotic Membrane
- Quarantine Apothecaries and Bayou Plague-Hedges
- Located along damp river delta outposts, marshland canal docks, and perimeter check-huts isolating infectious lowland settlements, these shops operate out of lime-washed timber sheds hung with drying lichen bundles and sealed vinegar carboys.
- The talisman rests suspended in glass jars of sterile saline behind wire-mesh counters; local plague-doctors and herbal hedge-surgeons sell them to travelers, swamp-cutters, and marsh-wardens entering high-risk rot zones to prevent parasite infection.
- The retail price at a marsh clinic ranges between 16 and 21 silver coins, with certified field herbalists and apothecary journeymen receiving the 10% tier discount to lower the cost to 14 to 17 silver coins.
- When selling an intact specimen back to a hedge apothecary, the buyer holds the egg against a slide of sour milk to ensure the interior agar still reacts to bacterial bloom, depositing 8 to 11 silver coins into the seller’s World Bank tally or paying out directly in pressed herbal wax vouchers.
- Municipal Chirurgeon Guildhalls and Scriptorium Infirmaries
- Situated within major urban hospital wings, collegiate medical universities, and sanitary bureau dispensaries, these authorized distribution houses feature polished slate counters, alcohol distillers, and glass display cabinets.
- Maintained under felt wraps beside precision bone knives, clean linen rolls, and brass aspiration bulbs, the item is purchased by apprentice chirurgeons and sanitary inspectors to conduct bedside fluid evaluations and arrest localized gangrene.
- The established guild exchange cost is 15 to 19 silver coins, with registered guild physicians and institutional staff eligible for their 10% tier-based price concession down to roughly 13 to 15 silver coins.
- A traveler wishing to sell an ovoid to an infirmary proctor must submit the piece to a clean lens check; the institution disburses 9 to 12 silver coins through the official World Bank clearinghouse, noting the transaction as academic supply replenishment.
- Nomadic Bog-Barter Rafts and Mire Caravans
- Found wandering through trackless peat swamps, sulfur-moss flats, and silt-laden mangrove deltas, these mobile bazaars trade from broad flat-bottomed barges pole-driven through stagnant waterways.
- Bog-traders keep these talismans tucked in cedar-bark boxes lined with raw wool, bartering them directly to peat-harvesters, trappers, and leper-caste outcasts who lack access to certified city chirurgeons and need immediate defenses against water-rot.
- Because sterile medical implements are exceptionally difficult to maintain in open marshes, bog-traders demand a premium markup of 24 to 30 silver coins (or 2 to 3 gold coins).
- Selling the item to a bog-trader yields a depressed offer of 6 to 8 silver coins via portable slate ledgers, as the barge-master must offset the danger of the internal agar culture spoiling under extreme marsh heat.
- Illicit Vivisection Dens and Flesh-Alchemist Exchanges
- Hidden within sealed sub-sewer chambers, illicit slaughterhouse basements, or illicit organ-preservation cellars beneath slaughter-slums, these underground dealers cater to flesh-stitchers, bio-saboteurs, and black-market chimera breeders.
- Brokers acquire the eggs to halt cellular degeneration in stolen biological organs during transit, or to extract the preserved crystal-infused agar for use in forbidden viral and mold-growth experiments.
- To avoid official health warden scrutiny and quarantine audit trails, transactions require direct physical coin or trade-bars, commanding inflated prices of 32 to 44 silver coins (3 to 4 gold coins) with no institutional courtesies granted.
- When liquidating the egg to a flesh-broker, an avatar receives an instant, untraced payment of 12 to 15 silver coins, with bonuses paid if the culture quarantine function can be demonstrated on fresh, necrotic tissue on the spot.
Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Offensive and Defensive Deployments of Pysanky 308
- Quarantine Canal Checkpoints and Mangrove Silt-Dikes
- Defensive Utilization: Guarding a perimeter gatehouse where migrant barges enter from pestilential river deltas, the warden monitors the talisman’s Pathogen Intuition. As a crowded skiff approaches, the egg pulses with a distinct fever-warm vibration against the bearer’s breastbone, warning that travelers beneath the awning carry early-stage swamp lung or parasitic river-rot before clinical boils appear. The warden promptly halts the barge at distance, utilizes Cytoplasmic Fortification to shield their own respiratory system from airborne water-rot spores, and requires the boatmen to moor in the outer sluice for disinfection.
- Offensive Utilization: If a desperate smuggler breaks quarantine and draws a blade smeared with virulent viper venom, the warden reacts with Lysis Screen, completely neutralizing the biological toxin on the blade as it connects with armor. The warden then counter-attacks, closing the distance and directing the quartz lens using Culture Quarantine onto the smuggler’s belt-pouches, instantly halting the cellular division and aerosolization of carried toxic spore vials to render the outlaw’s chemical weapons completely inert.
- Metropolitan Hospital Wards and Scriptorium Pest-Houses
- Defensive Utilization: Amidst overcrowded epidemic pavilions where bedding is damp with contagion and plague vapors hang heavy in the unventilated wards, the physician wears the egg resting directly over the sternum. Cytoplasmic Fortification protects the chirurgeon against ambient bacterial infection during deep-tissue lancing, while Microscopic Acuity allows rapid examination of blood drops placed directly onto the apex quartz lens. The physician identifies whether a patient suffers from simple sepsis or malicious bio-alchemical blights in seconds, avoiding catastrophic cross-contamination of the clean ward.
- Offensive Utilization: When an infiltrator or bio-saboteur attempts to contaminate the hospital cistern with necrotic tissue cultures, the investigator corners the culprit in the reservoir cellar. Tapping the egg’s silver base against the contaminated barrel, the user triggers Culture Quarantine to place the bacterial bloom in absolute stasis, arresting the decay before the city water supply is spoiled. If the saboteur turns violent, the investigator overpowers them and applies Mitotic Surge to an injured ally on the watch squad, knitting their lacerations and rallying them to subdue the fugitive.
- Subterranean Fungal Warrens and Rotting Sewer Vaults
- Defensive Utilization: Deep beneath city streets where toxic slime-molds, blood-spores, and necrotic weeping walls coat the masonry, the bearer relies on the talisman as an early-warning hazard monitor. As the party approaches patches of flesh-eating lichen, the egg’s wax lines flare with pale ultraviolet light, exposing invisible spore clouds drifting through the corridor. If an explosive spore pod bursts overhead, the user activates Lysis Screen to absorb the necrotic splash, keeping organic tissues from dissolving under the acid-rot spray.
- Offensive Utilization: Confronting an aberrant mold-beast or shambling zombie mass sustained by rapid fungal proliferation, the bearer turns the talisman’s quartz lens directly upon the creature’s core cluster. By focusing Culture Quarantine onto the primary mycelial root, the rapid division of the creature’s regenerative tissues freezes, suppressing its ability to heal from weapon strikes and allowing frontline fighters to sever its limbs without fear of the flesh knitting back together mid-swing.
- High-Altitude Cloud Sanatoriums and Spire Greenhouses
- Defensive Utilization: Operating within glass-domed botanical sanatoriums where delicate medicinal orchids and engineered alchemical grafts are cultivated, the botanist protects high-value crops from airborne rust-blights. Using Microscopic Acuity, the handler inspects root cuttings and leaf veins without damaging the specimen, identifying microscopic aphid larvae and fungal threads long before blight manifests visibly across the nursery rows.
- Offensive Utilization: In the event of rival guild saboteurs unleashing an aggressive cellular-rot draught into the botanical nursery beds, the avatar rushes to the affected sector and presses the silver aspirator cap to the infected soil. Triggering Culture Quarantine across the root bed locks the invasive rot in stasis, while a focused application of Mitotic Surge across the primary mother-plant forces immediate, healthy cellular division, enabling the valuable flora to outgrow and reject the dying necrotic tissue.

Perception of Activation:
- The Five Senses: User’s Perspective
- Sight: The iodine-amber, bilberry-purple, and rot-green bands on the shell begin to glow from within, causing the white wax lines depicting lipid membranes and dividing cell nuclei to blaze with vivid ultraviolet brilliance; simultaneously, a narrow, focused ray of pale violet light beams upward through the apex quartz lens.
- Sound: A faint, rhythmic squelch—like sea-sponge being gently squeezed underwater—pulses against the user’s collar, accompanied by a quiet, wet rush resembling arterial blood surging through micro-capillaries.
- Smell: A sudden clean rush of medicinal tincture fills the nostrils, carrying sharp notes of distilled grain alcohol, pungent iodine crystals, and bruised marsh-lily stems.
- Taste: A mineral, slightly salty tang settles upon the back of the palate, carrying the astringent taste of crushed bilberry skins and sterile saline wash.
- Touch: A soothing, localized warmth spreads outward from the lower silver cap against the skin, delivering a prickling sensation of thousands of tiny, painless needle-taps as connective tissue rapidly stabilizes.
- The Five Senses: Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Observers see the oblong egg suddenly ignite with an otherworldly ultraviolet halo, casting sharp violet shadows across the bearer’s chest while a needle-thin beam of light projects from the crown lens onto target surfaces.
- Sound: Those within arm’s reach hear a soft, low-pitched organic thrumming that matches a calm resting heartbeat, interspersed with faint, wet clicking sounds.
- Smell: Nearby individuals catch an antiseptic draft of evaporated surgical spirits and damp river peat.
- Taste: Observers experience no direct oral taste, though the surrounding air feels noticeably sterile and dry on inhalation.
- Touch: Anyone touching the user feels a gentle thermal bloom radiating from the bearer’s torso, accompanied by a faint micro-vibration in the air.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Mind’s Eye: The bearer’s consciousness perceives a ghost-overlay of biological structures: microscopic cell walls, capillary networks, and fluid exchanges in nearby bodies appear illuminated in translucent violet schematics.
- Aura Sight: Sensitives watching the spiritual field see ragged, necrotic rot and diseased miasmas around the target violently pushed back by an expanding, perfectly spherical dome of pearlescent lilac vitality.
- Pathogen Awareness: The user feels an intuitive biological compass in their chest, sensing the exact density, direction, and vector of active fungal spores, parasites, and bacterial colonies within ten feet.
- Cellular Sympathy: The bearer experiences a momentary phantom sensation of microscopic cell division—a fleeting sense of stretching and cleaving within their own tissues as the targeted matter rapidly regenerates or freezes.
- Positives
- Instantly identifies active contagion vectors, biological rot, and internal parasites before outward clinical symptoms emerge.
- Stabilizes dying allies and knits superficial flesh wounds through accelerated mitosis without leaving ragged scar tissue.
- Absorbs and neutralizes lethal necrotic splashes, corrosive venom sprays, and biological poisons on contact.
- Freezes the replication of dangerous spores, bacterial cultures, and invasive bio-weapons in place for a full hour.
- Negatives
- The luminous ultraviolet glow and focused beam make subtle operation impossible in dark tunnels, bayou nights, or clandestine wards.
- The lingering antiseptic and iodine aroma clings to clothes and gear, alerting keen-nosed predators and tracker hounds to the user’s presence.
- Rapid cellular acceleration leaves the immediate area feeling mildly numb, stiff, and fatigued once the initial adrenaline of mitosis fades.
- Focusing on microscopic overlays can induce mild vertigo, eye-strain, or depth-perception disorientation when returning gaze to normal distance.

Tools Required
- 1 Fine-Tip Kistka Stylus (brass funnel with a 0.25mm writing tube).
- 1 Bone Aspirator Needle and Vacuum Bulb (for fluid evacuation and pressurized flushing).
- 1 Alcohol Micro-Burner (soot-free spirit lamp for constant heat control).
- 3 Earthenware Dye Pots (glazed, non-metallic to avoid altering pH levels).
- 1 Calibrated Glass Pipette (for introducing sterile agar culture).
- 1 Watchmaker’s Lens Clamping Wrench.
- 1 Micro-Scale Slide and Cotton Polishing Swabs.
Skill Requirements
- Crafting (Wax-Resist / Fine Batik): Minimum Level 2 (for scribing unbroken lipid chains, double-membranes, and cellular division boundaries).
- Cytology / Bio-Alchemy: Minimum Level 1 (for cultivating sterile nutrient agar and stabilizing active mitotic catalysts).
- Chirurgery / Pathology: Minimum Level 1 (for properly attuning the ultraviolet resonance to organic pathogen vectors).
Crafting Steps
- Shell Evacuation and Sterilization
- Pierce the opposing poles of the iridescent rail egg with the bone aspirator needle, making a neat 8mm aperture at the apex and a 4mm aperture at the base.
- Use the vacuum bulb to draw out the albumen and yolk, setting them aside for non-magical compounding.
- Flush the interior cavity three times with boiling distilled saline, followed by an anhydrous grain-alcohol wash to dissolve the interior protein lining and leave pure white chalk lime.
- Allow the interior of the shell to dry under gentle lamp heat for 8 hours until completely desiccated.
- Dye Vat Preparation and Mordant Balance
- In the first glazed pot, dissolve the crushed bilberry skins in warm vinegar to establish the deep purple cellular core bath.
- In the second pot, suspend the sublimated iodine crystals in distilled water to form the golden-amber cytoplasmic stain.
- In the third pot, steep the alkaline pond-rot scum with a pinch of potash to create the pale green cellular wall bath.
- Maintain all three baths at blood-warm temperature over low coals.
- Wax-Resist Scription of the Mitotic Geometries
- Fill the heated kistka reservoir with melted beeswax from the spirit burner.
- Lay down the primary white lines upon the bare eggshell, outlining the master cell boundary, dividing nucleus pairs, and spindle fiber networks.
- Dip the shell into the iodine amber bath for 15 minutes, remove, dry with linen, and wax over the sections designated for cytoplasmic fluid reserves.
- Lower the egg into the bilberry purple bath for 20 minutes, dry completely, and wax over the dark nuclear bodies and mitochondrial clusters.
- Submerge the shell into the alkaline green bath for 25 minutes to lock in the exterior membrane fields, creating sharp tricolor division zones.
- Dewaxing and Core Inoculation
- Hold the shell alongside the alcohol micro-burner, turning it continually so the wax liquefies without charring the underlying mineral dyes.
- Swab the melted wax away using warm flannel cloths, exposing the fine white cell boundaries framing the amber, purple, and green quadrants.
- Blend the pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal into the liquefied nutrient agar until the suspension glows with faint violet phosphorescence.
- Draw the warm crystal-agar medium into the calibrated glass pipette and inject it through the base aperture until the internal chamber is completely filled without air pockets.
- Optic Fitting, Sealing, and Resonance Lock
- Thread the polished brass bezel ring containing the optical-quartz lens into the upper 8mm aperture, sealing the threads with boiled pine resin.
- Fit the flat silver aspirator cap into the lower 4mm aperture, securing it flush against the shell with waterproof silver-leaf solder.
- Submerge the entire assembly into the vitrified clear alchemical lacquer, curing it to a hard, glossy, chemical-resistant finish.
- Place the finished talisman against a drop of live blood on a glass slide, directing mana through the brass bezel until the lens projects a steady beam of ultraviolet light and the internal core begins its rhythmic fluid pulse.
Silt-Wife’s Glass-Eye and Rot That Walked in Barley-Broth
Unto the seventeenth turning of the yellow season, when the river had not yet learned to run between stone dikes and the mud of the low flats was as hot as the belly of an oven, there stood upon the reed-islands a village of fish-dryers whose speech was like the quacking of mallards. In that place dwelt a widow-woman whose slate-name was carved as Mara of the Silt-Pail. She possessed no bullocks, nor had she an iron pot to boil salt from the tide, but her apron was always spotted with the red grease of marshes and the yellow milk of bruised ditch-weeds.
In those days, the belly-rot was accustomed to come out of the standing water when the dog-star stood over the willow-copses. A man would drink a bowl of thin beer in the morning, and before the cows had come home from the rushes, his liver would turn into gray froth and his fingernails would drop into the muck like loose scales. The tomb-diggers of the delta had no time to scrape graves in the sandstone, so they cast the bodies of the dead into the mud-trenches with long poles of peeled elder, covering them with green reed-bundles until the wild pigs came out of the brake to tear them.
Mara sat upon a three-legged stool of alder-wood and took into her lap the dead child of her sister, whose chest was black like the bottom of a pitch-kettle from the biting of the water-fly. She had wept until the skin beneath her eyes was cracked like dried river-silt, and she spoke to the cold water that licked the posts of her floor-timbers, saying: If the mud is the mother of all worms, why does the mud eat the seed before the ear has grown four grains of corn?
She went forth at the dark of the moon, when the tide was low and the stinking gas puffed up from the black muck like bubbles of sour lard. She waded into the deep brake where the long-legged rail-bird builds its floating bed among the wild celery. That fowl is of a strange nature, for it walks upon the green scum of the pool without breaking the film, and its feathers drink the foul vapours of the rot-beds without losing their purple gloss, because it preens its belly with the grease of a bitter stone that it keeps within its craw.
Mara found upon a mound of rotten lilies a bird of great age that had been bitten by an otter. The bird was dying, but in the hollow of its nest lay an oval lime-stone of deep color, like the curd of milk that has been dropped into a vat of elderberry juice. It was heavy, like a lead weight from a fisherman’s drag-net, and when Mara took it up, the skin of her fingers ceased to itch from the marsh-scab.
She brought the egg into her smoke-hut, where the hanging fish dripped salt upon the dirt. She took a thin needle beaten from the silver wire of a dead priest’s ear-ring, and with great patience she bored two mouths into the bone, one wide like the pupil of an ox and one small like the eye of a needle. She put her lips to the small mouth and blew the white grease and the yellow core into a shell of abalone, setting it beneath the hearth-stone so the floor-beetles would not carry it away.
Then she washed the hollow chamber seven times with the boiling spirit that is squeezed from fermented barley-meal, until the inner wall of the shell was as white and clean as the tooth of a dog that has drowned in salt water.
There was in that town a maker of burial-jars who had been cast out by the elders because his thumb had rotted away from handling dead men’s shrouds. This carver had three stone cups of dye that he had stolen from the temple of the marsh-serpent. In the first cup was the dark purple juice of bilberries that grow upon the mounds of ancient kings. In the second cup was the golden tincture of the yellow stones that fishermen scrape from the throats of sea-leopards. In the third cup was the green grease that is taken from the belly of a water-log that has slept seventy winters in the mud of a ditch.
The carver took a thin pipe of bronze and filled it with the yellow fat of bees that had built their hive inside the rib-cage of a dead sheep upon the salt-meadow. He heated the pipe over a dish of fish-oil, and while Mara blew upon the wick to keep the flame white, he began to draw upon the lime of the egg the likeness of the little houses that live inside the red blood of a man.
He drew circles within circles, like the skins of an onion, and across the middle of each circle he laid a bar of double-grease, like two water-snakes sleeping nose to tail. Around the shoulder of the shell he traced nine hundred small seeds, each with a curled tail like the worm that turns into a gnat, and at the foot of the egg he drew the likeness of a fishing-net whose meshes were so small that no minnow could slip its gills through the twine.
They cast the shell into the golden cup of sea-stones until the bone was yellow like the fat of a stall-fed heifer. Then the carver covered the double-snakes with the hot bee-fat, so that the gold would remain asleep beneath the wax. They plunged the lime into the purple vat of the king’s berries, leaving it until the night was half-spent, and again the carver laid the grease across the nine hundred seeds. At last, they dipped the egg into the green broth of the water-log, boiling it over a small brazier of willow-charcoal until the green had eaten into the lime like salt into a fresh hide.
When the shell was taken from the kettle, it was ugly, like a speckled turtle from the ditch. Mara held the bone near the smoke-hole of her roof, where the hot breath of the peat-fire passed out. The bee-fat softened and wept down into a cup of sand, and behold, there shone forth upon the curve of the bird’s lime the three provinces of the small life. The net of the white lines held the purple cores like stones in a sling, and between the seeds ran the green waters of the marsh, so clear that a blind man might know by touching the shell with his tongue where the poison ended and the clean flesh began.
Mara took three pinches of the blue salt that the sky-merchants sell for two sacks of dried eels, which is the dust of the great crystal that sleeps in the center of the earth, and she mixed it with the clear jelly that drains from boiled sea-tangle. She funneled the wet medicine into the belly of the egg through the small needle-hole, until the hollow bone was full to the lip and gave forth a sound like the drinking of a calf.
At the upper mouth, where the hole was wide like an ox’s pupil, she set a round stone of clear mountain-glass that had been ground smooth upon a slate by a maker of mirrors. At the lower mouth she drove a hollow plug of beaten silver, perforated with thirty holes as small as the prick of a briar-thorn.
When the silver plug was sealed with boiled tree-resin, the egg began to move upon Mara’s palm with a small, wet leap, like a live sprat in a wet basket. A smell like the cutting of green lemons and the steam of a wash-house came forth from the silver holes, and when Mara held the glass stone to her eye and looked toward the grease-lamp, she saw that the light was broken into seven rings of pale purple fire.
On the morning when the great tide came over the salt-grass, the head-man of the drying-huts, whose name was Ban-with-the-Short-Chin, fell down beside his fish-trenches. His belly swelled like a wineskin that has been left in the noon-sun, and from his ears came a thin red water that smelled of spoiled clams. The women of his house threw dirt upon their hair and began to make the death-howl, while the elders stood three paces off with burning torches of dried fern, meaning to cast fire into the hut before the sickness could walk through the reeds to the other children.
Mara ran through the mud with the egg hanging between her breasts upon a cord of braided reed-twine. She pushed through the elders, though they beat her with the burnt ends of their poles, and she knelt in the fish-slime beside the head-man’s mat. She did not pour sheep’s broth down his gullet, nor did she mutter the nine names of the sea-devils, but she held the glass top of the egg to her right eye and looked into the yellow water that ran from his nose.
The old tablet of the river-priests says that the small glass did not show the face of the man, but showed the mud of his blood as if it were a great river full of ravening pike. She saw five thousand little worms with black snouts swimming through the red fat of his veins, biting the walls of his flesh until the skin was full of holes like a worm-eaten oar.
She took the silver foot of the egg and pressed it hard against the head-man’s neck, just where the great red cord beats under the ear like a frog in the weeds.
A sound like the tearing of a silk veil came forth from the brass ring of the glass eye. The purple houses upon the shell became dark like clotted blood, and from the thirty pin-holes of the silver plug there shot into the meat of the man thirty thin hairs of purple light, like the threads of a spider that has walked in an alchemist’s ink-pot.
The head-man gave a great shudder and his heels beat the dirt floor seven times, like the tail of a dying sturgeon. Behold, the black swelling of his ribs went down like a bladder when the plug is drawn, and the yellow water that ran from his skin became clear like the rain that falls from an alder-branch. The thirty hairs of light did not burn the meat, but where they touched, the red flesh closed its mouths, and the five thousand worms inside his blood were turned into white sand that came forth with his urine upon the reeds.
In three days, Ban-with-the-Short-Chin was eating his pottage with an iron spoon and beating his wives with his old cudgel, and the fame of the green and purple bone went up the river as far as the high stones where the king’s tax-men keep their barges.
For fourteen summers, no man died of the belly-rot in the lower delta, and the village of the fish-dryers grew so great that seventy-two new huts were built upon the mud, and the priests of the high town received fifty barrels of dry sprats every autumn as a gift for their temple-cats. If a child did but sneeze three times into his porridge, Mara would lay the silver foot to his throat, and the little houses upon the lime would drink the dark seed before it could sprout into a fever.
Then came to that coast a foreign physician whose hair was yellow like hemp, who traveled in a boat of three rudders with two eunuchs who held parasols of oiled paper over his head. He carried ninety jars of dried scorpions, powdered bones of bats, and the dried gall of Syrian bears, for which he took forty silver pieces from every sick lord who wished to live until his sons were bearded.
The foreign man looked upon the painted egg of the rail-bird and said unto Ban-with-the-Short-Chin: This woman is an eater of pond-mud and knows nothing of the twelve humours of the heart. Her egg is only an old bone that has been smeared with the berry-juice of sheep-stealers. Sell it unto me for thirty pieces of foreign tin, and I will give thee a powder of dried horn that will make the women of thy house bear three boys at a birth.
Ban, being an old man whose chin had grown even shorter with fatness and who loved the sound of tin coins in an earthenware jar, went into Mara’s hut by night while she was down upon the spit washing her sister’s aprons. He cut the reed-cord with a bone fish-scaler and carried the egg to the physician’s long-boat.
The yellow-haired man took the egg into his cabin of sandalwood and called for his iron hammer, saying: The magic is not in the painting of the shell, but in the blue salt that the woman has funneled through the silver throat; I will take the dust to the city of the Great King and sell it for three wagons of red gold.
He struck the glass eye of the egg with the head of his iron hammer.
The ancient scroll recounts that the egg did not break like the shell of a hen, but burst with a sound like the coughing of a great bull in a flooded cellar. A fog of pale purple smoke, smelling of boiled cabbage and the slime of dead ditches, came forth from the shattered lime and filled the cabin of sandalwood.
The smoke did not go up through the hatch-way, but fell upon the skin of the foreign doctor and upon the belly of Ban-with-the-Short-Chin.
In the space of one breath, the skin of their bodies began to divide into four parts, and the four parts divided into sixteen parts, and the sixteen parts became sixty-four, like the seeds of a dry cucumber that has fallen upon hot rocks. The meat of their arms dropped away from their bones in little white grains like hominy, and before the sun had set behind the willows, the long-boat had drifted into the reeds, holding only two heaps of warm, bubbling mush that the river-crabs would not touch because it smelled of iodine and dead lilies.
Mara came to the boat when the tide turned, and she found in the bottom of the wood only the silver aspirator cap and three pieces of the quartz lens that had been blackened by the heat of the breaking. She took the silver plug and threw it into the deep gut of the bay, where the river meets the great salt water, so that no man might ever again strike the belly of the small life with a blacksmith’s wedge.
Moral of the Story: He who seeks to break the skin of the seed to steal the secret of the green shoot will find only the rotten water of the ditch, and the hand that cuts the physician’s net will surely be eaten by the small worms that the net was woven to keep away.
