Pysanky 142 of the Gilded Pirouette

Lore

  • In the grand marble ballrooms and terraced silk-pavilions of Saṃsāra’s upper promenade, physical grace is both an art form and a survival discipline.
  • An aging ballroom instructor, tasked with training clumsy merchant-scions to survive duels fought entirely in three-quarter time, sought the aid of a festival wax-scribe.
  • Using the unbroken egg of a crest-plumed sun-crane, the artisan inscribed unbroken ribbon spirals, wind-swirl whorls, and interlocking slipper motifs using dyes boiled from saffron stigmas, crushed lapis, and cinnabar.
  • The emptied shell was filled with whipped cloud-pitch and pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal dust, then fitted with a hollow brass chime-spindle that rings whenever the bearer shifts balance.
  • Today, dancing masters, fencing choreographers, and acrobatic duelists wear these talismans at the hip or throat to maintain flawless cadence, align footwork across treacherous ballroom floors, and turn every dodge into performance art.

Description

  • A slender, polished crane egg glazed in a translucent, vitreous lacquer that catches and reflects ambient candlelight with a warm, iridescent shimmer.
  • Traced across its surface in raised, ivory-white wax lines are flowing wave ribbons, leaping wind-sprites, and endless braided spirals framing brilliant quadrants of saffron gold, imperial azure, and rose vermilion.
  • The upper pole is secured with an openwork brass collar pierced with tuned acoustic vents, while the lower base terminates in a small, spherical counterweight bell tuned to a crisp, high-soprano ring.
  • The egg emits a subtle, rhythmic musical hum reminiscent of a plucked harpsichord wire, accompanied by a pleasant perfume of dried sweet-clover, powdered resin, and warm beeswax.
  • Viewed via the Mind’s Eye, the wax spirals project an ethereal, spinning web of golden light beneath the bearer’s feet, outlining perfect step-lines, tempo markers, and rhythmic pivot arcs across the floor.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
  • Gear Slot: Waist or Neck Slot (slung from a braided silk ribbon as an ornamental sash weight or choker pendant)
  • Item Hit Points: Avatar’s maximum Hit Points plus 10 (Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
  • Armor Check: 0
  • Weight: 0.5 pounds
  • Attunement: Simple attunement (requires performing a flawless three-minute waltz or courtly court-step while holding the chime-spindle between the palms)

Passive Magic

  • Cadence of the Promenade: While worn, the egg vibrates in time with the bearer’s pulse, granting advantage or a +1 passive bonus on Acrobatics, Performance, and Dexterity checks made to maintain physical balance, navigate slippery dance floors, or read an opponent’s physical rhythm.
  • Kinetic Weightlessness: The hollow cloud-pitch core reduces kinetic jarring from sudden stops and tight turns, allowing the user to land silently from jumps and ignore movement penalties caused by formal court dress, heavy cloaks, or uneven floorboards.
  • Metronome Sense: The bearer intuitively senses the precise tempo, balance shifts, and directional momentum of every moving creature within 15 feet, granting a passive awareness that prevents being caught flat-footed by sudden shoves or off-beat lunges.

Activable Magic

  • Flourish of the Silk Fan: As a reaction when an enemy makes a melee attack roll against the bearer, the user executes a sweeping spin, ringing the basal chime to release a dazzling burst of refracted golden light. The triggering attacker suffers disadvantage on the attack roll, and the bearer may immediately shift 5 feet without provoking opportunity strikes. This ability can be used twice per day.
  • Lead the Promenade: As an action, the user taps the brass collar and steps into a commanding tempo. For 1 minute, the bearer and one willing adjacent ally move in perfect synchronicity; both gain a 10-foot increase to movement speed and can traverse difficult terrain without penalty as long as they remain within 5 feet of each other. This ability can be used once per day.
  • Reversal of the Parterre: As an action, the user initiates a dramatic pirouette and projects a spinning ring of azure-gold kinetic resonance in a 10-foot radius. All enemies within the area must succeed on a balance check or be gracefully spun off-balance, causing them to stumble and leave their guard open (granting the bearer’s allies advantage on their next melee strike against affected targets before the start of the bearer’s next turn). This ability can be used once per day.

Commerce and Acquisition of Pysanky 142 of the Gilded Pirouette

  • Court Academies and Salon Choreography Ateliers
    • Nestled along the columned balconies and grand boulevards of the upper promenade, these high-end instructional halls supply dancing masters, fencing choreographers, and aristocratic debutantes.
    • The talisman rests on velvet-lined mahogany plinths beneath glass cloches; proctors demonstrate the chime-spindle’s pitch with a silver tuning fork to verify harmonic resonance and balance.
    • The retail price ranges from 20 to 26 silver coins, though recognized academy instructors, guild performers, and registered duelists receive a standard 10% tier discount to lower the cost to 18 to 23 silver coins.
    • Liquidating a pristine ovoid to a salon proctor requires a three-step balance check on a polished marble plate, with the academy crediting 10 to 13 silver coins directly to the seller’s World Bank ledger.
  • Festival Wardrobe Boutiques and Performance Costumiers
    • Located adjacent to city amphitheaters, open-air opera stages, and canal pavilion markets, these theatrical emporiums cater to acrobats, stage actors, and wandering troubadours.
    • Displayed inside brass-barred cases alongside silk sashes, weighted dancing slippers, and stage foils, the talisman is bought by performers looking to maintain footing during aerial stunts and rapid stage maneuvers.
    • The standard cost in a theater costumier is between 17 and 22 silver coins, with recognized members of the Players’ Guild receiving their 10% trade reduction down to 15 to 19 silver coins.
    • Selling the egg to a costume merchant yields 8 to 11 silver coins recorded through the municipal World Bank terminal, filed under entertainment and performance apparatus.
  • Frontier Pleasure Barges and Traveling Carnivals
    • Operating out of brightly painted houseboats and silk-draped road caravans plying the outer canal ways and river ports, these vagrant troupes trade rare luxury curios to frontier settlements.
    • Traders hang the talismans from mirrored rigging to catch the lantern light, demonstrating their graceful spin to frontier gamblers, tavern performers, and ambitious duelists far from the capital.
    • Because genuine promenade artifacts are scarce along the frontier waterways, carnival merchants demand marked-up prices of 28 to 36 silver coins (or 2 to 3 gold coins).
    • Selling an ovoid to a traveling barge-master yields a deflated return of 7 to 9 silver coins in loose scrip or uncut river stones, as caravaners discount for transit risks and wear.
  • Gambling Salons and Clandestine Duelling Rings
    • Tucked behind velvet curtain partitions in private supper clubs, underground betting parlors, and illicit fencing pits, these clandestine brokers serve high-stakes gamblers and back-alley duelists.
    • Brokers sell the item to dueling champions looking to mask illegal footwork assists behind the appearance of an ornamental sash weight, or to gamblers seeking an edge during physical wagers.
    • Transactions bypass imperial performance registries and local tax rolls; private sales command 35 to 50 silver coins (3 to 5 gold coins) with no institutional discounts honored.
    • When fencing the talisman to a dueling ringmaster, an adventurer receives an immediate physical payout of 14 to 18 silver coins, with premiums paid if the basal chime still rings at the true high-soprano pitch.

Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Offensive and Defensive Deployments of Pysanky 142

  • Grand Ballrooms and Terraced Marble Salons
    • Defensive Utilization: Amid polished flagstones made slick with spilt champagne and candle wax, the dancing master utilizes Cadence of the Promenade to cross the mirror-smooth floor at full tilt without breaking stride. When an aristocratic assassin lunges with a concealed rapier, the avatar executes Flourish of the Silk Fan, pirouetting as the basal chime sounds. A dazzling burst of refracted golden light blinds the attacker, causing their thrust to bite empty air as the master slips five feet laterally into the swirl of screaming guests without offering an opening.
    • Offensive Utilization: Leading a companion through a skirmish in the grand ballroom, the avatar initiates Lead the Promenade, grasping the ally’s hand and establishing a commanding rhythm. Bound to this shared tempo, both dart between tumbling chandeliers and fleeing nobility with enhanced speed, ignoring shattered crystal and tangled silk trains. Sweeping into the center of the hall, the master triggers Reversal of the Parterre, executing a dramatic, sweeping turn that unleashes a ring of azure-gold force. The encircling guards spin wildly off-balance, stumbling into one another and leaving their flanks open for the ally’s counterstrike.
  • Crowded Festival Streets and Canal Promenade Bridges
    • Defensive Utilization: Navigating the packed, undulating wooden footbridges of a high festival, the master relies on Metronome Sense to map the chaotic surge of the crowd. Every drunken push, hidden pickpocket reach, and stumbling spectator is registered instantly in the mind. When city enforcers seek to pin the avatar against a bridge parapet, Kinetic Weightlessness allows the master to bound atop the narrow stone railing, land without a sound, and sprint across the wet stone edge without slipping into the black canal below.
    • Offensive Utilization: Cornering a fleeing spy upon a crowded pontoon bridge, the dancing master matches the target’s pace across shifting boat decks. Closing the distance, the avatar unleashes Reversal of the Parterre. The localized kinetic shockwave ripples across the wooden planks, causing the spy to lose their footing and pitch sideways against a mooring bollard, creating an immediate window to disarm and subdue the target before they can dive into the water.
  • Treacherous Rooftops and Gilded Pavilion Awnings
    • Defensive Utilization: Fighting high above the city along rain-slicked slate shingles and steeply pitched pavilion domes, the master moves unhindered by wind or loose tiles. When an archer looses a volley from an adjacent parapet, the avatar anticipates the release via Metronome Sense, stepping gracefully into the dead angle of the flight path. If cornered at the edge of a sheer drop, the master leaps toward a taut silk canopy below, using Kinetic Weightlessness to kill the downward momentum instantly, bouncing silently off the fabric without ripping the seams or jarring bone.
    • Offensive Utilization: Pursuing an enemy agent across a narrow roof-ridge, the dancing master engages Lead the Promenade with an acrobatic partner. Moving in lockstep along a line of wet ridge-tiles, the pair traverse the treacherous incline at a sprint, outpacing the quarry. Upon overtaking the agent, the master drops into a tight spin, sounding the chime to release Flourish of the Silk Fan. The sudden burst of radiant light against the dark night sky dazzles the target, causing them to flinch away from the edge and collapse onto the roof valley where they can be pinned.
  • Underground Duelling Pits and Vaulted Banquet Basements
    • Defensive Utilization: Trapped within a low-ceilinged wine cellar or a sandy subterranean fighting circle, the avatar is boxed into tight confines. As an opponent charges with a heavy broadsword, the master reads the shift in weight moments before the blade falls. Triggering Flourish of the Silk Fan, the avatar pivots around the brute force of the swing, leaving an illusory afterimage of golden ribbons that misdirects the blow into a nearby stone pillar, all while sliding cleanly into the attacker’s blind spot.
    • Offensive Utilization: Facing multiple street toughs in a cramped basement ring, the master uses Reversal of the Parterre to dictate the tempo of the confined space. The spinning pulse of golden resonance strikes the fighters within ten feet, turning their own aggressive forward momentum against them. As the ruffians stumble backward into wine racks and brick partitions with their guards broken, the dancing master steps forward in cadence, dispatching each off-balance opponent with precise, measured strikes.

Perception of Activation:

  • The Five Senses: User’s Perspective
    • Sight: The raised ivory-white wax ribbons and spirals blaze with a luminous saffron-and-azure brilliance; simultaneously, a shimmering ring of golden dust trails the user’s heels, tracing radiant geometric arcs and pirouette circles across the floor.
    • Sound: The basal counterweight bell strikes a clear, sustained soprano chime that harmonizes with a high-pitched, singing hum like bowing a crystal glass, cutting cleanly through deafening ambient noise.
    • Smell: A sudden rush of warm, sweet honeycomb, sun-dried clover, and powdered resin fills the nostrils, cut with the sharp, clean ozone scent of rapid acceleration.
    • Taste: A fleeting sweetness coats the back of the palate, reminiscent of spun sugar, candied orange peel, and light dessert wine.
    • Touch: A featherlight weightlessness floods the limbs, dissolving the drag of heavy garments and fatigue, while the soles of the feet tingle with a springy, frictionless cushion that makes every step feel effortless.
  • The Five Senses: Observer’s Perspective
    • Sight: Onlookers see the hanging ovoid flare into a spinning halo of refracted amber and rose light, leaving afterimages of trailing silk ribbons as the bearer pivots with unnatural, seamless elegance.
    • Sound: Observers hear a crystalline bell ring out in perfect triple meter, its acoustic frequency carrying across the room and making surrounding glasses and chandelier pendants chime in sympathy.
    • Smell: A gentle breeze scented with beeswax, sweet meadow grass, and theatrical rosin wafts outward across a ten-foot radius.
    • Taste: Those caught in the wake catch a faint, dry tang of perfumed talc and static in the air.
    • Touch: Nearby creatures feel a gentle, swirling updraft tugging at their cloaks and hems, followed by an abrupt, rhythmic vibration rolling through the floorboards beneath their boots.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions
    • Mind’s Eye: The bearer’s inner vision perceives the room as an illuminated musical score superimposed over the ground, where every step-line, pivot node, and turn of tempo is etched in threads of gold.
    • Kinesthetic Prescience: The user experiences an intuitive, bodily anticipation of physical movement, physically feeling where an enemy’s blade or balance will drift a half-beat before the action occurs.
    • Harmonic Cadence Sense: The avatar senses the heartbeat, breathing rate, and momentum of all surrounding creatures as distinct polyrhythms, immediately identifying who is off-balance or struggling to maintain footing.
    • Aura Sight: Mystically sensitive witnesses see the bearer’s aura uncoil into swirling silk banners of azure and gold that weave fluidly around incoming kinetic strikes, slipping force along curved paths rather than blocking it head-on.
  • Positives
    • Grants instant, fluid mobility and perfect balance across treacherous, grease-slicked, or uneven terrain without breaking stride.
    • Disorients melee attackers with dazzling bursts of light and unexpected shifts in angle, turning incoming strikes into wasted momentum.
    • Coordinates synchronized, accelerated movement with an ally, allowing pairs to navigate crowded rooms or escape ambushes in lockstep.
    • Provides total awareness of nearby movement vectors, making surprise shoves, trips, and off-beat flanking maneuvers nearly impossible.
  • Negatives
    • The bright flash of golden light and the resonant soprano chime instantly eliminate any chance of stealth, signaling the user’s exact position.
    • The momentum-altering fields require continuous, expressive movement; stopping dead or being pinned in place causes the kinetic suspension to collapse jarringly.
    • The pervasive sweet scent and glittering afterimages linger in the air for several seconds, leaving an obvious visual and scent trail.
    • The sudden return of natural body weight when the activation expires can cause a momentary sensation of heaviness in the calves and ankles.

Crafting Recipe: Pysanky 142 of the Gilded Pirouette

Materials Needed

  • 1 Slender Crest-Plumed Sun-Crane Egg (fresh, uncracked, collected from cliffside river reeds or terrace aviaries).
  • 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal (ground into an ultra-fine, shimmering cyan-gold dust).
  • 2 Ounces of Refined White Beeswax mixed with Clarified Tree Rosin (high-elasticity resist medium).
  • 2 Fl. Oz. of Cloud-Pitch (an alchemically whipped, buoyant resin solution).
  • 2 Ounces of Saffron Stigma Extract (for bright solar gold dye).
  • 2 Ounces of Pulverized Lapis Lazuli Slurry (for rich imperial azure dye).
  • 1 Ounce of Cinnabar and Rose Madder Wash (for radiant rose vermilion dye).
  • 1 Turned Brass Openwork Collar (perforated with tuned acoustic exhaust ports).
  • 1 Lathe-Spun Brass Acoustic Spindle with Spherical Counterweight Bell (tuned to a clean high-soprano pitch).
  • 2 Washers of Oiled Silk (for moisture-proof seating at the egg poles).
  • 1 Fl. Oz. of Translucent Vitreous Lacquer (high-gloss, scuff-resistant mineral glaze).
  • 1 Braided Silk Ribbon (1 yard, indigo or gold, for suspension).

Tools Required

  • 1 Fine-Tipped Brass Kistka Stylus (0.3mm aperture for hair-thin scrollwork).
  • 1 Micro-Drill and Fine Aspiration Cannula (for piercing and evacuating the fragile shell).
  • 1 Low-Heat Alcohol Lamp (for uniform, soot-free wax melting).
  • 3 Glazed Ceramic Dye Baths (maintained at lukewarm temperature to prevent thermal shock to the shell).
  • 1 Low-Pressure Slurry Syringe (for injecting the whipped cloud-pitch and crystal dust).
  • 1 Brass Spanner Wrench and Jeweler’s Tweezers.
  • 1 Silver Tuning Fork (pitched to high-soprano to harmonize the chime-spindle).

Skill Requirements

  • Crafting (Wax-Resist / Decorative Calligraphy): Minimum Level 2 (for scribing seamless concentric spirals, wave ribbons, and balance glyphs).
  • Performance / Dance Choreography: Minimum Level 1 (to mathematically calibrate the physical center of mass and pivot symmetry).
  • Artifice / Jewelry: Minimum Level 1 (for mounting the openwork collar, acoustic vents, and chime counterweight without cracking the shell).

Crafting Steps

  • Shell Evacuation and Balance Truing
    • Secure the sun-crane egg in a felt-lined cradle; carefully drill a 3mm hole at the apex and a 4mm hole at the base along the shell’s primary vertical axis.
    • Insert the aspiration cannula to evacuate the yolk and albumen, then flush the interior three times with a lukewarm, mild vinegar wash to strip the internal membrane clean.
    • Spin the hollow shell on a needle mandrel to verify balance; the weight must distribute evenly with zero rotational wobble.
    • Allow the shell to cure in warm, dry sawdust for 24 hours to ensure the inner wall is completely dry.
  • Dye Extraction and Bath Preparation
    • Steep the saffron stigmas in distilled water with a dash of alum mordant to produce the brilliant golden dye.
    • Grind the lapis lazuli into a fine, suspended aqueous slurry with a drop of ox gall to ensure smooth adhesion.
    • Blend the cinnabar and rose madder with weak spirits to create the luminous vermilion wash.
    • Keep all three baths warm beside the alcohol burner, ensuring temperatures never exceed blood-warmth.
  • Wax-Resist Division and Rhythm Scribing
    • Heat the beeswax and rosin blend in the kistka reservoir over the clean flame.
    • Draw the initial white reserve lines upon the bare eggshell, laying down the continuous running ribbon spirals, four-quadrant dividers, and wind-sprite flourishes.
    • Immerse the shell in the saffron gold bath for 15 minutes; remove, gently blot dry, and wax over the zones meant to retain the solar gold brilliance.
    • Dip the egg into the lapis azure bath for 20 minutes; dry thoroughly, then apply wax over the flowing water-ribbons and sky quadrants.
    • Submerge the remaining exposed sections into the cinnabar vermilion bath for 15 minutes to establish the deep contrast panels.
  • Dewaxing and Kinetic Core Filling
    • Hold the shell beside the alcohol flame, turning it continuously so the wax liquefies and runs onto soft linen cloths without charring the mineral pigments.
    • Buff the clean shell with flannel and powdered chalk until the ivory linework stands in sharp contrast against the tri-color quadrants.
    • Blend the pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal dust into the whipped cloud-pitch until the compound stays suspended in a buoyant, foam-like state.
    • Use the low-pressure syringe to inject the charged cloud-pitch through the base aperture, filling the egg entirely to establish frictionless kinetic dampening.
  • Acoustic Mounting and Harmonic Tuning
    • Seat an oiled silk washer at the apex hole, install the turned brass collar with its acoustic vents, and lock it in place with jeweler’s threading.
    • Seat the second washer at the base, insert the acoustic spindle through the core, and screw the spherical counterweight bell onto the lower thread.
    • Strike the silver tuning fork against the bell while rotating the egg; adjust the spindle tension with the spanner wrench until the bell sustains a clear, high-soprano chime when shaken.
    • Dip the completed assembly in a bath of translucent vitreous lacquer, allowing it to dry into an iridescent, protective finish.
    • Thread the braided silk ribbon through the crown loop, completing attunement by swinging the ovoid through three continuous, unbroken figure-eight arcs to lock the kinetic resonance.

Three-Beated Measure of Limping Fiddler and White Shell That Turned Stumble into a Leap

In the years before the river of salt was swallowed by the red hills, when the great kings of the high terrace still wore boots of beaten sheet-brass and made their daughters dance upon greased cedar boards to test their chastity, there lived in the lower alleys of the potters an old man whose foot was turned inward like a sickle. His name is written upon the river-slate as Balo-Who-Has-No-Heel.

He was not of the city tribes, but was bought for three measures of lentil meal from the boat-people who spear water-pigs in the black marshes. Because his left thigh-bone had grown crooked like the branch of a dry plum tree, he could not tread the clay in the mud-pits nor carry the double baskets of wet charcoal up the steep bank. Therefore, the master of the slave-pens gave into his keeping a dry gourd strung with the gut of a fat tom-cat, and bade him sit at the foot of the palace ramp to make a scrape-sound whenever the governor’s litter passed by, so that the porters might march without knocking their shoulders together.

In those days, the Viceroy of the Salt-Reach, whose belly was as round as a wine-skin and who took delight in nothing save the watching of young girls leaping over swords, proclaimed a seven-day feast for the marriage of his seventh nephew to the daughter of the Master of the Grain-Scales.

The Viceroy spoke into the ear of his heralds: Let every youth who carries a sword in the town come before the terrace of lapis lazuli on the night of the third trumpet. Let each take to wife the maiden who can tread the circle of twelve copper spits without soiling her hems with mutton-grease. But if any dancer stumbles, or if her foot falls upon the earth between the second strike of the drum and the third, the guard-men shall take her veil and cut off her hair with a sickle, and cast her into the lower cisterns to grind barley for the stable-camels.

Now among the maiden-girls of the basket-weavers was one named Tala, whose eyes were like two black beetles in a tub of goat’s-milk. Her father was dead of the lung-rot from blowing upon the glass-tubes, and her brother was chained to an oar on the governor’s barge because he had dropped a bundle of dried reeds into the drinking-tank. She had feet that were long and flat like two mud-skiffs, and when she walked through the fish-market, the boys threw the heads of dead carp at her skirts, shouting: Behold the goose that has lost its pond, for she cannot turn upon the curb without striking her shin against her sister’s basket!

Tala wept into the dust behind the kilns, for the guards had taken her brother’s tally-stick and said: If you do not dance before the Viceroy’s nephew, your brother’s back shall be salted with twenty lashes of the ox-sinew, and his skin shall be peeled like an onion.

Balo-Who-Has-No-Heel heard her howling from his place under the drain-pipe. He crawled out upon his good knee, dragging his cat-gut gourd through the dry horse-dung, and looked upon her flat feet.

He said to her with a mouth that lacked four front teeth: The drum of the Viceroy has two beats, which are heavy like the stomping of bullocks in a threshing-floor, but the heart of a running man has three beats, which run one after the other like water tumbling down a stone stair. If you dance to the drum of the Viceroy, your flat foot will find the copper spit and the spit will bite your bone. But if you take into your skirt the breath of the cloud-bird, the stone will become like sheep’s-wool, and you shall turn upon the point of a thorn without breaking the bark.

Now, high upon the red cliff where the stone-hewers cut tombs for the ancient embalmers, there lived an old crane whose neck was crowned with yellow wool like the beard of a priest. She was so old that the river had changed its bed three times since she had broken her own shell, and her feathers were as stiff as plates of horn. Because she was too ancient to fish in the swift water, she lived upon the dried honey-cakes which the widows threw down from the battlements to appease the ghosts of their uncles.

A hunting-hawk of the Viceroy, having broken its silver leash, pursued the crane across the river-reeds. The hawk struck her in the air above the brick-yard, so that both birds fell into the drying-basin where the yellow silt had settled. The hawk broke its beak upon an unbaked tile, but the crane, dying of the fall, laid into the warm yellow silt an egg that was slender like a cucumber, blue like the evening smoke of an oak-wood fire, and marked with circles of pale bone.

Balo took the shell while it was still warm with the dead bird’s blood. He washed it in the run-off of the dyer’s tub, where the wild saffron had been boiled with the gall of mountain-sheep.

He hobbled with his crooked knee to the booth of an old scribe who made seals for the barley-measurers, a man whose eyes were covered with a white film like the fat upon cold soup.

Balo said to him: The blind see the line where the stone ends and the air begins better than those whose eyeballs are clear. Dip your bronze pin into the fat of the mountain-bees, and draw upon this bone the three rivers that do not meet, and the four wheels that turn without an axle.

The blind carver took the mutton-grease and the comb of the wild hornets that had nested under the eaves of the granary. He put his thumb upon the small end of the crane-bone, and with his bronze pin he made sixty-and-six whorls, like the tracks of water-striders when the pond is stirred by a south wind. He made no straight lines, for he said: Straight lines belong to the surveyors who measure the ditches for the tax-collector, but the dancer who follows a straight line will have her skull split by the first post she meets in the dark.

They boiled the shell in the yellow water of the saffron-root until it took the color of a ripe melon. Then the blind man covered the ribbons with more honey-grease, and plunged the bone into a jar of crushed lapis-dust which a peddler of beads had dropped in the mud when the city wall was shaken by the subterranean bull. When they drew it forth, they rubbed into the remaining pores the red wash of the madder-root that grows in the graves of the sheep-stealers.

When Balo took his iron knife and scraped the yellow tallow from the shell, the white bone rose up between the blue and the red like the tracks of young deer through a field of burnt mustard.

With a bone-borer that had been sharpened upon a grave-slab, he pierced the top and the bottom of the shell. He drew forth the yolk with a straw of dry barley, and he filled the hollow belly with that which the mountain-men call the White Foam, which is the pitch that floats upon the pool of boiling oil in the high rocks where the sky-gods drop their torches. Into the white foam he threw a pinch of the celestial azure stone which the kings keep in ivory boxes to cure the madness of their concubines.

At the lower end he fastened with a thread of dried deer-gut a little round pellet of hollow brass, inside of which rolled a pebble of river-quartz no bigger than a pea from a beggar’s broth. When the egg was tipped by the breadth of a grain of wheat, the pebble struck the brass with a noise like a small bird pecking at the shell of a dried almond: ting, ting, tong.

Balo hung the ovoid to the girdle of Tala with a cord braided from the wool of a black lamb that had never seen the sun.

He said to her: When the Viceroy raises his silver staff and the bullock-drum begins to rumble like a belly with the wind-colic, do not listen to the iron gong of the soldiers. Listen to the small bird in your skirt. When the bird says ting, put your weight upon your great toe; when the bird says ting again, drop your chin toward your left shoulder; and when the bird says tong, let the earth slip away from your sandals as though you had dropped your cloak into a deep cistern.

The night of the feast arrived, and the courtyard of the lapis terrace was lit with forty cauldrons of seal-oil. The twelve copper spits were laid out upon the marble flags, each spit having been dipped in the grease of three roasted wethers so that if a man set his naked foot upon the metal, he would slide three cubits into the pit where the hunting-cheetahs were kept.

The daughters of the weavers were brought forth like sheep for the shearing, their faces painted with white lead and their knees shaking with terror.

The first was the daughter of the Master of the Grain-Scales. She was plump like a quail that has lived in a granary, and she stepped forward with five gold bracelets upon each arm. But at the fourth step, the drum of the Viceroy struck a double beat that was like the blow of an axe upon an oak log; the maiden’s slipper caught the edge of the third spit, the mutton-grease took her heel, and she fell upon her belly with a great crash of gold, breaking her two front teeth upon the marble rim. The guards seized her by the hair, cut off her braids with an iron blade, and dragged her away to the barley-mill while the nephew laughed into his cup.

Then Tala was pushed onto the floor by the point of an iron spear. Her knees were as cold as two river-stones, and her skirt of coarse linen was torn at the hem where the dogs had snapped at her.

The Viceroy roared from his seat of ivory: Whence comes this camel with the flat shins? Strike the great hide, stoker, and let us see how quickly she feeds the cheetahs!

The chief of the drummers, a great Negro whose shoulders were scarred with the brand of the galley-bench, brought down his two sticks of lignum vitae upon the skin of the bullock. The sound was like the falling of a city wall: BUM-BUM. BUM-BUM.

Tala’s heart stopped within her ribs, and her foot slipped upon the first spit.

Then the small brass bell at her hip spoke through the thunder of the leather: Ting.

The girl felt the bone at her waist turn cold, as if a hand made of running brook-water had been laid between her ribs. Her right foot, which was heavy and flat like a spade, rose up from the greased copper of its own will, not by the pulling of her muscles, but because the air beneath her sandal had become as dense as an inflated goat-skin.

The drum struck again: BUM-BUM.

The bell answered: Ting-tong.

The ancient chronicle, written upon the baked tiles of the governor’s library, states that the maiden did not walk, nor did she run after the manner of mortals. She began to turn upon the round ball of her left great-toe like a potter’s wheel when the kick-stone has been given a great shove by the foot of a sturdy youth.

The three arches of saffron and azure that were drawn upon the crane-bone began to shed a light like the moon when it shines through an awning of yellow silk. The ribbons of white bone, which the blind carver had traced with his horn of sheep’s-grease, uncoiled from the shell and lay themselves down upon the red marble like paths of frost.

Wherever the girl’s flat foot was about to touch the greased copper, the light of the egg ran before her sandal, turning the mutton-fat into dry salt and the polished stone into a floor of coarse wool.

She passed the third spit, and the sixth, and the ninth, not with the heavy stamp of the weavers’ daughters, but leaping three cubits into the smoke of the cauldrons and coming down upon the tip of her wooden patten with no more sound than a dried leaf dropping into a grass-plot.

The drum of the black man beat faster and faster, for the Viceroy threw his melon-rinds at the drummer’s ears, crying: Quicker, dog! Quicker! Break her shins before she reaches the twelfth iron!

The drummer struck the hide until the sweat ran from his loins into his sandals and the wood of his sticks began to splinter like broom-straws. But the brass bell at Tala’s hip did not change its measure. It sang its three beats against the two beats of the drum, high and clear like a cricket in a bread-trough: Ting… ting… tong.

Every time the bell struck tong, the girl turned three times in the air, her linen skirt standing out flat like the roof of a circular tent, so that the nephew saw neither her flat feet nor her thin face, but only a great wheel of blue and saffron spinning between the torches.

When she touched the marble beyond the twelfth spit, she did not stumble into the dirt, but sank down upon one knee with her hands crossed over her throat, her breath as smooth as milk that has stood for an hour in a stone cellar.

The Viceroy rose up from his cushions, his mouth open like that of a stranded carp, and the nephew dropped his golden cup into the cheetah-pit from sheer astonishment.

The Viceroy said to his chamberlains: Bring hither that foreign dancer, for she shall have thirty pieces of mountain-silver and a gown of Persian silk, and my nephew shall take her into his house before the moon drops behind the lime-kilns!

The guards reached out their iron gauntlets to raise the girl from the flags.

Now the nephew was a young man of small brain and great malice, who had never seen an egg that did not have a yolk to be eaten with salt. He saw the painted bone swinging from the girl’s hip by its black cord, and he cried: This is no maiden’s art, but a clock-work of the southern enchanters! The prize belongs not to the camel-footed girl, but to the brass rattle that turned her heels!

He drew his short hunting-dagger, which had a pommel of carved amber, and leaned down from the terrace to cut the black wool cord.

The ancient scroll says that the moment the steel of his dagger touched the lead collar at the head of the crane-bone, the pebble within the bell ceased its singing.

The three rivers drawn upon the shell did not fade, but they began to turn with such speed that the eye could no longer tell the saffron from the lapis, and the egg became like a wheel of white fire.

There came no roar of an explosion, such as comes from a cracked kettle of pitch, but a high, sweet singing note that was louder than seventy brass trumpets blown together in a narrow alley.

The nephew was not burned, nor was his flesh broken, but the momentum that had been gathered into the cloud-pitch from seventy-and-seven pirouettes was suddenly emptied into the hilt of his hunting-knife.

The young man was plucked from his seat of cushions as a bird is plucked from a twig by a north wind. He flew across the marble courtyard, over the twelve greased spits, over the forty cauldrons of smoking seal-oil, and through the cedar louvres of the high harem-gate, striking the great bronze gong of the water-watch with his forehead, so that the bell sounded three times for the mid-watch before he fell into the goose-pond behind the stables.

When the smoke had drifted down the river and the soldiers had ceased their howling, they found Tala standing upon the parapet of the city wall, two bow-shots away from the palace gate. In her hand she held only the black cord of lamb’s-wool and the little brass bell with its river-pebble, but the shell of the sun-crane was nowhere to be found, having scattered its blue and yellow dust across the terrace flags, where it was eaten by the Viceroy’s peacocks.

The girl fled into the black marshes where her father’s people dwelt, and she took with her Balo-Who-Has-No-Heel, carrying him upon her shoulders across the mud-flats where no horse could follow, because her feet, having once learned the three-beated measure of the white bird, never again sank into the black slime of the salt-ditches.

Moral of the Story: He who measures the grace of the dancer by the straightness of her shins is as foolish as the merchant who weighs the harp by the timber of its belly; and when the small bell sings in triple time against the heavy drum of the master, it is better to turn upon the great-toe than to reach with an iron knife for the string that keeps the dancer in the air.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)

Pysanky 142 of the Gilded Pirouette

Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)

  • Item Profile: A slender crane egg lacquered in an iridescent vitreous glaze, inscribed with ivory-white wax-resist spirals and ribbons separating quadrant fields of saffron gold, imperial azure, and rose vermilion. It features a perforated openwork brass collar at the apex and a spherical counterweight bell at the base, suspended from an indigo silk ribbon. It constantly rings with a faint, musical high-soprano chime.
  • Cadence of the Promenade (Passive): While worn at your waist or neck, you gain advantage on Dexterity (Acrobatics) and Charisma (Performance) checks made to maintain physical balance, perform court dances, or navigate slippery or treacherous terrain.
  • Kinetic Weightlessness (Passive): You ignore difficult terrain caused by fallen debris, slick ballroom floors, or clinging formal garments, and you take no damage from falling 20 feet or less if you are not incapacitated.
  • Metronome Sense (Passive): You gain a +1 bonus to your passive Perception. You cannot be surprised by melee attackers who approach along the ground within 15 feet of you, as you intuitively read their shifting physical momentum.
  • Flourish of the Silk Fan: When a creature within 5 feet makes a melee attack roll against you, you can use your reaction to trigger a dazzling flare of refracted amber light from the egg. The triggering attack is made with disadvantage. Immediately after the attack resolves, you can move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. This property can be used twice per dawn.
  • Lead the Promenade: As an action, you set a commanding cadence. For 1 minute, your walking speed increases by 10 feet, and one willing ally within 5 feet of you gains the same benefit as long as they remain within 5 feet of you. Both of you ignore difficult terrain for the duration. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the next dawn.
  • Reversal of the Parterre: As an action, you spin on the ball of your foot, unleashing an expanding ripple of azure-gold kinetic resonance. Each enemy creature within 10 feet must succeed on a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw or be thrown off-balance until the start of your next turn. The next melee attack roll made against an affected creature before the start of your next turn has advantage. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the next dawn.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

The Harmonious Crane Ovoid

Minor Enchanted Focus / Choreographic Talisman

  • Physical Description: A delicate, elongated avian egg shell decorated with winding, triple-meter wax-resist ribbons in saffron, lapis blue, and vermilion dyes. Capped with pierced brass acoustic fittings and a tiny spherical bell, it rests against the investigator’s chest or sash, radiating the scent of beeswax and vibrating with a soft, steady hum.
  • Poise and Cadence (Passive): When worn, the investigator receives a bonus die on Dodge and Art/Craft (Dance) rolls made to retain footing across grease-slick surfaces, narrow ledges, or chaotic ballroom melees.
  • Kinetic Suspension (Passive): The buoyant core reduces the severity of sudden drops; when calculating damage from falling, reduce the effective falling distance by 2 yards.
  • Kinesthetic Awareness (Passive): Sensing shifts in the weight and stride of anyone within 5 yards, the investigator gains a +10% bonus to Listen and Spot Hidden checks to detect silent, ambushing footfalls.
  • Flourish of the Silk Fan: Spending 1 Magic Point as a reaction allows the investigator to pivot into a flash of prismatic light and a ringing bell strike. An incoming hand-to-hand or melee strike suffers a penalty die, and the investigator immediately shifts 1 yard clear of the attacker’s reach.
  • Unbalancing Resonance: By spending 2 Magic Points and performing a sudden pirouette as an action, the investigator sends a humming kinetic shockwave across the floorboards. Enemies within 3 yards must succeed on a DEX roll or stumble, losing their next turn’s movement or suffering a penalty die on their next physical action.
  • Sanity Cost: Normal operation costs 0 Sanity. Viewing unnatural, non-Euclidean angles while aligning steps to impossible multi-dimensional tempos requires a 0/1 Sanity check.

  • Rhythm Sense (Passive): You immediately perceive the momentum, balance shifts, and intent of anyone moving within arm’s reach, ensuring you are never caught off-guard by sudden tackles, shoves, or unexpected blade thrusts.
  • Dazzling Fan: Spend 1 Stress to execute a sudden spin and bell strike as a reaction when attacked in close quarters. The sudden burst of radiant light and lateral slide improves your position by one tier (e.g., from Desperate to Risky) and allows you to disengage cleanly to a nearby vantage point.
  • Parterre Ripple: Spend 1 Stress to unleash a kinetic spin in the middle of a melee. An expanding shockwave sweeps out across the room, knocking nearby adversaries off-balance, creating an immediate tactical opening for your scoundrel crew to exploit.
