Lore
- Crafted during the early years of the current industrial era by an alchemical baker in the continent of Aterian, this egg was designed to alleviate the brutal scarcity of seasonings in grease-heavy steam kitchens.
- The artisan utilized a wax-resist dyeing technique to inscribe miniature geomantic sigils onto the unfertilized eggshell of a native marsh bird, soaking each wax layer in distillates of cinnamon sap, crushed brine-beetles, and wild ginger flower oils.
- Legend holds that the artisan spent forty-nine days applying the dyes one layer at a time to coax the latent magic within the egg’s mineral crust to react permanently with cooking heat.
- Passed down through apprentices of the Bakers and Butchers Guildhall, it is prized among wandering caravan cooks who must prepare meals from stringy monster meat in hazardous conditions without spoiling their stocks.
Description
- The item is a hard, blown bird egg about the size of a fist, coated in an ultra-smooth, glass-like glaze created by melted paraffin and alchemical lacquer.
- Its surface is densely patterned with geometric bands of charcoal black, turmeric yellow, and deep beet-red wax strokes forming repeating motifs of stylized cauldrons, wheat stalks, and rolling steam clouds.
- The egg is completely hollow inside, yet it feels as heavy as a solid river stone and radiates a persistent, gentle warmth that smells faintly of roasted roots and melted butter.
- Small copper filigree wraps around the pointed end, forming a tiny suspension ring that allows it to be hung from an outfit or dipped safely into boiling stockpots without chipping the delicate shell.

- If selling the egg to a family shopkeeper, the merchant haggles within a baseline of 10% of its base valuation per character tier level, paying out approximately 8 to 10 silver coins, with the proceeds transferred and recorded directly into the character’s World Bank balance while the shopkeeper logs the transaction details for royal trade assessors.
- Artisan Alchemical Apothecaries and Culinary Guild Bakeries
- Situated within major metropolitan districts and central island capitals near official Bakers and Butchers Guildhalls, these boutique craft shops are operated by licensed guild artisans who combine specialized herbal brewing with arcane baking methods.
- Transactions here involve formal trade assessments where the egg is evaluated through the Mind’s Eye to verify the intact state of the wax layers, the resonance of the internal lacquer, and the integrity of the copper suspension ring before it is sold as a professional kitchen heirloom or alchemical catalyst.
- The retail price in an artisanal apothecary is higher due to recognized craft certifications, ranging between 18 and 22 silver coins, though active members of the associated culinary or alchemical guilds can purchase it for approximately 15 silver coins through official guild dispensation.
- When selling an intact egg to a guild apothecary, the shopmaster typically offers between 11 and 13 silver coins directly to the character’s World Bank ledger, though sellers may face inquiries from local guild inspectors regarding the provenience and harvesting origin of the shell.
- Wayside Trading Caravans and Frontier Outpost Waystations
- Positioned outside fortified city gates, along secured military highways, or near coastal ferry landings, these roadside merchant stalls cater to traveling adventurers, outland scouts, and mercenary squads preparing for extended expeditions into monster-dense territories.
- The egg is bought and sold out of canvas-topped supply wagons or temporary trade tents where cash transactions and physical bartering are customary, often traded directly by cooks seeking portable tools that eliminate the weight of hauling bulky iron seasoning kits.
- Due to the harsh conditions of regional trade routes and high transport risks across wilderness zones, outland merchants charge a premium of 25 to 30 silver coins (or 2 to 3 gold coins) for immediate field acquisition.
- Outpost traders purchasing the egg from passing adventurers offer lower liquidity, typically settling between 7 and 9 silver coins deposited into the seller’s bank account, often attempting to leverage the scarcity of local buyers to secure a steeper discount.
- Black-Market Alchemical Fences and Smugglers’ Docks
- Tucked into secluded alleys of deep-water port cities, subterranean factory tunnels, or unmonitored wharf districts, these illicit operations handle stolen goods, uncertified guild recipes, and items stripped from dead avatars without recording official ownership logs.
- Deals are conducted in secret backrooms without official scrutiny or municipal tax assessors, with buyers seeking the item either for its utility in untracked wilderness camps or to smash the shell and extract its rare, dye-soaked organic reagents for black-market consumable recipes.
- Purchasing the item from a black-market broker requires full face-value payment in loose physical gold coinage—completely bypassing the World Bank—with asking prices reaching between 30 and 40 silver coins (equivalent to 3 to 4 loose gold coins) with zero guild discounts offered.
- Selling the egg to a fence yields an immediate payout in untracked gold coins without questions regarding ownership or origin, with illicit buyers paying standard merchant rates of 9 to 10 silver coins, or up to 20 silver coins (2 loose gold coins) if the fence possesses an urgent client demanding discreet food preservation tools.
Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Offensive and Defensive Deployments of Pysanky 472
- Subterranean Caverns and Fungal Deep-Ways
- Defensive Utilization: In damp subterranean tunnels saturated with poisonous spores and stagnant water pools, an avatar unhooks the egg from their belt and lowers it directly into a canteen or helmet filled with contaminated cave drippings. As an action, invoking the Infusion of the Simmering Shell purifies the liquid into a steaming, clean root-vegetable broth, completely neutralizing ambient marsh toxins and field pollutants so the party maintains hydration without taking internal poison damage. When setting a forward watch post in pitch-black grottos, an avatar resting near the warm shell uses the item’s Savory Transmutation aura to keep damp provisions dry and warm, preventing subterranean rot grubs and slime-molds from contaminating party supplies during necessary downtime.
- Offensive Utilization: In closed caverns inhabited by burrowing beasts or giant insect swarms that hunt by scent, the user taps the shell to trigger the Expedited Hearth-Bake upon a metal container filled with collected monster fat, pungent subterranean tubers, and boiling mineral wash. The rapid flash-heat creates an intense, greasy vapor cloud within twenty minutes, which can be vented down tunnel shafts to irritate the sensory antennae of subterranean beasts, driving them out of natural chokepoints or forcing them into prepared kill zones where the party holds the tactical reach advantage.
- High-Altitude Cloud Cities and Airship Decks
- Defensive Utilization: While exposed on the exterior catwalks of high-altitude floating towers or open zeppelin observation platforms where freezing slipstreams cause severe chill, the wearer cradles the egg against their chest within the waist wrap. The constant thermal emission of the wax shell warms the avatar’s core and counters numbness in the hands, ensuring grip strength remains intact when climbing safety cables between suspended aerial platforms. When a sudden high-altitude gale douses camp cookstoves, an action spent triggering the Expedited Hearth-Bake instantly restores cooking temperatures within enclosed galleys, ensuring the crew receives hot meals to avoid physical fatigue penalties during extended flights.
- Offensive Utilization: When boarding an enemy raider skiff or fending off hostile aerial marauders on an open deck, the avatar uses the egg’s Culinary Intuition via the Mind’s Eye to evaluate the biological components of defending beasts or avian mounts, instantly identifying internal temperature thresholds and structural soft tissues. By using an action to heat a heavy cauldron of culinary oil to a rolling boil via the egg’s rapid-heat property, the character prepares an improvised scalding hazard that can be tipped down boarding ramps or funneled onto invaders attempting to scale the ship’s suspension riggings.
- Coastal Swamps, Estuaries, and Saturated Mangroves
- Defensive Utilization: In humid coastal biomes plagued by infectious biting insects, decomposing vegetation, and brackish mires, the wearer leverages the egg’s Seasoning Radiance to mask the smell of exposed sweat, blood, and body heat. The pervasive culinary aroma of boiled spices and root herbs acts as a natural deterrent against non-sentient carrion flies and swamp leeches that track prey through scent. Additionally, using an action to prepare a revitalizing meal through the Essence of Sustenance allows damp and battered party members to consume nutrient-dense rations within a twenty-minute halt, securing an extra point of temporary hit points to absorb incoming damage from swamp ambushes.
- Offensive Utilization: When confronting amphibious predators or territorial reptiles lurking beneath muddy waterways, an avatar uses a fluid collector to extract noxious swamp bile or acidic tree sap, pouring it into a shallow trench along the bank. Touching the egg to the trench and activating the heat resonance causes the liquid to boil furiously, sending acrid, stinging steam across the water’s surface to disrupt the line of sight of submerged foes, forcing aquatic creatures onto dry banks where their movement speeds are severely compromised.
- Urban Industrial Slums and Steam-Factory Districts
- Defensive Utilization: Within crowded metropolis streets, soot-covered alleyways, or mechanical factory floors where grease and toxic steam vents pollute the air, the bearer openly displays the egg from a shoulder sash to project its aromatic aura. The soothing scent of freshly baked crust and rich kettle stock cuts through heavy smog, offering a distinct psychological anchor that helps allies resist disorientation while navigating congested manufacturing quarters. If cornered in a fortified cellar or backroom during a street riot, the party uses the egg to maintain hot meals without producing revealing plumes of black chimney smoke, keeping their redoubt completely concealed from roving urban militia or rival guild patrols.
- Offensive Utilization: In tactical close-quarters combat within tight warehouse alleys, an avatar combines mundane culinary liquids—such as high-proof alchemical spirits, rendering grease, and crushed dried peppers—inside a copper cookpot. By using an action to trigger the egg’s flash-heat activation directly against the base of the pot, the mixture instantly reaches boiling pressure, transforming into a scalding, aerosolized spray when the lid is cracked open toward charging adversaries. This sudden improvised chemical blast causes intense burning and coughing fits, granting allies an immediate positional opening to disarm hostile foes or execute coordinated retreats through industrial backdoors.

- True Sight: An entity observing through true sight witnesses the shell bathing in a distinct ultraviolet aura characteristic of active magic, with schools of transmutation and evocation weaving together in tight, luminous purple-violet and scarlet threads along the egg’s mineral seams.
- Soul Sight: Observers with soul-perceiving faculties sense the egg acting as a conduit of pure, nourishing warmth, registering a soft, glowing gold-white vitality that seems to settle the inner unrest of living spirits and provide emotional grounding.
- Tremorsense: Creatures resting on the same stone or surface detect a faint, high-frequency rhythmic micro-vibration pulsing from the user’s ground contact, corresponding to the internal thermal boiling cycle locked within the egg.
- Positives
- Immediate thermal comfort eases stiff joints and counters numbness caused by cold weather or damp environments.
- The sudden presence of rich, savory scents suppresses the nausea, appetite loss, and revulsion often triggered by rot, swamp mires, or foul subterranean gases.
- Provides an instant, clear sensory confirmation that the magical enchantment has properly engaged without failing or misfiring.
- Observers and allies naturally experience a morale-boosting sense of safety, homeliness, and culinary anticipation, lowering immediate stress during brief rests.
- Negatives
- The sudden emergence of strong, delicious aromas can alert nearby predatory monsters, feral beasts, or starved wilderness scavengers that track prey primarily by scent.
- The luminous amber glow produced by the shell can compromise concealment in pitch-black caves, unlit forest redoubts, or covert military outposts.
- The audible hum of simmering and crackling wood may reveal the user’s hidden position to perceptive sentries standing beyond line of sight.
- Induces acute hunger pangs and salivation in the user and companions, making prolonged periods of ration rationing emotionally taxing if actual sustenance is unavailable.

- Crafting (Artisan / Fine Leather & Jewelry): Minimum Level 1 (for operating the kistka stylus and twisting the copper filigree).
- Arcane Conduit Training: Minimum Level 1 (for channeling the magic crystal’s charges into the shell’s matrix).
Crafting Steps
- Shell Preparation and Evacuation
- Using a fine needle, carefully drill a single miniature puncture at the base and apex of the unfertilized marsh bird egg.
- Insert the hollow bone needle and slowly pump air to extract the yolk and albumen completely, taking care not to fracture the inner membrane.
- Flush the interior with warm salt water, drain thoroughly, and set near a warm stove for six hours until the interior mineral lining is completely dry.
- Reagent and Dye Alchemy
- Warm the sweet gum tree sap in a ceramic vessel and combine it with the crushed brine-beetle hemolymph to create an alchemically reactive dye mordant.
- Divide the mordant into three batches, thoroughly mixing each with the fermented beet extract, powdered turmeric, and bone-ash charcoal in separate ceramic pots.
- Crush the Tier 1 magic crystal into a fine, sparkling dust and dissolve one-third of the powder evenly across the three dye mixtures to bind the arcane weave into the pigments.
- Wax-Resist Pattern Inscription
- Melt the pure beeswax in the kistka stylus over the brass burner flame.
- Apply the heated wax directly to the white shell to mask off the pure white highlights, drawing the primary outlines of wheat stalks and cauldron handles.
- Submerge the egg into the golden-yellow dye for twenty minutes; remove, pat dry, and use the kistka to apply a second layer of wax over every region meant to permanently retain the yellow coloring.
- Lower the egg into the deep-red dye bath for twenty minutes; retrieve, let dry, and lay down the third wax layer over the kettle flames and geometric border bands.
- Dip the exposed surface into the charcoal-black dye bath to form the deep, contrasting background fields of the talisman.
- Wax Removal and Arcane Annealing
- Hold the coated egg adjacent to the heat of an open hearth flame, turning it continuously as the built-up wax layers soften.
- Gently wipe the melting wax away using the soft linen buffing cloth, revealing the full vibrant geometric bands beneath the cured pigments.
- While the shell remains hot, paint the entire exterior with a thin coat of purified paraffin-tree sealing lacquer to protect the exposed pores from water and physical wear.
- Setting and Final Attunement Consecration
- Bend the annealed copper wire into a sturdy loop at the top, fashioning delicate side arms that wrap down the upper shoulders of the egg to cradle its apex securely.
- Seat the remaining two-thirds of the powdered Tier 1 magic crystal inside the hollow void of the shell to serve as an internal mana battery, sealing the bottom hole with a dab of hardened lacquer.
- Hold the finished egg within the palms of both hands, focus the Mind’s Eye, and channel an active surge of thought through the copper ring until the shell resonates with a gentle hum and emits the distinct scent of fresh baked crust, solidifying the item’s culinary magic.
Shell of Boiling Fats and Seven-Hungered Scribe
Unto the year which counting was not yet written down upon the flat bark, there walked a maker of loaves whose name had become broken off from the stone slab. He had two legs of clay and a belly that made loud barking noises like an angry hound whenever Helios rode through the air above the great water. In the days of the very high dampness, before the kingdoms had set the roads with gray rock, the earth was full of many chewing monsters that had horns upon their cheeks and walked with heavy feet into the soup-pots of the village. The people had only cold leaves to put into their teeth, and the roots of the forest tasted like bitter mud and made the blood of the children run thin like ditch water.
The maker of loaves took in his two hands a hollow sphere dropped from the nest of a great sky-fowl that nested upon the wet reeds where the water flows always from the sun-rising to the sun-sinking. He did not eat the yolk because he wished to hold the void within the shell, saying to his own shadow that if the hollow is great enough, a man may hide his hunger inside of it where the demons cannot smell it. But his sister who lived upon the state border said that he was foolish with his head, for the belly cannot chew upon empty air, and the royal tax-men would soon come across the ditch to demand three parts of ten from every bushel that had not even grown from the sand.
He walked forty leagues toward the smoking mountain where the magma runs like red porridge under the world’s crust, because there were no iron stoves in that age, and the people had not yet caught the elemental spirits to make the friendly steam of the wheels. By the edge of a great boiling pit, he met a wild grandfather whose skin was like the bark of an old ash tree and whose eyes could see the small bugs that dwell inside of water. The old grandfather held a needle made of copper bone and was melting the fat of bees over a pot that smelled of burned grass and sour honey.
Why do you carry the white round stone of the duck, asked the old grandfather who had no name that could be pronounced by a tongue of meat. The maker of loaves spoke that he had nothing to boil within his kettle except the skin of marsh frogs and the peelings of gray melons which tasted of rot and sorrow. The grandfather laughed until his teeth fell into the dust, and he said that if a man writes the signs of fire upon lime-stone, the stone will think that it is an oven, and if a man paints the pictures of fat bull-beasts upon the brittle egg, the water will think that it is the broth of a king’s banquet.
Then they sat upon their haunches while three suns went behind the great gas sphere that hangs in the blue vault like a swollen bladder. The old grandfather took the fluid collector which was made of glass and the horn of a goat, and he went into the swamp to prick the stems of the weeping trees until their milk ran thick and sweet like yellow grease. He also caught seven creeping beetles that lived upon the edge of the bitter brine, and he squeezed their shells between two flat pebbles until their juice was as dark as a bruised plum.
Take the wax of the stinging flies, said the wild grandfather, and write the fence that keeps the heat from running away. The maker of loaves took the copper bone and drew crooked lines around the middle of the egg, but because his hand was shaking from the weakness of his marrow, the lines were wobbling like the path of an adder through dry leaves. He drew three kettles with fat bellies, and he drew five heads of bearded grain, but the translation from the old tongue says he also drew the ears of an ass because he thought the picture of an ass would make the soup strong enough to carry heavy loads.
They dipped the egg into the yellow water of the ground roots, and then they covered the yellow marks with more wax of the flies, so that the darkness could not eat the sun that was caught upon the lime. Then they dipped the egg into the juice of the red beets which had been fermented beneath the manure of oxen for twenty days until the stink was great enough to frighten the mountain spirits. When the egg came out of the red bath, it was the color of a fresh wound, and the maker of loaves wept with his nose because he thought of the blood of his kin who had died when the great winter had no loaves.
Then they put the egg into the black broth made of burned bones and wood-soot from an altar where no meat had been burned for a hundred years. When the shell was as black as the midnight when the moon hides behind the green world, the grandfather held it close to the flame of a dry cedar knot. The wax ran down like tears of oil upon the sand, and behold, beneath the grease there appeared the yellow wheat and the red cauldrons, shining as if a fire was burning inside of the bird’s lime.
The old grandfather took a small glass pebble which had been taken from the belly of a dead horned bear, and he pushed it through the little hole where the albumen had been sucked out. He plugged the hole with tree-wax and spoke seven words that sounded like the clattering of dry pots. Eat now of the water, said the grandfather, for the shell has remembered the fire, and the fire has remembered the fat of the ancient beasts that died before our grandmothers were born.
The maker of loaves took his round pot of beaten copper, which was battered on the sides from the clubs of robbers, and he filled it with the bitter slime of the ditch where horses had walked. He dropped the painted egg into the water. In the space of twenty breaths, the muddy water began to jump and make great bubbles that sounded like laughter, and there arose from the vessel a thick cloud of white smoke that smelled of garlic, salted marrow, sweet parsnips, and the crisp fat that drips from a pig when it turns upon a spit of ironwood.
He drank of the broth until his skin stretched tight over his ribs like the hide of a drum, and he did not vomit, neither did his bowels turn to water, but he felt the strength of three draft horses enter into his knees. He ran through the hills shouting that he had conquered the hunger of the moon, holding the warm egg in the cloth of his belt where it shone through his tunic like an ember from a furnace.
When he returned to his village, the people were sitting in the dirt with gray faces, waiting for the rains to wash them away because the local warlord had taken all their dried peas for the use of his spearmen. The maker of loaves cried out with a loud voice and called all the widows and the small boys who had swollen bellies from eating clay. He placed the painted shell into a great trough of river water that had turned green with summer weed, and he threw into the water only handfuls of common thistles and the dry husks of grain that had been trodden into the stable floor.
Behold, the trough began to roar like a forge, and the smell of roasting meats and leek pudding filled the street so strongly that the guards at the city gate dropped their shields to sniff the wind. The folk came with wooden bowls, with split gourds, and with the palms of their hands, and every man who drank of the warm broth felt his heart leap up like a bird out of a snare. For forty days and forty nights the trough was never cold, and the children of the village grew round cheeks and ran through the marketplace singing songs about the great bird whose bone was full of butter.
Yet there was in that town a greedy man whose name was Malach of the Iron Scale, who held the trade of salt and dried fish in his right fist and gave nothing to the poor unless they pledged their children to his rowboats. Malach smelled the kettle from his stone porch, and his liver became yellow with envy, for no man would buy his gray salt or his rotten cod while the maker of loaves gave away the rich fat of the painted shell for nothing.
Malach went to the captain of the royal tax-men, who had three feathers upon his iron cap, and said unto him that the baker was a maker of wild magic who had stolen the fat of the king’s cattle through the air by means of an unclean devil hidden inside of a spotted pebble. The captain of the tax-men was a man who loved gold more than he loved his own mother’s eyes, and he took eight archers who had bows of ash and went to the house of the maker of loaves at the hour when Helios was sinking down into the red mist.
They broke the door of wicker and found the baker sitting upon a sack of grain, polishing the painted egg with an oily rag of wool. The captain seized the baker by the beard and smote him with the flat of his broad knife until his teeth were loose, saying that all things which produce grease belong unto the throne and unto the daughters of the queen who collect the rental of the ground. They snatched the egg from his waist and threw the baker into a deep well where the water was cold and had no ladder.
Malach and the captain of the tax-men carried the shell to the great hall of the castle where the local prince was feasting upon dry biscuits and sour wine, for the land was lean and the hunters had found no deer in the thorns. Look, said Malach, we have brought the stone that cooks without wood, which will feed your archers so that you may march across the salt marshes and burn the cities of the three kings that sit upon the west coast.
The prince was pleased in his dark heart and commanded that a great vat of iron, which was used to melt the pitch for the fortress walls, should be brought into the middle of the hall. They poured into the vat ten barrels of well water, and they threw in stones, old boots of hide, dead crows from the roof, and the bitter moss that grows upon tombstones, for Malach boasted that the magic egg would turn the dirt of the earth into the grease of roasted calves.
They dropped the painted shell into the iron vat. The water began to turn black, and it rose up with great foam that smelled of sulphur and burned tallow. The prince held his gold horn and drank of the liquor as it splashed over the lip of the iron. But because the shell had not been asked with the words of a baker, but had been taken with the bloody fist of a soldier, the liquor did not taste of herbs or butter, but of stagnant horse-sweat, bitter gall, and the salt that forms upon the brow of a dying mule.
The prince became mad with fury and cast the bowl into the face of the captain of the guards, shouting that they had brought him poison from the witches of the bog. Malach, fearing that his head would be set upon a pole over the moat, reached his fat arm into the boiling pitch to snatch the shell back, meaning to wash it in sweet water and hide it in his own cellar.
When his fingers touched the hot lime, the shell did not give forth the gentle warmth of the hearth, but it let loose the trapped anger of the dragon-crystal that was lodged in its womb. The egg burst with a sound like the breaking of five thousand shields of brass, and a great fountain of scalded grease and black vapor filled the stone chamber. The prince, the captain, and Malach the merchant were covered from their hair unto their sandals with the boiling slime, which burned like the pitch of the underworld and could not be quenched with water.
The great roof of the hall, which was made of ancient cedar beams, caught the spark of the broken crystal and fell down upon their heads with a great shower of embers. The tax-men and the archers fled into the darkness, weeping and crying that the gods of the kitchen had come to devour the castle. The stone fortress burned until the morning light was gray upon the water, and when the smoke cleared, nothing remained of the prince’s house except five blackened pillars and a heap of sour grease that the dogs would not touch.
As for the maker of loaves, the poor women of the town came to the well with ropes of braided hemp and drew him forth out of the cold water before he was drowned. In the place where the fortress had stood, he found only a small piece of the painted shell lying in the ashes, no larger than the nail of his thumb, still bearing upon its curve the red foot of a kettle and a single grain of golden wheat. He carried that fragment within his mouth until the day he was gathered unto the dirt, and whenever he drank of cold water, it tasted unto him of honey and the crust of morning bread.
Moral of the Story: The spoon that is filled by greed shall feed only the fire, but that which is seasoned with the salt of common folk will keep the pot bubbling through seven winters of lean grass.

The vessel interior rapidly heats to cooking temperature for 20 minutes without requiring an external fire. If a party spends 20 minutes of a short rest preparing and consuming a meal cooked with this effect, up to four creatures gain 1 temporary hit point. This property can be used once per dawn.
Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
The Petrovo Ovoid of Bountiful Sustenance Minor Enchanted Artifact / Folk Curio
- Physical Description: A hollowed wildfowl egg decorated with ritual wax and dye bands representing folk harvest deities. It feels surprisingly solid, pleasantly warm, and persistently smells of fresh hearth bread. A minute piece of an unidentifiable mineral rattles inside the sealed shell.
- Inherent Properties: Food, unboiled water, and raw camp supplies kept within 2 yards of the egg do not succumb to mold, bacterial rot, or mundane decomposition while in its presence.
- Alchemical Purification: By immersing the ovoid in up to 5 gallons of fouled, stagnant, or swamp water for one uninterrupted minute, the liquid is stripped of natural biological pathogens and takes on a comforting, nutrient-dense, savory flavor.
- Sanative Cookery: Preparing a hot group meal using the ovoid requires a successful Survival (Any) or Art/Craft (Cook) skill roll. If successful, up to four investigators who consume the 20-minute hot meal feel deeply soothed and grounded, immediately recovering 1 point of lost Sanity (once per investigator per expedition) or gaining a +5% bonus to their next CON check against environmental fatigue and exposure.
- Sanity Cost: Viewing or utilizing the ovoid does not call for a Sanity roll under standard conditions; however, witnessing its patterns flare with self-illuminating purple and golden light while boiling foul fluids calls for a 0/1 Sanity check.
Blades in the Dark
The Baker’s Wax-Bound Ovoid Curio, Arcane Implement (1 Load)
- Item Profile: A lacquered, wax-resist talisman decorated with forbidden folk wardings from the forgotten reaches outside the lightning barriers. When handled, it emanates comforting heat, crackles faintly like burning wood, and smells of baked pastry crust.
- Passive Effect (Purify Provisions): While packed on your person or hanging at your belt, standard provisions, dried rations, and field waters carried by your crew resist spoiling, taint, and corruption from ambient vapor, sewer drippings, or ectoplasmic grime.
- Simmering Transmutation: When you submerge the curio into a vat or pot of stale water, sludge, or dregs, expend 1 Stress to invoke its transmuting warmth. Over a few minutes, the mixture turns into rich, warm, and restorative soup. When you perform this during downtime or in a safe retreat, the crew clears +1 Stress during a culinary relaxation indulgence, or gains +1d to resistance rolls against physical starvation, toxic ingestion, or freezing drafts during the next score.
- Volatile Overheat: When pressed into a sealed mechanical pipe, locked container, or oil vat during an infiltration or skirmish, you may push yourself to flash-ignite the egg’s alchemical resonance. This instantly generates scalding steam and aerosolized boiling oil, establishing Great Effect when creating a sudden diversion, clearing a tight hallway, or burning through frozen security mechanisms, after which the shell becomes dormant until the next downtime.
