Lore
- In the ancient scriptoriums of the Badarian and Tasian river valleys, words were recognized not merely as records of trade or law, but as the foundational geometry through which conscious thought bound ambient magic into material reality.
- Master calligraphers spent decades grinding lapis, dried kohl, and powdered tier 1 magic crystalline cells into luminescent inks capable of holding prayers addressed to the celestial pantheon and the primordial Earth Mother, Gaialilith.
- Charm 742 was inscribed during the shifting tides of the Blooming week by an artisan scribe whose fingers had begun to calcify with crystalline formations after years of channeling mana through a reed pen.
- Crafted as a protective devotional talisman, the charm was worn by traveling scribes navigating the contested borders between island kingdoms, warding their physical forms against ambush while preserving the sacred texts they carried across the open waters.
- Passed down through monastic guild halls, the item absorbs microscopic traces of mana from the wearer’s daily writing rituals, keeping the metaphysical bond between word and intent unbroken.
Description
- The charm consists of a polished, octagonal brass medallion suspended from a braided chord of raw desert silk and silver thread.
- Inset at the center of the medallion is a flat, parchment-colored ceramic tile fired with crystalline glazes, upon which intricate geometric knotwork and flowing calligraphy are drawn in shimmering azure and gold ink.
- The script forms a repeating concentric litany praising endurance, clarity of mind, and the protective grace of ancient guardians.
- When held in the hand, the medallion radiates a faint, rhythmic warmth and the distinct scent of dried saffron, cedar gall ink, and pulverized river reeds.
- When active magic channels through the talisman, the inscribed calligraphy lifts slightly off the surface, casting a soft, blue-gold reflection that hovers an inch above the brass frame.

- Shop Environment:
- Hidden within forgotten alleyways of port metropolises, unmapped caverns beneath city foundations, or unmarked stalls within rural settlements beyond the watch of country garrisons.
- Run by fencing rings, illicit tinkers, and deserters who operate entirely outside the jurisdiction of constitutional monarchies, tax assessors, and royal courts.
- Items for sale may have been salvaged from fallen avatars, looted from battlefields, or obtained through unrecorded estate seizures.
- Purchasing Mechanics and Cost:
- Goods in black-market dens are always sold at full cost or higher, with no standard faction discounts recognized.
- Purchasing Charm 742 through illicit channels costs between 12 and 18 Silver (or 1.2 to 1.8 Gold).
- The black market does not interface with the World Bank; transactions are strictly physical, requiring payment in unmarked gold, silver, or electrum coins directly handed over.
- Selling Mechanics and Cost:
- Smugglers and back-alley fences do not keep shop logs, ask no questions regarding origin or true names, and maintain complete secrecy regarding the identity of the seller.
- If the black-market dealer has an immediate buyer or an urgent need for calligraphic warding items to bypass official border wards, they may pay up to twice the standard merchant rate, yielding between 10 and 18 Silver in hard coinage.
- Under ordinary circumstances with low local demand, they will pay a flat cash rate of 5 to 8 Silver in hand.
Roleplay Applications in Environmental Combat: Offensive and Defensive Execution
Urban Metropolises, Stone Alleyways, and Capital Library Archives
- Defensive Roleplay Operations:
- In the tightly packed paved avenues of an island capital or the echoing marble halls of a grand scriptorium, an avatar navigates ambushes from rival guild agents or municipal enforcers by leveraging the tight architecture.
- When a crossbow bolt or thrown dagger flies from an arched window, the avatar touches the chest-mounted brass medallion and executes a swift somatic flourish with an ink-stained stylus, invoking the Somatic Verse of Warding.
- The avatar roleplays chanting the brief litany of protection in under six seconds, causing the inscribed ceramic tile to flash with brilliant azure radiance.
- Shimmering geometric phrases written in glowing gold ink unspool outward into the air, interlocking like a physical shield of crystalline script that intercepts the kinetic blow, raising the avatar’s Armor Check to deflect the strike harmlessly into the cobblestones.
- If retreating through an archive doorway or narrow corridor, the avatar spends ten uninterrupted minutes performing the Ritual of the Sealed Accord, chanting ancient verses while dragging a finger of wet ink across the doorframe threshold.
- As pursuing foes reach the threshold, the glowing calligraphy locks into the stone, forcing the lead attacker into an opposed check or anchoring them within ten feet of the boundary line, halting their pursuit while the avatar slips deeper into the stacks.
- Offensive Roleplay Operations:
- When cornered in a confined alleyway where collateral property damage must be minimized to avoid city guard intervention, the avatar utilizes the precision of the Inscribed Word of Rebuke.
- The avatar grips the charm, focusing their conscious thoughts through the medallion’s conduit while vocalizing a single, sharp word of condemnation with an artistic forward gesture.
- The talisman discharges a missile of compacted force shaped like a sharp, flying calligraphic glyph, striking a foe thirty feet away with precise impact to knock them off balance.
- If the avatar has previously scrutinized the adversary using the Mind’s Eye and uncovered their true name from municipal registry logs, the avatar whispers that hidden moniker during the somatic casting, causing the glyph to blaze with double force as it strikes the target’s vital centers.
- In situations where complete surprise is paramount, such as infiltrating an illicit counting house, the avatar channels mana into the medallion silently, releasing an instantaneous bolt without speaking a single syllable, accepting the slight reduction in impact force to ensure no alarm is sounded.
Dense Island Jungles, Wild Overgrowth, and Feral Wilderness Frontiers
- Defensive Roleplay Operations:
- While traversing uncharted island interiors where hostile predatory plants and evolved feral beasts roam outside the safety of country patrols, the charm acts as an essential environmental barrier.
- When an unpossessed jungle stalker or pack of raptorial predators lunges through the thick canopy, the avatar uses the charm’s passive Aegis of the Written Word to reinforce their physical stance.
- The avatar roleplays feeling the ambient mana of the wild forest push against the charm’s inscribed boundary, generating a localized kinetic field that prevents sharp briars, poisonous spines, and predatory claws from finding purchase on the neck and chest.
- During field camp setup along riverbanks, the avatar uses a reed pen and river mud to trace the Ritual of the Sealed Accord across the camp perimeter, chanting the protective hymn to Gaialilith into the night air.
- The ritual boundary forms an invisible ward against wandering beasts lacking past-life memories, turning them away or anchoring them at the forest edge if they attempt to breach the campsite.
- Offensive Roleplay Operations:
- Fighting through dense vegetation hampers wide weapon swings, making the directed kinetic discharges of the charm the primary means of engagement.
- When facing aggressive fauna concealed behind heavy fern cover, the avatar uses the Scribe’s Resonating Eye passive trait to rapidly assess the beast’s health and physical vectors through their Mind’s Eye.
- The avatar extends their hand, drawing a rune in the air that resonates with the medallion, launching an Inscribed Word of Rebuke that burns through foliage to hit the beast directly.
- The concussive impact tears through the underbrush, utilizing the avatar’s tier damage pool to stagger the charging beast before it closes into melee range.
- If an ally is grappled by constricting vines or tendril-bearing flora, the avatar targets the foliage with a rapid normal chant, blasting the plant matter away from the ally’s limb with focused arcane impact.
High-Altitude Steam Zeppelins, Airships, and Cloud City Walkways
- Defensive Roleplay Operations:
- Combat on the narrow outer catwalks of an airship or the floating discs of a cloud city is defined by severe crosswinds, open drops, and steam discharge from engine manifolds.
- When boarded by sky pirates or targeted by flying predators, the avatar’s hand stability from Linguistic Equilibrium prevents them from losing their balance or dropping delicate items in the howling slipstream.
- When snipers on opposing decks loose projectiles, the avatar triggers the Somatic Verse of Warding, speaking the defensive words over the roar of the steam turbines.
- The hovering barrier of script deploys directly into the wind, catching incoming projectiles in mid-air and dispersing their momentum before they can breach the avatar’s worn defenses.
- If defending an airship’s bridge or balloon access hatch, the avatar completes the Ritual of the Sealed Accord across the hatchway, locking the entrance so that intruders are physically halted and unable to board the flight deck.
- Offensive Roleplay Operations:
- In aerial engagements, distance and wind shear make physical archery and thrown weapons unreliable, whereas the charm’s guided magical glyphs travel true along line of sight.
- Standing on the deck of a moving vessel, the avatar channels their thoughts through the medallion to loose the Inscribed Word of Rebuke against approaching winged beasts or hostile deckhands.
- The avatar narrates the release of bright force sigils that cut straight through the rushing wind, striking targets up to thirty feet out to knock them off landing struts or damage glider wings.
- Against an enemy sky captain whose name was revealed during earlier diplomatic negotiations, the avatar shouts their true name into the wind, delivering a destructive burst of double damage that shatters the captain’s protective gear and breaks their offensive focus.
Deep Sea Habitations, Submerged Reefs, and Sunken Caverns
- Defensive Roleplay Operations:
- Operating within the high-pressure aquatic realms of the underwater civilizations requires adapting all vocal and somatic components to fluid dynamics.
- Because vocal chants sound muffled and distorted underwater, the avatar relies heavily on precise underwater somatic gestures and bubble manipulation to maintain the charm’s efficacy.
- When predatory marine monsters or hostile aquatic combatants strike from the dark depths, the charm’s passive protection automatically cushions the crushing impact of hydraulic pressure waves and charging strikes.
- In desperate moments within flooded tunnels, the avatar executes the Somatic Verse of Warding, sending glowing calligraphic symbols drifting through the water like luminous sea anemones, forming a dense circular ward that absorbs bites and tridents.
- At cavern choke points or habitat hatchways, the avatar traces the Ritual of the Sealed Accord using bioluminescent algae ink, sealing the portal against deep-sea predators that attempt to invade the air-pocket sanctuary.
- Offensive Roleplay Operations:
- Water resistance makes conventional physical weapon strikes sluggish, but the magical force projected by the charm travels through water with concussive velocity.
- When engaging hostile aquatic foes, the avatar uses a Silent Inscribed Word of Rebuke, focusing mental intent through the central ceramic tile without opening their mouth to lose precious breath.
- The discharge creates a focused cavitation bubble in the shape of an ancient rune that shoots forward, collapsing violently against the target’s hide to deliver base force damage and tier dice impact.
- If the avatar can speak within an underwater air dome or using magical translation apparatus, they utilize full somatic chants to project larger shockwaves, blasting swimming foes back into the open sea currents.

Perception of Activation:
Five-Sense Perceptions
- Visual Perception:
- User’s Perspective: When the user channels conscious thought or speaks the activation chant into the charm, their vision immediately perceives the inscribed ceramic surface brighten with a vibrant azure core surrounded by gilded light. The calligraphic knotwork appears to lift roughly an inch off the brass frame, rotating slightly in three-dimensional space while projecting faint geometric shadows onto the user’s hands and chest.
- Observer’s Perspective: An onlooker sees the octagonal brass medallion suddenly blaze with a sharp, steady blue-gold luminescence that pierces through shadow, fog, or dust. As the user completes the somatic gesture or ritual chant, luminous trails of calligraphic script unspool into the open air around the user’s upper torso, forming a floating, translucent barrier of sacred text.
- Auditory Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The user hears a low, resonant harmonic hum that sounds like vibrating metallic strings, accompanied by the crisp, rhythmic scratching of a dry reed pen moving rapidly across dense vellum. When offensive magic is discharged, a sharp, concussive snap resembling a cracking whip echoes in their ears.
- Observer’s Perspective: Witnesses hear a distinct, resonant chime reminiscent of striking a small brass bell, followed by a soft, whispering undertone that mirrors the syllables of the activation chant even when cast silently. The acoustic discharge is directional, carrying a pressurized rush of displaced air when the ward or force bolt is projected.
- Olfactory Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The immediate air around the user fills with the dry, pungent aroma of hot iron gall ink, crushed saffron, powdered cedarwood, and the faint, sweet ozone smell characteristic of active crystalline mana discharge.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers standing within five to ten feet detect a sudden, crisp scent of old library parchment, dried desert herbs, and scorched brass braziers, contrasting sharply with the ambient environment.
- Tactile Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The brass casing warms rapidly against the palm, vibrating with a high-frequency thrum that tingles through the fingertips, wrist, and forearm. A gentle, pressurized barrier of kinetic air pushes outward from the medallion, creating a subtle cushion against the user’s chest.
- Observer’s Perspective: An observer attempting to strike or touch the user during activation encounters a resilient, spring-like resistance in the air, feeling an electrostatic repulsion that pushes hands, weapons, or claws away from the warded zone.
- Gustatory Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The user experiences a dry, metallic, and slightly chalky taste at the back of the mouth, similar to breathing in pulverized limestone and crushed mineral pigment during the casting process.
- Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing in the direct line of the charm’s kinetic discharge tastes a dry, ionized tang in the air, akin to the taste left on the tongue before a thunderstorm.
Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Mind’s Eye Manifestation:
- User’s Perspective: The user’s Mind’s Eye displays a momentary overlay of quantifiable operational data, confirming the active attunement link, the exact remaining health point pool of the medallion, and the numerical boost added to their Armor Check. The intrinsic geometric properties and structural weaknesses of nearby scanned targets become highlighted in their mental field of view.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers endowed with an active Mind’s Eye perceive the charm’s tier ranking, its defensive potency, and the sudden shift in the wearer’s defensive statistics, recognizing the active spell state and identifying the item’s origin.
- Soul Sight and Arcane Spectrum:
- User’s Perspective: Looking through soul sight, the user watches their personal mana weave merge directly into the coin-sized Tier 1 crystal embedded in the charm, witnessing glowing blue tendrils of soul energy circulate through the brass conduits and crystallize into active kinetic matrices.
- Observer’s Perspective: Beings utilizing soul sight or true sight see the user enveloped in an intense, pulsating ultraviolet and gold aura. The soul signature of the user appears temporarily anchored and fortified by the structured patterns of the ancient scribe’s craft.
- Tremorsense and Kinetic Resonance:
- User’s Perspective: The user senses a subtle, rhythmic feedback through the soles of their feet and hands, feeling the kinetic vibrations of incoming attacks long before they make physical contact, granting a preternatural awareness of approaching physical vectors.
- Observer’s Perspective: Subterranean or burrowing creatures with tremorsense detect a sharp, localized vibrational frequency radiating into the earth beneath the user, registering the kinetic ward as a solid, immovable mass rather than soft organic matter.
- Astral and Spatial Awareness:
- User’s Perspective: During ritual activations, the user feels a minor planar drag, sensing the metaphysical weight of Gaialilith’s domain steadying their physical coordinates and preventing unintended spatial drift.
- Observer’s Perspective: Entities capable of perceiving spatial density observe a localized tightening of the planar fabric immediately surrounding the user, indicating that the threshold has been reinforced against unauthorized passage.
Positive and Negative Perceptions
- Positives:
- Clarity of Purpose: The user experiences heightened mental focus, steady fine-motor control, and a calming sensation of divine protection that suppresses fear and physical hesitation during high-stress combat.
- Unambiguous Defensive Feedback: The user immediately knows whether the ward has successfully intercepted an incoming blow through the clear auditory resonance of the brass thrum and the visual integrity of the floating runes.
- Intimidation and Presence: The brilliant display of floating glyphs and the authoritative chime of the talisman project a powerful presence, causing unpossessed beasts and low-tier foes to hesitate before attacking.
- Negatives:
- Sensory Overload: In dark or confined spaces, the brilliant blue-gold flare of the ceramic tile and the strong aroma of ozone and ink can temporarily dazzle the user’s night vision or irritate their respiratory passages.
- Loss of Tactical Stealth: The unmistakable visual brilliance, pungent saffron scent, and echoing acoustic bell chime make silent operations difficult unless the user specifically foregoes somatic flourishes for a silent, reduced-potency cast.
- Residual Lingering Strain: Following prolonged or repeated activations, the user is left with a dull, tingling ache along the nervous pathways of the arm and hand used to channel the conduit, alongside a dry throat from the rapid somatic chanting.

- Alchemical Crafting: Skill level 3 (required for grinding crystalline cells, stabilizing metallic pigments, and compounding mana-conductive inks).
- Jewelry and Metalsmithing: Skill level 2 (required for shaping the octagonal brass casing, cutting retaining channels, and soldering structural joints).
Crafting Steps
- Step 1: Fabricating the Octagonal Brass Casing:
- Measure, cut, and file the brass sheet into an octagonal medallion frame with a stepped inner rim designed to seat the ceramic tile.
- Solder the top suspension ring to the apex of the octagon using silver solder over the charcoal brazier.
- Using steel engraving burins, carve four internal capillary grooves on the interior face of the casing to serve as physical conduits directing mana from the wearer’s neck cord into the central tile.
- Step 2: Preparing the Ceramic Base and Ground:
- Shape and kiln-fire the kaolin clay tile to a bisque state, ensuring the surface is perfectly flat, smooth, and free of structural micro-fissures.
- Polish the face of the tile with fine abrasive stone to create a pore-free ground suitable for fine-line ink adhesion.
- Step 3: Compounding the Conductive Script Ink:
- In an agate mortar, grind the Tier 1 crystal residue into an impalpable powder, blending it thoroughly with the iron gall base and lapis pigment.
- Introduce the elemental fluid extract drop by drop, stirring continuously until the ink exhibits a consistent viscosity that holds a fine line without bleeding.
- Prepare a secondary batch containing the ground gold leaf and gum arabic for high-potency highlight runes.
- Step 4: Scribing the Sacred Geometric Matrix:
- Mount the ceramic tile on an illuminated workboard and trace the concentric layout lines using a light lead stylus.
- Using the fine reed pen, scribe the primary verses of protection, clarity, and physical endurance in the blue crystalline ink, maintaining uninterrupted line weight to ensure continuous magical conductivity throughout the knotwork.
- Fill the accent motifs, outer border rings, and power nodes using the gold leaf suspension.
- Step 5: Setting and Kiln-Firing the Inscription:
- Place the inscribed ceramic tile into the muffle furnace, bringing the temperature up slowly to fix the pigments and fuse the crystalline ink particles into the ceramic matrix.
- Allow the tile to cool slowly inside the kiln to prevent thermal shock and stress fractures in the arcane geometry.
- Step 6: Mounting the Magic Crystal and Final Assembly:
- Seat the coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal into the rear recess of the brass frame, securing it beneath the ceramic tile so that the crystal directly contacts the engraved brass conduits.
- Insert the fired ceramic tile into the front of the bezel and use a bezel roller to burnish the brass lip over the tile’s edges, locking it permanently in place.
- Thread the braided desert silk and silver wire cord through the top suspension loop.
- Step 7: Conductive Testing and Final Calibration:
- Hold the finished talisman in hand and initiate a simple one-minute attunement to test energy transfer from the user’s Mind’s Eye into the crystal core.
- Verify that channeling thought causes the blue and gold script to radiate a steady azure luminescence and produce the characteristic brass harmonic thrum, confirming full operational readiness.
Eight-Cornered Script and Great Sand Inscription
In the days before the measuring of water, when the sky had not yet decided upon its seven turnings, there was the kingdom of wide dust which men called in their rough throats the Land of Broken Reeds. In that place dwelt an elder man named Khem-Nu, whose fingers were not like the fingers of warriors, for they were stained forever with the blood of crushed stones and the juice of dark galls. It was his labor from the rising of the fiery star Helios until the sinking into the great swamp to draw lines upon dried mud and the skin of dead beasts. The people said of him, he does not speak with his mouth like a reasonable creature, but he speaks through his hand, and that which his hand saith does not blow away when the dry wind arrives from the northern rocks.
Now, Khem-Nu had seen the grand mother of the moon, Gaialilith, walking across the high ridges in the time when the stars were newly nailed to the blue dome. She had given unto all creeping things and roaring things a small stone of power within their bellies, but unto the man who wrote she gave only a basket of reed pens and said in a tongue which was like stones rolling down a dry watercourse: “He who binds the voice upon the tablet shall build a wall that the foot cannot kick over, yet he shall eat only bread dipped in salt until the great turning is finished.”
There was in that country a king whose ears were very wide and whose heart was very small. His name has been eaten by worms from the bottom of the brick, but the tablet calls him the Master of Forty Gates. This king looked upon his cattle, and he looked upon his tall jars of barley, and he became terrified in his liver because he knew that across the bitter water there were men who had teeth like dogs and iron upon their sticks, who came in flat boats to take that which was not planted by their mothers. The king called unto him his wise men, who were fat from eating sheep tail, and said unto them: “Build me a bronze spear that can kill twelve men with one throw, or I will put you all into the dry well with the scorpions.”
The wise men wept and pulled their beards, for they knew nothing of bronze except how to buy it at a high price from the sea-traders. But Khem-Nu came before the footstool of forty stones, carrying a small tile of fired earth that was neither square nor round, but possessed eight turns like the sacred water tank of the temple. Upon this tile he had scratched the likeness of eighty-eight twisting serpents whose tails were in their mouths, written in the blue juice of the crushed sky-stone and the shining dust that does not rust in the river.
Khem-Nu spoke unto the king with great difficulty, for the language of the court was full of grand words that had no grease: “Behold, O king whose crown is heavy, the stick of wood will snap when the great bull runs against it, and the bronze knife will turn its edge upon the bone of the enemy. But that which is said with the correct shape upon the white tile cannot be unsaid, because the world was made by a voice that spoke in shapes. Take this stone of eight corners and hang it upon the hair of your chest. When the dog-headed men come with their red fire, do not draw your sword with a shout, but whisper the middle line of the tile which signifies ‘The boundary is shut by decree of the Earth.’”
The king took the tile and made a great mockery with his mouth. He laughed until his belly shook like a sack of sour milk. He said: “This old scribe gives me a piece of dirt with dead bugs painted upon it, while the enemy comes with six hundred wagons and horses that eat meat.” And the king threw the charm into the dust beneath his high chair, where the palace dogs came and sniffed at the gold lines, but could not lick them off because the ink was made from the living tears of the rock.
Then came the dark day when the eclipse covered the face of the great planet VaporSphere, and the water in the canals became thick like oil. From the wild hills came the army of the raiders, whose skin was painted with ashes and whose spears were tipped with the bones of giant fishes. They broke down the outer gates of wood, they burned the storehouses where the sweet dates were kept, and they drove the soldiers of the king into the inner courtyard until their shields touched one another like the scales of a dead fish.
The king stood upon his platform, and his knees struck one another with a sound like dry gourds. He reached down into the dust where he had thrown the octagonal piece of dirt, because all his silver spears had been broken and his captains were lying in their blood without their boots. He picked up the charm, which was covered in the spit of dogs and the dirt of the floor, and he held it against his breast.
He could not read the signs, because he had spent his youth hunting wild asses and drinking sweet wine from the jar, so he called in a great howl across the courtyard: “Khem-Nu! What is the noise that must be made for this mud to work?”
Khem-Nu, who was sitting upon the stone steps mending a quill with a small iron knife, did not lift his head from his work. He answered in his slow, dusty voice: “Say the word which means ‘It is written and therefore it remains,’ and let your breath go forth with the shape of a serpent that coils about its own nest.”
The king shouted the word, but his voice was cracked with the fear of dying, so the sound was ugly like the cry of a heron in the marsh. Yet, because the ink had been mixed with the marrow of a Tier 1 crystalline thing that had lived three hundred years under the stone, the tile took the breath of the king and turned it into fire.
From the eight corners of the brass border there came forth eight lines of blue light that ran across the stones of the courtyard like living snakes. Wherever these lines touched the paving, the dust arose and formed itself into words that floated three feet from the ground. The words were as thick as beams of cedar, and they joined one another until they made an eight-sided house of blue air around the palace porch.
The raiders threw their heavy javelins against the words, but the bronze tips did not pierce the air; they struck the glowing lines and bounced backward, striking those who had thrown them through their own thighs and shoulders. A great captain of the wild men, whose chest was as wide as an ox, ran forward with a great stone hammer to smash the light. When he struck the place where the sign of the closed door was written, the hammer shattered into ten thousand grains of sand, and the force of his own strike went into his arms, turning his elbow joints backward so that he could no longer hold a weapon for the rest of his days on the earth.
The king saw this and was filled with a foolish pride. He thought in his heart: “It is my own mouth that has done this thing, because I am the king and my lungs are greater than the lungs of common men.” So he stepped forward out of the blue house of words, holding the charm high above his forehead so that all the city might look upon him and fall upon their faces.
He shouted at the retreating enemy: “Look upon me, who cannot be slain by the stick or the fire!” But because he had stepped beyond the boundary that Khem-Nu had inscribed upon the tile, and because his heart was full of emptiness and windy thoughts, the charm in his hand became as heavy as an anvil of lead. His fingers could not support the weight of the eight corners, and it slipped from his grasp, falling upon the sharp stones of the royal walk.
The ceramic face struck a flint pebble and cracked across the center, splitting the name of the earth from the name of the shield. At that very moment, the blue lines that stood in the air vanished like mist when the morning Helios touches the reed beds. A single stray arrow, shot by a boy who was running away in the far street, flew over the garden wall and entered the king between his collar-bones, and he fell down upon the broken tile, staining the gold lettering with the dark fluid of his throat.
The people of the Land of Broken Reeds ran into the palace and carried away the gold pots and the linen sheets, but Khem-Nu walked quietly through the blood and the broken spears until he came to the place where the king lay. He picked up the pieces of the octagonal charm, wiped the red wetness from the porcelain upon his woolen skirt, and said: “A stone may be mended with the gum of the acacia tree, but a man who thinks his voice is greater than the sign will always find a dart waiting for his throat.”
Khem-Nu took the pieces back to his small cell near the water wheel. He set the tile within a new ring of hammered brass, and he wound about it the silver-twisted cord from the queen’s mantle, so that whoever wore it in the years that followed would remember that the power does not reside in the loudness of the king’s shouting, but in the straightness of the scribe’s line and the stillness of the thinking mind.
Moral of the Story
The sword that is drawn with pride will perish when its metal meets a harder stone, but the word that is written with understanding endures beyond the breath of kings; he who trusts in the shape of truth shall find a shield in the day of ruin, while he who claims the glory of the script for his own vanity shall be pierced by the very wind he sought to command.
