Charm 319 of the Mirage Veil

Lore

  • In the sun-scorched badlands and shifting dunes of the Tasian and Gerzean territories, survival historically depended on the ability to evade the predatory gaze of soaring raptors and prowling beasts that claimed the arid wastes.
  • Nomadic trackers and scouting sentries discovered that by grinding desert quartz, chameleonic lizard scales, and pulverized Tier 1 magic crystalline cells into fine mineral glazes, they could capture the optical distortions of the midday heat shimmering over the sands.
  • Charm 319 was crafted during the Warming week of the month of Selnus by a desert weaver seeking to mask the movement of supply couriers navigating through contested trade routes without alerting rival state patrols.
  • Blessed over smoldering juniper braziers, the charm bends the ambient rays of the star Helios, blending the wearer’s physical outline into the immediate terrain and dampening the acoustic rustle of travel gear.
  • The item has long been favored by outriders and wilderness scouts who require passive concealment while conducting surveillance along rocky cliffs and brush-covered plains.

Description

  • The charm takes the form of a teardrop-shaped bronze medallion framed by filigree that mimics curling desert thorny vines, suspended from a braided strip of supple lizard-hide cord.
  • Inset at the center is a pale, polished ceramic cabochon with a pearlescent, sand-colored surface inscribed with looping geometric verses and wave patterns drawn in an iridescent, color-shifting mineral ink.
  • When viewed under direct sunlight, the colors across the inscribed tile subtly shift between dusty ochre, faded sage, and pale slate gray to match whatever background is immediately behind it.
  • The medallion feels cool and smooth to the touch, constantly venting a faint, imperceptible dry draft that carries the earthy scent of sun-baked shale and pulverized dry clay.
  • When its active magic is triggered, a shimmering, translucent heat-haze ripples outward from the bronze casing, momentarily blurring the physical silhouette of the avatar wearing it.

    • Damage: Base item damage of 1d6 radiant/force damage + 1d4 Tier 1 die. If cast silently, base damage is reduced by 25%. If the target’s true name is known and vocalized during somatic execution, total damage is doubled. Targets struck must also succeed on an opposed save or suffer the Dazed condition for 1 round.
  • Veil of the Bedouin Camp (Ritual Chant):
    • Action Cost: 10 minutes of uninterrupted ritual chanting and physical tracing of the perimeter using sand or crushed stone.
    • Casting Type: Ritual (Chanting sacred concealment verses for greater than 6 seconds; increases spell potency by up to 25%).
    • Effect: Conceals a stationary area up to a 20-foot radius (such as a campsite, wagon, or hideout). To observers standing more than 30 feet away, the warded area seamlessly mirrors the surrounding empty terrain. Hostile creatures attempting to spot the camp must beat an opposed DC check rolled against the caster’s skill total to perceive the hidden boundary.

Roleplay Applications in Environmental Combat: Offensive and Defensive Execution

Arid Deserts, Sun-Baked Badlands, and Shifting Dune Seas

  • Defensive Roleplay Operations:
    • Navigating the scorching sand wastes of the Tasian or Gerzean regions exposes an avatar to predatory raptors overhead and roving bands of raiders across wide, coverless terrain.
    • When caught in an open basin with nowhere to take natural cover, the avatar grasps the bronze teardrop medallion and speaks the brief somatic trigger phrase, activating Refractive Blur.
    • The avatar roleplays the heat shimmer intensifying around their physical form as the air violently bends incoming light from the star Helios, causing their outline to dissolve into a hazy mirage.
    • Archers and flying monstrosities targeting the avatar struggle to track their true physical coordinates, suffering disadvantage on attack rolls while kinetic projectiles strike empty sand where the mirage appeared to be.
    • During nighttime rests or desert sandstorms, the avatar gathers loose dune sand and completes the Veil of the Bedouin Camp, tracing a circular boundary while reciting the ten-minute ritual litany.
    • The encampment’s visual footprint vanishes into the horizon, projecting a seamless image of undisturbed sand dunes to distant predators and rival caravans traversing the wastes.
  • Offensive Roleplay Operations:
    • When stalking a hostile patrol or cornering an elusive target in rocky desert gullies, the avatar relies on the passive Adaptive Environmental Blending and Acoustic Dampening Field.
    • The pearlescent ceramic cabochon shifts from pale sand to dusty ochre to match the canyon walls, while gear straps and metal buckles remain entirely silent over shifting gravel.
    • Closing within thirty feet of a sentinel, the avatar initiates Concealing Flash of the Dunes through a swift somatic flourish.
    • A blinding flare of focused radiant light and concussive heat discharges from the bronze frame, striking the target with base force damage and tier damage.
    • If the avatar has discerned the target’s true name through earlier scouting with the Mind’s Eye, whispering the name into the flash causes the burst to detonate with doubled force, leaving the foe reeling under the Dazed condition as allies close in for the finish.

Dense Island Jungles, Mossy Rainforests, and Boggy Wetlands

  • Defensive Roleplay Operations:
    • In the dense undergrowth and tangled roots of island jungles where aggressive flora and feral beasts lie in wait, the charm adapts its optical matrix to dappled canopy shadows and rich foliage.
    • When a predatory beast lunges from the canopy ferns, the avatar’s passive Aegis of the Mirage misdirects the initial pounce, causing sharp claws and snapping jaws to strike the kinetic refractive field instead of vital flesh.
    • If ambushed by multiple encroaching monsters, the avatar triggers Refractive Blur to create multiple shifting optical doubles amidst the thick ferns, using the momentary disorientation of the beasts to retreat up into the low branches of a mangrove tree.
    • When setting up an observation hide near a hostile ruins site, the avatar uses damp bog soil to mark a twenty-foot threshold with the Veil of the Bedouin Camp, masking their party’s scent, heat signature, and visual outline from wandering patrols.
  • Offensive Roleplay Operations:
    • Moving through wet leaf litter and brittle twigs normally produces distinct snapping sounds that alert sensitive jungle predators; the charm’s Acoustic Dampening Field completely absorbs these vibrations.
    • The avatar glides soundlessly through the brush, positioning themselves on high ground directly overlooking an enemy encampment.
    • Spotting the lead brute, the avatar executes a Silent Concealing Flash of the Dunes, foregoing vocal components to prevent alerting the rest of the camp.
    • A silent, concentrated beam of light and force strikes the target with instantaneous precision, taking a slight twenty-five percent damage reduction in exchange for maintaining absolute surprise against the remaining foes.

Crowded Metropolises, Stone Courtyards, and Market Alleys

  • Defensive Roleplay Operations:
    • Operating within bustling capital cities or walled state hubs requires evading municipal tax collectors, corrupt city watchmen, or competing guild assassins.
    • When cornered in a dead-end stone alleyway by city enforcers, the avatar quickly invokes Refractive Blur, causing their silhouette to split and waver against the gray masonry walls.
    • As guards swing batons or loose crossbow bolts, their attacks misjudge the avatar’s position, allowing the avatar to slip past the frontline and scale an adjacent drainpipe.
    • If the avatar needs to safeguard an urban safehouse or illicit printing press from municipal raids, they perform the Veil of the Bedouin Camp across the apartment entrance using crushed brick dust, ensuring that inspectors passing through the corridor perceive only an unremarkable, solid brick wall.
  • Offensive Roleplay Operations:
    • In crowded market squares where initiating an obvious magical duel would cause widespread panic and royal guard intervention, the avatar leverages subtle offensive magic.
    • By channeling conscious intent through the teardrop medallion, the avatar targets an enemy spy attempting to blend into a crowd within thirty feet.
    • The avatar speaks the command word under their breath in a tight somatic gesture, releasing Concealing Flash of the Dunes disguised as an ambient solar glare reflecting off a merchant’s polished brass platter.
    • The blast strikes the operative with concussive force, staggering them into a food stall and leaving them dazed, enabling the avatar to close the distance and apprehend them without drawing the attention of the wider populace.

Subterranean Fungi Forests, Deep Caverns, and Ancient Crypts

  • Defensive Roleplay Operations:
    • Deep within dark subterranean biospheres where light is scarce and creatures rely on diverse sight spectra, the charm alters its frequencies to deceive infrared darkvision and true sight.
    • The ceramic cabochon adjusts its thermal output, cooling down to match the damp, cold limestone of cavern walls to foil heat-tracking predators.
    • When attacked by burrowing monstrosities, the charm’s passive kinetic ward cushions the impact of falling stalactites and concussive ground vibrations.
    • When entering a hostile cavern chamber, the avatar activates Refractive Blur, scattering what little ambient bioluminescence exists to make their moving frame appear as an incoherent shadow, forcing attackers to miscalculate their strikes.
  • Offensive Roleplay Operations:
    • Navigating pitch-black tunnels requires striking hard and fast before monsters with tremorsense can pinpoint an avatar’s stance.
    • The avatar stalks silently along cavern ledges, utilizing the charm’s acoustic dampening to avoid echoing footsteps against hollow stone floors.
    • Locking onto a cave-dwelling beast, the avatar unleashes a full somatic Concealing Flash of the Dunes, illuminating the pitch-black cavern with a brilliant radiant burst that exploits the creature’s light sensitivity.
    • The dazzling force blast inflicts full base and tier damage, simultaneously blinding and disorienting the creature, allowing party members to strike while the enemy is completely incapacitated.

Perception of Activation:

Five-Sense Perceptions

  • Visual Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: When the user initiates the activation via thought, chant, or somatic touch, the pale sand-colored ceramic tile immediately erupts in a low, pulsating amber and azure light. The surrounding air warps into a visible, rippling heat-haze that expands outward, making the user’s own hands, weapons, and limbs appear semi-translucent, wavering, and slightly displaced by several inches from their true physical position.
    • Observer’s Perspective: An onlooker sees the teardrop-shaped bronze medallion flash with a sudden, glassy sheen. Instantly, the avatar’s sharp physical contours dissolve into a shimmering mirage, causing their body to blur, break into multiple faint optical afterimages, and blend into the ambient color spectrum of the background terrain.
  • Auditory Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: The user hears a subtle, rushing sound similar to dry desert winds blowing through an empty canyon, followed by the soft, granular hiss of pouring sand. Immediately afterward, all local bodily acoustic feedback—such as the clinking of armor plates, the rustle of clothing, and footfalls—is muffled into near-total silence.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers hear a faint, high-pitched vibrational hum lasting less than a second, reminiscent of a glass crystal singing when rubbed, before all ambient movement sounds from the avatar abruptly fade away.
  • Olfactory Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: A sudden, dry breeze fills the user’s nostrils with the sharp scent of sun-baked clay, crushed shale, desert sagebrush, and a hint of warm, dry ozone.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within five to ten feet of the charm detects a momentary whiff of dry, hot dust and desert juniper, even if standing in a damp swamp, dense jungle, or stone city alleyway.
  • Tactile Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: The bronze filigree cools down rapidly against the wearer’s skin, followed by a gentle, tingling electrostatic prickle that spreads across the surface of the avatar’s torso, limbs, and extremities as the refractive optical field settles into place.
    • Observer’s Perspective: An attacker attempting to make physical contact or swing a weapon through the warded space feels a slippery, air-cushioned resistance, as if striking through a pocket of dense, pressurized thermal draft rather than solid matter.
  • Gustatory Perception:
    • User’s Perspective: The user experiences a dry, chalky taste on the back of the tongue, akin to inhaling fine, mineral-rich desert dust.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Nearby individuals catch a faint, dry mineral tang in the air during the discharge of offensive light pulses.

Extra-Sensory Perceptions

  • Mind’s Eye Manifestation:
    • User’s Perspective: The user’s Mind’s Eye displays a momentary diagnostic readout detailing the charm’s active state, confirming the application of the Blurred condition, the remaining duration of the refractive field, and an enhanced spatial mesh highlighting optimal blind spots and shadow corridors in the surrounding environment.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers utilizing their own Mind’s Eye perceive the avatar’s target coordinates fluctuating erratically, with the avatar’s tactical data and physical outline becoming obscured or displaying inaccurate proximity vectors.
  • Soul Sight and Arcane Spectrum:
    • User’s Perspective: Through soul sight, the user observes their personal mana weave flowing steadily through the bronze conduits and into the Tier 1 magic crystal, which scatters the energy into a pale, shifting golden-green aura that dampens their spiritual presence.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Individuals viewing the avatar through soul sight or true sight see their spiritual signature fragment into a diffuse, hazy halo of low-intensity ultraviolet light, masking their distinct power tier and making them appear as background environmental mana.
  • Tremorsense and Kinetic Feedback:
    • User’s Perspective: The user feels a dampening of kinetic shock through the soles of their feet, sensing how the charm absorbs and disperses ground vibrations before they can transmit through stone or soil.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Burrowing creatures or subterranean beasts utilizing tremorsense perceive the avatar’s footfalls as diffuse, indistinct murmurs rather than rhythmic, solid footsteps, significantly complicating positional targeting.
  • Spatial and Thermal Detection:
    • User’s Perspective: The user perceives an artificial temperature barrier enveloping their body, balancing their thermal output to match the ambient temperature of the local atmosphere.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Beings that track targets via thermal vision or darkvision infrared see the avatar’s distinct body heat signature dissolve into the baseline thermal background of the room or landscape.

Positive and Negative Perceptions

  • Positives:
    • Tactical Evasion: The dramatic visual distortion and acoustic suppression provide an immediate sense of elusive safety, drastically reducing the precision of incoming attacks and allowing swift disengagement from dangerous combat situations.
    • Environmental Synchronization: The seamless blending of colors and suppression of physical sound give the avatar complete confidence when maneuvering through high-risk sentry posts or monster-infested wilderness.
    • Disorienting Surprise: The sudden eruption of bright refractive energy during offensive discharges leaves foes momentarily stunned and visually disoriented, providing an advantageous opening for coordinated strikes.
  • Negatives:
    • Visual Edge Distortions: The persistent heat-haze around the user’s field of view can make reading small text, executing delicate manual lockpicking, or judging fine, millimeter-level distances slightly disorienting while the active blur is maintained.
    • Aromatic Trail in Clean Air: In sealed, moisture-heavy environments (such as underwater habitats or sterile laboratory chambers), the sudden, unmistakable scent of baked desert shale and dry dust can serve as a secondary tell for highly perceptive trackers.
    • Thermal Tingling Sensation: Extended use of the active refractive field leaves the avatar’s skin feeling dry, tight, and prickling with residual static electricity for several minutes after the magical effect expires.

Crafting Recipe: Forging of the Mirage Veil Talisman

Materials Needed

  • Base Housing and Mounting:
    • 0.5 lbs of refined bronze alloy sheet, hammered and chased into a teardrop-shaped bezel frame with an integrated top suspension eyelet.
    • 6 inches of fine bronze wire for twisting delicate thorny vine filigree along the outer perimeter.
    • One teardrop-shaped bisqued ceramic cabochon (approximately 2 inches long by 1.5 inches wide), prepared from fine desert kaolin clay blended with pulverized quartz dust.
    • 2.5 feet of supple, braided desert lizard-hide cord for the neck suspension strap.

  • Kiln and Firing Apparatus:
    • Enclosed muffle furnace or portable ceramic kiln capable of reaching stable glaze-firing temperatures.
    • Hardwood tongs and heat-resistant ceramic firing stilts.

Skill Requirements

  • Alchemical Crafting: Skill level 4 (essential for compounding the volatile color-shifting ink, neutralizing crystalline residues, and balancing optical mineral binders).
  • Jewelry and Metalsmithing: Skill level 3 (required for cutting the teardrop bezel, twisting intricate thorny filigree, and executing clean solder joins without melting delicate bronze wire).
  • Calligraphy and Inscription: Skill level 3 (necessary for painting the unbroken geometric wave patterns and sacred concealment scripts with uniform line weight and energy flow).

Crafting Steps

  • Step 1: Fabricating the Teardrop Bronze Frame:
    • Measure, trace, and cut the base teardrop shape from the bronze sheet using the jeweler’s saw, filing the inner edges smooth to create a secure recess for the ceramic cabochon.
    • Twist the fine bronze wire into interlocking loops resembling creeping desert thorny vines, soldering them cleanly along the outer rim of the bezel using silver solder and the blowpipe.
    • Solder the top suspension eyelet firmly to the apex of the teardrop, ensuring the loop is aligned with the center axis of the medallion.
    • Chisel shallow capillary conduits into the interior floor of the bezel to route mana from the suspension cord directly into the central mounting cavity.
  • Step 2: Preparing and Bisque-Firing the Cabochon:
    • Hand-press fine desert kaolin clay mixed with quartz dust into a smooth, convex teardrop mold, ensuring a uniform thickness across the piece.
    • Fire the shaped clay in the kiln to a bisque state, producing a smooth, pale, sand-colored ground free of pinholes, cracks, or warping.
    • Lightly abrade the face with fine pumice stone to provide a clean, receptive surface for the alchemical pigments.
  • Step 3: Compounding the Refractive Mineral Ink:
    • In the agate mortar, grind the Tier 1 magic crystal residue, crushed mica, and chameleonic scale powder into an ultra-fine powder.
    • Blend the dry mixture with the iron oxide base, introducing the acacia sap binder and elemental air extract drop by drop until the ink achieves an even, fluid viscosity that reflects ambient light.
  • Step 4: Painting the Sacred Concealment Runes:
    • Using the finest sable-hair brush, paint concentric wave lines and interlocking desert glyphs across the surface of the ceramic cabochon.
    • Maintain continuous, unbroken brushstrokes along the outer edges to create an uninterrupted circuit for ambient light manipulation and sound suppression.
    • Apply the silver quartz flux over the wet ink as a protective glaze coat to seal the conductive channels.
  • Step 5: Glaze Firing and Thermal Cooling:
    • Place the painted cabochon on ceramic stilts inside the muffle furnace, bringing the heat up slowly to vitrify the glaze and fuse the crystalline ink particles into the ceramic matrix.
    • Allow the kiln to cool gradually to room temperature over several hours to eliminate internal thermal stresses that could cause optical distortion fractures.
  • Step 6: Core Mounting and Final Setting:
    • Place the coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal into the rear compartment of the bronze casing, aligning its facets with the engraved mana channels.
    • Seat the fired ceramic cabochon over the crystal, ensuring direct contact between the gemstone core and the undersurface of the tile.
    • Carefully burnish the bronze bezel lip over the perimeter of the cabochon using the agate setting tool, securing the insert firmly in place.
    • Thread the braided lizard-hide cord through the top eyelet and knot the ends securely.
  • Step 7: Arcane Attunement and Field Testing:
    • Hold the finished charm in both hands and perform a simple one-minute attunement ritual, channeling conscious thought into the medallion.
    • Confirm proper functionality by observing the ceramic tile shift in hue to match the background, verifying the release of a subtle heat-haze mirage and the immediate suppression of local gear noise.

Unseen Walker and King of Many Horns

In the first countings of water, when the sky had not yet seven names and the ground was soft like wet flour, there lived in the dry rocks of the southern ditch a hunter of great thirst whose name was written as Tariq-of-the-Lizard. He was not a man of great meat or heavy bones; his legs were like the dried sticks of the thorn bush, and his chest was small like a basket for onions. Yet he possessed eyes that could see the track of a worm upon the hot stone, and his ears knew when the desert fox turned its head three ridges away.

In those years, the beasts of the dry waste were not small things that run into holes. They had many heads and walked upon feet of iron, and they ate the red meat of men as a child eats figs. Chief among these was the Great Gilded Devourer, a beast that possessed fourteen horns upon its brow and scales as thick as five shields of hide. When this monster walked across the gravel, the earth made a groaning noise, and the people of the tents would crawl into deep pits, leaving behind their fat sheep and their barley bread so that the beast might fill its belly and sleep without breaking the bones of their children.

Tariq saw his father eaten by the horned thing, and he saw his sister carried away in the great teeth that were like bronze sickles. His liver was burned with fire, but he knew that a spear of wood would bend upon the hide of the beast, and an arrow of reed would shatter like dried grass. So he went up into the high red mountain where the wind speaks without a tongue, and he lay upon the burning stones until the sun star Helios had gone down four times into the great salt marsh.

While he lay in the hot dust, the Earth Mother Gaialilith walked over the red ridges. Her feet made no track in the sand, and around her neck hung many small things that shone with the light of the void. She looked upon Tariq, whose mouth was split with the dry sickness, and she spoke in words that were like the scraping of a pot: “Why do you lie upon the stone where no grass grows, O skin of dust? The horned bull of the wastes will find you and make your bones into yellow meal.”

Tariq made an answer with his dry throat, though the words were full of grit: “I seek not to break the horn of the bull with my hand, for my hand is thin. I seek to be as the breath of the stone, which the beast cannot bite, and as the shadow of the noon heat, which the sharp eye cannot count.”

The grand mother of the moon laughed with a sound like rain falling upon dry clay. She reached down into the red shale and took up a lump of clay that had been baked by three hundred summers of fire. She spat upon the clay, and from the skin of her neck she plucked a scale of the sand-crawler that changes its skin from the color of dead salt to the color of wet moss. She gave these into his hand along with a small pebble of Tier 1 power that had grown in the belly of a mountain viper.

She said unto him in the ancient speech that has no vowels: “Shape this earth into the likeness of a falling water drop. Scratch upon its belly the sign of the rippling wind and the word that means ‘I am nowhere though my feet are here.’ When you place this thing upon the skin of your breast and whisper the speech of the dune, the eye that seeks you shall look through your ribs and see only the dry stone behind you. But hear this, O creature of little meat: the charm hides only that which is still and patient. If your heart swells with the shouting of pride, the heat-haze will break, and the teeth of the bull shall find your marrow.”

Tariq took the clay and the scale and the stone of blue marrow. He sat in his cave for seven turnings of the moon, rubbing the earth with the oil of bitter desert nuts until it was smooth like the shell of a bird’s egg. He took a thorn of the acacia and inscribed seventy-seven lines of twisting wave signs, mixing the powdered scale with the black juice of the gall tree. When he had bound the teardrop tile in a hoop of hammered bronze and hung it upon a braided strip of lizard-skin, the tile began to breathe a cold air, and the face of the stone turned the color of the granite ledge upon which he sat.

Now the king of that country, who dwelt in a fortress made of sun-dried bricks, heard that Tariq possessed a piece of mud that could make a man vanish like smoke. The king was a man of great grease, whose ears were always filled with the sweet words of his butter-eaters. He sent four soldiers with iron hooks to drag Tariq before the high seat of mud.

The king said: “Give unto me this drop of bronze, for I am the master of the forty cisterns, and it is proper that I should walk into the tents of my enemies while they sleep and take away their silver pots without the labor of war.”

Tariq bowed his face to the dirt floor and answered: “O king whose cattle are many, this stone was not made for the taking of pots. It was made for the man who walks softly, that he may pass by the teeth of the great devourer without the spilling of water.”

The king took the charm with a greedy hand and struck Tariq across the neck with his wooden stick, throwing him into the outer ditch where the dogs eat the heads of dead birds. The king hung the bronze teardrop upon his fat throat, and he called unto his captains: “Bring out my red chariot and my thirty horses! I will go forth into the waste where the Great Devourer sleeps, and I will strike it through the eye while it sees me not, and all the island countries will say that the master of forty cisterns is greater than the gods.”

The king rode out into the valley of white bones where the monster lay upon a bed of hot gravel. The beast smelled the fat of the horses and raised its fourteen horns, and its roar shook the dust from the cliffs so that the soldiers of the king turned their wagons and fled back to the city gates, leaving the king alone in the burning noon.

The king touched the teardrop charm and spoke the word of the dune, and straightway the air around his chariot began to boil and ripple like the water in a soup cauldron. His red tunic and his gold bracelets became the color of the yellow limestone, and his chariot wheels made no rattle upon the flint stones. The great horned beast stood upon its iron feet, sniffing the wind, but its red eyes could see nothing save the empty waste and the dry heat rising from the gravel.

The king drove his chariot close unto the flank of the sleeping monster, so close that the hot steam from the creature’s nostrils blew upon his face. He drew his great bronze broadsword, and instead of thrusting the point quickly and in silence into the soft fold of the beast’s armpit, he stood high upon the wicker rail of his chariot. He threw back his head and shouted with a terrible bellow: “Behold me, O beast! I am the master of the cisterns, who is invisible like the night wind, and now I will have your teeth for my footstool!”

At the very instant the king’s voice broke the stillness of the desert, the vanity of his heart rushed into the bronze conduits of the charm. The fine lizard cord snapped under the swelling of his proud neck, and the teardrop talisman fell down among the spinning spokes of the chariot wheel. The bronze filigree was crushed, and the ceramic tile was ground into ten thousand grains of gray sand against the flint rock.

The rippling mirage vanished like the popping of a soap bubble. The king stood bare and bright in his scarlet wool, shining under the full glare of the star Helios directly before the open jaws of the monster. The Gilded Devourer did not roar; it simply reached down with its fourteen horns and tossed the chariot into the air, and before the king could reach the stone ground, the great teeth closed upon his middle, and his pride was ended in a single swallow.

Three days later, when the beast had wandered into the high hills to digest the chariot iron, Tariq-of-the-Lizard walked out into the valley of bones. He made no sound, and his thin frame blended with the yellow dust of the rocks. He found the crushed rim of the bronze teardrop and the fragments of the ceramic cabochon scattered among the dry gravel.

Tariq gathered the pieces into the fold of his skirt and carried them back to his cave in the red mountain. He mixed new clay with the sap of the thorny bush, and he re-inscribed the seventy-seven wave signs with a hand that did not shake. He set the restored tile within a fresh casing of beaten bronze, winding about it the braided lizard hide that had been washed in the clean rain. And he wore it beneath his wool tunic, unseen by men, walking through the shadows of the badlands in peace until the day his own soul was called back into the sea of the great turning.

Moral of the Story

He who seeks the veil of silence must carry silence within his own spirit; the art of unseen movement is a shield for the humble who seek to preserve life, but when worn as a cloak for vanity and boasting, the mirage shatters, and the mouth that shouts its own glory will surely feed the jaws of the destroyer.
