Charm 512 of the Cleavers Tether

Lore

  • In the bustling slaughterhouses, abattoir alleys, and meat markets across Saṃsāra, the work of the butcher is viewed not merely as labor, but as a solemn discipline of life, marrow, and clean severance.
  • Crafted by master flesh-carvers and sanctified with prayers to the ancient deities of the herd, humane harvest, and nourishment, these charms ensure that no meat spoils, no cut is wasted, and the worker remains shielded from the frenzy of wild beasts and tainted viscera.
  • Passed down from veteran carcass-dressers to their apprentices, the talisman carries the enduring weight of iron cleavers, salt-cured hides, and bone-deep anatomical precision.
  • Wearing the charm instills an instinctive, calculating understanding of joint articulation, sinew tension, and vital seams, guiding the bearer to carve through dense muscle and gristle with effortless, unwavering efficiency.

Description

  • A heavy, rectangular pendant forged from cold-hammered wrought iron and bone-tempered pig-iron, shaped like a miniature flensing cleaver.
  • Suspended from a braided cord of waxed split-hide leather and reinforced animal sinew, counterbalanced by a polished bovine knuckle-bone charm at the back of the neck.
  • The blade of the charm is etched with micro-inscribed slaughterhouse prayers and preservation runes, framing a central bloodstone cabochon that pulses with a deep, ember-red glow whenever raw meat, severed bone, or vital anatomical weak points are near.

Tactical Roleplay and Abattoir Arts: Defense and Offense of the Cleaver’s Tether

  • Livestock Stockyards, Slaughter Plazas, and Packing Houses
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • When an enraged, ungelded bull or rampaging draft beast breaks its tether in the killing chute, the bearer steps forward with calm, steady footing. Activating Sinew & Seam Scry, they look through the bloodstone cabochon to pinpoint the animal’s exact cervical vertebra seam. Using Meat-Hook Stride Vector to close the distance instantly, they deliver a precise, humane stun or severance blow before panic spreads to the crowd.
      • Facing a corrupt slaughterhouse foreman or loan-shark enforcer in a dark processing stall, the butcher snaps the knuckle-bone counterweight to loose a Blinding Bone-Dust Flare. The cloud of stinging bone-meal, brine, and flash-grit completely blinds the thugs, allowing the butcher to step into close quarters and neutralize them with well-placed, blunt joint strikes.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • When a massive hanging carcass hook slips from its ceiling rail, swinging toward the bearer’s chest like an iron pendulum, the Slaughterer’s Iron Apron Ward absorbs the brutal momentum, deflecting the heavy iron and preventing crushed ribs.
      • If a panicked cow lashes out with a rear hoof kick, the wearer’s Anatomical Insight allows them to anticipate the muscle twitch and brace effortlessly, turning what would be a crippling fracture into a manageable glancing blow.
  • Pungent Tannery Vats, Offal Channels, and Under-Bazaars
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Pursuing an alley cutpurse through slippery, refuse-filled gutters, the bearer utilizes Meat-Hook Stride Vector to maintain balanced, accelerated momentum across rain-slick cobblestones and gore-stained chutes, cutting off the thief’s escape at an iron drainage grate.
      • When confronting monstrous scavengers nesting beneath the butchery ditches (such as giant rats or carrion drakes), the bearer scries their biological frames to identify rotted muscle segments and internal tumorous weaknesses, guiding allies where to strike for maximum lethal impact.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • While working among decomposing carcasses or fighting carrion beasts, an accidental slice from a gore-encrusted hook exposes the butcher to lethal blood-rot and flesh-eating fever. Pressing the flat iron cleaver to the skin, they trigger Cauterizing Flesh-Weave, which immediately sterilizes the wound, purges the rot-spores, and knits the laceration shut without leaving a festering scar.
      • In tight, foul-smelling drainage tunnels where weapon swings are constricted, the warding kinetic barrier protects the bearer’s flanks from ambushing trench-vermin.
  • Frontier Wilderness, Hunting Camps, and Monster Lairs
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Tracking a dangerous predatory beast through dense brush, Anatomical Insight & Marrow Scent enables the hunter to read the faint scent of drying animal marrow and broken bone-marrow trails that mundane trackers miss entirely.
      • When battling an armored creature (such as a chitinous beetle, dire boar, or scale-hide lizard), the bearer peers through the bloodstone to highlight the unarmored soft joints beneath the carapaces, shouting target locations to archers and spearmen to bypass the monster’s natural armor.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • If a cornered predator springs from an embankment, claws outstretched toward the hunter’s throat, the butcher releases the Blinding Bone-Dust Flare. The stinging cloud drives into the beast’s hyper-sensitive eyes and nostrils, sending it crashing into the brush disoriented and giving the party time to regroup.
      • When bitten by a venomous viper or forest horror, the Cauterizing Flesh-Weave immediately transmutes the injected necrotoxin into sterile saline while closing the puncture wounds before poison can reach the heart.
  • Subterranean Crypts, Ghoul Nests, and Sepulchral Ruins
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Against animate skeletal constructs or stitching abominations, the talisman acts as the ultimate anatomical exploit. Sinew & Seam Scry exposes the singular tendon stitch or brittle binding-pin holding the foul construct together, allowing the bearer to dismantle the horror with a single, surgical cleaver strike.
      • When charging toward an undead abomination that has incapacitated an ally, Meat-Hook Stride Vector propels the bearer forward with surging speed to intercept the creature before it can feast.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • If scratched by the paralyzing claws of a tomb ghoul, the butcher instantly channels the amulet’s passive resilience to resist paralytic toxins, following up with the Cauterizing Flesh-Weave to purge the foul necrotic taint from their circulatory system.
      • The heavy iron cleaver pendant vibrates against the chest in the presence of tainted meat or unnatural carrion, warning the party of hidden ambushers lurking among pile of ancient bones.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective: The Five Physical Senses
    • Sight: A deep, smoldering ember-red luminescence ignites within the central bloodstone cabochon, casting a ruddy glow across the iron blade and illuminating the etched slaughterhouse runes in fiery crimson.
    • Sound: A heavy, resonant thud reverberates through the chest cavity—identical to the clean, decisive chop of a heavy cleaver striking a maple butcher’s block—followed by the faint sizzle of searing gristle.
    • Smell: A sharp, primal scent of iron-rich blood, coarse sea salt, cured leather, woodsmoke, and split bone marrow fills the sinuses.
    • Taste: A distinct, coppery tang settles on the back of the tongue, accompanied by a dry, salty sensation like curing brine.
    • Touch: A sudden surge of dense, pulsing heat radiates from the wrought-iron pendant into the sternum, steadying the grip, anchoring footwork, and making the hands feel extraordinarily heavy, sure, and numb to cold.
  • User’s Perspective: Extra-Sensory Perceptions
    • Anatomical Seam Sight: The bearer intuitively perceives the biological layout of nearby living creatures and carcasses, visualizing skeletons, muscle bundles, and circulatory pathways as glowing crimson fault lines ready to be separated.
    • Carcass & Spoilage Sense: The mind registers an innate awareness of flesh viability, instantly detecting hidden parasites, rot-spores, internal tumors, and the exact freshness or decay rate of organic matter within range.
    • Conduit Focus Core: In the Mind’s Eye, the embedded Tier 1 raw conduit crystal fragment burns like a dark red coal of primal harvesting mana, channeling steady kinetic reinforcement into the iron blade.
  • Observer’s Perspective: The Five Physical Senses
    • Sight: Onlookers see the miniature iron cleaver flare with an ominous, blood-red aura, with wisps of crimson heat haze rising from the bloodstone as the wearer’s posture drops into a grounded, predatory stance.
    • Sound: Nearby creatures hear a low, dull thump like a butcher’s mallet hitting raw beef, accompanied by the subtle clatter of the knuckle-bone counterweight.
    • Smell: Observers catch a sudden, pungent draft of sea salt, dry bone ash, and animal hide in the ambient air.
    • Taste: Those standing within close melee reach experience a faint, dry metallic taste on their lips.
    • Touch: A localized wave of heavy, humid warmth washes over those nearby, carrying the oppressive, thick atmosphere of a working abattoir.
  • Observer’s Perspective: Extra-Sensory Perceptions
    • Primal Herd Dread: Beasts, livestock, and faint-hearted combatants feel an instinctual chill of being sized up as livestock or game, triggering a subtle urge to recoil or flee.
    • Mind’s Eye Stat Projection: Arcane scrying reveals the item’s Tier 1 Common classification, its active +1 Armor Check kinetic flesh-ward, and faint transmutation/necromantic preservation matrices.
  • Positives of Activation
    • Unleashes a 15-foot cone of stinging bone-meal ash, salt brine, and crimson flash-grit that deals 1d4 + 1 piercing damage and blinds foes to create an opening or control a crowded melee.
    • Outlines the internal anatomy, joint vulnerabilities, fractures, and organ ailments of creatures, beasts, and meat carcasses within 500 feet for 10 minutes.
    • Instantly binds torn flesh, closes active Bleeding lacerations, and purges biological poisons, venom, parasites, and rot-spores.
    • Provides a constant +1 Armor Check kinetic ward, gives +1 to Initiative and Survival/Medicine checks, and grants a 5-foot speed burst when closing in on bleeding prey or wounded allies.
  • Negatives of Activation
    • The unmistakable sound of chopping iron and the bright crimson flash make stealth or subtle usage nearly impossible in dark or quiet surroundings.
    • The potent abattoir scent of iron, brine, and marrow can agitate nearby predatory beasts or guard hounds, alerting them to the user’s presence.
    • Expending all 3 daily charges stresses the bloodstone setting, carrying a 5% chance of fracturing the mounting until repaired by a blacksmith or jeweler.
    • The visceral, bloody aura and primal slaughterhouse presence can cause civilized non-combatants, nobles, or urban merchants to react with unease or hostility during social interactions.

Crafting Recipe: Cleaver’s Tether Amulet

  • Materials Needed
    • 1 Tier 1 Raw Conduit Magic Crystal fragment (harvested from a beast-graveyard, abattoir ley-nexus, or sacrificial threshold).
    • 1 polished oval Bloodstone cabochon (deep forest green matrix laced with vivid crimson jasper inclusions).
    • 0.5 pounds of refined Wrought Iron and bone-tempered pig-iron billet.
    • 1 carved and polished Bovine Knuckle-Bone (boiled in salt-lye and bleached).
    • 3 feet of braided cord made from waxed split-hide leather and dried beast sinew.
    • 1 dram of animal marrow oil mixed with coarse curing salt and powdered iron shavings.
    • 1 strip of emery cloth and leather buffing strop.
  • Tools Required
    • 1 Blacksmith’s Forge, Anvil, Cross-Peen Hammer, and Hot Chisels.
    • 1 Bench Vise, Hand Files, and Precision Graver Needles.
    • 1 Lapidary Bezel Setting Punch and Burnisher.
    • 1 Bone-Drill and Sinew-Braiding Awl.
    • 1 Quenching Trough filled with cold salt brine and sheep tallow.
    • 1 Harvesting-Resonance Tuning Fork (calibrated to the resonant pitch of iron cleavers on hardwood).
  • Skill Requirements
    • Blacksmithing / Metalworking: Level 2 or higher (required to forge-weld pig-iron, shape the miniature cleaver profile, and temper the cutting bevel).
    • Leatherworking / Bone Carving: Level 1 or higher (needed to dress the knuckle-bone counterweight and braid the sinew-reinforced hide cord).
    • Transmutation / Vitality Weaving: Level 1 or higher (necessary to bind the anatomical scrying matrices and channel the flesh-knitting ward).
  • Crafting Steps
    • Step 1: Forging the Miniature Iron Cleaver
      • Heat the wrought iron and pig-iron billet to cherry-red heat in the forge, hammering it into a flat, rectangular flensing cleaver blank.
      • Forge the top suspension eyelet and punch a lower drainage hole in the corner of the blade.
      • Using hot chisels and fine hand files, engrave ancient slaughterhouse prayers, preservation runes, and joint-severance glyphs across both faces of the iron blade.
      • Forge a central oval bezel recess into the midpoint of the blade to house the bloodstone cabochon.
      • Heat the blade to non-magnetic critical temperature and quench it in the salt brine and tallow trough to harden the iron edge.
  • Step 2: Fitting the Conduit Core and Bloodstone Cabochon
    • Mill a shallow channel in the base of the central bezel cavity.
    • Seat the Tier 1 raw conduit crystal fragment securely into the bottom of the recess, bedding it in a drop of bone marrow oil and iron powder flux.
    • Place the polished bloodstone cabochon over the conduit crystal.
    • Use the bezel punch and burnisher to roll the iron lip tightly over the bloodstone’s perimeter, locking the gem firmly in place without fracturing the stone.
  • Step 3: Preparing the Counterweight and Braided Cord
    • Drill a clean through-hole across the central axis of the boiled bovine knuckle-bone.
    • Polish the knuckle-bone to a smooth, matte finish using emery cloth and tallow paste.
    • Wax the split-hide leather strips and dried beast sinews, then tightly braid them into a three-ply cord.
    • Loop the braided cord through the cleaver’s upper suspension hole and attach the knuckle-bone counterweight to the opposite end, securing both with wrapped sinew whipping knots.
  • Step 4: Abattoir Attunement and Anatomical Calibration
    • Bring the assembled amulet to a working abattoir, butcher’s block, or meat market at dusk.
    • Strike the harvesting-resonance tuning fork against the blade’s iron spine and touch the base to the bloodstone while drawing a droplet of fresh animal blood or brine across the etched runes.
    • Recite the solemn oaths of clean harvest and anatomical respect until the etched slaughterhouse runes ignite with a low crimson glow and the bloodstone pulses like an ember.
    • Inspect the talisman through the Mind’s Eye to confirm its Tier 1 Common classification, +1 Armor Check kinetic ward, and flesh-aligned transmutation matrices before storing it in a salted leather pouch.

Ointment-Pots of Nine Red Ditches and Ox-Cleaver of Silent Knife-Man

In the early age of the world, when the great horned cattle of the swamp did have heads as broad as two grain-wagons and the river did run thick with yellow ox-fat, there was the high stone city of Ghor-Zir upon the red mud. The fifth broken shard of the slaughter-pit cylinder translates: The Great Herdsman Baal-Khad did own seventy thousand white bulls with gilded horns, but his heart was full of bile and small thoughts, for he did hate the clean knife and loved only the loud cracking of bones.

The Great Herdsman Baal-Khad did build the Long Chute of Iron, where five hundred beasts were driven each day into a deep ditch of stone. His men did beat the beasts with clubs of lead and tear the flesh with dull iron rakes, so that the meat did spoil upon the bone before the sun went down, and the smell of rot did rise into the clouds like black grease. The dogs of the city ate only worm-meat, and the children of the clay huts did cough from the sickness of spoiled lard.

There lived in the low ditch behind the salt-stalls a carver of flesh named Bar-Tarek, whom the gutter-men called The-Man-Who-Cutteth-Between-The-Gristle. Bar-Tarek did not carry a great club of bronze, nor did he yell with the mouth of an angry cow. He carried only a square piece of gray iron upon his throat, tied with the sinew of a great marsh-elk, and in the belly of the iron was a red drop of stone that did sweat oil when a sick beast walked past.

The eighth tablet of the ditch-priests reads: When Bar-Tarek laid his thumb upon the red stone of the iron knife, the joints of all four-legged things did become like dry straw in his eye, and the blood of the beast did not cry out in terror, but went into the clay bowl like sweet honey.

In the twelfth month of the Great Heat, a gigantic horned terror of the high hills—an Aurochs of black skin with teeth like iron wedges—broke the cedar gates of the Great Herdsman’s stockade. The beast was full of madness from drinking rotten marsh-water; its skin was hard like river-turtle shell, and five hundred spears of bronze did bounce from its ribs like dried peas. It trampled forty warriors of Baal-Khad into the mud and stood in the midst of the grain-floor, roaring so that the roof-tiles fell into the street.

The Great Herdsman Baal-Khad hid his face in a pot of salt, crying: “Whosoever shall bring me the skin of this terror shall have three chests of copper rings and a chariot of two mules!”

Bar-Tarek walked into the grain-floor. He had no shield of bronze and no iron shirt; he wore only his apron of cured ox-hide and the small iron cleaver upon his neck.

The tenth fragment of the red tablet states: Bar-Tarek did draw his thumb across the iron edge, and he did snap the bone of the knee-joint behind his head. Then the red stone did spit out a great cloud of white bone-dust and hot salt into the eyes of the black beast.

The black monster did sneeze with a great noise, and the cloud of salt-meal did take away its eyes so that it could not see the small man. Bar-Tarek did not strike at the hard bone of the head or the thick iron-hide of the shoulder. He looked through the red stone upon his chest and saw the one soft seam behind the left ear where the head-bone meeteth the neck-bone—a white thread no wider than a blade of marsh-grass.

With one stroke of his short knife, light as a woman cutting bread, Bar-Tarek touched the white thread. The great black beast did not scream; it sank down into the chaff like an ox lying down to sleep in sweet clover.

Then Bar-Tarek dressed the beast before the people. He did not hack the ribs with an axe, but cut along the seven true seams of the hide. Every strip of meat came away sweet and clean, without a drop of rotten marrow or black gall to spoil the fat. The five thousand people of the clay huts ate clean roast meat until their bellies were round, and the sickness of the red mud left the town.

When Baal-Khad came out of his salt-pot and held out the copper rings, Bar-Tarek did not look upon them. He took only one flat marrow-bone to boil with lentils and walked back into his hut by the ditch, his gray iron pendant resting cool against his throat.

Moral of the Story

  • Brute force and wasteful violence only ruin what they seek to harvest, bringing rot and ruin; true mastery lies in reverence for life, patience, and knowing the exact seams of the world, for a single precise cut guided by knowledge accomplishes what a thousand blind blows never can.
