Kitsune 819 of the Fox Fire Quiver

Lore

In the sun-dappled forests of Jōmon, master archers often honor the wild fox-spirits that roam the canopy, seeking their favor for keen sight and swift arrows. It is said that a mischief-loving Kitsune named Ren took pity on a novice bowman who continually missed his targets during a grand hunt. Sneaking into the bowman’s camp at night, Ren infused the hunter’s leather quiver with glowing fox-fire embers and playful wind magic. The result was an enchanted quiver that guides arrows around obstacles, ignites arrowheads with spectral light, and ensures a hunter never runs out of practice shafts. Today, replicas of this quiver—known as Kitsune 819—are crafted by shrine artisans for Tier 1 bowmen, scouts, and marksmen who walk the wild trails of Saṃsāra.

Description

Kitsune 819 of the Fox-Fire Quiver is a slender, hand-stitched quiver fashioned from supple tan leather and reinforced with brass fittings along the rim and base. Embroidered along its side is an ornate silk motif of a fox leaping through wind-swept pampas grass. The quiver’s throat is trimmed with soft white fur that glows with faint, rhythmic pulses of amber and violet light. When an arrow is drawn from its opening, a fleeting trail of orange fox-fire sparks clings to the fletching, filling the air with the faint scent of ozone and sweet cedarwood. Under True Sight, a tiny, spectral fox spirit can be seen curled inside the quiver, weaving threads of wind around every arrow placed within it.

Acquisition and Commerce of Kitsune 819 of the Fox-Fire Quiver

Across the 73 island nations of Saṃsāra, specialized ranged gear and enchanted archery equipment are traded through distinct commercial networks depending on the local culture, military presence, and martial guilds. Because bowmen, scouts, and rangers are essential for wilderness exploration and border defense, Kitsune 819 of the Fox-Fire Quiver circulates through several key merchant channels.

Types of Shops and Acquisition Locations

  • Fletcher and Bowyer Guild Outlets
    • Where to Find: Located in archery districts, military garrisons, and hunter guilds across major settlements in islands such as Jōmon, Banpo, and BADARIAN.
    • How It Is Bought: Master fletchers and guild bowyers craft and stock these quivers for scouts, elite marksmen, and traveling hunters. Transactions are handled through direct over-the-counter sales with standard merchant negotiation.
    • Cost: In a legitimate fletcher shop, the quiver is priced at a baseline of 100 Silver to 150 Silver (10 to 15 Gold). Avatars holding recognized membership in a Bowyer Guild, Hunters Union, or Border Scout Corps receive a 10% discount based on their Tier level (a Tier 1 character receives a 10% discount off the agreed price).
  • Shrine Artisan Emporiums and Spirit Emporia
    • Where to Find: Situated near holy mountain shrines, sacred grove sanctuaries, and temple market plazas where consecrated tools and spirit-blessed equipment are sold.
    • How It Is Bought: Shrine attendants and spirit-smiths offer these quivers as blessed relics crafted to honor fox-spirits. They are typically displayed in silk-lined wooden boxes accompanied by incense offerings and ritual attunement ceremonies.
    • Cost: Due to the sacred craftsmanship and spirit attunement, shrine artisans sell the quiver at a premium price ranging from 180 Silver to 300 Silver (18 to 30 Gold).
  • Wilderness Outposts and Smuggler Dens
    • Where to Find: Found along remote frontier trails, illegal hunting camps, and shadow markets operating outside city walls.
    • How It Is Bought and Sold: Frontier outfitters and black-market fences trade these quivers to poachers, mercenaries, and rogue archers who value the endless arrow generation and trick-shot capabilities for extended wilderness treks.
    • Cost: Smugglers and wilderness fences sell the quiver for between 220 Silver and 380 Silver (22 to 38 Gold) due to high demand in frontier zones. When a character sells a quiver to a fence, the fence pays standard black-market rates (50% to 60% of base valuation), yielding roughly 150 Silver to 200 Silver depending on condition.
  • World Bank Account Redemption (Financial Transactions)
    • Where to Find: Official stone bank branches operated by the god of commerce in major urban centers across all 73 island nations.
    • How It Is Bought: The World Bank maintains no physical gear inventory. However, avatars opening a new account receive a 100 Gold starting deposit alongside a choice of a self-recharging utility item (Blender, Clock, or Toaster). To purchase the quiver from an independent seller using bank funds, the avatar must withdraw physical coinage at a teller (subject to a 1% transaction fee rounded up to the nearest copper) or initiate a direct account transfer if the merchant holds a World Bank business account.

Selling the Item to NPC Merchants

When an avatar opts to sell Kitsune 819 of the Fox-Fire Quiver to an NPC merchant, standard commerce protocols apply:

  • Merchant Offer: Merchants base their offers on 10% of the item’s baseline value multiplied by the seller’s character tier (for a Tier 1 character, this reduces the baseline valuation by 10%). Standard shopkeepers will typically offer between 45 Silver and 75 Silver (4.5 to 7.5 Gold) for the quiver.
  • World Bank Deposit: Proceeds from legal merchant transactions are automatically deposited into the character’s World Bank account upon transaction completion, accessible via their Mind’s Eye.
  • Merchant Ledgers: Legitimate bowyers log all weapon and equipment sales in official registers. If the quiver was taken from a fallen guild scout or stolen from a shrine, city wardens or ranger captains may follow up on the transaction ledger.

Tactical Roleplay Applications: Environmental Offense and Defense

Kitsune 819 of the Fox-Fire Quiver is far more than a simple arrow container for a marksman. In the hands of a clever bowman, archery and fox-spirit magic become potent assets for both offense and defense across the diverse landscapes of Saṃsāra.

Overgrown Jungles and Dense Forest Trails

Deep within ancient woodlands and thick canopy jungles, dense foliage and towering trees frequently block clear shots and conceal hidden ambushers.

  • Defensive Roleplay: When ambushed along a narrow forest path, the bowman uses Distracting Decoy Arrow. By firing a shaft into a thick cluster of bushes 50 feet away, the arrow detonates in a sudden burst of fox-fire sparks and echoing fox yips. Enemy trackers turn toward the disturbance, giving the bowman and their party a critical moment to take cover behind tree trunks while the quiver’s Aegis Cover shifts shimmering leaf-and-fire illusions around them to deflect incoming counter-fire.
  • Offensive Roleplay: Faced with a sniper hiding behind a thick hardwood tree, the bowman activates Trick Shot. Whispering a brief prayer to the fox-spirit, the archer looses an arrow directly past the tree. In mid-flight, the shaft bends at a sharp 90-degree angle around the trunk, striking the hidden target behind full cover and bypassing their concealment entirely.

Overgrown Ancient Ruins and Stone Crypts

In crumbling temples and narrow stone corridors, long sightlines are rare, and acoustics amplify every sound.

  • Defensive Roleplay: When cornered in a dimly lit stone vault by hostile creatures, the bowman draws an arrow with Fox-Eye Precision. The passive low-light enhancement allows the archer to pick out enemy weak points in near-total darkness. As enemies charge down narrow hallways, the subtle fox-fire illusions around the quiver throw off the attackers’ depth perception, causing their swings to slide off the bowman’s flank.
  • Offensive Roleplay: In pitch-black crypts, the bowman activates Fox-Fire Tip. Touching a drawn arrowhead ignites it with a brilliant violet flare before launching it into a distant shadow. The arrow pins a target to the stone wall while bathing them in glowing light, exposing their location to the entire party and preventing them from slipping back into the darkness.

Urban Rooftops, Narrow Alleys, and Market Plazas

Within bustling city streets and rooftop walkways, civilian crowds and complex architecture make conventional archery difficult.

  • Defensive Roleplay: When pursued across tile rooftops by city guards or rival assassins, the bowman looses a Distracting Decoy Arrow into an empty alleyway below. The sudden flash of amber embers and barking fox sounds creates chaos among street guards, drawing their focus down to the street level while the bowman slips away unnoticed across the roofline.
  • Offensive Roleplay: When targeting a fleeing mark who dives around a stone chimney or behind a market stall, the bowman looses a Trick Shot. The arrow zips down the alley, ricochets in mid-air around the corner without losing velocity, and clips the target’s leg, pinning them to the cobblestones without endangering surrounding bystanders.

Harsh Deserts and Windswept Wastelands

In open, barren deserts where howling sandstorms disrupt flight paths and ammunition is scarce, reliability is key.

  • Defensive Roleplay: When caught in a blinding sandstorm or face-to-face with charging desert mounts, the bowman relies on Feather-Weight Draw. While gale-force winds blow enemy arrows off course, the magic of the quiver ensures the bowman’s shafts cut straight through the storm without drag or wind resistance, picking off threats before they close the distance.
  • Offensive Roleplay: Trapped in a desolate wasteland with no supplies or town for miles, the bowman relies on Endless Fletching. As the party runs low on ammunition during an extended siege against desert raiders, the quiver continuously manifests fresh, perfectly balanced arrows, ensuring the bowman never runs dry and can maintain a relentless barrage until the enemy breaks.

      • Positives: Grants instantaneous spatial awareness and wind calculations, allowing for impossible trick shots around cover.
      • Negatives: The sudden flood of sensory trajectory data can cause mild mental disorientation if activated repeatedly in rapid succession.
    • True Sight Perception:
      • User’s Perspective: With True Sight, the user beholds a playful, glowing orange fox spirit named Ren leaping out of the quiver, running along the length of the arrow shaft, and blowing wind currents to steer the projectile.
      • Observer’s Perspective: A True Sight observer sees a spectral three-tailed fox riding the archer’s shoulder, guiding the archer’s hands and weaving magical wind trails around every drawn arrow.
      • Positives: Reveals the exact spirit magic interacting with the arrow, confirming whether magic-negating effects are present.
      • Negatives: The spectral fox stands out like a blazing beacon to hostile mages and anti-spirit spellcasters equipped with True Sight.
    • Soul Sight Perception:
      • User’s Perspective: The user feels their soul aura lock into harmony with the wild, mischievous nature of the fox spirit, filling them with a surge of swift, predatory focus.
      • Observer’s Perspective: A Soul Sight observer sees the archer’s spiritual aura flare with flickering violet fox-fire, sharpening into a narrow, needle-like beam focused entirely on the target.
      • Positives: Sharpens instinct and reduces hesitation, granting a calm, unshakeable state of mental clarity during high-stress skirmishes.
      • Negatives: The intense flare of spiritual energy makes it impossible to mask one’s soul presence from spiritual trackers or necromantic entities.

    • 1 drop of fox-spirit ember-essence or fox-fire ash.

Tools Required

  • Awl & Heavy Leather Needles: For punching stitch holes and hand-stitching thick leather seams.
  • Jeweler’s Engraving Chisels: For carving fox motifs and runic channels into the brass collar and base plate.
  • Alchemical Crucible & Incense Burner: For heating the crystalline catalyst and infusing the leather with spirit scents.
  • Fluid Collector: Used to measure and apply exact droplets of cedarwood oil and ember-essence during attunement.

Skill Requirements

  • Crafting Skill Level: Minimum Skill Level 6 total in Leatherworking, Jewelry Crafting, or Arcane Crafting (requiring at least 5 base trained skill points plus character tier allowance).
  • Tier Level Requirement: Character must be at least Tier 1.
  • Ranged & Spirit Knowledge: Basic understanding of Jōmon archery mechanics, wind ballistics, and Kitsune spirit lore.

Crafting Steps

  • Step 1: Cutting and Stitching the Leather Sleeve
    • Measure and cut the tanned leather into a slender, tapered cylindrical sleeve measuring roughly twenty inches in length.
    • Using the awl and silver silk thread, hand-stitch the side seam using a reinforced saddle stitch, embroidering the leap-fox motif along the outer flank.
    • Attach the brass base plate to the bottom of the cylinder using brass rivets to ensure structural integrity.
  • Step 2: Fitting the Collar and Harness Mounts
    • Fit the brass rim collar over the top opening of the quiver, securing it with decorative brass studs.
    • Stitch the two harness buckles and D-rings to the back seam of the quiver to allow shoulder or belt attachment.
    • Line the inner rim of the brass collar with the soft white fox-fur trim.
  • Step 3: Preparing the Fox-Fire Catalyst
    • In an alchemical crucible, heat the ground violet Tier 1 Magic Crystal powder until it liquefies into a glowing, luminescent resin.
    • Using the Fluid Collector, mix in three drops of cedarwood oil and one drop of fox-fire ember-essence until the mixture emits a soft amber light.
    • Paint this glowing mixture into the inner brass channels of the rim and base plate.
  • Step 4: Imbuement and Spirit Attunement
    • Place the assembled quiver over an incense burner filled with dried pampas grass and sweet cedar shavings.
    • Recite the traditional Jōmon archery blessings while fanning the fragrant smoke through the quiver’s interior.
    • Allow the leather to absorb the smoke and ember-essence until the fur trim begins to pulse with rhythmic violet and amber light.
  • Step 5: Final Inspection and Calibration Test
    • Place three mundane wooden arrows into the newly crafted quiver.
    • Draw one arrow rapidly from the throat. If the fletching ignites with a harmless burst of orange fox-fire sparks, a bell-like chime rings from the brass rim, and a faint fox yip echoes in the air, the Kitsune enchantment has permanently bonded to the quiver.

Archer Ren and Burning Tail-Basket

Hear now this exceedingly broken speech, written down by four old monks who did not understand the first language and had very bad eyes.

In the time before the calendar had numbers, on the island of Jōmon, there was a man who shoots the bow. His name was Ren, but in the stone letters, he is called “The Man Who Uses the Stick to Throw Metal.” Ren was a very terrible archer. When he pulled the string, his arrow went into the mud. When he aimed at the deer, his arrow went into the sky and hit a passing cloud.

The other hunters of the village made very loud laughing sounds at Ren. They said: “Ren, you should stop holding the bow and instead hold a spoon, for a spoon cannot miss the mouth.” Ren was very much ashamed in his heart.

One night, when the moon was round like a silver plate, Ren went into the wild forest where the big trees grow closely together. He sat on a cold stone and cried three tears. He spoke to the darkness: “O, spirits of the wind! I wish to hit the target just one time so the village hunters will stop making the laughing faces at me.”

It is written that a wild beast came out of the bushes. It was a fox with three tails, called a Kitsune, but the bad stone translation calls it “The Red Dog with Too Many Back-Ropes.” This fox was named Ren also, or perhaps the scribe was confused and thought they had the same name. We will call the fox “The Orange Mischief-Maker.”

The Orange Mischief-Maker looked at the crying archer and made a sound like small copper coins rattling in a jar. It spoke in the ancient tongue: “Little stick-thrower! Your aim is like a blind crab walking on rocks. But I like your coat, and I am bored tonight. I will make a trick upon your arrows.”

The fox-spirit ran around Ren’s leather arrow-basket three times in the left direction and two times in the right direction. Then, it jumped into the air and spat a small flame of fox-fire into the basket. CRACKLE!

The leather arrow-basket did not burn to ashes. Instead, the top grew soft white fur that glowed like the moon, and the brass edges made a sound like a tiny bell ringing in a temple. The fox-spirit said: “Listen, bad archer! Now, when you pull an arrow, the wind-spirit will hold the feathers. If you shoot at a tree, the arrow will turn around the corner. If you run out of wood sticks, the basket will make new ones from the air. But do not be foolish, for fox-magic loves a funny joke.”

Ren took his newly enchanted quiver and ran back to the village. The next morning, a very large, mean wild boar came down from the mountain to eat the village cabbages. The other hunters pulled their bowstrings, but their arrows bounced off the boar’s thick, muddy skin.

Ren stepped forward. He pulled an arrow from the tail-basket. SNIP-CLICK!

A bright flare of violet and amber light erupted from the fur rim. Sparks of orange fox-fire ignited along the fletching, smelling strongly of burnt cedarwood and ozone. The other hunters covered their eyes, screaming: “Look! Ren’s bag is on fire!”

Ren did not care. He shot the arrow. The boar hid behind a giant stone wall. But the arrow did not hit the stone! In mid-air, the arrow made a sharp 90-degree turn, curving completely around the stone wall, and struck the boar in its left foot, setting its bristles on fire with harmless, bright fox-light. The boar was so frightened by the glowing light and the sound of phantom fox-yips echoing in its ears that it ran back up the mountain and never ate cabbages again.

The villagers made big cheering noises. They carried Ren on their shoulders and called him “The Master of the Curved Shaft.”

For many months, Ren used the Fox-Fire Quiver across the 73 island nations. When robbers hid behind trees, Ren shot arrows that bent around the trunks. When dark caves had no light, he shot fox-fire arrows to light up the walls. When he ran out of ammo during long hunts, the quiver made twenty fresh arrows out of thin air every day. He became very famous and grew very arrogant, wearing a big hat and refusing to talk to poor people.

However, as recorded in the final, crumbled sentences of the stone tablet, the trickster nature of the Kitsune could not be stopped.

During a grand tournament before the High King of Jōmon, Ren boasted: “I am so great that I do not even need to look at the target! My magic basket will do all the work while I close my eyes!”

Ren closed his eyes, drew a glowing fox-fire arrow, and loosed it with great force. But because Ren relied entirely on the magic and took no care to learn true marksmanship, the playful fox-spirit inside the quiver decided to play a trick. The arrow curved in mid-air, flew around the tournament grandstand three times, and struck the target—but it struck the target upside down, while simultaneously snipping the belt holding up Ren’s trousers.

Ren’s trousers fell to his ankles before the High King and three thousand spectators. Everyone made the biggest laughing noise ever heard in the 73 island nations. Ren ran into the forest in his underwear and was never seen again, though his quiver was found hanging from a cherry blossom branch, ringing softly like a bell.

Moral of the Story

It is recorded on the stone that an enchanted tool may guide your shaft around the hardest obstacles and grant you great fame among the simple-minded, which is a pleasant thing. Yet, he who relies solely upon the trickery of magic while neglecting to master his own basic skills will eventually find himself standing exposed before the world, proven to be nothing more than a fool whose pants have been pulled down by his own pride.

  • Flaw Aspect: Bright Fox-Light Gives Me Away

Stunts and Refresh Cost

  • Stunt: Fox-Eye Precision & Endless Ammo (Cost: 1 Refresh). When using Shoot or Notice while targeting or tracking in low-light conditions or through dense cover, you may create the situational Aspect Illuminated Target or Perfect Trajectory with one free invoke. You also ignore range penalties caused by wind, and you never run out of mundane arrows.
  • Stunt: Trick Shot (Cost: 1 Refresh). Once per scene, you may spend a Fate Point after drawing an arrow to shoot around a corner or obstacle up to 90 degrees. This allows you to make an Attack roll against a target behind full cover as if they were in the open.

Skill Stress & Mechanics

  • Equipment Rating: Weapon:0 / Armor:1 (Provides defensive protection via subtle, shifting fox-fire illusions that throw off an attacker’s aim).
  • Stress Cost for Distracting Decoy Arrow: Spending 1 Mental Stress allows the user to make a Shoot or Create an Advantage action to fire a decoy arrow up to two zones away. This creates a scene Aspect such as Fox-Fire Distraction with two free invokes.

Numenera / Cypher System

Artifact: Fox-Fire Quiver

Artifact Specifications

  • Level: 3 (1d6 + 2)
  • Form: A slender leather quiver trimmed with white glowing fur and brass fittings, smelling of ozone, sweet cedarwood, and dry pampas grass.
  • Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (checked after using active fox-fire tips, trick shots, or decoy arrow powers).

Passive Functional Mechanics

  • Fox-Eye & Endless Ammunition Asset: Carrying this artifact renders the user immune to range penalties caused by ambient wind or low-light conditions. It grants an Asset (lowering task Difficulty by 1 step) on all Speed-based tasks involving archery, tracking, or shooting in obscured environments. The artifact also automatically generates an endless supply of standard arrows.
  • Armor Bonus: The subtle fox-fire illusions generated by the quiver grant +1 to Armor against physical attacks.

Active Cypher System Powers

  • Fox-Fire Tip (1 Depletion Check): Upon activation, ignites the drawn arrow with spectral fox-fire. A successful hit deals +3 damage and illuminates the target for 1 minute, preventing them from hiding or benefiting from stealth.
  • Trick Shot (1 Depletion Check): The user looses an arrow that curves in mid-air around obstacles or corners up to 90 degrees, targeting a creature behind full cover against Level 3 Difficulty without line-of-sight penalties.
  • Distracting Decoy Arrow (1 Depletion Check): Fires a decoy arrow into an area within long range. It explodes in a shower of embers and echoing fox yips; all hostile targets in immediate range of the impact must pass an Intellect defense roll against Level 3 difficulty or become distracted for 1 round.
