Lore
In the rowdy gambling dens and street rings across the island nation of Jōmon, brawlers often tell tales of Kitsune 512—a pair of enchanted handwraps originally created by a jovial fox-spirit named Kintaro. Kintaro loved nothing more than watching tavern fights, but grew tired of seeing weak, heavy-footed boxers get knocked out before the match grew interesting. Sneaking into an underdog fighter’s locker, the spirit woven golden fox-fire threads and soft spirit-fur into the fighter’s linen wraps. The result was a pair of handwraps that absorb heavy blows, add kinetic spark to swift jabs, and grant a pugilist the slippery, elusive footwork of a fox. Today, replicas of these wraps are produced by martial shrines and arena artisans for Tier 1 boxers, pit-fighters, and monks who rely on their bare fists.
Description
Kitsune 512 of the Fox-Paws Handwraps consists of twin lengths of sturdy, unbleached linen cloth, finely trimmed along the knuckle ridges with soft white fur and embroidered with golden-orange silk threads depicting fox paws. When tightly wound around a boxer’s wrists and hands, the fabric glows with a warm, pulsing amber light that intensifies whenever a punch is thrown. As the boxer snaps a jab, a subtle trail of flickering fox-fire sparks leaves their knuckles, accompanied by the faint, muffled sound of a fox’s playful bark and the crisp scent of toasted rice and cedar. Under True Sight, twin spectral fox paws overlap the fighter’s fists, cushioning impacts and guiding strikes toward open guards.

Acquisition and Commerce of Kitsune 512 of the Fox-Paws Handwraps
Across the 73 island nations of Saṃsāra, unarmed martial gear, pit-fighting accessories, and enchanted handwraps circulate through distinct commercial venues tailored to brawlers, monks, and arena gladiators. Because boxers and street fighters range from underground prize-fighters to revered shrine martial artists, Kitsune 512 of the Fox-Paws Handwraps can be acquired through several commercial networks.
Types of Shops and Acquisition Locations
- Brawler Dōjōs and Pit-Fighting Arenas
- Where to Find: Located in fighting rings, underground prize-fight arenas, and martial arts academies across bustling urban centers in islands like Jōmon, Banpo, and BADARIAN.
- How It Is Bought: Trainer-masters, arena managers, and retired champion pugilists stock these handwraps for promising brawlers and street fighters. Transactions are conducted via direct cash purchases or as rewards traded for arena victory tokens.
- Cost: In an arena or dōjō pro-shop, the handwraps carry a baseline cost of 100 Silver to 150 Silver (10 to 15 Gold). Avatars who hold recognized standing in a local Fighting Guild, Pit-Runners Union, or Martial Dōjō receive a 10% discount based on their Tier level (a Tier 1 character receives 10% off the listed price).
- Shrine Artisan Emporiums and Martial Sanctuaries
- Where to Find: Positioned near mountain shrines dedicated to warrior spirits, sacred dōjōs, and temple market districts where consecrated martial gear is crafted.
- How It Is Bought: Shrine attendants and warrior-monks offer these wraps as consecrated tools blessed by fox-spirits. They are typically displayed in cedar boxes accompanied by ritual hand-wrapping demonstrations and spirit-attunement blessings.
- Cost: Due to the sacred weaving process and spirit blessing, shrine artisans sell the wraps at a premium price ranging from 180 Silver to 300 Silver (18 to 30 Gold).
- Black-Market Gambling Dens and Pawn Brokers
- Where to Find: Tucked away in back-alley gambling halls, shady pawnshops, and illegal fight-club locker rooms operating in the slums.
- How It Is Bought and Sold: Fences and bookies trade these wraps to pit-fighters, mercenaries, and underworld enforcers who value the extra reach, damage reduction, and illusions for street skirmishes.
- Cost: Black-market brokers sell the handwraps for between 220 Silver and 380 Silver (22 to 38 Gold) depending on fight-season demand. When a character sells a pair of wraps to an underworld fence, the broker pays standard shadow-market rates (50% to 60% of base valuation), yielding roughly 150 Silver to 200 Silver depending on condition.
- World Bank Account Redemption (Financial Transactions)
- Where to Find: Official stone bank branches operated by the god of commerce across major metropolitan cities in the 73 island nations.
- How It Is Bought: The World Bank holds no physical combat inventory. However, avatars opening a new account receive a 100 Gold starting deposit alongside a choice of a self-recharging utility item (Blender, Clock, or Toaster). To buy the wraps from an independent seller using bank funds, the avatar must withdraw physical coinage at a teller (subject to a 1% transaction fee rounded up to the nearest copper) or initiate a direct account transfer if the merchant maintains a World Bank business account.
Selling the Item to NPC Merchants
When an avatar chooses to sell Kitsune 512 of the Fox-Paws Handwraps to an NPC merchant, standard commerce protocols apply:
- Merchant Offer: Merchants calculate their offers based on 10% of the item’s baseline value multiplied by the seller’s character tier (for a Tier 1 character, this reduces the baseline valuation by 10%). Standard shopkeepers and arena outfitters will typically offer between 45 Silver and 75 Silver (4.5 to 7.5 Gold) for the wraps.
- World Bank Deposit: Proceeds from legal transactions with licensed merchants are automatically deposited into the character’s World Bank account upon transaction completion, accessible via their Mind’s Eye.
- Merchant Ledgers: Legitimate dōjōs and arena outfitters record all gear sales in official registers. If the handwraps were looted from a fallen guild fighter or stolen from a shrine dōjō, city wardens or arena referees may audit the transaction ledgers.
Tactical Roleplay Applications: Environmental Offense and Defense
Kitsune 512 of the Fox-Paws Handwraps turns an unarmed fighter into a lightning-fast, evasive combatant. In the hands of a skilled boxer, the blend of pugilism and fox-spirit illusion provides unique tactical options for both defense and offense across the varied terrain of Saṃsāra.
Crowded Taverns, Gambling Dens, and Pit-Fighting Rings
In tight, enclosed spaces filled with tables, spectators, and low ceilings, traditional weapons are awkward, but a boxer thrives.
- Defensive Roleplay: When cornered against a wooden bar or the ropes of a fighting pit by a heavier brawler, the boxer activates Slippery Bob-and-Weave. As the opponent throws a heavy right hook, the boxer slips smoothly underneath the blow, supported by the wrap’s Aegis Cover—which projects subtle, flickering fox-fire illusions that misdirect the opponent’s perception of the boxer’s head movement. Simultaneously, the Fox-Paw Cushion absorbs the grazing impact of any stray strikes, reducing shock to the fighter’s body.
- Offensive Roleplay: Facing an opponent holding a high guard behind thick leather gloves or a makeshift tavern shield, the boxer executes a Fox-Fire Jab. With a quick snap of the lead wrist, a trail of amber fox-fire sparks extends the punch’s reach by 5 feet, bypassing the opponent’s guard to pop them directly on the chin. The sudden burst of light dazzles the opponent, leaving them open for a follow-up combination.
Overgrown Jungles and Dense Forest Trails
Navigating tangled roots, mud, and thick foliage makes footwork difficult, but spirit-blessed handwraps allow an agile fighter to turn the environment to their advantage.
- Defensive Roleplay: Ambushed on a slick, muddy forest path by a creature or bandit, the boxer uses Iron-Wrist Fortitude to punch directly through falling debris or low-hanging branches without risking fractured knuckles or sprained wrists. If targeted by a sudden melee swipe, the boxer uses Trickster’s Counter, weaving past the claws in the mud and instantly snapping back a illusion-infused counter-jab that seems to strike from two directions at once.
- Offensive Roleplay: Trapped in dense undergrowth where weapons snag on vines, the boxer activates Phantom Shadow-Box. Striking the air three times, two flickering fox-fire clones step out into the foliage, shadow-boxing among the trees. The surrounding hostiles strike at the fiery illusions, allowing the real boxer to spring from the shadows and deliver magical, unarmored strikes to the distracted targets.
Narrow City Alleys and Stone Cobblestone Streets
In tight urban alleyways flanked by hard brick and stone walls, missed punches can break a fighter’s hands, making precision and resilience vital.
- Defensive Roleplay: When backed into a dead-end alley by multiple street enforcers, the boxer leverages the Fox-Paw Cushion and Slippery Bob-and-Weave. The tight alley space makes dodging difficult, but the wraps allow the boxer to roll with incoming strikes while using the narrow walls to bounce and pivot, letting the attacker’s fists smash uselessly into the cold stone walls.
- Offensive Roleplay: When an enforcer takes cover behind a metal barrel or stone pillar, the boxer strikes directly through or around the obstacle. With Iron-Wrist Fortitude, the boxer can smash their fist into solid stone or iron without taking recoil damage, driving a Fox-Fire Jab into the target’s exposed flank and lighting up the dark alley with glowing embers.
Open Arenas, Glacial Ice, and Ruined Stone Plazas
On wide-open stone plazas or slick glacial terrain where footing is treacherous and sightlines are clear, trickery and mobility win the day.
- Defensive Roleplay: Facing a heavily armored gladiator or beast on slippery, frozen ground, the boxer uses Phantom Shadow-Box. The fox-fire clones split off and dart across the ice, throwing off the enemy’s charge and making it impossible for the attacker to determine which set of footsteps on the slick surface belongs to the true boxer.
- Offensive Roleplay: Closing the distance across an open stone courtyard against an opponent with a long spear or polearm, the boxer snaps out a long-range Fox-Fire Jab. The magical reach and kinetic spark close the gap instantly, striking through the spearhead’s range before the polearm user can set their stance.

Perception of Activation:

- Taste
- User’s Perspective: A mild, warm tingle resembling cinnamon and toasted grains washes across the tongue and roof of the mouth as the spirit energy surges.
- Observer’s Perspective: Opponents struck near the face experience a brief, faint metallic tingle on their tongue from the static magic discharge.
- Positives: Clears stale saliva and keeps the mouth feeling fresh and dry during exhausting rounds.

- Positives: Grants instantaneous spatial awareness and reflex enhancement, enabling fast counters and slips.
- Negatives: The rapid influx of strike vectors can cause mild mental fatigue if activated repeatedly over long fights.
- True Sight Perception:
- User’s Perspective: With True Sight, the user beholds the jovial spirit of Kintaro—a golden three-tailed fox—ghosting over their shoulders, slapping its paws over the boxer’s fists to direct each strike.
- Observer’s Perspective: A True Sight observer sees a playful fox-spirit dancing around the boxer, weaving threads of golden light into the fighter’s gloves and pushing their elbows into proper form.
- Positives: Confirms the active presence of spirit magic and allows the user to detect if anti-magic wards are attempting to suppress the wraps.
- Negatives: Makes the fighter an obvious target for anti-spirit casters and exorcists equipped with True Sight.
- Soul Sight Perception:
- User’s Perspective: The user feels their soul aura ignite with a warm, playful kinetic energy, replacing fear and hesitation with the cunning, relentless drive of a hunting fox.
- Observer’s Perspective: A Soul Sight observer beholds the fighter’s spiritual aura flare outward in vibrant amber and violet flames, shaping into the silhouette of a pouncing fox.
- Positives: Bolsters mental fortitude, rendering the user resistant to fear effects and intimidating combat stances.
- Negatives: The blazing spiritual aura makes it impossible to mask one’s soul presence from spiritual trackers or necromantic entities.
- Mind’s Eye Perception:

- Recipe Title: Weaving of the Ember-Paw Handwraps
- Recipe Class: Minor Arcane Tailoring & Spirit Imbuement
Materials Needed
- Base Textiles & Trim:
- 2 yards of durable, unbleached linen cloth or heavy cotton wrapping tape.
- 1 strip of soft white fox-fur trim (ethically harvested or offered as a spirit tribute).
- 1 spool of golden-orange silk thread for paw embroidery and seam reinforcement.
- Alchemical & Nature Catalysts:
- 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystalline Cell (coin-sized), ground into a fine amber catalyst powder.
- 1 small vial of cedarwood oil mixed with toasted rice dust.
- 1 pinch of fox-spirit ember-ash or consecrated shrine incense ash.
Tools Required
- Tailor’s Needles & Shears: For cutting fabric strips and executing fine hand-embroidery.
- Embroidery Hoop: To keep the linen taut while stitching the golden fox-paw motifs along the knuckle ridges.
- Alchemical Crucible & Incense Burner: For heating the crystalline catalyst and infusing the fabric with fragrant spirit smoke.
- Fluid Collector: Used to measure and apply exact droplets of cedarwood oil and toasted rice solution during attunement.
Skill Requirements
- Crafting Skill Level: Minimum Skill Level 6 total in Tailoring, Martial Arts Gear Crafting, or Arcane Crafting (requiring at least 5 base trained skill points plus character tier allowance).
- Tier Level Requirement: Character must be at least Tier 1.
- Martial & Spirit Knowledge: Basic understanding of Jōmon pugilism, hand-wrapping techniques, and Kitsune spirit folklore.
Crafting Steps
- Step 1: Cutting and Hemming the Wraps
- Measure and cut two equal strips of unbleached linen, each roughly ten feet in length and two inches in width.
- Hem the edges of both strips using heavy golden silk thread to prevent fraying during intense arena use.
- Attach thumb loops to one end of each wrap and sew the soft white fur trim along the wrist and knuckle sections.
- Step 2: Embroidering the Fox-Paw Motifs
- Secure the knuckle sections of the wraps into an embroidery hoop.
- Using the golden silk thread, hand-stitch the ornate three-paw motif directly over where the wraps will cover the knuckles.
- Stitch subtle runic channels along the inner seams of the wrist wraps to guide the flow of kinetic energy.
- Step 3: Preparing the Fox-Fire Catalyst
- In an alchemical crucible, heat the ground amber Tier 1 Magic Crystal powder until it melts into a glowing, luminescent liquid resin.
- Using the Fluid Collector, mix in three drops of cedarwood oil and a pinch of toasted rice dust until the solution emits a warm, golden glow and a sweet fragrance.
- Carefully paint this resin into the embroidered paw motifs and the inner runic channels of the linen.
- Step 4: Smoke Imbuement and Spirit Attunement
- Hang the handwraps over an incense burner filled with toasted rice, cedar shavings, and fox-spirit ember-ash.
- Perform traditional Jōmon pugilist hand-wrapping exercises while chanting spirit invocation blessings, allowing the dense smoke to permeate the fabric.
- Continue the ritual until the white fur trim begins to pulse with a steady, rhythmic amber and violet light.
- Step 5: Final Inspection and Calibration Punch
- Tightly wrap both hands with the newly crafted handwraps following standard boxing form.
- Execute a rapid jab into a heavy training bag or stone wall. If the knuckles emit a harmless spray of golden fox-fire sparks, a muffled spirit yip echoes in the room, and the impact feels cushioned without jarring the wrist, the Kitsune enchantment has permanently bound to the wraps.
Brawler Kintaro and Glowing Hand-Ropes
Hear now this exceedingly broken speech, written down by four old monks who did not understand the first language and had very bad eyes.
In the ancient time when the dirt was still soft, on the island of Jōmon, there was a man who fights with his bare hands. His name was Kintaro, but in the old stone letters, he is called “The Man Who Slaps Things with His Fingers.” Kintaro was a very terrible prize-fighter. When he threw a punch, his fist hit only the empty wind. When he struck the heavy leather bag, his wrist made a loud CRACK sound and he cried for three days because his knuckles were broken.
The other fighters of the tavern ring made very loud laughing sounds at Kintaro. They said: “Kintaro, you should stop putting up your fists and instead put up your feet to run away, for a rock has better punch-skills than you!” Kintaro was very much ashamed in his heart and drank many bowls of cold soup in the corner.
One night, when the moon was yellow like a ripe melon, Kintaro went into the mountain forest where the trees grow close together. He sat on a cold log and struck his fists against a pine tree. THUD! He screamed in pain: “O, spirits of the mountain! I wish to throw a jab that does not break my own bones, so the tavern brawlers will stop making the laughing faces at me.”
It is written that a wild beast came out of the dark bushes. It was a fox with three tails, called a Kitsune, but the bad stone translation calls it “The Yellow Dog with Too Many Tail-Strings.” This fox was named Ren, or perhaps Kintaro, or perhaps the scribe forgot the name and wrote “The Orange Mischief-Maker.”
The Orange Mischief-Maker looked at the crying fighter and made a sound like dry peas rattling in a tin cup. It spoke in the ancient tongue: “Little bone-breaker! Your punch-form is like an angry toad jumping into a wall. But I like your soft face, and I am bored tonight. I will make a trick upon your hands.”
The fox-spirit ran around Kintaro’s linen hand-ropes three times in the left direction and two times in the right direction. Then, it jumped into the air and spat a small flame of golden fox-fire onto the cloth. CRACKLE!
The linen hand-ropes did not turn to black ash. Instead, the edges grew soft white fur that glowed like warm embers, and the golden thread embroidered itself into the shape of small fox paws across the knuckle-spaces. The fox-spirit said: “Listen, bad brawler! Now, when you wrap your hands, the spirit-fur will cushion your stupid bones. When you snap a jab, the fox-fire will reach five feet further than your arm. If you hit a stone wall, your wrist will not break. But do not be foolish, for fox-magic loves a funny joke.”
Kintaro wrapped his hands with the Fox-Paws Handwraps and ran back to the village gambling den. The next night, a giant, mean pit-fighter named “The Iron Bull” came into the ring to beat up everyone and take their silver coins. The other fighters tried to punch The Iron Bull, but their fists bounced off his giant belly and they fell down crying.
Kintaro stepped into the dirt ring. He wrapped his fists tightly. SNAP-TUCK!
A bright flare of golden-orange and violet light erupted from his wrists. Sparks of fox-fire ignited along his knuckles, smelling strongly of toasted rice, cedar smoke, and static ozone. The crowd covered their eyes, screaming: “Look! Kintaro’s gloves are on fire! Call the water-bucket man!”
Kintaro did not care. He threw a quick left jab. He was ten feet away from The Iron Bull! But the magic fox-fire extended from his knuckles like a glowing spirit arm, hitting The Iron Bull right on his big flat nose with a loud POP! and a sound like a phantom fox barking merrily in the room. The Iron Bull was so dazzled by the bright embers and the double-striking illusions that he turned around three times in confusion and fell flat on his face into the dirt.
The gamblers made big cheering noises. They threw their hats into the air and called Kintaro “The Prince of the Long Fist.”
For many months, Kintaro fought across the 73 island nations. When street enforcers cornered him in narrow stone alleys, he punched directly through brick walls without hurting his knuckles. When dark fighting pits had no torches, his hands lit up the arena. When heavy champions tried to grab him, he used his slippery fox-step to weave under their arms like oil. He became very rich, bought a silk robe with gold buttons, and stopped saying “thank you” to his mother.
However, as recorded in the final, crumbled sentences of the stone tablet, the trickster nature of the Kitsune could not be stopped.
During a grand championship bout before the High Lord of Jōmon, Kintaro boasted to the crowd: “I am so strong that my fists do not even need my body! I can defeat this champion while keeping my eyes closed and my feet tied to a wooden chair!”
Kintaro sat in a chair, closed his eyes, and began shadow-boxing the air with great speed. The handwraps activated, creating two glowing fox-fire illusions that shadow-boxed beside him. But because Kintaro relied entirely on the magic wraps and had never bothered to learn true footwork or self-discipline, the playful fox-spirit inside the linen decided to have a grand laugh.
The two fox-fire clones turned around in mid-air, reached back, and delivered a double-uppercut not to the opponent, but directly into the wooden legs of Kintaro’s chair. The chair shattered into a hundred pieces! Kintaro flipped backward through the air, landed head-first in a barrel of sour pickles, and stuck there with his feet kicking in the sky.
The High Lord and four thousand spectators made the loudest laughing noise ever recorded in the 73 island nations. Kintaro crawled out of the pickle barrel and ran into the forest with a wooden bucket stuck on his head. He was never seen again in the prize-rings, though his glowing wraps were found neatly folded on an anvil, smelling sweetly of toasted rice and cedar.
Moral of the Story
It is recorded on the stone that an enchanted wrap may cushion your fragile knuckles and grant your jab the reach of a spirit, which is a very fine thing in a bar-room brawl. Yet, he who relies entirely upon magical tricks while neglecting to build true discipline and humble skill will eventually find himself knocked upside down by his own arrogance, standing before the world with his head stuck in a barrel of pickles.
