Lore and Foundation
The history of the Rhaconian Deeps is not written in ink, but etched in pressure-forged obsidian and sung in the sonar-hymns of its people. Over seven millennia ago, a flotilla of souls arrived in Saṃsāra. These were the Progenitors, souls from a dying water world whose memories were of advanced engineering, communal living, and a constant struggle against a hostile environment. They found themselves reincarnated in a vast, deep ocean basin off the coast of a major island continent, a trench deeper and wider than any they had known. This was the Atacama Trench, a place of crushing pressure, absolute darkness, and unique magical currents.
Led by the first Matriarch, whose memories were sharpest, they did not despair. Using their innate knowledge, they began to build. They did not conquer the deeps; they allied with them. They learned to magically coax the native, bioluminescent coral to grow into pressurized structures. They harnessed the immense power of geothermal vents, not with crude steam, but by binding elemental fire and water spirits to create stable, unending energy. Their society was one of necessity: every individual had a purpose, and all resources were held in common, administered by the Matriarch for the survival of the whole. This foundational principle evolved into the current political structure where the monarchy owns all land and infrastructure, a concept unquestioned by those born within the Queendom.
The ruling nobility that emerged from these Progenitors are the Rhaconids. Through generations of adaptation to the deeps, guided by their unique magical heritage, they developed distinct attributes. They possess an uncanny intellect and manual dexterity, capable of solving intricate mechanical puzzles and remembering complex magical formulae—a trait inherited from their raccoon-like ancestors. Physically, they are adapted to the crushing depths, with dense bone structure and a sophisticated internal sonar sense, much like the Northern Bottlenose Whales that navigate the upper layers of their domain.
Over the centuries, the Queendom grew. As other souls arrived on Saṃsāra, those with memories of aquatic lives or a yearning for the quiet solitude of the depths were drawn to Rhaconia. The monarchy, ever pragmatic, established a system of inducements. Quests were issued on the surface world, offering significant rewards for avatars of specific aquatic or subterranean ancestries to immigrate, bringing their skills and cultural memories to enrich the Queendom. This has led to a cosmopolitan, albeit stratified, society living in a network of magnificent, magically sustained cities across the ocean floor.
Society and The Citizen’s Perspective
The sentiment of a Rhaconian citizen towards their nation is complex and largely dependent on their station and origin. For the vast majority born within the abyssal cities, there is a profound sense of security and pride. The phrase “The Queen’s Pressure shields us, The Mother’s Trench feeds us” is a common saying. They see their “rent,” the comprehensive taxes paid to the crown, not as a burden but as their contribution to the collective survival. This tax funds the grand magical wards that keep the water out, the military wardens who hunt leviathans in the dark, the light-crystals that illuminate the cities, and the hydro-trains that connect them. To them, the world of the sun, the “Surface,” is a chaotic, dangerous place. In the deeps, there is order, purpose, and safety.
However, for some reincarnated avatars who remember worlds with concepts of private property and individual liberty, the Queendom can feel profoundly oppressive. They may see the Queen not as a protector, but as an absolute landlord. While their essential needs are met, the inability to own a home, start a business without royal charter, or accumulate wealth outside the strict guild system can be stifling. These individuals often congregate in specific cultural enclaves, attempting to recreate the societies they remember, creating pockets of dissent and political friction. While open rebellion is nearly impossible against the might of the throne, political intrigue, black markets, and smuggling to the surface are common outlets for their frustration.
Heredity being matrilineal shapes every aspect of society. Family names, titles, and inheritances (of position and renter’s rights, not property) are passed from mother to daughter. This has created a stable social fabric where women hold the primary positions of power in government, guilds, and families.
Daily life is a spectacle. Following the world’s custom, gear is elaborate and expressive. Citizens wear clothing woven from enchanted kelp fibers that shimmer with their own light, adorned with polished abyssal pearls and carapaces of exotic crustaceans. High-ranking nobles and powerful mages wear gear integrated with living, symbiotic organisms that react to their emotional state or magical output. Magic is as common as breathing. A market vendor will use telekinesis to arrange their wares, a technician will use diagnostic spells to check the integrity of a pressure shield, and children in compulsory education learn elemental cantrips alongside their local history and language, the Abbevillian Common Tongue being the official language of trade and government.
The Environments of the Queendom
The Rhaconian Deeps encompass the entirety of the Peru-Chile Trench and the surrounding abyssal plain, making it one of the largest nations by area on Saṃsāra. The capital city, Cetacea-Prime, is not built on the seafloor but carved into the trench wall itself, a vertical metropolis of glowing coral and obsidian connected by enormous, water-filled elevator shafts.
The Queendom boasts at least ten major instances of each of the following habitat types, each administered by a noble house:
Natural Habitats:
- The Luminous Reefs of the Matriarch: Genetically and magically engineered coral ecosystems that glow brightly enough to illuminate entire districts. They serve as vast residential complexes.
- Whispering Kelp Forests: Dense forests of giant, pressure-resistant kelp reaching over a thousand meters high. Their leaves are harvested for food, textiles, and potent alchemical reagents.
- The Unfathomable Trenches: The deepest parts of the realm, largely unexplored. They are known to be home to colossal, ancient creatures and are rumored to hold gateways to the elemental planes of water and earth.
- Crystal Cave Networks: Expansive cave systems lined with piezoelectric crystals. These crystals are harvested and used in the nation’s magical energy grid and sonic defense systems.
- Seagrass Prairies of the Abyssal Plain: Vast, gently rolling plains of phosphorescent seagrass, serving as the primary agricultural centers for aquaculture and beast husbandry.
- The Ignis Depths: A volcanic vent cluster region governed by a vassal lord. Its cities, like the Magma Maze, are built around lava flows by a population of fire-resistant avatars, providing the Queendom with rare metals and geothermal power.
- Sunken Primordial Forests: Ancient, petrified forests from a bygone era, now submerged. The magically preserved wood is harder than steel and is used for heavy construction.
Constructed Habitats:
- Cities of the Progenitors (Atlantean Cities): The original sunken cities built by the founders. Now, they are protected historical sites, centers of learning, and home to the most powerful mages.
- Merfolk Communes: Traditional villages built by Merfolk immigrants, who prefer open-water living. They are constructed from living coral and shells, existing as semi-autonomous protectorates of the crown.
- The Bastion-Castles: Submerged fortresses that dot the nation’s borders. They house the Warden military forces and their trained leviathan mounts.
- Abyssal Research Stations: Secluded facilities dedicated to studying deep-sea magic, lifeforms, and the nature of reincarnation itself.
- Grand Aquaculture Domes: Enormous, transparent domes on the abyssal plains where specialized fish, crustaceans, and sea vegetables are farmed on an industrial scale.
- Leviathan Graveyards (Repurposed Ships): The massive skeletons of defeated leviathans have been hollowed out and converted into bustling trade outposts and black markets.
- Temples of the Deep: Non-denominational temples dedicated to the concept of the ocean itself. They are places of quiet contemplation and are maintained by orders of telepathic monks.
Hybrid Habitats:
- The Hanging Gardens of Cetacea: Buoyant habitats anchored to the trench walls but floating within the water column. They house species less adapted to the extreme pressure and serve as diplomatic embassies for surface dwellers.
- Breathable Bubbles: Magically-created spheres of air, often miles in diameter. They contain parks, markets, and homes for air-breathing populations, serving as microcosms of surface life.
- Subaquatic Biome-Gardens: Enclosed lagoons where flora from vastly different environments are cultivated together using powerful magic, producing rare hybrid reagents for potions and enchanting.
- Reclaimed Alien Ruins: The ruins of non-humanoid civilizations that predate even the Progenitors. They are now inhabited by scavengers, explorers, and unique deep-sea creatures.
- The Eelgard Kingdom: A vassal kingdom within a magic-infused lagoon known for its high concentration of electrical magic. The inhabitants, descendants of reincarnated Electric Eels, are masters of energy control and are responsible for maintaining the Queendom’s power grid.
- Metropolis of New Atlantis: A massive, modern city combining various habitat styles. It features domed air-districts, flooded coral-towers, and deep-vent commercial centers, housing a diverse population of millions.
Potential Positives and Negatives
Positives:
- Unrivaled Security: The Queendom is almost impossible to assault from the surface, and its natural environment is a formidable defense. The centralized government and powerful military keep the populace safe from monstrous threats.
- Resource Monopoly: Rhaconia controls the sole source of many unique and magically potent materials, such as pressure-forged crystals, leviathan oil, and ancient coral, giving it immense economic leverage.
- Social Stability: The rigid social structure and cradle-to-grave support system prevent widespread poverty and homelessness. There is a place for everyone, and everyone knows their place.
- Technological Advancement: Isolation and necessity have driven innovation in magical engineering, life support, and enchantment, making their technology unique and highly advanced in its specific applications.
Negatives:
- Oppressive Authority: The monarchy’s total ownership of everything creates a lack of personal freedom and economic mobility. Dissent is quickly and quietly crushed.
- Systemic Vulnerability: The entire civilization is dependent on magic for light, air, and structural integrity. A catastrophic magical failure, disease affecting the living coral, or a disruption to the geothermal vents could doom millions.
- Xenophobia and Isolation: While they accept immigrants for their skills, Rhaconians are generally wary of outsiders and view surface dwellers with a mixture of pity and distrust, hindering diplomatic relations.
- Environmental Dangers: Life is a constant battle against the crushing pressure, colossal predators from the uncharted depths, and seismic instability from the volcanic vents. A single cracked dome can kill thousands.
