Ruling Nobility of Abyssal Queendom of Lumaris

Composed of two distinct but symbiotically linked races. They are not a majority of the population but are the marginally predominant group within the halls of power, their unique traits having allowed their ancestors to master the political and magical environment of the deep sea.

The Hippocampi

The Voice and Face of the Crown

Species Equus marinus regalis (Royal Sea Horse). They are believed to be the descendants of souls who held strong memories of lives as graceful, intelligent, and socially complex herd animals, adapted over generations to the pressures of the abyss.

Physical Form and Sensory Traits The Hippocampi are elegant, humanoid avatars with a distinct equine appearance. Their upper torso, arms, and head are humanoid in proportion, but their head is distinctly horse-like, with a long muzzle, large eyes, and a flowing, fin-like mane that drifts in the water. In place of a nose, they have small, slitted nostrils that can seal, and discreet gill slits pulse on their necks and upper chest. From the waist down, they possess a powerful, serpentine tail that ends in a delicate-looking but strong fin. This prehensile tail provides their primary propulsion and allows them to anchor themselves to structures with ease.

Their most remarkable sensory trait is a form of passive hydro-empathy. Their entire bodies are sensitive to the most minute changes in water pressure, temperature, and bio-electric fields, allowing them to accurately perceive the emotional state of nearby creatures. They can feel the quickening pulse of a liar, the calm stillness of a meditating mind, or the aggressive bio-signature of a predator long before it attacks.

General Size They are typically taller and more slender than the average avatar, standing between 6.5 and 8 feet (2 to 2.5 meters) from their head to the base of their tail, with the tail itself often adding another 6 to 7 feet (about 2 meters) of length.

Body Pattern Their skin is smooth and iridescent, often resembling mother-of-pearl or polished nacre. The patterns and colors vary by noble house, ranging from silvery-white and pale gold to deep sea green and twilight blue. Each noble family cultivates a unique set of bioluminescent markings that flow along their spine, mane, and tail. These markings serve as living heraldry, glowing softly in the abyssal dark and shifting in intensity with their emotional state.

Life Cycle Following the matrilineal tradition of the Queendom, lineage is passed through the female. After courtship, the female Hippocampus lays a cluster of leathery eggs, which the male then transfers to a specialized brooding pouch on his abdomen. He carries and protects the eggs until they hatch. Hippocampi reach adulthood around the age of 30 and have a natural lifespan of approximately 200 years. Children, being non-magical, focus their compulsory education on history, diplomacy, and developing their innate hydro-empathy.

Potential Positives and Negatives

  • Positives: Their hydro-empathy makes them unparalleled diplomats, negotiators, and politicians, as they can read the mood of a room with supernatural accuracy. They are incredibly graceful swimmers, and their prehensile tail allows for exceptional stability and control in the water.
  • Negatives: Their slender frames are not built for brute physical force. Their emotional sensitivity can be a weakness, as they can be overwhelmed in crowds of avatars with chaotic or intensely hostile emotions. They are completely helpless on land, unable to support their own weight or breathe.

Specialized Item Slots Available

  • Cranial Crest: The hard ridge between their eyes and along their mane is suited for mounting delicate circlets, psionic amplifiers, or other head-worn magical gear.
  • Tail Sheath: Their prehensile tail can be fitted with armored sheaths, decorative jewelry, or utility harnesses to hold small items.

Environmental Adaptability They are perfectly adapted to high-pressure aquatic environments and can comfortably exist at any depth within the Queendom of Lumaris. They require no special gear to withstand the crushing pressure of the abyss. They cannot survive out of water for more than a few minutes.

Other Information The Hippocampi form the public face of the Lumaris government. They are the courtiers, the ambassadors, the administrators, and the public speakers. The Royal line of Queen Scylla are themselves Hippocampi. They rely on their symbiotic relationship with the Noctilurians to provide the strategic and arcane power that underpins their social rule.

The Noctilurians

The Mind and Shadow of the Crown

Species Lophiiformes sapiens nox (Wise Night Anglerfish). The Noctilurians are the embodiment of the cunning deep-sea predator. Their ancestral souls are thought to have been solitary hunters, master strategists, and patient mages, their forms shaped by the absolute darkness of the deepest trenches.

Physical Form and Sensory Traits Noctilurians are stocky humanoids with smooth, dark, and often rubbery skin that is cool to the touch. Their features are subtle, with small, pale, and seemingly useless eyes, a wide mouth that is usually kept closed, and no visible nose. Their most prominent feature is a bioluminescent lure, known as an esca, that grows from a long, flexible filament on their forehead. This esca is not just a light source; it is a complex biological and magical organ.

Their primary sense is an active form of perception called psycho-location. A Noctilurian constantly emits faint, nigh-undetectable psionic “pings” into the water around them. By reading the echoes that return, they build a flawless three-dimensional image of their surroundings in their mind, allowing them to perceive texture, density, and even magical auras in absolute darkness. Their esca acts as a sophisticated focus for this ability, allowing them to concentrate their perception on a single target or use the lure’s light to subtly influence the minds of those who stare into it.

General Size They are shorter and more broadly built than the Hippocampi, standing between 5 and 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) tall. Their build is one of immense stillness and patience.

Body Pattern Their skin is typically a uniform matte color, ranging from obsidian black to deep violet or midnight blue, allowing them to blend into the abyssal shadows. The only source of color and pattern is their esca. The color, shape, and pulse-rate of the lure’s light is unique to each individual and noble house, serving as their identifying mark and a symbol of their status.

Life Cycle Like all Lumarans, they follow a matrilineal line of succession. Noctilurians reproduce via external fertilization of egg clusters laid in heavily guarded, isolated grottos. They are solitary and studious in their youth, with their compulsory education focusing on magical theory, strategy, and the refinement of their psycho-location. They are considered adults around age 40 and can live for well over 300 years, their patience reflected in their longevity.

Potential Positives and Negatives

  • Positives: Their psycho-location makes them impossible to ambush in the dark and gives them a supreme awareness of their environment. The esca is a natural magical focus, making them exceptionally gifted mages, particularly in illusion, divination, and abjuration. Their patient, calculating nature makes them brilliant strategists and spymasters.
  • Negatives: Their conventional eyesight is extremely poor, making them vulnerable to sudden, bright flashes of light which can disorient their primary sense. They are not physically imposing and rely on their wits and magic for defense. Their lure is a visible target that, if damaged, can severely hamper their magical and sensory abilities.

Specialized Item Slots Available

  • Esca Filament: The flexible stalk of their lure can be fitted with magical conduits, focusing lenses, or reinforcing bands.
  • Esca Lure: The luminous tip of the lure can be capped, shrouded, or replaced with enchanted crystals and other magical foci to alter its color, intensity, and magical properties.

Environmental Adaptability They are most at home in absolute darkness and extreme pressure, often taking up residence in the deepest, most remote parts of the Queendom. They are as immune to the pressure as the Hippocampi but are more sensitive to high levels of ambient light. They are incapable of surviving on the surface.

Other Information The Noctilurians are the unseen power behind the Lumaris throne. They are the spymasters, the arcane researchers, the grand strategists, and the most powerful mages in the Queendom. While a Hippocampus might give a speech, it is the Noctilurian advisor standing in the shadows who wrote it, having already calculated its every political consequence. Their symbiotic rule is the foundation of the Queendom’s unshakeable stability.
