Lore
During the consolidation of the territorial survey guilds across the 73 sovereign island nations, high-ranking pathfinders faced extreme hazards when charting subterranean volcanic vents and high-altitude aether currents. To forge an all-encompassing apparatus of navigation, martial defense, and environmental mastery, master artificers gathered five disparate relics within an alchemical crucible powered by elemental steam. The volcanic dragon-talon bracers, the geode lenses of the silent deeps, the topographic riverstone compass, the weightless divine plume, and the slate of geometric symmetry were dissolved and merged into a single physical object under the supreme balance of the moon-goddess Gaialilith. Anchored by a massive Tier 5 crystal matrix, the synthesis collapsed the five forms into a single unified apparatus occupying a solitary physical slot, creating a legendary relic of sensory clarity, burning strikes, and wind-borne traversal.
Description
A single, articulated ocular visor and cranial frame forged from dark, cold-hammered iron and banded volcanic steel. Set across the brow is an array of polished geode lenses and riverstone discs inlaid with topographic wind etchings, framed by a sweeping crest of iridescent, silver-wound plumage along the left temple. The lateral hinges sweep down into claw-like mandibles carved from flame-hardened dragon talons that lock comfortably around the wearer’s cheekbones. At the forehead sits a flush geometric lattice of slate holding five identical, glowing river-glass spheres that pulse in synchronized harmony with the wearer’s breath. The item radiates a steady, pleasant warmth accompanied by the crisp scent of ozone, damp moss, and sweet furnace embers.

Multiple Passives Magic
- Lithic Resonance and Thermal Sight: The articulated geode lenses grant constant, high-definition thermal vision up to 120 feet through smoke, darkness, and non-magical fog, while providing passive vibrational awareness that detects structural flaws, hollow cavities, and tremors in stone or earth within 60 feet.
- Buoyant Zephyr Balance: The silver-wound plume continuously generates a localized updraft around the wearer, granting advantage on all balance and acrobatics checks, eliminating falling damage from heights of 30 feet or less, and ensuring the wearer always lands upright.
- Draconic Hearth Guard: The talon-forged framework channels residual dragonfire to provide total immunity to non-magical environmental freezing and extreme heat, while granting the wearer a 1 HP recovery bonus during long rests.
- Aura of Geometric Stillness: The flush slate lattice passively suppresses auditory vibrations within a 10-foot radius of the wearer, muffling ambient noise and granting a +5 bonus to stealth checks against sound-based detection.
- Topographic Mana Orientation: The riverstone compass mounts attune directly to the mana flows of natural landmarks, granting instinctive awareness of true north, elevation, and the direction of major rivers, coastlines, and mountain ranges.
Multiple Active Magics
- Emberstrike Talons (1 Action): Channeling elemental fire into the forward dragon-talon mandibles, the wearer projects a wave of slashing flames in a 15-foot cone or infuses their unarmed melee strikes with searing heat, dealing severe fire damage and igniting flammable terrain for 1 minute.
- Levitational Zephyr Traverse (1 Action): The wearer touches the riverstone dial, summoning a pressurized cushion of elemental wind beneath their feet. The wearer ascends up to 30 feet vertically or hovers and glides across liquid, chasms, or broken terrain at standard walking speed for 10 minutes.
- Focused Resonant Analysis (1 Action): Engaging the central geode oculars upon a single structure, creature, or mechanism for 6 seconds, the visor reveals all internal stress fractures, mechanical traps, or latent elemental auras, granting maximum insight into vulnerabilities.
- Lure of Ordered Symmetry (1 Action): The five glass spheres on the brow flare with radiant silver light, projecting a hypnotic geometric pattern in a 30-foot radius. Wild beasts, constructs, and orderly spirits within the area must pause and investigate the display for 1 minute unless attacked, providing a distraction for infiltration or escape.
- Misty Gale Shroud (1 Action): The visor discharges an expanding 20-foot sphere of cool, moss-scented mist and swirling wind currents centered on the wearer, deflecting incoming projectiles and granting total visual concealment for 1 minute while the wearer’s thermal lenses see through the shroud without penalty.
Specific Slot for this Single Item
Worn Item (Headwear Slot)
Targeting, Disabling, and Repairing Zephyr-Gilded Visor of the Prismatic Hearth 482
- Targeting and Disabling Thresholds:
- When an attacker declares a targeted strike against the visor itself while it is worn, the attack roll must bypass a dedicated defensive threshold rather than standard body evasion.
- The threshold to strike the visor equals the wearer avatar’s total Armor Check plus the avatar’s tier level (5) plus the roll of the avatar’s tier dice (5d12) plus the item’s own Armor Check value (+2).
- If a targeted strike successfully hits, the visor is immediately disabled and unattuned, causing all thermal vision, wind levitation, passive dampening fields, and active magics to shut down instantly.
- If a targeted attack hits the visor while it is already disabled or unattuned, incoming damage applies directly to the item’s hit point pool.
- The visor possesses a total hit point pool equal to the avatar’s maximum hit points plus 50 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 5).
- The item enters a physically broken state when it takes targeted damage equal to or exceeding half of its total hit point pool:$$\frac{\text{Avatar Maximum Hit Points} + 50}{2}$$
- Once reduced to half health or lower, the visor’s geode lenses fracture, its articulated dragon-talon mandibles jam, its plume unweaves, and its enchantments cannot be accessed or attuned until full repairs are completed.
- If targeted damage reduces the visor to zero hit points, the item is obliterated, shattering into worthless fragments of split dark iron, cracked slate, charred feather ash, and loose, chipped crystal shards.
- Repair Procedures:
- The visor cannot naturally regenerate lost durability over time, rests, or sleep; all sustained structural and magical damage must be restored by deliberate artisan intervention.
- The item cannot be re-attuned or worn with functional magic while in a broken state; its hit point pool must be completely restored back to maximum capacity before attunement is permitted.
- Restoring the visor requires an artisan, lapidary, or technomancer with advanced proficiencies in Metallurgy, Gemcutting, Arcane Rune Lore, and Artificing at a minimum skill level of 10 (base 5 plus 5 for Tier 5).
- Repairs must take place in an artisan workshop equipped with a steam-driven lapidary wheel, an elemental fire forge, and a jeweler’s micro-brazing apparatus to safely mend the delicate optics and articulated talon joints.
- Physical repairs demand matching high-grade materials: cold-forged dark iron wire, refined volcanic steel flux, a pinch of crushed turquoise powder, and a drop of heat-stabilized elemental oil to reseal the geode facets and slate lattice.
- Once structural cracks are welded, the five river-glass spheres realigned, and the item’s hit points restored to full, the wielder must undergo a standard attunement sequence of at least one full minute under an open sky before the visor’s passives and active magics function once again.
Acquisition and Commerce of the Zephyr-Gilded Visor of the Prismatic Hearth 482
- Methods of Acquisition:
- Master Artificing Synthesis: An avatar possessing advanced proficiencies in Metallurgy, Gemcutting, Arcane Rune Lore, and Artificing at skill level 10 can synthesize the five prerequisite Tier 1 relics: Offering of Balanced Order 273, Resonant Geode Lenses 909, Wind 917 of the Terra Zephyr Compass, God Given 722 of the Whispering Plume, and Emberstrike Bracers. The fusion requires an artisan workshop equipped with closed-circuit steam conduits combining elemental fire and water, a massive Tier 5 magic crystal as a power reservoir, payment of the 15% consolidation fee based on base item values, and a successful synthesis check avoiding a roll of 1 on a d20.
- Exploration of Sealed Volcanic Observatories: The visor may be recovered from ancient high-altitude survey sanctuaries or subterranean observatories buried near the tectonic rifts of the volcanic island nations. These lost research sanctums, abandoned by early geographers, keep their central observation chambers locked behind complex geothermal pressure doors and steam-powered traps.
- Extraction from a Tier 5 Sovereign Pathfinder: Defeating an elite, rogue grand surveyor or sovereign inquisitor who wears the visor provides an opportunity for recovery. Because carried equipment of high-tier avatars typically dissipates into elemental sparks upon death, the visor must be pried free via targeted disarm maneuvers, stolen through high-stakes stealth, or surrendered via formal capitulation treaty prior to the avatar’s final demise.
- Sovereign Guild Elevation Gift: The collective conclaves of the Imperial Cartographers or Delvers’ Sodality across the 73 sovereign island nations may bestow this relic upon an avatar who charts an entirely new, stable aerial trade route between high-altitude spires or unearths a primary geothermal vein capable of powering a metropolitan district.

- The Grand Geodetic Emporium (High-Altitude Spire Capital):
Tactical Application and Environmental Roleplay of the Zephyr-Gilded Visor of the Prismatic Hearth 482
- Volcanic Calderas, Lava Tubes, and Subterranean Mantle Rifts:
- Offensive Tactics:
- Operating within blinding fields of volcanic ash and sulfur clouds, the wearer relies on Lithic Resonance and Thermal Sight to track hostile fire salamanders and magma elementals moving through molten flows.
- Engaging an enemy dugout behind cooled basalt slabs, the wielder unleashes Emberstrike Talons, channeling the intense thermal energy of the surroundings to project a wave of white-hot dragonfire that superheats the stone barrier, cracking it open and scorching those sheltered behind it.
- The avatar activates Focused Resonant Analysis to inspect the brittle crystalline struts of an overhead volcanic archway, identifying its primary shear fracture and directing an ally’s kinetic blast to drop thousands of tons of molten slag onto an advancing enemy regiment.
- Defensive Tactics:
- In zones where ambient temperatures exceed the tolerance of flesh, the Draconic Hearth Guard passive renders the wearer completely immune to non-magical heat and volcanic scalds.
- When a sudden geothermal geyser erupts beneath the squad’s footing, the avatar invokes Levitational Zephyr Traverse, catching the rising heat currents to loft 30 feet above the scalding liquid and hovering safely above the magma pool while establishing a tether line for companions.
- If an enemy lava burrower strikes from underneath, the visor’s tremorsense picks up the compression waves through the solid basalt floor seconds before the crust fractures, allowing the avatar to sidestep the breach without needing visual line of sight.
- Offensive Tactics:
- High-Altitude Cloud Spires, Sky-Bridges, and Floating Megacities:
- Offensive Tactics:
- Crossing open aerial gangplanks 3,000 feet above the sea, the avatar activates Misty Gale Shroud to envelop their approach in swirling clouds of condensation and howling winds, completely concealing their silhouette from parapet sentries while closing the distance across exposed cables.
- When cornered by sky-skiff raiders on a narrow wooden landing stage, the avatar channels Emberstrike Talons into sweeping melee arcs, slicing the rigging and combustion balloons of hostile air-skiffs with flame-wreathed dragon-talon mandibles to ground the vessels.
- Confronting a flight of predatory wind drakes or winged combatants, the wearer triggers Lure of Ordered Symmetry; the five river-glass spheres flare in mathematical harmony across the brow, forcing the territorial beasts to stall in mid-air and fixate on the hypnotic geometric display, leaving their flanks vulnerable to the squad’s ranged fire.
- Defensive Tactics:
- In the face of violent gale-force squalls that threaten to sweep defenders off catwalks, the Buoyant Zephyr Balance passive maintains absolute equilibrium, treating vertical drops as gentle descents and preventing all falling trauma from plunges of 30 feet or less.
- When bombarded by high-altitude ballista bolts or aerial crossbow volleys, the active wind-deflection currents of Misty Gale Shroud push kinetic projectiles off their trajectory, protecting the avatar from lethal piercing attacks.
- The integrated Topographic Mana Orientation continuously aligns the wielder’s senses to regional aetherial streams, ensuring that sudden cloud cover or white-out storms never cause the party to lose their heading or drift into jagged mountain peaks.
- Offensive Tactics:
- Submerged Abyssal Trenches and Water-Warded Enclaves:
- Offensive Tactics:
- Descending into lightless ocean trenches near underwater thermal vents, the wearer looks through the geode oculars, tracking deep-sea leviathans and submerged automata via heat signatures and waterborne pressure waves.
- When engaging hostile aquatic marauders near fragile reef structures, the wielder uses Focused Resonant Analysis to isolate the structural weak points of sunken anchor chains and marine barricades, severing them cleanly without triggering sonar reverberations that would alert benthic predators.
- Trapped within a pressurized air pocket inside an underwater ruin, the avatar triggers Emberstrike Talons against the stone floor, rapidly superheating the chamber’s air to flash-vaporize encroaching moisture and force aquatic skirmishers back into the cold deep.
- Defensive Tactics:
- In abyssal depths where visibility is zero and sonar traps abound, the visor’s Aura of Geometric Stillness muffles sound generation within a 10-foot radius, preventing the avatar’s breathing apparatus and boots from triggering acoustic pressure mines.
- If an undersea dome suffers a hull breach or explosive decompression, the wielder deploys Levitational Zephyr Traverse, establishing an air-mana buffer to brace against incoming torrents of water and hold position while activating emergency bulkheads.
- The Draconic Hearth Guard prevents the crippling hypothermia and numbness brought on by near-freezing ocean waters, keeping the avatar’s limbs agile during prolonged benthic operations.
- Offensive Tactics:
- Dense Canopy Jungles and Tangled Petrification Swamps:
- Offensive Tactics:
- In dense, triple-canopy jungles where foliage chokes all sightlines, the avatar engages Thermal Sight to trace the radiant heat trails of camouflaged ambushers through feet of hanging moss and tree trunks.
- To carve a rapid combat lane through petrified ironwood vines, the wielder lashes out with Emberstrike Talons, cutting burning furrows through tough, fossilized boughs and igniting protective walls of flame to herd feral monsters into killzones.
- When stalking reclusive, intelligent forest entities or scroll-beasts that patrol geometric territories, the avatar activates Lure of Ordered Symmetry, placing the hypnotic silver resonance of the five spheres along a trail to draw the creature into an open clearing for peaceful negotiation or capture.
- Defensive Tactics:
- When navigating slippery, treacherous roots over bottomless sinkholes, the plume’s Buoyant Zephyr Balance prevents slips, allowing the avatar to balance effortlessly on single vine strands without checking footing.
- If hostile jungle trackers deploy acoustic listening beasts or sonic shrieker fungi, the Aura of Geometric Stillness suppresses footfalls and rustling leaves, enabling completely silent transit through dense brush.
- When targeted by toxic swamp-spore bursts or sudden clouds of blinding pollen, the visor’s Misty Gale Shroud generates a circular outward vortex that blows away airborne contaminants before they can reach the wielder’s eyes or lungs.
- Offensive Tactics:
- Ancient Subterranean Labyrinths and Warded Vault Ruins:
- Offensive Tactics:
- Navigating pitch-black mining catacombs, the wielder uses Lithic Resonance to detect hidden passages, false walls, and sliding dungeon doors by feeling the slight hollow vibration in the bedrock beneath their boots.
- Encountering an ancient, magically fortified vault gate that defies physical brute force, the wielder conducts a Focused Resonant Analysis for 6 seconds; the geode lenses reveal the precise placement of internal counterweights, locking cams, and hidden tripwires, allowing for a surgical breach.
- In tight stone corridors packed with enemy guards, the avatar engages Emberstrike Talons, sweeping the talon mandibles forward to fill the hallway with rolling dragonfire, forcing the opposition to break formation and flee down the tunnel.
- Defensive Tactics:
- When triggering a pit trap or collapsing floor tile, the Buoyant Zephyr Balance automatically engages, catching the avatar on a rising pillar of air and allowing them to step back onto solid rock without plunging into the spikes below.
- In chambers rigged with deadfall ceilings or rolling stone boulders, the visor’s seismic feedback provides early warning of tectonic shifting, allowing the avatar to shout evasive commands seconds before the masonry drops.
- If surrounded in an enclosed vault by overwhelming subterranean forces, the wielder deploys Misty Gale Shroud to fill the small room with disorienting fog, extinguishing torchlight while thermal sight allows the avatar to navigate the melee with total visual superiority.
- Offensive Tactics:

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- Sight: The multi-faceted geode lenses slide downward with an articulated click, instantaneously transforming normal vision into a high-contrast spectrum of radiant heat signatures, piercing pitch-black darkness, thick smoke, and non-magical fog out to 120 feet. The five river-glass spheres resting on the slate lattice across the brow glow with a calm, silvery luminescence, casting faint geometric grids of light along the edges of the wielder’s peripheral vision.
- Sound: Ambient background noise within a 10-foot radius drops into near-silence as the acoustic dampening matrix takes hold, reducing loud clatter to a muffled whisper. Simultaneously, a rhythmic, deep mechanical hum resonates through the dark iron frame, harmonizing directly with the wearer’s skull bones like a gentle tuning fork.
- Touch: The dragon-talon mandibles hugging the cheekbones flare with dry, invigorating warmth that spreads across the neck and shoulders without scalding the flesh. At the same time, the silver-wound plume along the temple stirs with a light, cool draft, producing a distinct sensation of physical weightlessness that makes the avatar feel buoyant and light on their feet.
- Smell: A clean blend of damp mountain moss, freshly cracked stone, and hot iron fills the wielder’s nostrils, followed by a sharp, crisp draft of pine needles and ozone that purges stagnant air.
- Taste: A subtle mineral coolness coats the tongue, reminiscent of cold spring water drunk directly from deep subterranean bedrock, accompanied by a faint dry prickle of ash.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Lithic Tremorsense): Through the Mind’s Eye, the ground ceases to be an inert surface; it transforms into a vibrant, humming matrix. Footfalls, shifting soil, sliding subterranean deadbolts, and hollow cavities within 60 feet register as distinct tactile pulse-waves mapped directly into the wearer’s spatial consciousness.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Topographic Vectoring): A persistent, intuitive line of force connects the wielder’s mind to the true north of Saṃsāra’s magnetic weave, accompanied by a mental projection of the elevation, natural watersheds, and subterranean fault lines of the surrounding terrain.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Symmetrical Clarity): The chaotic details of the immediate environment realign into orderly mathematical patterns, allowing the user to instinctively isolate micro-flaws, mechanical stress fractures, and concealed architectural traps.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Sight: The multi-faceted crystalline lenses across the user’s brow flare with an intense, internal violet and pale gold luminescence, concealing the wearer’s eyes behind shifting star-like facets. The dragon-talon mandibles at the cheeks begin to glow dull cherry-red along their sharpened tips, shedding faint wisps of heat-shimmer, while the five spheres on the slate forehead crest pulse in synchronized silver harmony.
- Sound: The surrounding room noise abruptly dulls as if swallowed by a heavy velvet curtain whenever the user draws near, replaced only by a very faint, hypnotic whistle resembling wind rushing across high mountain stones.
- Touch: Anyone standing within five feet of the user feels an immediate temperature duality: a localized, radiant warmth like standing near a stone hearth, combined with a gentle, cool updraft that rustles loose cloaks and hair.
- Smell: Observers catch a distinct aroma of woodsmoke, heated stone, and rich forest soil carrying on a sudden, dry breeze.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Primal Authority): Sentient creatures and wild beasts facing the user feel an instinctual, territorial stillness—a combination of the predatory heat of a slumbering drake and the rigid, unyielding order of deep-earth stone that urges caution and discourages abrupt aggression.
- Positives:
- Grants total sensory dominance in obscured environments, completely neutralizing darkness, ash, smoke, and camouflage through high-definition thermal and seismic awareness.
- The acoustic dampening aura ensures silent movement and surgical infiltration, keeping heavy boots from giving away tactical positioning on hard stone or metal.
- The constant buoyant balance and hearth guard eliminate the hazards of vertical drops, extreme geothermal scalds, and freezing mountain squalls.
- The instantaneous identification of structural fractures and mechanisms allows for surgical trap dismantling and targeted demolition without alerting nearby sentries.
- Negatives:
- The vivid silver and violet flare of the active lenses, combined with the cherry-red glow of the talons, makes the wearer visually conspicuous in dark environments if not kept behind solid cover.
- In environments packed with violent geological disturbances (such as active volcanic collapses or concussive explosions), the immense flood of incoming seismic and thermal data can cause brief sensory disorientation.
- Fine non-thermal details, such as delicate ink inscriptions on cold parchment or painted canvas illusions, are difficult to read through the thermal crystal lenses without retracting the articulated optics.
- The aura of mathematical symmetry exerts a subtle psychological pull toward rigid perfectionism, causing the wielder to momentarily fixate on minor structural flaws rather than broad, chaotic tactical threats.

- Crafting Steps:
- Prepare the artisan workshop, locking the steam-pressure regulator valves to establish a vibrationless workspace and venting pure elemental heat into the primary forge hearth.
- Mount the Tier 5 Magic Crystal beneath the forge bed, using the brass-and-quartz channeling rod to draw a steady, controlled mana current into the central crucible.
- Place the Offering of Balanced Order slate and spheres, the Resonant Geode Lenses, the Terra-Zephyr Compass, the Whispering Plume, and the dragon-talon Emberstrike Bracers into the crucible basin.
- Vent pressurized elemental steam through the vat, softening and breaking down the five disparate forms while the channeling rod keeps their enchantments from unraveling into wild mana.
- Add the cold-forged dark iron, volcanic steel billets, and biological fluid extracts to the molten pool, stirring with the rod until the metals, dragon-talon bone, and riverstone coalesce into a single, high-density volcanic alloy.
- Transfer the cooling alloy to the steam-powered lathe; turn, bore, and hammer the material into an articulated cranial frame, curving the dragon-talon segments down into cheekbone mandibles.
- Roll a d20 to verify the stability of the synthesis: a result of 2 through 19 secures a successful Tier 5 integration; a roll of 20 imparts unintended harmonic resonance; a roll of 1 triggers a catastrophic containment breach that ruins all materials.
- Using the jeweler’s loupe and diamond-tipped needles, cut the primary geode crystal into multi-faceted ocular lenses, seat them into the articulated eye brackets, and affix the slate lattice with its five identical river-glass spheres directly across the brow.
- Anchor the ethereal feather to the left temple casing, winding it tightly with fine silver-spun thread and applying the pine resin essence to seal the buoyant wind enchantments.
- Inscribe microscopic vibration-nullifying glyphs and topographic map runes along the interior rim of the frame, brushing the grooves with the powdered riverstone and turquoise flux.
- Lower the assembled visor into the geothermal quenching vat for exactly three minutes, shock-sealing the dark iron frame and permanently locking the dragon-talons and optical crystals into a single physical object.
- Lift the completed Zephyr-Gilded Visor of the Prismatic Hearth 482 from the brine, dry the chassis, verify its internal thermal channels and lithic resonance through the Mind’s Eye, and prepare the singular headwear item for its one-minute attunement ritual under an open sky.
Five-Fold Brow-Piece, Crawling Mountain, and Woman Who Walked Upon Mist
In the first cycles, when the white face of Gaialilith had not yet finished washing the salt from the seventy and three rocks of the great water, the sky was not quiet as it is today. In those turnings, the fire from the belly of the world climbed up the stalks of the mountains like red peas growing on a pole, and the wind had no gates, blowing the skin from the backs of cattle.
There was in the high basalt country a carver of deep things whose name the dry skins record as Kesh-Elun, which the speech of our fathers renders as The Hand That Knows the Cool Coal. She was born with eyes that drank only blackness, yet she had the earth-feeling so sharp that she could tell a beetle’s footstep from the fall of an ash-leaf five hundred cubits down in the dark. Beside her walked a wanderer of the cloud-rafts, named Sor-Tarek, He Who Does Not Put His Foot in the Wet Clay, who wore upon his cap a pale wing-hair dropped by the laughing air-spirit, and carried in his pouch five stones of blue river-glass that sat upon a slate board like five eggs in a nest of cold horn.
The kings of the steam-boilers were at that season weeping into their beard-hair. Under the floor of the Great Fire-Spit, which the island-men now name Mount Korra, there lived a worm of red iron and sulfur-dough, whose belly was forty wagons wide. The tablets call him The Great Foot That Shakes the Hearth. When he turned his ribs, the walls of the copper-mills broke like parched melon-husks, and the boiling mud drowned the fat sheep in their pens. The king sent seven score war-men with heavy hammers of cold iron, but the heat of the pit melted the grease of their knees, and they fell down into the sulfur-water like parched frogs.
Then the king’s town-master, having given three bags of dried salt to the water-watchers, spoke: “Let the blind woman of the geode-holes go into the chimney. Let the wind-boy carry the slate of quiet sums. If they do not stop the foot of the worm, the sea will come in and drink our boilers, and our soup will be cold forever.”
Kesh-Elun sat before the hearth of the high forge, where the elemental steam sighed through the brass conduits like a tired heifer. She took the bracers of dragon-claws that had belonged to the fire-slayers of the old kings, which bit with red teeth. She laid them beside the stone eye-frames she had ground out of the great geode that does not make an echo. Then the wind-boy laid upon the stone his river-compass that smelled of wet moss, and the wing-hair of the sky-spirit, and the five-part offering of still glass that had the power to make wild things sit and count their toes.
The woman blew the steam-whistle three times. She said to the smith: “The worm has three hearts. One is of red tallow, which eats the oil of the earth. One is of black basalt, which has no blood. One is of wind, which laughs in the chimney. A single tool cannot bite three different meats; we must make a basket that holds both the cold peak and the hot kettle.”
They melted the things together in the deep pot. It was not done with common charcoal, but with the white breath that comes when the fire-demon is locked in the water-box under ten weights of lead. When the metal became like yellow honey, the blind carver stirred it with a rod of river-stone, listening not with her ears, for the workshop was warded with deaf-runes, but with the bone of her chin pressed against the stone table. When the pot went thrummm like a wasp under a cup, she knew the five spirits had bitten one another’s tails and become one ring.
She hammered the iron into a cap that was like an owl’s skull, but long in the snout. Down the sides she bent the red claws of the dragon, so they gripped her cheek-bones like the fingers of an angry aunt. Over the place where eyes ought to sit, she set the twin geode-slices, cut with forty-nine angles that drink the dark. Upon the forehead she fastened the square slate, setting within it the five round beads of river-glass, equidistant as the five points of the melon-star. Along the left ear-hole she bound the pale wing-hair with nine twists of cold-drawn silver.
When she put the thing upon her thinking-seat, the translation says: Her head became a mountain that has eyes inside its belly.
She did not stumble upon the seven hundred steps of the burning pit. Sor-Tarek held the belt of her coat, but she led him as the ox-lead leads the calf. Through the thick smoke that tasted of burnt fat and brimstone, the geode-eyes showed her the world not in the manner of day-light, but in shapes of warm marrow and cold stone. The cold rocks were gray as dead sheep, but the red worm in the deep was a pillar of white fat that danced like a torch in a wind-tunnel.
The worm smelled the living grease of their thighs. It reared up from the boiling lake, its mouth like the door of a lime-kiln, fringed with teeth of burning flint. “Who walks upon my floor without shoes?” it cried, and the sound broke three water-casks in the town above. “I will eat your water until your skin is like dry leather for a drum!”
Kesh-Elun did not lift a bronze blade, for she carried none. She touched the five-part stone upon her forehead.
The five river-beads began to shine with the quiet white light of the moon-goddess when the mist is on the swamp. The light made no heat, but it threw upon the roof of the cavern a pattern of lines, all square, all even, all separated by the space of one barley-grain. The red worm looked upon the lines. Its wild mind, which had known only the boiling and the breaking of rocks since the great flood, was caught by the straightness. It saw that the first bead was two thumb-widths from the second, and the second was two thumb-widths from the third. It closed its wide furnace-mouth. It bowed its hot snout toward the stone. It began to count with its small, blind nostrils—one, two, three, four, five—and then it must needs begin again, for its beast-wit could not find an end to a ring that has no corner.
“He sits upon the ledger-line,” whispered the wind-boy, whose heart was like a bird beating in a wicker cage. “He counts the beads of the quiet mother.”
“He counts,” said Kesh-Elun through the iron beak of the visor. “Now we must take his footing.”
She tilted her brow. The geode-facets caught the trembling of the mountain’s knees. Through the lithic sight, she did not look at the worm’s belly, but at the four great pillars of basalt upon which the beast rested its fat hips. Three of the pillars were whole, but the fourth had an invisible line of sickness in its center, no wider than the hair of a horse’s tail, where the steam had eaten the salt from the granite.
She invoked the dragon-jaw upon her cheeks. The curved talons flared with the red rage of the old drakes that lived before the seventy and three islands had names. She did not strike with iron; she spat the stored wind-charge that had been caught in the compass-stone.
A needle of white-hot air, smelling of pine-resin and lightning-scabs, flew from the visor’s beak. It made no roar, for the deaf-runes swallowed the tongue of the blast. It hit the tiny hair-line in the fourth pillar.
The granite did not shatter; it slipped sideways, as a pat of butter slips upon a hot griddle. The worm, still counting the fourth and the fifth glass bead, felt the stone drop beneath its left flank. It gave a great bellow of hot tallow, and its fiery tail lashed out, striking the ceiling of the cavern.
Ten thousand cartloads of stone fell down like ripe figs from an orchard.
The boy cried out: “The world is dropping upon our crowns! We shall be flat as dried fish!”
Then Kesh-Elun reached her hand to the pale plume at her temple. The feather of the laughing spirit woke. The falling rocks did not strike their heads; a great round cushion of moss-smelling air, soft as sheep’s wool and light as thistle-seed, rose up around their shoulders. The boulders struck the wind-cushion and rolled aside into the lava-lake, splashing red grease against the walls. The blind woman and the boy did not touch the shaking floor; they floated three cubits above the sulfur-trough, drift-gliding upon the thermal vents like sea-gulls hovering over the wake of the king’s galley.
The worm slipped. Without its fourth pillar, its heavy, molten bulk slid downward into the deep throat of the earth, where the rocks have no names and the water has never seen the sky. As it fell, Kesh-Elun turned the geode-lenses upon the narrow throat behind it. She reached out with the dragon-heat of the mandibles and fused the split stone together, sealing the door with a crust of black glass three cubits thick, while the compass-runes locked the heading so the beast could never find the upward chimney again.
When the two came up the seven hundred stairs into the city of the boilers, the sun was sitting upon the edge of the western sea like an orange in a copper bowl. The townsmen fell upon their bellies, for the woman’s visor was still smoking with the scent of roasted granite and sweet pine-needles, and her eyes were hidden behind the shimmering purple facets that had looked upon the earth’s marrow.
The king offered to Kesh-Elun fifty carts of grain, nine fat bulls, and a seat at his right knee upon an ivory bench.
The carver pushed the articulated geode-lenses up into the frame of dark iron. Her unseeing eyes were white and still, like two stones taken from a mountain brook.
“Keep your grain for the bull-calves, old man,” she said, and her voice sounded like river-shingle rolling under a boat’s keel. “A head that carries five winds and a burning stove has no room for your ivory stool. See that your miners dig straight, and do not prick the basalt where the rock-lice sleep, or the worm will wake, and my iron cap will not be here to do your counting.”
She walked away into the high mist toward the basalt spires. The wind-boy followed her, his boots making no sound upon the gravel, for the plume upon the visor still breathed upon their heels, making them light as thistle-down. The legends of the seventy and three islands say that the visor was passed down from carver to surveyor for four hundred turnings of the seasons, until it was placed within a stone box beneath the High Cloud Spire, where it waits for a pathfinder whose eyes are not deceived by the colors of the grass.
The moral of the story is: The mountain is not conquered by the loud hammer that breaks its teeth, but by the quiet eye that reads the crack, the balanced hand that stays the beast, and the light foot that knows how to step upon the breath of the wind.
