Lore
The Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932 is a singular artifact created through a high-tier convergence ritual on the northern dirt-plates of Saṃsāra. It was commissioned by a master infiltrator who served as a “First-Watch” for the Veiled Attendants, seeking to combine the absolute silence of the grave with the kinetic vigilance of the sky-islands. By bonding the lead of ancient coffins with the patterned pelt of a Numerian Scroll-Beast and the stiff feathers of a sea-eagle, the crafter forged an object that manages not only physical items but the wearer’s very existence within the flow of time and space. Legend claims the first wearer utilized the item to audit the treasury of a Shadow-Master while standing undetected in the center of a crowded throne room.
Description
This item is a masterfully constructed, thigh-high boot-pouch hybrid. The exterior is fashioned from the ochre Numerian Scroll-Beast pelt, displaying natural ledger-line patterns that seem to shift and realign whenever the wearer moves. A heavy, lead-grey brooch in the shape of a closed eye is pinned to the reinforced leather cuff, its central bone sliver glowing with a faint, cold light. The heel and shin are braced with silver-etched ivory and twelve wind-resistant sea-eagle feathers that flare outward during movement. Despite its complex construction, it is a single physical object that feels unnaturally light and emits a constant, low-frequency hum of kinetic energy.
Stats
- Tier: 4
- Armor Check (AC): +12 (Limited to 3 per item level)
- Item HP: 120 + (Avatar’s Maximum Hit Points)
- Resilience: 10
- Attunement: Ritual (10 minutes)
Skills Gained While Openly Worn
- Apex Ghosting: The avatar gains a +8 bonus to all Stealth and Prowl checks.
- Meticulous Sentry: The wearer is considered trained in Perception and Insight, receiving a +4 bonus to detecting hidden traps or deceptions.
- Kinetic Sortation: The wearer can retrieve any small item from their inventory as a free action without looking.
Passives Magic
- The Eagle’s Silent Perimeter: The avatar’s field of vision expands to 270 degrees via silver reflections on the feathers. Footsteps are completely muffled, and the avatar is immune to surprise attacks from non-magical sources.
- A Face in the Ledger: Strangers must succeed on a DC 60 Wisdom (Perception) check to recall the wearer’s appearance after one hour. Surface thoughts are replaced by the mental static of a thousand tallying numbers, shielding against basic mind-reading.
- Seismic Inventory Awareness: While standing still, the avatar gains Tremorsense (30 feet) and a constant mental “awareness” of every item on their person and its exact condition.
- Inherent Preservation of Order: Small items in the wearer’s possession cannot be accidentally lost, spilled, or crushed, even during violent falls or atmospheric Snap-Freezes.
Active Magics
- Vigilant Stillness (5/Day): As an action, the wearer can suppress all life signs for 10 minutes, appearing as an inanimate statue. During this time, they gain a pulse of “Truth-Light” (60-foot radius) that outlines all hidden objects and magical residue in silver.
- The Predator’s Instant Audit (3/Day): By executing a sharp fan-snap motion with the boot’s feathers, the avatar designates a target. For 1 hour, they know the target’s exact distance and can “tally” the target’s physical weaknesses, gaining advantage on the next attack.
- Path of the Forgotten Step (1/Day): The wearer can phase through a solid object up to 5 feet thick as a move action. For 10 minutes following this, the avatar leaves behind no spiritual traces, scent, or footprints.

Tactical Integrity and Restoration Protocols
Targeting the Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932
In the specialized combat of Saṃsāra, a foe may attempt to strike the artifact directly to disable its potent infiltration and detection capabilities. To successfully hit the Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932, an attacker must exceed a specialized Armor Check (AC) threshold:
- Targeted Item AC: Avatar’s AC + 4 (Tier Level) + 4d10 (Tier Dice Roll) + 12 (Base Item AC).
If an attack meets or exceeds this total, the item is deactivated and immediately becomes unattuned. All passive benefits, such as the muffled footsteps and expanded field of vision, cease to function. Because the item serves as a primary magical focus for the wearer’s movements, it remains inert until a 10-minute ritual attunement is completed by the avatar.
Item Hit Points and Physical Breach
The physical durability of the artifact is represented by its Item HP. For this Tier 4 object, the health pool is calculated as:
- Item HP: 120 + (Avatar’s Maximum Hit Points).
The state of the item depends on its remaining health:
- Broken: If the item’s HP is reduced to 60 or less (half of its total resilience pool), it is considered Broken. In this state, its magical properties cannot be activated, and the internal compartments of the pouch may become inaccessible.
- Destroyed: If the item reaches 0 HP, it is physically destroyed. It dissolves into its component parts: lead slag, sea-eagle quills, mammoth ivory fragments, and a shredded Scroll-Beast pelt.
Repairing the Artifact
If the item is damaged or rendered Broken, it must be repaired before it can be attuned or used again.
- Expert Physical Repair: A master leatherworker or a specialized northern outfitter can perform mundane repairs during downtime. This requires materials of Tier 4 quality, such as shadow-deer hide or high-purity silver wire.
- Magical Re-Imprinting: Because the item relies on kinetic memory and necromantic silence, a Tier 4 Enchanter or an initiate of the Veiled Attendants must perform a ritual to re-stabilize the “Seismic Heartbeat” and the “Muffled Aura.”
- Self-Restoration: If the item is merely deactivated (unattuned) but has more than half its HP, the ritual attunement is sufficient to restore magic. However, the physical Item HP does not replenish on its own and requires manual repair to return to the 120 + Base maximum.
Acquisition and High-Tier Commerce
Methods of Obtaining the Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932
Acquiring an artifact of Tier 4 caliber requires more than simple currency; it necessitates navigating the most dangerous and exclusive social circles of Saṃsāra.
- The Veiled Audit Quest: A character may be commissioned by the Veiled Attendants to perform a “Silent Audit” of a corrupted high-tier official. Success in this mission, involving the retrieval of hidden ledgers without a single casualty, may result in the guild bestowing the Ledger-Walk as a symbol of mastery.
- Salvage from Northern Sky-Ruins: These boots were occasionally forged for the “Commanding Watch” of the great floating fortresses of the North. An explorer venturing into a Tier 4 “Deathly Area” within a collapsed sky-island might find the item within a kinetic-lock vault, still humming with the resonance of its last owner.
- The Ritual of Four-Fold Silence: A master crafter can merge the original four items during a unique astronomical event—such as when the shadow of Saṃsāra falls directly upon the largest storm-eye of VaporSphere. This requires the character to have reached Tier 4 and to possess a prime Numerian Scroll-Beast pelt.
Retail and Exchange Environments
In Saṃsāra, Tier 4 items are rarely seen on a shelf. They are treated as sovereign-class assets.
- The Ledger-Master’s Private Atelier:
- Location: Deep within the administrative districts of the megacity Astran.
- Description: A quiet, scentless workshop where the floor is covered in sound-dampening moss. The artisan deals exclusively with high-tier spies and treasurers.
- How it is Traded: The item is bought via a “Letter of Credit” from the World Bank. The buyer must undergo a 24-hour observation period to ensure they do not suffer from “The Pain” when holding the boots.
- Cost: 40,000 Gold (or 4,000 Platinum).
- The First-Watch Outpost (Frontier High-Tier):
- Location: The highest peaks of the Zephyrstone Islands.
- Description: A fortified stone outpost overlooking the Long Dark. The merchants here are retired sentinels who only sell to those they deem “Vigilant.”
- How it is Traded: The transaction is often a mix of coin and service. A buyer might pay a reduced rate if they agree to serve a one-month watch on the precipice.
- Cost: 35,000 Gold plus a Tier 4 heroic service.
- The Shadows of Nexus (Black Market):
- Location: An underwater maintenance hub beneath a port city.
- Description: A damp, lightless market where transactions are made using True Names or Soul Shards as collateral.
- How it is Traded: This is a “Sellers’ Market.” The item is sold “as is,” with the risk that it may have a Hunter’s Mark already attached to it.
- Cost: 6,500 Platinum.
- World Bank Sovereign Asset Liquidation:
- Location: Central World Bank branches.
- Description: A sterile, high-security room where confiscated gear is sold to recoup national debts.
- How it is Traded: Sealed-bid auctions are the standard. The price is non-negotiable once the hammer falls.
- Cost: 50,000 Gold (Standard Tier 4 valuation).
Selling the Artifact
Selling the Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932 is difficult because of its niche utility. Most general vendors will lack the 30,000+ gold required to buy it. A seller must locate a high-level Guild Master of the Scribes or a Spymaster for a local Monarchy. These NPCs will typically offer 40% to 50% of the item’s valuation in gold, or 75% if the payment is taken in rare Tier 4 materials or Magic Crystals. Selling this item to a Black Market fixer will yield a quick 15,000 Gold, but may result in the seller being “marked” by the Veiled Attendants for distributing their secret technology.
Environmental Tactical Manifestations: Defense and Offense
The Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932 is a masterpiece of sensory dominance and structural invisibility. Its roleplay reflects a transition from a mere mortal to an apex predator of information and silence, allowing the wearer to navigate the most “High-Liability” zones of Saṃsāra with the cold precision of a ledger-master.
Environment: The High-Altitude Sky-Islands (Northern White-Out)
In the blinding blizzards and thin air of the North, the item’s avian and kinetic roots grant the wearer total environmental mastery.
- Defensive Roleplay: During a catastrophic “Snap-Freeze,” a pack of Frost-Worms emerges from the permafrost to ambush the party. The wearer initiates the Eagle-Step. While their allies are blinded by the snow, the wearer’s field of vision expands to 270 degrees. They narrate how the silver-etched feathers on their boots act as mirrors, catching the heat-ghost of a worm lunging from behind. The wearer sidesteps with Grandmaster Agility, the Seismic Heartbeat in their heels alerting them to the worm’s subterranean path before it even breaks the surface.
- Offensive Roleplay: To eliminate a sentry guarding a narrow ice-bridge, the wearer utilizes The Predator’s Instant Audit. They snap the boot-feathers with a whip-like sound, “tallying” the sentry’s armor gaps. The roleplay describes the wearer moving across the bridge in a blur of motion; because of the Silent Movement and Path of the Forgotten Step, they leave no footprints in the fresh snow. They strike the sentry’s documented weakness and continue past, the sentry never having heard a single footfall or sensed a spiritual presence.
Environment: The Megacity of Astran (Urban Infiltration)
In the crowded, steam-shrouded streets and fortified vaults of the capital, the item turns the wearer into a “Ghost in the Ledger.”
- Defensive Roleplay: While being pursued by a squad of World Bank Enforcers through a crowded bazaar, the wearer leans into A Face in the Ledger. They do not run; they walk at a rhythmic, measured pace. The roleplay emphasizes how the Scroll-Beast pelt absorbs the attention of the guards. Passersby look at the wearer and immediately forget their features. When the enforcers corner the wearer in an alley, the wearer activates Vigilant Stillness. They become an inanimate, cold statue. The enforcers, using life-detection spells, see only a “null-signature” and a mundane piece of street art, moving past the “corpse” to continue their search elsewhere.
- Offensive Roleplay: The wearer must infiltrate a high-security counting house to “audit” (steal) a specific soul-gem. They use Kinetic Sortation to retrieve a set of master-keys from their boot-pouch instantly and without looking. Upon reaching the magically-warded vault door, they utilize Path of the Forgotten Step to phase directly through the five-foot-thick lead-lined wall. Inside, the Inherent Preservation of Order ensures that as they shove dozens of small, volatile reagents into their pouch, nothing breaks or jumbles, allowing for a swift, perfectly organized exit.
Environment: Ancient Necropolis (Undead and Spirits)
In the “Deathly Areas” where the Veiled Attendants hold sway, the necromantic lead and bone components of the item provide a sovereign defense.
- Defensive Roleplay: Navigating a tomb guarded by spectral “Grave-Bound” sentinels, the wearer activates the Path of the Forgotten Step. For ten minutes, they become “spiritually invisible.” The roleplay describes the ghosts drifting past the wearer, perceiving them as nothing more than a piece of ancient furniture or a stone pillar. The Muffled Aura ensures that the spiritual “scent” of the wearer’s living soul is entirely inhaled by the lead-grey brooch, preventing the spirits from entering a state of “Agitated Hunger.”
- Offensive Roleplay: Confronting a Lich-Priest within its inner sanctum, the wearer uses Vigilant Stillness to scan the room. A pulse of Truth-Light erupts from the closed-eye brooch, revealing the hidden phylactery glowing behind a false wall. While the Lich is focused on the party’s more “vocal” members, the wearer uses the Seismic Heartbeat to track the Lich’s exact movements through the floor vibrations. They time their strike for the exact moment the Lich’s kinetic shield fluctuates, delivering a decisive blow informed by the “Instant Audit” of the target’s defensive cycle.
Environment: Naval Combat (The Vigilant Sea)
On the creaking wooden decks of a ship or within the damp holds of a merchant vessel, the item provides unparalleled situational awareness.
- Defensive Roleplay: During a night-time boarding action, an enemy assassin attempts to drop from the rigging onto the wearer. The wearer’s Eagle’s Peripheral catches the glint of a blade in the silver feathers. The roleplay describes a fluid, avian-like head tilt followed by a silent repositioning. The assassin hits the deck where the wearer stood a heartbeat before. Because the wearer’s footsteps are completely silenced, the assassin cannot even use the sound of the wearer’s landing to re-orient themselves in the dark.
- Offensive Roleplay: To sabotage an enemy ship’s rudder, the wearer phases through the hull using Path of the Forgotten Step. Once inside the steering gear room, they use Meticulous Sentry to instantly identify the mechanical trip-wires set by the crew. They roleplay the “tallying” of the gears, removing exactly three small pins. The Inherent Preservation of Order ensures the pins stay organized in their pouch for later re-insertion, while the ship is left drifting and defenseless on the high-liability waves.

Perception of Activation:
User’s Perspective
- Sight: Upon activation, the world undergoes a violent, desaturated expansion. The visual field widens to a 270-degree panorama, but colors bleed into grey and sepia tones. The “ledger lines” on the fur pulse with a rhythmic, bioluminescent silver, while the closed-eye brooch flares with a cold, violet light.
- Sound: Ambient noise is instantly vacuumed away, replaced by a profound, hollow silence. Within this silence, the “Keeper’s Serenade” begins—a harmonized, choral humming that resonates through the wearer’s leg bones. Every ten steps, a sharp, whip-like crack echoes only in the wearer’s mind.
- Touch: A sensation of dry, absolute cold travels from the foot to the hip. The avatar feels preternaturally light, as if gravity has lost its grip. The textured pelt feels like smooth, moving stone against the skin, and the ivory heel hums with a constant, high-frequency vibration.
- Smell: A sharp scent of ionized ozone and damp crypt-dust fills the sinuses, clearing the head but leaving a faint, mineral-like aftertaste on the back of the throat.
- Taste: A distinct metallic tang, similar to biting on a lead coin or a silver wire, lingers on the tongue throughout the duration of the active state.
Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: To an onlooker, the wearer’s form begins to flicker like a corrupted image. The sea-eagle feathers flare out and strobe with a pale light that catches and holds shadows. The wearer’s face becomes a nondescript blur, appearing average and uninteresting, as if the eye refuses to settle on their features.
- Sound: The observer hears nothing—not even the sound of the wearer’s movement across gravel or wood. When the “Truth-Light” is released, a localized ripple of translucent silver energy washes over the room with a sound like a distant, heavy door closing.
- Extra-Sensory (Mind’s Eye): A telepath or aura-reader perceives a “null-spot” in reality. The space the wearer occupies feels like a silent, empty counting-house where information goes to be archived and forgotten.
Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Atmospheric Sonar: The wearer perceives sound as tactile “pokes” or pressure shifts against their skin, allowing them to map the room even with their eyes closed.
- Seismic Heartbeat: Through the ivory bracing, the wearer “tastes” the weight and density of objects on the ground. They can differentiate between the armored clank of a guard and the scurry of a vermin by the frequency of the floor’s vibration.
- Temporal Audit: During phasing, time appears to slow. The wearer perceives the “ledger” of the world’s movements—the exact trajectory of a falling drop of water or the mechanical cycle of a swinging blade—allowing for a perfectly timed passage.
Positives
- Total Anonymity: The combined necromantic and organizational magic ensures the wearer is functionally invisible to memory. Even if spotted, the brain of the observer discards the event as unremarkable background data.
- Hyper-Efficiency: The kinetic memory of the feathers and the “Instant Audit” allow the wearer to act with zero fumbling, retrieving tools or striking weaknesses with absolute mathematical certainty.
- Mental Fortress: The influx of “ledger data” and mental static provides a total shield against fear, charms, and telepathic intrusions.
Negatives
- Cognitive Tax: When the activation ends, the sudden snap back to a narrow human field of vision causes “Tunnel-Nausea” and severe vertigo. The wearer often twitches their head in sharp, avian movements involuntarily for several minutes.
- Sensory Isolation: The profound deafness and desaturated vision can lead to depersonalization, making it difficult for the user to gauge social cues or hear emergency warnings from allies.
- Inertial Snap: If phasing is used to move through a thick object, the exit into physical reality causes a “Psychic Whiplash,” resulting in a persistent, high-pitched ringing in the ears that drowns out human speech.
The Rite of the Vigilant Auditor’s Convergence
Items Merged
- Necromancy 31 of the Grave Silent Brooch (Tier 1)
- Accountant’s Orderly Pouch 601 (Tier 1)
- Inuit 412 of the Vigilant Sea Eagle Fan (Tier 1)
- Silent Boots (Tier 1)
Additional Materials Needed
- 4 Tier 4 Magic Crystals: To provide the resonance needed to elevate the base components to Tier 4 status.
- 1 Vial of Shadow-Lacquer: Mixed with pulverized obsidian and bioluminescent gland oil.
- 12 High-Altitude Sea-Eagle Primary Feathers: Freshly harvested to reinforce the existing fan structure.
- 1 Strip of Prime Numerian Scroll-Beast Pelt: For the seamless integration of the boot-cuff and pouch exterior.
- 1 Pint of Moonlit Water: Collected during a solar eclipse to temper the lead and ivory.
- Cured Caribou Sinew: For high-tensile stitching that carries kinetic memory.
Tools Required
- Darkwood Loom: Specifically made of ironwood, utilized in a light-locked environment.
- Seismic Tuning Fork: Tuned to the “Heartbeat of the Earth” to calibrate the haptic feedback.
- Obsidian Scribing Stylus: For etching the internal null-runes into the coffin-lead.
- Silver-Tipped Engraving Needle: For the precise inlay of silver wire into the mammoth ivory.
- Chamber of Absolute Stillness: A magically soundproofed room required for the imbuement of the “Muffled Aura.”
Skill Requirements
- Expert Leatherworking (20+ Ranks): To merge the Scroll-Beast pelt and the Silent Boots into a singular, thigh-high physical structure.
- Advanced Enchanting (20+ Ranks): To bind the “Keeper’s Serenade” and the “Truth-Light” pulse into the leaden eye.
- Initiate Necromancy (Tier 4): Understanding the spiritual inertia required to suppress life signs and vanish from memory.
- Trained Performance (Eagle-Eye Dance): Necessary to imprint the kinetic radar functions into the feathers.
- Master of Stealth (Tier 4): To ensure the item’s spiritual “scent” is perfectly muted.
Crafting Steps
- The Foundation of Lead and Bone: Dismantle the Grave Silent Brooch. Re-smelt the coffin-lead in the Chamber of Absolute Stillness. While the metal is cooling but malleable, reset the Shard of the Unmarked into a new, larger bezel that will serve as the anchor point for the boot’s cuff.
- The Kinetic Alignment: Strip the Inuit 412 Fan of its feathers. Using the Silver-Tipped Needle, engrave the combined “Eagle’s Peripheral” and “Seismic Heartbeat” runes into the Silent Boots’ ivory heel-bracing. Inlay these with silver wire and the Magic Crystals.
- The Pouch Integration: Carefully deconstruct the Orderly Pouch 601. Using the Cured Caribou Sinew, stitch the Scroll-Beast pelt directly onto the outer lateral side of the boot. The “ledger lines” of the pelt must align perfectly with the silver runes on the heel to ensure the Mental Inventory Recall functions.
- The Feather Weaving: Attach the twelve fresh Sea-Eagle Feathers in a radial arc around the calf and ankle of the boot. Use the Darkwood Loom to weave the Nightweave Silk (from the boots) between the feathers, creating the specialized “whip-snap” structure required for the Vigilant Snap-Flare.
- The Imbuement of Silence: Coat the entire assembly in the Shadow-Lacquer mixed with Crypt-Dust. The crafter must then perform the “Eagle-Step” dance for four consecutive hours in total silence. Every twelve steps, they must snap the boot’s feathers and focus on the concept of a “Forgotten Auditor.”
- The Eclipse Tempering: Submerge the completed Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932 in the Moonlit Water at the precise moment of a high-altitude “Snap-Freeze.” This locks the disparate Tier 1 properties into a single physical object of Tier 4 potency. The item is complete when the “ledger lines” on the fur begin to pulse with a faint, silvery, rhythmic light.
Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932 and Man of Quiet-Counting
This is the telling from the flat-rocks of the very-long-ago, which were pulled from the wet-dirt and cleaned by the scholars who have bad eyes. The words on the rock are bent and the meanings are perhaps not completely straight because the language is from the time before the sky-dirt stopped moving. It speaks of the Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932, though the rock-scratches call it the One-Leg-Tube of the Secret Counter.
In the time of the shivering-cold, there was a man who lived in the shadows of the high-rocks. The scratches say his name was perhaps Oron, or perhaps it means He-Who-Looks-At-Papers. Oron was a man of the Quiet-Undertakers, the ones who put the dead in the ground without making a fuss. Oron loved the numbers and the placing of small things into small boxes, but he did not love the eyes of other men upon him. He wished to be a shadow that could also do mathematics.
In this time, a great evil was done by the Bloated-Toad-King who lived in the water-city. The Bloated-Toad-King stole all the breathing-stones from the people of the dirt-plates. He locked them in a room of heavy iron and put angry ghost-men to watch the door. The people cried because without the breathing-stones, their fires would not burn the cold away.
Oron heard the crying. He decided he must do an audit of the Bloated-Toad-King’s room of heavy iron. But Oron was just a man. To steal from the angry ghost-men, he needed the quiet-shoes to make no sound. He needed the counting-beast-skin-bag to hold the breathing-stones in perfect separation. He needed the loud-bird-fan to see the hidden fire-wires. And he needed the heavy-dead-eye-pin to make the ghost-men forget his face.
Oron put on the quiet-shoes. He put the counting-bag on his shoulder. He held the loud-bird-fan in his hand. He pinned the heavy-dead-eye to his chest. But the rocks say Oron fell over. He was carrying too many things. The magic of the four things fought with each other. They took up too many places on his body. He was clumsy and he made the sound of a dropping pot.
Oron said to the howling-air, “The walking-meat has only two hands and two legs. Four magics are too many magics for the slots of the body.”
So, Oron went to the dark-loom in the deepest cave. He took the boiling water of the nothingness. He melted the quiet-shoes and the counting-beast-skin-bag and the loud-bird-fan and the heavy-dead-eye-pin. He chanted the song of the Keeper while the water bubbled. He sewed the animal-hair-skin to the leather of the shoe. He stuck the bone-eye on the top-part of the leather. He attached the stiff-bird-hairs to the sides of the calf.
The magic of the melting did a great and terrible thing. It ate the four items and spat out exactly one physical-thing. It was a single leg-covering. It was not a group of things tied together with string. It was one heavy leg-tube that went up to the thigh. Because it was one single physical object, Oron only had to put his leg into one hole. It covered only one slot of his body-places. The rocks are very clear about this: it was one item, the Vigil’s Ledger-Walk 932.
Oron put the single-leg-tube on his foot. Instantly, his ears stopped hearing the wind. His eyes saw the world in the colors of old ash. The bone-eye drank his soul-smell. He felt the ground-shaking with his heel. He walked with the walking of a man who does not want to be heard making the sounds of walking.
He journeyed to the water-city of the Bloated-Toad-King. He stood before the room of heavy iron. The iron was five man-hands thick. Oron did not care. He used the magic of the forgotten-step. He pushed his body into the iron. The iron felt like cold mist. He walked through the wall and left no footprints and no soul-grease behind.
Inside, the angry ghost-men floated. Their eyes were burning coals. Oron stood like a piece of dead wood. He used the magic of the grave-stillness. His heart stopped beating its drum. His breath stopped making the air warm. The heavy-dead-eye on his boot-cuff swallowed his presence. The angry ghost-men looked at him. Their ghost-brains said, “This is a very boring smudge of grey dirt. It is not worth looking at.” They floated away. Oron was a nobody.
Oron walked to the center of the room. He felt the humming in his heel. He knew there were traps. He snapped the stiff-bird-hairs on his boot with a loud cracking sound that only he could hear. A ripple of silver truth-light washed over the floor. It showed the hidden pressure-plates glowing like sick moons. Oron did the bird-step-dance over the plates. He did not touch a single one.
He found the box of breathing-stones. He needed to put them away very fast. He opened the flap of the animal-hair-skin on his thigh. He dropped the breathing-stones inside. The magic of the counting-beast took them. The stones did not touch each other. They did not make a clinking noise. They rested in perfect, unseen compartments. Oron did not need to use his brain-numbers to count them. The leg-tube told his brain that he had exactly eight-tens and four stones.
Suddenly, the heavy door opened. The Bloated-Toad-King entered to look at his stolen things. He saw Oron. Oron was stuck. Oron did the rapid-bird-head-tilt. He snapped the feathers on his leg-tube again. The magic of the predator-audit locked onto the Bloated-Toad-King. Oron saw the King’s weak-stomach and the soft-spot behind his knee.
But Oron did not strike. He was a man of counting, not a man of stabbing. He simply faded into the grey vision. He walked backward through the solid stone wall of the chamber.
The Bloated-Toad-King yelled for his guards. He pointed at the wall. “A thief!” he screamed. “A thief took my stones!”
The guards asked, “What did the thief look like, Great King?”
The Bloated-Toad-King opened his mouth to speak. But the magic of the unremembered-face was already eating his memory. He tried to think of Oron’s eyes, but he only saw grey fog. He tried to think of Oron’s clothes, but he only remembered the smell of old dirt. “He looked like… he looked like a shadow that forgot how to be a person,” the King said. The guards were very confused. They could not hunt a shadow that forgot how to be a person.
Oron walked back to the high-rocks. He walked through the blizzards, but the leg-tube kept him warm and told him where the ice-worms were hiding. He gave the breathing-stones back to the crying people. The people tried to thank him, but as soon as he turned around, they forgot his name and the shape of his nose. Oron went back to his deep cave. He sat in the quiet silence, wearing his single physical object that took only one slot, and he was happy because all his things were perfectly sorted and no one was looking at him.
Moral of the Story: True counting is done in the absolute silence of the dirt, and one heavy boot that holds the whole world is better than four things that make you fall over. Furthermore, if you are completely boring and empty, the monsters of the world will simply walk past you to find someone who makes more noise.
