Lore
In a shadowed eclipse where three moons veiled the sun and a comet’s tail scratched the veil between realms, a Lumihive guardian bearing the Mantle of Shadows sought the Astrofeng Canticle to guide her through the twilight realm’s endless dusk. There, amid Dreamtime echoes of ancestral strife, she encountered a totem of compacted soil and bark pulsing with primordial ire. As the guardian played the Canticle’s seven strings under the eclipse’s breath, the mantle’s ethereal threads unraveled into twilight mist, weaving into the compass-lyre while the Dreamweaver’s bark crumbled into agitated dust that coated the silver strings. The crystal songbird swallowed the discord, its wings darkening to shadow as the totem’s grievance fused with celestial harmony. What emerged was a single artifact born of guided paths twisted by shadow and fueled by unending ancestral conflict—a veil that sings not of harmony but of the discord hidden within every destined road.
Description
A flowing cloak of midnight-black ethereal fabric that shifts like living shadow, embroidered with crawling celestial runes along its edges that flicker between star-maps and agitated ancestral markings. At the throat clasp sits a palm-sized circular frame of blackened sandalwood holding seven darkened silver strings across a twilight-veiled soundboard, where a crystal songbird perches with wings of solidified shadow instead of starlight. When worn, faint discordant whispers emanate from the strings, and the cloak constantly trails wisps of agitated twilight that absorb light and amplify tension. The entire garment weighs no more than a light cloak yet feels heavy with unresolved grievances.

Passive Magics (all always active while attuned)
- Shadowed Qi Alignment – Advantage on Stealth, Survival, Navigation, and emotional manipulation checks; you always know the direction of greatest hidden tension or unresolved conflict.
- Discordant Starlit Harmony – You and allies within 30 ft gain temporary hit points equal to half the number of visible celestial bodies (minimum 5, maximum 30), but nearby creatures feel subtle agitation (-1 to social harmony checks).
- Twilight Astral Compass – Cannot become lost; automatically sense hidden paths, secret doors, and emotional weaknesses in others within 60 ft.
- Echoing Veil – In dim light or darkness, gain partial concealment (attacks against you have -2 or disadvantage); light-based detection suffers disadvantage.
Active Magics (choose one per turn unless noted)
- Pathfinder’s Discord (1/long rest) – As an action, play the shadowed strings: for 10 minutes reveal hidden paths/ley lines/qi nodes within 120 ft while sowing minor discord (nearby creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom saves against agitation effects).
- Ancestor’s Shadowed Ire (1/day) – Activate a 30-foot radius wave of aggravation and shadow: creatures must succeed on Wisdom save (DC 17) or suffer disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks for 1 minute due to heightened tension and partial obscurement.
- Dream of Veiled Discord (1/week) – Embed a grievance laced with twilight illusion in a sleeping target within 60 ft: upon waking, they pursue the grievance aggressively while perceiving allies as faintly shadowed threats (duration 1 day, save ends).
- Celestial Shadow Refraction (1/long rest) – Shift a minor celestial event within the next lunar cycle by up to 3 days while cloaking an area in twilight shadows (30-ft radius dim light becomes darkness, normal light becomes dim) for 1 hour.
- Lucky Shadow Step (4 charges, regain 1d4 at dusk) – Bonus action: expend 1 charge to teleport up to speed (including vertically), passing through barriers thinner than 5 ft, leaving a trail of discordant whispers that impose -2 to Perception for 1 round on nearby creatures.
Specific slot
Worn item (occupies only the Armor/Cloak slot as a single hooded mantle)
The Astrofeng Veil 472 of Discordant Whispers, as a singular tier 4 physical object forged through the magical merging of the tier 2 Astrofeng Canticle 2819, the tier 1 Mantle of Shadows, and the tier 1 Dreamweaver 93 of Echoing Ire, possesses 160 item hit points to reflect its elevated durability from the fusion process compressing celestial prophecy, twilight stealth, and dreamtime aggravation into one unified form far surpassing the original components which might have individually held around 40 for the tier 2 and 25-30 each for the tier 1 items before merging unified them holistically. These hit points represent the collective structural integrity of the ethereal cloak reinforced by the blackened sandalwood frame’s qi-discord resonance, the crystal songbird’s shadowed wings providing ethereal deflection, and the crawling runes’ ancestral ire weaving an agitated barrier lattice, distributed approximately 80 hit points in the cloak’s flowing fabric for handling slashing impacts and light diffusion, 50 in the central clasp-lyre for maintaining projections and whispers, and 30 in the embroidered edges for emotional manipulation pulses, though damage tracks as a single pool since the object cannot be partially dismantled without total destruction.
To disable the item’s magic if targeted directly—such as by a rival shadowmancer hurling discord-rending curses at the worn cloak, a celestial dragon’s radiant breath channeled specifically into the songbird clasp during an eclipse skirmish, or a dreamtime spirit’s ire backlash disrupting the runes amid a grief-infused ritual—the attacker must overcome all 160 current item hit points through accumulated damage. This targeting demands precise intent and often a successful attack roll against the item’s AC of 22 (derived from its finesse properties, twilight weave imposing disadvantage on attacks without shadow or discord affinity, and constant wisps creating partial concealment), or a magical effect specifying object targeting like a focused eclipse shatter pulse, dream grievance overload, or mantle-piercing divination spike. The item exhibits resistances and immunities to extend engagements: resistance to slashing, piercing, bludgeoning, necrotic, psychic, force, and poison damage from any source due to its shadow-discord composition and ancestral veil; vulnerability to radiant and thunder damage by 50% as the celestial elements recoil from purifying light and harmonious vibrations disrupting ire; full immunity to cold, lightning, fire, and acid because the twilight mantle neutralizes elemental incursions while dreamweaver soil scatters invasive waves and the lyre’s strings absorb sonic disruptions. Non-magical mundane weapons deal half damage rounded down to the item, emphasizing Saṃsāra’s high magic where such fused gear endures primitive assaults but yields to specialized anti-shadow armaments, eclipse-forged rhodium blades, or high-tier radiant dream banishers.
Once reduced to 0 hit points, the item’s magic fully deactivates: all passive magics (Shadowed Qi Alignment, Discordant Starlit Harmony, Twilight Astral Compass, Echoing Veil) immediately cease, holographic projections and whispers vanish, the songbird dims to inert crystal, and active magics (Pathfinder’s Discord, Ancestor’s Shadowed Ire, Dream of Veiled Discord, Celestial Shadow Refraction, Lucky Shadow Step) become unavailable until repaired, leaving only the base cloak stats of 2 lbs weight, finesse properties for checks, and versatile wear as hooded mantle, now a mundane garment prone to tearing if used aggressively in combat or travel. The fabric dulls to ragged twilight tatters with frayed runes, the clasp-lyre falls silent and heavy without resonance, and the edges lose their crawling animation, rendering it useless for stealth or manipulation while still occupying the Armor/Cloak slot, and while attuned the wearer might hear faint unresolved echoes urging futile activations but no mechanical benefits persist.
Repairing the Astrofeng Veil 472 of Discordant Whispers requires a multi-stage ritual conducted by a master artisan-gestalt in a twilight realm nexus or dreamtime eclipse site in Saṃsāra, such as veiled portals in vanishing islands during solar eclipses or subterranean Lumihive hives blending shadow rites with ancestral soil reconnection, spanning 48 hours of uninterrupted work divided into phases: first, a 8-hour cleansing where the damaged item is immersed in agitated dreamtime soil mixed with pure qi essence from ley nodes (sourced from sacred grounds or Dreamtime Trees, costing 500 platinum) to expel absorbed hostile shadows and restore the ire baseline while diffusing twilight mists; second, a 16-hour reforging in a steam-powered shadow forge fueled by elemental fire-water infused with eclipse-star tears, where the artisan reweaves frayed ethereal threads using fresh Dreamtime Tree bark and compacted soil (harvested during ire rituals, valued at 800 platinum) while inscribing renewed crawling runes with nightstorm ink blended from conflict essence and astral quartz dust (additional 600 platinum for reagents); third, a 12-hour calibration phase employing a holographic astral compass device akin to those for canticles but shadowed for discord attunement, channeling the wielder’s own aetheric energy laced with ancestral grievances to rebind the songbird clasp and silver strings; and finally, a 12-hour awakening ritual invoking the merged lore of veiled paths and echoing ire, spilling blood of a twilight beast (like a shadow griffon or discord kraken, obtained via hunt or pact) onto the cloak while reciting Ballad 47 twisted with Dreamweaver chants to reignite the qi-shadow fusion.
Necessary skills encompass Master Cloakweaving (for reshaping ethereal fabric without fracturing the clasp), Expert Shadow Runecraft (to realign flickering runes), Arcane Discord Engineering (to recalibrate whispers and projections), Proficient Dreamtime Agitation (to infuse ire without invoking uncontrollable tensions), Advanced Astrology and Feng Shui (to harmonize celestial shifts with emotional pulses), and Ritual Attunement (to bind under eclipse conditions). Total material cost fluctuates regionally from 1,900 to 2,800 platinum in sellers’ markets, steeper in isolated floating cities or underwater hives due to import via submersibles across endless oceans, with labor fees adding 400-700 platinum based on guild ties—lower in black-market star-thieves’ dens trading ire totems but riskier with potential discord backlash amplifying curses. Success restores all 160 hit points, reactivates every passive and active magic at full potency, and may grant a temporary +2 to Stealth or manipulation checks for the next encounter from overcharged twilight ire if aligned with a comet passage. Failure during repair (on critical crafting fumble, DC 30 skill check) could reduce maximum hit points by 20 permanently, unleash a wild Ancestor’s Shadowed Ire backlash damaging the site and participants, or embed a persistent Dream of Veiled Discord haunting the repairers. In field scenarios, avatars with Mind’s Eye attunement to shadows or discord can enact minor patches channeling personal aetheric ire and a single conflict essence vial (restoring 30 hit points and two passives for 1 hour), but comprehensive restoration mandates the full ritual. Repaired items often manifest subtly enhanced, with whispers revealing forgotten emotional weaknesses aiding future manipulations in courts or wilds.
In the veiled twilight markets of Lumihive enclaves scattered across the subterranean megacities beneath volcanic islands like the Abyssreach Spires, where bioluminescent fungi mimic false stars and steam vents carry whispers of ancestral ire, clandestine shadow-weavers convene in warded hives accessible only through phasing portals activated by dreamtime soil offerings. These gatherings, hosted by Lumihive guardians sworn to twilight balance yet tempted by discord’s edge, display the Astrofeng Veil amid totemic relics under illusionary eclipses projected by mana crystals, its blackened strings humming faintly to test buyers’ emotional resilience. Transactions unfold via ritual trials: prospective purchasers must attune a proxy shadow-thread to the veil’s clasp, enduring a simulated Ancestor’s Shadowed Ire wave that sows personal grievances (resisted via Mind’s Eye or emotional fortitude checks), proving worthiness before haggling in coded ancestral tongues. Prices command 3,200 to 5,800 platinum, equivalent to 32,000-58,000 gold from deep-vein forges, inflated during high-magic ebbs when ire pulses stronger; payments blend minted platinum bars etched with celestial runes, vials of conflict essence from Dreamtime groves, or oaths binding the buyer to sabotage rival hives’ qi flows, with overbids from isekai agitators versed in multiversal grudges driving costs higher amid the humid glow of pulley-lit chambers.
Aboard nomadic zeppelins of the Eclipse Nomads—fleets of levitation-sailed behemoths drifting between the 73 island nations during solar eclipses, docking at sky harbors above ports like Vortrex or floating arcologies—the veil surfaces in private discord salons amid steam-heated cabins adorned with barkwoven charms. Nomad captains, often Lumihive hybrids with Dreamweaver attunements, unveil it via holographic astral projections simulating its passives in shadowed combat holograms, requiring buyers to navigate a gauntlet of veiled paths: solving rune puzzles laced with ire whispers while evading illusory shadow griffons conjured by the clasp-songbird. Costs fluctuate with eclipse proximities and ocean magic flows, ranging 2,800 to 5,200 platinum or 28,000-52,000 gold equivalents in rhodium-laced scrip from astral vaults; offsets include griffon fledglings from labyrinth races, alchemical twilight inks reverse-engineered from sunken twilight realm wrecks, or services like seeding discord in enemy admiral’s crews via Dream of Veiled Discord proxies, all while zeppelins evade airship patrols enforcing island trade blockades.
Within corrupt astral temples of the Veilbound Hierarchs, such as the Whispering Spires piercing storm clouds over central isles or veiled cathedrals in dark cave metropolises, high acolytes peddle the Astrofeng Veil as a sanctified shroud during ire eclipses broadcast telepathically to elite devotees. These sanctums, patrolled by shadow-wreathed golems and discord-veiled altars, host shadowed initiations where the item drapes a central effigy, its runes crawling in sync with sacrificial emotional outpourings. Buyers prove devotion through ordeals: enduring a full Ancestor’s Shadowed Ire ritual spilling their grievances into a dreamtime soil basin (must not succumb to imposed disadvantage on Wisdom), or embedding a veiled discord in a bound spirit while reciting twisted Ballad 47. Prices demand 4,000 to 7,200 platinum, or 40,000-72,000 gold from tithe hoards spanning eras, with reductions for pacts entangling the buyer in temple schemes like unraveling rival nations’ celestial alliances via Celestial Shadow Refraction or harvesting Dreamtime bark from monster-guarded wilds; trial failures invoke lingering psychic ripples draining aether until atonement in electrum grievance-vials.
Perilous delves into eclipse-ravaged ruins around dreamtime nexuses—crumbling sky-temples on vanishing atolls like the Fractured Eclipse Isles or comet-scarred craters in jungle-choked wilds—yield the veil as a spectral guardian’s prize, not sold openly but claimed through expeditions chartered by manipulator guilds in trade ports. Consortia equipped with airships, alchemical single-shot firearms, and gestalt shadow-scouts auction recoveries in post-delve feasts within steam-powered pavilions, where survivors bid amid recounts of outwitting ire-haunted golems reenacting ancestral conflicts or navigating Pathfinder’s Discord-revealed collapse paths. Acquisition involves funding or joining delves, overcoming dream-shadow Lumihive echoes and veiled celestial traps; costs equate to shared spoils netting the item for 2,200 to 4,500 platinum in expedition outlays and hazard shares, payable in gold ingots smelted from ruin-scavenged astral mythril or platinum from wraith hoards, with competitive overbids from delving cabals surging during magic surges amplifying loot’s shadowed potency.
Prestigious guilds of Veil Agitators in scholarly metropolises, such as the Discord Domes atop the Jade Meridian spires or floating universities adrift on perpetual twilight winds, orchestrate sealed auctions for fused relics like the Veil in warded amphitheaters where steam gears whir to project multi-angle simulations of its actives sowing chaos in courts. Entry mandates guild sponsorship or shadow attunement proofs, with previews attuning illusionary proxies to feel the discordant whispers and Lucky Shadow Steps. Bidding progresses through rounds of ire-manipulation duels and veiled prophecy contests, losers forfeiting conflict essences; final tallies reach 4,800 to 9,000 platinum, or 48,000-90,000 gold in guild-backed electrum bonds secured by rhodium reserves, bundled with eclipse ritual escorts or griffon mounts for transit across intrigue-plagued seas fraught with political sky-pirates.
Reclusive enclaves on uncharted smaller islands flickering into being during ire eclipses, housing dreamtime hermits and twilight alchemist coteries reachable solely by daring hot air balloon descents or submersible probes through abyssal rifts, barter the veil in ritual circles around communal shadow-nexuses veiled in perpetual dusk. These misty convocations, masked by echoing veils, feature unveilings where actives test on summoned ire-beasts, buyers earning it through joint crafts like quenching fresh bark in shared grievance rites under comet tails. Prices moderate to 2,500 to 4,800 platinum owing to isolation and interdependence, settled in raw platinum nodules dredged from vent-shrouded depths or gold dust panned from ley-infused shadow rivers, exchanges sealed by pacts carved into the cloak’s runes binding against resale betrayals amid islands’ eclipse-vanishing caprices.
Amid endless ocean galleons repurposed as floating discord emporiums by rogue Lumihive traders navigating trade lanes between underwater centers and surface ports, the veil trades in warded cargo holds during solar eclipses shadowed by zeppelin escorts. Captains, bearing Dreamweaver lineages, reveal it amid steam-brewed twilight elixirs and rune projections previewing Shadowed Qi Alignment in naval skirmishes, demanding buyers withstand a micro Dream of Veiled Discord embedding minor grievances (resolved via emotional checks). Costs hover 3,000 to 5,500 platinum, or 30,000-55,000 gold from sea-vaults, offset by kraken-hide reinforcements or alchemical ire distillates from abyssal hunts, with haggling via tales of veiled conquests while evading sahuagin raiders armed with coral firearms.
In the political intrigue hubs of skyscraper metropolises like Aetherhold’s veiled spires, where levitation bridges connect discord parlors overlooking endless oceans, manipulator salons host the veil in private viewings for isekai courtiers and shadow nobles. Access via telepathic invitations tests with passive Discordant Starlit Harmony amplifying tensions; sales seal through veiled pacts shifting celestial omens against rivals. Prices peak at 5,200 to 8,000 platinum amid sellers’ premiums, paid in platinum filigree from high-altitude forges or gold from labyrinth race winnings, bundled with griffon couriers for discreet delivery across island blockades.
In the storm-tossed expanses of the endless ocean between Saṃsāra’s scattered island nations, where massive sailing galleons clash amid towering waves propelled by wind-levitation sails and alchemical cannon fire, the Astrofeng Veil 472 of Discordant Whispers cloaks avatars navigating these chaotic naval battlegrounds. Offensively, the wearer channels Pathfinder’s Discord to strum the shadowed strings, unveiling hidden ley lines snaking through the depths that power enemy kraken-summoning rituals, while sowing minor discord among crew decks causing captains to question orders (disadvantage on Wisdom saves against agitation, fracturing command chains); Ancestor’s Shadowed Ire unleashes a 30-foot radius wave rippling across rain-slick planks, shrouding foes in partial obscurement as heightened tensions erupt into mutinies, with Discordant Starlit Harmony granting the wearer and boarding allies temporary hit points under fleeting star breaks in clouds (up to 15 amid partial skies) to press the assault. Defensively, Echoing Veil merges the cloak with spray shadows for partial concealment against harpoon volleys, Twilight Astral Compass sensing the greatest emotional weakness in the enemy admiral’s ire toward a rival lieutenant to exploit via subtle whispers, while Lucky Shadow Step (multiple charges) teleports the wearer vertically up masts or horizontally across gaps between colliding hulls, trailing debuffing whispers that impose -2 Perception on pursuing boarders, allowing evasion of grapples amid the thunderous crashes.

Perception of Activation:
User’s Perspective:
Sight: The midnight-black ethereal fabric of the cloak erupts into a living void, swallowing ambient light as crawling celestial runes along the edges blaze with agitated crimson-black fire, flickering rapidly between star-maps of doomed constellations and writhing ancestral markings of ancient grudges. The palm-sized blackened sandalwood frame at the throat clasp becomes a window into twilight abyss, the seven darkened silver strings vibrating with visible ripples of shadow that lash outward like tendrils. The crystal songbird spreads wings of solidified shadow that drip liquid darkness, tilting sharply toward the path of greatest discord while trailing faint illusory grievances in the air.
Sound: A haunting seven-note discord rises from the strings, blending the pure chord of celestial harmony with guttural ancestral whispers of unresolved ire and betrayal. The melody fractures into overlapping echoes—distant screams of forgotten conflicts layered over wind-chime temple bells cracking under pressure—building into a low, oppressive hum that vibrates in the bones and sets teeth on edge.
Touch: The cloak becomes weightless yet clings with oppressive heaviness, as if countless unseen hands grasp from within the fabric, pulling toward shadowed choices. Cool twilight breezes alternate with sudden hot surges of ancestral anger against the skin, while the clasp-lyre throbs with discordant pulses that send shivers of agitation up the spine and into the fingertips.
Smell: Sharp ozone of eclipsed starlight mixes with the heavy, damp earthiness of freshly turned grave soil and bitter Dreamtime bark, undercut by acrid smoke of smoldering grudges and faint metallic tang of suppressed tears.
Taste: A bitter, ashen flavor floods the mouth—like biting into charred bark laced with the coppery residue of old blood and the crystalline bite of shattered starlight—lingering unpleasantly and sharpening with each heartbeat.
Extra-sensory:
Discordant Astral-Qi Resonance: A violent torrent of silver-black energy surges through every meridian and attuned item, felt as exhilarating yet nauseating pressure that highlights paths of maximum conflict while amplifying personal unresolved emotions to near-breaking point.
Veiled Destiny Threads: Golden fate threads extending from all nearby beings twist into thorny black vines laced with shadow, brightest along routes promising betrayal or confrontation; sudden overwhelming visions of potential backstabs flood the Mind’s Eye.
Temporal Discord Slip: Time fractures unevenly for 6 seconds—moments of sharpened reaction alternating with brief lags where echoes of ancestral arguments replay, granting bursts of initiative but risking disorientation.
Agitated Harmonic Empathy: Emotional states within 60 feet explode as jagged, blood-red constellations in the mind, revealing intents with brutal clarity while forcing the wearer to feel echoes of others’ ire as physical pain.
Cosmic Ire Intuition: Flawless yet troubling understanding of current celestial alignments reveals not opportunities but inevitable conflicts they will birth; allows one minor retcon framed as “the shadows warned me of this grudge.”
Observer’s Perspective:
Sight: The cloak billows unnaturally as if caught in an unseen storm, fabric turning into writhing shadows that devour light in a 10-foot radius. Runes crawl frantically along edges in crimson-black glow, the clasp-lyre’s strings lash like whips of darkness, and the crystal songbird’s shadowed wings spread wide, dripping liquid void that hisses on contact with air.
Sound: A chilling, fractured melody carries outward—pure celestial notes cracking into ancestral screams and whispers of betrayal—audible up to 300 feet, growing more oppressive nearer the wearer, often causing involuntary shivers or arguments among listeners.
Smell: A wave of damp grave soil, bitter bark, and acrid grudge-smoke rolls outward in a 30-foot sphere, heavy and cloying.
Extra-sensory: An oppressive aura of veiled malice and impending discord radiates, making observers instinctively distrust the wearer and feel their own buried grievances stirring; Mind’s Eye reveals a storm of twisted fate-threads converging on the figure.
Positives:
Overwhelming battlefield presence that shatters enemy morale and coordination.
Perfect revelation of hidden threats, weaknesses, and betrayal paths.
Greatly enhanced stealth and evasion through dynamic shadow manipulation.
Temporary initiative bursts and emotional intelligence for tactical supremacy.
Ability to turn ambient tensions into weapons without direct action.
Negatives:
Activation impossible to conceal—light, sound, and aura announce presence dramatically.
Risk of overwhelming the wearer with amplified personal or absorbed negative emotions.
Allies often affected by passive agitation and whispers, straining group cohesion.
Distinctive sensory markers make tracking trivial for hours afterward.
Prolonged or frequent use risks permanent psychic scars from unrelenting ancestral echoes.
Observers (including potential allies) experience instinctive fear, distrust, or hostility toward the wearer.

Astrofeng Veil Four Hundred Seventy-Two of Discordant Whispers
That Which Weaves Shadowed Paths and Sings Bitter Stars
In the time when moons were not yet named and oceans counted their waves in whispers, before the sky learned to weep comets and the earth to swallow grudges, there lived a veil that was not a veil, a song that was not sung, and a ire that burned without flame. The old scrolls, cracked by frost and comet-fire, speak of a guardian from the Lumihive folk, she who walked between light that blinded and dark that devoured. Her name lost to echoes, called only She-Who-Veiled-The-Stars-And-Dust. Some say she cast no shadow. Some say her shadow had seven tongues, one for each string of the night.
In those days the heavens quarreled like children. Stars tugged one way, shadows tugged another. Rivers flowed upside when the moon laughed. Wanderers perished on straight paths, and rulers perished on crooked ones that came too soon.
She-Who-Veiled-The-Stars-And-Dust bore three burdens only. One was a compass of black wood that spun without breath and pointed to harmony yet unseen. Its bird of crystal opened wings of frozen light. The second was a cloak woven from twilight’s breath, that drank light and spat silence. The third was a lump of soil bound in bark, pulsing with old fights that never ended, whispering grievances to any ear that listened.
She roamed the islands that floated like forgotten dreams. She roamed until the sky wearied of bickering and the shadows wearied of hiding. Then she ascended the pillar that had no summit and awaited the night when three moons hid their eyes and the comet with the serpent-tail slashed across.
When blackness ate blackness, she placed the compass upon the cloak, and the soil-lump upon both. She strummed the strings that were not strings, and sang the ballad that has no beginning word. She sang the ballad that no voice has ever completed.
The compass wept tears of silver that were not tears. The cloak drank them and began to whisper back in a tongue of wind and wrongs. The soil crumbled into dust that danced in anger.
The seven strings jumped from the compass and became seven shadowed roads across the cloak’s hem. The bird that pointed harmony darkened its wings to solid night, tilting now to paths of strife. The lump’s ire soaked into the fabric, making it heavy with unsaid words.
When the comet vanished and the moons showed their faces once more, the woman lifted the new thing (half cloak, half song, all grudge) and uttered words the shadows still murmur when no one hears:
“Let this wander until it finds the eye that sees the wrong and the wrong that sees the eye.”
Then she stepped sideways into the place where steps forget themselves and was glimpsed no more.
Since that darkness the thing has drifted. It has been named many names that all whisper the same curse. It has been concealed in dragon throats, entombed under toppled shrines, draped on empresses who were not yet conceived, borne by paupers who were once emperors.
Every time it is claimed, the shadowed bird tilts its wings a new way, and the seven strings croon a different discord no harmony has ever mended. Every time it is forsaken, the world misremembers one peaceful road and recalls one venomous truth.
The eldest stones, splintered by ice and serpent-fire, still attempt to recount the conclusion, but the marks are faded almost to nothing:
Moral of the story: The shadow does not hide the wanderer, yet the wanderer must also hide the shadow. Only the veil that sings and the song that veils can bear a soul where both are damned, and only the hand that does not grasp will clutch the star that points forever to ruin.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
The Mantle of Ancestral Agitation
This garment is treated as a Mythos Artifact. It does not possess a “level” but instead drains the user’s sanity and magic points to fuel its reality-warping discord.
Sanity Loss: 1d6/1d10 (to attune); 1 point per hour worn. Armor: 2-point (physical), but grants a Penalty Die to all firearms attacks against the wearer in dim light. Item Integrity: 160 HP (Requires a specialized “Science: Metallurgy/Physics” or “Occult” check to damage).
Game Mechanics:
- Shadowed Qi Alignment: Grants a Bonus Die to Stealth and Navigate rolls. The wearer can spend 5 Magic Points to automatically sense the “POW” (Power) and current “Sanity” level of any human within 60 feet, manifesting as a vision of their emotional weaknesses.
- Discordant Starlit Harmony: While under a night sky, allies within 10 yards gain +10 temporary Hit Points. However, all “Charm,” “Persuade,” or “Fast Talk” rolls made within this radius suffer a Penalty Die due to the oppressive aura of agitation.
- Ancestor’s Shadowed Ire: Once per day, the wearer can strum the silver strings. All NPCs within 30 feet must succeed on a Hard POW check or suffer a “Bout of Madness” focused on aggression toward their nearest ally for 1d4 rounds.
- Lucky Shadow Step: Spend 3 Magic Points and 1d3 Sanity to instantly “teleport” to any location within the wearer’s MOV range. This allows passage through physical barriers (walls, doors) thinner than 5 inches.

A Fine Relic (Tier IV). This item is far beyond the standard technology of Doskvol and is whispered to be a remnant of a forgotten civilization from before the sun broke.
Load: 1 (Worn) Tier: IV (Fine quality, Potent against supernatural threats)
Game Mechanics:
- Potent Stealth: When you are in shadows or dim light, the veil is Potent (higher Effect level) for Prowl or Infiltrate actions. The crawling runes absorb light, making the wearer a “living hole” in the world.
- Discordant Aura: While the veil is active, you gain +1d to Sway or Consort when the goal is to cause friction, doubt, or internal conflict. However, any attempt to foster trust or genuine cooperation suffers -1d.
- Pathfinder’s Discord (Special Ability): Spend 1 Stress to play the strings. You gain a “Flashback” for free that represents your ancestors revealing a hidden architectural weakness or a secret passage in your current location.
- Lucky Shadow Step (Special Ability): Spend 2 Stress to perform a supernatural maneuver. You vanish in a puff of twilight and reappear nearby, bypassing obstacles. This counts as a Great Effect movement.
- Ancestral Grievance (Consequence): If you roll a 1-3 on an action while using the veil, the ancestors’ ire flares. You take Level 2 Harm: “Psychic Agitation” or the item loses its Potency until you perform a downtime “Ritual” to appease the spirits.
