Taoist 49 of The Unceasing Crickets Gourd

Lore: The disciples of the Taoist 49 path believe that enlightenment is not found by turning away from the world, but by listening to its smallest voices. One of its founding practitioners, Master Hsin, spent sixty years of his life in a single meadow, doing nothing but observing the lives of the insects that dwelled there. He came to understand that the constant, rhythmic chirping of the crickets was a form of natural alchemy—a spontaneous breathing exercise that refined the spiritual energy, the Qi, of the world around them. He saw it as the Tao, the fundamental nature of the universe, expressing itself through the humblest of creatures.

Before he passed into the great cycle, Hsin created a series of simple alchemical vessels for his students. He took common wu lou gourds, hollowed them, and through a meditative process of etching and breathwork, imbued them with an echo of the cricket’s unceasing song. The gourds were not meant as powerful weapons or tools of creation, but as aids for beginners. By carrying the gourd, a student of entomology could learn to quiet their own spirit and attune their senses to the subtle vibrations of life, refining their own essence by observing the essence of the small. These gourds are now found scattered across the lands, simple but profound tools for those who walk the path of quiet observation.

Description: A small, perfectly smooth gourd, light enough to be held in the palm of one hand. Its surface is the color of aged ivory, warm to the touch, and polished by years of handling. A simple, dark-grained cork stopper seals its opening, attached by a thin cord of braided grass. Upon close inspection, the gourd is covered in thousands of incredibly fine, almost invisible etchings that depict the legs, antennae, and wings of crickets. If held close to the ear, one can hear a faint, impossibly constant, and rhythmic chirping, like a single cricket singing on a warm night. The sound is calming and seems to emanate from the very material of the gourd itself, not from anything held within.

Detailed Stats

  • Spirit: +2
  • Focus: +4

Passive Magics

  • Patience of the Observer: The constant, gentle vibration from the gourd subtly regulates the wearer’s own biorhythms and flow of Qi. This instills a deep sense of calm, making the avatar highly resistant to magical or mundane effects that would cause fear, impatience, or distraction. Mental fatigue from long periods of concentration, such as tracking or research, is significantly reduced.
  • Attuned Vibrations: The gourd attunes the wearer’s body to the world’s subtle movements. The avatar can feel minute vibrations through the ground and in the air, granting them a constant, instinctual awareness of their immediate surroundings. It becomes nearly impossible for them to be surprised by anything that is moving, and they can pinpoint the location and approximate size of any creature within 15 feet, even if it is unseen or obscured. The avatar is always passively aware of the location of every small insect within this radius.

Activable Magics

  • Chirp of Stasis: The wearer uncorks the gourd and focuses their intent, releasing a single, pure, audible chirp that resonates with the life essence of invertebrates. For the next three minutes, any non-sentient insects, arachnids, or other arthropods within a 30-foot radius cease all movement and become perfectly still, as if frozen in a tableau. This does not harm them and they are unaware of the effect, resuming their activities once the duration ends. This ability requires a small amount of magical energy to activate and can be used once per hour as the gourd must internally re-attune to its own resonance.
  • Alchemical Sympathy: The wearer may place a recently deceased insect (dead for no more than one hour) inside the gourd and leave it stoppered for ten minutes of quiet meditation. The gourd performs a minor alchemical refinement of the insect’s life essence and transfers a sliver of its nature to the wearer. The wearer gains a temporary, intuitive understanding related to that creature’s primary survival trait for one hour. For example, using a beetle may grant a minor increase to the avatar’s physical resilience; a grasshopper may grant a small bonus to jumping distance; a firefly may cause the avatar’s gear to emit a soft, guiding light. The consumed insect turns to a fine, grey dust. This process may only be performed with one insect at a time.

The Taoist 49 of The Unceasing Cricket’s Gourd, being a common item of subtle power, circulates through specific strata of Saṃsāra’s vast marketplace. It is rarely found in armories or general goods stores, but surfaces in more specialized establishments where its unique properties are understood or at least appreciated. An avatar seeking to acquire or sell such a charm would frequent the following types of shops.

The Alchemist’s Apothecary

These shops are commonly found in the artisan or scholarly quarters of major cities, often situated between the workshops of magical circuit crafters and guild-sanctioned libraries. The air inside is thick with the scent of dried herbs, rare minerals, and the clean ozone-smell of active alchemical processes. Polished copper tubing runs along the walls and ceilings, carrying magically derived steam to heat various beakers and distillers. Shelves are lined with countless labeled jars containing everything from powdered dragon’s scale to common bog iron.

How it is Sold: An item like the Unceasing Cricket’s Gourd would be presented professionally, likely resting in a small, silk-lined wooden box. The proprietor, typically a studious alchemist, would understand its function based on the principles of Taoist alchemy. They would explain its properties—the regulation of Qi, the attunement to vibrations, and the sympathetic resonance with the natural world. The sale would be a direct, no-nonsense transaction. The alchemist might inquire about the buyer’s field of study to gauge their suitability for the item, seeing the exchange as a matter of placing a tool with the correct artisan.

Cost to Buy: The price is fair but firm, reflecting the item’s genuine alchemical nature and craftsmanship. An alchemist would charge 8 Silver coins. Value to Sell: An avatar selling the item to an alchemist would receive 5 Silver coins, as the shopkeeper needs to maintain a margin for their business.

The Naturalist’s Curiosity Shop

Tucked away on a side street, often near a metropolis’s grand museum or a steam-liner port, the curiosity shop is a treasure trove of the bizarre and the beautiful. The interior is a chaotic yet organized maze of artifacts gathered from across the 73 island nations and beyond. Pinned collections of iridescent beetles from the jungle depths share space with fossilized sea creatures from now-vanished atolls. The shopkeeper is usually an eccentric, well-traveled avatar with a passion for the natural world. They might have acquired the gourd as part of a larger collection from an estate sale or in trade from a Griffon-rider fresh from the hinterlands.

How it is Sold: The gourd would likely be found on a cluttered table alongside petrified eggs and strangely shaped river stones. The shopkeeper might not fully grasp its alchemical mechanics but would be enamored with its connection to entomology and its delicate craftsmanship. They would have a story for it, perhaps romanticized, about the meditating monk who created it. The transaction here is a social affair, open to haggling or even barter. An avatar with a particularly rare insect specimen might be able to trade for it directly.

Cost to Buy: The price is inconsistent and depends on the owner’s whim. Generally, they undervalue its magical utility, pricing it as a curio. An avatar could likely purchase it for 6 Silver and 1 Nickel. Value to Sell: Selling the item here would fetch around 4 Silver, but the shopkeeper would likely try to barter first, offering other strange items in trade before settling on a coin price.

The Pilgrim’s Supply Outfitter

Located near the primary gates of bustling cities or in the sprawling districts that service the Zeppelin towers and airship docks, these outfitters are practical, no-frills establishments. The shop smells of oiled leather, canvas, and preserved rations. They provide all the necessary gear for avatars venturing into the wilds, from self-heating bedrolls powered by elemental magic circuits to single-shot alchemical firearms.

How it is Sold: Here, the Unceasing Cricket’s Gourd is not sold on its philosophical merits but on its raw utility. The shopkeeper, a pragmatic merchant, would display it in a glass case with other charms and amulets. The sales pitch would focus on its tangible benefits for a traveler: the passive ability to detect ambushes and the calming effect that helps one endure long, arduous journeys. Its connection to Taoist alchemy or entomology would be reduced to a footnote or a “maker’s mark.”

Cost to Buy: The price here is marked up for the convenience offered to travelers. The transaction is swift and impersonal. The cost would be a simple, easy-to-transact 1 Gold coin. Value to Sell: A merchant here would see it as an oddity with niche appeal and would only be willing to offer 3 Silver coins, seeing a low chance of a quick resale.

The Monastery Market Stall

On certain days of the week, or during seasonal festivals, practitioners of the Taoist 49 path set up humble stalls in town squares or within the serene, walled gardens of their monasteries. These are not permanent shops but temporary spaces, often just a simple blanket laid on the ground or a small wooden table. They sell items they create as part of their meditative practice: hand-ground herbal teas, ink-wash paintings, and simple alchemical charms like the gourd.

How it is Sold: This is the most authentic place to acquire the item. The seller would be a lay practitioner or monk whose simple robes do little to hide their deep inner calm. They would not try to sell the item but would speak to potential buyers to see if their spirit aligns with the item’s purpose. They believe the gourd must choose its owner. The transaction is a quiet, respectful exchange.

Cost to Buy: The concept of profit is alien here. The price is merely a donation to support the monastery and allow the practitioner to continue their way of life. They would ask for an offering of 4 Silver coins and would not accept a Copper more or less. Value to Sell: One cannot “sell” the item back to the monastery. However, an avatar who has learned all they can from the gourd could return it. In gratitude for bringing the tool back into their circulation for another student to use, the monks would offer the avatar a restorative cup of tea, a meal, and perhaps a blessing for their forward journey, but no coin.

In the diverse landscapes of Saṃsāra, from untamed wilderness to sprawling cities, the Taoist 49 of The Unceasing Cricket’s Gourd is a tool of subtle influence. Its power is not in overt force, but in the creative application of its connection to the humblest forms of life. An avatar wielding this charm uses observation and patience as both their shield and their unseen weapon.

In a Dense Jungle Environment

The jungle is a vertical world of countless hidden things, where the unseen is often more dangerous than the seen.

Defensive Roleplay:

An avatar with the gourd becomes the party’s early warning system. While others rely on sight and sound, the wearer relies on feeling. When a predator like a camouflaged thorn-cat stalks the group, the avatar would suddenly stop, placing a hand on the ground.

  • “Hold,” they might whisper, their eyes unfocused. “My gourd is humming… I feel its vibrations in the earth. Two heavy pads, placed slowly… then a pause. Something large is paralleling our path through the ferns to the left, less than twenty feet away. It is watching us.” This is not a guess; the Attuned Vibrations give them a precise sense of location and size, turning a potential ambush into a controlled confrontation.

If the party accidentally disturbs a nest of giant, venomous hornets, panic would ensue. The air would fill with a deafening buzz and deadly stingers. The wearer of the gourd, shielded from fear by the Patience of the Observer, would be an island of calm.

  • They would uncork the gourd, holding it aloft not as a weapon, but as an instrument. They would take a steadying breath and release the Chirp of Stasis. “The sound cuts through the chaos,” the avatar might narrate. “And then… silence.” The entire swarm would freeze in place, each insect a perfect, motionless statue suspended in the air. “They are still. Walk, do not run. We have three minutes before they wake.” This act transforms a deadly encounter into a tense but survivable escape.

Offensive Roleplay:

Direct offense is not the gourd’s purpose, but it excels at manipulating the environment. To assault a fortified goblin camp, the avatar might spend an hour observing a colony of flesh-eating army ants.

  • After using Alchemical Sympathy on a dead ant, the avatar would gain an intuitive understanding of the colony’s chemical trails and triggers. “I understand their hunger,” they’d say. “Their trails lead to the west, away from the camp. But if I take this sweet sap-root and draw a line directly to the goblins’ larder… their path will change.” They would use this knowledge to divert the entire ravenous colony into the camp, creating a devastating distraction for the party to exploit.

Alternatively, they could use the Chirp of Stasis to freeze a swarm of biting flies right as they passed over an enemy patrol, causing the insects to fall like venomous rain onto the unsuspecting targets.

In a Subterranean Cave System

In the absolute darkness of the deep earth, vibration and senses other than sight reign supreme.

Defensive Roleplay:

Cave floors are treacherous. The avatar acts as a guide, feeling out the path’s integrity.

  • “The vibrations here feel… hollow,” they would announce, stamping a foot lightly. “The stone is a thin shell over a deep emptiness. We must find a path around.” When a horde of skittering, cave-spiderlings swarms from a crevice, the avatar again uses the Chirp of Stasis. The maddening sound of a thousand tiny legs on stone ceases instantly. This allows the party to pick their way through the now-frozen field of spiders without being swarmed and bitten. The Patience of the Observer is also a key defense, preventing the avatar from succumbing to the deep claustrophobia or magical despair that often haunts such sunless places.

Offensive Roleplay:

The gourd allows the avatar to turn the cave’s ecosystem against their foes. To bypass a guarded chasm, the avatar might find a recently deceased giant centipede.

  • After using Alchemical Sympathy, they would gain a temporary understanding of its nature. “This creature did not fear falling,” the avatar might realize. “Its legs could find purchase on any surface.” For the next hour, the avatar would gain a supernatural climbing ability, allowing them to traverse the chasm walls in silence and secure a rope for their companions, completely bypassing the guards.

To create a more aggressive diversion, the avatar could find a nest of giant bats sleeping on the ceiling above an enemy camp.

  • They would then locate a colony of shrieking cave crickets. Using the Chirp of Stasis, they would freeze the crickets, gather several in a bag, and sneak near the camp. By releasing them near the bats, the crickets’ eventual shrieking would awaken the entire angry colony, sending a disorienting cloud of confused bats directly down onto their enemies.

In a Bustling Urban Metropolis

In a city, the threats are not beasts but people, and opportunities for manipulation are everywhere.

Defensive Roleplay:

While navigating a crowded market or a dark alley, the avatar’s Attuned Vibrations would filter the chaos.

  • “Someone is following,” the avatar would state quietly, not breaking stride. “Not the normal shuffle of the crowd. These footsteps are weighted, trying to match our own. Two people, daggers tucked in their boots. They will make their move when we reach the covered bridge.” The ability turns a city’s anonymity from a threat into a tactical advantage for the avatar.

If captured and subjected to interrogation by city guards or guild enforcers, the Patience of the Observer provides a formidable mental defense. While others might be intimidated by threats or magical compulsion, the avatar remains centered.

  • Their breathing remains slow and steady, their pulse calm. They can meet the interrogator’s gaze without fear, processing questions and giving away nothing, their mind a serene pool that cannot be easily disturbed.

Offensive Roleplay:

Urban offense is about sabotage and intrigue. An enemy political figure is being supplied by a specific merchant guild. The avatar captures a few common “rust-mites” from the underdocks.

  • Using Alchemical Sympathy, the avatar gains an intuitive sense for corroded or weakened metal. They could then infiltrate the guild’s warehouse and, with a few discreet nudges and taps, identify the exact support pins on the main cargo crane that are closest to failure. A minor, targeted bit of sabotage would then cause a catastrophic “accident,” crippling the enemy’s supply line for weeks.

To disrupt a rival’s grand unveiling of a new clockwork marvel, the avatar could use the Chirp of Stasis on a cage full of city roaches, placing the frozen insects inside the machine’s intricate gear-work. When the effect wears off, the suddenly active roaches would jam the delicate mechanisms, turning the grand spectacle into a humiliating failure.

Perception of Activation:

Activation: Chirp of Stasis

This is the more overt and commonly used active ability of the gourd, creating a distinct sensory experience for both the user and those nearby.

User’s Perspective

  • Sight: As you uncork the gourd, you see the dark, hollow opening. When you focus your will and energy, a barely perceptible shimmer distorts the air at the mouth of the gourd, like a heat haze on a cool night. For a brief moment, the incredibly fine cricket-leg etchings on the gourd’s surface seem to deepen and sharpen.
  • Sound: You do not just hear the chirp; you feel it manifest. It begins as a low vibration in the palm of your hand, travels up your arm, and culminates in a single, impossibly pure note that you release into the world. The sound is both inside your head and all around you, perfectly pitched and utterly unnatural in its clarity.
  • Smell: A distinct scent is released from the uncorked gourd—not of decay or dust, but the clean, crisp smell of a meadow just after a rainstorm, with notes of crushed grass, damp earth, and cool night air.
  • Touch: The gourd, normally warm, grows momentarily cool in your hand as you pour your energy into it. The vibration of the chirp is a tangible, buzzing sensation against your skin that fades as the sound is released.
  • Taste: A fleeting, phantom taste of ozone and mint forms on the back of your tongue, vanishing as quickly as it appeared.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Qi Flow): You feel a pull of your own internal energy, your Qi, flowing from your core into the gourd. The item acts as a lens, shaping your raw energy into a specific, resonant command that you can feel leaving you and blanketing the area.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Sympathetic Resonance): For a split second before the effect takes hold, you feel a connection to the local hive-mind of insect life. It’s a chaotic, buzzing tapestry of thousands of tiny consciousnesses, which you then feel go utterly silent and still at your command.

Positives: The feedback is immediate and powerful. You are left with no doubt that your magic has worked. The feeling of connection, of commanding a small piece of the natural world, is exhilarating and provides a deep sense of control and attunement with your alchemical tool.

Negatives: The experience is draining, leaving you feeling slightly breathless as if you had just shouted, though you made no vocal sound. The brief feeling of dominion over other living things can be addictive, tempting one to use it for trivial reasons. This sudden, sharp projection of will could also act as a “shout” in the spiritual realm, potentially attracting the attention of other magically-aware creatures.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight: An observer sees you gently uncork the gourd. If they are paying close attention, they might notice a brief, watery shimmer in the air at its mouth. The primary visual is the effect itself: every fly, beetle, spider, and ant in a wide radius instantly freezes in place. A hornet might stop mid-flight, a spider halts in the middle of its web, all motion ceasing in an unnatural tableau.
  • Sound: They hear a single, sharp, and beautifully clear chirp. It is audibly distinct from any natural cricket sound and cuts through all other ambient noise with an eerie purity before fading into an even more eerie silence.
  • Smell: A person standing close to you will catch a fleeting, pleasant scent of fresh rain and night-blooming flowers.
  • Touch: The air seems to vibrate for a moment, a strange pressure against the skin that is quickly replaced by a heavy stillness.
  • Taste: An observer perceives no taste.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Aura of Will): A magically-sensitive observer perceives you as a brief beacon of focused willpower. They see or feel your aura brighten and project a distinct, commanding wave of energy.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (The Sudden Silence): The most unsettling perception for a sensitive observer is not the chirp, but the silence that follows it. The constant, low-level “chatter” of insect life-force in the area is abruptly extinguished. To a druid or shaman, it would feel as if a hole has been torn in the local fabric of life.

Positives: The effect is unambiguous and impressive in its subtlety. The sound is unique but not inherently frightening, and could easily be missed or dismissed by the mundane. It can be a useful, non-lethal solution to a pest problem.

Negatives: The sudden, perfect stillness is deeply unnerving and unnatural. For those with a reverence for nature, watching you impose your will and force living things into a state of suspended animation, even temporarily, can be perceived as a disturbing act of violation and control. It can mark you as someone who meddles with the natural order.

Activation: Alchemical Sympathy

This activation is a slow, meditative process with almost no external signs.

User’s Perspective

  • Physical Senses: The perceptions are muted and internal. You feel the dry, brittle texture of the deceased insect as you place it within the gourd. As you stopper it and begin to meditate, the gourd gradually warms in your hands, becoming a pleasant, steady heat. There is a faint, dusty smell of the gourd’s interior mixed with the specific scent of the insect. The process is entirely silent.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Assimilation): As you feed your Qi into the gourd, you do not feel a projection of power, but an internal process of dissolution and absorption. You perceive the insect’s life essence not as a memory or a soul, but as a pure concept—its “beetle-ness” or “ant-ness”—being distilled into a single, understandable idea. This idea then flows back into you, a whisper of insight that settles into your mind.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Lingering Kinship): For the next hour, you feel a strange, ephemeral connection to other insects of the same type. You notice them more, and you have an intuitive, almost familial, understanding of their immediate behaviors and instincts.

Positives: The process is deeply meditative and provides a profound, if temporary, connection to the natural world. The insight gained is unique and can provide creative solutions to problems. It feels like learning a secret from nature itself.

Negatives: The activation requires ten minutes of uninterrupted concentration, making it impractical in urgent situations. The act of consuming and absorbing another creature’s essence, even a simple insect’s, can be philosophically or morally troubling. The imparted knowledge is abstract and requires creativity to apply effectively.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Physical Senses: An observer sees you sit down and hold the gourd, your eyes closed. For ten minutes, nothing happens. If they were to touch the gourd, they would feel it grow warm, but there are no other visual, auditory, or olfactory cues.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Slow Weaving): A magically-aware observer would sense a very subtle, slow, and intricate manipulation of Qi. It does not feel like a spell being cast, but rather like a quiet, internal process of weaving and refinement. It is gentle, methodical, and entirely self-contained.

Positives: The activation is completely discreet and non-threatening. It allows the user to gain a magical advantage without drawing any attention whatsoever.

Negatives: From an observer’s point of view, you are doing nothing at all. This can lead to impatience or confusion among allies who are unaware of the item’s function. They may simply think you are resting or meditating without purpose.

Alchemical Formula: Gourd of the Patient Listener

This recipe details the process for creating a common alchemical charm that attunes the wearer to the subtle vibrations of the natural world. The process is as much a meditative ritual as it is a physical craft, requiring patience and a connection to one’s own inner energy.

Materials Needed

  • The Vessel: One (1) Sun-Dried Wu Lou Gourd, perfectly symmetrical and free of any blemishes, cracks, or signs of rot.
  • The Voice: The intact Thorax of a Field-Singing Cricket, harvested only after the cricket has completed its natural life cycle. The species must be one known for its loud, clear, and rhythmic song.
  • The Essence: Three (3) droplets of First Dew, gathered from the tip of a single blade of wild grass within the first hour of sunrise. The dew must not have touched the ground.
  • The Spirit: A single, thumbnail-sized patch of Silvered Moon-Lichen. This lichen grows only on stones that receive unobstructed moonlight for at least half the year.
  • The Seal: One (1) Heartwood Plug, carved from the branch of an oak tree that is at least a century old.
  • The Tether: A single cord, three hands-lengths long, braided from fresh meadow grass.

Tools Required

  • Alchemical Etching Needle: A silver or copper needle with a sharpened, hardened point, designed to channel the user’s Qi for fine engraving work.
  • Crystal Mortar and Pestle: Used for grinding sensitive magical components without spiritually contaminating them.
  • Resonance Bowl: A small singing bowl, typically made of a silver-tin alloy, capable of producing a single, pure, sustained musical note.
  • Meditation Cushion: A simple mat or cushion used to maintain posture and focus during the lengthy meditative steps of the crafting process.
  • Herbalist’s Gathering Kit: Small glass vials and non-metallic tweezers for collecting the dew and lichen.

Skill Requirements

  • Alchemy (Novice): Requires a foundational understanding of how to handle and combine materials with different energetic properties.
  • Qi Control (Novice): The crafter must be able to consciously direct their own internal life force (Qi) from their body, through their hands, and into a tool.
  • Herbology or Naturalism (Basic): Necessary for correctly identifying the required species of cricket, lichen, and grass.
  • Carving (Basic): A steady hand and an eye for detail are needed for shaping the plug and performing the etchings.
  • Meditation: The ability to enter and hold a state of deep focus for at least one hour is critical for the infusion step.

Crafting Steps

  1. The Opening Ritual: The process begins not at a workbench, but on the meditation cushion. The crafter must spend a full half-hour in quiet contemplation, breathing slowly and evenly to calm their mind and allow their Qi to settle. All materials and tools should be laid out neatly before them.
  2. Hallowing the Vessel: The top of the sun-dried gourd is carefully opened. The dried seeds and pith are removed. The interior is scraped clean, first with physical tools, then spiritually. The crafter channels their Qi through their fingertips, rubbing the interior walls until they are perfectly smooth and psychically cleansed of any lingering energies.
  3. The Spirit Etching: Using the Alchemical Etching Needle, the crafter must engrave patterns onto the gourd’s outer surface. These are not mere decorations. While holding the image of a living cricket in their mind, they must channel a tiny, continuous stream of Qi through the needle as they carve. This process slowly etches simplified, elegant lines representing cricket legs and wings, infusing the very material of the gourd with a sympathetic pattern of life. This is the most mentally taxing step.
  4. Preparation of the Core: The Silvered Moon-Lichen and the Cricket Thorax are placed into the crystal mortar. They are gently ground together into a fine, shimmering, silver-grey powder. This powder is the physical anchor for the gourd’s magical properties, combining Spirit (lichen) and Voice (thorax).
  5. Harmonic Attunement: The powder is transferred into the Resonance Bowl. The three droplets of First Dew (Essence) are added. The crafter then gently strikes the bowl and makes it sing, sustaining a single, clear note. They must maintain this note while focusing their will on the paste, visualizing the three concepts—Spirit, Voice, Essence—merging into a single, harmonious whole. The process is complete when the paste visibly shimmers in time with the bowl’s resonance.
  6. The Great Infusion: The resonant paste is carefully painted onto the entire inner surface of the gourd. The crafter then returns to their meditation cushion, cupping the gourd in both hands. For one uninterrupted hour, they must perform a breathing exercise: inhaling deeply to gather their Qi, and exhaling slowly to “breathe” that energy into the gourd. The gourd will grow warm as it accepts the energy, causing the paste to be permanently absorbed into its walls.
  7. Sealing and Charging: The Heartwood Plug is meticulously carved to create an airtight seal. The braided grass tether is affixed to it and the gourd. Once stoppered, the resonance is sealed within. The completed gourd is not yet active. It must be placed on a windowsill or outdoors where it can bathe in the light of the full moon for one entire night. This final step stabilizes the enchantment and charges the item with its passive energies.

Old Man Who Did Not Move and Gourd That Sang

In a time that is now itself ancient, there was a man. His name was Hsin. This Hsin was a man of the Taoist 49 path, which is a hard path. One day, Hsin walked to a green meadow full of grass and small flowers. He sat down. He did not stand up again. The sun made him warm. The rain made him wet. The wind made him cold. He did not move. He was the sitting person.

Many seasons of the sun passed. The people of the nearby village saw him. They said, that man is a statue. Or, that man is dead with open eyes. But he was not dead. Hsin was doing a great work. He was listening. He was not listening to people. He was not listening to the wind. He was listening to the small singers of the grass. The insects. The crickets. Their song was a great song. It was the breathing of the world, made into a voice. Hsin heard this, so he did not need to move.

In that same land, there was a great Lord. He was the son of the Emperor. He was the Lord of Many Banners. His spirit was loud. In his palace, there was the sound of servants, the sound of music, the sound of generals shouting about war. In his head, there was the sound of wanting, the sound of anger, the sound of fear. The noise was very big. He had no quiet. He heard of the strange man who sat in the grass and did not move. He thought, this man has a powerful magic against noise. I will have this magic.

The Lord of Many Banners went to the meadow. He came with many horses and many servants. The noise of their coming made the birds fly away. He stood before Hsin. Hsin did not look up. The Lord of Many Banners said a loud thing. “Man of the grass! I am a great Lord. My spirit is full of loud sounds. You have a quiet spirit. It is said you have a great magic. Give me your magic. I will give you much gold.”

Hsin, the sitting person, did not speak. He only lifted one finger. He pointed to the grass where a small cricket was singing its song.

The Lord of Many Banners became angry. This was a great anger. “You mock me! I am a prince! You point at a bug! That is not a magic. That is an insult. I will have my guards take your head from your body.” But the Lord saw that Hsin’s eyes were not afraid. His eyes were like two deep pools of water. The Lord’s anger fell into the pools and was gone. The Lord said a less loud thing. “Show me. Show me the magic. I do not understand pointing.”

Hsin moved then. It was the first time in many seasons of the sun. He moved very slow, like a root growing. He stood. He walked in the meadow. He looked at the gourds growing on a vine. For many days he looked. He found one gourd. It was a perfect gourd. It had no bad marks. He took the gourd. He took the hard shell of a small singer who had finished its song and was now dead. He took three drops of water from a leaf in the morning. This was sky-water.

The Lord of Many Banners watched all of this. He was a man of no patience. He wanted to shout, but he remembered the deep eyes.

Hsin went to his small house. He put the singer’s shell and other things in a bowl. He made the metal bowl scream with a stick. The scream was a good scream, a pure scream. He breathed his lung-air into the gourd for a long time. He put a wood plug in the hole. He had made a thing. He gave the thing to the Lord of Many Banners.

The Lord looked at the gourd. It was a simple thing. “What is this? This is a child’s toy.” Hsin spoke. His voice was like dry leaves moving. “This is a Gourd That Sings. It has the sky-voice in it. When your spirit is loud, hold this gourd. Do not listen to the noise in your head. Listen only to the one sound from the gourd. That is the magic.”

The Lord of Many Banners took the gourd. He went back to his palace of loud sounds. He held the gourd. He heard a very small chirp. Chirp. Chirp. It was a small, foolish sound. His anger came back. “This is the great magic? A bug in a fruit?” He threw the gourd on his bed of silks. For many days he forgot the gourd. The noise in his spirit grew bigger and bigger. He could not sleep.

One night, the noise was a storm in his head. He could not rest. He saw the gourd on the silks. He thought, it is a fool’s hope, but I will try the thing. He picked up the gourd. He held it to his ear. Chirp. Chirp. Chirp. The sound was very small. The noises in his head were very big. They were shouting. But the Lord did a hard thing. He chose to listen only to the small sound. He focused all of his thought on the small chirp.

He listened for a long time. Then a strange thing happened. The small sound, because he was listening to it so hard, became bigger. The big sounds in his head, because he was not listening to them, became smaller. The sound of his anger was pushed out by the chirp. The sound of his fear was pushed out by the chirp. The sound of his wanting was pushed out by the chirp. After one hour, all the loud sounds were gone. There was only the chirp. And under the chirp, there was quiet. He felt peace. He slept.

When the sun came, the Lord of Many Banners returned to the meadow. He wanted to thank Hsin. But Hsin was not there. The sitting person was gone. Some said he had turned into dust. Some said his body was now the grass and the flowers. The Lord of Many Banners looked at the spot where Hsin had sat. He saw the grass was greener there. He could now hear the true song of the small singers in the grass. It was the same song that was in his gourd, but it was everywhere. He put the original gourd down in the center of the meadow, as a gift back to the world. He went home and became a great ruler, the Lord of Quiet Words. Many have tried to make new gourds, but they are only an echo of the first one that held the true sky-voice.

Moral of the Story: The teaching is this: To make a loud spirit quiet, you must not fight the noise. You must choose one small, true thing and listen to it with all your heart.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

Gourd of the Patient Insect God

This appears to be a common wu lou gourd, smooth and aged to the color of old ivory. It is unnaturally warm to the touch. It is covered in microscopic etchings of insectoid legs and antennae, visible only with a magnifying glass or a successful Hard Spot Hidden roll. A faint, constant chirping can be heard from within. Its origins are unknown, but its non-Euclidean patterns and effect on the natural world suggest it is not a human creation.

Game Mechanics:

  • Preternatural Calm: The gourd’s constant, rhythmic vibration soothes the holder’s mind. The Investigator gains a bonus die on any Sanity roll made to resist fear or sudden shock (but not from reading Mythos tomes or encountering Mythos entities).
  • Uncanny Senses: The gourd attunes the holder to the vibrations of their surroundings. The Investigator gains a bonus die on all Listen and Spot Hidden rolls made to detect ambushes, concealed creatures, or secret mechanisms.
  • Chirp of Unnatural Stillness (Power 12): By uncorking the gourd and succeeding on a POW x5 roll, the user can release a single, pure tone. All mundane insects, arachnids, and other vermin within a 30-foot radius instantly cease all movement, freezing in place for 10 minutes. The sight of this unnatural cessation of life is deeply unsettling. The user must make a SAN roll for 0/1 loss. Anyone else witnessing the effect must make a SAN roll for 1/1d2 loss. If the user fumbles the POW roll, the effect may reverse, summoning a swarm to attack them.
  • Essence Ritual: An Investigator may perform a 1-hour ritual, placing a recently killed insect inside the gourd to absorb its essence. This grants a bonus die on one specific, related skill for the next 24 hours (e.g., a spider grants a bonus die to Climb, a beetle to Fighting (Brawl) to resist grapples, a moth to Stealth). Performing this ritual for the first time costs the Investigator 0/1 Sanity and increases their Cthulhu Mythos skill by 1 percent.

Blades in the Dark

The Whisper-Gourd of the Silk-Spinner Sect

A strange, pale gourd said to be grown in the Deathlands, polished smooth by the endless whispers of the ghost field. It was originally a focusing tool for a forgotten sect of mystics who communed with the city’s vermin. It chirps with a sound that isn’t quite a sound.

Item Type: Magical, Occult

Game Mechanics:

This is a special item that does not take up a load slot, but its use may draw unwanted attention.

  • Passive – Attuned Senses: When you Survey a scene or Hunt a target, you can listen to the chittering of the city’s rats and insects. Take +1d to your roll when trying to detect hidden dangers or follow a physical trail.
  • Passive – Unshakable Calm: When you would take Stress from fear, intimidation, or the horrific presence of a ghost, you may choose to ignore it. This item absorbs the pressure. This can be done once per score.
  • Active – The Silent Chirp: Once per score, you may uncork the gourd and release its silent chirp. For a few minutes, the area around you is filled with a spiritual pressure that affects simple creatures. All mundane vermin (rats, insects, spiders) and mindless, lesser ghosts in the vicinity become placid and still. When you use this power, you must Resist a consequence as you channel strange energies. The consequence could be 2 Stress, starting a 4-segment clock labeled “The Hive Mind Notices,” or suffering a Level 2 Harm (Migraine).
  • Downtime – Commune with Essence: During downtime, you may spend one downtime activity to perform a ritual with the gourd and the spirit of a specific insect. If you do, for your next score, you gain Potency on one specific type of action that reflects the insect’s nature. (e.g., a spider’s spirit grants Potency for ambushes; a cockroach’s spirit grants Potency for resisting poison or disease; a moth’s spirit grants Potency for navigating in darkness).

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)

Gourd of the Unceasing Hymn Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement)

This smooth, ivory-colored gourd is warm to the touch and emits a faint, constant chirping sound. The sound is deeply calming and seems to resonate with the holder’s own life force. Intricate, nearly invisible patterns resembling insect anatomy are etched across its surface.

  • Patient Mind. While holding this gourd, you have advantage on saving throws against being Frightened.
  • Vibrational Attunement. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or sensing vibrations. Additionally, you cannot be surprised as long as you are not Incapacitated.
  • Hymn of Stasis. This gourd has 3 charges. As an action, you can expend 1 charge to uncork the gourd and release a magical tone. Each Beast or Monstrosity that is also an insect, spider, or similar invertebrate within 30 feet of you must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature is Paralyzed for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. The gourd regains all expended charges daily at dawn.
  • Alchemical Sympathy. If you spend 10 minutes of a short or long rest meditating with the gourd while a Tiny Beast of the insectoid type that has died within the last hour is placed inside, you absorb its essence. You gain a benefit for the next 8 hours determined by the DM, based on the creature’s nature. For example:
    • Spider: You gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed.
    • Beetle: You gain a +1 bonus to your Armor Class.
    • Grasshopper: Your long jump is up to 30 feet and your high jump is up to 15 feet, with or without a running start.

Knave (2nd Edition)

Cricket Gourd

Inventory Slot: 1

A polished, ivory-colored gourd that fits in the palm. It emits a constant, soothing chirp. It is covered in fine, barely-visible etchings of insect parts.

    • Ant: You can carry double your normal item slots without penalty.
    • Beetle: Your skin hardens. You gain +2 Armor.
    • Spider: You can climb walls and ceilings as if they were level ground.

Fate Core System

The Gourd of the Unheard Song

In Fate, a powerful item like this is best represented as an extras, granting the character a unique stunt.

Item Aspect: Bearer of the Unheard Song

Stunt: The Unheard Song Because you carry the Gourd of the Unheard Song, you gain the following abilities:

  • Inner Quiet: You can use your Notice skill to defend against Provoke attempts that rely on fear or intimidation.
  • Attuned Senses: Gain a +2 bonus to Overcome actions with the Notice skill when you are actively listening for something subtle or attempting to detect a physical ambush.
  • The Chirp of Stillness: Once per session, you can uncork the gourd to release its song. This allows you to Create an Advantage called Unnatural Stillness on the current scene with two free invocations. This aspect can be invoked to affect any mundane insects, arachnids, or vermin, or to create a deeply unsettling and distracting atmosphere.
  • Sympathetic Essence: If you have time to meditate (at least a few minutes) with the gourd and a recently deceased insect, you can Create an Advantage on yourself that reflects the insect’s nature (e.g., Carapace like a Beetle, Graceful like a Spider). This aspect is created with one free invocation.

Numenera & Cypher System

The Resonant Gourde of the Orthoptera

This device is an artifact from a prior world, grown from a programmable biological substrate that mimics natural materials. It appears as a polished, ivory-colored gourd that constantly emits a low, subsonic pulse, which the human mind interprets as a cricket’s chirp.

Level: 1d6+2 (Artifact) Form: A smooth, gourd-shaped object with a tethered stopper. Effect: The gourd’s primary function is to manipulate sonic frequencies and absorb biological data.

  • Passive: The holder’s mind attunes to the gourd’s subsonic pulses, granting them an asset on all perception tasks to detect movement and on all Intellect defense tasks to resist effects of fear or mental coercion.
  • Active (Chirp of Stasis): The user can uncork the gourde, causing it to emit a high-frequency sonic pulse that is imperceptible to most humanoids. All non-sapient creatures of insectoid or arachnoid morphology within short range are paralyzed for one minute.
  • Active (Essence Absorption): By placing organic matter from a recently deceased creature with an insectoid or arachnoid morphology inside the gourde for ten minutes, the user can program the device to grant a temporary biological advantage. This grants an asset on a specific, related type of task for one hour. For example, tissue from a creature with a hardened carapace might grant an asset on Speed defense tasks, while tissue from a jumping creature grants an asset on jumping tasks.

Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (Each time one of the Active abilities is used, the user rolls a d20. If the roll is a 1, the item ceases to function.)

Shadowrun, Sixth World

Wuxing “Cricket” Calming Focus

A popular, if pricey, personal Qi Focus created and marketed by Wuxing, Inc. It appears as a small, handheld gourd sculpted from a synth-ivory biopolymer. It is marketed to corporate wageslaves as a “wellness aid” and to the magically active as a specialized tool. The device emits a programmed, low-frequency sonic and astral resonance that subtly harmonizes the user’s aura.

Type: Qi Focus Rating: 2 Device Rating: 2 Availability: 10R Cost: 14,000 nuyen

Game Mechanics:

  • Focus Power (Attuned Senses): While this focus is active, you gain its Rating (2) as a dice pool bonus to any Perception test where hearing or sensing vibrations is the primary factor (such as detecting a stealthy approach).
  • Focus Power (Inner Peace): While active, the focus helps to regulate your emotional state. Add +1 die to your dice pool for any test made to resist fear or intimidation, whether mundane or magical in origin.
  • Alchemical Link: This focus is designed to be used as a Talisman for alchemical preparations. If you have the Alchemy skill, you can use the gourd to create special preparations.
    • Stasis Chirp Preparation: You can create a command-trigger alchemical preparation that mimics the Hush spell. When activated, it affects a small area with a high-frequency chirp instead of silence. Any mundane insect or vermin swarms in the area of effect become placid and non-hostile for the duration.
    • Sympathetic Essence Preparation: By incorporating a biological sample from a critter (e.g., beetle chitin, hell hound fur) into an alchemical preparation using the gourd as a Talisman, you can create a single-use buff. For example, a beetle chitin preparation could grant the user +1 Armor for a number of hours equal to the preparation’s Force.

Starfinder Roleplaying Game

Idaran “Singing Gourd” of Serenity Level 3 Price 1,450 Bulk L

This artifact is a product of the Idari, a traditionalist faction of kasathas who blend ancient mysticism with advanced technology. The gourd itself is grown from a rare xenobotanical plant, then carefully hollowed out and embedded with psycho-resonant micro-circuitry. It emits a constant, bio-feedback-regulated sonic frequency that is perceived as a calming chirp.

System: Worn hybrid item Game Mechanics:

  • While this gourd is worn, its resonant frequency attunes to your nervous system. You gain a +2 insight bonus to Perception checks and a +2 insight bonus to Will saving throws against fear effects.
  • Chirp of Stasis (once per day): As a standard action, you can command the gourd to emit a targeted sonic pulse. All creatures with the vermin type and an Intelligence modifier of -4 or lower within a 30-foot radius must succeed on a DC 14 Will save or be paralyzed for 1 minute.
  • Biometric Absorption (once per day): As a full action, you can place a small biological sample from a creature with the vermin type (that has been dead no longer than 1 hour) into the gourd’s analysis receptacle. The gourd analyzes the sample and confers a temporary biomodification for 10 minutes. The GM determines the benefit based on the creature.
    • Example (Hard-Shelled Space Beetle): Gain Damage Reduction 2/—.
    • Example (Leaping Sky-Locust): Gain a +5 insight bonus to Athletics checks to jump.
    • Example (Acid-Spitting Roach): Gain resistance 5 to acid.

Traveller (Mongoose 2nd Edition)

Zhodani Calm Emitter (TL 14)

An inconspicuous personal device, typically disguised as a decorative trinket or piece of art. This particular model is shaped like an archaic gourd from a minor world. The casing is a psycho-reactive polymer that interfaces with the user’s neural patterns. It primarily functions as a brainwave regulation device, emitting subsonic pulses and low-level telepathic “white noise” to promote a calm mental state.

Mass: 0.25 kg Cost: Cr 75,000 (often restricted or illegal outside the Zhodani Consulate) Power: Power Pack (1 week of passive use)

Game Mechanics:

  • Passive Regulation: A character carrying an active Calm Emitter gains DM+1 on all checks to resist fear, including morale checks and checks to resist the effects of psionic powers like Telepathy (Awe/Terror).
  • Sensory Filtering: The device filters ambient noise, enhancing specific frequencies. This grants the user DM+1 on any Recon or Investigate check that involves listening for a specific, faint sound.
  • Active Mode 1 – Vermin Pacification: Once per day, the user may activate the device’s wide-band emitter. This broadcast targets the simple nervous systems of local fauna. Any non-sentient animals of Mass 1 or less (insects, small rodents, etc.) within 10 meters become placid and non-aggressive for one hour. This has no effect on more complex or larger creatures, or those with psionic shielding.
  • Active Mode 2 – Biometric Stimulant Synthesis: The device has a small receptacle for analyzing organic samples. If a sample from a biological creature is provided, the device can synthesize a single dose of a tailored stimulant. This process takes one hour and consumes the sample. The stimulant grants the user DM+1 on all checks related to one physical characteristic (STR, DEX, or END) for one hour. The device’s power cell can hold enough energy for 3 such analyses before needing replacement.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (4th Edition)

Cathayan Cricket Gourd

A rare and curious import from the far-off lands of Grand Cathay. These small, yellowed gourds are said to be grown in tranquil monastery gardens and prepared by mystics who follow the esoteric wisdom of the Celestial Dragon Emperor. The gourd is unnervingly warm and chirps constantly, a sound that is said to be the captured spirit of a sacred cricket.

Encumbrance: 0 Qualities: Magical, Trinket

Game Mechanics:

  • A Quiet Mind: The gourd’s incessant, calming chirp grants the owner a measure of peace in a loud and terrifying world. The character gains a +10 bonus to all Cool Tests made to resist fear and intimidation.
  • The Smallest Sound: The owner becomes attuned to subtle noises. They gain a +10 bonus to all Perception Tests that involve listening.
  • The Chirp of Stillness: Once per day, the owner may uncork the gourd and present it as an Action. They must make a Challenging (+0) Cool Test. If successful, all creatures with the Insectoid or Swarm Trait within 6 yards immediately gain the Stunned Condition for a number of rounds equal to the owner’s Willpower Bonus. If the Test is failed, nothing happens. If the Test is Fumbled, the gourd cracks and loses all magical properties.
  • Essence of the Bug (Minor Corruption): The owner may place a recently dead creature with the Insectoid Trait inside the gourd. Over one hour, the gourd reduces it to a single, brackish drop of fluid. Should the owner choose to lick this fluid from the gourd’s rim, they gain a single Trait possessed by the creature (e.g., a beetle grants Armour (1), a spider grants Wallcrawler, a wasp grants a weak Poison on their next successful unarmed attack) for one hour. Each time this is done, the owner must make a Challenging (+0) Toughness Test. If they fail, they gain 1 Corruption Point as the unnatural essence works its way into their soul.
