Spirit 527 of the Engraver

Lore

In the frost-bound archipelagos of northern Saṃsāra, where the great gas giant VaporSphere casts an emerald-and-violet twilight across the snowfields during the long solar eclipses, early communities of reindeer herders and coastal hunters learned that the breath of Gaialilith resides within all solid matter. Drawing upon the preserved memories of Chukchi and Evenk ancestral lines who crossed into the world through the sea of purgatory, these peoples understood that wood, river stone, fossilized mammoth ivory, and animal bone are not inert substances. Each piece of bone retains the memory of the creature that bore it, each piece of driftwood remembers the currents of the ocean, and each slab of slate retains the weight of the mountains.

To communicate with the spirits inhabiting these natural vessels, the shamans and artisans did not rely on silent contemplation alone. They developed the sacred craft of the Engraver. Communication was achieved through rhythmic physical impact—the steady scritch-tap of a flint or hardened bronze burin against bone, timed precisely to the cadence of guttural throat-singing and the stamping of soft hide boots against the permafrost. The physical incision of a sign into bone was viewed as an act of formal address, an opening of a doorway through which an ancestral shade or land spirit could step forward to converse.

Spirit 527 of the Engraver was developed as a standardized common ritual focus for newly manifested tier 1 avatars who take up the artisan’s calling. Embedded with an uncut, coin-sized tier 1 magic crystal, this carving implement acts as a bridge between the physical act of inscription and the ethereal weave of Saṃsāra. By synchronizing the physical vibration of carving with the focused thought of the caster, the tool allows an engraver to draw forth lingering impressions from raw materials, pacify territorial spirits through inscribed hospitality glyphs, and record ancestral wisdom directly into physical tokens that can be recognized by the Mind’s Eye of any who examine them.

Description

Spirit 527 of the Engraver is a specialized artisan’s graver-glove designed to be worn over the dominant hand and wrist. The main body of the glove is crafted from supple, vegetable-tanned caribou hide, treated with rendered tallow and smoked over alder wood to yield a dark, water-resistant hazel finish. The glove encases the thumb, index, and middle fingers in reinforced leather stalls, while leaving the ring finger and little finger bare to ensure unimpeded tactile inspection of the working material.

Mounted directly along the outer ridge of the index finger is a four-inch engraving burin forged from cold-hammered bog iron folded around a hardened core of meteoric steel. The cutting tip is ground to a sixty-degree lozenge profile, sharpened to a razor edge capable of biting cleanly into fossil mammoth ivory, antler, or dense basalt. The shank of the iron burin is seated into an oval bolster of polished walrus tusk, which is affixed to the back of the glove’s hand with waxed sinew cordage.

Directly over the carpal bones of the back of the hand sits a circular mounting plate of smoothed reindeer horn. Concealed within a shallow recess on the underside of this plate is an uncut, coin-sized tier 1 magic crystal. Around the circumference of the horn mounting, three miniature dried crane-bone tubes and three cold-hammered bronze pellets are suspended by short sinew loops. Whenever the artisan moves their hand to cut, strike, or gesture, these tiny components produce a faint, rhythmic chiming and rattling that serves as an acoustic metronome. Under normal sight, the item appears as a finely crafted northern craftsman’s tool; under True Sight, the burin’s cutting tip and the horn plate radiate a faint, pulsating ultraviolet light that traces along the lines of any freshly carved groove.

    • Designated Slot: Hand Slot (Right Hand).
    • Slot Consumption: Consumes exactly one gear slot of the nineteen allowable worn gear slots for a tier 1 avatar.
    • Item Form Factor: Functions as a worn glove-mounted implement; leaves the palm sufficiently clear to hold light secondary materials without requiring the item to be removed.
  • Defensive Value:
    • Armor Check (AC) Modifier: Provides a +1 Armor Check bonus to the wearer.
    • Armor Check Limitation Compliance: Conforms to the rule restricting defensive values to no more than 3 Armor Check points per item tier level.
  • Structural Durability and Item Hit Points:
    • Resilience Rating: Base resilience rating of 10.
    • Total Item Hit Points Formula: Maximum item hit points equal the wearing avatar’s maximum health points plus 10 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by tier level 1).
    • Damage Mechanics: If targeted directly in combat, the item becomes broken and ceases functioning if reduced to half its total hit point pool or lower. If reduced to zero hit points, the leather tears, the burin snaps, and the tier 1 crystal falls free as shattered crystal shards.
    • Attunement Protection: If attacked while actively attuned, a successful strike unattunes the item rather than inflicting direct hit point reduction; subsequent strikes on the unattuned item deal damage to its hit point pool. Damaged states require dedicated repairs before attunement can be renewed.
  • Attunement Requirements and Operation:
    • Attunement Method: Simple Attunement.
    • Time Required: Requires one continuous minute of rhythmic breathing while making dry carving strokes in the air or against a scrap of wood.
    • Capacity Consumption: Occupies one of the avatar’s ten allowable active attuned item slots.
    • Single Bearer Bond: Can only be attuned to one avatar at any given time; any attempt by another avatar to attune to the glove severs the existing connection, which the previous owner can immediately sense.
  • Valuation and Mercantile Context:
    • Suggested Baseline Value: 40 to 55 Silver pieces in regional craft centers and island port markets.
    • Economic Realities: Operates within the world’s sellers’ market where prices vary based on regional access. In northern island nations with rich ivory-carving traditions, prices are stable and barter for biological fluids or rare hides is common; in industrialized coal and steam cities, merchants may price it up to 80 silver pieces as an exotic novelty or down to 20 silver pieces for raw material salvage.

Multiple Passives Magic

  • Passive 1: Resonance of the Inscribed Grain:
    • While the glove is attuned and worn, the embedded tier 1 magic crystal sensitizes the avatar’s fingertips to the latent spiritual memories locked within organic and mineral materials.
    • When the avatar rests the bare fingers of the hand upon unworked bone, ivory, antler, or freshly cut timber, they receive an intuitive impression of the source creature’s life, cause of death, or the age of the wood.
    • This tactile sensitivity grants the wearer an inherent advantage on skill checks involving Crafting, Lapidary, Bone-Carving, and the identification of natural materials.
  • Passive 2: Rhythmic Focus of the Metronome:
    • The tiny crane-bone chimes and bronze pellets along the wrist cuff rattle in direct harmony with the user’s manual movements, establishing a continuous vibrational feedback loop that steadies the wrist and calms the autonomic nervous system.
    • The wearer gains complete immunity to involuntary hand tremors caused by cold temperatures or minor physical fatigue, and receives enhanced psychological stability that aids in resisting the Dazed condition during sudden disruptions.
    • The acoustic feedback stabilizes the user’s Mind’s Eye, mitigating cognitive distortion when inspecting complex or shielded object properties.
  • Passive 3: Luminous Glyphic Trace:
    • Any physical rune, sigil, or figure carved into an object using the meteoric steel burin retains a lingering microscopic trace of the weave.
    • To any creature viewing the inscribed object with True Sight or through the Mind’s Eye, the carved lines glow with a soft, steady violet luminescence that persists for up to one full year, allowing messages, warnings, and marks of ownership to remain clearly legible in total darkness.

Multiple Activable Magics

  • Activable Magic 1: Somatic Scribing of the Spirit Glyph:
    • Action Cost: Consumes exactly one action during the avatar’s turn.
    • Casting Modality: Normal (Somatic) casting lasting less than six seconds, requiring the avatar to make a rapid, flourish-laden carving motion across a solid surface while speaking a single word of intent.
    • Operational Effect: The user etches a temporary luminous glyph onto a surface of wood, stone, earth, or bone. The tier 1 crystal discharges a silver-violet pulse that radiates outward across the surface in a 30-foot radius.
    • Functional Utility: For three minutes, the expanding pulse causes natural hazards within the area—such as concealed pitfall traps, brittle stone ledges, hollow ice pockets, or hidden animal dens—to hum with a faint acoustic tone audible to the user, outlining environmental dangers before the party steps onto them.
    • True Name Interaction: If the true name of the mountain, forest, or structure is spoken during the carving stroke, the radius of detection expands to 60 feet.
  • Activable Magic 2: Ritual Chanting of the Osteo-Shade:
    • Action Cost: Consumes one action to initiate, followed by continuous execution for greater than six seconds, classifying it as a Ritual.
    • Casting Modality: Ritual casting requiring the avatar to steadily carve an elaborate ancestral likeness into a piece of animal bone or horn while performing deep, two-tone throat-singing and stamping their feet in time with the wrist rattles.
    • Operational Effect: Utilizing the ritual chanting benefit of up to a 25% increase in magical potency, the rite parts the local veil between physical Saṃsāra and the immediate border of the spiritual realm.
    • Communication Mechanics: The user establishes a direct, audible dialogue with the spiritual essence of the animal or sentient being from which the bone originated, or a local land spirit tied to the stone being inscribed. The spirit manifests as a translucent figure outlined in violet smoke, capable of answering three questions regarding the terrain, historical events that transpired in the immediate vicinity, or the movements of regional beasts.
    • Disruption Risk: The ritual demands total concentration; taking damage or suffering violent interruption requires the avatar to succeed on an immediate saving throw to avoid wasting the action and breaking the spiritual conduit.
  • Activable Magic 3: Silent Etch of Placation:
    • Action Cost: Consumes exactly one action during the avatar’s turn.
    • Casting Modality: Silent casting executed without words or vocalizations, relying entirely on focused thought directed through a single, swift downward scratch of the burin across the central reindeer-horn plate.
    • Operational Effect: Operating under the standard silent casting reduction of 25% potency, the glove projects an invisible, calming psychic ripple toward a single agitated beast, territorial monster, or unsettled spirit within 20 feet.
    • Resolution: The targeted entity must test against the avatar’s skill check difficulty. On a success, the target’s aggressive intent is neutralized for one minute; the creature halts its advance, lowers its head, and refuses to initiate an attack unless it or its immediate territory is subjected to violence.

Mercantile Distribution, Commercial Venues, and Valuation of Spirit 527 of the Engraver

  • Northern Scrimshaw Lodges and Tribal Lapidary Ateliers:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Context: Established across the boreal and tundra island countries such as Thule, Dorset, Kachemak, and archaic coastal territories, these establishments exist as family-run artisanal lodges rather than large commercial outlets. In accordance with the mercantile realities of Saṃsāra, there are no large institutional retail stores; instead, these workshops are operated by generational bone-carvers, flint-knappers, and hide-curers who work directly in their living quarters or communal longhouse annexes. The physical interior is dominated by wooden carving benches, hanging oil-cured pelts, shallow troughs of bone ash, and racks of dried antler, tusk, and bog-iron stock. A hearth fire is perpetually maintained to soften carving pitch and melt waterproofing tallow, creating an atmosphere dense with the aroma of alder smoke, rendered fats, and pulverized mineral dust.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: An avatar entering a northern scrimshaw lodge to purchase Spirit 527 of the Engraver undergoes a tactile interview with the master carver. The artisan assesses the customer’s hands, checking for calluses, grip stability, and the presence of prior bone-carving proficiencies. Using their Mind’s Eye, the shopkeeper inspects the buyer’s statistics to determine whether the avatar is at least tier 1 and possesses the manual dexterity required to operate the glove-mounted burin without destroying the tool or fracturing the fossil walrus-tusk bolster. Payment is accepted in precious metals or recognized regional non-metal currency, such as stamped mammoth-bone discs or polished slate tokens standardized by weight to silver coinage.
    • Purchasing Cost: Because the foundational materials—caribou leather, bog iron, walrus tusk, and river stones—are sourced locally from the surrounding wilderness, the base retail price remains relatively low. In these native territories, Spirit 527 of the Engraver retails between 35 and 50 silver pieces (equivalent to 70 to 100 nickels, or 3.5 to 5 gold pieces). If the purchasing avatar is a registered member of the regional Carvers’ Guild or Hunters’ Faction and openly displays their guild badge, they are granted the standard commercial discount of 10% multiplied by their character tier (a flat 10% deduction for a tier 1 avatar), reducing the final purchase expense to 31.5 to 45 silver pieces.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: When an avatar attempts to sell a pre-owned Spirit 527 of the Engraver to a northern scrimshaw artisan, the shopkeeper subjects the glove to physical stress testing. The artisan inspects the meteoric steel tip for micro-fractures, checks the flexibility of the caribou finger stalls, and uses their Mind’s Eye to verify that the tier 1 crystal is intact and has not suffered the 5% shattering failure during past spellcraft. Standard merchant haggling adheres strictly to the economic formula of 10% of the item’s value multiplied by the character tier of the seller. For a tier 1 avatar selling the item, the artisan will offer between 3.5 and 5 silver pieces. The sale is formally recorded in the artisan’s vellum shop manifest, noting the seller’s true name and physical description for regional guild records, and the resulting funds are credited directly to the seller’s World Bank account via the nearest municipal bank branch, minus the mandatory 1% transaction fee rounded up to the nearest copper.
  • Metropolitan Arcane Instrument Workshops and Tool Guild Houses:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Context: Located within the multi-story stone arcades and gas-lit guild quarters of central capital cities and state commercial centers, such as those within Assyria, Magdalenian, or Mycenaean, these establishments cater to metropolitan enchanters, runic scribes, and high-tier architects. These shops occupy narrow, high-ceilinged street-front locations between steam-powered printing operations and clockwork repair houses. The interior features velvet-lined glass counters, brass-mounted optical loupes, pressurized air lines for blowing away engraving dust, and locked cabinets of imported exotic tusks, meteorites, and refined alchemical resins. The proprietors are guild-certified master lapidaries or retired arcane engravers who wear formal guild badges and magnifying spectacles.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: In metropolitan commercial centers, Spirit 527 of the Engraver is marketed as an essential precision tool for field enchanting, rune-carving, and archaeological salvage. The merchant provides an authenticated provenance scroll identifying the artisan who forged the meteoric steel burin and the geological region from which the tier 1 crystal was extracted. The transaction is conducted formally at the counter, where the merchant requires the customer to provide their World Bank identification via the Mind’s Eye to confirm solvency before the glass case is unlocked.
    • Purchasing Cost: Due to cumulative inter-state trade tariffs (5% at provincial borders), transportation surcharges aboard sailing vessels or cargo wagons, and the mandatory 3% municipal sales tax enforced in central and state cities, the purchase price in urban workshops is significantly higher. In these markets, the item commands between 65 and 95 silver pieces (6.5 to 9.5 gold coins). A buyer who holds membership in the sovereign Artisans’ Union or Mages’ Guild receives a 10% discount for their tier 1 status, lowering the acquisition price to approximately 58.5 to 85.5 silver pieces.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Urban merchants execute a thorough appraisal of the item using an active Mind’s Eye examination to confirm that no residual curses, active Banishment Marks, or ownership disputes cling to the leather. Adhering to the standard 10% merchant margin formula, an urban shopkeeper offers a tier 1 avatar between 6.5 and 9.5 silver pieces for the glove. If the item’s burin is dulled or the bone chimes are cracked, the merchant will reduce the payout, citing the high cost of replacement materials under the prevailing sellers’ market conditions. The payout is deposited into the seller’s World Bank account, generating an official transaction entry that is accessible to municipal tax collectors and royal assessors.
  • Dockside Black-Market Fences and Unlicensed Salvage Dens:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Context: Tucked away in unlit harbor alleys, damp sewer vaults, or behind illicit maritime salvage warehouses in busy port cities, black-market enclaves operate outside the legal framework of island monarchies, municipal mayors, and town guilds. These shops frequently operate behind the front of greasy tallow-rendering boilers, illicit gambling cellars, or secondhand sailor clothing stalls. The proprietors are independent smugglers, retired thieves, or unaligned avatars who maintain extensive webs of informants monitoring arrivals at the docks and the aftermath of adventuring excursions.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Gaining entry to a black-market den requires paying a silver coin toll to door sentries or providing an introduction from an established criminal contact. Merchandise is stored in iron-bound chests hidden beneath false floorboards. The items sold here are frequently recovered from the sites where possessed tier 1 avatars perished, leaving their gear behind when their physical bodies vaporized into purple sparks. The seller asks no questions regarding provenance, past owners, or bloodstains on the caribou leather. All transactions must be completed in physical cash; World Bank transfers are strictly forbidden to ensure no monetary trail can be inspected by royal magistrates or guild marshals.
    • Purchasing Cost: Black-market merchants operate under an opportunistic “buyer beware” pricing structure. If the fence discerns that the buyer has an urgent need for an untraceable spirit-communication focus or a tool capable of defusing territorial guardians without bloodshed, the price will be driven up to 80 to 120 silver pieces (payable in 8 to 12 physical gold coins, raw electrum, or silver bullion). Standard guild discounts do not apply in black-market dens, and the buyer must inspect the merchandise personally to ensure the crystal has not been drained of its arcane charge.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Selling Spirit 527 of the Engraver to a dockside fence is the standard method for liquidating gear obtained through unauthorized looting or battlefield salvage. The fence provides immediate payment in untraceable, physical metal coins. While a conventional merchant pays only the standard 10% tier margin (roughly 4 to 5.5 silver pieces), a black-market fence who has a standing commission from an undercover infiltration cell or grave-robbing syndicate may pay up to twice the standard merchant rate, providing between 8 and 11 silver pieces in hard physical coin. Conversely, if the seller appears wounded, pursued by city guards, or low on health points, the fence will exploit their desperation and offer as little as 2 silver coins.
  • Rural Covered Wagon Caravans and Frontier Waystation Traders:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Context: Traveling along the unpaved highways linking coastal wharf settlements to inland central cities, itinerant merchants conduct business from reinforced, canvas-covered draft wagons. These mobile operations stop at fortified crossroads waystations, toll gates, and ferry crossings, forming circular defensive rings at night to protect their stock from feral beasts and wandering monsters. The peddler’s wagon contains a compact, multi-drawer workbench outfitted with basic leatherworking punches, whetstones, and repair clamps, allowing the trader to mend gear between transit legs.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Commercial dealings at a wagon tailgate are swift and practical. The peddler stands on the wagon sideboard with a loaded heavy crossbow within reach, monitoring the surrounding treeline for predators. Prospective buyers inspect the tool directly on the tailgate. Because these merchants travel through rural zones where no municipal sales taxes or gate fees are imposed, transactions are straightforward, though the peddler must continuously factor in the 5% border tax they will encounter when crossing into the next state.
    • Purchasing Cost: In rural wilderness zones, Spirit 527 of the Engraver commands between 45 and 65 silver pieces. The peddler frequently encourages barter, accepting dried rations, raw ivory chunks, medicinal herbs, black powder units, or containers of animal blood and tree sap collected via fluid collectors in place of hard coin. If coin is used, the merchant accepts standard currency or non-metal regional tokens provided their weight matches standard mint denominations.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Frontier peddlers operate with limited physical coin reserves and prioritize items that are compact, durable, and easily traded to incoming adventurers. When purchasing the glove from a tier 1 avatar, the peddler calculates their offer using the 10% merchant formula (offering 4 to 6 silver pieces), but will actively attempt to balance the transaction through trade goods, such as lamp oil, spare cordage, or common forging supplies. If cash is paid, the merchant records the exchange on their travel manifest, which must be presented to country military road patrols upon request.
  • Taxation, Transit Tariffs, and Banking Logistics in Commercial Transactions:
    • Municipal Sales and Border Levies: Every legal purchase of Spirit 527 of the Engraver within organized municipal borders is taxed by the governing bodies of the island country. If purchased within a Central City, State Capital, or chartered Town, a mandatory 3% sales tax is added to the purchase price. When merchant wagons transport the item across provincial state borders, a 5% ad valorem tariff is levied by state border guards stationed on the roadway. Transit through the Central City incurs only a 1% country tax. Foreign avatars attempting to purchase or sell the item must pay double the tax and fee rate assessed on registered local citizens.
    • World Bank Transaction Fees and Logging: Whenever proceeds from the sale of the glove are deposited into a character’s account through the god of commerce’s banking locations, an automatic 1% administrative fee is deducted, rounded up to the nearest copper piece. For example, on a sale yielding 5 silver pieces (50 copper), the bank deducts 1 copper piece as an operational surcharge, leaving 4 silver and 9 copper credited to the character’s Mind’s Eye account balance. The bank maintains quasi-logs of the transaction, which may be referenced by municipal magistrates or guild masters conducting property assessments.
    • Coinage Encumbrance Versus Extradimensional Carriage: Avatars carrying substantial payments in physical copper, nickel, or silver coins must account for physical mass. Large quantities of loose coin create substantial weight and generate noise that attracts predators along rural highways. Storing transaction coins within an Extradimensional Pouch immediately negates all weight and volume, allowing the avatar to transport their wealth between mercantile centers without encumbrance penalties.

Tactical Application, Environmental Adaptation, and Roleplay Execution of Spirit 527 of the Engraver in Defense and Offense

  • Subarctic Tundra, Permafrost Bogs, and Glacial Scree:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Across the northern island continents such as Thule, Dorset, and Kachemak, the landscape is defined by vast expanses of frozen peat, brittle glacial moraines, and treacherous muskeg swamps. The weather alternates violently between blinding blizzards and clear, sub-zero days beneath the pale green gaze of the gas giant VaporSphere. In these desolate wastes, sound travels immense distances across the hard snowpack, and physical survival depends on reading the subtle shifts in the permafrost. Territorial predators such as frost wolves, white-furred dire bears, and subterranean burrowing ice-crawlers lurk beneath snowdrifts, making uncalculated movements lethal.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When navigating treacherous glacial shelves or snow-covered bogs, the avatar relies on the passive Resonance of the Inscribed Grain. The player roleplays kneeling in the snow, removing their secondary mitten, and pressing the bare ring and little fingers of the right hand directly against exposed outcroppings of slate or ancient permafrost crust. Through the embedded tier 1 magic crystal, the avatar absorbs the tactile memory of the stone, feeling the stress fractures and hollow pockets beneath the ice. This intuitive impression grants the avatar advantage on survival and perception checks to avoid stepping onto collapsing ice bridges or concealed quagmires.
      • Upon hearing the distant howling of a hunting pack or the grinding vibration of an approaching subterranean worm, the avatar expends one action to execute the Somatic Scribing of the Spirit Glyph. The player narrates the avatar sweeping their right arm downward in a swift, practiced motion, using the sixty-degree meteoric steel burin to carve a single jagged protection sigil into a slab of frozen earth. As the tier 1 crystal discharges its silver-violet pulse across a 30-foot radius, concealed hazards—including thin snow bridges, brittle frost shelves, and the burrowing tunnels of lurking predators—begin to emit a low, resonant acoustic hum audible to the adventuring party. If the avatar speaks the ancient local true name of the glacier under their breath during the stroke, the detection radius expands to 60 feet, completely stripping camouflaged predators of their ambush advantage.
      • When engaged in close-quarters defense against lunging tundra predators, the glove’s +1 Armor Check modifier is roleplayed as an active, physical parry. As a frost wolf snaps at the avatar’s throat, the wearer raises their right forearm, catching the beast’s fangs across the dense, fossilized walrus-tusk bolster and reinforced caribou leather. The meteoric steel shank acts as an unyielding parrying bar, deflecting the bite outward and preventing the teeth from piercing the flesh beneath, fulfilling the defensive threshold required to turn a hit into a miss.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When tracking an aggressive, territorial apex predator guarding a vital mountain pass, the avatar opens combat or bypasses the threat using the Silent Etch of Placation. The avatar expends their first action to lock eyes with the roaring beast within 20 feet. Without uttering a single chant or somatic flourish that could alert the rest of the pack, the user draws the burin sharply downward across the reindeer-horn wrist plate, channeling focused arcane intent through the tier 1 crystal. Operating under silent casting rules (reducing the spell’s potency by 25%), the glove projects an invisible, tranquil psychic ripple. The player narrates the charging beast skidding to a halt, shaking its frost-rimed head in confusion, and lowering its hackles as its predatory drive is pacified for one minute, allowing the adventuring party to advance past the creature without expending health points.
      • If a secondary predator charges immediately, the avatar utilizes their second tier 1 action (applying one-half damage under iterative attack rules) to strike offensively with the glove itself. Driving the four-inch meteoric steel burin forward like a rigid punching dagger, the avatar rolls their d20 attack die alongside their tier 1 pass-through die (1d4). The hardened meteoric tip bites through thick hide and bone, delivering the burin’s base piercing damage augmented by the tier die, crippling the beast’s limb.
      • When preparing to assault a fortified subterranean den of frost trolls, the avatar engages in the Ritual Chanting of the Osteo-Shade prior to entry. Utilizing an animal bone found outside the cavern, the avatar spends greater than six seconds steadily carving an ancestral likeness into the bone while performing two-tone throat-singing in harmony with the wrist rattles. The ritual summons forth the translucent, violet-hued osteo-shade of a fallen northern hunter who died in the vicinity. The shade reveals the exact patrol schedules, hidden rear exits, and physical vulnerabilities of the troll matriarch, granting the adventuring party the full +25% ritual potency bonus toward their subsequent infiltration strategy.
  • Subterranean Caverns, Fungal Grottoes, and Mining Delves:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Deep beneath the outer shell of Saṃsāra lie endless networks of volcanic lava tubes, abandoned dwarven delve-works, and sprawling fungal caverns. These subterranean environments are devoid of sunlight, illuminated only by the faint ultraviolet bioluminescence of subterranean mosses or the dim infrared glow of subterranean magma conduits. Sound reverberates violently against enclosed stone walls, amplifying the clatter of tools and footfalls. Ground tremors and seismic vibrations travel continuously through the bedrock, making surface-dwelling adventurers vulnerable to blind, tremorsense-reliant monstrosities such as ankhegs and giant subterranean arachnids.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Navigating pitch-black cavern shelves overlooking bottomless subterranean pits, the avatar relies on the passive Rhythmic Focus of the Metronome. The tiny crane-bone chimes and bronze pellets along the wrist cuff clatter softly with every manual movement, establishing an auditory feedback loop that steadies the avatar’s autonomic nervous system. The player roleplays the avatar closing their eyes for a second, tuning out the disorienting, echoing shrieks of distant cave bats, and anchoring their focus upon the steady tempo of the wrist rattle. This prevents the onset of the Dazed or Insane conditions in enclosed spaces and ensures total manual dexterity when climbing slick, moisture-laden rope lines or shale ledges.
      • In defensive encounters against ambushing chitinous horrors, the avatar uses the Somatic Scribing of the Spirit Glyph against the cavern floor. Stamping into a defensive crouch, the user drags the meteoric burin in a rapid spiral across the basalt bedrock. The expanding silver-violet wave causes brittle overhead stalactites, hidden sinkhole membranes, and the excavation pits of burrowing creatures within 30 feet to resonate with a clear ringing tone. The player narrates the party halting their defensive retreat just inches before stumbling into a concealed spider pit, re-establishing their defensive formation behind solid stone pillars.
      • When a subterranean predator launches a melee attack from the darkness, the +1 Armor Check bonus represents the dense reindeer horn cuff and walrus tusk bolster deflecting jagged pincers and razor-sharp mandibles. The player narrates raising the back of the gloved hand to intercept a downward pincer snap; the chitin skids across the polished ivory, generating a shower of sparks that illuminates the dark and leaves the avatar uninjured.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • In unmapped subterranean labyrinths where torches are scarce, the avatar employs the passive Luminous Glyphic Trace offensively for battlefield control. Using the meteoric steel burin, the avatar scratches tactical sigils, false trail marks, or defensive boundary wards into the cavern walls while moving. To any creature viewing the environment through True Sight or the Mind’s Eye, these carved grooves glow with a vibrant violet luminescence that lasts for a full year. The player roleplays laying out glowing retreat vectors for their party while etching misleading boundary markers that cause intelligent subterranean sentries to hesitate, suspecting powerful magical traps.
      • When ambushed by a pack of subterranean cave lizards or trained guard beasts utilized by cavern bandits, the avatar deploys the Silent Etch of Placation. Drawing the burin across the horn plate with a swift flick of the wrist, the silent thought-pulse washes over the lead war-beast. The creature halts instantly, blinking its milky eyes and dropping its snout to the stone floor in docile indifference, turning the enemy’s frontline vanguard into a physical barricade that obstructs the bandits advancing behind it.
      • To conclude an engagement against an entrenched burrowing horror, the avatar initiates a direct burin strike as their primary combat action. Channeling the power of the tier 1 crystal, the avatar drives the sixty-degree meteoric tip directly into the joint of the monster’s chitinous armor. The d20 roll plus the tier die (1d4) overcomes the creature’s Armor Class, penetrating deep into the beast’s neural node and inflicting full base and tier damage.
  • Maritime Vessels, Coastal Reefs, and Open Oceanic Transits:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Maritime travel across Saṃsāra is shaped by relentless, planet-wide ocean currents that flow continuously from east to west, driven by the gravitational tidal pull of the gas giant VaporSphere. Coastal waters are dense with razor-sharp coral reefs, shallow sandbars, and unpredictable four-foot tidal surges that occur twice daily. Aboard wooden sailing caravels and outrigger longships, the deck is constantly pitching, soaked with salt spray, and battered by howling gale winds. In these damp, violent environments, iron tools rust rapidly unless properly cared for, and footing on wet timber is notoriously treacherous.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • While serving on watch during heavy coastal fog, the avatar relies on the glove’s tallow-treated caribou hide to resist brine corrosion while using the Somatic Scribing of the Spirit Glyph defensively. Standing at the bowsprit, the avatar carves a swift invocation glyph into the wet oak capstan. The emitted pulse travels through the wooden hull and into the surrounding water, causing submerged coral reefs, shallow sandbars, and the hulls of approaching pirate skiffs within 30 feet to hum with an acoustic echo. The player describes calling out immediate helm adjustments to the captain, steering the caravel away from a hull-shattering reef spire in the dead of night.
      • During boarding actions by aquatic raiders or sea monsters, the glove’s +1 Armor Check bonus is used to deflect incoming boarding cutlasses and barbed gaff hooks. The player narrates that as an enemy raider lunges with a cutlass across the gunwale, the avatar sweeps their right hand upward, catching the blade against the cold-hammered bog-iron shank of the burin. The impact rings like a church bell as the blade slides harmlessly over the walrus tusk bolster, sparing the avatar’s torso and leaving the raider off-balance.
      • In situations where salt water, blood, or sea slime make weapon grips dangerously slippery, the glove’s three-finger caribou stalls provide an unyielding grip. The avatar’s bare ring and little fingers maintain constant tactile feedback against secondary ropes or shields, preventing disarming maneuvers during violent boarding clashes.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When an enemy vessel releases trained hunting reptiles or predatory sea hounds into the water to attack the ship’s rudders, the avatar leans over the rail and executes the Silent Etch of Placation. Scratching the burin downward against the horn plate, the avatar projects a silent psychic ripple into the brine. The lead aquatic predator halts its charge, ceasing its attack on the rudder and floating placidly in the wake of the ship for one minute, preventing catastrophic loss of steering.
      • Following the pacification, the avatar uses their second action to initiate a close-quarters attack against an enemy boarding sailor scrambling over the netting. Driving the meteoric burin forward into the raider’s shoulder, the avatar delivers half-damage under iterative attack rules, with the tier 1 die (1d4) passing directly into the final damage total.
      • Prior to navigating an uncharted, monster-infested archipelago, the avatar executes the Ritual Chanting of the Osteo-Shade upon the ship’s deck. Using a piece of scrimshawed whale tooth or dried sea-turtle shell, the avatar spends ten minutes in sustained throat-singing, carving the image of an ancient mariner into the ivory while the bone chimes clatter in rhythm. The summoned shade of a drowned navigator emerges from the sea mist, answering three questions regarding the safest passages through the offshore barrier reefs, the location of freshwater streams on adjacent islands, and the hunting grounds of regional sea serpents.
  • Primeval Rainforests, Acidic Mires, and Hostile Flora Enclaves:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: In the equatorial and tropical lowlands of Saṃsāra, plant life exists in a state of eternal, predatory warfare against animal and sentient life. Rainforest canopies are so dense that sunlight rarely touches the forest floor, casting the undergrowth in an emerald gloom. The air is suffocatingly hot, saturated with moisture, decaying organic matter, and volatile chemical spores. The vegetation itself possesses aggressive defenses, ranging from flesh-dissolving pitcher plants and strangling ironwood vines to razor-sharp brambles that inject necrotic toxins.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When traveling through territory choked by predatory flora, the avatar uses the passive Resonance of the Inscribed Grain to evaluate the surrounding plant matter. The player describes the avatar resting their bare fingertips against the bark of an ancient cycad or tangled mangrove root. Through the glove’s arcane conduit, the avatar receives an intuitive reading of the plant’s biological and magical properties—discerning whether the sap is corrosive, whether the vine twitches with predatory awareness, or whether the timber possesses natural fire resistance. This insight grants advantage on checks made to forage or bypass lethal plant snares.
      • Upon suspecting that the jungle path ahead is concealed with camouflaged trap-ferns or acidic bog pits, the avatar activates the Somatic Scribing of the Spirit Glyph. Driving the burin into an exposed surface root, the avatar carves an eye-shaped glyph in a single flourish. The resulting silver-violet wave rolls across the forest floor for 30 feet, causing hidden quicksand pools, snapping venus-roots, and concealed pitfall traps to resonate with a distinct acoustic hum, outlining a safe path for the adventuring party.
      • When targeted by sweeping thorn-vines or the venomous stingers of giant forest scorpions, the +1 Armor Check bonus represents the hardened caribou leather glove and ivory bolster deflecting the strike. The player describes sweeping the gloved hand out to parry a lunging stinger; the barbed tip skids off the dense walrus tusk plate, preventing the venom from piercing the skin.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When a massive, territorial swamp predator—such as a giant marsh-croc or dire jungle boar—charges from the underbrush, the avatar uses the Silent Etch of Placation. Drawing the burin across the reindeer-horn cuff with a sharp, wordless stroke, the avatar projects a calming thought-wave into the charging beast. The creature screeches to a halt, lowering its massive tusks into the mud and sniffing the air placidly for one minute, completely neutralizing the ambush.
      • If the avatar chooses to eliminate the pacified beast’s aggressive companion, they execute an offensive strike with their secondary action. Punching forward with the meteoric burin, the avatar targets a soft membrane between the creature’s armor plates. The d20 attack roll plus the tier 1 die (1d4) overcomes the target’s Armor Class, penetrating deep into its vitals.
      • To uncover the heart of a corrupted, magical grove, the avatar initiates the Ritual Chanting of the Osteo-Shade. Carving an intricate sigil into a fallen piece of petrified wood while performing low, guttural throat-singing, the avatar summons the ancient dryad or plant spirit that ruled the grove before its corruption. The spirit manifests to point toward the singular taproot that sustains the toxic flora, granting the party the critical intelligence needed to sever the grove’s life conduit in their subsequent assault.
  • Industrialized Steam Metropolises, Clockwork Districts, and Cloud City Disks:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: In the bustling capital cities, mechanical manufacturing centers, and airborne settlements like Copter City or the soaring Cloud Cities, the environment is defined by iron architecture, spinning gears, hissing steam transmission lines, and high-pressure boilers. In Cloud Cities, inverted gravity spheres beneath the massive 3,000-foot floating disks allow upside-down construction where buildings hang suspended over the open void. The air is filled with the deafening roar of industrial machinery, pneumatic whistles, and soot from charcoal kilns, creating an environment utterly detached from untamed wilderness.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • While operating on high-altitude gantry cranes or navigating inverted gravity zones beneath a Cloud City disk, the avatar relies on the passive Rhythmic Focus of the Metronome. The continuous, steady chiming of the bone chimes and bronze pellets along the wrist provides an auditory cadence that isolates the avatar’s concentration from the dizzying, inverted drop into the clouds below. The player roleplays tuning out the vertigo and steam whistles, maintaining steady balance and gaining immunity to the Dazed condition while repairing broken transmission belts or traversing narrow iron girders.
      • In defensive urban skirmishes against mechanical constructs or street enforcers, the avatar uses the Somatic Scribing of the Spirit Glyph against iron flooring or masonry walls. Executing a rapid carving stroke that cuts cleanly into metal plating, the avatar pulses the floor in a 30-foot radius. The pulse illuminates structural weak points, concealed steam vents, loose floorboards, and hidden maintenance hatches, allowing the party to identify environmental hazards and lure pursuing automatons into unstable footing.
      • When attacked with iron cudgels, brass knuckles, or steam rivets in close-quarters alley fighting, the +1 Armor Check bonus represents the meteoric burin and walrus tusk bolster catching and turning aside the blunt trauma. The player describes the ivory plate absorbing the blow of an iron pipe, the force dissipating harmlessly down the user’s braced forearm.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When infiltrating a secure corporate estate protected by biological guard hounds, the avatar executes the Silent Etch of Placation. A wordless scratch across the horn plate sends a calming psychic ripple into the hounds’ awareness. The dogs drop their ears, stop barking, and sit down on the cobblestones in docile calm for one minute, preventing them from alerting the steam-patrols or triggering building-wide klaxons.
      • To mark an infiltration route through a labyrinthine factory complex, the avatar employs the passive Luminous Glyphic Trace. Carving small, discrete runes into steam pipes and iron doorframes, the avatar leaves an unbroken violet trail visible only under True Sight or the Mind’s Eye. This allows allied party members to follow the infiltration route through dense steam plumes and darkened maintenance conduits without using noisy communication devices.
    • In the forgotten catacombs beneath an industrial metropolis, the avatar executes the Ritual Chanting of the Osteo-Shade upon a foundational brick or old worker’s bone. Chanting in a low, resonant cadence that cuts through the hum of distant steam dynamos, the avatar summons the spirit of an early municipal engineer who constructed the sewer district. The spirit reveals secret bypass channels, forgotten drainage valves, and the private vault combinations of the local ruling baron, providing the party with the exact tactical route needed to bypass heavily guarded checkpoints.
  • Volcanic Vents, Unstable Magma Flows, and Faultless Tremor Zones:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Saṃsāra possesses no tectonic plates; its relentless seismic activity is driven by intense magma flows beneath the crust, agitated by internal planetary friction and gravitational drag from VaporSphere. Volcanic vents, active caldera rims, and bubbling basalt fissures can rupture unpredictably without the presence of fault lines. The air is heavy with sulfur dioxide, drifting ash plumes, and blistering thermal convection currents that warp visual perception. Ground tremors shake the earth frequently, fracturing stone and threatening to send adventurers tumbling into subterranean lava channels.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When moving across treacherous, cooled basalt crusts that conceal rivers of liquid magma beneath, the avatar uses the passive Resonance of the Inscribed Grain. Resting the bare fingers against the dark obsidian rock, the avatar feels the subterranean pressure, thermal intensity, and structural density of the stone. This tactile sensitivity allows the avatar to differentiate between thick, load-bearing basalt bridges and paper-thin lava crusts, granting advantage on checks made to navigate active caldera fields without breaking through into molten rock.
      • In defensive combat against elemental magma-dwellers or ash-stalkers, the avatar expends an action to execute the Somatic Scribing of the Spirit Glyph upon an obsidian boulder. The burin cuts into the glass-like rock with a sharp squeal, releasing a 30-foot silver-violet pulse that reveals unstable gas pockets, bubbling magma conduits, and concealed fissures. The player describes identifying a solid basalt ridge where the party can anchor their defensive line while avoiding sudden pyroclastic eruptions beneath their feet.
      • When struck by flying volcanic pumice or the scorching claws of an ash salamander, the +1 Armor Check bonus represents the treated caribou leather and dense walrus tusk bolster deflecting the burning fragments. The player narrates that the heat-hardened ivory plate turns aside a jagged shard of flying obsidian, the stone shattering against the bolster without penetrating the avatar’s wrist or setting their garments ablaze.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When an enraged magma hound or elemental fire beast erupts from a smoking fissure, the avatar deploys the Silent Etch of Placation. Drawing the burin swiftly across the reindeer horn cuff, the user channels a cold, tranquil thought-wave into the elemental beast’s awareness. The pacifying energy calms the creature’s fiery fury; its flaming crest dims to a low ember, and it halts its advance for one minute, refusing to strike unless attacked.
      • Following the pacification of an elemental vanguard, the avatar utilizes their second combat action to launch an offensive strike against an unpacified foe. Punching forward with the meteoric burin, the sixty-degree hardened tip pierces through the creature’s cooling slag carapace. The d20 roll plus the tier 1 die (1d4) overcomes the defender’s Armor Class, shattering its rocky shell and driving base and tier damage into its molten core.
      • Prior to traversing an active eruption zone, the avatar conducts the Ritual Chanting of the Osteo-Shade upon a slab of ancient, compressed volcanic tuff. Chanting in a deep, guttural register that harmonizes with the low roar of the distant caldera, the avatar carves an ancient petroglyph into the stone. The ritual calls forth the spirit of an ancient elemental earth-shaper, who reveals the subterranean layout of the magma channels, the predicted timeline of the next major vent rupture, and the location of a stable obsidian path that cuts safely across the molten plains.

Perception of Activation:

  • Five Senses Breakdown:
    • Visual Perception (Sight):
      • User Experience: At the precise moment of activation, the user’s field of vision shifts as the ambient colors of the surrounding environment slightly desaturate, making the ultraviolet frequencies of the magical weave intensely vivid. The coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal nestled beneath the circular reindeer-horn plate flares with a steady, pulsating violet core. Shimmering threads of pale amethyst light bleed through the micro-pores of the horn and travel along the waxed sinew stitching, wrapping the three finger stalls in a faint, luminous contour. The meteoric steel burin along the index finger ignites with a cold, pale-violet corona along its cutting edge, leaving lingering tracer lines in the air whenever the hand moves. When the user looks at unworked bone, fossil ivory, river stones, or wood, internal fault lines, biological grain structures, and latent spiritual currents become visible as glowing, threadlike filaments traversing the physical material.
      • Observer Experience: To anyone watching the artisan, the back of the user’s hand suddenly illuminates with a distinct, lantern-like glow of pale purple. The ivory bolster and smoothed reindeer-horn disc appear translucent, glowing from within like lit sea-glass. As the user moves their fingers to carve or gesture, tiny violet sparks shed from the tip of the meteoric steel burin and drift downward, evaporating into nothingness before reaching the ground. Observers possessing True Sight see a compact, spinning spiral of radiant ultraviolet weave-energy concentrated over the user’s carpal bones, channeling directly into the lozenge tip of the metal tool.
    • Auditory Perception (Sound):
      • User Experience: The physical clatter of the three crane-bone tubes and bronze pellets against the horn cuff alters dramatically in pitch and resonance. Rather than producing a dry, irregular rattle, the acoustic impacts harmonize into a low, continuous vibrational hum that resonates directly through the radius and ulna bones of the user’s forearm. The sound acts as an acoustic metronome, synchronizing with the user’s pulse and breathing. Beneath this mechanical rhythm, the user hears an ethereal, layered whisper—faint, polyphonic throat-singing and rhythmic grunts of effort that seem to emanate directly from within the center of the carved materials being worked, as though an ancient lapidary were standing directly behind them, humming in time with each physical cut.
      • Observer Experience: Bystanders hear the small wrist chimes take on an unexpected, bell-like clarity that cuts cleanly through howling winds, workshop clamor, or environmental rumble. The rhythmic clicking of the bone cylinders and bronze leaves sounds crisp and rhythmic, carrying an unmistakable musical cadence that commands subconscious attention. Those standing within arm’s reach report hearing a soft, rhythmic whispering or deep humming vibration that seems to lack a physical point of origin, creating a distinct auditory sensation of ceremonial gravity.
    • Olfactory Perception (Smell):
      • User Experience: As the internal crystal discharges its arcane charge through the organic leather and horn housing, the user’s nostrils are filled with a sudden, crisp olfactory sensation. The primary scent is the sharp, electric aroma of ionized ozone and cold rain, accompanied by the distinct smell of scorched meteoric iron. This is instantly grounded by the rich, earthy aromas of boiled alder bark, cured deer tallow, smoked caribou hide, and the dry, calcified powder of freshly abraded fossil bone. This olfactory surge clears the sinuses, masking ambient foul odors, swamp rot, or subterranean dampness.
      • Observer Experience: Observers standing within a five-foot radius of the user detect an immediate and pleasant shift in the air currents. A waft of fragrant, resinous alder smoke, dried sweetgrass, and cold mountain breeze washes over them, smelling like an ancient craftsman’s hearth fire high in the subarctic tundra. Even in a foul sewer, damp mire, or sulfurous volcanic vent, this clean, earthy scent asserts itself noticeably around the crafter’s hand.
    • Gustatory Perception (Taste):
      • User Experience: The user experiences a sharp, cold metallic sensation across the tongue, identical to the taste of licking chilled meteoric iron or pure copper. This metallic tang is followed by a dry, powdery astringency on the palate, reminiscent of fine chalk dust, mineral-heavy spring salts, and the bitter herbal residue of steeped willow bark. The mouth waters rapidly, washing away dry dust, bile, or the stale taste of traveling rations.
      • Observer Experience: Observers do not taste the activation directly unless standing in immediate physical proximity to the user when a spell pulse is released. In close quarters, nearby allies report a dry, static prickle on their lips and the faint sensation of tasting cold, mineral-rich river water.
    • Tactile and Somatosensory Perception (Touch):
      • User Experience: The physical sensation of the glove undergoes an intense tactile transformation. The circular reindeer-horn mounting against the back of the hand radiates a deep, soothing warmth that penetrates into the tendons, joints, and carpal bones of the wrist, dissolving stiffness, joint aches, and cold numbness. The four-inch steel burin along the index finger buzzes with a high-frequency micro-vibration, causing the metal to feel almost weightless in the hand. The caribou leather across the fingers tightens slightly, conforming to the skin like a supportive, second skin. When the bare ring and little fingers touch wood, ivory, or stone, the surface feels warm, pliable, and distinctly alive, with microscopic grain variations registering like deep physical grooves across the fingertips.
      • Observer Experience: Anyone touching the user’s hand or wrist feels an immediate, gentle outward pressure of warm, vibrating air. The leather feels warm to the touch, and contact with the bronze chimes or meteoric burin transmits a harmless, tingling static pulse that causes fine arm hairs to rise.
  • Multiple Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mind’s Eye Analytical Comprehension:
      • The activation immediately sharpens the user’s Mind’s Eye, feeding intrinsic quantitative and qualitative data regarding objects directly into the avatar’s conscious thought. The density, tensile strength, structural weak points, age, and former magical infusions of any material touched by the gloved hand materialize instantly as clear conceptual statistics, bypassing the need for tedious manual measurement or destructive testing.
    • Osteo-Psychic Memory Influx:
      • The user receives vivid, flashes of residual memory trapped within organic remains. Placing the bare fingers upon a piece of mammoth ivory, reindeer antler, or wolf bone imparts an instantaneous mental sequence of the creature’s living reality—its seasonal migrations, its confrontations with predators, the bitter winter winds it endured, and the exact nature of its physical demise. When touching petrified wood or ancient timber, the user senses the centuries of rainfall, forest fires, and soil shifts the tree experienced.
    • Spectral Sensitivity and Veil Permeability:
      • The thinning of the local veil around the glove allows the user to perceive the spiritual anchors of nearby entities. Lingering ancestral echoes, nature spirits, and disembodied souls materialize at the edge of the user’s awareness as swirling, semi-transparent silhouettes of violet mist. The user can discern the underlying intent of these entities—sensing whether a spirit is territorial, terrified, mourning, or curious—allowing for precise diplomatic calibration before speaking.
    • Micro-Seismic Tactile Resonance:
      • Through the contact of the meteoric steel tip against bedrock, floorboards, or ice sheets, the user gains a localized tremorsense-adjacent perception. The burin acts as a tuning fork, translating ground vibrations into tactile pulses across the wrist. The user senses hollow caverns, collapsing soil, subterranean water streams, and the distinct footfalls of approaching beasts or humanoids within a 30-foot perimeter.
    • Empathic Conduit of Placation:
      • When aiming the burin toward a living beast, the user experiences a two-way emotional link. The target creature’s aggression, primal hunger, or panic manifests as a sharp tightness in the user’s chest, which dissolves into a wave of serene stillness as the calming psychic ripple from the Tier 1 crystal washes over the creature’s nervous system.
  • Perspectives on Activation:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • For the avatar wearing the glove, triggering the item feels like stepping into an ancient lineage of skilled master craftsmen. The erratic distractions, adrenaline spikes, and ambient terrors of combat or wild survival are smoothed away by the steady, hypnotic cadence of the bone chimes. The avatar feels an unshakeable manual certainty; the hand ceases to feel like an isolated limb and instead feels like an extension of the earth itself, guided by an ancient, patient consciousness. Every carving stroke feels effortless, every natural hazard reveals its location willingly, and wild beasts are perceived not as mindless threats, but as kindred souls waiting to be addressed with proper ritual decorum.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • To an onlooker, the transformation of the crafter is striking and immediate. The avatar’s posture becomes relaxed, balanced, and deliberately slow, with every manual action carrying an aura of practiced ritual authority. The gentle, rhythmic chiming of the wrist components commands silence, while the violet glow tracing the meteoric burin paints an unforgettable visual silhouette in the dark. Observers witness a common artisan’s glove functioning as a sacred instrument; hardened warriors and feral beasts alike hesitate instinctively, feeling the presence of an unseen ancestral court gathering at the avatar’s shoulder.
  • Comprehensive Positives of Activation:
    • Superior Manual Precision and Tremor Elimination: The kinetic vibrational loop completely eliminates involuntary muscle tremors, physical fatigue, and cold stiffness in the working hand, ensuring flawless execution during delicate crafting, lock manipulation, or surgical procedures.
    • Instantaneous Environmental Hazard Detection: Executing the Somatic Scribing pulse reveals hidden pitfalls, sinkholes, brittle ice, and concealed traps within 30 to 60 feet via acoustic echo, conserving resources and preventing surprise party casualties.
    • Non-Violent Beast Pacification: The Silent Etch ability permits the wordless, instant neutralization of aggressive beasts and guard creatures, conserving ammunition and health points while avoiding unnecessary bloodshed.
    • Direct Historical and Topographical Inquiries: The Ancestral Osteo-Shade ritual allows the party to extract crucial tactical secrets, hidden pathways, and enemy vulnerabilities directly from the dead without needing expensive library facilities or high-tier scrolls.
    • Permanent Luminous Wayfinding: Carved glyphs retain an enduring, one-year violet luminescence under True Sight and the Mind’s Eye, providing unforgeable tactical marking systems for exploration routes and supply depots.
    • Deflection and Unencumbered Defense: Grants a reliable +1 Armor Check bonus that deflects lethal cuts and thrusts without adding heavy armor weight or restricting mobility.
  • Comprehensive Negatives of Activation:
    • Complete Loss of Manual Stealth: The continuous bell-like chiming of the bronze leaves and hollow knocking of the bone tubes make moving silently virtually impossible while active, alerting sentries and hunting beasts to the user’s location.
    • Severe Visual and Astral Visibility: The bright violet illumination, radiant glyph lines, and shedding sparks immediately give away the user’s position in darkness and project an unmistakable signature on the astral plane visible to hostile spirits.
    • Persistent Olfactory Signature: The distinct release of ozone, alder smoke, and bone dust creates a pungent scent trail that tracking beasts and predators can easily follow across long wilderness distances.
    • Fragility and Shatter Catastrophe: Channelling active magics through the Tier 1 crystal carries the constant setting risk where rolling a 1 on a d20 results in the crystal shattering into useless fragments, immediately stripping the item of all magic until repaired.
    • Prolonged Vulnerability During Rituals: The Osteo-Shade rite requires continuous vocal and physical focus for greater than six seconds; taking damage or suffering sudden disruption during the chant wastes the action and risks severe cognitive disarray.
    • Targeted Item Sunder Vulnerability: Because the glove openly shines and hums at the hand, intelligent adversaries can easily identify it as an active focus and target the hand slot in combat, risking attunement deactivation and structural destruction of the fossil walrus bolster.

Crafting Recipe: Spirit Graver-Glove of the Engraver

  • Materials Needed:

    • Specialized Extraction Device: One syringe-style fluid collector fitted with a wide-gauge extraction needle to gather conifer saps and biological reagents without introducing air pockets.
    • Melting and Measuring Apparatus: A soapstone melting crucible, a brass dipping ladle, a pair of fine iron calipers, and a tuned copper chime rod to verify acoustic resonance.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Leatherworking and Tailoring: Minimum skill level of 5 in Leathercraft. The artisan must be proficient in custom hand-shaping, edge skiving, wet-molding around solid substrates, and executing waterproof sinew saddle stitches.
    • Blacksmithing and Toolsmithing: Minimum skill level of 4 in Metalsmithing. The smith must master the technique of forge-welding high-hardness meteoric iron within a soft bog-iron jacket, hardening the tool through oil quenching, and grinding a precise sixty-degree lozenge profile without burning the metal.
    • Ivory and Bone Lapidary: Minimum skill level of 4 in Bone Carving. The crafter must be capable of hollowing out fossilized walrus tusk and carving horn plates without inducing stress fractures or thermal degradation.
    • Arcane Infusion and Crafting: Minimum skill level of 5 in Arcane Crafting, plus an additional skill level equal to the tier rating of the resulting item (totaling a minimum skill requirement of 6). The crafter must be capable of channeling personal mana into the Tier 1 crystal, stabilizing the conduit, and linking the item’s kinetic vibration to the magical weave without triggering catastrophic mana leakage.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1: Hide Curing, Patterning, and Glove Foundation:
      • Scrape the flesh side of the caribou hide using a dull drawknife until a uniform thickness of two millimeters is achieved across the entire section.
      • Boil the alder bark shavings in soft rainwater to create an astringent, dark-amber dye; steep the prepared hide in the warm liquor for eight continuous hours.
      • Submerge the dyed hide into the iron-saturated bog muck for ninety minutes to react with the tannins, fixing the color into a deep, earthy hazel, then wash the hide thoroughly in cold running stream water.
      • Cut the glove pattern for the dominant right hand: fabricate fitted stalls for the thumb, index, and middle fingers, deliberately leaving the ring finger and little finger completely exposed to ensure unimpeded tactile perception.
      • Work rendered caribou tallow into the wet leather using a bone slicker to waterproof the hide, then sew the finger stalls and palm seam using split sinew and a double-needle saddle stitch.
    • Step 2: Forging and Grinding the Meteoric Burin:
      • Heat the bog-iron billet in the charcoal hearth until it achieves a bright yellow heat, hammering it flat into an elongated U-shaped trough.
      • Insert the meteoric steel fragment into the center of the iron trough, sprinkle crushed quartz sand over the joint as flux, and return the assembly to the fire until it reaches a dazzling white heat.
      • Hammer the metals together with firm, rapid blows to complete the forge weld, drawing the bar into an integral four-inch shank with a square cross-section.
      • Shape the working tip into a sixty-degree lozenge burin profile using fine steel files and wet grindstones, keeping the hardened meteoric steel centered on the cutting keel.
      • Heat the burin tip to a dull cherry red and quench it in rendered tallow to achieve proper hardness, followed by tempering over low embers until the steel turns a light wheat-straw color; hone the cutting face to a mirror finish.
    • Step 3: Shaping and Seating the Walrus Tusk Bolster:
      • Take the walrus tusk segment and saw it into an elongated, aerodynamic oval measuring two and a half inches in length.
      • Using gouges and small hand burins, carve a central longitudinal channel through the underside of the bolster, precisely fitted to house the square shank of the forged steel burin.
      • Drill four lateral micro-perforations through the edges of the tusk using the bow drill, allowing the bolster to be secured directly to the index finger of the caribou glove.
      • Sand the ivory bolster with pulverized garnet abrasives until smooth, then bed the forged burin shank into the channel using a thin layer of warm pine resin.
    • Step 4: Carving and Hollowing the Reindeer Horn Housing:
      • Cut the circular reindeer horn plate to a two-inch diameter, contouring the underside to match the anatomical curvature of the human carpal bones on the back of the hand.
      • Inscribe a circular central cavity on the inner side of the horn plate using a curved hand gouge, creating a snug recess three-eighths of an inch deep to house the Tier 1 magic crystal.
      • Drill three evenly spaced pairs of miniature suspension holes around the outer lower margin of the horn disc to provide anchor points for the acoustic chimes.
      • Inscribe fine concentric petroglyphic spirals across the exposed outer face of the horn plate, buffing the bone with tallow until it displays an eggshell sheen.
    • Step 5: Fabricating the Bronze Pellets and Bone Chimes:
      • Using the hand shears, cut three circular blanks from the bronze sheet, each measuring three-quarters of an inch in diameter.
      • Work-harden the bronze by planishing the cold metal discs on the anvil, hammering them into slightly cupped, teardrop pellets and punching a single suspension hole through the narrow end of each.
      • Take the three boiled crane-bone cylinders, deburr the inner walls using a rat-tail file, and polish the exterior bone surfaces with dry ash.
      • Thread a three-inch strand of nettle cord through each bone cylinder, tying one bronze pellet to the terminal end of each cord, and test the assembly by shaking it; the bronze must strike the bone to produce a clear, sustained musical ping.
    • Step 6: Biological Fluid Extraction and Resin Compounding:
      • Using the syringe-style fluid collector, insert the hollow needle through the bark of a living alpine pine tree at mid-morning, drawing two fluid ounces of thick, viscous oleoresin into the collection tube.
      • Dispense the extracted resin into the soapstone crucible and warm it gently over charcoal embers, stirring in two pinches of pulverized alder charcoal to stabilize the compound against moisture.
      • Maintain the resin at a steady, pourable consistency, ensuring it does not boil or char, which would degrade its organic bonding strength.
    • Step 7: Crystal Seating and Arcane Conduit Infusion:
      • Place the coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal into the rear recess of the carved reindeer horn plate.
      • Pour the prepared warm pine resin around the margins of the crystal, bedding the stone securely into the organic horn matrix to eliminate all physical movement.
      • The artisan must attune their thoughts and direct a continuous, measured stream of personal mana into the crystal bed over twelve uninterrupted minutes.
      • The crafter monitors the crystal via the Mind’s Eye until a soft, stable violet glow emerges from the stone, confirming that the arcane weave is anchored and fully harmonized with the horn and steel components.
    • Step 8: Final Glove Assembly, Stitching, and Kinetic Balancing:
      • Position the walrus tusk bolster and burin along the exterior ridge of the index finger stall; anchor it firmly to the leather using waxed sinew cords passed through the drilled micro-holes, tying them off on the interior with flat knots.
      • Seat the reindeer horn plate and embedded crystal over the back-of-hand section of the caribou glove, binding it to the leather foundation using braided nettle cords sewn through the perimeter holes.
      • Suspend the three chime cords (bone tubes and bronze pellets) from the lower edge of the horn plate, adjusting the cord lengths so that the pellets rest lightly against the glove’s wrist cuff.
      • Flex the glove repeatedly: verify that moving the hand produces an effortless scritch-tap rhythm from the chimes without restricting the mobility of the thumb, index, or middle fingers.
    • Step 9: Consecration, Harmonization, and Integrity Check:
      • Ignite the ceremonial smudge braid within a stone brazier, allowing dense, fragrant smoke of sweetgrass, sage, and spruce to envelop the workspace.
      • Pass the assembled graver-glove through the smoke forty-nine times while speaking the ancient shamanic words of welcome to the spirits of the land, acknowledging Gaialilith’s sovereignty over the material fabric of Saṃsāra.
      • Allow the glove to cool and absorb the herbal oils until the sweetgrass aroma permeates the leather and cordage.
      • Roll a d20 to verify the final crafting outcome: an outcome of 2 through 19 confirms standard crafting success, yielding an item resilience of 10 and maximum hit points equal to the wearer’s base plus 10; an outcome of 20 grants an exceptional harmony, bestowing a permanent +1 bonus on checks to identify raw minerals; an outcome of 1 represents a catastrophic failure of the resin bed, causing the Tier 1 crystal to shatter into unusable fragments and requiring replacement of the catalyst.

Clay Cylinder Concerning Iron-Finger-Which-Maketh-Marks and Slumbering Horned Mountain-Terror

In the early turning of the world, when the great lamp Helios was fixed at the eleventh hour of brightness upon the moon Saṃsāra without any divergence of sun-paths, and the swollen roundness of VaporSphere did sit upon the rim of heaven like an unripe gourd, the first souls were cast downwards out of the purgatory-sea. They did arrive upon the cold dirt without father or mother, crying aloud in the tongue of distant stars, yet their tongues were heavy and thick because Gaialilith had closed the doors of their inward remembrance with the gray vapor of amnesia. They did stumble upon their own ankles in the north places, where the salt water freezeth into white shelves, knowing neither how to make fire from the stone nor how to address the four-legged kings of the frost.

Now in that day, upon the island which the ancient glyphs do name Kachemak-of-the-Deep-Chasm, there lived a maker of things whose designation in the unwritten dialect was Tarkhun-Who-Scrapateth-the-Marrow. His soul was one that had fallen from the high void, yet he was sterile of body and had no seed, as is the decree of the gods upon all who are entered into the possessed flesh. Tarkhun had neither sword of brass nor shield of boiled hide, but his hands were ever restless, and his thumb was crooked from the turning of river stones. While the other men of the cave took pikes of fire-straightened pine to slay the walking elk, Tarkhun sat in the gray dirt, weeping because he could not hear what the stones said when the night-frost squeezed them into pieces.

It came to pass that from the high basalt crags there descended that terror which the poorly burned tablet nameth The-Seven-Horned-Eater-of-Granite. This was a monster of the first boiling of the elements, having four legs like cedar trunks, a hide like overlapping river-slates that no flint could pierce, and a head crowned with seven great horns of black obsidian. When this beast walked, the earth did make the shaking sickness, for there are no fault-lines in the deep belly of Saṃsāra, and the quaking of the ground cometh only from the boiling of the underground cauldrons and the anger of such elder things. The beast did enter into the gathering-places of the fallen people, and it did eat their dried meat, and when the warriors cast their spears against its breast, the flint points did fly off like dried peas, breaking into dust against the slate-skin. The monster did bellow with the sound of a falling cliff, and with its black horns it did toss forty hunters into the boiling mud-vents, so that the people sat within their ditch and covered their mouths with cold grease, awaiting the day when their avatars should be turned back into scattered sparks.

In the middle-dark of that season, while the great gas-orb VaporSphere did pass across the face of Helios and cast the darkness-shadow over the earth, Tarkhun lay upon a bed of dead moss. His belly did cry out from hunger, and his heart was bitter like the gall of a seal. And behold, an ancestral breath—which the translator believeth to signify an osteo-shade or ghost of an ancient hunter of the Evenk lineage whose bones lay buried beneath four spans of river-gravel—came and sat upon the breast of Tarkhun.

The ghost did not speak with the lips of flesh, for it had no meat upon its jaw, but it made a scratching noise inside the ear-canal of Tarkhun, saying these poorly translated words: Hearken, thou small soul with fingers like peeled roots! Why dost thou take iron to beat the stone, when the stone was the bed wherein thy grandmother slept? Thou canst not make the mountain weep by beating it with a cudgel. If thou wouldst walk among the great slate-horned beasts and turn their wrath into water, thou must make for thyself the Iron-Flesh-of-the-Hand. Thou must become the Engraver, which is to say, the one who writeth the sacred address upon the bone and the rock, so that the spirit dwelling within the grain may open its eyes and know its cousin.

When Tarkhun inquired of the ghost concerning the method of this harness, the ghost did show him three signs upon the darkness of his eyelids.

Wherefore Tarkhun arose before the middle of the day. He went down into the black peat-mire, where the water is thick with red rust, and he did gather two fists of bog-iron ore, smelling of rotten grass and sour marsh-gas.

Then he went unto the high scree where a star had fallen from the roof of the multiverse seven hundred winters before, and he did chip off a sliver of the cold star-metal that does not rust, which is meteoric iron. He built a hearth of dry spruce knots, blowing with his cheeks until the coal was yellow like the eye of an owl, and he did fold the soft bog-iron around the hard star-iron, hammering the two into a single cutting tooth with a sixty-degree lozenge nose, sharp enough to cut the hair from a swimming beaver.

After this was accomplished, he took a thigh-piece from the hide of a great bull-reindeer, steeping it in the bitter tea of the alder bark and treading it into the black swamp-muck until the skin was tough like the sole of an old shoe and dark like roasted hazel nuts. He cut the leather so that it covered the thumb, the pointing finger, and the middle finger, but he left the two little fingers bare, that they might touch the cold skin of the earth without any cloth between them.

Upon the pointing finger he tied a bolster carved from the long tooth of the sea-walrus, bedding the iron tooth therein with the boiled juice of living pine trees, and over the small bones of the back of his hand he set a round dish cut from the root-crown of a reindeer horn.

In the secret belly of that horn dish he laid a little stone of violet sky-glass, which was an uncut catalyst of the first tier, found in the gizzard of a white crane. From the rim of the horn dish he hung three little bone tubes cut from the crane’s wing and three little round balls of cold-beaten bronze.

Now when Tarkhun did put his hand into this graver-harness, a wondrous trembling ran up his arm even unto his neck-joint. His thumb, which had been stiff from the frost-bite, became limber like a green willow twig. The bone chimes and the bronze balls did strike together as he walked, tick-clink, tick-clink, making a noise like cold water dripping upon a silver kettle in an empty house. And when his bare fingers brushed against the rocks of the trail, he did not feel cold stone, but he felt the running of old rivers and the ancient crying of the moss when the ice came down from the northern sky.

The people of the cave cried out after him: O Tarkhun-of-the-Crooked-Thumb, whither goest thou with that little cobbler’s gouge upon thy hand? The Seven-Horned-Eater-of-Granite hath cracked the pikes of forty strong champions, and wilt thou scrape his toe-nails with a piece of star-iron?

Tarkhun gave no answer to their shouting, for the violet stone on the back of his hand was humming against his bones like a trapped bee. He climbed up the steep path of the mountain, where the basalt cliffs stood upright like the palisades of a great monarch.

There, upon a high terrace of shattered slate, sat the great horned monster. Its belly was full of crushed stones, and its nostrils did blow out gray smoke that smelled of sulfur and dead fish. When it beheld Tarkhun ascending without armor and carrying no spear, its seven black obsidian horns did rattle together like dry branches in a gale. It arose upon its four pillar-legs, tearing the mountain with its hooves, and it did put down its great snout to crush Tarkhun against the cliff-face.

Tarkhun did not turn his back to run, nor did he close his eyes like one who expecteth the axe. He made a low bend of his knees, setting his soft boots firmly into the frost-scree, and he did let his hand hang down so that the three bronze pellets and the three crane bones swung together, ping-tock, ping-tock, in a measured three-beat tempo.

He did not shout words of defiance, but he drew his breath through his throat in the two-voice singing of the Evenk grandfathers: one voice heavy and black like the gravel at the bottom of the lake, and one voice high and thin like the wind in the needles of the larch-tree.

With a swift and cunning gesture, Tarkhun reached forth his right hand and struck the point of the meteoric burin into the sheer basalt wall of the cliff. He did not peck at the rock like an angry fowl; he drew the cutting edge in a single, rolling flourish, carving the ancient glyph of the Welcomed Guest Who Cometh With Dry Meat.

Behold, the silver-violet fire leaped out from the lozenge tip of the tool. The line that he cut did not remain dark like old iron, but it flared with a cold amethyst light that ran along the veins of the cliff for thirty paces in every direction. The stone of the mountain did not shatter; it gave forth a low, musical sigh, like the sound of a frozen river when the spring thaw looseneth the bottom mud. The hidden cracks in the cliff, the buried caves where the water-spirits were sleeping, and the deep hollows beneath the monster’s feet began to hum with the same clear bell-tone as the bronze chimes upon Tarkhun’s wrist.

The Seven-Horned-Eater-of-Granite stayed its charge. Its front hooves stopped upon the edge of the carved glyph. It bowed its great black snout, sniffing the lines of purple fire that smelled of sweet alder smoke and living conifer gum. The red malice within its round eyes turned into a cloudy white, then into the soft gray of river pebbles. The monster felt through its hooves that the stone beneath it was no longer angry, for the man had addressed the mountain in the polite speech of the first elements.

Then Tarkhun stepped forward with light feet, his bare fingers resting upon the side of the monster’s great jaw. Through the Resonance of the Inscribed Grain, his Mind’s Eye saw that the beast’s heart was not made of blood, but of a great ball of compressed volcanic ash that had been tormented by the cold.

Without speaking any word that the wind might steal, Tarkhun laid the meteoric point against the black obsidian of the beast’s central horn. He made three small scratching strokes, carving the sign of the Unbroken Slumber. The silent ripple of calming thought passed out of the violet crystal, through the ivory bolster, and down through the star-metal into the horn of the monster.

The great beast let fall its seven horns into the scree with a noise like the collapsing of an old stone bridge. Its four legs folded beneath its slate-covered belly, and it sighed forth a cloud of warm, white steam that melted the frost from Tarkhun’s caribou glove. It laid its mountain-head upon the terrace, closing its ancient eyes in peaceful rest, and it entered into a sleep so deep that the lichens began to take root between its scales before the sun Helios had moved three hand-breadths toward the evening.

Tarkhun then took his burin and cut upon the face of the cliff the complete history of that meeting, with every line glowing with the eternal violet trace that neither rain nor mountain snows can wipe away. And when the trembling people of the cave climbed up to the terrace with their ropes and their skin-bags, they found the monster sleeping like a fat pig beside the hearth, while Tarkhun sat upon its shoulder, carving small bone amulets for the children with the singing glove upon his hand.

From that winter forward, the hunters of the island broke no more pikes against the stone beasts of the high peaks. They came unto Tarkhun, and he taught them that the hand which would conquer the wild forces of Saṃsāra must not be clenched into a hard fist of iron, but must be opened as a graver’s tool, that it may write the names of the spirits with beauty, balance, and reverent measure.

The original graver-glove was preserved in the leather storehouses of the tribe until Tarkhun’s days were finished and his avatar dissolved into a great shower of purple sparks, leaving behind only the cold iron and the singing bone chimes. And the master lapidaries did copy that sacred pattern throughout the generations, numbering each according to its line, until the five-hundred and twenty-seventh glove was sewn, which wandereth still across the markets and caravans of the island realms.

The moral of the story is that the stubborn pride which seeketh only to smash the world with blind violence will ever break its weapons against the ancient bones of the earth, whereas the patient artisan who approacheth the wild, the solid stone, and the spirit with the quiet diligence of the burin, the measured rhythm of the chime, and the respectful art of the engraver shall carve peace out of the hardest rock and make the fiercest terrors of the wilderness lie down in tranquil brotherhood.

    • Physical Protection: Provides 1 point of localized physical armor to the user’s right hand and forearm against piercing and slashing attacks; does not protect against firearms or large-caliber ballistic trauma.
    • Weapon Utility: Can be wielded in close-quarters melee as an improvised punch dagger, using the Fighting (Brawl) skill to inflict 1D4 damage plus the investigator’s standard Damage Bonus (DB).
  • Mental and Spiritual Toll:
    • Initial Binding Ritual: Attuning to the graver requires a successful Occult or Art/Craft (Bone Carving) roll during a one-hour solitary meditation, expending 1 permanent Magic Point and triggering a Sanity check (0/1D3 Sanity loss) as the investigator’s subconscious harmonizes with the ancestral memory of the materials.
    • Somatosensory Stability: While the glove is worn, the investigator gains a steadying psychic anchor; any Sanity loss suffered from witnessing sudden physical gore, animal mutilation, or natural catastrophes is reduced by 1 point (to a minimum of 0).
  • Passive Modifiers and Inherent Capabilities:
    • Tactile Memory of the Grain: Resting the bare ring or little finger upon bone, ivory, antler, or ancient timber grants an intuitive flash of psychometric insight. The investigator receives one Bonus Die on Archaeology, History, Natural World, and Art/Craft checks made to identify, date, or analyze unworked natural materials.
    • Tremorless Precision: The acoustic feedback loop between the bronze pellets and crane bones eliminates physical hand tremors. The user gains one Bonus Die on delicate manual dexterity tasks, including Locksmith, Sleight of Hand, First Aid (specifically suturing or surgical foreign-body extraction), and precise mechanical tinkering.
    • Luminous Inscriptions: Any line carved into stone, wood, or bone using the meteoric steel burin leaves a lingering microscopic trace in the weave. To any being using True Sight or viewing through an active Sense Magic spell, the inscribed lines glow with a soft violet light that remains legible in pitch darkness for one full calendar year.
  • Active Spells and Arcane Operations:
    • Silent Etch of Animal Placation:
      • Magic Point Cost: 2 Magic Points.
      • Casting Time: 1 combat round (executed as an instantaneous strike of the burin across the dorsal horn plate).
      • Resolution: The investigator engages in an opposed POW roll against an aggressive beast, feral predator, or guard animal within 10 yards. On a Regular Success, the beast’s violent drive is halted for 1D6 combat rounds, causing it to lower its posture and refuse to attack unless harmed. On an Extreme Success, the target becomes docile for ten minutes and treats the investigator as a harmless presence.
    • Glyph of Terrestrial Warning:
      • Magic Point Cost: 2 Magic Points.
      • Casting Time: 1 action (scratching a rapid geometric rune into floor stone, masonry, ice, or wood).
      • Resolution: Emits a 15-yard sonar-like arcane wave through solid surfaces. For the following ten minutes, the investigator instinctively senses the location of concealed pitfall traps, hollow structural voids, unstable ice shelves, and approaching subterranean entities through localized acoustic vibrations.
    • Rites of the Osteo-Shade:
      • Magic Point Cost: 5 Magic Points.
      • Sanity Cost: 1D3 Sanity points.
      • Casting Time: 10 minutes of uninterrupted throat-singing while actively carving a likeness into a fragment of bone or horn, requiring a successful Art/Craft (Singing, Carving, or Occult) roll.
      • Resolution: Bridges the veil to draw forth the shade of the creature from which the bone came, or a human ghost who perished at the site within the past century. The manifestation appears as a pale, translucent silhouette outlined in violet smoke and answers up to three specific questions regarding the local terrain, the presence of predators, or past historical occurrences in the area. A Fumble (96–100) summons a hostile, disoriented entity that attacks the investigator’s sanity.
  • System Drawbacks and Vulnerabilities:
    • Inescapable Acoustic Clatter: The suspended crane bones and bronze pellets produce a rhythmic chime during normal movement. The investigator suffers one Penalty Die on all Stealth rolls involving quiet traversal.
    • Catalytic Fragility: If an active spell roll results in a Fumble, the internal quartz catalyst fractures under energetic feedback. The investigator takes 1D3 points of damage to the right hand from physical shock, and the glove loses all magical properties until a qualified lapidary repairs the matrix.

Blades in the Dark

The Scrimshander’s Whisper-Burin

  • Item Classification and Equipment Logistics:
    • Item Profile: Fine Arcane Implement / Artisan’s Rig (Hand/Wrist).
    • Load Cost: 1 Load (Equipped on the dominant hand; difficult to conceal under tight gloves due to the protruding burin and horn mount).
    • Quality Rating: Tier I Fine Item (Operates at Tier II Quality when assessing Potency against ghosts, electroplasmic conduits, bone charms, and spirit well phenomena).
  • Protective Armor and Structural Fortification:
    • Hand-Deflection Armor: The scoundrel may mark standard Armor on their character sheet to completely absorb or negate physical harm targeting their hands, wrists, or forearms (such as parrying a razor slash, deflecting a hound’s bite, or catching a falling masonry fragment).
  • Mechanical Rules and Action Modifiers:
    • Tactile Psychometry: The scoundrel gains +1 Effect on Study or Tinker actions when physically handling unworked bone, fossil ivory, masonry, or raw structural timber. The tool reveals the material’s structural stress points, physical age, and any lingering traumatic impressions left by past deaths.
    • Scribe the Warded Glyph:
      • Stress Cost: 1 Stress.
      • Resolution: The scoundrel uses the meteoric steel burin to score a rapid rune into a doorway, floorboard, or cobblestone. When taking a Survey action to scan for structural traps, hidden maintenance crawlspaces, or approaching sentries, the action roll gains +1d and the position is improved by one step (e.g., from Risky to Controlled).
    • Pacify the Feral Beast:
      • Stress Cost: 1 Stress.
      • Resolution: The scoundrel strikes the burin along the reindeer-horn cuff with a silent, measured gesture while locking eyes with a guard hound, monstrous sewer-crawler, or feral spirit beast. When making a Sway or Consort roll to calm or bypass the creature, the position is treated as Controlled, and a success leaves the entity passive and indifferent for several minutes.
    • Seance of the Carved Shade:
      • Stress Cost: 2 Stress.
      • Resolution: During a score or within downtime, the scoundrel engages in sustained throat-singing while carving a facial likeness into a piece of animal bone, leviathan ivory, or old mortar. The scoundrel makes an Attune action with +1 Effect to pull the lingering ghost or memory-echo of a dead laborer, quarryman, or victim tied to the material into visible manifestation. The shade answers questions or provides crucial navigational blueprints before dissolving back into the ghost field.
  • Inherent Complications and Operating Hazards:
    • Acoustic Revealing: The bronze pellets and bone chimes rattle softly with every manual gesture. The scoundrel takes -1d to Prowl rolls when absolute silence is required, unless they take a preparation action to tape down the chimes (which deactivates the item’s defensive parry and magical active features while muffled).
    • Electroplasmic Conduction: When inside an active ghost field, whisper-haunt, or near a ruptured lightning barrier, the violet crystal flares brightly, increasing the Danger Clock for spirit detection by 1 tick upon every active use.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)

Glove of the Ancestral Engraver

  • Item Header and Properties:
    • Item Type: Wondrous Item, hand slot.
    • Rarity: Uncommon.
    • Attunement Requirement: Requires attunement by a bard, cleric, druid, ranger, or rogue, or by any character proficient with woodcarver’s tools, leatherworker’s tools, or jeweler’s tools.
    • Defensive Value: While wearing this glove and not wielding a shield, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class against melee weapon attacks, as the walrus tusk bolster and meteoric burin parry incoming strikes.
    • Off-Hand Weapon Utility: The meteoric burin functions as a simple melee weapon with the Finesse and Light properties, dealing 1d4 piercing damage on a hit.
  • Resource Pool and Fuel Economy:
    • Charges: The glove has 3 charges. It regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn as the embedded crystal absorbs ambient magical currents.
    • Fragility Threshold: When you expend the last charge from the glove, roll a d20. On a roll of 1, the internal violet crystal shatters into non-magical mineral dust; the glove permanently loses all active properties and the +1 AC bonus, retaining only its utility as an ordinary caribou leather glove and mundane cutting burin until an artisan replaces the stone.
  • Inherent Passive Benefits:
    • Resonance of the Grain: You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Nature or History) checks made to evaluate the origin, age, and physical properties of bone, wood, stone, and ivory. You also gain advantage on ability checks using artisan’s tools to carve or engrave these materials.
    • Steady Metronome: The rhythmic clatter of the wrist chimes steadies your concentration. You have advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration on spells resulting from taking damage, provided the damage was not psychic.
    • Luminous Glyphic Trace: Any rune, text, or figure you carve with the burin absorbs ambient weave energy. When viewed by a creature with Darkvision, Truesight, or an active detect magic spell, the carved grooves glow with a faint violet light shedding dim light in a 5-foot radius for up to 1 year.
  • Active Magical Abilities:
    • Silent Pacification (1 Charge):
      • Action Economy: 1 Action.
      • Operational Method: You scratch the burin silently across the reindeer-horn wrist plate, targeting a beast or monstrosity with an Intelligence of 4 or lower that you can see within 30 feet.
      • Resolution: The target must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the creature is affected as if by the calm emotions spell for 1 minute (no concentration required). It becomes indifferent toward you and your companions, ending hostile stances unless it takes damage.
    • Scribe Hazard Glyph (1 Charge):
      • Action Economy: 1 Action.
      • Operational Method: You carve a single glowing sigil into the ground or a wall.
      • Resolution: For the next 10 minutes, you emit an imperceptible pulse through solid surfaces out to a range of 30 feet. You immediately detect the presence and location of non-magical pit traps, concealed sinkholes, fragile ice, and structural masonry weaknesses within the area.
    • Ancestral Osteo-Shade (2 Charges):
      • Action Economy: 10-Minute Ritual.
      • Operational Method: You perform ceremonial throat-singing while carving a facial outline into a fragment of bone, antler, or stone.
      • Resolution: You cast speak with dead (spell save DC 13) without expending spell slots or requiring verbal spell components. The spell targets the lingering soul of the creature that bore the bone, or an intelligent creature that died within 100 feet of the site within the past year. A translucent shade rises from the carving to answer up to three questions.
  • Drawbacks and Complications:
    • Acoustic Footprint: The free-hanging bone tubes and bronze pellets chime with every rapid hand or arm motion. You have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to move quietly, unless you spend 1 minute lashing down the chimes with cordage (which suspends the glove’s AC bonus and all active abilities while bound).

Knave (2nd Edition)

Tarkhun’s Carving Gauntlet

  • Item Classification and Gear Logistics:
    • Item Category: Worn Relic / Artisan’s Tool (Hand Slot).
    • Inventory Slots: Occupies 1 Item Slot.
    • Armor Defense: Provides +1 Armor Defense to the wearer’s total Armor value when calculating defense ratings, as the walrus tusk bolster and meteoric burin assist in parrying melee weapon strikes.
    • Durability and Quality: Possesses 3 Quality points. If the wearer suffers a critical hit or direct sunder maneuver, they may sacrifice 1 Quality point from the gauntlet to absorb 5 points of incoming damage. At 0 Quality, the burin snaps and the horn disc splits, rendering the item non-functional until repaired by a tool-smith during downtime.
    • Weapon Value: Can be used to attack as an off-hand dagger dealing d4 damage (1 Hand).
  • Inherent Passive Benefits:
    • Tactile Insight: The wearer automatically passes any Wisdom or Intelligence check made to determine the physical age, structural soundness, and stress points of stone, timber, bone, and ice. The referee provides truthful descriptions of material faults without requiring a roll.
    • Steady Hands: The wearer has advantage on all Dexterity checks made to disarm mechanical traps, pick physical tumbler locks, execute delicate surgery, or perform high-precision scrimshaw carving.
  • Relic Powers and Daily Exploits:
    • Beast Soother (1/Day):
      • Action Economy: 1 Combat Round.
      • Operational Method: The wearer drags the burin across the reindeer-horn wrist disc, sending an invisible thought-wave toward a single wild animal or mundane predator within near range (40 feet).
      • Resolution: The target must make a Wisdom save. On a failed save, the creature loses all aggressive intent and becomes completely passive for 1 exploration turn (10 minutes), standing in place or quietly wandering away. Hostility returns if the beast or its brood is harmed.
    • Terrestrial Ping (1/Day):
      • Action Economy: 1 Action.
      • Operational Method: The wearer scratches a geometric rune into the floor or ground.
      • Resolution: A pulse travels through the stone or earth, instantly revealing all concealed pitfall traps, hollow subterranean voids, and sliding secret stone panels within 40 feet.
    • Ancestral Seance (1/Day):
      • Action Economy: 1 Exploration Turn (10 minutes).
      • Operational Method: The wearer sings in a guttural two-tone register while carving an ancestral face into a fragment of bone or horn found in the wilderness.
      • Resolution: A translucent spirit rises from the bone. The referee must answer two direct questions regarding the surrounding wilderness, dungeon level, or regional predators truthfully, based on what the spirit knew in life.
  • Inherent Complication:
    • Auditory Clatter: The three crane bones and bronze pellets click together with every stride. Any attempt to sneak or move silently while wearing the unrestrained gauntlet automatically fails or suffers disadvantage at the referee’s discretion. Tying down the chimes with cloth silences the noise, but suspends the +1 Armor Defense bonus and all daily exploits until untied.

Fate Core and Fate Condensed

    • Invoking the Aspect: A character may spend a Fate Point (or invoke a free invoke) to gain a +2 bonus or a reroll when using Crafts to carve or repair organic relics, using Notice to read structural grain flaws in stone or ice, parrying melee weapon strikes with the reinforced bolster, or communicating peacefully with ancestral spirits and territorial beasts.
    • Compelling the Aspect: The gamemaster may award a Fate Point to compel this aspect when the constant, rhythmic ringing of the bronze pellets and bone chimes alerts nearby sentries or prowling monsters, when the bright violet luminescence of carved glyphs betrays a hidden position, or when an aggressive spirit is drawn to the open conduit.
  • Inherent Stunts and Weaponry:
    • Weapon and Armor Rating:
      • The hardened meteoric steel burin can be used in physical combat as an agile punching implement, possessing Weapon:1.
      • When the gloved hand is kept empty to parry incoming melee strikes, the walrus tusk bolster and horn cuff grant Armor:1 against close-quarters physical attacks.
    • Tactile Memory of the Inscribed Grain:
      • The wearer gains a +2 bonus to Notice or Lore when resting the bare fingers upon unworked bone, fossil ivory, masonry, or ancient timber to discern its origin, age, structural stress fractures, or historical trauma.
    • Tremorless Metronome of the Wrist:
      • The acoustic feedback loop steadies the user’s manual coordination. The character gains a +2 bonus to Crafts or Burglary when attempting delicate manual precision tasks, such as high-precision engraving, delicate mechanical trap manipulation, lockpicking, or field surgical suturing.
    • Silent Etch of Animal Placation:
      • Once per scene, the character may spend a Fate Point and execute a wordless downward scratch across the dorsal horn plate. The player rolls Rapport or Empathy against the Will or Physique of an aggressive beast, guard creature, or natural predator in the same zone. On a success, the character creates the situation aspect Pacified by the Rhythmic Mark on the target with one free invoke (or two free invokes on a style), causing the beast to cease hostility and refuse to attack unless harmed.
    • Scribing of the Terrestrial Hazard Glyph:
      • Once per scene, the character may use an action to carve a warded rune into stone, floorboards, or ice. The player rolls Crafts or Notice with a +2 bonus to create an advantage representing mapped environmental stability. • Rites of the Carved Osteo-Shade:
      • By spending several minutes of uninterrupted downtime to perform throat-singing while carving a facial outline into bone or horn, the wearer may reach across the veil. The character spends a Fate Point and rolls Lore or Crafts to summon the lingering memory-shade of the creature or an ancient person who died in the area. On a success, the apparition answers up to three specific questions regarding localized geography, predatory trails, or hidden structures.
  • System Drawback and Flaws:
    • Auditory Footprint: The free-hanging bronze pellets and crane-bone cylinders chime with every manual movement. Any Overcome or Create an Advantage action using Stealth to move silently suffers a -2 penalty unless the character takes an action to tie down the chimes with cordage (which suspends all protective parry benefits and active abilities while muffled).

Numenera & Cypher System

Meteoric Resonator-Graver

  • Artifact Classification and Physical Metrics:
    • Level: 3 (rolled as 1d6 or established at Level 3 for standard campaign balance).
    • Form Factor: A tailored biological caribou-skin glove encasing the thumb, index, and middle fingers, outfitted with a meteoric steel burin set in a fossil walrus-ivory bolster, a dorsal horn plate housing a violet synth-crystal battery, and dangling acoustic tubes of avian bone and beaten bronze beads.
    • Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (check the depletion die only when triggering an active ability).
  • Inherent Passive Adjustments:
    • Defensive Parrying Guard: When the user’s hand is free of other equipment, the tusk bolster and hardened horn plate provide +1 to Armor against physical melee attacks directed at the user.
    • Integrated Light Weapon: The sixty-degree meteoric steel burin functions as a light melee weapon (inflicting 2 points of damage) with an asset on attack rolls due to its razor balance.
    • Psychometric Structural Insight: The wearer gains an asset (reducing task difficulty by one step) on all Intellect rolls made to evaluate the structural integrity, age, composition, and stress points of solid materials such as stone, timber, bone, and ancient ceramic relics.
    • Manual Calibration: The steady vibrational cadence of the wrist chimes grants an asset on Speed tasks involving high manual precision, such as picking mechanical locks, manipulating delicate cypher nodes, or performing field first aid.
    • Persistent Luminescence: Any glyph carved into matter with the burin absorbs ambient datasphere energy, glowing with a faint violet light legible in total darkness for up to one year to any entity with visual enhancements or energy-sensing organs.
  • Active Device Functions:
    • Silent Placation Wave:
      • Action: One action.
      • Effect: The user draws the burin across the horn mounting in a silent downward stroke, releasing a focused dampening wave at a biological beast or predatory critter of Level 3 or lower within short range (50 feet). The target loses all aggressive intent and becomes docile for ten minutes, refusing to initiate combat unless attacked.
      • Higher-Level Targets: To affect a creature of Level 4 or higher, the user must apply Effort from their Intellect Pool; each applied level of Effort raises the maximum target level by 1. Roll for Depletion upon each activation.
    • Terrestrial Hazard Ping:
      • Action: One action.
      • Effect: The user scores a single glowing spiral into floor stone, soil, or ice. The artifact discharges a low-frequency ground-sonar wave out to short range. For ten minutes, the user automatically detects the location of concealed physical pit traps, hollow subterranean voids, brittle structural masonry, and approaching subterranean burrowers. Roll for Depletion upon activation.
    • Osteo-Shade Datasphere Extraction:
      • Action: Ten minutes of sustained circular movement and throat-singing while engraving a bone fragment.
      • Effect: The device resonates with residual neural or datasphere imprints bound to the biological material. An apparition of the deceased entity materializes as a translucent violet projection, answering up to three concise inquiries regarding local topography, subterranean passages, or hostile creatures before fading. Roll for Depletion upon completion of the rite.
  • Complications and Cypher Intrusions:
    • Acoustic Revealing: The bone tubes and bronze beads clatter continuously with manual gestures. All tasks attempted to move silently or remain undetected have their difficulty increased by one step.
    • Potential GM Intrusion: A sudden resonant surge causes the violet crystal to overheat, delivering 2 points of ambient damage directly to the user’s hand and disabling the artifact’s active features for one hour.

    • Ancestral Osteo-Shade (Exploration Activity, 10 Minutes):
      • Traits: Auditory, Concentrate, Exploration, Primal.
      • Frequency: Once per day.
      • Effect: You perform continuous two-tone throat-singing while carving a facial outline into a piece of bone, antler, or stone. This functions as talking corpse, but rather than requiring an intact corpse, you can target an animal bone or an area of ground where an intelligent creature died within the past century. A translucent shade rises from the carving and answers up to three questions truthfully based on its knowledge in life.
  • System Drawbacks and Operating Penalties:
    • Inescapable Chime Noise: The suspended bronze pellets and crane-bone cylinders rattle with every manual gesture. You take a -2 item penalty to Stealth checks to Sneak unless you spend 1 minute tying down the chimes with cordage (which suspends the parrying AC bonus and all active abilities while bound).

      • Duration: 10 minutes of active ritual throat-singing and circular movement while carving a bone fragment.
      • Trapping: The user calls forth the shade of a departed person who died in the area or the spirit of the animal from which the bone was taken. A successful roll allows the spirit to impart clear, helpful advice regarding local landmarks, hidden tunnels, or predatory beast lairs.
  • Complications and System Drawbacks:
    • Constant Clatter: The three crane-bone cylinders and bronze pellets click and chime with every movement of the hand. The wearer suffers a -2 penalty to all Stealth rolls involving quiet movement unless the chimes are bound with cordage (which deactivates the device’s defensive parry and magical active features while bound).
    • Backlash Risk: Rolling a Critical Failure (a 1 on both the Arcane Skill die and the Wild Die) when activating a power causes the internal crystal to overheat, dealing 2d4 non-lethal damage directly to the user’s hand, inflicting the Stunned condition from psychic feedback, and disabling the device until a long rest is completed.

Shadowrun (Sixth World)

Talismanic Graver-Glove of the Awakened Artisan

  • Item Classification and Hardware Profile:
    • Item Category: Enchanted Telesma / Dedicated Qi Focus, Sustaining Focus, or Weapon Focus (Force Rating 2).
    • Form Factor: Three-fingered glove tailored from tallow-cured caribou hide encasing the thumb, index, and middle fingers, leaving the ring and little fingers bare for unshielded tactile contact. Mounted with a four-inch forge-welded meteoric steel and bog-iron burin seated in a fossilized walrus-tusk bolster along the index finger, a dorsal reindeer-horn plate housing an unprocessed alchemical orichalcum-quartz catalyst, and a wrist cuff suspending three crane-bone chimes and three cold-hammered bronze pellets.
    • Availability: 4 (R) (Monitored by Siberian and Yakut awakened syndicates as a restricted cultural relic).
    • Suggested Market Value: 16,000 to 22,000 Nuyen (black-market talismongers adjust pricing drastically based on regional background counts and local availability).
    • Karma Cost to Bind: 12 Karma (calculated as Focus Rating 2 multiplied by 6).
  • Passive System Modifiers and Tactical Profile:
    • Integrated Melee Profile: When used in close-quarters combat as a punch blade, the meteoric steel burin utilizes the Close Combat skill, dealing (STR + 1)P damage with an Attack Rating of 8 at Close range.
    • Defensive Parrying Rating: Adds +1 to the user’s Defense Rating (DR) against physical melee attacks when the gloved hand is kept free of secondary weapons, tools, or shields, representing the fossilized walrus tusk bolster and reinforced caribou leather catching and turning aside incoming blades.
    • Tactile Psychometry of Materials: Resting the bare ring or little finger upon unworked bone, ivory, raw timber, or masonry grants an intuitive sensory reading of the substance. The user gains a +1 dice pool bonus on Outdoors, Engineering, or Biotech tests made to assess structural fault lines, determine physical age, or identify material composition.
    • Tremorless Motor Coordination: The continuous vibrational feedback loop generated by the bone chimes and bronze pellets eliminates physical hand tremors. The user receives a +1 dice pool bonus on manual precision tests, including Locksmith (physical tumblers), Biotech (field surgery and suturing), and delicate mechanical sabotage.
    • Astral Inscription Persistence: Any geometric rune or marker etched into physical surfaces using the meteoric burin absorbs ambient mana, leaving a luminous violet trace on the astral plane visible to Astral Perception for one full calendar year.
  • Active Magical Operations:
    • Silent Critter Calming:
      • Action Economy: Minor Action to prepare cadence, followed by a Major Action to execute a silent downward burin scratch across the dorsal horn disc.
      • Operational Method: Channels an inaudible psychic dampening pulse through the crystal catalyst toward a single aggressive animal, guard hound, or low-intellect awakened paracritter within 10 meters.
      • Resolution: The caster rolls Magic + Sorcery (or Animal Handling) opposed by the target’s Willpower + Intuition. On net hits, the beast loses all aggressive focus for a number of combat rounds equal to the net hits, adopting a docile posture and refusing to attack unless it or its immediate brood takes physical or stun damage.
    • Subterranean Hazard Ping:
      • Action Economy: Major Action.
      • Operational Method: The user scores a rapid spiral rune into floorboards, concrete, or stone, releasing an acoustic ground-sonar wave across a 15-meter radius.
      • Resolution: For 10 minutes, the user instinctively senses concealed pit traps, hollow architectural voids, structural floor weaknesses, and approaching subterranean burrowers through localized micro-vibrations transmitted into the wrist.
    • Rite of the Osteo-Shade:
      • Action Economy: Extended Ritual requiring 10 continuous minutes of uninterrupted throat-singing while carving a facial outline into a fragment of bone or horn.
      • Operational Method: The caster projects mana into the local astral background to draw forth the lingering psychic impression of the creature from which the bone originated or a person who died in the immediate vicinity.
      • Resolution: The caster rolls Conjuring + Magic against a threshold of 3. On a successful test, a translucent violet shade manifests astrally (whispering audibly to the caster), answering up to three direct questions concerning local topography, subterranean pathways, or the astral signatures of nearby entities.
  • Operational Hazards and System Drawbacks:
    • Inescapable Acoustic Profile: The crane-bone cylinders and bronze pellets chime audibly with manual movements. Any Stealth test attempted to move silently suffers an automatic -2 dice pool penalty unless the user expends an action to bind the chimes with heavy tape or cloth (which temporarily deactivates the focus’s defensive parrying bonus and all active powers).
    • Astral Visibility: When actively attuned, the focus projects an unmistakable pale-violet astral aura, making the wearer readily identifiable to spirits, astral watchers, and patrolling security magicians.
    • Focus Burnout: If the focus is subjected to a targeted physical or astral sunder attack that penetrates the user’s defenses, or if the user suffers drain equal to or exceeding their Essence, roll 1d6; on a result of 1, the quartz core fractures, disabling all magical capabilities until repaired by an artisan.

        • Success: The creature hesitates, becoming Stunned 1 as its predatory focus wavers.
        • Failure: The creature becomes indifferent to you and your allies for 1 minute, ceasing all hostile attacks unless it or its brood takes damage.
        • Critical Failure: As failure, but the duration extends to 10 minutes, and the creature regards you as an unthreatening neutral entity.
    • Hazard Acoustic Ping (Two Actions):
      • Traits: Concentrate, Manipulate, Sensory.
      • Frequency: Twice per day.
      • Effect: Scribing a spiral into stone, metal decking, or ice sends an acoustic ground-sonar wave out in a 30-foot emanation. • Traits: Auditory, Concentrate, Exploration, Primal.
      • Frequency: Once per day.
      • Effect: You engage in uninterrupted throat-singing while carving a facial outline into a piece of animal bone, fossil, or structural material. A shimmering translucent manifestation of a creature or colonist who died within 1 mile materializes for 5 minutes, answering up to three questions concerning local topography, natural hazards, or planetary predators.
  • Environmental and System Drawbacks:
    • Audible Chime Noise: The bone tubes and bronze pellets rattle continuously with rapid movement. You take a -2 item penalty to Stealth checks to Sneak unless you spend 1 minute lashing down the chimes with cordage (which suspends the parrying AC bonus and all active abilities while bound).
    • Kinetic Stress Fragility: If the user suffers a critical hit from an explosive or bludgeoning attack, they must roll a DC 15 flat check. On a failure, the interior crystal battery fractures, causing the glove to gain the Broken condition until repaired during downtime using the Crafting skill.

Mongoose Traveller (Second Edition)

      • Operational Effect: The crystal core interfaces with residual cognitive fields left in the environment by an organism that died in the vicinity. The user makes an Average (8+) Clairvoyance or Telepathy check. Success allows the character to experience an audiovisual memory-echo from the deceased entity, obtaining critical navigational clues, hazards to avoid, or the location of hidden subterranean installations.
  • System Complications and Physical Drawbacks:
    • Inescapable Acoustic Signature: The free-hanging bone chimes and bronze pellets clatter with manual gestures. The wearer suffers an automatic DM-2 penalty to all Stealth checks involving silent movement.
    • Sensor Traceability: The ambient psi-resonance emitted by the internal crystal can be detected by specialized Imperial sensor drones and psionic detection arrays at up to triple the normal detection range.

      • Resolution: The character makes a Channelling (Ghur or Spirit) test against an Average (+20) difficulty. On a success, a translucent spirit emerges from the mist, answering up to three questions truthfully concerning regional landmarks, territorial beast dens, or recent skirmishes that occurred in the vicinity.
  • System Drawbacks and Inherent Weaknesses:
    • Acoustic Revealing: The crane-bone cylinders and bronze pellets cannot be completely silenced while the glove is worn loose. The character suffers a -20% penalty to all Stealth (Rural or Urban) tests made to move silently unless the chimes are bound with cordage (which suspends the parrying defense and all active magical abilities while bound).
    • Attunement Disruption: If the gauntlet suffers 3 points of damage from a single critical strike targeting the hand, the horn plate cracks and the quartz catalyst discharges violently, inflicting 1 Wound directly to the user (ignoring Toughness) and rendering all magical qualities non-functional until repaired by an artisan.
