Lore:
- Originating in the secluded volcanic crags of Saṃsāra during the early ages of settlement, this item was developed by yamabushi healers who observed the profound effects of extreme ascetic trials on the physical vessel.
- The practitioners realized that prolonged fasting, freezing waterfall meditations, and walking across glowing coals altered the internal vital humors, humectants, and glandular secretions of the mortal body.
- Drawing upon past-life memories of biological systems from across the multiverse, an ascetic artisan bound sacred mountain herbs and crystalline minerals into wooden prayer beads, tuning them to interact directly with the bodily glands.
- The beads were designed to govern the avatar’s internal chemical balance, moderating the sudden release of biological adrenaline, metabolic warmth, and exhaustion-inducing hormones during harsh wilderness expeditions.
- The numerical designation 519 was etched into the central guru bead by the mountain monastery’s elder carvers, marking the sequence of trials required to align one’s hormonal balance with the natural rhythms of the world-moon.
Description:
- A circular strand of twenty-one dark, aromatic beads hand-carved from the heartwood of aged mountain camphor trees, strung upon a braided sinew cord.
- The central, larger guru bead is hollowed and fitted with a perforated silver cap, housing a microscopic tincture well filled with crystallized herbal bile and mineral salts.
- Flanking the central bead are two pairs of polished carnelian and pale jade stones representing the twin polarities of glandular stimulation and calm secretion.
- Faint, serpentine channels are carved into the surface of each wooden bead, inlaid with powdered zinc and cinnabar that warm against the skin when the avatar’s pulse accelerates.
- The rosary emits a faint, medicinal fragrance reminiscent of crushed ginger, dried licorice root, and camphor, growing noticeably more pungent whenever internal biological shifts occur.
Detailed Stats:

- Item Health Points: Maximum Avatar Health Points plus 10 (Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
- Resilience: 10
- Weight: 0.5 pounds
- Bound Status: Unbound
- Required Attunement: Simple attunement (1 minute of focused, measured breathing while pressing the central guru bead against the radial artery of the wrist)
- Component Requirements: Requires no consumed fuel for basic functions, but absorbing a drop of herbal extract or bitter sap once per season maintains the aromatic potency of the beads
Passive Magics:
- Metabolic Regulation: While worn and attuned, the beads constantly monitor and stabilize the avatar’s thyroid and metabolic flow. The avatar reduces water and food consumption penalties by half when traversing freezing calderas or scorching lowlands, and gains a +2 bonus to saving throws against suffering the Fatigued or Debilitated conditions caused by non-magical physical exhaustion.
- Glandular Homeostasis: The subtle medicinal resonance dampens severe hormonal spikes from sudden fright or panic. The avatar gains advantage on saving throws to resist obtaining the Frightened, Shaken, or Insane conditions caused by sudden external shocks or mental intimidations.
- Circadian Equilibrium: The avatar’s internal melatonin and waking hormones align perfectly with the 22-hour diurnal cycle of Saṃsāra, allowing the avatar to fully wake from rest instantly without suffering disorientation or sleep-inertia penalties.
Activable Magics:
- Adrenal Surge: As a free action taken at the beginning of the avatar’s turn, the user squeezes the carnelian bead against the pulse point of the wrist, commanding the adrenal glands to flood the body with emergency vigor. For 1 minute, the avatar gains a +10 foot bonus to movement speed and a +2 bonus to physical ability checks and saving throws. When the effect ends, a temporary hormonal crash sets in, inflicting a -1 penalty to all physical checks for 10 minutes unless the avatar consumes a meal or rests. This ability can be used once per long rest.
- Calcitonin Flush: As an action, the avatar rubs the two pale jade counter-beads together while chanting a mantra of physical consolidation, stimulating glandular bone preservation and cellular resilience. The avatar immediately gains 1d4 + 1 temporary Hit Points (subject to the standard character temporary HP cap) and gains advantage on saving throws against being knocked Prone or suffering Matrix or Physical Damage for 1 hour. This ability can be used twice per long rest.
- Endocrine Purge: As a reaction when the avatar is subjected to a biological toxin, venom, or food-borne irritant, the user twists the central silver-capped guru bead to induce a rapid flush of hepatic and lymphatic secretions. The avatar immediately rolls a saving throw against the poison or disease with advantage, adding their Tier Die to the result to violently neutralize the chemical agent before it circulates through the bloodstream. This can be used once per combat encounter or hazard scene.

Commerce and Acquisition of Ascetic Endocrine Beads in Saṃsāra
- Apothecary Dispensaries and Herbalist Guild Halls:
- Located along the busy medical alleys of major island capitols and central trading settlements, these formal clinical shops feature floor-to-ceiling rows of dried botanical drawers, glass distillation coils, and balancing scales.
- Master apothecaries examine the rosary’s camphor wood and cinnabar channels with magnifying loupes, marketing the beads to traveling scholars, physicians, and field surgeons who require constant metabolic stability and toxin protection during prolonged surgeries or pestilence investigations.
- An unaffiliated traveler purchasing a set of these beads pays a retail price between 90 silver and 120 silver, while recognized members of an alchemist guild, hospital ward, or physician college receive the standard 10% guild discount, bringing the acquisition price to 81 silver to 108 silver.
- Selling the prayer beads to an apothecary yields between 65 silver and 85 silver deposited into the seller’s World Bank ledger, assuming the central guru bead’s inner tincture chamber is clear of contamination and the wood remains aromatic.
- Mountain Hermitage Shrines and Ascetic Monasteries:
- Perched along jagged cliff trails near high-altitude meditation falls or beside geothermal steam fissures, these austere stone retreats are managed by initiated yamabushi monks and elder wilderness guides.
- In these tranquil prayer halls, the beads are displayed on woven cedar mats beside bronze incense bowls, offered not as luxury commodities, but as vital ascetic instruments designed to help pilgrims endure harsh mountain fasting and freezing thin-air passages.
- Transactions here follow monastic customs of mutual aid and suggested donations; unaffiliated travelers typically pay roughly 8 gold to 10 gold (equivalent to 80 silver to 100 silver), while certified yamabushi acolytes, wandering ascetics, or pilgrims bearing sacred monastery seals acquire them for 7.2 gold to 9 gold.
- Monks rarely maintain significant reserves of metal coinage, meaning sales to a hermitage usually yield compensation in the form of travel supplies, such as purified mountain tree sap, dried medicinal rations, climbing crampons, or a modest World Bank credit transfer of 55 silver to 70 silver.
- Frontier Scout Outfitters and Expedition Warehouses:
- Situated within rough palisade border forts, logging settlements, and forward scouting garrisons near untamed island wilds, these utilitarian mercantile posts supply rough survival gear, heavy packs, and wilderness rations.
- Frontier quartermasters promote the endocrine beads to pathfinders, trackers, and monster-hunting avatars, emphasizing the practical survival value of the rapid adrenal surge and the internal toxin flush when traversing venom-infested jungles or hostile volcanic swamps.
- Because these outposts operate under challenging logistics with high markups on imported medical and spiritual goods, the baseline purchase cost ranges from 110 silver to 145 silver, with a 10% markdown granted to contracted garrison scouts or licensed frontier guides.
- When offloading an extra set of beads to an expedition outfitter, the quartermaster typically offers between 70 silver and 90 silver, either recorded through local settlement chits or transferred directly into the seller’s institutional account.
- Portside Smuggler Dens and Black-Market Arcana Stalls:
- Tucked into damp, low-tide alleys beneath coastal wharf piers or operating out of hidden backrooms in dockside taverns, these clandestine brokers trade in reclaimed adventurer goods, unregistered monster fluids, and salvage.
- Fence merchants sell these beads to corsairs, multi-timer escapees, and underground gladiators looking to exploit the natural biological stimulant of the carnelian bead to win illegal pit fights or outrun town watch squads without relying on detectable magical potions.
- Prices at these shadow stalls fluctuate based on local law enforcement crackdowns and port supply; an avatar might find a scuffed set for as low as 70 silver during a port glut, or pay up to 130 silver if authorities are heavily policing imported alchemical supplies.
- Fences liquidate beads quickly, offering sellers between 45 silver and 60 silver in non-metal trade tokens, unrefined crystal shards, or raw physical silver coin, refusing official bank transfers to avoid leaving an audit trail with the World Bank.
Physiological and Tactical Applications of the Endocrine Beads Across Saṃsāra
- Volcanic Calderas and Geothermal Fissure Ridges:
- Defensive Roleplay:
- When crossing superheated scree fields bathed in sulfur fumes and radiant ground heat, the avatar rotates the camphor beads along their wrist to regulate thyroid signaling and skin capillary dilation.
- The beads stimulate a steady, controlled sweat response that resists dehydration and heatstroke, allowing the user to maintain full physical endurance while companions in heavy mail stagger from thermal exhaustion.
- In the event that a sulfur gas vent erupts directly underfoot, the avatar quickly twists the silver guru bead to invoke the Endocrine Purge, inducing an immediate lymphatic and bronchial flush that expels caustic inhaled toxins before the lungs suffer blistering damage.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- During close-quarters skirmishes against fire-breathing lizards or armored obsidian crabs along narrow lava shelves, the avatar crushes the carnelian bead against their radial artery to trigger an intentional Adrenal Surge.
- With epinephrine flooding their cardiovascular system, the avatar charges aggressively across unstable magma rocks with burst-speed reflexes, leaping over expanding magma cracks to deliver precision thrusts into the weak chitin joints of beasts before the creatures can bring their pincers to bear.
- The avatar leverages this surge to maintain hyper-acute perceptual focus, reading muscle twitches in hostile beasts to preemptively sidestep sweeping tails and knock targets directly into sulfur pits.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Glacial Ridges and Frozen High-Altitude Scree:
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Traversing wind-swept, sub-zero passes where hypothermia normally sets in within minutes, the avatar relies on the rosary’s metabolic modulation to elevate their basal metabolic rate.
- Brown adipose tissue activation is stimulated through the cinnabar channels, warming the blood circulating to the fingers and toes to prevent frostbite and numbness without needing bulky fur gauntlets that hinder spellcasting or weapon handling.
- When crossing collapsing snow bridges, the avatar rubs the jade counter-beads for the Calcitonin Flush, fortifying bone density and muscular tension so that sudden drops or heavy impacts onto hidden ice shelves fail to shatter shins or dislodge footing.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When pursuing elusive frost-furred predators or ambushing mountain brigands who rely on the bitter cold to slow outsiders, the avatar activates an adrenal flood.
- Shaking off the sluggish, shivering instincts common in sub-zero environments, the user sprints effortlessly through knee-deep drifts, closing the distance on fleeing scouts and striking before the enemies can loose their recurve bows.
- The avatar roleplays cold-blooded predatory efficiency, utilizing elevated blood pressure and dilated pupils to track the pale thermal footprints of camouflaged beasts against the blank glare of the ice sheets.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Stagnant Mire Marshes and Poison-Fog Lowlands:

- Marching through waist-deep, brackish water swarming with necrotic leeches, poisonous water-vipers, and airborne spore-clouds, the avatar keeps the beads pressed tightly against their inner forearm.
- The constant glandular stabilization keeps cortisol levels in check, preventing panic from clouding tactical judgment when foul swamp waters breach boots or clothing.
- Should an amphibious stalker inject venom through a sudden puncture wound, the avatar activates the Endocrine Purge as an instantaneous reaction; the lymphatic surge violently neutralizes the necrotic proteins in the bloodstream, turning what should have been fatal gangrenous rot into a minor localized welt.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When tracking hostile swamp-dwelling tribes or bog hags through thick, suffocating reeds, the avatar utilizes the heightened metabolic readiness to wade relentlessly through viscous mud without succumbing to fatigue.
- Triggering the Adrenal Surge just before bursting into an enemy encampment, the avatar outpaces the sluggish swamp defenders, vaulting over sunken defensive stakes and striking down spear-wielding skirmishers before they can organize a shield wall.
- The avatar presses the attack with ferocious physical intensity, knowing their fortified physiology will burn through lingering fatigue poisons and environmental dampness that would cripple a mundane warrior.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Subterranean Cavern Depths and Oxygen-Deprived Chasms:
- Defensive Roleplay:
- In pitch-black subterranean labyrinths where stale air and high carbon-dioxide pockets induce hypoxia and sluggishness, the avatar’s circadian and thyroid hormones remain artificially locked in equilibrium.
- The beads continuously balance the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity, staving off altitude sickness, dizzy spells, and the creeping dread of claustrophobia that frequently causes underground miners and delvers to hyperventilate.
- When cave-ins or shifting boulders strike the party, the avatar activates the Calcitonin Flush, drawing upon augmented skeletal strength to catch falling ceiling slabs or brace against crushing debris without suffering fractured collarbones or collapsed ribs.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Confronting blind subterranean stalkers that hunt by sensing vibrations and elevated heart rates, the avatar uses the rosary to deliberately slow their resting pulse, dropping their bio-signature to blend into the surrounding stone.
- Once positioned directly behind an unsuspecting target, the avatar activates the Adrenal Surge with a snap of the carnelian bead, bursting from absolute stillness into violent, maximum-effort execution strikes.
- The explosive physical strike overwhelms the subterranean beast’s echolocation before it can orient toward the sudden shift from near-dead stillness to blinding athletic velocity.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- High-Altitude Rotor Barges and Cloud-Spire Walkways:
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Working aboard open zeppelin decks, rope gangways, and exterior scaffoldings exposed to fierce atmospheric shear, sudden vertigo is a lethal hazard.
- The rosary dampens acute vestibular panic and inner-ear vertigo, preventing the dizzying drop in blood pressure that causes travelers to freeze or fall when peering over sheer drop-offs thousands of feet above the sea.
- If hit by unexpected turbulence or concussive blasts from anti-air ballistas, the avatar rolls the jade counter-beads to lock their joints and balance, completely ignoring the Prone condition to remain securely planted on the pitching deck.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When repelling boarding parties of sky-corsairs swinging across tether lines, the avatar utilizes the Adrenal Surge to sprint across narrow rigging lines and swaying cables with superhuman balance and speed.
- Reaching the enemy boarding platform before the corsairs can untie their grapnels, the avatar delivers high-velocity shield shoves and sweeping leg strikes, exploiting their enhanced muscular acceleration to launch attackers over the railings into the open sky.
- The avatar operates with relentless, methodical clarity, dictating the tempo of high-stakes vertical combat while enemies struggle with the thin air and plummeting temperatures.

Crafting Steps:
- Turning and hollowing the prayer beads:
- Mount the cured mountain camphor heartwood onto the lathe and turn twenty-one uniform, round beads.
- Drill a clean cord channel through nineteen of the outer beads, smoothing the interior bores with fine abrasive cord to prevent wear on the stringing line.
- Take the remaining two larger beads and hollow one out from the top to create the primary guru bead’s internal reservoir; hollow the second as a retaining base.
- Carve shallow, winding serpentine capillary channels across the outer circumference of all twenty-one beads using diamond gravers.
- Compounding and applying the mineral inlay:
- Grind the cinnabar and zinc mineral stones in the agate mortar until reduced to a talc-fine powder.
- Take one coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal, crush it to powder, and blend it into the mineral mixture to act as an energetic conduit.
- Mix the powders with refined tree sap to create a thick, lustrous red paste.
- Press the cinnabar-zinc paste firmly into the engraved serpentine channels across every wooden bead, wiping away surface residue with a damp linen cloth before setting the beads to cure in a dry, ventilated room for 8 hours.
- Fabricating the silver guru bead fixtures:
- Hammer and draw the sterling silver ingot into a thin, dome-shaped cap drilled with seven microscopic breathing apertures.
- Forge a miniature friction valve seated inside the cap to allow biological vapor exchange without leaking liquid contents.
- Engrave the maker’s seal and the numerical mark “519” around the lower silver collar using a hardened steel graver.
- Fit the silver cap over the hollow reservoir of the guru bead, seating it flush against the carved camphor shoulder with a thin bead of refined tree sap.
- Charging the internal reservoir:
- Draw the concentrated herbal bile and licorice extract into the fluid collector.
- Carefully inject the measured fluid through the central port of the silver cap into the guru bead’s inner reservoir.
- Verify that the valve seals properly and that moisture only vents as micro-fine aromatic vapor when warmth and pressure are applied to the bead.
- Stringing and balancing the assembly:
- Thread the braided sinew cord through the nineteen camphor beads.
- Flank the central guru bead symmetrically: place one carnelian bead and one pale jade bead on each immediate side of the center.
- Pull the sinew cord taut, tying off the assembly beneath the guru bead with an interlocking square knot to ensure the beads sit flush with minimal slack.
- Polish the entire strand with the leather strop and rottenstone until the wood feels silky against the skin.
- Magical transference and physiological attunement:
- Place the second, intact Tier 1 magic crystal into direct physical contact with the carnelian and guru beads over a warm brazier plate.
- The crafter places their fingers over the assembly, breathing in a steady, measured cadence for one full exploration turn (10 minutes) while visualizing the flow of internal humors and vital circulation.
- As spiritual harmony is reached, the intact crystal dissolves into radiant motes, permanently binding its metabolic resilience into the camphor wood, stones, and silver reservoir.
- Test the completed strand by warming the guru bead against the palm; confirm that the amber glow faintly illuminates the perforated silver cap and that the herbal aroma of camphor and ginger begins to vent.
Wrist-String of Inner Waters 519
In the time before the sky had twenty-two hours of counting, when the great woman who is the moon-world was still leaking black oil from her knees, the men who had dropped out of the stars were walking like blind grubs upon the red gravel. They had in their skins the great shivering. When the wind of the high mountain blew upon their bellies, their inner broth turned cold like ditch-water in the frost, and their legs became soft like boiled radishes. When the fire-mountain threw red dust into their mouths, their blood became hot like cooking-grease, and they ran into the briars shouting wild sounds because the inner humors of their livers were boiling without a lid.
There was in that season an ascetic man who had forgotten the name of his mother’s town across the big empty sky. He had only the skin of his chest, which was wrinkled like a dried pear, and two sandals made of willow-bark. He lived where the cold water falls over the black basalt cliff with a noise like five hundred shields falling upon stones. For three times sixty days he did not eat the yellow grain, nor did he put the fat of goats into his stew-pan. He sat beneath the falling water until the hair of his head fell out and his skin became yellow like old cheese.
This man, whose name in the clumsy scratches of the clay was called the Watcher of the Inner Pipings, looked with his two eyes into his own belly. In those ancient days, a man could see inside his meat if he did not chew food for one hundred moons. He saw that inside his neck and inside his flanks there were small bags of water, like the little bladders that a fisherman finds inside the belly of a catfish. When the wild horned tigers of the ravine leaped out of the fern-trees, these little bladders in his flanks became squeezed like a wet sheep-sponge, and a bitter juice rushed into his heart, making his heart hammer like a blacksmith beating a plow-point.
The Watcher of the Inner Pipings said to his own intestines: “Behold, when the juice of the flank-bladder runs into the blood, a man becomes strong like an ox, but his wits fly out of his ears like sparrows from a burning barn. He does not see the hole in the rock, and he falls upon his own dagger. And when the juice has run out of the blood, his legs turn to water, his teeth chatter with great coldness, and he lies in the mud like a calf that has been struck by an iron mallet. This is an ill thing, because the monsters of this world have no pity for a two-legged walker whose broth has run dry.”
Therefore, he took his iron gouge and climbed into the ancient forest of the camphor-trees, where the gray trees smell like medicine and the bark is thick like three cow-hides. He cut a thick bough that had been struck by the lightning that has no thunder. He did not burn the wood, but he sat upon a round boulder and turned the wood between his two knees using a bow-string, making twenty and one round balls like the eggs of a quail. In each ball he poked a hole with a heated bronze bodkin, and upon the skins of the wooden balls he made crooked lines like the little red worms that crawl beneath the skin when a man has the swamp-fever.
Then he went down into the crack where the earth was stinking with yellow brimstone. He found two round pebbles of orange fire-stone, which the merchants call carnelian, and two smooth pebbles of green river-grease, which are the jade stones that do not burn. He drilled them through their bellies and placed them beside the largest wooden ball, which he had made hollow like a little water-jar.
Inside the little wooden water-jar he poured the thick bitter bile of a two-headed mountain serpent that had died while sleeping in the snow, together with the boiled juice of the yellow root that tastes of wood-licorice. He sealed the mouth of the little jar with a thin skin of white silver that had seven tiny thorn-holes.
Now the scribes of old have set down that he had no thread of hemp that would hold such strong medicine, so he caught an old wild ram that had fallen from the crag and took the white sinew from its backbone. He braided the sinew while saying sixty-six times the names of the ancient gods who make the blood run smooth in the veins of children. He bound the string about his left wrist, pressing the silver-capped jar against the place where the red artery jumps like a frog beneath the skin.
It came to pass in that very moon that the Great Mountain-Crusher, which was a beast having six legs, four tusks of blue bone, and a hide covered in stony warts, came thundering down the scree to drink the water of the waterfall. The beast saw the old hermit sitting upon his stone. The beast did not like the smell of a man who does not eat meat, for its nostrils were filled with the desire to smell fresh grease and red blood. It lifted its six legs and ran with the noise of an avalanche, lowering its blue tusks to tear the hermit into four quarters.
The old hermit did not leap into the foam of the pool, nor did he hide his head beneath his willow basket. He reached with the thumb of his right hand and squeezed the orange carnelian bead hard against the silver cap of the wrist-string.
Lo, the ancient leather scroll says that a great wonder was done in the meat of the man. The tiny silver valve hissed like an adder in the grass. The bitter essence of the serpent-bile and the crushed camphor went through the skin and entered into the red river of his pulse. His eyes, which were watery and gray like dirty ditch-water, became bright like the yellow lamps that the miners carry into the coal-tunnels. The veins upon his forehead swelled up like the thick roots of a wild ivy-vine. His lungs opened wide like the bellows of a great furnace, and the blood in his arms became hot like the broth of a mutton-pot.
When the Great Mountain-Crusher swung its blue bone tusk to rip him open, the old man did not dodge like a frightened coney. He reached out his bare left hand and caught the blue tusk by its crooked root. The bone struck his palm with the weight of twelve carts of stone, yet his elbow did not fold and his collarbone did not snap, for the jade beads had commanded the lime in his skeleton to become hard like the foundation-rock of the island.
The beast snorted with great astonishment, for never before had a hairless two-legged thing held back its charge. The hermit spoke no word of boasting, for his breath was held tight within his throat. With his right fist, which was hardened by the cinnabar channels of the prayer-string, he struck the beast upon its soft wet snout. The blow sounded not like the slapping of meat, but like an iron beam falling upon an anvil. The great beast was thrown backward upon its six hams, its tusks were driven back into its jaw, and the yellow water of its eyes poured out upon the moss.
Then the beast, having great confusion in its thick skull, rose upon its six feet and turned its heavy tail toward the waterfall, running back up the stony crag with many whimpering groans, leaving behind three broken teeth and a stone of clear white crystal that was wet with its foaming saliva.
The hermit sat down upon his boulder. His heart was knocking against his ribs like a captive hare trying to break out of a wicker cage, and his mouth was dry like the sand of the seashore. Yet he did not fall down into the sleep of death, for the pale jade beads on the string began to drink the wild heat out of his blood, pouring cool milk-waters into his liver until his pulse became slow and regular, like the dripping of oil from a church-lamp.
He took the crystal that had dropped from the beast’s mouth and pressed it against the wrist-string. The white crystal dissolved into pale yellow sparks that went into the camphor wood, and the number five hundred and nineteen appeared upon the silver cap, which was the tally of the breaths a man must take between the rising of the red anger and the coming of the quiet mind.
In the seasons that came after, many great captains and kings of the war-islands sent their runners with bundles of purple silk and chests of copper rings, saying: “Give us the twenty-one balls of camphor that make the skin of an old dog hard like iron and give to the arm the force of an ox-team.”
The Watcher of the Inner Pipings only pointed with his stick to the cold waterfall, saying: “If an angry man wears this string upon his flesh, his own blood will cook his heart within his chest, and his eyes will burst from his head like roasted chestnuts. The beads are not for the man who wishes to break his neighbor’s cattle-pens, but for the pilgrim who must walk through the freezing fog with an empty stomach and keep his inner lamps burning until the morning star is born.”
He would give the string to no soldier who carried a sword of iron, but gave the craft only to the wanderers who knew how to sit beneath the cold fall without cursing the stones.
Moral of the Story: True strength is not the roaring fire of sudden fury that consumes its own wood and leaves only gray ashes in the wind, but the disciplined mastery of the inner fountains, which can summon the thunder in the hour of peril and return the soul to the stillness of deep waters when the danger has passed.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
Yamabushi Rosary of Glandular Mastery
- Description: A strand of twenty-one dark camphor beads strung on braided sinew, flanked by polished carnelian and pale jade stones. A central silver-capped guru bead holds a microscopic reservoir of dried bile and mineral salts, etched with the number 519. When worn against the wrist pulse, it regulates internal chemistry and hormonal secretion.
- Type: Arcane/Spiritual Artifact
- Weight: 0.5 lbs
- Cost: Invaluable; kept by ascetic mountain sects or preserved in esoteric anatomical collections.
- Sanity Loss: None to wear or attune. Witnessing the rapid bodily flush or internal purge causes 0/1 Sanity loss to sensitive observers.
Game Mechanics:
- Homeostatic Buffer (Passive): While worn and pressed against a pulse point, the beads stabilize internal body temperature and baseline vitals. The wearer gains a bonus die (+1D) on CON rolls to resist physical exhaustion, hypothermia, heatstroke, or altitude sickness.
- Shock Dampener (Passive): Sudden hormonal panics are smoothed out. The investigator gains a +5% bonus to starting Sanity resistance against sudden fright or intimidation (though not against Mythos-induced cosmic horror).
- Adrenal Surge (Active): The user pinches the carnelian bead against the wrist to stimulate a flood of epinephrine. For 1D6 combat rounds, the user receives +10% to all STR, DEX, and CON characteristic rolls, +10 feet to movement, and +1 to the Damage Bonus (DB). Once the effect expires, the investigator suffers an immediate hormonal crash, incurring one penalty die (-1D) on all physical characteristic rolls for 1 hour unless a meal and rest are taken.
- Endocrine Purge (Reaction): When exposed to an ingested, inhaled, or injected biological poison or venom, the user twists the silver cap on the central bead. The user spends 2 Magic Points to immediately re-roll a failed CON roll against the toxin with a bonus die (+1D). On a success, the body violently sweats and flushes the foreign agent out, neutralizing the lethal effect.
- Bone and Tissue Fortification (Active): Rubbing the jade beads together stimulates osteo-protective hormones. Spending 1 Magic Point grants 1 point of temporary armor protection against blunt trauma or falling damage for 1 hour.
